Six months in jail and an entire lifetime of sororal estrangement
A suburban Detroit man has been fined $100 for a turkey that’s been calling his backyard home. Mark Johnston told WXYZ-TV on Thursday that he hasn’t gone out of his way to make the turkey comfortable since it started showing up outside his Garden City, Mich., home six months ago. He said the turkey will stick around a while, then jump the fence and disappear before returning. Johnston was recently ticketed for keeping the turkey as a pet. (AP)
Des Moines TV station KCCI reported that a semitrailer carrying chocolate from Hershey, Pa., caught fire Wednesday along Interstate 80 near Dexter, Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol said the truck had problems with its brakes, which eventually caught fire. The driver pulled off the interstate and unhooked the cab from the trailer before the trailer went up in flames. There were no injuries, but the trailer and all the chocolate were destroyed. (AP)
A Maine woman will spend half a year in jail after forging her juvenile half-sister’s name on a court summons for shoplifting. The Kennebec Journal reported that Katelynn McLaughlin of Augusta pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated forgery and theft. Prosecutors said McLaughlin, 24, identified herself as her 17-year-old half-sister while police were investigating a theft at a store. The younger sister called police to inform them. (AP)

Metro will be open from 7 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. The system will operate near rush-hour levels before and after the fireworks show on the Mall. The Smithsonian station, which is closest to the Mall, will be open all day. Other stations within walking distance of the Mall are: Federal Triangle, Metro Center, Gallery Place, Archives, L’Enfant Plaza and Federal Center SW.
Driving will be especially difficult for people coming into the District from Virginia. Many roads around the Mall will be closed from early morning Wednesday until late at night. Check washingtonpost.com for a full list of road closures. In much of D.C., parking rules will not be enforced, but street parking near the Mall will be close to impossible.
Metrobus will operate on a Saturday schedule. Watch for detours on the routes near the Mall because of all the street closings. In addition, the D.C. Circulator will not operate its National Mall route on July 4. But other routes run close to the Mall area. The Potomac Riverboat water taxi service to the National Mall will not operate either.
The World War II Memorial will close at 4 p.m. July 4 as part of the fireworks safety zone. The site will open as soon as the cleanup after the fireworks is complete. Access to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial will be limited after 8 p.m. The memorial will remain open, but the public will not be able to access it from Independence Avenue.

‘There are no words’ ANNAPOLIS The historic state capital of Annapolis is draped in grief from a shooting attack on the local newspaper, which killed journalists who chronicled soccer games, art exhibits and the fabric of small-city life. A sign outside The Annapolis Bookstore, a block from the Maryland State House, starkly expresses the depth of sorrow many are feeling in the quaint waterside capital of about 40,000 along the Chesapeake Bay. “There are no words,” it says. Residents were settling into summer’s languid rhythms when the shooting shattered the tranquility. In a quiet town where the incoming class of the Naval Academy just arrived and residents take pride in a rich colonial legacy, the shooting at The Capital Gazette that claimed five lives opens a new chapter in a long history. “It feels so personal,” said Mary Adams, who owns the bookstore and knew two of the victims. “It has shifted our community, and maybe it’s made us more attuned to the fact that we are all in this together.”

Maryland’s tight-knit capital city in mourning after last week’s newspaper shooting
Mourners stand in silence Friday during a vigil in response to a deadly shooting one day earlier at The Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis.
Those killed in Thursday’s rampage were special projects editor Wendi Winters, assistant managing editor Rob Hiaasen, editorial page editor Gerald Fischman, reporter John McNamara and sales assistant Rebecca Smith. “I’m just so sad that this happened to … the people and their families,” Adams said. “They’re
all good people just trying to support a local newspaper.” On Friday, a judge ordered Jarrod Ramos of Laurel, Md., to remain detained and ordered him held without bond on five counts of murder. Authorities say he had a longtime grudge against the paper, suing it in 2012 for an article it ran about him pleading
guilty to harassing a woman. Steve Samaras, who owns Zachary’s Jewelers on Main Street near the City Dock, said he attended a vigil Friday night with his 12-year-old niece. He said she already was grappling with consequences of gun violence, because a friend of hers who had moved to Florida had attended Marjory Stone Douglas High School in Parkland, where 17 people died in a shooting in February. “She said ‘Uncle Steven, I’m scared.’ What do you tell a 12-year-old kid? What do you tell any child?” he said. More tha n 1,0 0 0 people streamed through Annapolis on Friday evening to remember the victims. Samaras has experienced the resilient side of Annapolis firsthand. In 2005, the building that housed his business was destroyed by a fire, and he had to relocate. Seven days later, he said, the community made sure he was open at his present location. “So, the resilience, the determination that they showed me, that’s what we’re going to see happen here,” he said. Metro says it can’t meet federal safety deadline Metro says it can’t meet a federal deadline to install barriers between rail cars. The transit agency told the Federal Transit Administration on Friday that material shortages are preventing chain installation sooner than November 2019. The Administration issued the call for the chains after at least two people with visual impairments were reported to have fallen on the tracks between 7000-series rail cars. The FTA said last week Metro will have to remove hundreds of new cars from service if it can’t meet the Dec. 31 deadline. Metro warns this would reduce service by 26 percent. (AP) BALTIMORE

The Daily Record of Baltimore reported that Benjamin Waldbaum filed the lawsuit Thursday against Martin Slodzinksi. Former colleagues of Fischman, the editorial page editor at The Capital Gazette, roundly described the veteran journalist as reserved, precise and exceptionally talented. “He was famous for working long days and being very precise in his language,” said Steve Gunn, a former editor of the paper.
Assistant managing editor Hiaasen’s family is “devastated” by his death, said his brother, author Carl Hiaasen. “He was the most remarkable person. So gifted and talented and dedicated to journalism.” Hiaasen had just celebrated his 33rd wedding anniversary with his wife, Maria.
McNamara was a longtime Capital employee who had worked as a sports writer and copy editor and moved more recently to a weekly publication, the Bowie Blade-News. “He could have an intelligent conversation about anything,” colleague David Broughton said.
Smith, a sales assistant at The Capital Gazette, was a caring, upbeat person who adored her fiance and his young daughter, friend Carolyn Dedmon said. Smith’s boss, Capital Gazette advertising director Marty Padden, described her as a thoughtful person who made sure the sales office ran smoothly.
Special publications editor Winters was “the heart of the newspaper,” Gunn said. Winters was passionate about serving the community and was a role model, he recalled. “She was in many ways the best part of the newspaper in that she cared so much about [Annapolis],” he said. (AP)

Minimum wage goes up and new laws take effect
More school recess, boost to Medicaid begin in state
Maryland’s minimum wage has gone up. The new $10.10 an hour minimum went into effect Sunday. It’s the last of the phased-in increases that were set by Maryland lawmakers in 2014. The first increase, from $7.25 to $8, took place in 2015. Some lawmakers have pushed for increasing the minimum wage again, but the legislation stalled this year. Other new laws also took effect Sunday in Maryland. One extends disclosure rules that applied to paid political ads for radio, television and print to online social media platforms. Also, students will no longer need a note or permission to bring sunblock to school. (AP)
Longer recess for students, legalized slots-like betting machines at a horse-racing track outside Richmond, and looser regulations on bringing dogs to wineries are a few of the new Virginia laws that went into effect Sunday. The biggest item to come out of the General Assembly this year was a bipartisan agreement to expand Medicaid eligibility to about 400,000 low-income adults. That agreement is part of a state budget that took effect Sunday, but officials said they don’t expect to begin enrolling newly eligible adults into the publicly funded health-care program until next year. U.S. intel: North Korea working to conceal its number of weapons
EVAN VUCCI (AP)
NATIONAL SECURITY U.S. intelligence officials, citing newly obtained evidence, have concluded that North Korea does not intend to fully surrender its nuclear stockpile, and instead is considering ways to conceal the number of weapons it has as well as its secret production facilities, U.S. officials said. The evidence, collected since the June 12 summit in Singapore, points to preparations to deceive the U.S. about the number of nuclear warheads in North Korea’s arsenal as well as facilities used to make fissile material for nuclear bombs, the officials said. The previously undisclosed Defense Intelligence Agency estimate that North Korea is unlikely to denuclearize stands in stark contrast to President Trump’s comments post-summit, when he declared that “there is no longer a nuclear threat.” Intelligence officials and many North Korea experts have generally taken a more cautious view, noting that leader Kim Jong Un’s vague commitment to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula is a near-echo of earlier pledges, even as North Korea accelerated efforts to build nuclear weapons. U.S. intelligence officials have for at least a year believed that the number of warheads is about 65. But North Korean officials are suggesting far fewer. The lone uranium-enrichment

That site is believed to have twice the capacity of Yongbyon. Through imagery and computer hacking, the U.S. has improved its intelligence collection in North Korea. U.S. intelligence officials believe more than one hidden site exists. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has acknowledged that it could take years to implement any agreement on eliminating North Korea’s nuclear stockpile, an asset North Korea regards as a guarantor of its survival. years of work, and an agreement to grant access to outside inspectors, before U.S. officials could say that the weapons threat has been neutralized. “North Korea remains free to manufacture more nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and other weapons of mass destruction — even though it has unilaterally frozen testing of its nuclear weapons and certain ballistic missiles,” said Abraham Denmark, Asia Program director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. “There is no deadline for them to eliminate their illegal capabilities, or even freeze their continued production.” ELLEN NAK ASHIMA AND JOBY WARRICK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

9 injured in mass stabbing Six refugee kids among those targeted in attack at girl’s birthday party BOISE, IDAHO Nine refugees, including six children, were injured when a man went on a stabbing rampage at a 3-year-old’s birthday party at an Idaho apartment complex, according to Boise police. Police said they responded to a call Saturday night about a knife-wielding man at an apartment complex. Within minutes, officers arrived and took a suspect into custody. However, officers found a “chaotic and tragic” scene, with nine victims “scattered across the apartment complex,” Boise Police
Chief William Bones said Sunday. All were taken to a hospital, police said, and at least four had life-threatening injuries. As of Sunday, each of those victims had survived, though several of the injuries remained serious. “The level of some of the injuries will be life-altering … for some of the victims,” Bones said. Bones fought back tears as he revealed the ages of the injured children: a 3-year-old, two 4-yearolds, a 6-year-old, an 8-year-old and a 12-year-old. The birthday girl was among those seriously injured in the stabbings. Three adults who tried to intervene were also hurt, he said. Bones said the refugees were from Syria, Iraq and Ethiopia, and were “the newest members

Kinner, who is not a refugee, was a “temporary resident at the apartment complex … until he was asked to leave on Friday” because of his behavior, police said. Kinner returned Saturday, when the party was happening a few doors down from where he had stayed. That was where he directed his attack, targeting the children first, Bones said. Kinner was charged with nine counts of aggravated battery and six counts of injury to a child.

The Gorsuch blueprint Trump plans to quickly pick a justice in hopes of replicating last year’s chaos-free confirmation
Armed men use chopper to free French inmate
CHIP SOMODEVILLA (GETTY IMAGES)
POLITICS President Trump is driving to execute the same playbook in selecting a new Supreme Court nominee that last year delivered a swift confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch, following a methodical course in hopes of avoiding the lurching disorder that has so often engulfed his White House. As Trump looks to reorient the nation’s high court with a replacement for retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, he has left himself little room for improvisation — in part because he has delegated and outsourced much of the spadework. Using Gorsuch as a model, the president has said his next nominee will be chosen from a preselected list of 25 candidates, most of them already fixtures on the federal courts who have been subject to public and internal vetting. The interview process for a half-dozen or so finalists is beginning, including private sit-downs with Trump starting this weekend at his golf course in Bedminster, N.J., as well as sessions with White House counsel Donald McGahn and formal FBI background checks. An announcement date has also been set: July 9. With just four months until the midterm elections, when any Democratic gains in the Senate would jeopardize a Trump nominee, the White House is working with Senate Republican leaders to set a rapid timeline for voting on a nominee by October so they can take advantage of the GOP’s razor-thin majority in the chamber. “Outside of war and peace, of course, the most important decision you make is the selection of

a Supreme Court judge,” Trump told reporters Friday. Trump is taking direction from his counselors, including two with deep roots in Washington’s conservative network: McGahn and Leonard Leo, who is on leave from the Federalist Society to informally advise on judicial nominations. The president has told advisers he is looking for three overarching attributes in a replacement for Kennedy. First, one adviser said, Trump insists upon an “extraordinarily well qualified” nominee with a superlative résumé. Secondly, Trump has said it is essential his nominee be “not weak,” meaning someone with independent judgment and the courage to buck “the political and social fashions of the day,” as the adviser put it. Thirdly, Trump privately says he wants a nominee who will “interpret the Constitution the way the framers meant it to be,” according to the adviser, who spoke

Susan Collins, R-Maine, a key swing vote on President Trump’s next Supreme Court pick, said Sunday she would not vote for any judge who wanted to end access to abortion in the U.S. by overturning Roe v. Wade. She said Sunday on CNN that Roe v. Wade established abortion as a “constitutional right.” Trump has already met with Collins, and she said she let him know that she would not support some of the people on the list of 25 judges he’s considering. She added that she urged him to expand his list. (TWP)

relatable life stories. Thomas Hardiman, runner-up to Gorsuch in the court sweepstakes last year, is believed to be a contender this time as well. Trump’s shortlist also is said to possibly include U.S. Appeals Court Judge Amy Coney Barrett of Indiana; U.S. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh of Maryland, a former Kennedy law clerk; U.S. Circuit Judge Raymond Kethledge of Michigan, who was a finalist last year; and U.S. Appeals Court Judge Amul Thapar of Kentucky. The Republican plan is for Trump’s nominee to spend the second half of July and early August paying courtesy calls to key senators on Capitol Hill and preparing for confirmation hearings, which could begin by late August, with committee votes by early September and a floor vote later that month so the justice could be sworn in before the next court term begins Oct. 1. REAU, FRANCE A notorious French criminal serving 25 years for murder made an audacious escape from prison Sunday after several heavily armed men landed a helicopter in a courtyard, freed him from a visiting room and carried him away. It was the second daring escape by Redoine Faid, who once blasted his way out of a different prison with explosives hidden in tissue packs. His latest escape, from Reau Prison, took only “a few minutes,” France’s Justice Ministry said. Unarmed guards said they could do nothing to prevent it. Dressed all in black, two men wearing balaclavas and police armbands got off the chopper and entered the prison to look for Faid. They used a grinding machine to open the door to the visiting room, Martial Delabroye, a representative of the guards’ union, told BFM television. When the chopper arrived, Faid was meeting with his brother in the visiting room. A third man was holding the pilot at gunpoint, union members said. French media reported that the three men took the pilot hostage at a flying club in the Paris region. He was later released with no injuries. The helicopter was found burned in the northern suburbs of Paris. French prosecutors opened an investigation into the escape. Faid, 46, was serving time for the 2010 death of a young police officer killed during a botched robbery. SYLVIE CORBET (AP)

The remarks aired on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” on a critical day for the U.S. relationship with its neighbors. Canada started collecting
tariffs on $12.6 billion worth of U.S. products to hit back at Trump, and Mexican voters went to the polls to pick a new president, who will play a key role in shaping any final NAFTA deal. “NAFTA, I could sign it tomorrow, but I’m not happy with it. I want to make it more fair, OK?” Trump told Maria Bartiromo of Fox News, adding that “I want to wait until after the election” to sign it. Trump angered Canada and Mexico by imposing hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the two countries, citing national security concerns. Those tariffs went into effect June 1.

Agreement put on hold as Canada starts tariffs on $12.6B of U.S. goods
verbatim
Canada on Sunday started tariffs on U.S. products, including steel and beef.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called the tariffs “insulting and unacceptable,” and he retaliated by putting tariffs Sunday on U.S. steel and aluminum, as well as products such as ketchup and beef. Many business and world leaders are hoping for a swift end to Trump’s tariffs, which they argue hurt economic growth and U.S. relationships around
the world. Trump is now waging trade battles with Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan and China. The next steps in the escalating trade war are fast approaching. China plans to hit the United States with tariffs on more than 500 goods Friday, the same day that Trump will start collecting tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese imports. Suicide bomber targets Sikhs, Hindus; 19 dead
At least 48 people were killed Sunday when an overcrowded bus plunged off a mountain road into a gorge in northern India, officials said. The 28-seat bus was carrying about 60 people. Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Rawat said the bus fell into a 700-foot-deep gorge in the Himalayan foothills. He said about a dozen other people were injured and hospitalized. Police official Manoj Kumar said rescuers recovered 48 bodies from the accident site. “People were packed like sardines, said another police officer, Jagat Ram Joshi. He said at least seven of the injured were in critical condition. (AP)
Police in India’s capital said they found 11 bodies at a home under mysterious circumstances Sunday, including 10 that were blindfolded and hanging. The victims were all from the same family and most had lived in the home where they were found in New Delhi, police said. During a search of the house, handwritten notes were found that point “toward observance of some definite spiritual or mystical practices by the whole family, police said. Police were investigating whether the victims — a 77-year-old woman, her two sons and their wives, a daughter and five grandchildren — died by suicide or were killed. (AP)
A suicide bomber targeted a convoy of Sikhs and Hindus on their way to meet Afghanistan’s president in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Sunday, killing at least 19 people. Inamullah Miakhail, spokesman for the provincial hospital in Nangarhar, said that 17 of the 19 dead in the attack were from the minority Sikh and Hindu communities. Miakhail added that at least 10 of the 20 wounded were also from the same minority community and were undergoing treatment at a Jalalabad hospital. A spokesman for the provincial governor said a number of shops and vehicles caught fire as a result of the attack. (AP)

TORONTO GETS STAR
First day of free agency As of Sunday evening, LeBron James’ latest big decision still loomed over the NBA, but that didn’t stop the league’s free agency period from opening with a flourish shortly after midnight the previous night. The biggest news surrounded marquee names who had decided to re-sign with their current teams while James — who opted out of a $35.6 million deal to play one more year in
GETTY IMAGES
Cleveland — was still considering his options. Here’s a roundup of Sunday’s news from around the league. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)
Philly gets to pitch LeBron’s agent
Paul George, other stars stay put
Dallas finally gets DeAndre Jordan
According to multiple reports Sunday, the 76ers had scheduled a chance to pitch their process to LeBron James. Representatives from Philadelphia were set to meet with James’ agent, Rich Paul, in Los Angeles. James, 33, returned to L.A. from vacation Saturday but didn’t plan to attend the meeting. The 76ers can offer the three-time champion a chance to play with budding stars Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid in the Eastern Conference, where the path to the NBA Finals is easier than in the West. While Philly would get a voice, the front-runners for James appeared to be the Cavaliers and Lakers. Earlier Sunday, James and Paul had a phone call with Cavs general manager Koby Altman. Cleveland own the “Bird rights” for James and can offer him more money than any other team — a five-year, $207 million deal. The Lakers, meanwhile, have enough salary-cap space to sign James and another star. James has interests beyond basketball, and the massive L.A. market would give him a bigger platform.
In Oklahoma City, general manager Sam Presti persuaded forward Paul George to agree to a four-year deal for $137 million (with a player option for the last year). The Thunder had no assurances George would re-sign with them when they traded for him last summer. If OKC was the biggest winner in the opening hours of free agency, Golden State had to be a close second. The Warriors got back Kevin Durant — the MVP of the past two NBA Finals — for a third season. Because he took a one-year deal with a player option for a second, as opposed to a two-year deal with an option for a third, he saved the Warriors about $5 million. Add in that forward Trevor Ariza stunningly left Houston for a one-year, $15 million deal with Phoenix, and George not going to his hometown Lakers, and the Warriors are sitting pretty. Speaking of the Rockets, they quickly agreed on a four-year, $160 million contract with Chris Paul to keep the All-Star point guard and re-signed guard Gerald Green for the veteran’s minimum.
For Dallas, persistence paid off. The Mavericks are getting DeAndre Jordan three years after he came close to signing with them. The center agreed to join Dallas in 2015, then changed his mind, and social media went beyond abuzz over what happened next. A Clippers contingent including former teammate Blake Griffin and coach Doc Rivers went to Jordan’s house and stayed with him until his new deal with L.A. could become official. But this time he quickly agreed to a one-year, $24.1 million deal and will finally be part of the Mavs. Jordan, 29, was ready to leave L.A. after the Clippers last week acquired center Marcin Gortat by dealing Austin Rivers to Washington. Jordan’s move to Dallas takes away one potential suitor for center DeMarcus Cousins, who could be a fit for the Lakers if they’re able to lure LeBron James. Otherwise, Cousins might have to return to New Orleans on a cut-rate deal. The Pacers, like the Mavs and the Suns, are nearly out of cap room after getting forward Doug McDermott on a three-year, $22 million deal.
NBA free agency: Nuggets retain center Nikola Jokic (5 years, $148M), guard Will Barton (4 years, $54M)
Tavares signs with Maple Leafs John Tavares is bidding Long Island goodbye for a chance to play for his hometown Maple Leafs. The Islanders captain agreed to a $77 million, seven-year deal with Toronto on Sunday, announcing his decision on Twitter about an hour after the NHL free agency signing period opened. “It’s time to live my childhood dream here in Toronto,” wrote the center, who is from the suburb of Mississauga. Tavares, 27, was the No. 1 overall pick in 2009. He joins a team that already featured the No. 1 pick from 2016, center Auston Matthews. The signing overshadowed Sunday’s other most notable deal: winger James van Riemsdyk’s return to Philadelphia from Toronto on a $35 million, five-year contract. (AP)
Center Aron Baynes agrees to re-sign with Celtics for 2 years, $11M

Knapp’s walk-off homer gives Philadelphia third win of four-game series PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 3 Washington reliever Justin Miller allowed Philadelphia pinch-hitter Andrew Knapp to hit a game-ending homer just inside the right field foul pole in the 13th inning as the Phillies rallied to beat the visiting Nationals 4-3 on Sunday. The win was the Phillies’ third — all by one run — in this fourgame set. The Nationals hit seven home runs in a 17-7 win Friday. Over the past two weekends, Philadelphia has gone 5-2 against the two-time defending NL East champions, increasing their edge
on the Nationals to three games for second place in the division. The Nationals are now 6-15 in their past 21 games dating back to June 8. Washington is six games behind Atlanta for the lead in the NL East. Knapp ended the game when he turned on a fastball and lofted it into the bleachers in right field. Miller (5-1) gave up the run in 11/3 innings of work. Nick Pivetta (5-7) got the win by pitching a scoreless inning. Washington jumped out early, scoring an unearned run in the fourth on an Anthony Rendon sacrifice fly. In the fifth, the lead expanded to 3-0 when Adam Eaton singled to right to score Daniel Murphy — who started at second base for the first time this

season — and Mark Reynolds. However, Gio Gonzalez labored in the bottom of the fifth after cruising through the first
four innings with only one hit and one walk allowed. He walked three in the fifth inning, including Cesar Hernandez with the bases loaded to put Philadelphia on the board. Rhys Hoskins’ sacrifice fly to right made it 3-2, and Odubel Herrera singled to score Carlos Santana to tie the game. Washington returns home tonight to begin a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Max Scherzer (10-4, 2.04 ERA) will face former Detroit teammate Rick Porcello in a battle of former Cy Young Award winners (7:05, MASN, ESPN). Quiet day ends big weekend for Capitals With the Capitals bringing back almost their entire roster from their championship season, the first day of NHL free agency was mostly quiet as expected for Washington. The club did make a couple of fringe moves to help make up for the loss of Jay Beagle (Vancouver) and close out a busy weekend.

Dowd signs for minimum The Capitals on Sunday signed free agent center Nic Dowd, 28, to a one-year, $650,000 deal, the league minimum. Within 10 minutes of that signing, the Caps announced they had re-signed center prospect Travis Boyd for two years at $800,000 per year. QUICKEN LOANS NATIONAL

Nasa Hataoka, a 19-year-old from Japan, shot an 8-under 64 to make the playoff but dropped out with a par on No. 18.

Defenseman Michal Kempny re-signed with the Capitals on a four-year, $10 million deal, the team said Friday. Kempny, a trade-deadline acquisition last season, was set to become an unrestricted free agent. The Caps return their top four blue-liners.
Reirden replaces Trotz The Caps also announced Friday that top assistant Todd Reirden had been promoted to his first head-coaching job. Reirden, who has worked primarily with defensemen, replaces Barry Trotz, who was named coach of the Islanders on June 21.

Russia rocks Spain in PKs Host barely possesses ball but rides goalie to advance to quarters

think our fans and foreign fans have recognized that we’re a country that can play football and organize big events.” It was a shocking elimination for 10th-ranked Spain. Still, World Cup history was on Russia’s side after its well-organized team survived two hours of barely having the ball. Though Spain completed 1,029 passes — a World Cup single-match record
— it rarely threatened to score. Russia extended a streak of World Cup hosts winning penalty shootouts to five. France, South Korea, Germany and Brazil have also won shootouts since 1998. With Spain taking first, the shootout was tied 2-2 when Akinfeev pushed away a kick by Jorge “Koke” Resurreccion. Russian penalty kickers were perfect against struggling
Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, who exited the tournament with just one save. Spain led in the 12th minute when Sergio Ramos helped force Russia’s Sergei Ignashevich into an own goal. A defensive error let Russia tie it in the 41st, after Gerard Pique’s raised arm blocked a header by Artyom Dzyuba, whose ensuing penalty kick fooled De Gea. GRAHAM DUNBAR (AP)
With Germany, Argentina and Portugal eliminated, Brazil now has a strong shot at leaving Russia with a sixth World Cup title. Brazil was in similar position four years ago when it hosted the tournament but was humiliated 7-1 by eventual winner Germany in the semis. Manchester City right back Danilo, above, is available for Brazil after missing two matches with a right hip injury. But fellow defender Marcelo (back spasms) and winger Douglas Costa (thigh) are out. Mexico is seeking its first trip to the quarterfinals since 1986. RUSSIA 1, SPAIN 1 (4-3) Stretching every part of his body out into a star shape and diving to his right, Igor Akinfeev flicked out his left foot and kicked the ball high away from danger. Akinfeev’s foot kept Russia’s party going Sunday night in Moscow, sealing the biggest upset of the tournament and one of the greatest in World Cup history. The Russian goalkeeper saved two shots during the shootout, and all of his teammates scored to give Russia a 4-3 advantage after a draw that was dominated by Spain in every way but the 1-1 score. Russia — the lowestranked team in the World Cup at No. 70 in the world — is stunningly going to the quarterfinals to face Croatia on Saturday. Akinfeev’s winning save against Iago Aspas made the stadium shake with the roar of around 70,000 Russians celebrating their team’s best World Cup run since it was the Soviet Union in 1966. “We’re hosting a fantastic tournament,” Akinfeev said. “I

Iniesta retires, signaling end of golden generation
Danijel Subasic saved three penalty kicks, and Croatia’s World Cup hopes. In the second straight shootout Sunday, the Croats advanced to a quarterfinal against Russia with a 3-2 win over Denmark on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Nizhny Novgorod. Portugal’s Ricardo is the only other man to make three saves in a World Cup shootout (2006 vs. England). Kasper Schmeichel saved two of the penalties for Denmark. The five combined shootout saves are a World Cup record. (AP)
Andres Iniesta, the skilful midfielder who was a symbol of Spain’s golden generation, retired from international soccer after the loss to Russia. Iniesta, 34, played in 131 matches for Spain. He came off the bench Sunday and almost won it in the 85th minute, but his shot was saved. Iniesta scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final and was a key for Spain when it won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships with a tikitaka style modeled on Barcelona’s ball-possession game. Belgium is the leading scorer of the World Cup and faces Asia’s last remaining representative. Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, above, has four goals and trails only England striker Harry Kane (five) for the tournament lead. While chasing the Golden Boot, Lukaku will also be trying to help Belgium equal its World Cup record of four consecutive wins set four years ago. A win over Japan would put the Red Devils in the quarterfinals for only the third time. Japan should be led by former Man United forward Shinji Kagawa and Keisuke Honda, a former AC Milan player who excels on free kicks. (AP)

Smackdown of lame, ’80s stereotypes TV REVIEW Since “GLOW’s” spirited first season premiered last summer, there’s ample evidence of a feminist turnaround — in media culture, at least. Some powerful, predatory men have been thrown to the mat of public opinion, their limbs pretzeled and their cries of “uncle” triumphantly dismissed. Stories by and about women are getting more attention, some of which will, with the right support, influence what we see going forward on big and small screens. “GLOW” is a good example of what that world could look like. The Netflix dramedy, based on the real-life experiences of a ragtag team of lady wrestlers in the 1980s, can be viewed as a historical primer on the bad ol’ days of showbiz chauvinism. Season 2 — all 10 episodes of which are now available — seems a little redundant at the
outset as it continues to chronicle the establishment and early successes (and failures) of the cheaply made “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” cable TV show. By the fourth episode, creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch and their writers have come up with some hot-button storylines. In one episode, one of the women wrestlers berates another for jeopardizing the show by refusing to have sex with an unctuous network executive. “I don’t like it when you’re in a clump, whisperin’,” grouses Sal Silva (Marc Maron), the coarse but compassionate director of his fledgling troupe of wrestlers, who do tend to huddle and conspire against him — particularly Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an underemployed actress who in Season 1 invented the perfect “heel” role for herself as Zoya the Destroya, a Soviet wrestler out to trample her hyperpatriotic blond American nemesis, Liberty Belle (Betty Gilpin). Season 2 takes some needed time to flesh out the Gorgeous

‘Strokes of Genius’
The cast of “GLOW” re-creates an average day on a Metro escalator.
Finding truth in fiction In one standout episode, Tamme Dawson (Kia Stevens) finally tells her son what she’s doing for a living. He comes to the show and watches as the crowd boos her alter ego, the “Welfare Queen.” The racism and minstrelsy are anything but subtle, yet Tamme’s son sees something else: His mother is a force to be reckoned with. (H.S.)
Ladies — not only as the egregious stereotypes they’ve been assigned based on their looks, race or backgrounds, but also as the women they actually are. When things look most futile for the
GLOW enterprise, “GLOW” gives in to a wonderfully absurd commitment to ’80s verisimilitude, as the women take charge and create an episode of their cable show that is almost all backstory, giving their alter egos a chance to briefly break loose from their one-dimensional cages. It’s great to see “GLOW” in that moment. This is a show that works on a few different levels, though it’s never better than when it goes to giddy workout montages and thrilling ringside ngside action. In those glorious reveries, veries, watching “GLOW” can be like discovering a newfound verse erse of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”

Send in the clowns: ‘The Proposal’ has no shortage of buffoons “The Proposal” (10 p.m. Mondays on ABC) is winning its time slot, and it’s easy to see why. It’s the guiltiest guilty pleasure of 2018 — a fast-paced dating show, only without the actually dating part! Here’s the ridiculous premise: A “mystery” singleton concealed in a pod assesses 10 suitors “hoping to win the heart of a woman they’ve never met” (so says the host, former NFLer Jesse Palmer, through his gleaming teeth). The goal is to narrow the field to two, who each have the chance to propose. As Ashlee, last week’s
picker, noted, “This is so hard, y’all.” She asked questions. The guys paraded around with their shirts off. It’s fun to guess who will be cut. It wasn’t hard to figure out that smug Jeremy, who pledged that if he and Ashlee got engaged “me and her would be talking all the time,” was destined for rejection — if only for his grammatical sins. Ashlee, an aspiring country singer and divorced mom, also bid adieu to a guy who sings a song he wrote “just for you.” Sample lyric: “I’m looking for a unicorn to partner with me.” Keep on looking, dude. And she nixed a Pilates instructor who believes in fate.
Fate can be so unkind! Her finalists were Sam, who proposed marriage, and Jordan, who proposed a prewedding honeymoon to Fiji — “and if we hit it off, I’ll give you this ring.” Naturally she picked … Jordan?! The episode was taped earlier this year and they’re still together (although the Fiji trip hasn’t happened yet). The show has already had a scandal — a woman accused a contestant of facilitating her date rape last year. His episode was pulled. Producer Mike Fleiss, the mastermind behind “The Bachelorette,” which also has a vetting scandal this season, said he is “horrified that any of these abusive a-holes are on our shows.” Although faithful viewers of Fleiss’ dating shows might note that the cast of suitors includes plenty of regular old a-holes. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The help you were counting on isn’t likely to materialize today, leaving you to deal with a difficult situation. You can do it. TODAY: If you thought it couldn’t get any hotter, you were wrong. Skies full of hazy sun push temperatures to the upper 90s to lower 100s. Dew points are a couple points higher as well, which just adds to the unpleasantness. For those working outdoors, these are potentially dangerous conditions.

people ‘EMOTIONLESS’
Drake’s son shouldn’t read into track title
Men, women: ‘The feeling is mutual, Tessa’ Tessa Thompson said she is “attracted to men and also to women” in an interview with Net-A-Porter published Friday. Discussing her rumored romance with Janelle Monae, the actress added: “We love each other deeply. We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s OK. It doesn’t bother me.”
Drake confirmed he is a father with lyrics on his album “Scorpion,” which was released Friday. Pusha T fueled the rumors in May when he released the diss track “The Story of Adidon,” in which he claimed Drake fathered a son with former porn star Sophie Brussaux. “You are hidin’ a child,” Pusha T rapped. “Let that boy come home.” Drake seems to address the controversy on the “Scorpion” track “Emotionless”: “I wasn’t hiding my kid from the world, I was hiding the world from my kid.” In “March 14,” the 31-year-old rapper references a Michael Jackson lyric, saying, “She not my lover like Billie Jean, but the kid is mine.” (EXPRESS/AP)

50 Cent on Thursday declined to apologize for writing “LOL” in an Instagram comment mocking Terry Crews for his testimony before Congress about sexual assault. Speaking at a Starz event to promote his show “Power,” the rapper said: “When you put LOL behind any statement, it means you’re laughing out loud. That means it’s a joke. That’s it.” (EXPRESS/AP)
Kaley Cuoco married equestrian Karl Cook on Saturday, the “Big Bang Theory” star announced. The couple got married at a horse stable near San Diego, People reported. Posting a photo from the wedding on Instagram, Cuoco wrote: “Legally KCSQUARED 6-30-18.” This is Cuoco’s second marriage; she filed for divorce from former tennis player Ryan Sweeting in 2015. Cuoco and Cook began dating in 2016. (EXPRESS)
