A piano teacher in Selah, Wash., deserved the $40,000 she was awarded in a dispute with a neighbor who revved his truck engine for months to drown out the sound of her lessons, an appeals court ruled Tuesday. It started when Junghee Kim Spicer increased the number of lessons she gave. From November 2015 to March 2016, Paul Patnode parked his truck by her home, raced the engine and set off its alarm when students arrived. (AP)
A state audit says a county employee in Iowa who faked having an intern collected nearly $219,000 in improper payments. The report says Jodi Sutter was fired in February 2018 as Henry County’s environmental specialist after she was unable to produce documentation for expenses and admitted lying about having an intern for whom she sought reimbursements. Sutter has sued for wrongful termination and unpaid wages. (AP)
A cat named Meow was reunited with her owner in Gardner, Kan., three years after going missing. Meow escaped after Taylor Jezik moved. Jezik searched for her, posted photos online, called shelters and looked along roadsides. She says her son was devastated. On Tuesday, she got a text saying her cat had been found. Police said Meow was spotted after a storm and taken to an animal hospital, where they scanned her microchip. (AP)

‘Shark Tank’ for D.C. singles PowerPoints and pals are the catalyst for love at Pitch a Friend night
MICHAEL S. WILLIAMSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
THE DISTRICT “This is a single 27-year-old heterosexual male,” Sean Keller hollered to a crowd of 200 people Friday night at the bar Franklin Hall, in the U Street neighborhood. That heterosexual male was Chris Gillespie, who stood near his friend’s PowerPoint presentation, a wide smile plastered on his face. Gillespie figured the speech would be good, but he didn’t expect the photo of himself in a halfway buttoned-up shirt (“Chris isn’t afraid of a low V”), or the screenshot from his hacked Facebook account (“He’s so cultured that his hacked account got a job in Cairo”). The flattery went on and on, drawing casual laughs. But the goal wasn’t comedy. It was to get Gillespie a date (or dates) by the end of the night. His friends carefully curated each slide of their three-minute presentation, hoping someone in the crowd would find Gillespie attractive. The speech was part of Franklin Hall’s first Pitch a Friend

Tinder and similar dating apps have more matchmaking power than ever, as relationships are increasingly initiated online. Yet daters have always utilized their social circle, according to Jordana Abraham, co-founder of Ship, a dating app that lets users’ friends swipe and chat on their behalf. “For most people, their ideal
way to meet is in person — at a bar, a function or doing something they enjoy,” Abraham said. Olivia Duggan, a frequent patron at Franklin Hall, sent bar co-owner Peter Bayne the idea for Friday’s event months ago after her friends attended a similar event called DateMyFriend.ppt in Boston. “There’s nothing like a good friend who can reveal your idiosyncrasies,” Duggan said. Bayne said that finding dates via PowerPoint sounded suitable
for Washington, a city in which “everyone is Type A.” And it worked. Five different women approached Gillespie within minutes of the presentation. It may have helped that his friends had passed around a flier with tear-off strips with his phone number, conveniently leaving the last digit blank. “I mean, if you don’t meet anyone here, it’s a joke,” muttered one patron to his friend. “If you do, you can say it was something serious.” TERRY NGUYEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Hogan slams court decision POLITICS Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, R, vowed Thursday to keep pushing for independent redistricting reform in the state, putting him at odds with Democrats who control the legislature, after the Supreme Court declined to throw out the state’s congressional map. Hogan said he would reintroduce a bill calling for a nonpartisan commission to draw congressional districts, instead of the General Assembly, where Democrats hold veto-proof majorities in both chambers. But Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. said only a national solution will do, placing the onus on President Trump and Congress to create new rules. The high court reversed a 2018 order directing Maryland to redraw the 6th District, which stretches from conservative Western Maryland to liberal Montgomery County, before the 2020 election. Residents of the district had sued the state, arguing that the boundaries were unfairly
refashioned after the 2010 census to move Republican voters out and shift Democratic voters in. But the court said federal courts don’t have a role in deciding partisan gerrymandering claims. “Today’s ruling was terribly disappointing to all who believe in fair elections,” said Hogan. “I pledge to vigorously continue this fight, both in Maryland and across our nation. Gerrymandering is wrong, and both parties are guilty.” The decision makes it likely that the state’s majority party will retain the upper hand during the next redistricting, after the 2020 census. Miller, D-Calvert, maintained that the map in question was always constitutional. “The Supreme Court ruling only strengthens the need for Congress and the President to work together to create a set of rules across the country,” he said in a statement. Unlike in the 2011 redistricting, when Democratic governor Martin O’Malley’s objectives dovetailed with a legislature dominated by his party, lawmakers will have to contend with Hogan, who could veto maps he

deems unfair or too partisan. But the court’s ruling makes clear that partisanship is not grounds to declare a district illegal. And Democrats have the votes to override a gubernatorial veto. Advocates say they hope lawmakers will be less partisan while redistricting in the future, if only to avoid the wrath of antigerrymandering constituents. “There’s a lot of agreement that this has gotten ridiculous,” said Ashley Oleson, executive director of the Maryland chapter of the League of Women Voters. “They’re recognizing that people are really unhappy with the status quo.” JENNA PORTNOY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS D.C. government officials have lowered by nearly $16 million the revenue they estimate legalized sports gambling will generate over the next 15 months. Lawmakers passed a bill in December to legalize and regulate sports wagers. But they have not approved a contract for a company to run the operation. Beth Bresnahan, director of the D.C. Lottery, testified before a D.C. Council committee Wednesday that revenue projections have been revised downward, a recalculation she said was made at the end of February. A spokesman for the city’s chief financial officer said the District’s sports betting operation is now expected to earn just $750,000 during the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, and generate $17.1 million during the next fiscal year. Combined, that is a little over half the amount that Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey S. DeWitt originally estimated sports gambling would bring to D.C. over the same period. Bresnahan testified that the downsized projections stem from a delayed rollout for the gambling operation’s mobile app. As the council weighs approval of the contract — worth up to $215 million over five years — the shifting revenue estimates are fueling worries among lawmakers who say the city is rushing into a questionable deal. Private schools’ probe finds 16 ex-employees who harmed students EDUCATION An investigation by Washington National Cathedral and three affiliated District private schools corroborated allegations of sexual misconduct by 16 former employees involving students decades ago, officials said Thursday. A summary released by the
cathedral, St. Albans School, the National Cathedral School and the Beauvoir School said the investigation had substantiated allegations of misconduct mostly during the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s, with the most recent incident dating back 11 years. In a letter to parents, officials said no allegations involving current employees were found but that the investigation found “incidents from our past that are deeply troubling.”

The investigation was initiated by St. Albans in February after The Washington Post reported allegations that former teacher Vaughn Keith sexually abused a student at another private school

Investigators corroborated allegations against nine former St. Albans employees, two former Beauvoir employees, one former National Cathedral School employee and four adults associated with the cathedral, the summary said. According to the summary, investigators flagged behavior that either involved physical contact or other conduct that was sexual in nature and caused physical or emotional harm. Station mastery: Metro volunteer is at your service As she hurried around, most of the people around her were rushing to get on a train — or out of the station, trying to leave. The unlikely subject of the Holocaust came up when she was asked why. Why she, literally, volunteers to stand in a Metro station. In 1938, as the Nazis were invading Vienna, Melissa explained, 13-year-old Eva Susanne Tschelnitz and her family fled to England. Melissa’s father, Theodore, then 19 and still years from meeting Eva, also fled Vienna. But he and his family went to Memphis, where Theodore was drafted into the Army. The war took him to England, where he met a woman from his hometown. They fell in love, married and moved back to Memphis. “Can you imagine the culture shock of moving to Memphis?” Melissa said of her mother. Eva Pollak liked to take the bus around Memphis, bringing her daughter along with her. “I think having moved to new countries at a very young age, she had to be very independent,” Melissa said. Melissa continued to ride buses and trains when she moved to Washington to attend American University, and then throughout her career as a senior analyst at the National Science Foundation. “I inherited this gene from my mother where I’ve always been pro public transportation,” she said as an explanation for why she was there. After she retired, she heard

Even as she talked about the Holocaust with a reporter at the Rosslyn station Wednesday afternoon, the woman in the blue “Metro Volunteer Person” vest kept scanning the fare machines nearby. Suddenly, Melissa Pollak darted off toward a man at one of the machines. To the untrained eye, he showed no obvious sign of distress. “When you’ve been doing this for as long as I have, you can tell the signs,” she said after helping the tourist load his SmarTrip card. The machine had been asking the man if he wanted a receipt, she said. It only does that when someone is using a credit card. But the man had cash in his hand. It was hot at the station. For an hour she’d been helping people figure out the wonky machines or explaining other quirks of the system, like how going to D.C. involves getting on a train headed for places called New Carrollton and Largo Town Center. Beads of sweat were forming on her forehead. It looked like there’d be better places to spend a retirement. For more than three years, Pollak has been coming to the station three times a month for two hours at a time, one of 25 people who volunteer for Metro. “I could do two times a month for three hours, but I’m old, so it’s hard to be on my feet so long,” said Pollak, who declined to give her age.

Volunteer Melissa Pollak helps a rider at the Rosslyn Metro station on Wednesday during one of her three two-hour monthly shifts at the station.
Metro was looking for volunteers. Hanging around a Metro station seemed fun, she said. She likes helping people, too. And during her couple of hours at the station, a lot of people needed help. Metro is promising to upgrade its fare machines and gates and introduce the ability to pay fares with a smartphone app sometime this year. But for now, the tourists and regulars are mainly relying on the fare machines. “Each one can do odd things,” Melissa said. “You have some that don’t accept bills, and others that don’t accept credit cards.” And there are some whose prompts skip steps, leaving even veterans like her befuddled. But the occasional odd request keeps things entertaining. “I had a couple of tourists

who told me the escalator [at Rosslyn] was the second tallest in the world under some kind of escalator standard,” she said. (It’s actually only the fifth longest in the Metro system, according to the civic group Greater Greater Washington.) “They begged me: ‘We just want to ride down and come back up.’ ” She let them through the emergency gate. “The station manager got really mad at me. The last time somebody wanted to do that, they fell. She said there was ‘blood everywhere,’ ” Melissa said, laughing at how irate the manager was. “Fortunately,” she said, “my people came back up and they were fine.” Reach Kery Murakami at kery.murakami@washpost.com. Montgomery County is testing a new on-demand transit service this summer that allows people to request a ride via a smartphone app for travel within a defined zone in Rockville and the Wheaton/Glenmont areas. Ride On Flex, which launched Wednesday, offers corner-tocorner service for $2 a ride in county-owned, 11-passenger buses that are wheelchair accessible and have free WiFi. Officials say they anticipate residents will use the service in their daily commutes to travel to and from Metro stations, and for daytime errands and trips to commercial districts and public facilities. How does it work? Download the Ride On Flex app from the Apple or Google stores, and request a trip from a designated pickup spot to a drop-off spot within the same service zone. The app will then direct the rider to a pickup spot. It also gives an estimated pickup and drop-off time, similar to Uber and Lyft. The Flex service in Rockville will run weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., providing residents a ride to Rockville’s commercial zones or a connection to Metro when bus service is less frequent. In the Glenmont/Wheaton zone, the rides will operate during weekday peak periods, from 6 to 9 a.m. and from 3:30 to 7 p.m., potentially connecting commuters from residential neighborhoods to Red Line Metro stations at Wheaton and Glenmont. A curb on Trump’s tweets? Twitter will add labels to politicians’ posts that violate its rules TECHNOLOGY Presidents and other world leaders and political figures who use Twitter to threaten or abuse others could find their tweets slapped with warning labels. The new policy, announced by the company on Thursday, comes amid complaints from activists and others that President Trump has gotten a free pass from Twitter to post hateful messages and attack his enemies in ways they say could lead to violence. From now on, a tweet that Twitter deems to involve matters of public interest, but which
violates the service’s rules, will be obscured by a warning explaining the violation. Users will have to tap through the warning to see the underlying message, but the tweet won’t be removed, as Twitter might do with a regular person’s posts. Twitter said the policy applies to all government officials, candidates and similar public figures with more than 100,000 followers. In addition to applying the label, Twitter won’t use its algorithms to “elevate” or otherwise promote such tweets. “It’s a step in the right direction,” said Keegan Hankes, research analyst for the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project, who focuses on far-right extremist propaganda
Crossing the line? There have been long-standing calls to remove President Trump from Twitter over what some have called abusive and threatening behavior. additional Trumpian ire toward social media. The president routinely complains, without evidence, that social media sites are biased against him and other conservatives. Twitter’s rules prohibit threatening violence against a person or group, engaging in “targeted harassment of someone,” or inciting others to do so, such as wishing a person is harmed. It also bans hate speech against a group based on race, ethnicity, gender or other categories. Up to now, the company has exempted prominent leaders from many of those rules, contending that publishing controversial tweets from politicians helps hold them accountable and encourages discussion. The emergency legislation, required to ease overcrowded, often harsh conditions at U.S. holding facilities for migrants seeking asylum, mostly from Central American nations like Honduras and El Salvador, passed by a bipartisan 305-102 vote. Trump has indicated he’ll sign it into law. Dozens of liberal Democrats opposed the bill, reluctantly brought to a vote by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after her plan to further strengthen rules for treatment of migrant refugees ran into intractable opposition from Republicans and Vice President Pence. At dinner with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Trump insisted that the two nations “worked together very closely” on trade issues. The summit will be a test of Trump’s “America First” doctrine that has frustrated allies over disputes on defense spending and trade, and set the U.S. apart from global consensus on how to deal with climate change and Iran’s nuclear program. The president will sit down with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — as well as allies including Germany’s Angela Merkel and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. 50 years of LGBTQ activism
Demonstrators march through the streets during the Gay Liberation Day parade in New York in 1971, two years after the Stonewall riots.
BEBETO MATTHEWS (AP)
CULTURE They didn’t set out to change history; they weren’t the first LGBTQ Americans to mobilize against bias. Yet the uprising by young gays, lesbians and transgender people on June 28, 1969, in New York City, clashing with police near a bar called the Stonewall Inn, was a vital catalyst in expanding LGBTQ activism nationwide and abroad. The anniversary provides an opportune moment to ask: How has the movement fared over the past 50 years? What unfinished business remains? From the perspective of veteran activists, the progress has been astounding. In 1969, every state but Illinois outlawed gay sex, psychiatric experts classified homosexuality as a mental disorder, and most gays stayed in the closet for fear of losing jobs and friends. Today, same-sex marriage is the law of the land in the U.S. and at least 25 other countries. LGBTQ Americans serve as governors, big-city mayors and members of Congress, and one — Pete Buttigieg — is waging a spirited campaign for president. Among those looking back with awe is Stephen Rutsky, 68, a lifelong New Yorker who joined in rioting and protests sparked by a police raid targeted at gay patrons of Stonewall. He engaged in a wide variety of LGBTQ activism over the ensuing decades. “Mobs of gays and lesbians were running around angry and confused, but we all knew that something had sparked a change in our world,” Rutsky remembers. “We were demanding our freedom and there was nothing that was ever going to stop us

from obtaining it. “We’ve come a long way, baby,” he added. “But lots more to do.” High on the to-do list is passage of federal legislation that would provide nationwide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people. A bill with that goal, the Equality Act, passed the House of Representatives in
May with unanimous Democratic backing but appears doomed in the Senate because of Republican opposition. Nationally, 20 mostly Democrat-run states already have laws comparable to the Equality Act — protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations

and public services. The other 30 states, where Republicans hold full or partial power, have balked. The result is a patchwork map in which a majority of states make it legal to be fired, evicted or barred from public facilities because of sexual orientation or gender identity. Internationally, the struggle for LGBTQ rights remains daunting in much of the world. Stonewall helped inspire successful activist movements in Western Europe (a major British LGBTQrights group is called Stonewall) and elsewhere. Earlier this year, the southern African nation of Angola decriminalized same-sex activity and banned discrimination based on sexual orientation. And just last week, the High Court of Botswana rejected laws that meant up to seven years in prison for those convicted of having gay sex, a landmark case for Africa. But gay sex is outlawed in dozens of countries, while Asia and Africa each have only one nation that has legalized samesex marriage. Another battlefront relates to transgender rights. In the U.S., the Trump administration has moved to revoke newly won health care protections for transgender people, restrict their presence in the military, and withdraw federal guidance that trans students should be able to use bathrooms of their choice. Jude Patton, a 78-year-old transgender man from Yuba City, Calif., marvels at the changes that have unfolded during his life. But he says his delight at LGBTQ gains is tempered by worries over the Trump administration’s rollback of trans-friendly protections. “Every day, I see some other right being taken away,” he said. “Historically, the pendulum can swing back again. I hope it gets better.” DAVID CRARY (AP)
Woman is shot, then charged in death of fetus MONTGOMERY, ALA. An Alabama woman whose fetus died after she was shot in a fight has been charged with manslaughter, while the woman accused of shooting her has been freed. AL.Com reported that 28-yearold Marshae Jones, above, was indicted by the Jefferson County grand jury Wednesday. She was five months pregnant when Ebony Jemison, 23, shot her in the stomach during a December fight regarding the fetus’ father. Jemison was initially charged with manslaughter, but the grand jury didn’t indict her after police said an investigation determined Jones started the fight, and that Jemison ultimately fired the fatal shot in self-defense. Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said after the shooting that “the only true victim” was the fetus, who was unnecessarily brought into a fight and was “dependent on its mother to ... keep it from harm.” The Bessemer Cutoff District Attorney’s Office didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday. Advocates for women’s rights expressed outrage. “This takes us to a new level of inhumanity and illegality towards pregnant women,” said Lynn Paltrow, executive director of National Advocates for Pregnant Women. “I can’t think of any other circumstance where a person who themselves is a victim of a crime is treated as the criminal.” BLAKE PATERSON (AP)

Districting up to states Justices: Federal courts don’t have a role in deciding partisan gerrymandering claims Interns run with decisions released by the Supreme Court on Thursday in Washington.
Justices seek explanation for census question
MARK WILSON (GETTY IMAGES)
SUPREME COURT The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that partisan gerrymandering of congressional and legislative districts is none of its business, a decision that leaves state officials free from federal court challenges to their plans to shape districts to blatantly help their parties. The court’s conservative majority, including the two justices appointed by President Trump, prevailed in a 5-4 ruling that dealt a huge blow to efforts to combat the redrawing of district lines to benefit a particular party. The decision, on the last day before the justices’ long summer break, has no effect on racial gerrymandering challenges. Courts have barred redistricting aimed at reducing the political representation of racial minorities for a half-century. But the outcome brings an immediate halt to lawsuits that sought to rein in the most partisan districting plans that can result when one party controls a state’s legislature and governor’s office. In the short term, Republicans are the prime beneficiaries of the ruling. They made dramatic political gains in the 2010 election just before the last round of redistricting, so they have controlled the process in many states. Democratic voters had persuaded lower courts to strike down districting plans in Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin. The one Republican suit came in Maryland, against a single congressional district. Redistricting will next take place in 2021, once 2020 census results are available. Although Chief Justice John Roberts often seeks broader coalitions for relatively narrow decisions, he ended up writing a sweeping redistricting opinion
that drew an impassioned dissent from the liberal justices. Voters and elected officials should be the arbiters of what is a political dispute, Roberts said in his opinion for the court. Federal courts are the wrong place to settle these disputes, he said. “We have never struck down a partisan gerrymander as unconstitutional despite various requests over the past 45 years. The expansion of judicial authority would not be into just any area of controversy, but into one of the most intensely partisan aspects of American political life,” Roberts wrote. The court rejected challenges to Republican-drawn congressional districts in North Carolina and a Democratic district in Maryland. “Our conclusion does not condone excessive partisan gerrymandering,” Roberts wrote, acknowledging that the North Carolina and Maryland maps
Justice Kagan’s dissent Justice Elena Kagan dissented for the court’s liberals and underscored her disagreement by reading an excerpt of her dissent from the bench. “The gerrymanders here — and others like them — violated the constitutional rights of many hundreds of thousands of American citizens,” she said. “The practices challenged in these cases imperil our system of government. Part of the court’s role in that system is to defend its foundations. None is more important than free and fair elections.” She closed by saying that her dissent was “with respect, but deep sadness.” (TWP)
are “highly partisan.” In a dissent for the four liberals, Justice Elena Kagan wrote, “For the first time ever, this court refuses to remedy a constitutional violation because it thinks the task beyond judicial capabilities.”
North Korea urges South Korea to stop mediating between Pyongyang and U.S.
Partisan gerrymandering at its most extreme “amounts to ‘rigging elections,’ ” Kagan wrote, quoting retired Justice Anthony Kennedy in a case from 2004. Advances in technology have allowed mapmakers to draw districts with increasing precision, and advocates of limiting partisan districting have said the problem will grow even worse in the redistricting that follows the 2020 census. Proponents of limiting partisan gerrymandering still have several routes open. Among those are challenges in state courts, including a pending North Carolina lawsuit. Those court challenges can only work, though, in places that have state constitutional provisions that allow for them. That’s how state court judges in Pennsylvania struck down Republican-drawn congressional districts and redrew the congressional map in 2018. MARK SHERMAN AND JESSICA GRESKO (AP)
SUPREME COURT The Supreme Court on Thursday put on hold the Trump administration’s plan to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census form sent to every household, saying it had provided a “contrived” reason for wanting the information. Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., above, wrote the splintered opinion. In a section agreed with by the court’s liberals, he said the Commerce Department must provide a clearer explanation. Agencies must offer “genuine justifications for important decisions, reasons that can be scrutinized by courts and the interested public,” Roberts wrote. Whether there would be time for the department to come up with such an explanation and get judicial approval was unclear. The administration has said a decision was needed by the end of June to add such a question; other officials have said there is a fall deadline. After the ruling, President Trump tweeted that he has asked “the lawyers” whether the census may be delayed until the Supreme Court receives the necessary information to make a “final and decisive decision” on the matter. Those who challenged the citizenship question have said its addition to the form would result in an undercount of millions of people who fear acknowledging that a noncitizen is part of their household. UNITED STATES VS. FRANCE | 3 P.M. FRIDAY, FOX
A ‘showcase’ in France Reigning champion Americans face the up-and-coming French in a dream matchup WORLD CUP The mega-showdown between the U.S. and France in the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals Friday came to fruition, for all intents and purposes, on an island on the Seine almost seven months ago. The occasion was the women’s draw to determine the groups and paths the favorites would need to navigate in the 24-team tournament. The U.S. was the top seed in Group F and stepped onto a collision course with the presumed Group A winner, France, earlier than anyone had hoped. Since that Dec. 8 ceremony, the top-seeded Americans and the fourth-ranked French, long considered the greatest threats to the U.S. reign, have cleared all the necessary hurdles to meet at Parc des Princes in Paris. In anticipation of the clash, the 45,000-plus tickets were claimed months ago. The secondary market is demanding thousands of euros. Few, if any, international women’s team sports events have generated such buzz.
“This is a game,” U.S. forward Tobin Heath said, “we have been looking forward to our whole lives in a way.” The spectacle is not lost on the French players, who have packed stadiums and attracted record TV audiences for three weeks in their effort to win a major championship for the first time after years of disappointment. “They have got a great trophy cabinet,” French captain Amandine Henry said of the Americans, who have won the most World Cup titles (three) and the most Olympic gold medals (four). “We want to write our own chapter in the history of the game.” This matchup also carries significance for women’s soccer, which has made substantial strides this summer but is still seeking acceptance in traditionally male-dominated sports cultures. Outside of a final, the Women’s World Cup has never featured such a consequential heavyweight encounter. “ T h i s i s a m a g n i fic ent
History of this rivalry France has enjoyed recent success against the U.S.(3-4-2 in the past nine meetings). Most recently, in a home friendly in Le Havre in January, the French earned a 3-1 victory. The margin — against a U.S. team resting several regulars and in preseason form and fitness — could have been greater. Since that winter defeat, the U.S. team has not lost. The winning streak is 10, the unbeaten run 13. (TWP)
showcase piece for our sport,” U.S. coach Jill Ellis said. “This game makes it bigger — the attention, the fanfare around it and behind it just draws more attention to it. If we can garner more support, more sponsors, more fans, more little girls going out willing to kick a soccer ball from watching this, that’s fantastic.” The Americans have been at the forefront of women’s soccer for more than 25 years; France began to make up ground early this decade, but despite

developing world-class talent, has failed to advance beyond the quarterfinals of the World Cup, Olympics or European Championship since 2012. This, many observers believe, is France’s time, and the place to do it. At home, the French are 31-1-3 over the past 3½ years. “There is no pressure,” French coach Corinne Diacre said. “Quite the opposite. It’s additional motivation for us. We’re playing against the best team in the world.” The U.S. has advanced to the semifinals in each of the first seven World Cups. The only time it has fallen short of the semis in major competition was at the 2016 Olympics, a penalty-kick defeat to Sweden in the quarterfinals. “The U.S. team lives in pressure,” Ellis said. “They are wired for this. … You don’t come into the U.S. program and hide in the shadows. You come in and you’re in the spotlight right away. Some teams will visit pressure, but I think we live there a lot.” STEVEN GOFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Bronze leads England to semifinals Lucy Bronze, above, helped set up the first two goals before completing England’s 3-0 victory over Norway with a powerful shot of her own Thursday night, sending the team into its second straight World Cup semifinal. After finishing third at the last tournament four years ago, England will now face France or the U.S. on Tuesday in its quest for a first women’s final. “Their two scouts were sitting literally behind the bench,” England coach Phil Neville said. “So I waved at them after the goals.” The first, scored by Jill Scott, came after only two minutes and nine seconds in front of a crowd of more than 21,000 in Le Havre, France. Ellen White then got her fifth goal of the tournament in the 40th minute before Bronze’s 57th-minute strike. (AP)

QUALIFYING OFFERS
Kawhi Leonard, left, and Kevin Durant would make the most money by staying with their current teams.

Wizards make moves ahead of free agency
For Kawhi and Durant, the move is to stay put ANALYSIS Toronto’s Kawhi Leonard and Golden State’s Kevin Durant are both very difficult to figure out, which makes free agency tough to forecast. Luckily for Toronto and Golden State, the math should be very simple. Leonard and Durant are the biggest dominoes that will fall sometime after the free-agent window opens at 6 p.m. Sunday — unless, of course, neither ends up falling elsewhere and they stay put for now. Durant will be offered a $221 million, five-year contract from Golden State. That’s one year and $57 million more than any other team can offer. Provided that he won’t be playing next season because of his ruptured Achilles and that there’s no guarantee the after-surgery version of Durant will remain in the best-player-onthe-planet conversation, it would be less than prudent to leave that much money on the table. “He’s been everything to us,” Warriors general manager Bob Myers said this month. With Leonard, it’s all a bit more complex. The NBA champion Raptors could offer him anything from $32 million for one year to $190 million for five years, and the reality is that Leonard probably wants something in between. In the summer of 2021, after Leonard completes his 10th

year in the league, he goes from being able to command 30% of a salary cap to 35% of a salary cap. That 5% is going to be a lot of money. That’s why, for Leonard, the smarter play in terms of finances is to sign a shorter deal this summer and cash in even more two years from now. “He’s a confident human being,” Raptors President Masai Ujiri said. “He’s an unbelievable person. He is his own person. … I think we’ve built a trust there.”
Of course, all this is the money aspect of things. The basketball stuff still matters. The Raptors would be a strong contender to repeat if Leonard re-signs. And if Durant and the injured Klay Thompson re-sign, the Warriors could start planning Dynasty 2.0. So for Durant and Leonard, all the talk about New York and Brooklyn and L.A. should be just that — talk. The simplest, and right, move for both is this: Run it back. Stay put. TIM REYNOLDS (AP)

Ahead of the start of NBA free agency Sunday evening, the Wizards checked an item off their to-do list by extending qualifying offers to G-F Tomas Satoransky, below right, and center Thomas Bryant, below left. Washington also plans to extend a qualifying offer to forward Bobby Portis, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. With these moves, the players can become restricted free agents Sunday, which will give the Wizards the right to match any offer they receive from another team. In his third season with the Wizards, Satoransky, 27, enjoyed a career year with averages of 8.9 points, 5.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds. Bryant, 21, was the team’s biggest surprise, starting 53 games. And after arriving via trade, Portis, 24, became one of the Wizards’ most reliable rebounders (8.6 a game). (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Rooney’s goal is No. 1 play on ‘SportsCenter’ Wayne Rooney sent a 68-yard shot over the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Brian Rowe in the 10th minute and D.C. United held on for a 1-0 victory over Orlando City on Wednesday night. The goal was No. 1 on the top 10 plays on “SportsCenter” and could end up being the goal of the year in MLS. Here’s how people reacted to the goal. (AP/TWP/EXPRESS) Rooney: “So many times, different managers, teammates, are like: ‘Why are you practicing this? You won’t score from this position.’ On nights like tonight, it’s why I do practice it. It was a good strike and important goal.” United midfielder Chris Durkin: “With that kind of technical ability and that arsenal that he has, there’s no reason for him not to shoot that.” Durkin said he and Rooney have contests in training to see who can find the net from that distance, and Rooney usually hits them. United coach Ben Olsen: “He just hits such a clean ball. He got good wood on it right away.” Rio Ferdinand: “Morning Wazza,” Rooney’s longtime teammate on Manchester United and the English national team tweeted with a video of his goal. Wazza is a nickname Rooney’s English teammates gave him.

Yankees’ plan: Let Stanton rehab knee until August
ESPN: Lawson leaving TV job to join Celtics’ staff
President Trump wants to make it easier for service academy athletes to play pro sports immediately after graduating. He ordered the secretary of defense Wednesday to draft a new policy letting graduates of the U.S. military academies defer their service obligations to pursue pro sports careers. Current policy, enacted under Trump in 2017, mandates that service academy graduates serve two years of active duty before they are eligible to apply for reserve status to pursue pro sports. Graduates of the academies generally incur a five-year active duty obligation, although waivers have been granted. (the washington post)
Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is more likely to return in August than July after straining the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday. Stanton went on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, a day after he was hurt sliding headfirst into third base against Toronto. “I don’t want to say it’s unlikely in July, but the sweet spot would be August in terms of not getting burnt,” Cashman said in London, where the Yankees will play the Red Sox on Saturday and Sunday. Because of injuries, Stanton has played in only nine games this season, hitting .290 with one homer and seven RBIs. (ap)
The Wizards’ TV booth could look entirely different next season. With longtime play-by-play man Steve Buckhantz’s future with NBC Sports Washington already in doubt, ESPN reported Thursday that analyst Kara Lawson will join the Celtics as an assistant coach on Brad Stevens’ staff. Lawson, 38, replaced Phil Chenier on the Wizards’ broadcast team before the 2017-18 season. Lawson, a former Tennessee and WNBA star, would join a growing group of female coaches on NBA benches, including Mystics guard Kristi Toliver, who was hired for the staff of Wizards coach Scott Brooks before last season. Hoop dreams get a boost in Toronto Municipal workers in Toronto — a city captivated by the Raptors’ run to the NBA title — no longer will take down public basketball hoops at 6 each evening. The decision Thursday came after a video showing a city worker dismantling a rim and net sparked backlash online. The city said it had adopted the practice to keep noise from disturbing neighbors. Raptors President Masai Ujiri said of the old rule, “There’s been complaints about noise from basketball? Really?” (ap)

Jack (Himesh Patel) is gonna have a hard time explaining “I Am the Walrus.”
ALSO OPENING
‘Wild Rose’
He’s playing their song At its best, ‘Yesterday’ captures the joy of first hearing the Fab Four FILM REVIEW The whimsical what-if comedy “Yesterday” poses an intriguing question: Had the Beatles never existed, would the world be a worse place to live? Related: If you were a struggling singer-songwriter and you were the only person on the planet who knew those classic Beatles songs, would you fob them off as your own, ensuring fame, fortune and your place in the pop-cultural firmament? The British actor Himesh Patel plays a musician in that precise ethical dilemma in “Yesterday,” wherein a brief worldwide blackout results in no one remembering who The Beatles were. Jack, Patel’s character, realizes something’s amiss when a reference to “When I’m Sixty-Four” sails over the head of his effervescently supportive manager Ellie (an ebullient Lily James). Later, when he strums out a quietly mesmerizing version of
Ed Sheeran (right) wakes up in a world where TLC and Marvin Gaye existed.
the film’s title song, his friends compliment him on writing a terrific tune, with the caveat that “it’s not Coldplay.” Such are the running gags that keep “Yesterday” aloft within a gently amusing speculative bubble, as Jack — who works at a warehouse store in the picturesque seaside town of Lowestoft — becomes an overnight sensation. It’s only when Ed Sheeran drops by — in one of the film’s funniest scenes — that Jack (along with John, Paul, George and Ringo) begins to get his due. “You’re Mozart, man,” Sheeran

tells his new protege at one point, “and I’m definitely Salieri.” “Yesterday” sends Jack on a giddy trip to stardom with the help of the real-life Sheeran and a
hilariously insensitive L.A. manager (Kate McKinnon). Eventually — perhaps inevitably — the film overplays its hand, with screenwriter Richard Curtis (“Love Actually”) seemingly at a loss for how to resolve a story that, after its initial premise has been mined for maximum humor and poignancy, has very few places to go. Although director Danny Boyle does his best, even the brightest visual design can’t overcome cliched chases through train stations and an improbably romantic moment beamed from the stage of a packed Wembley Stadium. Of course, the entirety of “Yesterday” is improbable, so suspending disbelief is required from the jump, when it’s clear that the selfabsorbed Jack is grouchily unaware of Ellie’s unrequited love. That might be the biggest stretch of all in “Yesterday,” which at its least convincing inspires more than a few eye rolls, but at its best invites the audience, along with the characters on screen, to hear some of the finest songs ever written for the very first time. A sweet, stirring, yet refreshingly unsentimental tale of a singer with ambition (and pipes to match), “Wild Rose” is like the anti-“A Star Is Born.” Set in Glasgow, Scotland, and centering on a young single mother and ex-con (Jessie Buckley) who dreams of moving to Nashville to become a country singer, this small, glitz-free drama is a bracing counterpoint to Bradley Cooper’s acclaimed film. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)
‘The Third Wife’ R, 96 min.
A capably told tale of the awakening of a 14-year-old bride (Nguyen Phuong Tra My) in rural 19th-century Vietnam, “The Third Wife” is the first feature film from writer-director Ash Mayfair. She trims nearly every piece of fat from the plot. Dialogue is terse. The only excess is the film’s cinematography, which paints the countryside in lush, naturalistic strokes. HAU CHU (TWP)

Going back to an old haunt FILM REVIEW Artistically, it’s hard to sustain, let alone build on, a popular horror franchise. The cinematic “Conjuring” universe — an interconnected series of hit horror films that began with 2013’s “The Conjuring” — has been a critically mixed bag. “The Conjuring 2”? Kind of meh. And that devil-doll spinoff “Annabelle” — an utter stinker, only to be followed by what turned out to be a scary-good prequel: “Annabelle: Creation.” “The Nun” just felt like pandering: not terrible, but certainly not necessary. Now there’s “Annabelle Comes Home,” the seventh “Conjuring” installment and the third in the stand-alone trilogy of films about a malevolent doll. If it’s not quite as good as the doll’s origin story, “Creation,” it’s still way more fun than any sequel — especially one this deep into a franchise — has any right to be. Returning to the series’ roots, the new movie opens on Ed and Lorraine Warren, characters based on real-life husband-andwife consultants of demonology and witchcraft. Played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, they refamiliarize us with the title character — if that’s the right word for an ostensibly inanimate plaything that seems to pop up in places you didn’t put her — in
Wait, that doll Vera Farmiga is holding is evil?! Color us shocked.
WARNER BROS. PICTURES
The latest ‘Annabelle’ film effectively delivers familiar summer scares
a short prologue. They remove the doll Annabelle from a home she had been terrorizing and relocate her to their “artifact room”: a deadbolted repository in their basement where they store objects that are haunted, cursed or just plain evil. And that should be that. Their young daughter, Judy (Mckenna Grace), knows better than to
‘Annabelle Comes Home’ (R, 106 min.) DIRECTOR: Gary Dauberman STARS: Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson IN A NUTSHELL: A decision to lock away the haunted doll Annabelle in an artifact room goes horribly wrong when a host of evil beings are unleashed on the world.
mess with her parents’ things. Probably because there are signs all over the place: “Danger: Do not touch anything” and “Warning: Positively do not open.” But Mom and Dad are going out of town for a business trip, leaving Judy in the care of her hyperresponsible teenage babysitter Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman) and, without their knowledge, Mary Ellen’s not-so-responsible best friend, Daniela (Katie Sarife). When Daniela sneaks into the artifact room seeking closure with her dead father, she accidentally unleashes a miscellany of horror-movie creatures, like none you have ever seen before — at least not all in the same movie. (Though in some ways, the movie is similar to “It,” in which the shapeshifting boogeyman takes the form of your deepest fear.) It does not, however, reinvent the genre. Most of the film’s best moments consist of simple jump scares and little else. But the connection to “It” is no coincidence. Writer-director Gary Dauberman, making his directorial debut here, co-wrote that 2017 film (and also wrote its forthcoming sequel). Like a skilled session musician, he has learned how to pound on familiar chords to create a pleasurable rhythm. The movie is scary, to be sure, but it’s also larky good fun. To quote King Harvest’s “Dancing in the Moonlight,” the 1972 hit song that plays, cheerfully if ironically, over the closing credits, it’s a supernatural delight. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A sequel to the original two “Ghostbusters” movies — not the 2016 reboot — the new film is due out in 2020.

Toni Morrison doc follows an icon’s evolution FILM REVIEW Before Toni Morrison, no African American — let alone an African American woman — had won the Nobel Prize for literature. The 1993 honor served as an adjustment to this country’s literary canon. In the new documentary about the writer, “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am,” there is an acute awareness that, despite her accomplishments, her position in the canon somehow invites controversy. “Pieces” is not a traditional biography, but instead tracks an evolution: from literary iconoclast to stateswoman. Director Timothy GreenfieldSanders structures his film like Morrison structures her novels: as a series of evocative sketches, jumping forward and backward in time, until they create a complete emotional arc. There are some more typical interviewees, including Oprah Winfrey and Angela Davis, yet the film returns to Morrison like a nurturing (albeit distant) figure. Morrison, at 88, is as cleareyed and sharp as ever. What’s most surprising about her interviews is not her candor, but her humor, revealed, as she speaks, in a way that makes you want to lean closer. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve read all — or any — of Morrison’s books. Either way, you may leave the theater wanting to pick one up on the way home. The good news is there are so many to choose from. ALAN ZILBERMAN (TWP)

@THEYSHOOTACTORS, blasting the
star for misgendering his parent, Caitlyn Jenner, in Monday’s premiere of “The Hills: New Beginnings.” During a conversation about his wife and parent having the same name, “The Hills” cut to an undated interview in which Brody uses “he” twice. Fans were dismayed by Brody’s comments.
“Congratulations to Booker and O’Rourke for taking AP Spanish in high school.” @ISRAHIRSI, joking about the presidential candidates’ use
of Spanish during Wednesday night’s Democratic debate. Beto O’Rourke, right, was the first to switch languages, using Spanish during his opening answer. The moment soon became a meme, as the camera captured the befuddled reactions of Sen. Cory Booker, N.J., left, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Mass., center. Booker then used Spanish to answer an immigration question later in the debate.
“I’ll just show up naked since clothes are an issue.” @SCHMEXYDORK, blasting the French
city of Grenoble after it closed two swimming pools because Muslim women in burkinis swam in them. The Wednesday shutdown was enforced because Grenoble has a ban on fullbody swimwear. The shutdown has been decried as Islamophobic, racist and dangerous, as France and many other parts of Europe are in the midst of an exceptional heatwave.
@JACOBRYANORTIZ, reacting to reports
that Lakers forward LeBron James, left, is allowing newly acquired Lakers forward Anthony Davis, right, to wear No. 23. Davis has worn No. 23 his entire NBA career; James has worn it since 2014 and from 2003 to 2010. Fans believe James will return to No. 6, which he wore during his four seasons with the Heat.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’re after something that others cannot identify, much less locate, so you’re pretty much on your own today. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Once you get yourself embroiled in a debate with experts today, you will have committed yourself to the bitter end. You must avoid that! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The devil is in the details, or so they say — and that’s why you must pay particular attention to the fine print today. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You can make a big difference today if you are allowed to proceed unrestricted and unharnessed. Freedom is everything.
THURSDAY’S SOLUTION
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You
don’t want to be left out today, and at the same time you fear becoming too involved. It’s possible to strike a healthy balance.
THURSDAY’S SOLUTION
You may be faced by that which cannot be accurately measured. You must trust your instincts when it comes to knowing what to do. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You are ready to go from here to there in record time perhaps — but much depends on exactly when you start the journey. Is today the day?
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Someone is likely to press an issue that was never one you paid much attention to — but all that is about to change today. Be ready.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You and a friend know just what has to be done today, and why — but you’re not likely to agree on the best methods to use or the overall timing. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You will have the advantage of seeing things happen before they happen — but this sort of “sixth sense” isn’t likely to be with you for long.

Today in History 1914: Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, are shot to death in Sarajevo by Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip — which sparks World War I.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You will want to tell the truth today at every opportunity. Those who try to deceive the powers that be will find themselves in real peril. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You are eager to share your experiences with someone whom you feel can lend some perspective — and you know just who this should be.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Can we retroactively add this to ‘People vs. O.J.’? O.J. Ariana Grande had a low-key 26th birthday celebration Wednesday in Toronto. The pop star’s family came onstage during the latest stop of her “Sweetener” tour to sing happy birthday, and the Scotiabank Arena staff put together a child’s party setup backstage. “Hope you enjoy the old school ‘kids-themed’ birthday party we set up for you in catering,” the arena’s account tweeted. But isn’t this exactly what a bully would do? The conservatorship that oversees Britney Spears sued a blogger Wednesday in an effort to battle the “Free Britney” movement, which claims the singer is being controlled against her will. The lawsuit alleges that Anthony Elia, who runs the website Absolute Britney, falsely claimed that the conservatorship has tried to make Spears appear more troubled than she is. (AP)

Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday recalled a “nightmare” incident in which he clogged Kris Jenner’s toilet. “The toilet, it’s like one of those electronic toilets. But it’s black, so you can’t see any of the buttons, and it’s dimly lit,” Seacrest said on “Live With Kelly and Ryan.” “The software was messed up and it wouldn’t flush. So I flush it, and the water just builds. … Now you’re in this moment of, ‘What do I do? Do I stick my hand in there?’ ” Seacrest finished the story by admitting that he “left it there.” “Let’s keep this between this,” he said to the camera. (EXPRESS)
