British police received a call on their 999 emergency line last week from a resident reporting that 91-year-old Queen Elizabeth II was not wearing her seat belt during an appearance at the opening of Parliament. Traveling in a vehicle without a seat belt usually results in a fine, but the queen is immune from prosecution. Police warned the public that the 999 number is not meant to be used as a joke, UPI reported. (EXPRESS)

A Kentucky hamlet has, for the fourth time, elected a dog as mayor. Jordie Bamforth said her 3-year-old pit bull, Brynneth Pawltro, beat a cat, a chicken and a donkey, among others, last week to be next mayor of Rabbit Hash (pop. 315), 78 miles north of Lexington. Bobbi Kayser of the town’s Historical Society said the election started in the 1990s as a fundraiser. “We charge you a dollar for your vote,” she said. “You vote as often as you want.” (AP)

Activists are collecting funds to repair a penisshaped rock formation in southern Norway after the tourist attraction was found badly damaged. Joggers discovered Saturday that the Trollpikken formation had broken off, and they noted drilling holes in the rock, strongly suggesting vandalism. By Sunday, more than 500 people had donated nearly 90,000 Norwegian kroner ($10,600) to fix the formation south of Stavanger. (AP)

Small frame, big appetite GERMANTOWN, MD. Juliet Lee, barely 5-foot-5 and a mere 100 pounds, doesn’t just have a knack for eating hot dogs — she’s one of the best in the world at it. Saturday in D.C., the 52-yearold Germantown hair salon owner displayed her talents as one of 10 participants in this year’s D.C. qualifier for the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, N.Y. But Lee wasn’t feeling the weight of the moment. “I like to eat and I have fun,” said Lee, the 11th-highest-ranked major-league eater in the world. “I don’t try to put too much pressure on myself.” Lee has been a professional eater for 11 years. She made her jump into the sport when she saw a competitive eating competition on TV and immediately decided she wanted to give it a try. She won her first amateur competition in August 2006, downing 11 slices of pizza in 10 minutes. “It gave me more confidence,” said Lee, a mother of two daughters in their 20s.

Since then, Lee has been in more than 100 competitive eating contests. She’s downed six dozen clams in six minutes, 13.23 pounds of cranberry sauce in eight minutes and 165 Peeps in five minutes, among other things. But so far, her favorite contest was in April 2008, when she ate 32 dozen oysters in eight minutes. “I think I just like seafood,” said Lee. While other competitors often wait around for the contest to begin, Lee goes through a routine of stretches that show off her impressive flexibility as well as keep her loose and relaxed. On Saturday, all of Lee’s precompetition techniques proved to be her secret to success. Three minutes in, she had already eaten 15 hot dogs. By the time the final horn sounded, Lee was declared the winner for the women, having consumed 28 hot dogs — only two shy of her goal. “I can do better,” said Lee, as she walked off the stage with a hot dog in one hand, her trophy in the other. “I know I can.” While Lee didn’t achieve her goal, she said she will push herself to get ready for her 11th straight trip to the Finals at Coney Island. Just not quite yet. She has a hair salon to run, workouts to get in and her everyday life to manage. But come July 4, eating hot dogs will again be at the top of her busy to-do list. Great white spotted along Virginia shore A great white shark that’s 14 feet, 2 inches long and weighs about 2,300 pounds was spotted about 10 miles off one of Virginia’s Eastern Shore barrier islands. A “ping” from equipment that is attached to the shark — which has been tagged and named Katharine by a research group called Ocearch — was detected Sunday afternoon, showing that she was about 10 miles off Cobb Island, just east of Oyster, a small town in Virginia. A few weeks ago, she pinged about 80 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. (TWP)

Eulalio Tordil fatally shot his estranged spouse, then killed 2 strangers

NASA puts off rocket launch for 10th time ALEX BRANDON (AP)

MARYLAND A Maryland man who went on a shooting rampage that left two strangers dead after he fatally shot his wife in the parking lot of a high school last year pleaded guilty to murder Monday. The plea Eulalio Tordil, 63, entered in Prince George’s County Circuit Court in the slaying of his wife comes two months after the former Federal Protective Service Officer was convicted in the fatal shooting of two strangers as he attempted to steal a vehicle in neighboring Montgomery County. On May 5, 2016, Tordil confronted his wife, Gladys Tordil, 44, in the parking lot of High Point High School in Beltsville, where she was picking up her daughters. After an argument, Tordil shot his wife in front of his stepdaughters and fled the scene. “I pulled my gun and started shooting,” Tordil wrote in a journal entry that was made public at his plea hearing in Montgomery County in May, “shot Gladys several times in the upper body/ head. Left the scene.” Two months before the shooting, Gladys Tordil, a chemistry teacher at Clarksburg High School, had filed a restraining order alleging her husband abused

her and her daughters. He hit her and threatened to hurt her if she left him, she said in court documents. And he forced her children to do push-ups or locked them in a dark closet as a form of punishment, she accused. A judge granted the restraining order that required Eulalio Tordil to turn over his weapons to authorities, but he kept one gun that law enforcement didn’t know about. The day after his wife’s shooting, Eulalio Tordil terrorized the region after fatally shooting Malcom “Mike” Winffel and Claudina Molina in busy shopping centers in Montgomery County. Tordil shot both as he was trying to steal vehicles in an attempt to thwart police efforts

to track him. The shooting rampage stoked panic and locked down schools in a region that was terrorized by the Beltway Sniper attacks in 2002. During one of the failed carjacking attempts, Tordil lost his eyeglasses, keeping him from going far before police took him into custody. Tordil faces up to four life sentences without the possibility of parole in Montgomery County for the killings of Winffel and Molina. He is scheduled to be sentenced in those cases July 7. He faces a maximum of life without parole in the killing of his wife and is scheduled to be sentenced in Prince George’s County on Sept. 6. LYNH BUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A rocket launch scheduled for the NASA site on Virginia’s Eastern Shore has been postponed 10 times this month, hinting at the hazards involved in rocket science. The latest delay was reported Friday, when the space agency said the launch of its Terrier-Improved Malemute sounding rocket, which had been scheduled for Saturday, was again put off. NASA said it was because of expected cloud cover. The rocket was to be sent up from the Wallops Flight Facility to support ionospheric research by creating luminescent chemical clouds at that lofty level of the atmosphere, 46 or more miles above Earth. The clouds would be visible along much of the Eastern Seaboard. A new launch date has not been set, NASA said. (TWP)

local Transit agency notes that it overcharged for some of its trips TRANSPORTATION A Metro news release distributed over the weekend reminded riders of the fare and schedule changes that went into effect Sunday. Subheads detailed new service levels on the rails, changes to bus schedules and fare increases, all of which riders have particularly bemoaned given three major service disruptions over four days. Those reading through the

release might have called it quits near the bottom after a mention of a 10-cent parking fee increase at most stations. And perhaps that’s what Metro was hoping for when it decided to tuck in a “Technical correction to fare tables” at the bottom of the release. The notice — printed in size 12 font, according to an app that measures font size — said fewer than 5 percent of riders had been charged incorrect fares for at least the last three years, with some being overcharged, and others being undercharged. Dwarfed by size 16 print of the information

up top, the tiny paragraph said the net effect of the errors meant Metro undercharged customers about $124,000 in a year. The good news is that SmarTrip card holders affected by any net overcharges over $2 between 2015 and 2017 will be issued an automatic credit this summer. There was no mention of those who had been undercharged being fined for the glitch. The last section of the release encouraged riders with questions to call Metro customer service at 202-637-7000. How tech has muddled our views on tips BUSINESS Uber’s surprise decision last week to allow tipping is the latest twist in the nation’s conflicted and often ambivalent attitude toward paying just a little more for good service. The restaurant industry has seen a push by some toward no-tip policies, with mixed results. New technology and changing views about which jobs qualify for tips have further clouded the propriety of a gratuity. “Right now, it’s gotten very strange in the world of tipping,” said Michael McCall, a hospitality-business professor at Michigan State University. “Everyone is trying different things.” Lyft, Uber’s chief ride-hailing competitor, has for years boasted of its willingness to encourage customers to tip drivers, attempting to draw a cuddly contrast with Uber’s colder, more datadriven ways. But Uber, which had resisted tipping for years, had defended its previous decision as being in the interest of both riders and drivers, who, the company said, should “know for sure what they would pay or

earn on each trip — without the uncertainty of tipping.” Deciding when to tip has become harder with the rise of mobile technologies that act as a pass-through between customer and server. Grubhub, which coordinates deliveries of takeout food, put out a cheat sheet for users explaining when to tip and reminding customers that although computers handle the transaction, a person still has to make and deliver the food. Technology also has helped servers earn more tips, thanks to payment systems such as Square and ShopKeep that present customers with the option to select suggested tip amounts ranging from 15 to 25 percent with just the tap of a finger. The option of “no tip” is often set off to the side, as if with disdain. The role of tipping has been most fiercely debated in the U.S. restaurant industry, where an estimated $40 billion in tips trade hands each year. The most vocal proponent of no tipping is New York City restaurateur Danny Meyer, who in late 2015 instituted the policy at his collection of high-end restaurants, including Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe and the Modern. Menu prices were raised 20 to 30 percent as a result. Meyer

Imprisoned Chinese Nobel Peace Prize laureate and dissident Liu Xiaobo has been moved to a hospital after being diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer, his former lawyer said Monday. Liu was diagnosed May 23 and given a medical parole. China’s rights activists called the diagnosis for China’s best-known political prisoner a blow to the democracy movement. Liu, 61, was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009 after being convicted of inciting state subversion for writing and disseminating a manifesto calling for an end to single-party rule. Uber’s about-face is the latest twist in a big rethink about gratuities

CHINA

argued that tipping reflected an antiquated system. He said his policy was necessitated by fairness, because kitchen staff did not always share in a customer’s generosity. Although Meyer has stood by his no-tip policy, others have backed off their attempts to go gratuity-free. Joe’s Crab Shack became the first national chain to try it, in 2015, raising menu prices and eliminating tips. The experiment lasted six months. Executives said customers didn’t like it, and restaurant traffic plummeted. Earlier this month, the company behind Joe’s Crab Shack filed for bankruptcy protection. Melissa Leonard, an etiquette and protocol expert in New York

City, said the new business models have made tipping more complicated. Most people learned tipping practices from watching their parents as they were growing up. But Uber didn’t exist a decade ago. Uber seemed like a taxi service, but until this week, tipping in the app was nearly impossible. Leonard sees tipping as a way to say “thank you.” Today, the normal tip for good service is 20 percent, she said, with 15 percent for service that was OK and 10 percent if it was lacking. “We are in a world that’s very service-oriented,” she said, “and you hope to get a good outcome when you tip.” TODD C. Trump claims ‘victory’ Supreme Court allows a limited version of the president’s travel ban to take effect Supreme Court to hear religion, gay rights case

ERIC THAYER (GETTY IMAGES)

COURTS The Supreme Court is allowing the Trump administration to go forward with a limited version of its ban on travel from six mostly Muslim countries, a victory for President Trump in the biggest legal controversy of his young presidency. The justices will hear full arguments in October in the case, which has stirred emotions across the nation. In the meantime, the court said Monday that Trump’s ban on visitors from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen can be enforced if those visitors lack a “credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity” in the United States. Trump said last week that the ban would take effect 72 hours after being cleared by courts. The administration has said the 90-day ban was needed on national security grounds to allow an internal review of screening procedures for visa applicants from the six countries. Opponents say the ban is unlawful, based on visitors’ Muslim religion. The administration review should be complete before Oct. 2, the first day the justices could hear arguments in their new term. A 120-day ban on refugees also is being allowed to take effect on a limited basis. Three of the court’s conservative justices said they would have let the complete bans take effect. Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch, said the government has shown it is likely to succeed on the merits of the case, and that it will suffer irreparable harm with any interference. Thomas said the government’s interest in preserving national security outweighs any hardship to people denied entry into the country. Some immigration lawyers said

The Supreme Court said that people from six mostly Muslim countries who lack ties to the U.S. may be barred.

the limited nature of the ban and the silence of the court’s liberals on the issue Monday suggested that the court had not handed Trump much of a victory. They said relatively few people would fall under the ban because many people coming to study, work or visit family members in the U.S. have sufficient relationships with others already in the country. Trump, however, hailed the high court’s order as a “clear victory for our national security.” He said in a statement that his “number one responsibility” is to keep the American people safe. The court’s opinion explained the kinds of relationships people from the six countries must demonstrate to obtain a U.S. visa. “For individuals, a close familial relationship is required,” the court said. For people who want to come to the U.S. to work or study, “the relationship must be formal, documented and formed in the ordinary course, not for the purpose

Missouri church case The Supreme Court ruled Monday that churches have the same right as other charitable groups to seek state money for new playground surfaces and other nonreligious needs. But the justices stopped short of saying whether the ruling applies to school voucher programs that use public funds to pay for private, religious schooling. after setbacks in court. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond said the ban was “rooted in religious animus” toward Muslims and pointed to Trump’s campaign promise to impose a ban on Muslims entering the country as well as tweets and remarks he has made since becoming president. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the travel policy does not comply with federal immigration law, including a prohibition on nationality-based discrimination. Trump’s first executive order on travel applied to travelers from Iraq as well as the six countries, and took effect immediately, causing chaos and panic at airports over the last weekend in January, as the Department of Homeland Security scrambled to figure out whom the order covered and how it was to be implemented. A federal judge blocked it eight days later. MARK SHERMAN (AP)

COURTS A Colorado clash between gay rights and religion started as an angry Facebook posting about a wedding cake but now has big implications for antidiscrimination laws in 22 states. Baker Jack Phillips is challenging a Colorado law that says he was wrong to have turned away a same-sex couple who wanted a cake to celebrate their 2012 wedding. The justices said Monday they will consider Phillips’ case, which could affect all states. Twentytwo states include sexual orientation in anti-discrimination laws that bar discrimination in public accommodations. Phillips argues that he turned away Charlie Craig and David Mullins not because they are gay, but because their wedding violated Phillips’ religious beliefs. After the couple was turned away in 2012, they complained about Masterpiece Cakeshop on Facebook, then filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The state sided with the couple. The decision to take on the case reflects renewed energy among the high court’s conservative justices, bolstered by Justice Neil Gorsuch. The Colorado case could settle challenges from at least a half-dozen other artists in the wedding industry who are challenging laws in other states requiring them to produce work for same-sex ceremonies. ST. ANTHONY, MINN. The mother of Philando Castile, a black motorist killed by a Minnesota police officer last July, has reached a nearly $3 million settlement with the city that employed the officer, avoiding a federal wrongful-death lawsuit that attorneys said could have taken years to resolve. The settlement to be paid to Valerie Castile, who is the family’s trustee, was announced Monday and comes less than two weeks after officer Jeronimo Yanez, 29, was acquitted of manslaughter and other charges

connected to her son’s death. Castile, a 32-year-old elementary school cafeteria worker, was shot five times by Yanez during a traffic stop after Castile told the officer he was armed. Castile had a permit for his gun. The shooting gained widespread attention after Castile’s girlfriend, who was in the car with her then-4-year-old daughter, livestreamed its gruesome aftermath on Facebook. The $2.995 million settlement for Valerie Castile will be paid by the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust, which holds the insurance policy for the city of St. Anthony. Robert Bennett, an attorney for Valerie Castile, said a decision was made to move expeditiously

rather than have the case drawn out in federal court, a process he said would “exacerbate and reopen terrible wounds.”

Bennett said Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, is not part of the settlement. She has also hired an attorney, but it’s not clear if she is planning a lawsuit or has any standing for a federal claim. Reynolds’ attorney did not return messages Monday. During his trial, Yanez testified that Castile ignored his commands not to pull out his gun and that Yanez feared for his life. According to squad car video that captured the shooting, Castile said, “I’m not pulling it out” before Yanez fired seven rapid shots. Castile’s last words after the shooting were, “I wasn’t reaching ...” Reynolds later said Castile was reaching for his wallet. The squad car video was inconclusive. AMY FORLILTI (AP)

Millennials love public libraries

A new analysis of Pew Research Center data from last fall found that 53 percent of millennials (ages 18-35) used a public library in the previous 12 months, more than any other generation. One reason Pew cites is the addition of computers and internet connections at libraries, as well as tech demos and community events. (EXPRESS)

GUATAPE, COLOMBIA | A boat rushes toward the sinking El Almirante ferry at a reservoir in Guatape on Sunday. The tourist ferry, carrying more than 150 passengers, sank in the reservoir near Medellin, killing at least seven. Scuba divers Monday searched for nine people still missing in the frigid, algae-filled waters around the wreckage. It’s unclear what caused the boat to sink and if the company that owned the boat was negligent.

TRENDS Julia Files, Anita Mayer and Sharonne Hayes, physicians at the Mayo Clinic, started seeing a pattern: When their male colleagues were introduced, they were usually called “Doctor.” But the men introduced female doctors by their first names. The trio studied speaker introductions at “grand rounds” — events where doctors and researchers present medical problems and treatments for discussion. Their research showed that women were less likely than men to be introduced by a professional title when men did the introducing. The study, published in the Journal of Women’s Health, looked at videos of 321 speaker introductions at 124 internal medicine grand rounds from 2012 through 2014 at Mayo Clinic campuses in Arizona and Minnesota. The results showed that male introducers used professional titles for female doctors only 49 percent of the time on first reference, but introduced male doctors by their titles 72 percent of the time. Female introducers used titles for both male and female doctors more often than male introducers (96 percent of the time versus 66 percent of the time). “It gets down to perception of expertise, perception of competence,” said Files, the lead author. “Choices of words really impact women’s progress in careers.” JANICE NEUMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CBO: 22M more uninsured Number of uninsured would skyrocket Senate health care bill would reduce spending Under House bill: 51M 50M by $321B, report finds 50M POLITICS Senate Republicans’ bill to erase major parts of the Affordable Care Act would cause an estimated 22 million more Americans to be uninsured in the coming decade — roughly a million fewer than similar legislation recently passed by the House, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The forecast issued Monday by Congress’ nonpartisan budget scorekeepers also estimates that the Senate measure, drafted in secret mainly by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and aides, would reduce federal spending by $321 billion by 2026 — compared with $119 billion for the House’s version. The CBO’s analysis had been awaited as a crucial piece of evidence as McConnell and other Republican leaders try to hurry a vote on the bill this week. But they are navigating an expanding minefield of resistance from their own party’s moderate and conservative wings, while Democrats are united against it. The additional deficit savings gives those leaders plenty of

room to add more spending to win votes from skeptical moderate Republicans like Sens. Dean Heller, Nev., Rob Portman, Ohio, and Bill Cassidy, La., who want more money and a dedicated fund to help treat opioid abuse. Senate budget rules require that the final legislation save at least $133 billion, more than was saved in the House bill, giving senators $188 billion to make the bill more palatable. Any extra spending risks alienating conservatives, however,

The increase would be larger among older people with lower income” — especially those 50 to 64 and with incomes below 200 percent of the poverty level, or around $30,300 for a single person. and could threaten a delicate balance McConnell must strike to win votes from at least 50 of the 52 Senate Republicans. McConnell said Monday that the legislation is an attempt at finding consensus among Republicans on how to fix health care. He urged a quick timeline for action but said the bill can still be changed ahead of a final vote. The figures come as President Trump, in a sharp pivot from the praise he initially lavished on the House bill, is urging the Senate to provide Americans more generous help with health insurance, calling the House version “mean.” The Senate’s bill would also reduce federal spending on subsidies for people who buy individual health insurance policies significantly more than the House’s version, cutting spending for tax credits by $408 billion by 2026. Despite uncertainties about how the bill’s moving parts would play out, the report says: “The amount of federal revenues collected and the amount of spending on Medicaid would almost surely both be lower than under current law. And the number of uninsured people under this legislation would almost surely be greater than under current law.” AMY GOLDSTEIN AND KELSEY SNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Kushner firm got $285M loan before election POLITICS One month before Election Day, Jared Kushner’s real estate company finalized a $285 million loan as part of a refinancing package for its property near Times Square in Manhattan. At the time, Kushner was playing a key role in the presidential campaign of his father-in-law, Donald Trump. The lender, Deutsche Bank, was negotiating to settle a federal mortgage fraud case and charges from New York state regulators that it aided a possible Russian money-laundering scheme. The cases were settled in December and January. Now, Kushner’s association with Deutsche Bank is among a number of financial matters that could come under focus as his business activities are reviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller, as part of a broader investigation into possible Russian influence in the election. The October deal illustrates the extent to which Kushner was balancing roles as a top adviser to Trump and a real estate company executive. After the election, Kushner juggled duties for the Trump transition team and his corporation as he prepared to move to the White House. Deutsche Bank loans to Trump and his family members have come under scrutiny. As Trump’s biggest lender, Trump’s companies had about $364 million in outstanding debts to the bank last year. Max deal for restricted free agent would trigger first tax for the Wizards NBA By the end of this week, the Wizards may dare to wander into new and exciting territory: that of the luxury tax. For years the Wizards have avoided the luxury tax line. Even in 2013 — when the team rewarded John Wall with a maximum extension — and last summer, when Bradley Beal earned a max contract, Washington remained under the tax penalty threshold. The Wizards are just one of three NBA teams that have never paid the tax, along with the Hornets and Pelicans. However, that may soon change. The 2017-18 salary cap is projected at $99 million, with the luxury tax line stretching to $119 million. Teams will be informed of the exact amounts Friday, the day before the start of free

agency, and Washington could become a taxpaying team if the market for restricted free agent Otto Porter Jr. demands it. Porter, 24, capped his careerbest season with averages of 13.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 43.4 percent shooting from the 3-point arc. Beginning July 1, Porter can listen to pitches from teams with cap space, and it’s widely believed he could command a max contract offer sheet. According to the salary cap projections, a four-year deal for Porter would start at $24.75 million a year. The Wizards would have 48 hours to match, and if they did so, the team would automatically vault over the luxury tax line. Excluding free agents, Washington has 12 players under contract with the team salary close to $96 million. “We’ll see how everything goes,” team president Ernie Grunfeld said last week. “If it’s the right player, I don’t think we have a problem going over it.” Considering how the Wizards

crow about their core, that “right player” would be Porter. The team believes with its four building blocks of Wall, Beal,

Porter and Markieff Morris that it can compete in the East and get over the second-round stumbling block. By keeping Porter, at least the foundation would remain intact. There’s also the matter of potentially re-signing reserve scorer Bojan Bogdanovic. And, while Washington flipped its 52nd draft pick into a serviceable backup point guard, Tim Frazier, the trade shouldn’t be considered a catchall solution to the team’s bench woes. It would be risky to stay with an inexperienced group of backups without supplementing it with at least one more veteran. CANDACE BUCKNER

According to a person familiar with the situation, the Nationals were close to a minor league deal with closer Francisco Rodriguez early Monday evening. Rodriguez, a six-time All-Star, was released by the Tigers after his season ERA climbed to 7.82. He could come cheap for a Nationals club that is desperate for bullpen help but always cost-conscious. He also comes with questions, like whether his high-80s fastball velocity is enough, and why his swingand-miss rate dropped dramatically this season, from 12 percent last year, to 9 percent this year. Rodriguez, 35, helped the Angels win a World Series as a rookie in 2002 and has also spent time with the Orioles, Brewers and Mets. CHELSEA JANES (TWP)

Trotz’s status still uncertain after ’18 Capitals coach enters final year of contract without an extension NHL The Capitals’ 2017-18 season opener is a little more than three months away, marking the fourth year of an era with both general manager Brian MacLellan and coach Barry Trotz. It also is the last season covered on Trotz’s contract, and MacLellan has said to this point that an extension still hasn’t been discussed. MacLellan said at the NHL draft in Chicago this weekend that the topic of an extension for Trotz could “maybe” come up later this summer. “We’re trying to get through the draft. ... We’ll see,” MacLellan said. When the GM was asked in May about an extension for Trotz, MacLellan said he needed to see evidence of improvements throughout the organization before that would be appropriate. In any sport, it’s an unusual practice to have a lame-duck coach, someone working on the last year of his deal. The perception is that management doesn’t have faith in the coach, and that uncertainty can bleed into other areas. Learning how to listen to your body’s hunger and satiety cues is a critical healthy-eating tool.

RECIPE FILE

THINKSTOCK

Milk with a berry twist

Maybe don’t finish that The Hunger Continuum can help you listen to the body’s cues before you’re stuffed PERSPECTIVE The most helpful healthy-eating tool isn’t about what or what not to eat — it’s about tapping into how hungry or full you feel. Learning (or relearning) how to listen and respond to your body’s hunger and satiety cues is an invaluable key to nourishing yourself well and avoiding overeating. It can help you find balance in any situation, from an ordinary Wednesday night to a weekend beach party. Healthy babies are born with fine-tuned hunger-satiety mechanisms. Whether they accept food and how much they eat are internally motivated — they feed when they are hungry and stop when they are satisfied. But as we grow up and begin to interface with the world, we are influenced more and more by external forces. Before long, these messages take over, and decisions about when and how much to eat become increasingly detached from our physical feelings. By the time we are adults, we

are well-practiced at ignoring our internal cues of hunger and fullness. We eat because we are compelled to finish what is heaped in front of us, because we “deserve” that doughnut after a long day’s work, because plowing through a bucket of popcorn is just what you do at the movies or because a TV ad sparks a chocolate craving. We also learn to ignore our genuine physical hunger as we accrue years of practice with restrictive diets that tell us our appetite is a beast we have to fight. When I was in private practice as a dietitian, I developed a tool called the Hunger Continuum (see box) to help my clients reconnect with and honor their internal sense of hunger and satisfaction. Many have told me it was the one thing that helped them the most — that no matter the circumstances, they were able to stay on a healthy track if they kept the Hunger Continuum in mind. All it requires is that you stop,

The Hunger Continuum 1 Famished 2 Uncomfortably hungry 3 Strong feelings of hunger 4 First signs of hunger 5 Neutral (neither hungry nor full) 6 Nearly full 7 Comfortably full 8 Very full 9 Stuffed 10 Painfully stuffed

check in with yourself and assign a number to how hungry or satisfied you are on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is “famished,” 10 is “painfully stuffed” and 5 is a neutral point of balance. The goal is to stay toward the middle of the scale, between 3, where you have strong but not overwhelming feelings of hunger, and 7, where you are full, but not very full. To do this, you need to listen to your body, eat when you feel genuine hunger — not bored hunger,

lonely hunger or stressed-out hunger — and stop eating when you are satisfied but not stuffed. It might take some practice. But even if you are not exactly sure where you are on the scale, stopping to check in can help. It’s best to eat when you reach a 3 — letting your appetite build past those first stirrings of hunger but satisfying it before you become ravenous. It’s not always possible to hit that mark — sometimes you don’t have control over when you are able to eat — but you can set up your routine to make it easier to achieve. The other side of the spectrum, perhaps more critical for most of us, is knowing when to stop eating. Make sure you eat slowly to give your stomach a chance to tell your brain it has had enough. As you eat, pause to check in periodically to recognize how your satiety is building, and stop eating when you reach a 7 on the continuum — comfortably full but not very full. He keeps cooking. We keep gagging. Q. How do you handle someone who thinks he is a great cook and is actually not at all? My neighbor always wants to host us at his house, with big gatherings of our families, but my husband and I and our kids can’t stand his cooking. It is always bland or burned or just downright awful. We value hanging out with this family and I don’t want things to get weird. GOOD NEIGHBOR, BUT … The good news is that neighborly gatherings lend themselves well to a potluck mentality. Take on the persona of someone who never comes empty-handed to a social event — and wow, how generous that the dishes you bring are a little more substantial than the typical offering! If he objects or tells you not to bother, you can say, “You always do so much;

I don’t want you to be the only one exerting effort,” and you can also increase the invites to your house as well. If you’re not one for cooking, there is always that “great new takeout place you’ve been dying to try” and that you insist on bringing food from. Of course, initiating more activities with them that are not food-based could help keep the friendship’s foundation strong.

The end of a 60-year relationship is a big deal, no matter how much it was for the better. My advice? “Fake it till you make it.” The strong, mature woman you want to be: What would she do in this situation? Rehearse it. Come up with different scenarios that might arise, from the civil to the Real Housewivesworthy, and develop scripts in your mind for what you would do. The less engagement, the better, so also refine your noncommittal nods, your mild smiles and your ability to walk away without it being outright aggressive. Consider enlisting a trusted friend to run interference and be an extra support. Don’t make it a referendum about who you are. It’s simply a role you have to perform to get through a difficult situation, and the more you’ve done it, the easier it will get. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of “Psychology: Essential Thinkers, Classic Theories, and How They Inform Your World.”

entertainment MUSIC

From left: Ansel Elgort, Jamie Foxx, Eiza Gonzalez and Jon Hamm sync up in “Baby Driver.”

COLUMBIA PICTURES

Remy Ma bests Nicki Minaj at BET Awards

Chained to the rhythm Director Edgar Wright let the music map out scenes for ‘Baby Driver’ FILM One of the best moments in “Baby Driver” came about because director Edgar Wright got something wrong. The heist movie, which opens Wednesday, centers around Baby (Ansel Elgort), a getaway driver working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey). To overcome his tinnitus, Baby is constantly plugged into music; his dangly white earbuds are as much a part of him as his ability to spin a car around a corner. Wright, the visionary behind “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Shaun of the Dead,” decided to set much of the movie to music — not just in the sense of a traditional soundtrack, but in that the visuals of the film would exactly match the beats of the songs pumping through

Baby’s head. That meant almost everything had to be painstakingly choreographed. Though Wright sometimes even painstaking isn’t careful enough. For the film’s second car chase, Wright storyboarded the scene and edited it to the frenzied rhythm of The Damned’s 1977 punk-rock blast “Neat Neat Neat” — all 2½ minutes of it. “Once I’d cut the whole sequence, I remembered that my director of photography had said, ‘Oh, you haven’t left enough time for the action — you’re going to run out of song.’ I did not heed his advice, and of course he was 100 percent correct.” So now Wright had too much movie, but he refused to substitute a longer song or give up his music-fueled idea. “In that sequence, there was a moment where they have to

abandon their car and get into a new one,” he says. “So on the last day of shooting, I added a shot where Ansel rewinds the song back to the last verse before playing it again. It was exactly what the character would do in that moment if his perfect getaway had been ruined — when he gets into a new car, he literally gets back on track by rewinding it.” The ambitious syncing of soundtrack to action was tough, but it focused Wright’s direction — and gave him a concrete idea of when and how to end each scene. Knowing that no scene could be longer than its song kept things manageable. “The opening sequence [a car chase set to The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s ‘Bellbottoms’] was extremely complicated,” Wright says, “but at least you knew at the end of the day it was going to be exactly five minutes long.”

Remy Ma has ended rival Nicki Minaj’s seven-year winning streak at the 2017 BET Awards. Ma, who was released from prison in 2014 after serving six years on assault charges, on Sunday won best female hip-hop artist, an award Minaj had won since 2010. Ma last won the prize in 2005. In March, Ma released the hostile diss track “Shether,” aimed a Minaj, which earned praise from critics and rap fans. “I wanna thank God first and foremost,” Ma said in her acceptance speech. She also thanked her mentor Fat Joe and rapper-husband Papoose. “You can make mistakes and come back.” (AP)

Nintendo’s SNES Classic is coming this fall

Nintendo will release a miniature version of its SNES gaming console with preloaded fan favorites like “Super Mario World,” “Donkey Kong Country” and “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past,” the Japanese company announced Monday. The device comes with 21 titles (including never-before-released aircraft shooter “Star Fox 2”) and two controllers. It costs $80 and will hit stores on Sept. 29. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Spike Lee’s Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It,” based on his 1986 film, to debut Nov. 23

Netflix’s ‘Okja’ gives viewers a lot to digest FILM REVIEW Director Bong Joon-ho’s “Okja,” which hits Netflix on Wednesday after competing for the coveted Palme d’Or prize at the Cannes film festival last month, is a movie about a girl, her giant, adorable pet pig and an evil corporation that wants to separate them — and to separate the porcine heroine into bacon strips. The film centers on the fate of Okja, who was created by the malevolent Mirando Corp. Okja is a genetic freak made in a lab, one of two dozen giant miracle pigs with skin like an elephant, floppy ears and understanding eyes. The company, led by an icy Tilda Swinton, insists these beasts will reduce hunger and waste. When Okja is snatched, Mija (An Seo Hyun), the South Korean girl who raised the super pig, pursues her pet to New York. There are car chases, poo jokes and an unhinged Jake Gyllenhaal as a wildlife expert who has sold his soul to the evil corporation. Bong, who also wrote the story, created a film with echoes of a kid-animal flick — but “Okja” isn’t one. It has an inconsistent tone, with horrific moments spliced with satire and detours into vaudeville. It’s not clear what “Okja” is. It could be an indictment of capitalism, but business seems to win. It adores nature, but a lab-grown beast proves to be a playful heroine. It’s more like an interspecies love story, one that now makes ordering lunch hard. Bon appetit. MARK KENNEDY (AP)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You don’t want to find yourself engaged in anything that resembles “tit for tat,” as you’re likely to lose out in the end.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Is it true that you’ve drawn the short straw yet again? This may be a matter of perspective: Things are better than they seem. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You can do much to improve someone else’s day without doing anything to dampen your own spirits or limit your potential.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) It may be time for you to set aside a certain distraction in favor of an interest that can bring you money and prestige.

TODAY: A weak disturbance ripples by but, even so, the balance of the day is quite nice. We’ll have some sunnier intervals and cloudier intervals and the small chance of a few showers popping up —mainly in the afternoon and early evening. Whatever rain falls shouldn’t last long.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You know exactly what is expected of you, and you know exactly why you cannot fulfill that expectation. It’s a matter of principle. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Others are gravitating toward you for a number of reasons that you do not yet understand. For a time, you may feel overwhelmed.

T.J. Miller shed light on his exit from HBO’s “Silicon Valley” to The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not an actor; I’m a comedian,” he said. “I don’t know how the f--- I hoodwinked Hollywood into giving me a career in this. But I’m not sitting here saying, ‘I need more lines. I’m not funny enough.’ I’m not [‘Silicon’ co-star] Thomas Middleditch.” He also said the show was piling onto his hectic schedule: “People joke about it but I’m the hardest-working man in show business, maybe.” When asked if he spoke with showrunners Mike Judge or Alec Berg about the departure of his character, Erlich Bachman, Miller said, “I didn’t talk to Alec because I don’t like Alec.” (EXPRESS)

Lil’ Kim is reportedly a person of interest in a Los Angeles robbery, according to TMZ. Law enforcement sources said Kim rented a house before Sunday’s BET Awards, but wasn’t happy with it when she went to check it out. She demanded a refund, but didn’t get one and an argument ensued. Kim and her friends left. That night, a group in ski masks robbed the house, taking Kim’s deposit on the house and cash, totaling over $20,000. (EXPRESS)

Daniel Day-Lewis, who said last week that he is retiring from his acting career, is reportedly hoping to make a move toward couture fashion.
