‘RODENT IN PERIL’

Squirrel is rescued from manhole cover only to die of embarrassment

This is what happens when baggage handlers double as flight attendants

Sometimes putting no thought at all into something actually does pay off

Firefighters, police and a veterinary clinic combined forces to rescue a red squirrel that had gotten its tiny head stuck in a manhole cover in the western German city of Dortmund. Dortmund’s fire department said Friday that it responded Thursday morning to a call about the rodent in peril. Initial attempts to free the animal were unsuccessful, so the entire manhole cover was removed and taken to a nearby veterinary clinic. Vets used anesthetic to calm the squirrel and then freed it. It is expected to be released into the wild soon. (AP)

Air Canada said Sunday it’s looking into how crew members could have disembarked from a plane in Toronto without noticing a sleeping passenger who was left behind. “I think I’m having a bad dream bc like seriously how is this happening!!?!” Tiffani Adams recounted in a June 19 Facebook post sent by her friend,= Deanna Noel-Dale. Adams said that her phone died shortly after she woke up and she eventually had to open the cabin door and yell for ground crew on the tarmac to come and let her down. (AP)

Turns out zero can be a lucky number. North Carolina’s state lottery Saturday said it set a record payout — $7.8 million — after the winning numbers in a Pick 4 game came back “0-00-0.” About 1,000 tickets at $1 were sold and will pay out at $5,000. Another 1,000 tickets were sold for 50 cents, and they will pay out at $2,500. Lottery officials said winners should expect “extended waiting times” when picking up their prizes. The previous record was $7.5 million in 2012, when the winning Pick 4 numbers were “1-1-1-1.” (AP)

Driving to and from school and to the pool where she works as a lifeguard, she sometimes forgets the “Jack Diamond Show” is over, and “reflexively” hits the button. “Then it’s gospel music and it makes me so sad,” McClure said. Ward 2 D.C. Council member set to lose committee chair role as scandal continues POLITICS Federa l agents on F riday searched the home of D.C. Council member Jack Evans, D-Ward 2, a day after the disclosure of a confidential memo that says Evans “repeatedly and proactively” used his position as chairman of the Metro board to help a company that was secretly paying him $50,000 per year. Within hours of the conclusion of the FBI search, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, D, announced that he would seek to strip Evans of his position as chairman of the council’s finance and revenue committee and appoint a panel to investigate him.

“It is imperative that public officials maintain high ethical standards,” Mendelson said. The federal and local actions signaled a turning point for D.C.’s longest-serving elected official. An ally of developers and the business community, Evans has served on the council for 28 years. Months of defenses against questions about conflicts between Evans’ consulting business and his lawmaker role began to crumble after The Washington Post on Thursday published a 20-page memo summarizing the findings of an outside law firm hired by the Metro board to investigate those conflicts.

Evans said by late afternoon Thursday that he would resign from the Metro board — while keeping his council seat. Among its findings, the Metro investigation said Evans knowingly violated the board’s ethics rules by taking official actions that would benefit his personal friend, Rusty Lindner, and Lindner’s company, Colonial Parking. Evans shared Metro ridership information with Lindner and repeatedly spurred the agency’s inspector general to investigate a rival company. At the same time, a consulting firm owned by Evans collected a $50,000 annual fee from Lindner’s company that Evans did not disclose, the investigation found. A federal grand jury has subpoenaed documents from Evans

By last Friday, Evans could no longer avoid condemnation by elected colleagues. “This is straight-up corruption. I don’t know how else to view it,” said council member Mary Cheh, D-Ward 3. Cheh, who has served with Evans for 12 years, said she felt “a deep sense of betrayal” after reading the memo. LGBTQ advocates push for services outside D.C. HEALTH After Ashanti Carmon and Zoe Spears were found gunned down in the Maryland town of Fairmount Heights, transgender advocates from D.C. stepped in to mourn. D.C. is known for its large LGBTQ community and the many resources available to them, from health care to housing to employment support. But in Prince George’s County, advocacy groups focused on LGBTQ issues are few and far between, community members say. Unlike D.C., which has a city government office dedicated to LGBTQ affairs, Prince George’s has none. In counties across Maryland and Virginia, LGBTQ-focused advocacy and government programs continue to lag far behind the District, said Ruby Corado, executive director of LGBTQ outreach center Casa Ruby. Carmon and Spears knew each other and were commercial sex workers on occasion, but authorities haven’t uncovered any evidence that their deaths are linked or related to gender, said Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski. But to LGBTQ advocates, the deaths of Carmon and Spears symbolize dangers

faced by transgender women of color, particularly those who rely on sex work to survive. “In Prince George’s, there’s really been no advocacy on LGBT issues,” Corado said. Residents, she said, “are fed up because they see people are dying.” County officials acknowledged

the problem Friday. Prince George’s County Council member Jolene Ivey, D-District 5, said the county wants to do more, but that the resources aren’t there. Police have ramped up patrols of areas used by sex workers, and vacant houses, where prostitution often occurs, are being boarded up, Fairmount Heights Police Chief Stephen R. Watkins said. But Watkins said local leaders need to focus on factors driving transgender women into sex work. “There’s a variety of reasons they’re on the street,” he said. “They’re homeless, their parents or families pushed them out because of their transition. . . . Trying to address all of these problems is extreme for D.C. alone, much less for a small town like ours.” SAMANTHA SCHMIDT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Pompeo confronts dual crises Secretary heads abroad combative toward Iran, optimistic on N. Korea

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appears to be optimistic about denuclearization talks, but not about Iran.

MIDDLE EAST Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is confronting two crises that will likely define his legacy, as he starts an overseas trip with talks on Iran and will end it focusing on North Korea. While Pompeo sounded optimistic about resuming negotiations with North Korea, which already has an arsenal of nuclear weapons, his rhetoric remained downbeat and abrasive toward Iran, which does not have any nuclear arms yet. Soaring fears of a military confrontation between the U.S. and Iran have changed the character and timing of Pompeo’s trip that was supposed to have featured him talking trade with India, then joining President Trump at the end of the week in Japan and South Korea. But stops in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were added at the last minute, after Trump said he had canceled a military strike on Iran to avoid the loss of life. Pompeo, who last year issued a list of 12 sweeping demands for change in Iran, shows no signs of softening his outreach to the Islamic Republic. He began his travels lashing out at Tehran, belittling its explanation of why it downed a U.S. drone last week as “childlike” and not worthy of belief. He specifically swatted down reports he said had originated

in Iran, suggesting the U.S. was already withdrawing its troops in the region and making peace overtures to Iran through the Omanis. Pompeo said his talks with the Saudi and UAE rulers will focus on corralling other countries into a coalition that “is prepared to push back against the world’s largest state sponsor of terror.” Even as Pompeo has meetings with Iran’s neighbors, who share his assessment, the Trump administration is expected to impose more sanctions today. Pompeo declined to identify what the new sanctions would be, other than characterizing them as “significant.” Pompeo said the goal is to

“deny Iran the resources to foment terror, to build out their nuclear weapon system, to build out their missile program. We are going to deny them the resources they need to do that.” Like Trump, Pompeo said the

U.S. is prepared to negotiate. Despite his list of demands last year, Pompeo now says the offer comes “with no preconditions.” In contrast to his remarks on Iran, Pompeo sounded optimistic about the prospects for resuming talks with North Korea. Though talks have stalemated since Trump walked away from a summit with Kim Jong Un in Hanoi in February, Pompeo confirmed that Trump had sent a written response to a letter Kim sent Trump recently. “I’m hopeful that this will provide a good foundation for us to begin to continue these important discussions with the North Koreans to denuclearize the peninsula,” Pompeo said.

NEIL ARMSTRONG (NASA VIA GETTY IMAGES)

A half-century since astronauts first walked on the moon, the fantasy of human expansion into space has been tempered by scientific reality.

Earth: The best of all worlds Humanity’s experience in space tells us Mars is no sure backup plan

SCIENCE Mars was supposed to be next. Surely the moon was just a steppingstone in the conquest of space. Half a century after Apollo 11, we have been forced again and again to recalibrate our expectations. The exploration of deep space by flesh-and-blood human beings no longer looks inevitable. It doesn’t look especially affordable under plausible government budgets in the post-Space Race era, and private-sector dreams may never quite pencil out, as they say. Space travel remains dangerous; the catastrophic loss of two space shuttle crews proved that. There’s also been a more subtle revelation from half a century’s experience with spaceflight. Going into space has given us a greater appreciation of our connection to the Earth. The human body goes haywire

when hurled into space and away from the familiar environment of the Earth’s surface. We learned this by doing it. And our innate terrestrial nature is both biological and psychological: Astronauts in orbit spend a lot of their free time looking out the window, toward home. Maybe the most important thing we’ve learned from the Space Age is that we’re Earthlings. When astronaut Scott Kelly went into orbit in 2015 for a nearly yearlong mission, his immune system initially went bonkers. It acted as if under attack by a virus. At the cellular level, his body was screaming: Where’s the gravity? The fluids in his body wound up in the wrong places, an occupational hazard for astronauts. The effects include insomnia and blurred vision. And although his genetic code didn’t change, his gene expression — the creation of proteins that are the workhorses of the body — did undergo pronounced changes, with some genes turning off and

Mars? Don’t count on it.

Although SpaceX’s Elon Musk sees Mars as a fixer-upper planet, it would take a heck of a lot of fixin’. That’s the message from the other tycoon with a space company — Jeff Bezos, founder of Blue Origin and owner of The Washington Post. Bezos favors the gradual migration of heavy industry into space, so that Earth can become a protected sanctuary. He said in 2016: “Think about it: no whiskey, no bacon, no swimming pools, no oceans, no hiking, no urban centers. Eventually, Mars might be amazing. But that’s a long way in the future.” (TWP)

others turning on. While Scott orbited the Earth, his twin brother, Mark, went about his business on the surface, pausing to let researchers sample his blood, urine, etc., for comparison with his sibling in space. NASA said its Twins Study revealed no showstoppers — nothing that would prevent an eventual human mission to Mars. But the study provided a

North Korea says Kim Jong Un will “contemplate” the “excellent” letter he received from Trump

reminder that space travel is brutal on human bodies, which are adapted for life on this particular planet. Our bones lose density. Muscles can atrophy. Astronauts have to exercise two hours a day to keep from wasting away. Then there’s radiation. Earth’s magnetic field protects the International Space Station from much of the radiation of space. But an astronaut journeying to Mars would not have that protection and would be particularly vulnerable to “cosmic rays,” which are elementary particles of galactic origin that travel at nearly the speed of light and could potentially cause cancer, genetic damage and acute radiation sickness. Human psychology is another area of concern for NASA. Scott Kelly could look out a window and see the Earth. He could call home. He could be in touch, in real time. But a one-way trip to Mars would take at least six months — and probably longer. A radio signal between the spacecraft and the Earth would take minutes to travel across the interplanetary distances, rendering a

normal conversation impossible. “It’s a certainty when people go to Mars [that] some of those people are going to suffer major psychiatric symptoms because that’s just the nature of the way people are,” said Twins Study co-author Andrew Feinberg of Johns Hopkins University. The most passionate advocates for space exploration say we have no alternative. They see it as an existential imperative, because bad things can happen to good planets (ask the dinosaurs that didn’t have a backup plan 66 million years ago when a giant rock hit the Earth). The late Stephen Hawking was among the smart folks saying we need a fallback option. “Although the chance of disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next 1,000 or 10,000 years,” Hawking said, according to a November 2016 Newsweek article. “By that time, we should have spread out into space and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race.” Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, has said the central purpose of his company is to create a human civilization on Mars so that we can be a two-planet species. He is not talking about a mere Antarctica-style research outpost: He wants to build cities on Mars, a completely self-sustaining civilization, which would preserve humanity in case something dire happened to Earth. Scott Kelly has no delusions about Mars as a potential mulligan: “It will always be easier to take care of this planet than to make Mars into another Earth. It is not our lifeboat.” If there’s one thing that science has told us again and again — and this is a deeply humbling message — it’s that the universe is not about us. What’s certain is that, in the foreseeable future, there’s no plausible do-over for Earth. That’s what we learned from going into space. JOEL ACHENBACH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Columnist alleges Trump raped her WASHINGTON E. Jean Carroll, a New Yorkbased writer and longtime women’s advice columnist, accused President Trump of sexually assaulting her more than two decades ago in a dressing room of a upscale Manhattan department store, an episode detailed in a book excerpt published Friday in New York Magazine. In an interview on Friday, Carroll, 75, reiterated the allegations, saying that during a chance encounter with the then-real estate developer at Bergdorf Goodman in late 1995 or early 1996, Trump attacked her in a dressing room. She said he knocked her head against a wall, pulled down her tights and briefly penetrated her before she pushed him off and ran out. A friend of Carroll’s said that she described the incident to her shortly after it occurred. In a statement released Friday night, Trump said that it never happened and that he did not know Carroll. On Saturday evening, gunmen attacked an executive meeting of the Amhara regional state in the city of Bahir Dar, killing its president, Ambachew Mekonnen, and his top adviser and grievously injuring the regional attorney general.

Hours later, in the capital Addis Ababa, the bodyguard of army chief of staff Gen. Seare Mekonnen opened fire on him, killing the general and an associate. Government spokeswoman Bilene Seyoum blamed the attack on a recently amnestied brigadier general, Asaminew Tsige, who had been imprisoned for his political views by the previous government several years before. She said most of the perpetrators, including Seare’s bodyguard, were in custody and operations were underway to sweep up the remaining accomplices. The Amhara region was “currently under 100 percent control,” she said.

The country’s politics have undergone a dramatic change over the past year, with the arrival of a new reformist prime minister who has invited back exiled opposition politicians and guerrilla groups and freed thousands of political prisoners. The new freedoms, however, have allowed long-simmering tensions to rise to the surface, and millions have been displaced in ethnic-based land conflicts around the country. PAUL SCHEMM

“Saudi Arabia is a big buyer of [American] product. That means something to me.”

Sudan’s protest movement accepted an Ethiopian roadmap for a civilian-led transitional government, a spokesman said Sunday. The country’s military rulers did not immediately commit to the plan. IMMIGRATION President Trump abruptly suspended his threat to deport “millions” of undocumented immigrants, demanding that Democrats and Republicans forge a plan to stanch the record flows of asylum-seeking families across the southern border into the U.S. Trump had announced the raids last Monday in a surprise tweet that ignited a frenzy of

fear in immigrant communities nationwide and drew criticism from law enforcement and elected officials in California, New York and other states. Then, in a move that has become a hallmark of his chaotic presidency, he reversed the plan in a tweet Saturday mere hours before the raids were set to begin Sunday. Trump tweeted that he had “delayed the Illegal Immigration Removal Process (Deportation) for two weeks to see if the Democrats and Republicans can get together and work out a solution to the Asylum and

Loophole problems at the Southern Border.” “If not, Deportations start!” he warned. In his tweet, Trump said “Democrats” had asked him to hold off on the raids. According to a person familiar with the call, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called Trump on Friday night and asked him to call off the raids. They spoke for about 10 minutes. Democratic lawmakers celebrated the decision. In a tweet, Pelosi wrote that the delay “is

Trump’s 11th-hour reversal and warning to Democrats mirrored his strategy earlier this month to push the Mexican government to launch a crackdown on Central American migrants passing through that country en route to the U.S., postponing for 45 days his threat to impose tariffs. Since the June 7 agreement, Mexican troops have deployed on the country’s borders and arrested more migrants. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

After early exit from the 2016 Olympics, coach was tasked with restructuring team WORLD CUP The U.S. women’s national soccer team humming through the World Cup is notable for boundless depth, waves of first-class forwards and hearty experience. There are famous players, rising figures and an unapologetic swagger that irks opponents. But behind the scenes — quietly, firmly and armed with a dry sense of humor while her band stacks up goals, victories and endorsements — coach Jill Ellis has helped define the world’s top-ranked team. In charge since May 2014, Ellis will equal April Heinrichs’ program record for matches coached (124) today when the Americans play Spain in the round of 16 in Reims, France. She is the only woman to guide the United States to a World Cup title. If she were to repeat the feat July 7 in Lyon, Ellis would become the first person to coach a team to two World Cup crowns since Vittorio Pozzo led the Italian men to glory in 1934 and 1938. Expectations surrounding the U.S. juggernaut are stratospheric. As forward Carli Lloyd said last week, “Anything less [than a championship] is considered a failure in everyone’s eyes.” If the U.S. falls short, Ellis

would receive a large share of the blame, despite a 98-7-18 overall record going into today’s game. Even if the United States triumphs again, Ellis might decide to leave for fresh opportunities. Given her experience and success, she would certainly draw interest from national federations and clubs in Europe upgrading their women’s operations. “The résumé speaks for itself,” defender Ali Krieger said. Ellis, 52, is English by birth but moved with her family to Northern Virginia as a teenager. Her father, John, was a well-traveled coach who contributed to the rise of youth soccer in the D.C. area. Jill starred at Fairfax’s Robinson Secondary School, Braddock Road Youth Club and William & Mary before entering the coaching profession. She was an NCAA assistant at Maryland and Virginia, and head coach at Illinois and UCLA. “To be in the position I am in, I truly think if I had stayed in England, I am not sure I would be in coaching,” she said. “At the time, it was not even a career path; it was a rare career path in the States.” After the 2016 Olympics disappointment, Ellis restructured the roster, instituting a three-player front line supported by three

France survived a tense extra-time knockout match against Brazil and advanced to the quarterfinals when Amandine Henry, above right, redirected Amel Majri’s free kick for a tiebreaking goal in the 107th minute of a 2-1 victory Sunday. midfielders with an emphasis on playing fast, attractive soccer. Julie Ertz, a back-line stalwart, transitioned to defensive midfield. Crystal Dunn shifted from attacker to left back. Lloyd, hero of the 2015 final, took a reserve role. Young players, such as the Washington Spirit’s Mallory Pugh and Rose Lavelle, were integrated. Now the U.S. is a surging unit at a peak moment: nine consecutive victories and seven straight shutouts. After deploying everyone on the roster in the group stage, except the two backup goalkeepers, and starting just three players in all three games, Ellis will bring a fresh squad to Stade AugusteDelaune. It’s also a set of players who have embraced her plan and committed to the mission. “The players have stood a tough test,” she said. “It’s like comparing children, in terms of [U.S.] teams, but the qualities of this team are pretty special.” STEVEN GOFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Johan Camargo delivered a two-run, pinch-hit homer off Tanner Rainey, above, in the 10th inning Sunday and the visiting Braves beat the Nationals 4-3. Juan Soto homered for the Nationals, who have lost two in a row following a five-game win streak. Unbeaten since April 18 and sporting an 8-1 record, Atlanta’s Mike Soroka threw two scoreless innings before being struck in the right arm by a pitch from Austin Voth in the third. Soroka was removed from the game as a precaution. Voth, recalled from Double-A Harrisburg before the game, gave up two runs and four hits in six innings. In his third career start, the rookie notched seven strikeouts. Victor Robles wasn’t in Washington’s starting lineup but pinch hit in the sixth inning after leaving Saturday’s game due to dehydration. (AP)

Japan’s basketball community glows WIZARDS The Japanese basketball community erupted in excitement as the Wizards chose Gonzaga’s Rui Hachimura with the No. 9 pick Thursday, making him the first person from Japan chosen in the first round of the NBA draft. “Rui is just a huge game-

changer,” said Chris Sasaki, a basketball analyst who played in a Japanese pro league. Only two Japanese players have appeared in the NBA regular season: Yuta Tabuse for Phoenix in 2004-05 and Yuta Watanabe, who debuted for Memphis last season. Tabuse told Nikkan Sports that to have a first-round pick from Japan was a “near miracle.” Watanabe, a former George Washington star, said “this will

Capitals draft 18-year-old Canadian center McMichael

Delle Donne leads Mystics past Dream with 21 points

Murray wins doubles title in miracle injury comeback

With the 25th pick in the draft, the Capitals on Friday chose center Connor McMichael, 18. The Canadian McMichael is coming off a breakout season, recording 36 goals and 36 assists in 67 games for the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights, coached by Dale Hunter, who played 12 seasons with the Capitals. McMichael (5-foot-11, 174 pounds) is expected to play with the Knights next season and potentially the one after that, too. He patterned his game after Sean Monahan and Bo Horvat. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Elena Delle Donne scored eight of her 21 points in a game-changing 14-0 run to start the second half and the Mystics rolled to an 89-73 win over the Atlanta Dream on Sunday. Kristi Toliver and reserve Tianna Hawkins added 17 points apiece for the Mystics (7-3), who won their third straight on a four-game road trip. Delle Donne also had 10 rebounds. Toliver hit three 3s, pushing her career total to 581, ninth in league history. Tiffany Hayes led the Dream (2-7) with 18 points. Washington, the league’s leader in points (85.6) and 3s per game (9.13), shot 46% overall and made 10 of 29 3-pointers. (AP)

Britain’s Andy Murray completed a fairytale return from hip surgery by winning the Queen’s Club doubles title with Feliciano Lopez, who ended Sunday with two titles after earlier winning the singles title as well. The Spaniard is the first man to win both titles at the grass-court tournament in London since Mark Philippoussis in 1997. Murray and Lopez defeated Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury 7-6 (6), 5-7, 10-5 in the doubles final — not long after Lopez outlasted Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2) in singles. Murray, 32, capped a remarkable week 146 days after undergoing what he hopes was career-saving hip surgery. (AP)

Co-creator and star Jason Jones runs away from conventional family drama on TBS’ “The Detour”

On the road less taken

A typical family goes on an atypical journey in the TBS comedy series ‘The Detour’

TELEVISION The fourth season of “The Detour” debuted last week, with things getting increasingly outrageous since the show premiered in 2016. The TBS comedy follows a family of four that went on vacation and unintentionally found themselves on the run from the law, after which the plot became far too twisty and convoluted (for comedic effect) to spell out entirely. When star Natalie Zea hears that a reporter has binged the new season in two sittings, she quips, “That’s a lot of ‘Detour’ at once. Are you OK?” That might make the sitcom sound like shock comedy, but it’s actually one of the most profamily stories that exists in a television landscape peppered with

murdered women, disaffected sex and ruthless power-grabbing. Every horrid situation that arises — from faked deaths to so many bloody noses to a cavalcade of broken international laws — is, in the end, about the central characters attempting to remain the close-knit family that they are. “When we got into this, the network really wanted this family comedy. But I had not a lot of interest in making a traditional family comedy,” says star and co-creator Jason Jones, who envisioned a show that would propel a family “into pure chaos” — to “bend a family as far as you can without breaking it.” Ruining a family isn’t funny, but as the past three seasons demonstrate, it can be pretty

A true family affair “The Detour” is a family-run show — co-created and written by star Jason Jones and his wife, Samantha Bee, with whom he also has worked on “The Daily Show” and “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee.” Bee’s involvement has led to a perception from some that the show leans left, but Jones says he finds “liberals just as fun to make fun of.” T.M.A.

hilarious to put one under a tremendous amount of stress. “The family has this loving bond, and they can fight and bicker, but that fab four are kind of unbreakable,” Jones says. The new season finds husband Nate (Jones), wife Robin (Zea)

and son Jared (Liam Carroll) looking for daughter Delilah (Ashley Gerasimovich), who has run away and become a social media star, posting videos of herself dancing at various locales around the globe. Her family chases her from Paraguay (where they stumble upon a drug cartel’s hideout ringed with heads on sticks) to Tibet and Japan. Though it may sound either dark or dumb, “The Detour” is one of the funniest shows on TV — and, strangely, it’s also one of the more introspective ones. “I think if you have an honesty and respect for character — in this case the character being the family — you can go anywhere with them,” Jones says.

BOX OFFICE HAUL

“Toy Story 4” brought the domestic box office to life with a $118 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, but the Pixar film’s belowexpectations debut didn’t quell continuing concerns about a rocky summer movie season. The film, which had been projected to make $140 million-plus, still ranks as the fourth-highest animated movie opening ever. The weekend’s No. 2 film, the horror remake “Child’s Play,” also opened below expectations with $14.1 million. Older priest Father Francisco is jealous of popular Father Anthony, whom he calls “pious, young and hot,” and whose lips he describes as “so glossy.” To bolster his image, Father Francisco hires a gang of oddballs with a knack for creating horror movie props to stage an exorcism. He figures if he can drive out (fake) evil spirits,

he’ll be a star and Father Anthony will be forgotten. That cuckoo plot is the kickoff for “Los Espookys,” a six-episode HBO comedy (11 p.m. Fridays). Its co-creators (and stars) are three humorists with Latinx roots. Julio Torres, a “Saturday Night Live” writer and Salvadoran emigre, plays blue-haired, moody chocolate heir Andrés. Panamanian American Ana Fabrega, a rising comic, is the

A scary good time: HBO’s ‘Espookys’ is absurdist fun

“Los Espookys” actor Fred Armisen plays a parking attendant who helps create horror scenarios in his spare time. You know, that old archetype.

“indestructible,” deadpan Tati. Ubiquitous “Portlandia” and “SNL” alumnus Fred Armisen, whose mother is Venezuelan, is

Uncle Tico, unparalleled when it comes to parking cars. All of them deliver their lines in Spanish (with subtitles).

Jill Soloway replaces Bryan Singer as “Red Sonja” director

Clearly, this is a strange brew of a show. Yet it’s an absolute delight. The humor is absurd and sly. And the band of misfits are weirdly likable and awesomely talented. Thrilled with the success of their ersatz exorcism, they start a business creating horror scenarios for clients into supernaturalism. The show has a deeper side as well. You may find yourself pondering important questions, like why are people so willing to believe the unbelievable? Then again, you might just wonder: How does Father Anthony get his lips so glossy?
