Boys at a British high school have found a novel way around strict uniform rules banning shorts, as the country swelters through a heat wave. On Thursday, about 30 boys at Isca Academy in Exeter donned gray-and-white plaid skirts instead of the officially mandated gray slacks. The school’s head teacher, Aimee Mitchell, issued a written statement that did not mention the skirts, but pledged to revisit the uniform rules. (AP)

Wanted: Protest planners

that there really isn’t anything out there telling you things like how big of a stage you need and how you estimate crowd sizes,” said Sanders, 39. The group has about 15 core members and 800 people on its mailing list. At the March for Truth, it provided about 100 volunteers wearing red vests throughout the day. D.C. Local Ambassadors trained the volunteers in de-escalation techniques and crowd-control protocols. Eventually, they want to publish a guide on how to plan a protest in Washington that will help people navigate government agencies and other logistics. They meet weekly and say they are working on a few marches that are in the nascent planning stages, including one focused on health care. Most of the members said they have always been politically engaged but had little experience in activism before the Women’s March. No matter. Uhl said the volunteers have shown they can throw a wellorganized, legally sound protest. “It would have been a disaster without them,” he said.

THE DISTRICT Jordan Uhl was swamped. The idea he had floated on Twitter last month for a modest demonstration had transformed into the highly publicized March for Truth, and in weeks, thousands of people were expected to descend on the nation’s capital. His notion had become a fullfledged protest, and with it came logistics he had never considered: a stage, speakers, portable toilets, stage marshals, permits and more. He had no idea how to plan a demonstration, let alone pull off a major event like this. But, he said, he received a divine Facebook message from a little-known group called the D.C. Local Ambassadors that said it would plan the entire demonstration for him — for free. As more progressive activists emerge in Washington during the Trump presidency, D.C. Local Ambassadors was established to help novices plan their protests. The group, comprised of mostly women, all volunteers who live in the D.C. region,

supporters call them a part of history that should be preserved. Richmond’s five Confederate statues are prominent fixtures on Monument Avenue, a wide thoroughfare lined with churches and historic mansions considered by many to be one of the nation’s loveliest thoroughfares. Likenesses of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, President Jefferson Davis and oceanographer Matthew Maury are perched on large stone pedestals. Stoney, who is African-American, took office in December as the youngest mayor ever elected in Richmond. He said he’s personally insulted by the monuments and

TTR SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY

RICHMOND The towering Confederate monuments in Virginia’s capital city shouldn’t be taken down, but instead should be supplemented with historical context about why they were built, Richmond’s mayor said Thursday. “Whether we like it or not, they are part of our history of this city, and removal would never wash away that stain,” Mayor Levar Stoney said. Instead, a commission of historians, authors and community leaders will solicit public input and make suggestions about how to “set the historical record straight” on the monuments in the former capital of the Confederacy, he announced at a news conference. “Equal parts myth and deception, they were the ‘alternative facts’ of their time — a false narrative etched in stone and bronze more than 100 years ago — not only to lionize the architects and defenders of slavery, but to perpetuate the tyranny and terror of Jim Crow and reassert a new era of white supremacy,” the mayor said. Opponents say the monuments are offensive relics of the region’s racist past, while

wishes they had never been built. “I think we should consider what Monument Avenue would look like with a little more diversity,” he said. The city has made one such effort already: A statue of black tennis champion Arthur Ashe, a Richmond native, was added in 1996, provoking a nationally publicized and racially charged dispute. Its dedication drew white protesters, including one who raised a Confederate flag. The commission will hold public hearings and will consider adding new monuments, Stoney said. He suggested that commissioners might also consider adding explanatory signs, similar to those that now appear in national parks. SARAH RANKIN (AP)

Tropical Storm Cindy was downgraded to a tropical depression early Thursday, but it continued to draw huge amounts of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico into the southern U.S. Cindy’s remnant circulation and its moisture will get absorbed by a cold front marching toward the East Coast on Friday and Saturday, producing areas of heavy rain along the way. In the Washington area, models are projecting two rounds of rainfall associated with this system, the first early Friday and the second early Saturday. The second wave of rain, in particular, may be very heavy. Altogether, about 1 to 4 inches of rain is likely in the Washington region, ending before noon Saturday. (TWP)

Supreme Court upholds convictions in ’84 murder The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the murder convictions of seven men in a brutal 1984 killing in D.C. The justices, by a 6-2 vote, rejected the defendants’ claims that prosecutors withheld evidence that would have made a difference in the outcome of the men’s trial. ‘Pizzagate’ gunman gets 4 years THE DISTRICT The North Carolina man who commandeered a pizza restaurant at gunpoint in Northwest Washington to investigate a false internet rumor of a pedophile ring there was sentenced to four years in prison Thursday. Edgar Maddison Welch, 28, who apologized to his victims and residents in the nation’s capital last week in a court filing, asked for an 18-month sentence for charging into Comet Ping Pong last December carrying a fully loaded AR-15 military-style rifle and revolver as he sought to investigate a viral internet rumor known as “Pizzagate.”

In ruling, judge says Welch’s attack left real psychological damage

Edgar Maddison Welch, left, acknowledged as part of a guilty plea in March that he brought an AR-15 rifle, right, and a revolver to Comet Ping Pong.

Prosecutors had sought a 4½ -year prison term. During the sentencing hearing, assistant U.S. attorneys Demian S. Ahn held up the rifle used by Welch and told the judge it had been part of an “armed

invasion” and part of a campaign of “vicious harassment and unfounded rumors.” U.S. District Judge Kentanji B. Jackson said that while no one was injured when Welch fired his weapon inside Comet Ping Pong

The judge said Welch “forged ahead” with an “ill-conceived plot” even though others urged him to abandon it. If Welch believed children were being harmed, he should have notified law enforcement, the judge said.

Metro OKs event extensions Keeping service running late will cost organizers $100,000 per hour TRANSPORTATION Metro will extend service hours for up to 10 special events over the coming year, ending its freeze on any early openings or late closures in effect since the start of SafeTrack one year ago. In a memo distributed to event organizers last week, Metro Assistant General Manager Lynn Bowersox outlined the criteria under which requests for

extended service hours would be considered moving into the fiscal year that begins July 1. Only requests given with sufficient notice and that expect to draw large ridership numbers will be taken into account, Metro said. And such requests come with a price tag: The cost of service — including running trains on six lines and staffing 91 stations — must be paid by event organizers. The total: approximately $100,000 per hour. Riders and event officials criticized the agency for refusing to make accommodations

for major events, including last October’s playoffs appearance by the Nationals. “We have a shot of maybe going to the World Series, we have the All-Star Game coming in 2018, so I think Metro now has put itself in a good position,” Metro Board Chairman Jack Evans said Thursday. Beginning Sunday, the system will roll out fare hikes and will close at 11:30 p.m. weeknights and at 1 a.m. weekends. Under the new policy, special events can extend service hours to 1 a.m. on any day. RACHEL SIEGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Survey: Teens do it less, use contraception

Afghans carry an injured man after a suicide car bombing in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on Thursday.

Afghan leader decries latest Ramadan attack At least 29 were killed, 60 injured in bombing claimed by Taliban AFGHANISTAN A suicide car bomb exploded Thursday at a bank in Afghanistan’s Helmand province as Afghan troops and government workers waited to collect their pay, killing at least 29 people, officials said. Most of the casualties in the explosion near the bank in the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah were civilians, said provincial Gov. Hayatullah Hayat. At least 60 were wounded, he said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack at the Kabul Bank in the southern province, which has been the center of

bitter battles between the insurgents and security forces aided by NATO troops. The militants, believed to control nearly 80 percent of the province’s countryside, increasingly have been making a push into Lashkar Gah to try take the city. Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi said the bomb targeted Afghan security personnel collecting their salaries. He said no civilians were killed. But the provincial governor and police chief emphasized that most of the dead were civilians. Witnesses said children were among the wounded. The attacker struck as scores of people, including many Afghan soldiers and civil servants, waited outside the bank ahead of the Eidal-Fitr holiday, which follows the

holy month of Ramadan, expected to end this weekend. President Ashraf Ghani assailed the attackers as “enemies of humanity.” He said the relentless assaults in Afghanistan are particularly offensive during Ramadan, when the faithful seek forgiveness for their wrongdoing: “These brutal terrorist attacks ... prove that they [insurgents] have no respect for any religion or faith,” Ghani said. Afghanistan has faced a series of large-scale attacks as the Taliban stepped up the war against the Kabul government in this year’s summer offensive. In addition, the emerging Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan has tried to expand its footprint with attacks in urban areas.

A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report reflecting data from 2011 to 2015 found that about 42 percent of girls and about 44 percent of boys ages 15-19 reported that they’d had sex. Both numbers continue a gradual, decades-long decline: In 1988, 51 percent of girls and 60 percent of boys in the same age group answered affirmatively on the question of sexual activity. The latest report, published Thursday, is based on a national sample of about 4,100 teens. It also found that about 80 percent of teens used contraception during their first sexual experience. WORLD POPULATION BY 2050

The projected world population by 2050, a U.N. report said Wednesday. India’s population is expected to surpass China’s in about seven years and Nigeria is projected to overtake the U.S. and become the third most populous country in the world shortly before 2050. The report estimates that the current world population is nearly 7.6 billion, and that from now through 2050 half the population growth will be concentrated in nine countries — India, Nigeria, Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the U.S., Uganda and Indonesia. Census: U.S. is getting older, more diverse The U.S. is growing older and more ethnically diverse, a trend that could strain government programs from Medicare to education, the Census Bureau reported Thursday. Here are three key takeaways from the report. LAURIE KELLMAN (AP)

5,000

The overall increase in the number of non-Hispanic whites from 2015 to 2016, a rate of less than one one-hundredth of 1 percent, the slowest among all ethnic and racial groups. The Asian population and those who identified as being of two or more races grew by 3 percent each. Hispanics grew by 2 percent. The black population grew by 1.2 percent.

38 yrs.

The median age of Americans in 2016, up from 35 in 2000. The jump was driven by the aging of the “baby boom” generation. The number of residents 65 and older grew from 35 million to 49.2 million during those 16 years, jumping from 12 percent of the total population to 15 percent.

6.8%

The population jump in children born in the U.S. in the year beginning July 1, 2015, making those born between 2001 and 2016 the fastest growing age group. Other age groups either lost or gained population by less than a percentage point, according to the Census Bureau. The data mean more demand for schools and bilingual education.

Report: Church abetted abusive English bishop LONDON The Church of England “colluded” with and helped to hide the long-term sexual abuse of young men by one of its former bishops, the head of the church said Thursday. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby apologized to the victims of ex-bishop Peter Ball as his church published a report that detailed how leaders did little about allegations against Ball, 85, over years and even appeared to cover up the case. Welby ordered the independent report after Ball was convicted

and imprisoned in 2015 for misconduct in public office and indecent assaults against teenagers and young men from the 1970s to 1990s. Ball, who admitted to abusing 18 young men, was released after serving 16 months. The report said that at the time the church trivialized Ball’s conduct, partly because of a lack of understanding about safeguarding vulnerable adult men. One of his victims died by suicide. “The church, at its most senior levels and over many years, supported him unwisely and displayed little care for his victims,”

the report said. Ball was arrested in 1992 for suspected indecent assault and given a police caution. He retired as bishop of Gloucester, but was allowed to continue work in churches and schools for years. The report said George Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time, believed Ball to be “basically innocent” and enabled Ball’s return to ministry. “This is inexcusable and shocking behavior,” Welby said, adding that the church “can never be complacent, we must learn lessons.” SYLVIA HUI (AP)

Few aviation mysteries have captivated the public as much as the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, whose plane vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 as she was attempting to become the first female pilot to fly around the world. Last year, a theory gained traction that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, crash landed on Nikumaroro Island in the Pacific. This weekend, the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery is planning to sail researchers to the island with a pack of forensically trained border collies to test the theory. National Geographic is co-sponsoring the trip. The mission is for the dogs to sniff out human bones that, through DNA matching, would confirm Earhart and Noonan landed and then perished on that island. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A rocky release of health bill POLITICS Senate Republicans launched their plan for shriveling Barack Obama’s health care law Thursday, edging a step closer to their dream of repeal with a bill that would slice and reshape Medicaid for the poor, relax rules on insurers and end tax increases on higher earners that have helped finance expanded coverage for millions. Four conservative GOP senators quickly announced initial opposition to the measure and others were evasive, raising the specter of a jarring rejection by the Republican-controlled body. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., indicated he was open to discussion and seemed determined to muscle the measure through his chamber next week. The release of the 142-page proposal ended the long wait for one of the most closely guarded bills in years. McConnell stitched it together behind closed doors, potentially moving President

Trump and the GOP a step closer to achieving perhaps their greatest goal — repealing former President Obama’s 2010 statute, his proudest domestic legacy. McConnell must navigate a narrow route in which defections by just three of the 52 Republican senators would doom the legislation. He and others said the measure would make health insurance more affordable and eliminate Obama coverage requirements that some people find onerous. “We have to act,” McConnell said. “Because Obamacare is a direct attack on the middle class, and American families deserve better than its failing status quo.” Democrats said the measure would result in skimpier policies and higher out-of-pocket costs for many and erode gains made under Obama that saw roughly 20 million additional Americans gain coverage. “We live in the wealthiest country on earth. Surely we can do better than what the Republican health care bill promises,”

said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. Four conservative senators expressed opposition but openness to talks: Ted Cruz of Texas, Kentucky’s Rand Paul, Mike Lee of Utah and Ron Johnson from Wisconsin. They said the measure falls short, missing “the most important promise that we made to Americans: to

repeal Obamacare and lower their health care costs.” On the other hand, Sens. Dean Heller of Nevada, facing a competitive 2018 re-election battle, and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia expressed concerns about the bill’s Medicaid cuts. And Susan Collins of Maine reiterated her opposition to language blocking federal money

for Planned Parenthood, which many Republicans oppose because it provides abortions. At the White House, Trump called Democrats “obstructionists” for opposing the measure and added, “We’ll hopefully get something done and it will be something with heart and very meaningful.” Oba ma was more tha n skeptical. “If there’s a chance you might get sick, get old or start a family, this bill will do you harm,” he wrote in a Facebook post. He said “small tweaks” during the upcoming debate “cannot change the fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation.” The House approved its version of the bill last month. Though Trump lauded its passage in a Rose Garden ceremony, he called the House measure “mean” last week. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said that under the House bill, 23 million fewer people would have coverage by 2026. The budget office analysis of the Senate measure is expected early next week. ALAN FRAM AND RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR (AP)

How the House and Senate bills compare with the Affordable Care Act INDIVIDUAL MANDATE ACA: The individual mandate requires most Americans to have health coverage or pay a fine. House bill: Instead of the mandate, insurers would be allowed to impose a 30 percent premium surcharge on consumers who purchase a new plan after letting their previous coverage lapse — incentivizing healthy people to remain insured. States could choose to make this penalty more severe. Senate bill: The individual mandate would be eliminated. Nothing would incentivize healthy people to get insurance.

YOUNG ADULTS ON PARENTS’ INSURANCE ACA/House/Senate bills: This provision was unchanged. Young adults could stay on their parents’ health insurance until they’re 26.

TAX CREDITS ACA: Tax credits are primarily based on income, age and geography, which benefits lowerand moderate-income people. House bill: Tax credits would be based primarily on age. The amount would not increase when premiums increased, and people living in higher-cost areas would receive no

additional money. Senate bill: Tax credits would be primarily based on age, income and geography, but they would be made to cover a skimpier plan, and people would need to be lower-income than under the ACA to receive them.

PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS ACA/Senate bills: Insurance companies are not allowed to increase premiums or deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. House bill: States could allow insurers to increase premiums based on pre-existing conditions if they had a break in coverage. States

Prosecutor: Paris attacker pledged allegiance to ISIS, asked family to see him as martyr

would have to set up some other program, like a high-risk pool, to cover their sickest residents. And the federal government would have its own $8 billion fund to help cover sick people’s high premiums.

MEDICAID ACA: Medicaid is currently an entitlement program with openended, matching federal funds for anyone who qualifies. House bill: Medicaid would be funded by giving states a per capita amount or block grant based on how much each state is currently spending, not adjusting for rising

costs. This is expected to substantially decrease federal funding. Senate bill: Medicaid would be funded by giving states a per capita amount or block grant, beginning in 2021. The amount would grow more slowly than in the House bill, meaning bigger spending cuts overall.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD ACA: Planned Parenthood is eligible for Medicaid reimbursements, but federal money cannot fund abortions. House/Senate bills: Planned Parenthood would face a one-year Medicaid funding freeze. (TWP)

Trump ends mystery, saying he has no ‘tapes’

GULF COAST HAZARD

Floods could unleash rafts of fire ants

POLITICS President Trump said Thursday that he does not have “tapes” of his private conversations with then-FBI Director James Comey, finally ending a mystery of his own creation that began last month when he suggested that he had privately recorded their talks. Trump on May 12 floated the idea he had an audio recording of their conversations, apparently as a way to try to intimidate Comey. For nearly six weeks, the president and senior White House officials refused to tell the public whether such tapes existed. But after an inquiry from congressional investigators about the tapes, Trump tweeted Thursday, “I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.” On May 12, a day after details of a one-on-one dinner he had with Comey were reported by The New York Times, Trump issued an apparent threat to the former FBI director, whom he had recently fired. “James B. Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” he tweeted. In the weeks since, Trump, White House press secretary Sean Spicer and other top officials have repeatedly been

pressed on whether the president had such “tapes” and whether he records private conversations in the White House. They declined to provide answers each time. At a June 9 news conference, Trump played coy when asked whether the “tapes” exist. He told reporters they would have to wait “a fairly short period of time” to find out. “Oh, you’re going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer. Don’t worry.” Comey, meanwhile, effectively dared Trump to release whatever “tapes” he might have. “Lordy, I hope there are tapes,” Comey said in his Senate testimony earlier this month. At an off-camera briefing for White House reporters, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders attempted to put the issue to bed. “I thi nk the president’s

statement via Twitter today is extremely clear, and I don’t have anything to add beyond the statement itself,” she said. But Rep. Adam B. Schiff, Calif., the top Democrat on the intelligence panel, said the president’s tweet was not sufficient. “We’d all like to believe that our president can be trusted when he says something; regrettably, though, he has repeatedly proved otherwise,” Schiff said. “If the president is being less than candid about this, I think we have very serious problems with the White House.” Schiff added that even if he accepts the president’s assertion that the tapes do not exist, he has questions about “why he would have said the opposite to begin with.” PHILIP RUCKER AND KAROUN

Tropical Storm Cindy was downgraded Thursday, but Gulf Coast residents aren’t in the clear. Severe flooding is forecast, which might unleash another problem: floating fire ants. Alabama officials told residents to keep their eyes peeled for the threat. “Floodwaters will not kill fire ants,” the warning states. “Floating colonies can look like ribbons, streamers or a ball of ants floating on the water.” The ants seek dry surfaces and can climb onto boats and oars. Alabama officials are urging residents to wear gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes and consider spraying insect repellent on their clothes. (TWP)

U.S. to lift Yellowstone grizzly bear protections

Protections that have been in place for more than 40 years for grizzly bears in the Yellowstone National Park area will be lifted this summer after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ruled Thursday that the population is no longer threatened. Grizzlies in all continental U.S. states have been protected under the Endangered Species Act since 1975, when just 136 bears roamed in and around Yellowstone. There are now an estimated 700 in the area. (AP) U.K.’s Prince Philip leaves London hospital after treatment for infection

Legal pot tied to increased car crash claims TRANSPORTATION A recent insurance study links increased car crash claims to legalized recreational marijuana. The Highway Loss Data Institute, a leading insurance research group, said in study results released Thursday that collision claims in Colorado, Washington and Oregon went up 2.7 percent in the years since legal recreational marijuana sales began when compared with surrounding states. Legal recreational pot sales in Colorado began in January 2014, followed six months later in Washington and in October 2015 in Oregon. The study examined claims from January 2012 to October 2016. “We believe that the data is saying that crash risk has increased in these states and those crash risks are associated with the legalization of marijuana,” said Matt Moore, the institute’s senior vice president. Mason Tvert, a marijuana legalization advocate, questioned the study’s comparison of claims in rural states such as Idaho, Wyoming and Montana with Colorado, Oregon and Washington that have dense populations and how that affected the findings. Researchers accounted for factors such as the number of vehicles on the road and control states, age and gender of drivers and weather. Neighboring states with similar fluctuations in claims were used for comparison. P. SOLOMON BANDA (AP)

Carr primes QB market for Cousins

NFL The Raiders on Thursday rewarded quarterback Derek Carr with the next NFL mega-contract, making him the highestpaid player in NFL history with a five-year, $125 million extension. Carr, who will play out the final year of his rookie deal this season, is now under contract through 2022. The record sum is a significant step for the Raiders as they attempt to challenge the Patriots for AFC supremacy, but it’s also meaningful for the next two quarterbacks in line, Washington’s Kirk Cousins and the Detroit’s Matthew Stafford. With a new standard in place, it’s now up to the representatives for Cousins and Stafford to exceed a contract for Carr that surpasses the previous record for average annual salary, Andrew

Luck’s $24.6 million-per-year with the Colts. Carr deserved to set the salary bar for his position. If he hadn’t been hurt for the playoffs, the Raiders might have been a formidable postseason challenger for New England. The Raiders have sold out their season tickets in Oakland for the 2017 season even with their already ratified move to Las Vegas pending for the 2019 or 2020 season. They lured running back Marshawn Lynch out of retirement and have legitimate hopes to bring a championship to a city they’ve arranged to exit. Like Carr, Stafford is coming off a productive season. He threw for 4,327 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2016, leading the Lions to the playoffs even without retired wide receiver Calvin Johnson. And Stafford, 29, is entering the final season of a contract that will pay him $16.5 million this year. “The Stafford contract clearly will take it the next step higher,”

Cousins thing, that’s a little bit different. Those are negotiations where the numbers are set by the tag, more so than other contracts.” Cousins, franchise-tagged by the Redskins for a second straight year, is due to make $23.94 million this season. The two sides have until July 17 to craft a long-term deal — the NFL this week pushed the deadline back from July 15. Tagging Cousins a third time would cost the Redskins $34.47 million next season. Using a transition tag in 2018, which would offer them a right to match offers for Cousins, would cost $28.73 million. MARK MASKE

Goodwin gets better with time NATIONALS In late April, when the Nationals needed an outfielder to replace the injured Adam Eaton, the club looked to its Class AAA affiliate and bypassed Brian Goodwin. Instead, Washington plucked Rafael Bautista from Syracuse for his first major league stint. The decision surprised Goodwin, a former first-round pick who debuted in the majors last season and who figured to be next on the depth chart. But he remained undeterred. “I think it actually worked the opposite way,” Goodwin said. “Like, ‘I see where I stand. I see what I got to do. It’s not going to be given to me.’ And I don’t want that. I want to earn it.” Less than two months later, Goodwin, 26, is back in the majors and enjoying his best stretch ever while starting games at all three outfield spots. In 18 games in June, the outfielder is batting .255 with an .875 on-base-plusslugging percentage and has hit all four of his career home runs.

NICK WASS (AP)

Platoon outfielder takes advantage of chance to play nearly every day

Outfielder Brian Goodwin has hit all four of his career homers this month.

In his first appearance of the month, Goodwin started in place of a suspended Bryce Harper and bashed four hits, including a home run and a triple, in a June 2 win over the Athletics. Two days later, Jayson Werth fouled a ball off his toe, granting Goodwin his first extended

regular playing time in the majors. The left-handed hitter has settled into a platoon with Ryan Raburn, starting against righthanded pitchers in Werth’s absence. On June 14, he hit his third home run in three starts across four days. A day later, he hit two doubles in a win over the Mets.

The U.S. attorney’s office has charged Michael Boddie, the father of former NFL quarterback Michael Vick, for his role in a “large scale heroin distribution operation” in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Boddie, 55, has been credited with introducing football to his son, but the two were estranged for most of Vick’s 13-year NFL career. (TWP)

“You can’t simulate [regular playing time],” Goodwin said. “I think just being out there and getting the reps, it helps you take off.” Goodwin impressed when he finally made the majors at age 25 last August, after battling injuries and inconsistency in the minors. He hit .286 with a .747 OPS in 22 games last year. But there was a simple reason for Washington’s decision to bypass Goodwin for a return in April: He wasn’t producing. Goodwin was batting .189 with a .507 OPS in Syracuse’s first 12 games. All seven of his hits were singles. Then a switch flipped, and he batted .302 with six extrabase hits over his next 13 games. The numbers were on par with his production with Syracuse last season, when he clubbed 14 home runs and posted a .787 OPS in 119 games. Now that Goodwin is back in the majors, he’s capitalizing on a chance to prove he belongs. “I don’t think there’s any difference,” Goodwin said. “I think I’m still playing the same game. I think it’s just actually getting an opportunity. … I just had to wait my turn, I guess.”

Cubs send Schwarber down to Class AAA Iowa Heading into Thursday’s game at Miami, the Cubs demoted left fielder Kyle Schwarber to their Class AAA affiliate in Iowa. Schwarber, the fourth overall pick in 2014, is batting just .171 with 12 homers and 28 RBIs in 64 games this year. He made his MLB debut in 2015, when he hit .246 with 16 homers and 43 RBIs in 69 games. He missed most of last season with a knee injury but returned in October to help the Cubs win the World Series. Possible options for the Capitals to replace Schmidt A proven defense — with Nate Schmidt in an elevated role — was supposed to be a strength for the Capitals next season, but Vegas general manager George McPhee swiped him with an expansion draft pick. After losing Schmidt, 25, for nothing, the Capitals have to choose one of three ways to replace him.

Trade for a blue-liner

Fill the role internally

Washington is already facing salarycap constraints, and signing blueliners on the open market is pricey. The Capitals still have five restricted free agents to re-sign, and acquiring a top-four defenseman on July 1 could prevent them from retaining winger T.J. Oshie. Johnny Oduya, 35, could potentially be an affordable option but wouldn’t fit the team’s vision of getting younger.

The Capitals tried to strike a deal to keep Vegas from claiming Schmidt, but the asking price was deemed too high. Given that the team was hesitant to trade assets to keep Schmidt, it might not want to acquire a defenseman that way. But if it does, the Wild are reportedly looking to deal one of defensemen Matt Dumba, Jonas Brodin and Marco Scandella.

The Capitals re-signed blue-line prospect Christian Djoos on Thursday to a two-year, $1.3 million contract, expecting him to be a full-time NHL player by the second year. Djoos is a smooth skater but is also undersized. Brooks Orpik could return to a top-four role, but his stay-at-home style wouldn’t match the puck-moving look that Washington had with Schmidt.

As with our human kids, we have to be mindful of the temperature in the summer. If you are leaving your pup in your apartment, be sure that the AC is on at a comfortable temperature and that a bowl of water is left where your dog can get to it. If you do venture out to a dog park, keep an eye on your dog to make sure he doesn’t get overheated or dehydrated. It’s always a good idea to keep a portable dog bowl in your car with some bottled water in case your pet is in need of a drink. Also consider some homemade frozen dog treats your

pup is sure to love. If you decide to take your dog with you on errands, do not leave your dog in the car. In the heat, a parked car can reach a temperate of up to an astounding 120 degrees in just minutes! Leaving your dog in a parked car puts your pet’s life in danger by potentially causing overheating and heat stress which could result in death. In addition, there have also been recent incidents of dogs being stolen from unlocked cars. Lastly, whenever walking your dog on pavement be mindful of the temperature of the asphalt. If it’s too hot for the back of your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Consider some cute dog booties if you live in a city apartment with your dog that requires frequent walks on pavement. If you keep these tips in mind, you and your dog should be able to have a healthy and fun-filled summer together in your apartment. ■ By Shayda Power for Apartment Showcase

It is a good idea to crate train your new puppy or dog, especially when you are living in an apartment. Dogs and puppies can get into a lot of trouble when left unsupervisedthey can get into food, destroy belongings, and develop habits like using your favorite carpet as a pee pad. Even if your dog doesn’t have these behaviors now, if they do develop later on you may find that you want to crate him. It’s much easier to crate train a dog when they are young, so start

early. And don’t feel bad- when dogs are crate trained early, the crate is their ‘safe place’ where they go to relax and rest. The more acclimated a dog is to a crate, the less they will cry, if at all, when a parent leaves the home. Often you will find with a crate trained dog that he will go into his crate on his own to relax and hang out when he wants some downtime.

Optimus Prime is back to wreak tons of havoc to the point of oblivion.

Metal-crunching mess The new ‘Transformers’ feels more like a checklist of cliches than a coherent story FILM REVIEW “Transformers: The Last Knight” begins in the Dark Ages, as King Arthur and Lancelot are preparing to enter a brutal battle. They try to stall, waiting for Merlin to materialize with some magical surprise. (Hint: It’s massive and made of metal.) “This is what the end looks like,” says a peasant, amid the carnage. If only. The fifth “Transformers” installment is just getting started, and already it’s exhausting. Still to come: 2½ hours of fiery explosions, incomprehensible dialogue and nonsensical plotting. After that brief “historical” prologue, we’re back in the present day, as mankind is working on destroying the remaining

Transformers, aka giant alien robots. The machines do have a few allies: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), for example, a mechanic who repairs his buddies when they break down. But during a mission — to do something, but it’s never clear what — he winds up taking care of a spunky 14-year-old orphan named Izabella (Isabela Moner). Wouldn’t you know it? She also wields a mean wrench. Cade then ends up on the run from both the government and the most malicious of the Transformers, Megatron (voiced by Frank Welker). In the midst of the chase, our hero gets intercepted by a robot-butler (Jim Carter), who delivers Cade to the elderly eccentric Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins). He

‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ (PG-13, 149 min.) DIRECTOR: Michael Bay STARS: Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, Laura Haddock IN A NUTSHELL: Transformers and humans are at war, and now it’s up to the robots’ human ally Cade to find a way to save the world.

claims to know how to end the war between humans and machines. The script (by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Ken Nolan) checks off all the requisite boxes: Precocious kid? Check. Cute robot? Kooky old man? Dastardly villains? A good guy who becomes a bad guy (but only for a little

while)? They’re all here, including an out-of-place love story that develops between Cade and a brilliant academic (Laura Haddock). The movie is cut like the world’s longest trailer, pinballing from scene to scene. Wahlberg and Hopkins race through their lines, clearly trying to spit them out before the camera cuts away. It’s no use — dialogue gets lost. Not that it matters. The script is nothing special and, besides, the movie is really aimed at a global audience, hungry for empty action. Watching “Transfomers” is like sitting in a car that’s revving its engine while stuck in the mud. It sounds like it’s getting somewhere, even though all it ever does is spin its wheels. Howard takes command of the Han Solo movie

Lucasfilm has tapped Ron Howard as a replacement director for the “Star Wars” Han Solo spinoff film after the surprise departure of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The studio announced the news Thursday, two days after Lord and Miller left the project over creative differences. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said production of the still-untitled film will resume on July 10. (AP)

‘Maudie’ PG-13, 115 min.

“Maudie,” a fact-based drama about the late Nova Scotia folk artist Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins) and her strange relationship with her husband, is a charming tale — or as charming as a tale can be that involves a person as nearly unlovable as Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke). Hawke is good at playing bad, but Hawkins is better, rendering in “Maudie” a portrait of a woman that feels raw, real and revelatory. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

‘Abacus: Small Enough to Jail’ Unrated, 88 min.

This documentary from Steve James tells the story of Abacus, a family-run bank in New York that became the only U.S. bank to be indicted on charges of fraud after the 2008 financial crisis. “Abacus” is a story of family, immigrant communities and scapegoating — as well as a rare case in which you end up rooting for the bank. that Iron Man plays a pivotal role. Even small things can rob the audience of the pleasure of watching a character be revealed: Thanks to the “Justice League” trailer, I know that Aquaman has a wry sense of humor and swigs liquor out of the bottle. And with “The Beguiled,” the trailer put the possibility of Bobbitt-izing so front and center that it’s easy to assume that’s what the movie is about. It’s not, and suggesting that is unfair to the work. My husband and I constantly laugh at the previews for AMC shows, like the ones at the close of “Mad Men” and “Better Call Saul” episodes. They’re so ambiguous that the most you get out of them is confirmation that the characters you saw this week might be in the show next week. And we watch the show the next week not because we know what’s going to happen, but precisely because we don’t. I’m not saying movie marketing has to go that far, but neither does it have to represent — or misrepresent — an entire film. Trailers got their name because they used to “trail” the main feature, so at least then you had the option to leave.

WARNER BROS

When I walked into “The Beguiled” a few weeks ago, I assumed a few things. I was pretty sure it would be good, as director Sofia Coppola had taken the best director prize at the Cannes film festival just days before. Second, I was pretty sure Nicole Kidman and her group of Civil War-era students were going to cut off Colin Farrell’s penis. The former bit of information I knew from following entertainment news; I got the penis idea from the trailer. It’s my preference not to watch movie trailers, which always seem to give away too much, but part of my job is writing “Trailer Park,” a weekly synopsis of two trailers (read today’s brilliant entry on the next page). So now I have to know way more than I want to. Films have to be promoted; studios don’t trust audiences to buy an unknown cow, so they drench us with free milk. One of the worst recent offenders was the trailer for “Rogue One” that revealed Darth Vader would appear. And now, with the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” I and the rest of the world know

FOCUS FEATURES

All is revealed: I wish trailers left room for mystery

The trailer for “The Beguiled,” top, lets us know Colin Farrell is losing an important limb. And we’re already too familiar with Aquaman, above left.

And most audiences did, which is why the “coming soon” slot was moved to take up the first 20 minutes of the moviegoing experience, with no concern as to whether people have a baby sitter at home, which, hello, is not cheap. But now teasers and trailers and teasers of trailers are everywhere — TV and Facebook and Twitter all want you to see “War for the Planet of the Apes,” and they’re not giving up until they wear you down.

It’s possible to build an audience by trusting that people can make the choice about whether or not to see a movie based on hints, not on full synopses. Trailers should be more burlesque and less striptease — coy and tantalizing, rather than showing everything the movie’s got. After all, there’s nothing like a little mystery to really get people’s interest. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

NOVEL IDEA

John Green’s next book is *in the stars* this year

John Green, author of the popular young adult books “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Paper Towns” and “Looking for Alaska,” has a new novel due out Oct. 10, Dutton Books said Thursday. The book is called “Turtles All the Way Down” and tells of a 16-year-old girl searching for a missing billionaire as she struggles with mental illness. “Turtles” is Green’s first book since “The Fault in Our Stars,” which came out in 2012. In ‘Bad Batch,’ is dystopia better than a utopia? FILM REVIEW “The Bad Batch,” the follow-up to filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut 2014 feature “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” is set in a dystopian near-future, and the universe it conjures — a wasteland where America’s human garbage survives in an unforgiving desert dotted with trash heaps and encampments of cannibals — feels extreme, yet disturbingly plausible. Our heroine is Arlen (Suki Waterhouse), a woman cast from society and hunted down by man-eaters who took two of her limbs. She makes her way to a sanctuary city called Comfort, one of the last outposts of human decency, run by a benevolent despot called the Dream (Keanu Reeves). Later, the Dream will expound on his philosophy of governance: “I make s--- go away.” The problem with “The Bad Batch” is that there isn’t much narrative conflict once Arlen gets to Comfort, a place where street vendors sell noodles, not human flesh, but in which the leader exerts a cultlike supremacy over his subjects. In addition to presenting a parable about the collapse of society, Amirpour’s film is also a kind of postmodern Adam-andEve story with the Edenic aspects of Comfort. However, by the end, you might feel it’s better to fend for yourself among people who make no secret about wanting to eat you. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The House’

‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’

EXPECTED RELEASE: June 30

EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 13

SUMMARY: Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler star as parents who open a casino in their house to pay for their daughter’s college. This is a bad idea, even though the average 2016-17 in-state tuition was $24,610 and the average 2016 graduate has over $37,000 in student loans. Still, underground casinos are morally wrong. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: This film is based on the true story of the little boy whose stuffed toys inspired A.A. Milne’s (Domhnall Gleeson) Winnie-the-Pooh books that probably made him a bazillionaire. This heartwarming tale is sure to make parents worldwide begin work on their Legos-on-the-Floor series of novels. K.P.K.

“Jimmy Kimmel let Peter Butera finish his speech. Thanks, Jimmy.”

“That’s weird, usually tall skinny guys are great at sumo wrestling.” @WIZARD_0F_KOZ, joking about a video

of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who didn’t have a chance when he tried to compete against sumo wrestlers in Japan. The quarterback is on a promotional tour with Under Armour through Asia, where perhaps he may ask the wrestlers to join the Patriots. “Why hasn’t an NFL team tried a sumo guy on the o-line?” @goldy881 wondered.

@KLIA00, tweeting at Jimmy Kimmel, who invited high school

valedictorian Peter Butera to finish his recent graduation speech on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” At his actual graduation, when Butera veered from his pre-approved remarks and began to criticize the school for not giving students enough chances to lead, the school cut his microphone and asked him to sit back down. “All you did was give the school, like, a two-star Yelp review,” Kimmel said, joking about Butera’s message after he gave the speech.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
