A place for Sally Hemings’ story PERSPECTIVE You cannot see Thomas Jefferson’s mansion, Monticello, from the small room burrowed into the ground along the south wing of his estate. When the door is closed, you can’t see anything at all, because it is a windowless room, with a low ceiling and damp walls. But this was, very likely, the room inhabited by Sally Hemings, the enslaved woman who bore six of Jefferson’s children, a woman about whom little is known — who lived her life as Jefferson’s property and was considered his concubine, and who was a source of scandal and a political liability. On Saturday, Monticello will open the room to the public, with a small exhibition devoted to the life of Hemings and the Hemings family. Reclaiming this space, which previously had been used as a public restroom, marks the completion of a five-year plan called the Mountaintop Project. Using archaeology and other evidence, Monticello curators

have restored Mulberry Row, where enslaved people lived and labored, and made changes inside the mansion, restoring the north and south wings and opening the upstairs rooms to the public on special tours. But symbolically and emotionally, the restoration of the Hemings room is the heart of the new interpretation of Monticello, and it makes tangible a relationship that has been controversial since rumors of “Dusky Sally” became part of

American political invective in the early 19th century. Monticello historians are relatively confident that Sally Hemings lived in one of two rooms along the south wing, based on an encounter between Jefferson’s grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph and an early biographer, and other evidence. So if the room now dubbed Hemings’ room isn’t the “sooty” room Randolph indicated, it is of similar size and right next door to the real one. The exhibition in

“We’ve told these stories on tours for a long time. But we needed a physical place to do that on site.” GARY SANDLING, vice president of visitor programs and visitor services at Monticello, on a new exhibit devoted to Sally Hemings, the enslaved woman who bore six of Thomas Jefferson’s children

the space doesn’t claim to be an exact reproduction of the room as Hemings would have known it, but instead uses multimedia and text to give an account of her life and relationship to Jefferson. Sally Hemings’ room wasn’t in the line of sight from the stately rooms that Jefferson inhabited on the ground floor, and one senses that for Jefferson, the problem of slavery needed to be kept carefully out of sight when thinking about the future of the nation he had founded. Jefferson believed that “Republicanism will be an engine of moral progress,” historian Peter S. Onuf says. Governed by the right ideals, perhaps even the problem of slavery would solve itself. That didn’t turn out to be the case. The abolition of slavery required enormous cost, and the cultivation of true equality remains an urgent project. The changes at Monticello reflect the ongoing nature of that work, reminding visitors that it wasn’t just that slavery built Monticello but that it was built into Monticello, into the worldview of its master and into the nation he helped conceive. A $25 million face-lift for Lincoln Memorial

VIRGINIA

Officials: Malicious party hacked state agency site

After nearly a century, timeless monument will get much-needed fixes

BILL O’LEARY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT The errant anti-aircraft bullets gouged the building in 1942. The gold Mylar confetti fluttered to the roof during the year 2000 festivities. The cracks in the huge marble blocks formed when the 2011 earthquake shook the massive structure. For almost a century, the timeless Lincoln Memorial has stood exposed to the sun, wind and rain as Washington changed around it and marked it with evidence of the passage of time. Now it is getting a $25 million top-to-bottom makeover, and Thursday the National Park Service provided a glimpse of how the project is going and showed some of the work that has to be done. Park Service experts trooped up a narrow internal stairway and then scaled several levels of construction scaffolding to reach the roof of the memorial and the so-called “Penthouse,” a smaller structure that sits stop the roof. They showed where the Aug. 23, 2011, magnitude 5.8 earthquake had nudged some of the giant blocks of marble out of place, caused long, jagged cracks and broken off pieces of the stone. Much of the work underway now is aimed at replacing the failing, almost 30-year-old roof. When the old roof slates were removed,

workers discovered bits of gold confetti from the 2000 celebration marking the new millennium. “It’s all over the place,” said NPS spokesman Mike Litterst. Extensive work also is planned on the earthquake-damaged stone and deteriorated caulk between the blocks. Litterst also pointed out a baseball-size gouge in the marble of the Penthouse’s ornate outer wall that was made by an errant anti-aircraft bullet in 1942. It was in the midst of World War II. The gun was set up on a nearby bridge to defend the city against air attack. And the gunner accidentally pulled the trigger, hitting the memorial in several places. It was the only time the memorial has ever come under fire — friendly fire at that,

$40M

Litterst said. The project is probably the biggest overhaul of the building since the structure was dedicated in 1922, officials have said. It is being funded largely through an $18 million donation from billionaire philanthropist David Rubenstein. The memorial, which attracts 7 million visitors a year, was thronged Thursday. It will remain open during the work, although parts of it may be closed off from time to time. The marble-columned edifice, which houses the 120-ton statue of Abraham Lincoln, is one of the most elegant and hallowed memorials in the country. Construction began in 1914. It was dedicated May 30, 1922. MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Heat wave could scorch D.C. next week Hazy, hot and humid. They’re the dreaded three H’s, and they’re headed to D.C. for the first time this year Sunday through Tuesday. On Monday and maybe Tuesday, the hottest weather of 2018 so far is expected as temperatures shoot up well into the 90s, high enough that some records could fall. Factoring in humidity, it is likely to feel like 100 degrees or higher. The National Weather Service wrote that Monday in particular “could be quite an oppressive day.” Temperatures could hit at least 90 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, which would meet the criteria for a heat wave, the second of 2018. The first heat wave occurred May 2 through 4, but the highs were just 91, 90 and 90, and humidity levels remained in check. (TWP)

Metro votes to add to Red Line service Transit agency to study how many extra trains the system can handle TRANSPORTATION The Metro board voted Thursday to provide funding to double Red Line service to Shady Grove, but the transit agency said it is unsure its infrastructure can handle the extra trains. For years, Metro has been turning back about half the Red Line’s outbound trains at Grosvenor and Silver Spring during rush hours to better serve the downtown core. The practice was initially started because of a shortage of rail cars. But Montgomery County residents and elected officials have been lobbying to end the practice to ease the commute for riders on the western end of the Red Line by providing them with more frequent service. Metro is studying whether the system can handle an additional 15 trains an hour at Shady Grove, a $2.5 million a year proposition that would provide the best-case scenario for those riders. The agency could also partially eliminate the turnback — sending 12 trains per hour to Shady Grove at a cost of $1.6 million. (In a third scenario, Metro would not adjust service.) The study is due in July. T he budget a mend ment

approved Thursday provides $1.25 million to restore full service at Shady Grove through next June, but Metro says it is awaiting the July study to determine how many extra trains the system can reliably handle. Thursday’s vote follows up on a 2015 resolution that instructed the agency to end the practice by this summer. “Ending the Grosvenor turnbacks has been a long-standing objective for improving service for Maryland Red Line riders for both Montgomery County and the State of Maryland,” board member Michael Goldman said. “Maryland [was pledged] the ending of the Grosvenor turnbacks when sufficient new 7000-series rail cars were available to permit the added trains.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Watchdog slams Comey, but does not find bias Justice Department report calls former FBI director ‘insubordinate’

Diary shows early racism of Einstein

James Comey was heavily criticized in a Justice Department report, but not for political favoritism.

JUSTIN TANG (THE CANADIAN PRESS VIA AP)

POLITICS In a stinging rebuke, the Justice Department watchdog declared Thursday that former FBI Director James Comey was “insubordinate” in his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation in the explosive final months of the 2016 presidential campaign. But it also found there was no evidence that Comey’s or the department’s final conclusions were motivated by political bias toward either candidate. President Trump and his supporters had looked to the muchanticipated report to provide a fresh line of attack against Comey and the FBI as Trump claims that a politically tainted bureau tried to undermine his campaign and — through the later Russia investigation — his presidency. Clinton and her supporters, on the other hand, have long complained that she was the one whose election chances were torpedoed by Comey’s investigation announcements about her email practices, in the summer and then shortly before the election. The inspector general concluded that the FBI director, who announced in the summer of 2016 that Clinton had been “extremely careless” with classified material but would not be charged with any crime, departed

PERSONAL EVOLUTION

from normal Justice Department protocol numerous times. But it also said, “We found no evidence that the conclusions by the prosecutors were affected by bias or other improper considerations; rather, we determined that they were based on the prosecutors’ assessment of the facts, the law and past department practice.” The conclusions were contained in a 500-page report that documents in painstaking detail one of the most consequential investigations in modern FBI history and reveals how the bureau, which for decades has endeavored to stand apart from politics, came to be entangled in the 2016 presidential election. Trump supporters quickly

focused on the report’s recounting of anti-Trump text messages from two FBI officials who worked the Clinton probe and later the Russia case, including one in which an agent says, “We’ll stop it” with regard to a possible Trump victory. Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the report “reaffirmed the president’s suspicions about Comey’s conduct and the political bias amongst some of the members of the FBI.” But the report rejects the Trump talking point that the FBI favored Clinton over him and that its leaders were driven by politics. It also does not second-guess the FBI’s conclusion that Clinton should not have been prosecuted.

Travel diaries Albert Einstein wrote during a voyage in the 1920s reveal that privately, the Nobel winner portrayed other races in a dehumanizing way. He called the Chinese “filthy” and “obtuse.” He wrote that Indians and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka “do little” and “need little.” Ze’ev Rosenkranz, assistant director of the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology, said, “It would be easy to say, yes, he became more enlightened,” especially after seeing the plight of African-Americans. But whether Einstein’s racist views later changed, Rosenkranz is not sure. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS Congressional Republicans distanced themselves Thursday from the Trump administration’s aggressive policy of separating children from their parents at the southern border even as the White House cited the Bible in defending its “zero tolerance” approach to illegal border crossings. “I can say that it is very biblical to enforce the law. That is actually repeated a number of times throughout the Bible,” said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. House Speaker Paul Ryan, RWis., and other GOP lawmakers said they are seeking to resolve the problem in a compromise immigration bill. How detained kids live in U.S.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

MICHAEL E. MILLER (THE WASHINGTON POST) U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS For more than a year, the old Walmart along the Mexican border in Brownsville, Texas, has been a mystery to those driving by on the highway. In place of the supercenter’s trademark logo hangs a sign: “Casa Padre.” But behind the sliding doors is a bustling city unto itself, equipped with classrooms, recreation centers and medical examination rooms. Casa Padre now houses more than 1,400 immigrant boys, dozens of them forcibly separated from their parents at the border by a new Trump administration “zero-tolerance” policy. On Wednesday, for the first time since that policy was announced, federal authorities allowed a small group of reporters to tour the secretive shelter, the largest of its kind in the nation. Inside, in what used to be a McDonald’s, shelter employees served scores of mostly teenage boys chicken, vegetables and plastic fruit cups. In the former loading docks, children watched the animated movie “Moana,” dubbed in Spanish. Where once there was a garage, six young people played basketball. “They used to do oil changes in here,” said Martin Hinojosa, director of compliance for Southwest Key Programs, the nonprofit that runs Casa Padre under a federal contract. Southwest Key has grown quickly in recent years, fueled by surges of young Central Americans seeking refuge in the north. The organization now houses 5,129 immigrant children in three states — approaching half the approximately 11,200 currently in federal custody — in facilities that are being strained to capacity, according to Juan Sanchez, the founder and chief executive. prosecuting all who cross the border illegally is creating a new category of residents at these holding centers, young boys and girls who are grappling with the trauma of being unexpectedly separated from their mothers and fathers. To accommodate them, Sanchez said, Southwest Key is retrofitting some facilities with smaller bathrooms, smaller sinks, smaller everything. “We’re trying to do the best that we can taking care of these children. Our goal ultimately is to reunite kids with their families,” he said. “We’re not a detention center. … What we operate are shelters that take care of kids. It’s a big, big difference.” He estimated that 10 percent of residents at Southwest Key facilities are children who were separated from their families. At

Casa Padre, which is licensed to house only older children, ages 10 to 17, the proportion is closer to 5 percent, he said. Each day, the federal government sends Casa Padre a list of children detained at the border to be placed in the shelter, said Jaime Garcia, program director for Southwest Key. After they are fed, clothed and showered, the boys spend up to 72 hours in “intake” as they are vaccinated and checked for maladies. Once they are medically cleared, they join the throng of boys in the shelter, where they stay for an average of 49 days, according to Southwest Key officials. They line up in hallways featuring murals of U.S. presidents and inspirational quotes. Donald Trump’s image is the first a visitor encounters, drawn in black

A booming business Southwest Key has received more than $1.1 billion to shelter unaccompanied minors since 2014, including $310 million in the current fiscal year, federal spending records show. Business briefly slumped a year ago, but the number of children in federal custody spiked by more than 20 percent between April and May of this year. and white against the backdrop of an American flag. “Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war,” reads the quote — a line he tweeted two years before becoming president.

The bedrooms at Casa Padre are doorless, with walls reaching only halfway to a 20-foot-high industrial ceiling that serves as a constant reminder of the building’s past. Next to their beds are lists of each boy’s belongings: two Tshirts, three pairs of socks, three pairs of underwear, one polo, a pair of jeans. Lights go out at 9 p.m. and come back on at 6 a.m. There are so many children that they attend school in two shifts: one in the morning, the other in the afternoon. They sit in small, numbered classrooms with yellow walls covered in posters of planets. On Wednesday, through tiny windows they waved to the reporters outside. “You might want to smile,” Southwest Key executive Alexia Rodriguez told the journalists at one point. “The kids feel a little like animals in a cage, being looked at.” Federal officials declined a request to interview children and employees at Casa Padre. But a Washington Post reporter recently interviewed a teenager who spent about three months in Casa Padre, from February until early May of this year. Jairom, 17, had fled an abusive home in Honduras and traveled through Mexico for a month, mostly by train, before he was detained crossing the Rio Grande. His family asked that only his first name be used. “They gave us a bit of bread, a nasty egg and some beans and an apple and some milk,” he said, describing breakfast. “Everyone complained about the food.” But after a month sleeping in the open and surviving on coconuts, it was a relief to have three meals a day and a mattress of his own. nation+world N.Y. attorney general alleges misuse of the charity for personal gain POLITICS New York’s attorney general sued President Trump and his foundation Thursday, accusing him of illegally using the charity’s money to settle disputes involving his business empire and to promote his political fortunes during his run for the White House. The president called the case “ridiculous.” The lawsuit against Trump and the foundation directors — his children Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka — seeks $2.8 million in restitution, additional unspecified penalties and the dissolution

of the foundation, which Trump had already pledged to dismantle. The attorney general’s twoyear investigation detailed what it said was a closely coordinated effort between Trump’s campaign and the foundation to burnish his political image by giving out big grants of other people’s money to veterans’ organizations during the run-up to the Iowa caucuses. “The foundation’s grants made Mr. Trump and the campaign look charitable and increased the candidate’s profile to Republican primary voters and among important constituent groups,” Democratic Attorney General Barbara Underwood’s lawsuit said. It accused the foundation of “improper and extensive political activity, repeated and willful

self-dealing transactions, and failure to follow basic fiduciary obligations.” Underwood referred her findings to the IRS

and the Federal Election Commission for possible further action. IRS and FEC representatives declined to comment. The 31-year-old foundation said that it has given more than $19 million to charitable causes while keeping expenses minimal. “This is politics at its very worst,” the charity said in a statement, noting that the former New York attorney general who began the investigation, Democrat Eric Schneiderman, was a vocal Trump opponent. Schneiderman started investigating the charity and ordered it to stop fundraising in New York in 2016, after The Washington Post reported that the foundation’s spending personally benefited the presidential candidate. EIFFEL TOWER

Paris authorities are building a permanent security belt around the Eiffel Tower, replacing the current metal fencing with glass walls. Each of the 450 bulletproof glass panels is about 2½ inches thick and nearly 10 feet high. They weigh 1.5 tons each. Aimed to be completed by September, the upgrade will allow visitors to admire the views from nearby Champde-Mars gardens. (AP)

LONDON | Clarrie Mendy, center, leads a procession Thursday as part of commemorations on the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower inferno in West London. An estimated 5,000 people walked silently through the neighborhood near Grenfell Tower to honor the 72 people who died when a fire ripped through the apartment block one year ago. It was the greatest loss of life in a fire on British soil since World War II.

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that at least half of bitcoin’s astronomical returns last year may have been a result of manipulation. What may be at the center is another digital token called tether. Tether, whose price is equivalent to the dollar, was designed to make cryptocurrency trading more seamless, by converting cash into digital currency. The company behind the token, also called Tether, claims that each tether “is always backed 1-to-1, by traditional currency held in our reserves.” The researchers examined transactions where people bought bitcoin using tether. On many exchanges, purchases can be made using only cryptocurrencies, not dollars, which makes tether a useful trading tool. They found that purchases were timed following downturns in the cryptocurrency market, leading to “sizable increases in bitcoin prices,” according to the paper, which was reported on first by The New York Times. The findings suggest that the issuers of tether were pumping out the token to purchase bitcoin, creating an artificial demand for the cryptocurrency, and driving up its price. The timing and magnitude of the purchases can’t be explained by organic investor demand, the researchers said. HAMZA SHABAN

Critics fear tournament could legitimize Putin’s actions abroad, policies

MOSCOW Russian President Vladimir Putin claims soccer and politics have nothing to do with each other, yet the World Cup he kicked off Thursday is about much more than sports. It’s about proving to the world that Russia is a global power broker and not an outcast, that it’s an open, confident and generous nation — and not an isolated, repressive place hobbled by sanctions. And the beleaguered Russian team’s 5-0 victory in the tournament opener Thursday against Saudi Arabia was just what Putin needed to make the point that Russia is ascendant again. Sidestepping deep divisions between his strongman worldview and that of many Western countries, Putin welcomed fans to his “hospitable” nation by inviting them to “make new friends with people who share the same values.” But critics fear the World Cup will legitimize Putin’s autocratic policies at home and Russia’s actions abroad, from alleged meddling in the U.S. presidential election to annexing the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine and a suspected nerve agent attack in Britain. Moscow vehemently denies any interference in the American vote or involvement in the attack against a former Russian spy in Salisbury. Racism, homophobia, conflicts over Syria and Ukraine — “all these rebukes have no relation to the World Cup,” his spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday. “Today the soccer dimension is the most important one.” The month-long World Cup

Rainbow flag at speech Alexander Agapov, the president of the Russian LGBT Sports Federation, held up the rainbow flag during President Vladimir Putin’s speech at the first World Cup game Thursday. “I believe you should practice what you preach and, if I’m telling LGBT football fans to be visible, then I should do it myself,” he said. Agapov said security staff had no problem with the flag, but he did receive abuse from another spectator outside the stadium, who said, “I don’t want that kind of world.” (AP)

— the first Russia has ever hosted — is also about Putin proving to his compatriots that he’s both their best global envoy and a man of the people, who brought the world’s most-watched sporting event to ordinary soccer fans in 11 cities across Russia’s expanse. That’s especially important for a country that prides itself on athletic prowess but whose last massive sporting event — the 2014 Sochi Olympics — was indelibly stained by revelations of doping so widespread that

Russia was banned from this year’s Winter Games. “It’s important for Russia to have this [tournament]; we can show that we are a global football power,” said Moscow financier Dmitry Finapetov. Geopolitics were front and center for Thursday’s opener, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as Putin’s star guest. Putin welcomed a “friendly global family” of soccer fans to celebrate the World Cup, but the Kremlin’s guest list showed where Russia’s allegiances lie: the head of the North Korean upper house of parliament, Lebanon’s prime minister and the presidents of Rwanda, Paraguay, Bolivia, Panama and leaders of eight friendly former Soviet republics. Britain’s royal family and top politicians are among those who pointedly stayed away. Russian authorities walked a careful line Thursday between hard-line security measures and a veneer of tolerance. Williams will be ready for camp

MLB owners approve transfer of team from 92-year-old to son Mark MLB Ted Lerner, the Washington real estate magnate who became the owner of the Nationals a dozen years ago, gave control of the club to his son, Mark, following a vote by Major League Baseball’s franchise owners Thursday. The transfer gives Mark Lerner, 64, voting power with MLB. It is the first indication of how the team will be governed by the next generation of the Lerner family, which does not intend to sell the team. The move was approved unanimously by baseball’s 29 other owners at the league’s offices in New York. “On a personal basis, obviously it’s very exciting for me,” Mark Lerner said before the vote. “It’s something I have dreamed of since I was a little guy. But more importantly, the faith my parents have in me for them to do this at this time, it’s very exciting in that regard. The faith also that

my family has in me … it means a lot that they’re around to share this with me.” Since the Lerners bought the Nationals from MLB in 2006 for $450 million, there had been no clear path of succession should Ted Lerner, now 92, step aside. The patriarch of the family governed by consensus with Mark and daughters Marla Tanenbaum and Debra Cohen, as well as Mark’s wife Judy, Marla’s husband Bob Tanenbaum, and Debra’s husband Ed Cohen. But it was always clear that Ted Lerner held the power, the veto vote, be it on nine-figure contracts or who should be the manager. Though Mark Lerner said his father will still have input, the family is preparing for a full transition. “I always knew that someday my son, Mark, would take over my role as Managing Principal Owner,” Ted Lerner said in a statement. “That day has come. I look forward to watching him take the helm and help lead this team to a world championship.” Mark Lerner began working

in the family real estate business since graduating from George Washington University 43 years ago. When the family took over the team, Mark was the Lerner

who most publicly embraced the role — occasionally donning a uniform and shagging fly balls at the team’s old spring headquarters in Viera, Fla., at RFK Stadium and, later, at Nationals Park. Ted Lerner maintains a lower profile, speaking infrequently. Mark sits in the first row and often interacts with fans. Still, Mark called his father “a great mentor,” and said he plans to continue using the family’s ruleby-consensus philosophy in running the Nationals. “That’s always worked well with us … and it’ll continue to be that way.” BARRY SVRLUGA

After five months of rehabilitation and recovery from offseason knee surgery, Redskins Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams said Wednesday he is “very close” to feeling like himself again. “I got the go-ahead to kind of do whatever I can without obviously being too aggressive on it,” he said. “I’m extremely blessed. I’ll be ready before camp.” Severe knee pain forced the 6-foot-5, 320-pound lineman into sporadic absences last season. Williams, soon to be 30, said he had screws put in his tibia to keep his kneecap in place and underwent a “slight microfracture” procedure. “I’m back to doing pretty much everything I was doing before.” Washington’s training camp starts July 26 in Richmond. Biting critiques follow Suarez

WORLD CUP Uruguay forward Luis Suarez is looking for redemption in Russia. He was vilified in South Africa in 2010 for preventing a goal with his hands. Four years later, he was condemned for biting an opponent in Brazil. Now, Suarez wants to finish a World Cup without controversy and to give people an opportunity to talk about his play and not his unsportsmanlike behavior. The Barcelona player, who is one of the top strikers in the world, has made it clear that he wants to remove “the thorn on a personal level.” Suarez was given a nine-match ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in Brazil. That incident, along with the handball against Ghana in 2010, is among the most enduring memories of his career. The incident against Ghana took place in the match’s final minutes and the Africans surely would have won had the ball gone into the back of the net. Instead, Uruguay won and advanced to the semifinals. Suarez bit Chiellini four years later, also toward the end of the

match when the score was 0-0. The referee didn’t see the incident and conceded a corner to Uruguay from which the South Americans scored and eliminated Italy from the tournament. In both games, critics claimed that Uruguay only advanced because of Suarez’s dirty plays, giving him a reputation as a cheater that he hasn’t been able to shake.

“He has thought about it. He has prepared. … In addition to being a great player, Luis is very intelligent.” URUGUAY COACH OSCAR TABAREZ ,

on Luis Suarez behaving himself.

Suarez bit Otman Bakkal in 2010 when he played for Ajax, and Branislav Ivanovic in 2013 when he played for Liverpool. Suarez has also admitted to diving, and in 2011 he was punished by the English Football Association for making racist comments against Patrice Evra. Suarez denied the accusations. With his controversial background, Suarez’s career seemed that it would most certainly fade following his suspension in 2014. However, Barcelona gave him a new opportunity and the Uruguayan took advantage of it. He hasn’t committed any serious offenses since, but doubts remain. He regularly antagonizes his opponents and the referees, and often questions the calls made against him. So, the obvious question on the eve of Uruguay’s match against Egypt on Friday in Group A is whether Suarez can control his impulses in Russia. If anybody believes in him, it’s Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez, who has known the 31-year-old since he was on the country’s youth teams. When asked Thursday if Suarez was more mature, Tabarez said “without any doubt.” “Maturity comes in all areas of life — in football, in family life [and] in personal life,” the coach said. Three World Cup games to watch this weekend Portugal vs. Spain

Argentina vs. Iceland

Germany vs. Mexico

11 a.m. Sunday, FS1

Both nations boast rich histories but are inundated by distractions. Spain fired coach Julen Lopetegui, who was unbeaten in 20 matches but recently accepted a job at Real Madrid, two days before the start of the tournament. Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo has created buzz by hinting he may depart that same club.

In its EuroCup debut two years ago, Iceland forced a surprise 1-1 draw with eventual champion Portugal. In the tiny country’s first World Cup match, it has to come up with an answer for Lionel Messi. Can Iceland’s height and disciplined defense give it a chance against Argentina’s abundance of attackers?

El Tri kicks off its tournament against defending champion and co-favorite Germany (Brazil has the same odds to win). The Germans were 10-0 in qualifying. Mexico’s fluid use of formations, strength in the midfield and weakness on the back line should make for an entertaining, high-scoring affair. (EXPRESS/AP)

External review opened in death of Terps player Maryland has asked an external group to review whether proper protocol was McNair followed in the treatment and care of an offensive lineman who died Wednesday. Jordan McNair was hospitalized after a team workout May 29 and died two weeks later. He was 19. Maryland executive athletic director Damon Evans said Thursday that McNair had “difficulty recovering” after finishing 10 sprints of 110 yards. He was treated on the field and taken to the training room before a 911 call was made. Evans did not reveal a cause of death. McNair was a 6-foot-4, 325-pound offensive lineman preparing for his sophomore season. He played in one game last year. (AP)

DISNEY/PIXAR

The Parr family gets the ball rolling on a new set of obstacles in the Pixar sequel “Incredibles 2.”

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

All too powerful? ‘Incredibles 2’ puts its heroes to task The basis of Pixar’s “The Incredibles” was a statement: If everyone is special, then no one is. The basis of “Incredibles 2” is a question: How much protection leads to powerlessness? The sequel picks up minutes after the 2004 original ended, which is just enough time for the animation to get insanely better. Superhero family the Parrs are up against the Underminer, and as the fight ensues, they realize that fighting as a family is more complicated than they thought — after all, someone has to watch over baby Jack-Jack. We’ll come back to JackJack in a minute. Writer-director Brad Bird’s

“Incredibles 2” certainly shares some of the suspense and humor of its predecessor, but it doesn’t quite reach the standard the first film set (it also has some strobe effects that really should come with a seizure warning). The sequel does, however, have a more compelling villain: Screenslaver, whose main goal is to eliminate superheroes. Just as the omnipresence of screens has encouraged us to live our lives more passively, says Screenslaver, we rely too much on superheroes to save us, rather than trying to save ourselves. Cinematic villains have gotten much more interesting lately — hi, Killmonger and Thanos! — and Screenslaver is part of the pattern. There’s a point there: If you see

Elastigirl (voiced by Holly Hunter) rushing to stop the imminent crashing of your train, you’re less likely to try to figure out a solution on your own and more likely to sit there and scream. The presence of superheroes changes the role of normal people from taking down a bad guy to fleeing in terror. Why try to fight when Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) is just going to show up and drop a building on the villain? It’s something parents have to struggle with, even those who have super-babies. Though Jack-Jack is multipowered, like all babies he has an innate desire to severely injure himself in new and different ways. It’s just that instead of climbing the coffee table or eating batteries, he

flings himself into different dimensions. It’s clear he needs protection. The line is blurrier when it comes to the older kids, Violet (Sarah Vowell) and Dash (Huck Milner). Protect kids from everything, be it physical harm or stress or heartbreak, and they never learn to cope with those things on their own. Removing those protections opens them to danger; keeping them leads to an eternal childhood. It’s the same thing with the world at large. Even if we could figure out a way to remove all threats, it would come at a tremendous cost in terms of personal liberty. How do you make sure you’ll never be the victim of a street mugging? Never go out on the street. The safety is there, but the price of protection is too high. “Incredibles 2” doesn’t have answers. It simply posits the question anyone with the power and desire to protect someone else has to ask: When do you step in, and when do you step back to see if someone can fly? The crux of “A Kid Like Jake,” a film directed with grace and humor by Silas Howard, isn’t parental anxiety around a gender-nonconforming child, or the drama of a toddler trying to communicate his feelings. Rather, it’s the quandary faced by two parents (Claire Danes and Jim Parsons) who want to support their son’s emerging identity but not exploit it or pin it down while it’s still in formation. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Hearts Beat Loud’ PG-13, 97 min.

“Hearts Beat Loud” zeroes in on the bittersweet nature of a father’s (Nick Offerman) special bond with his daughter (Kiersey Clemons), who has inherited his love of, and affinity for, music. Using an eclectic array of music — both original tunes and a carefully curated soundtrack — director Brett Haley’s movie articulates a point: Love is love. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

Not reaching for the stars A stellar cast salvages ‘Tag,’ an enjoyable but unambitious comedy

Unnecessary ‘SuperFly’ just isn’t up to snuff

WARNER BROS. PICTURES

FILM REVIEW “Tag,” a genial comedy about best buds who have been playing the same game of tag for 30 years, is about arrested adolescence at its core. And this haphazard collection of setups, stunts and gags has that same scattershot, digressive energy. The best way to appreciate this fitfully funny collection of japes and jests is to treat it like any teenage boy in your midst: Focus on the positives and know that even its worst is only a phase. Based on a Wall Street Journal story about 10 men who, every February, relive the tag game they started as high school students in Spokane, Wash., “Tag” whittles the group down to five, who choose the merry month of May to engage in all manner of high jinks, disguises and carefully choreographed pranks to tap one another on the shoulder and announce, “You’re It.” (Whoever is It at 11:59 p.m. on May 31 has to live with the ignominy for a year.) As the movie opens, Hogan (Ed Helms) goes through elaborate motions to tag Bob (Jon Hamm) and to tell him that Jerry (Jeremy Renner), the only member of the group who’s never been tagged, is getting married later that month. Their quarry firmly in their sights, the guys — who live in various cities across the country — join forces to descend

on the wedding and finally bring the elusive Jerry to heel, even if it means sabotaging his vows. As a “Hangover”-esque bromance-slash-action comedy, “Tag” mostly consists of set pieces in which the principals try to outsmart and corner each other: Director Jeff Tomsic stages these sequences as slow-motion shootouts, only with powdered doughnuts and knitting bags as ammo. The weaponized silliness results in some painful pratfalls, including one character’s plunge from an apartment fire escape and, later, having a thermos of hot coffee thrown in his face. The key to “Tag’s” success lies in the ensemble of accomplished

‘Tag’ (R, 100 min.) DIRECTOR: Jeff Tomsic STARS: Ed Helms, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Hannibal Buress IN A NUTSHELL: In this comedy based on a true story, a group of adult friends consider ending a game of tag they have played every May for the past 30 years.

comic players, who mesh here with antic, good-natured chemistry. Helms and Hamm are joined by Jake Johnson (playing a shiftless pothead), Hannibal Buress (the master of spacey non sequiturs) and Renner, who plays the ninjalike Jerry as if he’s auditioning for his next

“Bourne” movie. Isla Fisher is less ingratiating as Hogan’s unpleasantly cutthroat wife, and Annabelle Wallis often looks utterly at sea as the Journal reporter who joins the guys on their greatest get ever. But thanks to the movie’s nimble group of actors, their deadpan interior monologues and some well-executed ambushes and booby traps, “Tag” winds up being an undemanding, if instantly disposable, pleasure. As much fun as the movie often is, an end-credit montage suggests that the real-life guys are probably more amusing and ingeniously diabolical than their fictional counterparts. Vulture: Feminist book “Her Body and Other Parties” in development as anthology series

FILM REVIEW The first scene of “SuperFly” tells you all you need to know about the protagonist, a man called Priest (Trevor Jackson). Entering a crowded nightclub, Priest at first doesn’t seem to belong. He finds a man who owes him money and — with quiet intimidation but no threat of violence — turns the debtor’s swagger into a plea for more time. Priest doesn’t just belong. Priest is in charge. Specifically, he’s in charge of a vast cocaine operation in this reimagining of the 1972 blaxploitation classic “Super Fly.” The charismatic Jackson (of TV’s “Grown-ish”) brings a nice depth to Priest, particularly in his interactions with longtime partner Eddie (“Mudbound’s” Jason Mitchell). But Juju (Kaalan Walker), the main villain, has little motivation. And, as Priest’s girlfriends — yes, plural — actresses Lex Scott Davis and Andrea Londo seem to exist in a character vacuum. They’re the lucky ones; most of the other female characters are apparently on-screen merely to be naked and/or killed. Did this film — from Julien Christian Lutz, better known as Director X — need to be made? Not really. The new version is a decent example of the barrage of reboots storming theaters lately, but that’s all it is: decent. What it really wants is to be a bit more than it should be, or is. EXPECTED RELEASE: March 29

EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 12

SUMMARY: Sometimes journalism requires one to be tough, such as when you have to watch a trailer for a movie about an abused baby elephant. While it looks like the live-action remake will have most of the same elements from the animated film, it’s probably safe to assume they’ll leave out the superracist portrayal of crows. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Ryan Gosling reunites with his “La La Land director Damien Chazelle in what is probably a pretty solid attempt to get another Oscar nomination. Gosling plays Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. The irony is the movie probably required more technology than when Neil Armstrong ACTUALLY walked on the moon. K.P.K.

“Make clothes that are political; ... but printing headlines about abusers into clothes for women to wear feels like you’re asking them to be walking billboards for pain?” @RACHSYME, tweeting about Denimcratic, a female-owned jeans company

that tackles politics. The company’s latest line includes skinny jeans bearing news reports of sexual harassment that appeared in publications such as The Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune. Denimcratic was profiled in The New York Times, but readers found the line’s activist mission to be misplaced.

“Me: ‘I am tired.’ Dad: ‘Hi Tired, nice to meet you.’” @WERDOFMOUTH, contributing a

tweet with the trending hashtag “Funny Things Dads Say” ahead of Father’s Day, which is this Sunday. Twitter users were encouraged to tweet some of the most commonly heard dad phrases. Other relatable submissions included “that lawn isn’t going to mow itself,” from @KevinNoahRiley2, and the everpopular “Ask your mother,” from @Rkopala.

“Every single person in the ‘Degrassi’ cast somehow glowed up in the best way.” @AGERENESH, reacting to Drake’s music video for “I’m Upset.” The rapper surprised fans by having the video be a reunion of “Degrassi,” the Canadian TV show where Drake first found fame. The video has his character, Jimmy, reunite with his best friend Spinner, and Drake’s entourage chasing the character Rick, who shot Jimmy in Season 4.

“What if Steve Trevor is just a projection of Diana’s imagination and she’s the one who put him in a track suit with a fanny pack?” @RUSTYPOLISHED, offering a theory

on how Steve Trevor (played by Chris Pine) can appear in “Wonder Woman 1984,” the sequel to the 2017 hit superhero film. Director Patty Jenkins tweeted a photo of Pine in costume, sending fans into a frenzy, since Trevor died in the first movie.

“Every single person on this cover looks like they’re plotting to kill Batman.” @LINDYYAY, joking about the

various looks of the rappers in the 11th annual Freshman Issue of XXL magazine. This year’s class features artists such as Lil Pump (center) and Stefflon Don, the sole woman on the cover and the first U.K. artist ever featured.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) What another wants today may be a mystery to you for a time, until you cross paths and discover that your desires are actually quite similar. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may not be able to do what you had planned exactly as you had laid it out, but with a few adjustments you can still get the same results. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may have to act quickly today to stem the tide of ill intent that is swelling all around you. You restore positive thinking very soon. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Something you’ve taken for granted for quite some time is not likely to be accessible to you today, so you must be ready to make adjustments.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You

mustn’t try to do too much today. Limit your reach in order to be sure that you try only what you know you can accomplish.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are likely to start something today that takes off and ultimately engulfs a great many. This is not a bad thing — so explore freely. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You mustn’t reveal so much others think they know you inside and out. It’s important for you to keep them guessing for a while longer. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Teen bullied by meme culture gone too far

‘Nothing but respect for my father’s name!’ Paris Jackson scrubbed clean a Michael Jackson Hollywood Walk of Fame star that was covered in graffiti on Wednesday. She later realized that the star was not her father’s but belonged to a radio personality of the same name. “Apparently it’s not his actual star but hey that’s still his name,” she tweeted. She also wrote on Instagram: “I understand that there is a difference between the radio emblem and the record, but a name is a name.” (EXPRESS)

“Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown deleted her Twitter account Wednesday after users posted memes depicting her as homophobic. The memes featured photos of the 14-year-old with homophobic captions. Vox wrote a post explaining that the meme was used by some members of the LGBT community and meant as dark irony. Brown has been a supporter of LGBT rights and wore a blue ampersand pin to the MTV Movie and TV Awards in 2017 to honor the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Together movement. Her secondary Twitter account, @Milliestopshate, which she created to stop bullying, remains active. (AP/EXPRESS)
