Gay Marriage Vote Stalls in N.Y. Closely divided state senate decision may rest on 2 Republicans Gay couples watched anxiously as a closely divided New York Senate started, then stalled, down the path toward a vote on whether to legalize gay marriage, a pivotal decision with national consequences that looked more and more likely to rest in the hands of just two Republican Catholics from conservative upstate areas. One, Sen. Stephen Saland of the Hudson Valley’s Poughkeepsie, is a widely respected veteran legislator who authored hundreds of crime and education laws. The other crucial swing vote is rookie Mark Grisanti of Buffalo, one of the young breed of Republicans who rode the 2010 GOP tide in a district where even many of the Democrats are conservative. They are the two clearly undecided votes among Senate Republicans who defeated a gay marriage bill in 2009, but who may get

Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre, speaks to reporters after meeting with Gov. Andrew Cuomo on legalizing gay marriage Thursday in Albany, N.Y.
Cekdj_d] Fh[iikh[ The Democrat-led Assembly passed the gay marriage legalization bill Wednesday night, and Republicans met early Thursday to discuss it. But political considerations got in the way, and suddenly the bill was linked to a tax cap and rent control. Now, a vote may not come until next week, if at all. The pressure has been clear this week: Republican Sen. Roy McDonald, who flipped to support gay marriage, blurted into reporters’ tape recorders: “Well, [expletive] it; I don’t care what you think,” he said of critics. (AP)
another chance within days. Gays and lesbians watching the every move of New York lawmakers are in the midst of a nail-biter. It’s a political issue that is deeply personal for many New Yorkers who are cycling through anxiety, excitement and frustration. Ron Zacchi of Marriage Equality USA came to the state Capitol on Wednesday to track the bill — or at least try to — as its fate was discussed in private. Advocates across the country were doing the same from a distance as they attempted to find out whether New York will become the sixth and largest state where gay marriage is legal. Social media sites buzzed with meetingby-meeting updates. “It creates a lot of anxiety while you’re waiting to find out if you’ll be granted the right that your family, friends and even your own parents took for granted,” Zacchi said. W hile a few senators have teased they could switch sides and use the attention to promote their own measures, the 67-year-old Saland has not tipped his hand and has stayed, in his words, “under the radar.” (AP)

College Students More Confident Study says freshmen feel more superior than past generations
DC Rider 2.0
9^_YW]e Among academics who track the behavior of young adults and teens, there’s a touchy debate: Should the word “entitled” be used when talking about today’s younger people? Are they overconfident? Jean Twenge, author of the book “Generation Me,” is in the middle of the discussion. The San Diego State University psychology professor has made a career out of finding data that she says show that college students Twenge and others their age are more selfcentered — narcissistic even — than past generations. Now she’s turned up data showing that they also feel more superior about themselves than their elders did when they were young. That study was recently published online in the British journal Self and Identity “There are some advantages and some disadvantages to self-esteem, so having some degree of confidence is often a good thing,” says Twenge. But as she sees it, there’s a growing disconnect between self-perception and reality. “It’s not just confidence. It’s overconfidence.”

I[b\#9ed\_Z[dY[ '&' In the study on confident young adults, Jean Twenge and her colleagues found that a growing percentage of incoming college freshmen rated themselves as “above average” in several categories compared with college freshmen who were surveyed in the 1960s. When it came to social self-confidence, about half of the freshmen questioned in 2009 said they were above average, compared to less than a third in 1966. Meanwhile, 60 percent in 2009 rated their intellectual selfconfidence as above average, compared with 39 percent in 1966. (AP)
And that, she says, can pose problems, in relationships and the workplace — though others argue that it’s not so easy to generalize. “If you actually look at the data, you can’t just condense it into a sound bite. It’s more nuanced than that,” says John Pryor, director of UCLA’s Cooperative Institutional Research program, which produces an annual national survey of hundreds of thousands of college freshman, on which Twenge based her latest study. DWj_ed MWi^_d]jed Three of the nation’s largest Internet service providers are cooperating with a new National Security Agency program to sift through the traffic of major defense contractors with the goal of blocking cyberattacks by foreign adversaries, defense and industry officials say. The novel program, which began last month on a voluntary, trial basis, relies on sophisticated NSA data sets to identify malicious programs slipped into the vast stream of Internet data flowing to the nation’s largest defense firms. Such attacks, including one last month against Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin, are nearly con-
stant as rival nations and terrorist groups seek access to U.S. military secrets. “We hope the ... cyberpilot can be the beginning of something bigger,” Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn III said at a global security conference in Paris on Thursday. “It could serve as a model that can be transported to other critical infrastructure sectors.” The prospect of an NSA role in the monitoring of Internet traffic already had raised concerns among privacy activists, and Lynn’s suggestion that the program might be extended beyond the work of defense contractors threatened to raise the stakes further. No. 2 Declared Al-Qaeda’s Chief 9W_he Osama bin Laden’s longtime deputy Ayman al-Zawahri, a fiery ideologue who is known for his deep hatred of the West and who helped plan the 9/11 attacks, has taken control of al-Qaeda after the death last month of the terror network’s founder, the group said Thursday. Al-Zawahri has been credited with bringing tactical and organizational cunning to al-Qaeda, which has found itself increasingly decentralized and prone to internal disputes following its expulsion from Afghanistan after the 2001 U.S. invasion. Al-Zawahri pledged earlier this

month to avenge the U.S. raid on May 2 that killed bin Laden, the alQaeda founder and mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, and to continue the terror network’s campaign of attacks against the U.S. and other Western interests. “The general command of alQaeda, after completing consultations, decided that the sheik doctor
Abu Mohammed Ayman al-Zawahri take the responsibility and be in charge of the group,” said a statement purportedly by al-Qaeda and posted on militant websites. Al-Zawahri has been behind the use of suicide bombings and the independent militant cells that have become the network’s trademarks. But U.S. intelligence officials have
said that some al-Qaeda members find al-Zawahri to be a controlling micromanager who lacks bin Laden’s populist appeal. Because of that, U.S. intelligence will watch for signs al-Zawahri is a leader in name only, with affiliates branching out even more on their own, said U.S. officials in Washington. Zawahri also faces challenges in promoting al-Qaeda’s agenda of a religiously led state spanning the Muslim world after finding itself sidelined in the wake of popular revolts driven by aspirations for Western-style democracy. The Pakistani Taliban welcomed the appointment of al-Zawahri as the new al-Qaeda chief. “We share the same path with al-Qaeda. We are allies,” Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan said by telephone. (AP)

Almost 150 people required hospital treatment and close to 100 were arrested after rioters swept through downtown Vancouver after the Canucks’ 4-0 loss to the Boston Bruins in the decisive Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. Police Chief Jim Chu said officers identified some in the crowd as the same people who smashed windows and caused trouble through the same streets during the 2010 Winter Olympics. “These were people who came equipped with masks, goggles and gasoline,” he said. “They had a plan.” Mayor Gregor Robertson said “organized hoodlums bent on creating chaos” incited the riot. A local business leader estimated more than 50 businesses were damaged. While police said it was mostly young thugs responsible for the

?j >_ji j^[ Ifeji I don’t own a car, but I still care deeply about parking — or, rather, the ability of the people I mooch rides from to find it. So I think my chauffeurs will be pleased to hear about the Parker app by Streetline (free, for iPhone and Android, although the latter version is a bit buggy).
FATTEN UP YOUR PIGGY BANK • On account balances starting at $10,000 • Flexible access to your money when you need it • Hundreds of locations at your service
It has some valuable functions for anyone who gets behind the wheel, including a timer that reminds you when your meter’s about to expire and the option to pinpoint where you left your car so you can find it with GPS. In a multilevel garage? Follow the prompts and snap a photo of the floor number. But for Washingtonians, the extra selling point is that Streetline’s
partnered up with Metro to make it easier to ditch your ride at a station. Parker’s packed with info on every Metro lot and garage in D.C., Maryland and Virginia, so you’ll know what to expect in terms of hours, rates and payment methods. Most niftily, for the Fort Totten station, the app can access data from a Metro pilot program that’s using sensors embedded in the pavement
to monitor real-time availability in the “Kiss & Ride” lot. I just checked right now and can tell you that there are four spaces open. Maybe that doesn’t seem like helpful information, but these sensors could wind up in more lots and garages to help commuters plan their journeys on the fly. “If they find out one station is full, they can bypass it,” says Kelly Schwager, Streetline’s vice president of communications. This is the first time the company has used its technology for transit purposes. But it’s already in other urban areas, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. Say you’re looking for a spot in Hollywood, where the streets are lined with sensors. You simply search the screen for a block with available spots and drive straight there, potentially saving the time and gas normally wasted circling the neighborhood. The other pilot program in our region is at the University of Maryland, which is Streetline’s first campus site. In addition to parking space info, UMd. is using the sensors in safety zones as a way to notify authorities when people are parked there illegally. Through the app, you can also keep track of which electric vehicle charging stations are in use. Cities may soon be able to rely on this information to determine smarter meter pricing, regulate traffic patterns and shift municipal workers based on which areas are booming at various points in the day, Schwager explains. All of that sounds pretty useful to me, even if I’m not driving.

Tired of broken Metro escalators? Bothered by constant rail work and other inconveniences? Metro officials on Thursday unveiled a new information campaign aimed at keeping abreast of an ongoing effort to rebuild the 35-year-old transit system. The goal is to help commuters understand that inconveniences they’re encountering now should
pay off later with an improved rail system. Metro says it’s investing more than $5 billion over the next six years in more than 100 projects, including renovating 12 Metro rail stations; replacing 100 Metrobuses and rehabilitating 100 more; purchasing new police radios; and fixing up three bus garages. Metro says it’s relying on social networks and a redesigned homepage, Metroopensdoors.com, to spread the word about the ongoing capital campaign. There will also be a Facebook page and Twitter feed as part of the campaign, dubbed “Metro Forward.” The information push will be

A special section on the website acknowledges a problem that has bedeviled Metro customers recently: Roughly 150 escalators at 25 stations are in the lengthy process of being either replaced or overhauled. “Over 100 new projects provide you with a better ride, better system and better experience,” Metro’s general manager and chief executive, Richard Sarles, said. The campaign was announced as part of Thursday’s National Dump the Pump Day, which encourages travelers to use public transit instead of their cars to save money. (AP)

Two political operatives for former governor Robert Ehrlich’s campaign for governor were indicted Thursday on charges stemming from election-day robocalls that prosecutors say were intended to drive down turnout for Ehrlich’s opponent. A Baltimore grand jury indicted Paul Schurick, a senior official for Ehrlich’s campaign, and Baltimore political consultant Julius Henson after an investigation by Maryland state prosecutors. Schurick, 54, and Henson, 62, are charged with three counts of conspiracy to violate state election laws and one count of attempting to influence a voter’s decision whether to go to the polls through the use of fraud. Weiner Felled by Scandal N.Y. Democrat yields to pressure to resign in wake of ‘personal mistakes’ made online
Seared by scandal, New York Rep. Anthony Weiner announced his resignation from Congress on Thursday, done in by lewd photos he took of himself, sent to women online and then adamantly lied about after being caught. Democratic Party leaders, concerned that Weiner could weigh the party down in the 2012 elections, welcomed the announcement after days spent trying to coax, push and finally coerce the wayward 46-yearold into quitting. Known as brash, liberal and ambitious, Weiner had run for mayor of New York in 2005 and had been expected to do so again. He was in his seventh term in Congress. At an appearance in Brooklyn that drew hecklers and supporters, Weiner, no longer defiant and combative, apologized “for the personal mistakes I have made and the embarrassment I have caused,” particularly to his wife, Huma Abedin. Pregnant with the couple’s first child, she was absent as she had been 10 days ago when Weiner first admitted sending inappropriate messages and photos to women online — after earlier denying emphatically he had done so. His eventual confession triggered a tabloid-style frenzy in print and online that only grew more pronounced a few days later when an X-rated photo surfaced on a website. In his brief farewell appearance, Weiner said he initially hoped the controversy would fade but then realized “the distraction that I have created has made that impossible.” That conclusion echoed party officials who had become worried that the intense public focus on Weiner — and the Republican political rhetoric sure to follow — would complicate their campaign efforts in 2012. “Congressman Weiner exercised poor judgment in his actions and poor judgment in his reaction to the revelations,”

May 27: Rep. Anthony Weiner uses his Twitter account to send a waist-down photograph of a man’s underwear-clad crotch to a 21-year-old woman in Seattle. He quickly deletes it and tweets that his account was hacked.
June 6: After a blog posts shirtless photos the congressman purportedly sent to a second woman, Weiner tearfully apologizes at a news conference and admits to sending the underwear photo and lying about it, and to engaging in inappropriate contact with six women on the Internet and over the phone. “This was me doing a dumb thing and doing it repeatedly and lying about it,” he says.
May 29: The photo was just “a distraction” perpetrated by a hacker, spokesman Dave Arnold says. June 1: Weiner says he cannot say “with certitude” whether the photo was of him and says he didn’t report it to police because “I’m not really sure it rises, no pun intended, to that level.”
7Yj J^h[[0 J^[ :[l[befc[dji June 8: An X-rated photo Weiner purportedly took of himself surfaces on a website. News breaks that Weiner’s wife of less than a year, Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, is pregnant. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., becomes the first of several House Democrats to say he should leave office.
June 10: Weiner acknowledges he exchanged online messages with a 17-year-old girl in Delaware but says that nothing improper happened. June 11: Weiner announces his plans for a temporary leave of absence from the House, as well as his intentions to seek unspecified treatment.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement released moments after he spoke. “Today, he made the right judgment in resigning.” Weiner made his announcement at the same senior citizen center in Brooklyn where he announced his candidacy for the New York city council in 1992. He declined to answer questions, leaving unaddressed whether he envisioned his resignation as the end of a once-promising political career — or merely a painful pause of uncertain duration. “Now I’ll be looking for other ways to contribute my talents so that we live up to that most New York and American of ideals,” he said. Nor did he explain his presence in New York, several days after issuing a statement that said he was seeking treatment. Other Democrats said he had left the city to do so. He had succeeded his mentor, Sen. Chuck Schumer, who vacated the seat to run for the Senate. Schumer was one of a small number of prominent Democratic leaders who did not call for Weiner’s resignation. Weiner’s departure marks the end of a bizarre period born of his misuse of such social media as Twitter and Facebook. Weiner served on the New York City Council from 1992 until his election to the House in 1998. His district includes parts of Queens and Brooklyn. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has the authority to call a special election to fill the seat once the congressman submits his resignation. (AP)
7Yj <ekh0 J^[ H[i_]dWj_ed Tuesday: President Obama says on NBC’s “Today” show: “I think he’s embarrassed himself. He’s acknowledged that. He’s embarrassed his wife and his family. Ultimately, there’s going to be a decision for him and his constituents. I can tell you that, if it was me, I would resign.”
Thursday: Weiner resigns at a news conference in Brooklyn, where an audience member, shown, heckled him, just one day after former porn actress Ginger Lee claimed that she exchanged about 100 emails and messages with Weiner. Lee said Wednesday that he asked her to lie about their communications. (AP)

Luke Donald hasn’t won a whole lot, just two stroke-play tournaments in the last five years. And he doesn’t hit the ball that far. Quite atypical for the No. 1 player in the world. The 33-year-old Englishman, who is ranked 153rd on the PGA Tour in driving distance, did indeed carry the mantle of the planet’s top golfer into this week’s U.S. Open, where he shot a plus-3 74 in ThursThe number of day’s first round. people to hold S ome m i g ht the No. 1 ranking on the PGA Tour call it a quirk of the system. Luke Donald stumbled to a plus 3 at Congressional Country Club on Thursday,
>_i 9kf ?i >Wb\#F^_b Phil Mickelson failed in his first 20 attempts to win the U.S. Open. If he’s to end the streak this weekend, the most difficult part may be staying motivated without Tiger Woods in the field. “I’ve always felt as though Tiger helped bring out some of my best golf over the years,” Mickelson said. “The challenge now ... is pushing myself to achieve a level of play that is in there without him forcing me to do so.” Mickelson, who turned 41 Thursday, finished second at the U.S. Open in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2009. got the whole package now.” Donald is the fourth player to hold the top spot in the last 12 months, a revolving door made possible by Tiger Woods’ personal problems and injuries. He vaulted ahead of Lee Westwood two weeks ago by beating his countryman in a playoff at the BMW PGA Championship in England, achieving a milestone he first seriously — and perhaps overzealously — considered a possibility about five years ago. “It probably wasn’t the right mind-set, in a way,” Donald said. “I pressed too hard and didn’t let things happen and got upset at myself when things weren’t perfect.” There are two ways to look at Donald’s rise. He has a remarkable run of top-10 finishes in 15 of his last 16 events, including stroke play and match play tournaments on both the U.S. and European tours. Does this count as a string of success or a series of lost opportunities? “Well, certainly, if you’re not in contention, you don’t have a chance to win,” Donald said. “That’s the first goal, is to get in contention and have that chance. And I’ve obviously done a great job of that. Certainly, I could look back and think that I could have turned a couple of those seconds into victories, for sure. But, overall, it’s been a very satisfying few months.” (AP)

One of the signature holes at Congressional, the 10th is almost its shortest. The giant water hazard is a problem for the run-of-the-mill golfer, but the pros should have little trouble clearing it to reach the green. The short distance is made more difficult because the hole plays downhill, which means finesse is in high demand. If the pin is on the right side of the green, this hole will become more daunting because that will force the players to aim near the bunker and the water. An interesting fact: The 10th hole used to be the concluding hole until it was moved ahead on the course in 2006.

Experiment with Werth atop lineup pays early dividends
Sour Grapes From A D.C. Sports Fan
If you thought Nationals manager Jim Riggleman’s recent decision to have $126 million slugger Jayson Werth bat leadoff and his starting pitcher hit eighth was a desperate act, you would not be wrong. Riggleman admits as much. “What we were doing is just trying to get a little spark,” he said, “just trying to do a little something different because we were in quite a rut where we weren’t scoring runs.” BALTIMORE AT WASHINGTON

It was a move he’d been contemplating since before the season began, though, Riggleman said. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has employed the strategy more than anyone in recent years. Riggleman, a former Cardinals
While an intense on-the-field rivalry hasn’t developed between the Nats and Orioles — who play this weekend in D.C. — there is always friendly competition in the stands. The Nationals-O’s series in Baltimore last month drew an average of 30,391 fans, well more than the Orioles’ season average of 20,455. Washington is averaging 21,812 fans per game this season. On the field, the Orioles hold a 16-15 edge in the all-time series. D.T.
coach, sought La Russa’s counsel during spring training while researching the concept. Ultimately, the Nationals chose to begin the season with Werth hitting second, though he moved to third when Ryan Zimmerman went on the disabled list after eight games. Last Saturday, just prior to Zimmerman’s return, Riggleman pulled the trigger, moving Werth to the leadoff spot and the pitcher up from the traditional ninth spot in the order. With Werth, who leads the team in on-base percentage, in the lead-
off spot, the strategy ideally creates more RBI opportunities for the second, third and fourth hitters. Once the lineup cycles through, the theory goes, a better hitter in the No. 9 hole can lead to more opportunities for the top hitters in the order to bat with men on base. Early returns have been positive. Through Wednesday, the Nationals have won all four games with the revised lineup, averaging 5.5 runs per game, well above their 3.9-runsper-game average on the season. Said Riggleman: “We’ll just see where we go with it.” DEREK TURNER
U.S. Seeks to Step Up Against Jamaicans IeYY[h The fact that the U.S. men’s national soccer team is preparing for Sunday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal at RFK Stadium is hardly a surprise. As for how it got there — that’s an entirely different matter. The favored Americans played through an underwhelming group stage, leaving much to be desired and many questions unanswered. As a result, they failed to finish first in their group for the first time in 11 Gold Cups, suffered a surpris-
ing loss to Group C winner Panama and needed to eke out a 1-0 result over regional minnow Guadeloupe just to get the chance to face Group B winner Jamaica in Sunday’s quarterfinal. “Overall, it was more good than bad,” U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley said. “It’s all about taking it one game at a time and after three games putting yourself in a position to be in a quarterfinal. We’ve done that, we’ve learned from some things along the way, and we feel like we’re stronger.” By contrast, Jamaica won all

In order for the U.S. to advance to the semifinals, it will need to counter with an organized defensive effort while being more efficient in the attacking end. Against Guadeloupe, the U.S. failed on several scoring chances. “Certainly, we’ve created many chances, and I don’t think our finishing has been as sharp as it can be, but, hopefully, that’s coming up,” coach Bob Bradley said. When the Patriots broke the mold and ran onto the Super Bowl field en masse, it was cool. When the Red Sox snapped their curse dating back to 1918, it was amazing. When Kevin Garnett went a little nuts after winning the NBA title, it was a bit odd but fine. When Tim Thomas and the Bruins hoisted the Stanley Cup (for the 8o CWjj first time in 39 years, Im[died no less) Wednesday night, it had gotten a bit old. Enough with Boston winning championships already. It’s not like seven pro sports titles in this young century have done away with Bostonians’ gloom-and-doom outlook. Even when Washington hosts a major championship, such as the Frozen Four in 2009, it’s Boston University that wins the crown. D.C. stinks at sports and has stunk for some time. Sorry, Caps — you get thrown into that mix, too, after twostraight playoff flops. Having grown up in Bethesda, I’m used to locals’ being jealous of New York — for its culture, its food and its subway. Boston, on the other hand, was a place Washingtonians liked — we go to college there, and there’s the chowder and the Green Monster. But it’s over; the green-eyed monster all of these titles have produced has ensured that. To reach Matt Swenson, e-mail matt.swenson@readexpress.com

Manolo says, ayyyy! Hotlanta in July! Fiddle-dee-dee and thank goodness for the invention of the airconditioning! And now the Manolo must admit that despite his many visits to the Atlanta, he does not fully understand
this city. On the one of the hands, Atlanta seems as Southern as Southern can be, at every turn celebrating it’s historic Southern heritage with as much enthusiasm as any place in America. Indeed, it is difficult to escape from the club of “Gone With the Wind” Southernness with which the city attempts to beat the unsuspecting visitor over the head. And yet, on the other of the hands, whenever the Manolo visits Atlanta he seems to encounter only the transplanted Yankees and their progeny. “We moved here from Boston in ’92, y’all” said the lady in Lennox Square Mall. “My brotha came down in ’94.” And yet, on the third of the hands, Atlanta is indisputably the worldclass city of entertainment and business, the home of Coca-Cola, CNN and Elton John. It is all so confusing. Look! Here is the Whirl from Stuart Weitzman ($191, Zappos.com), the sandal in the oyster color that will allow your dress to shine in the Hotlanta sun. But the third-string DC Comics character has nonetheless been selected to hold the super-being turf at the world’s megaplexes for a few weeks. And while “Green Lantern” is capable of doing that, it’s neither amusing nor exciting enough to ensure a long-running franchise. Though based on a 2004-05 update of the 1940s hero, the film’s premise remains musty: Earth’s Lantern is one of thousands of intergalactic cops who wear magic rings that draw their juice from “the emerald energy of willpower.” The latest contender for emer-

They argue FW][#A_hXo with umpires and curse under their breath when they hit into double plays. They are who I want to be when I grow up. Which is why I enjoyed “Age of Champions,” a documentary showing Saturday and Sunday at the AFI Silver as part of Silverdocs. It follows several Senior Olympians, including D.C.’s Tatum brothers, above, one of whom kept swimming while getting chemo; a 100-year-old tennis player; and, best of all, a women’s basketball team from Louisiana whose members get manicures before body-checking their opponents. When one of the basketball players comes off the court with a dislocated shoulder, crying in anger and pain in the last few seconds of the championship game, you realize this isn’t “Cocoon.” Same when you watch a pole-vaulter who looks like he should be doing nothing more strenuous than clipping his nose hair. The film opens with the death of Hal (Christopher Plummer), who, as his son Oliver (Ewan McGregor) explains in a voice-over, came out of the closet with a flamboyant vengeance after his longtime wife died, taking a younger lover and diving into Southern California gay culture. Jumping around in time — from flashbacks of growing up in a house where so much went unspoken to his fa-

ther’s coming out to just before his death — the movie focuses on Oliver’s efforts to untangle how his parents’ marriage informed his own fears of commitment. A.H. BRIDESMAIDS (R, 125 minutes) Kristen Wiig plants a bawdy, brave and brashly feminist flag in the male-dominated raunch-com genre with “Bridesmaids.” Wiig plays Annie, a would-be cupcake entrepreneur whose business has taken it in the ganache with the economic downturn and whose love life consists of impromptu booty calls from her loathsomely narcissistic sex buddy, Ted (Jon Hamm). When Annie learns that her lifelong best friend, Lillian, is engaged — and that Annie is to be the maid of honor — the new reality sends her into a tailspin of envy, grief and self-loathing. But when it turns out that Lillian’s bridal party will also include the rich, thin, impossibly appropriate Helen Harris III (Rose
“not bad” yet somewhat south of “hilarious”). The laughs — many of which have to do with a chronically f latulent penguin named Stinky; the production of plentiful amounts of penguin poop; and a character named Pippi (Ophelia Lovibond), whose entire dialogue revolves around words beginning with the letter P — come at frequent and reliable intervals. Carrey is responsible for most
of them. But then again, he’s also something of an acquired taste. Playing a slick Manhattan real estate developer who reluctantly comes into possession of six Gentoo penguins, the actor uses his gift for physical comedy and funny voices to propel this gentle comedy forward toward its sweet if slightly familiar message about the importance of family over career advancement. A divorced dad who shares cus-

There’s a reason Mr. Popper gets top billing over the penguins in “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” (It could just as easily, and just as alliteratively, have been called “The Penguins of Mr. Popper,” after all.) It isn’t merely the fact that that’s how authors Richard and Florence Atwater titled their 1938 book, on which the movie is very, very loosely based. It’s because Jim Carrey, as the titular Thomas Popper, steals the show from his avian co-stars, a flock of CGI penguins who are strenuously adorable in the way that only CGI penguins can be. Carrey, who is something of a CGI peacock himself, is the best thing about the film, which should delight young audiences even as it diverts their adult handlers. The movie is the very dictionary definition of “cute” (which, as a formal classification, places it just above
Ewan McGregor, left, stars with Mélanie Laurent in director Mike Mills’ “Beginners.” Byrne), Annie’s insecurities metastasize into a florid case of overpowering Id. A.H. THE HANGOVER: PART II (R, 102 minutes) A veritable textbook case of what not to do when re-making a comedy that
depended on sheer surprise for most of its appeal, “The Hangover Part II” also inadvertently points out the weaknesses of the first movie. In “Part II,” director Todd Phillips follows the first movie
beat for beat, switching a character and location here and there but never straying far from the original template. The movie opens with Bradley Cooper’s Phil — scruffy, sweaty, red-eyed — dolefully calling Tracy, the impending bride from the first movie, to tell her that, once again, “We [screwed] up.” By “we,” of course, he means Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Stu (Ed Helms), who is about to be married in Thailand. Once the posse lands in Thailand, “just one beer” two nights before the wedding turns into a similar bender, with the three principals awaking in a Bangkok hotel room with a monkey in a Rolling Stones vest and no memory of how they got there. the panda (voice of Jack Black) returns in pursuit of inner peace, the defeat of a murderous peacock (Gary Oldman) and the truth about what happened to his real parents. What? You didn’t actually think

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13, 94 minutes) From its rapturous opening sequence,
“Midnight in Paris” announces that Woody Allen has returned to at least one of his most beloved forms. “Midnight in Paris” finds Allen in a larky, slightly tart and altogether bountiful mood. Owen Wilson plays Gil, a screenwriter and would-be serious author who’s visiting Paris with his fiancee, Inez (Rachel McAdams), and her parents. Gil is besotted with the Paris of the 1920s, when his heroes F.
Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway traded dry martinis and even drier barbs with the likes of Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso. Inez and her family, on the other hand, couldn’t care less. The mood is doubly spoiled when they bump into Paul (Michael Sheen), an old college crush of Inez’s, now an incorrigible pedant. A.H. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (PG-13, 128 minutes)

“On Stranger Tides” feels as fresh and bracingly exhilarating as the day Jack Sparrow first swashed his buckle, infusing new reckless energy into a franchise that shows no signs of furling its sails. Anchored by playful androgynous Johnny Depp as the ever-cheeky Captain Jack, “On Stranger Tides” marks the return of stock “Pirates” players Geoffrey Rush (as Hector Barbossa) and Kevin R. McNally as friend and confederate Joshamee Gibbs. And it welcomes two new characters to the fold who slip into its fanciful, sometimes gently ribald world with uncanny ease: Ian McShane delivers a ruthless turn as the notorious Blackbeard. And Penelope Cruz delivers an appropriately smoldering turn as a mysterious pirate named Angelica, whose storied past with Jack becomes clear in a few neat expository strokes. A.H. SUPER 8 (R, 118 minutes) In “Super 8,” a chubby would-be director named Charles (Riley Griffiths) keeps running around his small Ohio hometown, framing its culde-sacs and tract homes with his hands and calling for “more production value.” Charles is shooting his own zombie movie, and he has commandeered his adolescent friends to work on his cast and crew. The scenes of Charles’ movie-within-a-movie turn out to be the best parts of “Super 8.” While Charles and his team are filming, they inadvertently record a horrific accident that ends up drawing the attention of the U.S. Air Force. Charles’ special-effects guy, Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney), is convinced that something is afoot, between the mysterious military ops, an electrical grid gone haywire and an epidemic of missing dogs. A.H. THE TREE OF LIFE (PG-13, 138 minutes) The sprawling story of a man’s quest to reconcile a contradictory parental legacy, “The Tree of Life” ties that search to more metaphysical questions having to do with God, creation, truth and beauty. As a character named Mr. O’Brien, Brad Pitt plays the patriarch of the 1950s family that lives in a leafy Texas suburb. A hardjawed, embittered martinet, Mr. O’Brien brings up his three boys with a toxic combination of intimidation and commanding affection. Less a narrative than a series of sharp shards of memory, the next segment of “The Tree of Life” traces his life with Father, whose mercurial, fearsome force Jack fuses with God’s power at its most fickle and inscrutable. A.H. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (PG-13, 131 minutes) “First Class” begins, like the comic book series itself, in 1944. That’s when a
Joel Courtney is part of the crew filming the movie-within-a movie in “Super 8.” young German boy named Erik Lehnsherr watches his parents being hauled off to Auschwitz. In a fit of fear and rage, he bends the metal gate separating him from his family, commanding the attention of a scientist eager to harness young Erik’s telekinetic powers. Twenty years later, the grown Erik (Michael Fassbender) contemplates his revenge against the man who went on to ruin his life and
who now goes by the name of Sebastian Shaw. Meanwhile, the genially telepathic Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) is earning his doctorate in genetic research at Oxford, with his shape-shifting friend and surrogate sister, Raven, by his side. A.H.

Be Prepared We had no idea “Troop Beverly Hills,” the 1989 film about a socialite (Shelley Long, left) who takes on a troop of Wilderness Girls (read: Girl Scouts), had became the Valley Girl “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” If you’re up for the outing, Sixth & I will host “Troop Beverly Hills: The Experience” Saturday. Come in costume, dance and yell at the screen — just don’t toss your cookies. Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, 600 I St. NW; Sat., 7:30 p.m., $12; 202-408-3100, Sixthandi. org. (Gallery Place)

Famous dobroist and steel guitarist Dave Giegerich passed away at the end of last year, and local musicians including the Hula Monsters, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer and Bill Kirchen will gather this weekend for a concert that benefits his family. We don’t have any jokes, just admiration for the way the music community comes together when somebody needs it. Birchmere, 3701 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria; Sun., 7:30 p.m., $25; 703-549-7500, Birchmere.com.
We’re not sure why Westend Bistro has decided to honor veterans on Father’s Day weekend — there are lots of moms in the armed forces, too! — but anytime anyone wants to honor veterans, we stand and salute. The restaurant will host an afternoon of barbecue (served from the Carnivore barbecue food truck) and cupcakes (from the Cupcake Buggy), with all net proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project. Westend Bistro, 1190 22nd St. NW; Fri., 11:30 a.m., free; 202974-4900, Westendbistrodc.com. (Foggy Bottom)

IY_#<_ These days, Noah Wyle occupies a world devastated by alien invaders. On his new TNT sci-fi series “Falling Skies,” he plays Tom Mason, a Boston University history professor and father of three sons whose wife was killed and whose son taken captive in the alien attack. Tom is second-in-command of a ragtag regiment of survivors in a ravaged Boston suburb. The odds against them seem insurmountable. But they are fighting back. On “Falling Skies,” there are threats aplenty from the mysterious, multi-legged aliens and the robots they sic on the Earthlings.

Noah Wyle, center, helps lead the survivors of an alien attack in “Falling Skies.”
“But there are larger themes,” Wyle says. “Beyond surviving, the human characters will need to create the template for the next civilization, which probably won’t even be realized in their own lifetimes.” In short, Tom is a history professor helping create new history

End of an Era? There’s a bittersweet edge to “The 38th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” (Sun., 8 p.m., CBS), given the recent announcement that two fixtures of daytime television — “All My Children” and “One Life to Live’’ — are leaving the airwaves soon. “AMC’’ is well represented in the nominations, however, with three actors up for honors — including Debbi Morgan, shown — and the show itself a contender for outstanding drama series. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You are confident that what happens will be memorable, but will it be remembered in a good or bad way? You can influence this just a bit. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You must hone your skills just a bit more before you begin reaping the rewards you most anticipate. Your ability to read people can prove to be your most productive trait.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
