The Times Record reported that Robert Galen was working on his deck Monday when he saw the fox. He said he picked up a plank when he saw it looking him “right in the eye.” It took him 10 minutes to beat the fox to death. Animal control tested it and found it had rabies. (AP)

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said in his daily blog that the 32-yearold man wanted to turn himself in to police on Tuesday. The culprit for the heat wave is an area of high pressure at high altitudes, sometimes called a heat dome. It will be centered over the Northeast this weekend before it is forecast to expand and cover much of the United States by the middle of next week. There’s some chance that by the end of next week, or in about 10 days, it will weaken

some and retreat toward the West Coast. The Commodity Weather Group, which averages simulations from the American, European and Canadian modeling systems, suggests highs have the potential to reach at least 90 in Washington for nine straight days between today and Saturday, July 7. In Washington, the longest streak of 90-degree days is 21, set in the summers of 1980 and 1988. JASON SAMENOW (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CAPITAL WEATHER GANG How do nine straight days of 90s with suffocating humidity levels sound? High temperatures are forecast to hit at least 90 in Washington, continuing well into next week. The hottest stretch is predicted between Saturday and Tuesday, when maximum temperatures in the mid-90s or higher are likely. But temperatures will tell only part of the story. Especially Sunday through next week, humidity levels become oppressive, adding 5 to 10 degrees to how hot it feels. The combination of heat and humidity will produce heat index values near and above 100 for days on end. Police respond Thursday to the scene of a shooting at a newspaper in Annapolis that left at least five people dead.

MATT McCLAIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ANNAPOLIS, MD. A gunman opened fire at a newspaper office in Maryland’s capital on Thursday, killing five people and gravely wounding several others before being taken into custody in what appeared to be one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in U.S. history, police and witnesses said. Police gave few details on the gunman or his motive in the rampage at The Capital Gazette and said he was being interrogated. Authorities said they also found what they believed to be an explosive device. In a news conference, acting police chief for Anne Arundel County Bill Krampf said a white male in his late 30s was arrested in connection with the shooting. NBC News quoted senior police sources as saying the suspect is 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos. Police said the newspaper received threats on social media prior to the shooting and called it a “targeted attack on The Capital Gazette.” Phil Davis, a reporter who covers courts and crime for the paper, tweeted that the gunman shot out the glass door to the office and fired into the newsroom, sending people scrambling for cover under desks. “A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead,” he wrote. Davis added: “There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.” The attacker had mutilated his fingers in an apparent attempt to make it harder to identify him, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. Another official who also spoke on

The shooting came amid months of verbal and online attacks on the “fake news media” from politicians and others from President Trump on down. At the White House, spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said: “There is no room for violence, and we stick by that.” The gunman was believed to have used a shotgun, according

Police deployed in NYC The New York Police Department deployed counterterrorism teams to media organizations in response to the shooting at a newspaper in Annapolis. Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism and Intelligence John Miller said the deployments were not based on any specific threat information, but out of an abundance of caution. to a U.S. official who was briefed on the investigation but not authorized to discuss it publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The gunman was not carrying any identification, authorities said. Krampf confirmed five deaths and said several others were gravely hurt. Their identities weren’t yet released. At least two hospitals said they received three patients, two of them with minor injuries not caused by gunshots. Police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said officers raced to the scene, arriving in 60 seconds, and took the gunman into custody without an exchange of gunfire. In an interview with The Capital’s online site, Davis said it “was like a war zone” inside the offices — a situation that would be “hard to describe for a while.” Davis told the paper he and others were still hiding under their desks when the gunman stopped firing. “I don’t know why. I don’t know why he stopped,” he said. BRIAN WITTE (AP)

The Metro board voted Thursday to essentially cut its size by half — a radical change that was approved unanimously, despite several members’ objections. The move was in response to demands from Virginia lawmakers that the 16-member panel give more power to its eight “principal” voting members and reduce the role of the nonvoting “alternates” as a condition of receiving the state’s share of $500 million a year in new dedicated funding. The measure bars alternates from participating in board or committee proceedings — a change proponents say is intended to streamline discussions. (TWP) MARYLAND

THE DISTRICT Capitol Police arrested nearly 600 people Thursday after hundreds of chanting women demonstrated inside a Senate office building against President Trump’s treatment of migrant families. Among them were a Washington state congresswoman, the lawmaker said on Twitter. The protests came as demonstrations occurred around the country over the Trump administration’s policy of separating immigrant families. They offered a glimpse of what might happen on Saturday, when rallies are planned coast to coast. Amid unrelenting daily images of distraught immigrant children separated from parents and herded into fenced enclosures, women sat on the floor of the Senate Hart Office building’s 90-foot-high atrium. They shouted slogans and cheered for a handful of fist-pumping lawmakers — all Democrats — who waded into the crowd. “What do we want? Free families!” and “This is what democracy looks like” were among their cries. Many wore foil blankets similar to those given to migrants

housed at U.S. detention facilities. The sit-in of protesting women was organized by two liberal groups, Women’s March and the Center for Popular Democracy. In a written statement, the Capitol Police said around 575 people were charged with unlawfully demonstrating inside the office building. The police said those arrested were being released after they were processed. Winnie Wong, political adviser for the Women’s March, said the crowd’s fervor will translate into “the energy we will need to see at the ballot box in November,” when congressional control will be at stake. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, DWash., said she was arrested

during the protest. “We’re here to fight for our families to be free, to fight for the ability of our kids to be with their parents — not in cages, not in prison, but able to live their lives free, safe and secure,” Jayapal said. On Saturday, thousands of protesters are expected to descend on Lafayette Square in the District in a protest calling for the end of family detentions and the return of the at least 2,500 children who were separated from their parents at the southern border. Organizers of the D.C. rally also plan protests in 351 congressional districts around the country. ALAN FRAM AND MATTHEW DALY (AP)/ THE WASHINGTON POST

STAND-UP TRIP

Fla. woman paddles from Cuba to Keys

MEXICO CITY Mexicans fed up with corruption and violence say their country is poised for a historic transformation in Sunday’s presidential election, while others fear the vote will bring a free fall into populism and autocratic rule. The lightning rod for such opinions is front-runner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the oncefiery leftist who has moderated his rhetoric and sought alliances across the political spectrum after two unsuccessful presidential runs and having led massive protests alleging electoral fraud. Despite his new image, the 64-year-old candidate universally called AMLO still appears to trust more in his own sense of mission than in the rules of modern economics and still vows to wrest control of the country back from the “mafia of power” that he has railed against for decades. Such is the level of discontent with Mexico’s political status quo, historically high homicide rates and rampant corruption that even his rivals are trying to convince voters that they represent “real change,” while simultaneously warning that a Lopez Obrador win would herald an era of economic collapse and authoritarian rule. “What people have set as the priority in this election is no

more of the same,” said economics graduate Rogelio Salgado, 30, who plans to vote for Lopez Obrador. Salgado runs down the failures attributed to the outgoing government of President Enrique Pena Nieto — low economic growth, murderous gangs and a nonfunctional legal system. “Who wants a continuation of this? People are fed up,” he says. Lopez Obrador holds a lead of 20 points or more in most polls. But No. 2 Ricardo Anaya of National Action Party, or PAN — a tech-savvy young conservative politician running for a right-left coalition — hopes people who fear Lopez Obrador will flock to him. Some will, like Alfonso Ulloa, 33. Ulloa has worked on Mexico’s effort to open its state-owned energy sector, and fears Lopez

Obrador may cancel such economically important projects. “The important thing is keeping the economy running, and I am afraid Lopez Obrador will screw it up,” Ulloa says. Running third for the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI, is Jose Antonio Meade, who promises a steady hand and experience. That counts for something in a country that faces challenges from President Trump. Meade is also counting on the well-oiled machine of the nearly 90-year-old party, which has spent a total of 77 years in power. Only two parties have occupied the presidency in modern Mexican history: The PRI, from 1929 to 2000 and again since 2012 under Pena Nieto; and the PAN, from 2000 to 2012. MARK STEVENSON (AP)

‘Women’s lives are at risk’ Despite limited power, Democrats vow to try to block Trump’s pick to replace Kennedy

How likely is the demise of Roe v. Wade?

J. SCOTT APPLEWHITE (AP)

POLITICS The Senate battle over Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee is off to a fiery start — even before the president makes his choice. Republican and Democratic leaders traded accusations and barbed comments Thursday on the new vacancy, abortion rights and the debate to come. Both sides are quickly mobilizing after Justice Anthony Kennedy — whose votes have been key in deciding cases on abortion, affirmative action, gay rights, guns, campaign finance and voting rights — sent shockwaves through Washington on Wednesday by announcing his retirement. With Kennedy’s departure, Trump’s pick could shift the ideological balance of the court toward conservatives for years to come. Several Democratic senators considering 2020 presidential runs jumped into the debate Thursday morning, rallying from the steps of the Supreme Court. Sen. Cory Booker pledged a long-term battle to prevent Trump from rushing a conservative judge onto the court, even as he acknowledged it will be difficult for Democrats to block any nominee because Republicans control the Senate. “We now must fight,” the New Jersey Democrat said. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said Kennedy’s retirement sets up a situation where “women’s lives are at risk.” The New York Democrat said giving Trump the chance to pick Kennedy’s replacement threatens abortion rights and raises the question of “whether we are going to be arresting women for making

decisions about their bodies.” If Republicans unite behind Trump’s selection, there’s little that Democrats can do to stop it. Republicans changed the Senate rules last year so that Supreme Court nominees cannot be filibustered, meaning only 51 votes will be required to confirm. Last year, Trump’s first nominee to the court, Neil Gorsuch, was confirmed 54-45, with three Democrats voting in favor. Those Democrats — Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Sen. Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota — are facing difficult re-election races and could find it difficult to oppose the president’s second pick. A flashpoint in the court debate will be abortion rights, which puts a spotlight on key female Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Both have supported abortion access. The abortion issue could also prove difficult for Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada,

Senate leaders quarrel Republicans are pressing for speedy action, but Democrats argue the Supreme Court confirmation process should be put on hold until after the November midterm elections, citing Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell’s successful blocking of President Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, in 2016. (AP) Chuck Schumer, D-N.y.: The Senate minority leader said Thursday it would be the “height of hypocrisy” to vote on President Trump’s nominee before this year’s election. McConnell, R-Ky.: “This is not 2016. There aren’t the final months of a second-term constitutionally lameduck presidency with a presidential election fast approaching,” he said. “We’re right in the middle of this president’s very first term.”

the most endangered Senate Republican running for re-election this fall, whose views have shifted against abortion rights.

Murkowski vowed a careful vetting of the pick, saying she has “extremely high” standards for the Supreme Court. “The President’s nominee to succeed Justice Kennedy can expect exacting scrutiny from the Senate and that is the standard I will apply in evaluating the nominee,” she said. Collins, meanwhile, said the Roe v. Wade decision that codified abortion rights is “settled law.” “I always look for judges who respect precedent,” she said Wednesday to reporters. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the Senate should reject “on a bipartisan basis any justice who would overturn Roe v. Wade or undermine key health care protections.” Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., a member of the Judiciary Committee, bluntly talked of the “blood sport” likely to be triggered by the nomination fight. He said, “Americans ought to aim higher.” CATHERINE LUCEY AND LISA MASCARO (AP)

COURTS Is Roe v. Wade really in peril? The worst fears — and highest hopes — excited by the prospect of a new Supreme Court justice may well be overblown. Just one member of the current court, Clarence Thomas, is on record in support of overturning the 45-year-old high court ruling. And justices often are cautious about blowing up precedents. Still, a more conservative court may be more willing to chip away at abortion rights by upholding state restrictions that retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy and the four liberal justices would have been likely to strike down. In several Republican-led states, lawmakers could be emboldened by the prospect of a friendlier court. Among the issues currently in the courts are Arkansas’ regulation of abortion pills and a Kentucky law that would ban a common procedure for second-trimester abortions. Trump himself has predicted Roe would be overturned because “I am putting pro-life justices on the court.” But Leonard Leo, a Trump adviser on judicial nominations, said abortion did not come up in the president’s interviews with nominees when he chose Justice Neil Gorsuch last year. “The president has never asked a prospective nominee about Roe v. Wade or abortion in any way shape or form,” Leo said. “He’s never discussed the issue with me. Period.” MARK SHERMAN (AP)

House backs $675B bill for defense spending MILITARY The House on Thursday approved a $675 billion spending bill for the Defense Department that includes a 2.6 percent raise for the military. The 359-49 vote sends the bill to the Senate, where the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a similar measure this week. The House bill provides $146 billion for equipment and upgrades, including $22.7 billion for 12 Navy ships, two Virginiaclass submarines and three fastmoving littoral combat ships. The relatively small ships are

intended to operate in congested areas near the shore against small boats and mines. The bill also includes $9.4 billion for 93 F-35 aircraft and more than $4 billion for Black Hawk, Apache and other helicopters. The bill includes an amendment by Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., to bar the Pentagon from buying goods or services from Chinese telecommunications giants ZTE and Huawei. ZTE is accused of violating trade laws by selling sensitive technologies to North Korea and Iran. Huawei has ties to the Chinese government and is

U.S. cheese stockpile hits 1.39B pounds The United States has amassed its largest stockpile of cheese in the 100 years since regulators began keeping tabs, the result of booming domestic production of milk and consumers’ waning interest in drinking it. The 1.39 billion-pound stockpile, tallied by the Agriculture Department last week, has swelled because processors have too much milk, and milk is more easily stored as cheese, analysts say. Cheese surpluses tend to grow during the summer because cows are most productive during spring’s long days, and Americans eat less cheese now than during the holidays, school year and winter sports season. considered a security risk. House Speaker Paul Ryan called the funding bill crucial to the nation’s defense and said it provides the biggest pay raise for service members in nine years. The bill also addresses what Ryan, R-Wis., called a “military readiness crisis.” Over the last five years, aviation accidents have led to the deaths of 133 Americans, Ryan said — a “grave trend” that the bill seeks to reverse. The bill includes nearly $246 billion to boost training, maintenance and other military readiness programs. MATTHEW DALY (AP)

Report: India is worst nation for women’s safety NEW DELHI A report this week ranking India as the most dangerous country in the world for women has reignited the country’s ongoing debate over women’s safety. On Tuesday, the Thomson Reuters Foundation released a study that ranked India as the most dangerous place because of its high rates of sexual violence, lack of access to justice in rape cases, child marriage, female feticide and human trafficking. India outranked countries that are currently at war, such as Syria and Afghanistan, which came in second and third, respectively. Experts interviewed for the poll said India had topped the list because its government has done little to protect women since the controversial rape and murder of a young student in 2012 prompted widespread outrage and changes in the country’s rape laws. The poll — based on a survey of 548 experts on women’s issues — ignited an immediate firestorm of controversy on Indian social media, where critics blasted it as based on opinion, not facts. India’s National Commission for Women chairperson, Rekha Sharma, said: “There is no way that we could be ranked number 1 in such a survey. The countries that have been ranked after India have women who are not even allowed to speak in public.” India has the most child brides in the world — around a third of all girls are married before their 18th birthday. Summit details announced Putin-Trump meeting to take place July 16 in Finnish capital

EVAN VUCCI (AP)

WASHINGTON Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Trump will hold a summit in Helsinki on July 16, a long-expected encounter that comes amid spiraling tensions between Moscow and Washington. A terse synchronized statement issued by the Kremlin and the White House on Thursday said Putin and Trump will discuss bilateral issues and international relations. The announcement came a day after Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, held talks with Putin in Moscow to lay the groundwork for the summit. “I’ve said it from Day One, getting along with Russia and with China and with everybody is a very good thing,” Trump said Wednesday. “It’s good for the world. It’s good for us. It’s good for everybody.” He said he and Putin would discuss Syria, Ukraine and “many other subjects.” Finland has been a favored location for U.S.-Russian summits since the Cold War era, a role helped by its efforts to maintain neutral, friendly ties with its huge eastern neighbor. The summit will offer Putin a chance to try to persuade Washington to lift some of the sanctions imposed on Russia over its 2014 annexation of Crimea, its support for separatists fighting the

government in eastern Ukraine and its alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election. During Wednesday’s meeting with Bolton, Putin argued that U.S.-Russian relations were at a low point because of American political infighting and expressed a desire to “restore full-fledged relations based on equality and mutual respect.” Putin had two brief meetings with Trump on the sidelines of international summits last year, but plans for a full-fledged summit had been delayed amid the FBI and Congressional probes into alleged Russia-Trump ties. an array of anti-Russia sanctions. During Thursday’s briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova warned against waiting for any quick breakthroughs resulting from the

summit, noting that Moscow has “pragmatic and realistic” expectations for the meeting. She said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo could meet as part of efforts to prepare for the summit. Ahead of the announcement, Trump repeated Russian denials of election interference. He has continually parroted the Kremlin’s denial of election interference, a move that has put him out of step with the findings of the U.S. intelligence community and nearly all members of Congress, who say there’s clear evidence of Russian efforts to influence the 2016 campaign. POLITICS Republican fury with the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election boiled over Thursday at a congressional hearing where lawmakers repeatedly attacked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the probe, urging him to end it. For hours, Rosenstein, an appointee of President Trump, faced fierce critics at an emergency hearing called so he and FBI Director Christopher Wray could answer questions about a recent inspector general’s report that pointed to bias within the bureau and found serious failings in how federal law enforcement handled the high-profile investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private emails. But the questions mostly centered on Rosenstein — and GOP accusations that he has withheld key details about that matter and the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into whether any of Trump’s associates conspired with Russia. Grand juries in Washington and New York City have spent months hearing evidence related to Trump associates. “With regard to the investigation, I’ve heard suggestions that we should just close the investigation,” Rosenstein said. “I think the best thing we can do is finish it appropriately and reach a conclusion.” DEVLIN BARRETT, KAROUN DEMIRJIAN AND MATT ZAPOTOSKY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Wayne Rooney takes a selfie with Saida Cruz of Bristol, Va., upon his arrival Thursday at Dulles Airport.

The Rooney era begins Acquisition of English star gives D.C. United a new level of appeal and credibility D.C. UNITED Wayne Rooney, the decorated English soccer star, has agreed to a deal with D.C. United and will join the MLS club in time for the opening of its new stadium, ushering in a fresh era for an organization eager to make a splash on and off the field. According to people close to the negotiations, United finalized a package with Rooney, 32, for a 21/2 -year guaranteed contract worth about $13 million. The club will hold an option for an additional year. The organization also agreed to purchase his rights from Premier League club Everton for an undisclosed transfer fee. United is awaiting final paperwork from Everton. The forward will become the

highest-paid player in team history by a large margin and inject the club with a marquee name to appeal to the masses in a city with several larger-than-life sports heroes. Rooney, the career scoring leader for both fabled Manchester United and the English national team, arrived at Dulles Airport on Thursday afternoon. He is expected to begin training with his new teammates soon. He is not eligible to play until the MLS transfer and trade window opens July 10, four days before the opening of Audi Field, United’s new venue in Southwest D.C. He’ll be available for 20 league matches, including 15 at home. “It is fantastic to be joining D.C. United at such an exciting

Big welcome at Dulles English star Wayne Rooney, who will take the field next month for D.C. United, got a warm welcome Thursday when he arrived at Dulles Airport. time in the club’s history with the new stadium opening in just a few weeks,” Rooney said in a statement released by the team Thursday. “Moving to America and MLS fulfills another career ambition for me. I have the hunger to be a success here and will

give D.C. 100 percent — as I have always done for every team I have ever played for.” Rooney will instantly become the most high-profile player to ever don a United kit and, while the league has turned to younger talent in recent years, he joins other prominent players who gravitated toward MLS late in their careers. That list includes David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Steven Gerrard, Kaká and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who joined the Los Angeles Galaxy this season. United is last in the 11-team Eastern Conference with just 10 points in 12 matches. Its next game will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at home against New England. RICK MAESE AND STEVEN GOFF

Right wing Devante Smith-Pelly, one of Washington’s most popular players during their Stanley Cup run, is staying with the Capitals after all. Panthers’ ex-owner fined $2.75M for misconduct

New putter is little help: Birdies still rare for Tiger

The NFL has fined former Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson $2.75 million following its investigation into sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace. The league said Thursday that the investigation conducted by former U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White substantiated the allegations against Richardson, that the improper conduct was limited to him and that the team and its ownership failed to report the allegations or any resolution agreements to the league. No fair? Senegal is ousted COLOMBIA 1, SENEGAL 0 The “fair play” tiebreaker doesn’t seem all that fair to Senegal. The last African team standing at the World Cup lost to Colombia 1-0 Thursday in Samara, Russia, leaving it even with Japan on record (1-1-1), goal differential (0), total goals (4) and head-to-head. The next tiebreaker to determine who would move on as the second-place team in Group H — Colombia was first — was a new one: which team accumulated fewer yellow cards. Japan had four, Senegal had six. Japan lost to Poland 1-0 in the other group match, which was played at the same time. When Japan realized that second place would come down to the yellowcard tiebreaker, the Japanese started stalling. Coach Aliou Cisse of Senegal was frustrated by the new rule.

ALSO OPENING

“Blindspotting”

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Too many blind spots: Everyone’s a critic? Not even. “Sorry to Bother You”

ANNAPURNA PICTURES

Two new films — “Sorry to Bother You,” opening locally next week, and “Blindspotting,” out July 20 — deal with race in more explicit and more nuanced ways than audiences are used to seeing. The first is about a man (Lakeith Stanfield) who lives in a kindof-futuristic Oakland; after he gets a telemarketing job, he finds he’s much more successful when he puts on a “white voice.” The second is about two friends (Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal), one black and one white, who have also spent their lives in Oakland. I can form opinions on these films and provide evidence to back them up (I think both films are brilliant), but my experience watching them won’t be the same as that of a person who has faced racism. I mean, I already have the whitest voice imaginable. There’s more to film criticism than declaring a movie bad or good. That’s part of it, of course: looking at the techniques used and seeing how well they work not only in that film, but in the context of cinema as a whole. But evaluating a movie isn’t just about lighting and angles and script and sound. It’s about feeling. Ultimately, a movie should use all of its technical elements to connect to its audience and help the audience members

“Superfly”

COLUMBIA PICTURES

At press screenings of upcoming movies, I am often the only woman in the audience. I have never — not once — been the only white person. Does it matter? It matters a lot. A recent study of the reviews of the 100 top-grossing films of 2017 on Rotten Tomatoes showed that most critics are white and male. By a LOT. So most films are viewed with eyes that see the world largely through similar lenses. Part of writing about film is objective and factual: While watching “Superfly,” which opened a couple of weeks ago, I recognized that the director (Director X, aka Julien Lutz) filmed a white police officer pulling over a black couple’s car so that the footage looked like it came from the police cruiser’s dashcam. I could explain the intent behind that choice — the director is communicating that we’ve seen this kind of scene play out in the news, and he’s creating a feeling of dread for viewers who know things might not end well for the driver. The significance of that shot should be obvious to anyone, regardless of race. But I’ll never be the man driving the car.

‘Damsel’ R, 113 min.

Robert Pattinson plays Sam Alabaster, a naive knighterrant who, in the 1870s, arrives in a small U.S. town to rescue the kidnapped Penelope (Mia Wasikowska). In “Damsel,” filmmakers David and Nathan Zellner have created the perfect Western for the #MeToo era, twisting the traditional woman-in-jeopardy narrative to create a clever, comical and uncannily relevant allegory. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

These three new movies deal with the black experience in America today. And most of the critics writing about the films will probably be white men.

The proportion of reviews written by critics from underrepresented racial/ethnic backgrounds in a June survey of reviews of the 100 top-grossing films of 2017 posted on Rotten Tomatoes. connect to one another, even if the viewers don’t feel the same thing. Especially if they don’t feel the same thing. Diversity is crucial among those who, for better or

for worse, tell moviegoers whether a film is worth their time and money. Right now, the voices speaking about new movies come from a limited number of backgrounds. An increase in critics of various races, genders, socioeconomic classes, sexual orientations and ages would bring more pairs of eyes to the same movie, all of them coming away with different experiences. Then the voices talking about a new film would better speak to the audience at large. Movies are both an individual experience and a community one. The bigger and broader the community of critics gets, the better. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

‘Boundaries’ R, 104 min.

In this lively, if at times labored, dramedy by writer-director Shana Feste, a divorced neurotic (Vera Farmiga) embarks on a road trip in the company of her estranged father (Christopher Plummer), and teenage son (Lewis MacDougall). If it all sounds a bit pat, it is — but the cast makes the best of Feste’s narrative contrivances. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

‘Sicario’ lets chaos reign

‘Day of the Soldado’ is a far-fetched follow-up to the 2015 original

‘Uncle Drew’s’ NBA stars are easy to root for

LIONSGATE

FILM REVIEW The first question you might have while watching “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” is: “What on Earth has happened to Taylor Sheridan?” The otherwise smart and provocative screenwriter, known for his gritty, poetic and authentic screenplays for the westernset thrillers “Sicario,” “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River,” seems missing in action. In this dumbed-down sequel to his 2015 debut, the story is far-fetched, the dialogue is forced and phony, and the milieu of the film — set in the violent battleground between Mexican drug cartels and shadowy, rule-bending U.S. government agents — is unrecognizable. All of these problems could, theoretically, have something to do with the absence of director Denis Villeneuve. The filmmaker of the original “Sicario” was reportedly too busy with “Blade Runner 2049” to direct “Soldado,” handing it off to Italian director Stefano Sollima. “Soldado” looks and feels enough like the first film, albeit a shallow imitation of it. So the fault seemingly lies not with the man behind the camera but the one in front of the keyboard. Could Sheridan have been too tied up with his TV series “Yellowstone” to focus on this project? “Soldado” centers on the enigmatic character of Alejandro

The “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” cast saves a vest for Emily Blunt before realizing she didn’t return for the sequel.

(Benicio Del Toro) from the first “Sicario,” a lawyer-turnedsicario, or assassin, who has died inside after his wife and daughter were killed by a drug lord. Here, he becomes part of a lunatic plot by the U.S. government to disrupt a trans-border smuggling operation in which Mexican cartels appear to be trafficking in a new form of human cargo: Islamic terrorists. To fight this threat, the U.S. secretary of defense (Matthew Modine) and his crony (a cardboard Catherine Keener) hatch a secret plan: start a war between “everyone” — i.e., the U.S. and Mexican armies, American covert operatives, various drug cartels and the Mexican police force — simply by kidnapping

‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ (R, 122 min.) DIRECTOR: Stefano Sollima STARS: Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Isabela Moner, Catherine Keener IN A NUTSHELL: A CIA operative teams up with a lawyer-turnedassassin to stop Mexican cartels from smuggling terrorists into the U.S.

the teenage daughter of a cartel boss (Isabela Moner) and making it look like it was done by a rival gang. A confused and improbable narrative follows, pitting Alejandro against his sometime partner-in-arms, CIA operative Matt Graver (Josh Brolin). When the scheme goes south,

Alejandro is stuck baby-sitting an innocent pawn who has become a liability (and who, not coincidentally, reminds him of his daughter). The story from this point on is bloody, needlessly busy and oddly boring. Despite the hot-button subject matter, there is no sense of currency, or even controversy, here. One late, violent plot twist is so preposterous as to defy the level of credulity one normally reserves for a horror film. This may not be accidental. With a subtitle that echoes the 1962 B-movie appeal of “The Day of the Triffids,” “Day of the Soldado” feels like a film in the midst of a profound identity crisis. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TELEVISION

Master Chief gets his close-up

Showtime has given a 10-episode order for a live-action series based on the video game franchise “Halo,” the network announced Thursday. “Awake” creator Kyle Killen will serve as the showrunner, with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” filmmaker Rupert Wyatt set to direct multiple episodes. In a statement, Showtime president David Nevins called “Halo” the network’s “most ambitious series ever.” (EXPRESS)

Drake’s “Scorpion,” out today, confirmed to be a double album

Glenda Jackson to play King Lear next year on Broadway

FILM REVIEW The breezy sports comedy “Uncle Drew” may be predictable: You know that the scrappy senior-citizen basketball players at its heart will triumph. But its NBA all-star cast — well hidden under layers of makeup — has a winning chemistry. The movie opens with an affectionate parody of an ESPN “30 for 30” documentary, focusing on a 1970s street ball tournament at Harlem’s famed Rucker Park court. Today, the Rucker tournament continues to be the dream of such basketball hopefuls as Dax (Lil Rel Howery). He has invested his life savings to field a squad, and nurses a childhood grudge against rival captain Mookie (Nick Kroll). After Dax’s players abandon him to play for Mookie, the coach reluctantly recruits ’70s star Uncle Drew (Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving), who gets his old team back together. That septuagenarian squad includes vivid characters played by NBA legends including Reggie Miller, Shaquille O’Neal and the terrific Chris Webber. Directed by Charles Stone III (“Drumline”), “Uncle Drew” isn’t just about winning: It’s about respect for your elders, and forgiveness — there’s even a gentle dig at Webber’s character that references an ill-advised timeout he tried to call at a crucial moment in his college career. Like these broken players, maybe we too can move on from our mistakes. PAT PADUA (TWP)

SUMMARY: The alien who was such a hit in the ’80s and ’90s is now back because the money ran out and he couldn’t make the mortgage payments on his space mansion anymore. After he lands on Earth, there’s a lot of slicing, a lot of machine-gunning and apparently only one woman. Her job is to look scared and protect a kid. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: There is basically no way to tell what is going on in this trailer. Nicolas Cage is in it. There are bad people who want to and apparently do kidnap Andrea Riseborough. The soundtrack goes “BWWOMMMM a lot and it’s all very noisy. And there’s fire and a weird sword and a tiger and animation. Happy movie watching! K.P.K.

“Drake’s album isn’t even out yet, but I’m exhausted just reading the tracklist. 25 songs is toooo long.” @BENSHERICK, reacting to Drake releasing the track list for “Scorpion,” the rapper’s fifth studio album (excluding compilation albums, mixtapes and EPs), out today. The track list features A and B sides. Fans were taken aback that Drake released the list ahead of the release, since he usually waits until after. They were also intrigued by a track titled “Ratchet Happy Birthday.”

“Y’all it’s not just abortion that will potentially (probably?) be illegal in the next year or so. It’s IUDs and Plan B, which many conservatives view as abortion.” @LUCIE_WITT, tweeting her thoughts after Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced Wednesday that he is retiring. The moderate justice had been a key swing vote in important cases during his 30-year tenure on the high court. Many fear that with President Trump likely to fill Kennedy’s spot with a conservative, access to birth control and abortions may be restricted.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You are more ready for a certain challenge than any of your competitors — but is that enough? Follow your instincts as you progress. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Not all disappointments can be avoided, but today you should be able to skirt one that would have lasting repercussions. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You mustn’t take credit for something for which someone else is responsible, no matter how much you are enlightened in the process. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You must ready yourself for something that is on its way, whether you see the signs or not. Even something “invisible” can have a major impact.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You are on the verge of taking a major step forward — but with it come unavoidable risks. Can you take such a gamble right now?

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You will have to step up and do what another cannot — or will not. In the end, others will recognize your contribution as invaluable. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Your emotions are not to be trifled with today — even by yourself. Once you recognize just how you feel, you must act accordingly. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A

highly unusual situation prepares you today for one that is just around the corner — and it promises to be even more unorthodox. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You recognize in someone else the very traits that you believe give you the advantage — but that may only be a matter of perspective.

Today in History 1520: Montezuma II, the last emperor of the Aztecs, dies in Tenochtitlan, now the center of Mexico City. Some say he was killed by his subjects; others blame the Spanish.

Patience helps you avoid a conflict with someone who is poised to get in your way — but perhaps that very conflict is what is required today.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may be unusually sensitive to another’s opinion today; you must not permit yourself to answer every criticism that comes your way.

1613: London’s original Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed, is destroyed by a fire sparked by a cannon shot during a performance of “Henry VIII.” 1767: Britain approves the Townshend Revenue Act, which imposed import duties on glass, paint, oil, lead, paper and tea shipped to the American colonies. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

RELATIONSHIPS

That’s one role Scarlett never tried out for

‘Writing’s on the Wall’ for this couple Musician Sam Smith and “13 Reasons Why” actor Brandon Flynn may have split after nine months, British tabloid The Sun reported Wednesday. Smith has deleted multiple photos of their pair from his Instagram. Smith performed in New York Wednesday night and told the audience that he’s “going through some s---,” according to E! News. Neither has commented on their relationship status. (EXPRESS)

Scarlett Johansson said that she didn’t audition to date Tom Cruise, responding to claims from a former Scientologist. Brendan Tighe said Wednesday in an interview for “Megyn Kelly Today” that when he was still part of the church, he saw papers that referred to interviews or auditions for a partner for Tom Cruise after his split with Nicole Kidman. Johansson was on the list and “It didn’t go well,” Tighe said. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Johansson said: “The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning. I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships.” (EXPRESS)

REUNIONS

The family that ‘grams together stays together

Azealia Banks, who claims that Russell Crowe choked her, spit on her and called her a racial slur in 2016, has launched a GoFundMe to raise money to sue the actor, according to Page Six. The GoFundMe, which Banks started on Sunday, has raised more than $2,000. Her goal is to raise $100,000. “It’s time that ALL these perpetrators get reprimanded,” Banks wrote. (EXPRESS)

Tristan Thompson no longer has his girlfriend’s sister Kim Kardashian blocked on his Instagram, Page Six reports. Kim Kardashian posted a video to her Instagram Stories on Wednesday night from Khloe Kardashian’s 34th birthday party, asking Thompson to unblock her. “For Khloe’s birthday, it’s only right,” Thompson said. “I got you.” Thompson apparently blocked Kim in the wake of his cheating scandal.
