Three teens in a program for potential future officers stole three L.A. police vehicles and went on patrol around the city before leading authorities on wild pursuits that ended with crashes last week, police said. The two boys and a girl ages 15, 16 and 17 “gamed the system,” Chief Charlie Beck said, using a vacationing sergeant’s name to sign out stun guns and radios and drive the cars from a police lot. All three were arrested. (AP)

He says he tied the clock to a string in 2004 and lowered it into the wall through a vent, hoping the noise would help him drill a hole in the right spot for a TV cable. But the battery-operated clock fell off the string and has stayed beyond reach in the wall. And the battery still hasn’t died. (AP)

Chesapeake has new guests ENVIRONMENT Maryland Natural Resources Police Sgt. John Buchanan was flying biologists over Tangier Sound this spring to survey ducks when he saw four pods of dolphins. He counted almost 50 in the lower Chesapeake Bay. “One of the largest groups that I’ve seen,” Buchanan said. “Over the last few years it’s not uncommon to see them.” Now researchers in Maryland and Virginia are undertaking the first comprehensive studies of bottlenose dolphins in the Chesapeake Bay. Their early findings suggest more dolphins are swimming up into the bay than previously believed. They have been spotted as far north as

release this month of a new cellphone app that will enable bay users to report dolphin sightings. Her DolphinWatch app will mark locations, dates and times of sightings and plot them on a map of the bay. Bailey plans to use the data to determine where to deploy

3 arrested in murders of 2 students MONTGOMERY COUNTY Two Maryland teenagers gunned down on the eve of their high school graduation were lured to a dark cul-de-sac by three men who feigned interest in buying an extra commencement ticket — a scheme motivated by anger over an earlier, botched drug deal, Montgomery County police said in arrest records filed Saturday as the suspects were charged with murder. The gunmen’s target appears to have been Shadi Najjar, 17, who along with his friend Artem Ziberov, 18, planned to sell at least one ticket the night of June 5 after pulling over along Gallery Court about 20 miles north of Washington. Instead, they were met by a barrage of at least 30 rounds fired from two or more guns. Najjar, behind the wheel, was hit by four rounds, according to police accounts. Ziberov, in the passenger seat, was hit by 10. The Honda they sat in was still running with its lights on when police, who had been called for reports of gunfire, found the

teens. The attackers took Najjar’s phone, police said. Ziberov may have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time, according to police accounts Saturday. It wasn’t clear whether he was aware of what police described as a previous soured drug buy involving Najjar and a girlfriend of one of the attackers that appears
to have festered as resentment for months before bec ome brutal retaliation in June. Court reGarcia-Gaona cords identified the suspects as Jose CanalesYanez, 25; Edgar Garcia-Gaona, 24; and his brother Roger Garcia, 19, all of Montgomery County. Each has been charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. The men are expected to make their first court appearances today, and online court records do not

indicate whether any of them have retained an attorney. Detectives learned that Najjar robbed Canales-Yanez’s girlfriend. She filed a Dec. 14 police report saying she had been robbed by someone in a blue Honda Civic who dragged her body 50 feet and stole her iPad. The detectives also wrote that they had recently spoken with at least one other person who told them that Najjar had stolen drugs from the woman. A source, whose name detectives kept confidential in court documents, helped tie the case together. They revealed that Canales-Yanez, Garcia-Gaona and Garcia targeted Najjar “in retaliation” for his robbing Canales-Yanez’s girlfriend. William Tewelow, the stepfather of Ziberov, said the arrests were part of the mix of emotions his family has been coping with. He said the action “speaks to quality of the police” working the case. Tewelow tried to take comfort in his stepson somehow knowing about the arrests. “He wanted these killers caught and brought to justice,” Tewelow said. “Now he can rest properly.” DAN MORSE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local MARYLAND MGM National Harbor has helped boost the state’s overall gaming revenue since it opened Dec. 8, but the newcomer appears to be eating into the profits of Maryland’s other top casinos. Monthly casino revenue rose an average of 37.8 percent in Maryland since MGM began operating, according to the state Lottery and Gaming Control Agency’s year-to-year comparisons. The industry, which sends some of its profits to fund schools and other public programs, set its
record in the state by generating $141 million in March. But monthly revenue for Maryland’s five other casinos has dropped an average of 11.8 percent since December, largely driven by dips of 9.4 percent for Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore and 16.6 percent for Maryland Live in Anne Arundel County — the two gaming facilities closest to MGM. Casino officials and elected leaders say they are not alarmed by the numbers, which fall roughly in line with the projections made by state consultants
after Maryland voters legalized table games and approved the addition of a sixth casino in a 2012 referendum. “These people are still raking in money, just less than they would have otherwise,” said Del. Eric G. Luedtke (D-Montgomery), who co-chairs the state legislature’s gaming-oversight committee. Maryland Live generated $46 million from slots and table games in May, while Horseshoe pulled in $24 million. MGM pulled in about $51 million. JOSH HICKS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. delegate asks Congress to approve park investment
A noose was found Saturday on the Mall, at least the third in that area in recent weeks. The noose was hanging from a lamppost near the National Gallery of Art, said Sgt. Anna Rose, spokeswoman for the U.S. Park Police. She said it was found about 3 p.m. near Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The site is near the gallery’s East Building. One noose was found in a tree May 26 near the Hirshhorn Museum, and another was found May 31 inside the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The Park Police are investigating, Rose said.
Police found remains on Sunday believed to be those of a missing teenager who they say was assaulted and went missing overnight after leaving a religious institution in the Sterling area. The institution is the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, according to several members of the mosque, but neither the mosque nor police could confirm that detail. Police said the remains were found about 3 p.m. in a pond in the 21500 block of Ridegtop Circle in Sterling. The girl was believed to have gone missing around 4 a.m. Sunday after an altercation with a motorist in the area. A man who is the subject of the investigation is in custody. (TWP)

Congress has to approve the deal so the city can enter into a cooperative management agreement with the Park Service, which controls the park. (TWP)

‘Traumatic’ collision almost sinks destroyer

Doctors doubt health claims for coconut oil
YOKOSUKA, JAPAN A U.S. Navy destroyer came close to sinking after a “traumatic” collision off the coast of Japan, the commander of the 7th Fleet said Sunday, after the bodies of seven missing sailors were found in the berthing compartments of the stricken vessel. Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin declined to say how many of the missing sailors had been recovered because the families of those who died were still being informed Sunday. But he said the search-and-rescue mission was over, and the Navy Times reported that the bodies of all seven sailors had been found in the ship’s flooded compartments. U.S. and Japanese investigations are underway to determine how a technologically advanced U.S. warship was not able to get out of the way of the huge and cumbersome container ship, even if it had right of way. “This was a severe emergency,” Aucoin said Sunday at the Yokosuka naval base, home of the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet. “The damage was significant. This was not a small collision.” Most of the damage occurred under the waterline in the form of a huge gash to the hull near the ship’s keel, which led to a “tremendous” amount of water

rushing into two berthing cabins, including sleeping quarters, and a machinery room, he said. “They had to fight this ship to keep it above the surface. It was traumatic,” he added. The crew eventually stopped the ship from foundering or sinking and got it back to port, he said. The collision occurred about 2:20 a.m. local time Saturday, when the Navy said most of the 300 sailors on board would have been sleeping, about 50 miles southwest of the U.S. Navy base. Marine tracking data showed the container ship, the Philippineflagged ACX Crystal, which was sailing from the port of Nagoya to Tokyo, performed a sudden 180-degree turn in the busy shipping lane south of Yokosuka and doubled back along its path

shortly before the crash. The weather was clear at the time. The Crystal is nearly four times the size of the Fitzgerald, and photos showed scrapes to the port side of its bow. The Crystal is operated by Nippon Yusen K.K., a Japanese shipping company, and all 20 crew members were reported unharmed. Cmdr. Bryce Benson, whose office was destroyed, was airlifted from the ship’s deck after daybreak Saturday to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka with a head injury. Two other crew members suffered cuts and bruises and were flown out by helicopter. The remains of the recovered sailors had also been taken to the hospital for identification.

The American Heart Association’s Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease advisory said that 82 percent of the fat in coconut oil is saturated, far beyond butter (63 percent), beef fat (50 percent) and pork lard (39 percent), USA Today reports. The group reviewed data on saturated fat, concluding that seven out of seven existing controlled studies showed coconut oil increased LDL — or “bad” — cholesterol. Frank Sacks, the report’s lead author, said he is unsure who is pushing the narrative that coconut oil is healthy, but that past weight loss studies might be to blame. (EXPRESS)

Prosecutor intends to try Cosby again NORRISTOWN, PA. Bill Cosby declared victory on Father’s Day weekend after a jury deliberated 52 hours without reaching consensus on charges that he drugged and molested a woman in 2004. No one from Cosby’s real or TV families was in court Saturday when the case ended in a mistrial. Instead, Cosby emerged from the courthouse with his publicity team, which read a statement from his wife that accused the judge likely to retry him of arrogance and collusion with prosecutors. District Attorney Kevin Steele vowed to try Cosby, 79, a second time, saying accuser Andrea Constand supported the decision. “She has shown such courage through this, and we are in awe of what she has done,” Steele said. “She’s entitled to a verdict in this case.” Cosby’s team declared victory, however temporary. By sowing doubt among one or more jurors, Cosby’s lawyers managed to overcome two years of unrelenting bad publicity for their client after the
public release of his damaging testimony about drugs and sex, as well as a barrage of accusations from 60 women who came forward to accuse him of sexual assault. Constand, now 44, told jurors Cosby gave her pills that made her woozy and then penetrated her with his fingers as she lay paralyzed on a couch, unable to tell him to stop. The 2004 encounter at Cosby’s suburban Philadelphia estate was the only one to result in criminal charges. Constand, who worked at Cosby’s alma mater, Temple University, is ready to go to trial again. “She’s a very spiritual woman, she believes things happen for a purpose, and I think the purpose is ... it should encourage other women to come forward and have their day in court,” said her lawyer, Dolores Troiani. Troiani acknowledged the difficulty of the case, given the passage of time and the impact of the alleged drugging on Constand’s ability to recall details. The jury failed to reach a unanimous decision on any of the three counts against Cosby, ending the trial without a verdict. Cosby’s team immediately went on the attack. prosecutors for bringing the case to court, calling Steele “heinously and exploitively ambitious.” She also criticized the judge, the accuser’s lawyers and the media. “How do I describe the judge? Overtly arrogant, collaborating with the district attorney,” Camille Cosby said in her statement. Bill Cosby didn’t comment. The jurors clearly struggled with their verdict, telling Judge Steven O’Neill on Thursday they were at an impasse. He instructed them to keep working toward a unanimous decision. They came back Saturday and told the judge they were hopelessly deadlocked. Former federal prosecutor
David Weinstein said Cosby’s celebrity and beloved roles almost certainly played a role in the jury’s deliberations, perhaps to convince “two or three jurors that it’s impossible to convict Dr. Huxtable, to convict Fat Albert ... that he couldn’t have done this horrible thing.” Cosby’s civil lawyers are still fighting lawsuits against him by 10 women. Currently, seven women have defamation suits pending in Massachusetts. Three more have defamation or sexual battery suits pending in California. Cosby has denied any wrongdoing. But a new expedition discovered many “wonderfully weird and frightening sea creatures,” the International Business Times reported Sunday. For example, the red coffinfish, left, could be a new species. Scientists also found a “faceless fish” whose last known sighting was in 1873. HEALTH Twice in a week, Lois Wood woke to find ticks crawling on her leg in her rural New Hampshire home. A few nights later, she spotted a mouse running across her bed. She said she has encountered these little creatures outside, but has “never experienced anything like this in my own bed.” Wood’s experiences coincide with warming temperatures. The past three years have been the planet’s hottest on record. This changing climate allows many pests to thrive. Deer ticks feed on the mice, then can transmit Lyme disease to humans. Peggy Siligato, co-owner of Narragansett Pest Control in Rhode Island, has seen more mice over the past five years than during the rest of her 40-year career. She does add that “West Nile virus has killed many birds of prey along the East Coast, meaning there are more mice. To say it’s just climate change isn’t exactly accurate, but it’s probably a part of the story.” It’s not just a rural problem. Leo Galland, an internist practicing in New York City, said he has treated three patients “with acute Lyme who hadn’t left New York City, but they had each spent time in Riverside Park.” The New York City health department website warns that blacklegged (deer) ticks have been collected in four of the city’s five boroughs. Democrats see chance on Tuesday to flip seat in House held by GOP GEORGIA With a potential price tag exceeding $50 million, the most expensive House race in U.S. history — pitting Republican Karen Handel against Democrat Jon Ossoff — has become a proxy for the nation’s political divides, offering another early test for President Trump and the GOP’s current monopoly in Washington. And Tuesday’s election gives
Democrats a chance to prove they can flip at least 24 GOPheld seats and reclaim a House majority in the 2018 midterms. Both campaigns agree it will be a close race, despite Republicans holding the seat since 1979. The seat opened in February when Tom Price resigned to become Trump’s health and human service secretary. Ossoff, who led April’s first round but fell shy of outright victory, insisted that “this is about the folks right here in Georgia.” Handel, 55, said it’s about choosing her record as Georgia

About a dozen crew members for each leg of the voyage relied only on their understanding of nature’s cues — ocean swells, stars, wind, birds— and their own naau, or gut, to sail across about 40,000 nautical miles to 19 countries, spreading a message of caring for the Earth. Macron’s party on course for large majority FRANCE French voters gave President Emmanuel Macron’s upstart party a solid victory in Sunday’s parliamentary election, handing the centrist a strong mandate to reshape French politics. Polling projections suggested Macron’s Republic on the Move! party could take 355 to 365 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly. That’s more than the 289 seats needed for a simple majority to carry out his program. With 82 percent of the vote counted, the Interior Ministry said Macron’s party had 42 percent of the vote, the conservative Republicans had 22 percent and the far-right National Front had 10 percent. The Socialists, who ruled the nation before Macron’s independent presidential victory in May, took 6 percent. Although the result was expected after an earlier round of voting last week, the rise of Macron’s pro-Europe, probusiness party represented a watershed moment in modern French politics. In a system that has only been governed by the center-left or the center-right, Sunday’s vote marked the beginning of a French “third way.” Far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen registered a massive victory in her bastion of Henin-Beaumont, defeating Macron’s candidate as she won her first French parliamentary seat. Le Pen said she would fight Macron’s policies. ELAINE GANLEY AND SYLVIE CORBET (AP)

Plenty of job openings Ongoing investigation, Trump’s volatility have White House struggling to fill vacant positions
Lawyer insists Trump isn’t being probed
SEAN GALLUP (GETTY IMAGES)
POLITICS The array of legal and political threats hanging over the Trump presidency has compounded the White House’s struggles to fill out the top ranks of the government. Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey last month and the escalating probe into Russian interference in the presidential election have made hiring even more difficult, say former federal officials, party activists, lobbyists and candidates whom Trump officials have tried to recruit. Republicans say they are turning down job offers to work for a chief executive whose volatile temperament makes them nervous. They are asking head hunters if their reputations could suffer permanent damage, according to 27 people The Washington Post interviewed to assess what is becoming a debilitating factor in recruiting political appointees. The hiring challenge complicates the already slow pace at which Trump is filling senior leadership jobs across government. The White House disputed the notion that the administration has a hiring problem and noted that its candidates must be vetted by the FBI and the Office of Government Ethics before being announced publicly, which might contribute to the perception that there is a delay in filling key posts. “I have people knocking down my door to talk to the presidential personnel office,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said. The White House picked up the hiring pace in May and the first half of June, particularly for positions needing confirmation. It has advanced 92 candidates for Senate confirmation, compared

with 59 between Trump’s inauguration and the end of April. But the Senate has just 25 working days until it breaks for the August recess. At this point, Trump has 43 confirmed appointees to senior posts, compared with the 151 top political appointees confirmed by mid-June in President Barack Obama’s first term and the 130 under President George W. Bush, according to data tracked by The Post and the nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service’s Center for Presidential Transition. For Cabinet posts, the median wait between nomination and Senate vote for Trump was 25 days, according to data collected by The Post. By contrast, Obama’s nominees faced a median wait of two days, George W. Bush had a median wait of zero days and Bill Clinton had a median wait of one day. A White House official said about 200 people are being vetted for senior-level posts.
Republicans frustrated Republicans have become so alarmed by the personnel shortfall that in the past week a coalition of conservatives complained to White House chief of staff Reince Priebus. “We remain very concerned over the lack of secondary and tertiary executive-level appointments,” they said in a letter signed by 25 conservatives called the Coalitions for America, describing their concern that the leadership vacuum will create “mischief and malfeasance” by civil servants loyal to Obama. (TWP)
Potential candidates are watching Trump’s behavior and monitoring his treatment of senior officials. “Trump is becoming radioactive, and it’s accelerating,” said Bill Valdez, a former senior Energy Department official who is now president of the Senior Executives Association, which represents 6,000 top federal leaders.
Israel revokes Ramadan entry permits of 200,000 Palestinians after Palestinian attacks on police
“He just threw Jeff Sessions under the bus,” Valdez said, referring to recent reports that the president is furious at the attorney general for recusing himself from the Russia investigation. “If you’re working with a boss who doesn’t have your back, you have no confidence in working with that individual.” Although Trump has blamed Senate Democrats for blocking his nominees, the personnel situation has many causes. After Trump’s November victory, hiring got off to a slow start during the transition, and some important positions have run into screening delays as names pass through several White House aides who must give approval. In a town where the long hours and financial sacrifice of working in government are outweighed by the prestige of a White House or agency job, the sacrifice is beginning to look less appealing. LISA REIN AND ABBY PHILLIP (THE WASHINGTON POST)
POLITICS A member of President Trump’s legal team, in combative Sunday TV interviews, repeatedly insisted that Trump is not under investigation for obstruction of justice but acknowledged he could not know for certain. “Let me be very clear here, as it has been since the beginning, the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction,” lawyer Jay Sekulow said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” That assessment, repeated on other broadcasts, was at odds with a Washington Post report last week and seemingly with a tweet by Trump himself on Friday. During a later appearance on “Fox News Sunday,“ Sekulow conceded that he could not say with absolute certainty that Trump is not being investigated because he cannot read the mind of special counsel Robert Mueller. The Post reported last week that Mueller, who was appointed to oversee the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election, is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that includes an examination of whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice. On Twitter on Friday, Trump wrote as part of a tweet about the probe, “I am being investigated.” On Sunday, Sekulow said Trump was not confirming that he is being investigated, despite having written those words. DeGrom goes deep against Nats METS 5, NATIONALS 1 The Nationals knew the stiffest test of their four-game series in New York awaited them Sunday. It stood a lanky 6-foot-4 with a long, flowing mane under a powder blue Mets Father’s Day cap, and it was why Nationals manager Dusty Baker said taking the first three games of the series was so important. Jacob deGrom stood in the way of a Nationals sweep, and he did not budge. The right-hander muzzled Washington over eight brilliant innings as the Nationals took a 5-1 loss, their first in seven games at Citi Field this season. The Nationals (42-27) scored an unearned run four batters into the game on Ryan Zimmerman’s sacrifice fly, but that was all they could collect against deGrom. Trea Turner had a hit, a walk
and set a Nationals record with four steals, but the rest of Washington’s offense had just three hits and a walk. Just once after the first inning did deGrom pitch with multiple runners on base. He ended his day after tossing 105 pitches and slugging his first career home run, in the third. He outlasted Joe Ross, who battled the Mets (31-37) and a couple of bad breaks for six innings. Ross’ inconsistency has emerged as one of the Nats’ few worries outside of their bullpen. His outings have vacillated between gems and debacles. The Nationals believe the extreme variation stems from a shifting arm slot, which would produce a flattened slider and limit his endurance. It’s the difference between Ross being lights-out and throwing batting practice. A flat slider presents a significant problem for Ross because he relies heavily on just two pitches — the slider and sinker — with

College World Series games had plenty of drama as the eightteam field began play this weekend. Here are three of the players who came through for their teams in Omaha.
Nationals starter Joe Ross, who has struggled with a flat slider this year, watches Jacob deGrom trot around the bases after a third-inning homer.
Kelley out with strain The Nationals on Sunday placed reliever Shawn Kelley on the 10-day disabled list with a right trapezius strain and recalled A.J. Cole from Class AAA Syracuse to take his spot on the roster. Kelley said he began feeling tightness around his neck in New York on Friday, when he gave up a leadoff homer to Jay Bruce. J.C.
the change-up a distant third in his arsenal. The limited repertoire grants him little margin for error. An in-between Ross appeared Sunday, when he allowed nine hits and four runs,
two unearned. He was sharp through the fifth inning, but the Mets scored twice in the fourth: Matt Wieters dropped a ball on a tag at the plate, and Michael Conforto’s hard-hit grounder bounced off Anthony Rendon’s glove, letting T.J. Rivera score. Ross’ command slipped in the sixth as he served up pitches over the plate and allowed another run. Still, it was not a failed weekend for the Nationals. With their division lead back over 10 games, they headed to LaGuardia Airport to catch a charter flight to Miami for three games against another middling division foe.
He went 3-for-3 and drove in the tying run with a single in the sixth inning of the Beavers’ 6-5 win Saturday over Cal State Fullerton.

P-Nats’ owner: Help fund new stadium or else
The Potomac Nationals, the Class A affiliate for Washington, are seeking help from Prince William County to build a $35 million stadium in Woodbridge, Va. Minor League Baseball told the team that aging Pfitzner Stadium isn’t up to standards, and it must find a new home by 2019. Owner Art Silber said if the county doesn’t fund upfront costs, he’ll have to sell the team, and it would relocate. The team wants to use public bonds and reimburse the county the full cost over the course of a 30-year lease. (TWP)

76ers angle for Fultz’s rights NBA DRAFT The Celtics have agreed in principle to trade the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft to the 76ers for Philadelphia’s No. 3 overall pick, plus a firstround pick in 2018 or 2019. David Aldridge of TNT and NBA. com first reported the news late Saturday, and it was confirmed by The Washington Post. The official announcement is expected today. If the Celtics go through with this, they’re taking a giant leap of faith. Boston is ready to move down two spots and acquire one of two picks owned by the 76ers — a protected 2018 first-round pick from the Lakers or a 2019 first-round pick from the Kings, depending on whether the protection criteria is met. The Celtics also have another unprotected pick coming next summer from the Nets as the final piece of the remarkable trade the two franchises made in 2013. The entire point of that deal dea

with the Nets was to try to give Boston, then entering a rebuilding phase, a chance to draft a franchise-changing player. By most accounts, Markelle Fultz — the presumptive No. 1 pick, by the Celtics or Sixers — is precisely that kind of player. Boston is thought to be
enamored with Kansas forward Josh Jackson, and he will likely be their pick. But while the Celtics aren’t alone in liking Jackson’s game, the heavy consensus is that Fultz, the 6-foot-4 guard who played high school ball at DeMatha in Hyattsville, Md., before going to Washington for
one season in college, is ahead of everyone in this class. For the 76ers, Fultz would be a perfect complement to two building blocks, Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, giving them a guard to go with a potential franchise cornerstone wing and big man. Assuming health — a big assumption, given Simmons missed all last season with a broken foot and Embiid has played 31 games in three seasons — Philadelphia looks like a rising power in the East. The Celtics emerged as the top seed in the conference last season and would now have even more assets to make a run at someone like Pacers star Paul George or, more likely, Bulls star Jimmy Butler, via trade next month after they attempt to sign someone like Jazz forward Gordon Hayward or Clippers forward Blake Griffin in free agency. But Fultz is the kind of player Ainge and Co. have been waiting for ever since the Nets handed over a half-decade of drafts for the aging trio of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry.
O Sunday, the NHL revealed the protection lists that every team submitted in advance of the On expansion draft, outlining the players exempt from being taken by the Golden Knights. Vegas will ex aannounce its team Wednesday. Here are five of the best options eligible to be chosen. (TWP/AP)

To save its top-two defense pairings, the Predators opted to protect eight skaters. That meant exposing Neal, a 23-goal scorer this season. Nashville also left forwards Pontus Aberg and Colton Sissons unprotected.
A four-time all-star and nine-time 20-goal scorer, Staal won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006. Dustin Brown of the Kings and the Canadiens’ Tomas Plekanec are other exposed forwards of note.
Anaheim did not protect either of its top two defensemen, Josh Manson and Vatanen. The latter won’t be ready for the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
He’s a restricted free agent but is expected to have a top-four role on Washington’s blue line next season. Young, puck-moving defensemen are assets in the NHL, so Schmidt, 25, could appeal to Vegas.

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported Sunday that All-Star forward Paul George told the Pacers he plans to become a free agent next summer and prefers to sign with the Lakers when that happens. SUMMER TV PREVIEW
Mark your calendar
‘The Gong Show’ 10 p.m. Thursday on ABC
This Will Arnett-produced revival of the talent show is hosted by Mike Meyers, in character as his British alter ego Tommy Maitland. The rotating panel of celebrity judges include Elizabeth Banks and Joel McHale.
Not only is summer a useful time to clean out your DVR, but it’s also an opportunity to guiltlessly graze TV’s junk-food aisles. Certain inane pleasures await when we stop treating TV like highbrow homework. That said, here are some summer assignments (no groaning!), as well as other guilty pleasures worth checking out between now and Labor Day. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
2 ‘The Mist’
HBO
HBO
10:30 p.m July 23 on HBO
Film director Nicholas Stoller (“Neighbors”) and wife Francesca Delbanco are behind this eightepisode dramedy about a group of six Ivy Leaguers (including Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Savage, Cobie Smulders and Nat Faxon) who remain friends in their complicated 40s. Precious, sure, but Key’s comedic timing saves some of the episodes.
Although it can be a bit rudderless since it eclipsed the novels, “Game of Thrones” is still one of the best shows of our time. There are only seven episodes in this penultimate season, so enjoy them while they last. As far as we’re concerned, the sooner Daenerys and Tyrion take care of Cersei, the better — but let’s hope they end up leaving something for Arya.
Issa Rae’s affecting portrait of a young social worker in Los Angeles and the up-and-down state of her friendships and love life ended its first season on an especially down note, when her character’s boyfriend dumped her after discovering she’d had an affair. But both Rae and HBO have been pretty tight-lipped about what happens next.
‘Somewhere Between’
‘What Would Diplo Do?’
‘First in Human’
‘Broad City’
10 p.m. July 24 on ABC
10 p.m. Aug. 3 on Viceland
As if media workers aren’t crazybusy enough these days, Paula Patton stars as Laura Price, a television news producer who has a frighteningly detailed vision that her 8-year-old daughter (Aria Birch) is going to be murdered. This 10-episode thriller follows along as Laura desperately tries to do her best to prevent the inevitable.
Viceland’s first attempt at a scripted show is a dramedy in which James Van Der Beek stars as a satirically egocentric version of Diplo, the world-famous DJ and record producer. Your skepticism is warranted, but know this: The TV industry exists mainly to find Van Der Beek the perfect comeback vehicle. It’s been going on for years now.
9 p.m. Aug. 10 on Discovery Channel
10:30 p.m. Aug. 23 on Comedy Central
This three-night docuseries, narrated by “Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons, takes viewers on an unprecedented trip inside the National Institutes of Health’s “Building 10” hospital complex, where chemotherapy was first used against cancer, lithium was tried for depression and — so long as federal funding lasts — research continues.
Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson’s surrealistic, hilarious twist on the “young women in the big city” trope is back for a fourth season. Delightfully weird and endearing, “Broad City” may not be a “Seinfeld”-size hit, but it has a “Seinfeld”-esque way of reflecting g this generation’s sharpest sense of humor.
Sleep apnea among causes of Carrie Fisher’s death, coroner revealed Friday
This series adaptation of Stephen King’s novella of the same title (previously adapted as a 2007 film) stars Frances Conroy, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Darren Pettie, Alyssa Sutherland and Morgan Spector.
3 ‘Glow’ Friday on Netflix
Produced by “Orange Is the New Black’s” Jenji Kohan, the ‘80s period comedy stars Alison Brie as a struggling actress who turns to Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.) for a chance at stardom. (EXPRESS) COMEDY CENTRAL

Sarah, super-polished and super-intense Rachel, earthy and brilliant Cosima, chatty suburbanite Alison and so many more. The clones talk amongst themselves, wrestle with each other, even give each other injections in the stomach. Maslany deservedly won an Emmy in 2016, although she didn’t do it alone: The credits for the show list an “acting double.” Now, Season 5 is upon us (10 p.m. Saturdays on BBC America) with the title “The Final Trip.” Yes, the show will end after this cycle. If you need to catch up with the clone crew, let’s review. At the start of this batch of

It was only five years ago that scrappy Sarah Manning saw a woman commit suicide by jumping in front of a subway — and that woman looked exactly like her. So of course she assumed the dead woman’s identity (I mean, wouldn’t you?), and “Orphan Black” was on its way. The TV series is a mystery wrapped in a Rubik’s Cube and then cloned 11 times. Because that is roughly how many clones Sarah turns out to have, all portrayed by the world’s greatest living actress, Tatiana Maslany. She’s raw-boned
10 episodes, Sarah and some of her clones are on an island where a 170-year-old man is leading a community of people who are participating in a scientific experiment to extend the human life span. Their community is called “Revival.” And they all live in yurts. As in seasons past, there is great suspense (like what was that … thing … that attacked Sarah in the woods?), droll dialogue (Alison’s idea of a curse is “poop on a stoop”), beautiful landscapes and eerie music. The show does appear to poke fun at its own inscrutability. An annoyingly perky woman from Revival tells Cosima: “You’re wondering who all these people are. You just want to know what’s going on.” I think she’s also talking to all of us befuddled viewers. And I am 100 percent on board with Cosima’s response: “Are you gonna tell me?”

“Whenever I would tell my dad that I was going to the bathroom he would reply, ‘Mention my name and you’ll get a good seat!’ #DadQuotes.” @JAYMCARTHUR1025, sharing a dad
joke on Twitter for Father’s Day. “My dad just told me he didn’t even want kids, he just wanted to be able to say dad jokes,” @emilyosborne_99 tweeted. Others shared the “most dad thing” they have done this year. “Called Budget to try and negotiate the ‘frankly — absolutely ridiculous’ $13/day car seat charge,” @BradfordPearson shared.
“So grateful and happy you had the courage and good taste to be yourself in the Oval Office. Congratulations on your award.”
“Come to Great-Granny’s birthday party, they said. It will be fun, they said ...” @REELOFTHE51ST, joking about Prince George, who looked less than thrilled in some of the photographs from the annual Trooping the Colour celebration. The event, which took place Saturday, is the official birthday celebration for Queen Elizabeth, even though the queen turned 91 in April. The royal family stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the Royal Air Force’s traditional flyover. “Prince George not overly impressed by the flyover for great-nan’s birthday,” @SteveJonesPA tweeted.
DENNIS MOFFITT, commenting on Nikos Giannopoulos’ viral
Facebook post of his official photo with President Trump. Giannopoulos won Rhode Island’s teacher of the year award, which earned him an invitation to the White House. He told The Washington Post that he wanted to dress the same way in Washington that he does around his students. Giannopoulos, who described himself as “openly queer,” said that Trump told him he had good style. “I was visibly queer in the Oval Office, and no one can take that away from me,” Giannopoulos said.
“Are there trained sharks? Like dog racing? Sharks can’t do butterfly, Phelps’ best event. Is Ryan Lochte the bait?” @JASONRUBIN91, asking the important
questions about the announcement that Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is going to race a great white shark, as part of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. Viewers will have to wait until July 23 to find out how this race is possible. “I’m more excited for Michael Phelps racing a great white shark than I am for the Mayweather-McGregor fight,” @DrGeneva1560 weighed in.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can expect to be approached by one or more people who are in need of counsel — and, perhaps, some handson assistance. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You don’t want to be thinking about the end of something before it even begins. Focus on what you have to do now. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A transformation of sorts may have you experimenting with new methods, despite the warnings of someone who has been in your shoes.
