Who knew an 11-foot alligator crashing through a kitchen window would be a “fun thing”? The gator broke wine bottles and dented the fridge at the Clearwater, Fla., home of Mary Wischhusen, 77, in May. But she‘s looking on the bright side. She told the Tampa Bay Times that the police and fire rescue workers who responded were cute. She’s been recognized on the street, and people have given her wine to replace what the gator broke. (AP)
Wichita Falls, Texas, police say a woman ate half a cake while roaming a Walmart, then claimed she’d found it half-eaten. A manager called police last week after the woman said she had found the cake that way and refused to pay full price at checkout. In January, another woman was banned from a different Walmart in Wichita Falls after she drove an electric shopping cart around the parking lot for hours while drinking wine from a Pringles can. (AP)
A Maryland farmer whose cow was stolen and brought to an animal sanctuary in Virginia is now accused of threatening the sanctuary’s owner. WJZ-TV reports that “Life With Pigs” owner Ryan Phillips filed a criminal complaint against Anthony Scott Braglio. The allegation stems from a phone call that Phillips secretly recorded after Baltimore County police recovered the stolen calf in May. Two women are charged with stealing the cow. (AP)

Sweets with a side of service BOWIE, MD. From a young age, Michael Platt loved two things: the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and cupcakes. He lingered by the “I Have a Dream” poster in his grandparents’ house. He memorized statistics about income inequality and childhood hunger. But he also spent afternoons at his computer in his Bowie, Md., home, awestruck by YouTube bakers who transformed eggs, flour and water into edible works of art. Inspired by Toms shoes’ onefor-one model, Platt founded a bakery at age 11. For every cupcake, cake or cookie that Platt sells, he donates another to the homeless and hungry. Twice a month, he heads to locations including domestic violence shelters, transitional housing and McPherson Square in the District to pass out goodies. Platt, now 13, calls his baking business Michaels Desserts. He left out the apostrophe as a reminder that he is baking for others, not himself. “I always wanted to have a

His mother said the period of time after the diagnosis was “very, very difficult,” and

Michael had to restrict his physical activity. That’s when he threw himself into baking, she said. Baking, Michael said, makes him feel calm. When Michael founded the business two years ago, his parents chipped in to purchase supplies and get things going. Now the home-based bakery funds itself. Most customers place their orders via Facebook. He sells roughly 75 cupcakes a month, four for $15, along with a dozen cookies and a dozen “chef’s choice” items — which, of course, means he must also make more than 100 treats to give away. Every month, Michael offers a “freedom fighter cupcake.” June’s freedom fighter was Maya Angelou, who gets a banana pudding cupcake because she loved that dessert, Michael said. October is reserved for Harriet Tubman, whose cupcake is mint chocolate chip because her nickname was “Minty.” MLK is the only person to have two months: January and February. His cupcake is stuffed with sweet potato pie filling because “that’s a traditional African American pie,” Danita Platt said. HANNAH NATANSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

July 4: Trump wants tanks THE DISTRICT President Trump has asked the Pentagon to marshal a broadening array of military hardware, including tanks and fighter jets, to showcase his planned Fourth of July address to the nation — dramatically escalating the gathering’s cost and sparking concerns about the potentially damaging impact on the Mall and other infrastructure. Trump, who had already ordered up a flyover by military aircraft including Air Force One and the Navy’s Blue Angels, has pressed to expand his “Salute to America” event further with an F-35 stealth fighter and the involvement of Marine Helicopter Squadron One, which flies the presidential helicopter, according to government officials who requested anonymity to speak frankly. He also pushed to bring military tanks to the site of his planned speech at the Lincoln Memorial, prompting National Park Service officials to warn that such a deployment could damage the site. Trump told reporters late Monday that “we’re going to have some tanks stationed outside.” According to a CNN report, defense officials said a small number of M1 Abrams tanks and other armored vehicles will participate in the celebrations but will not parade down Pennsylvania Avenue. But the use of such massive military hardware for Thursday’s celebration sparked criticism from D.C. officials, Democratic lawmakers and advocates of the Park Service, who noted the agency already faces an $11 billion maintenance backlog. The event also will freeze air traffic to and from Reagan

National Airport for more than two hours Thursday, from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. for the flyover of military jets and again from 9 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. to accommodate an extended fireworks show. In past years, flights at National have not been impacted by the fireworks, but the launch point was moved this year to accommodate Trump’s speech. The Defense Department has not released any estimates for how much the celebration could cost. But the use of numerous
Big spectacle expected Abrams tanks — which President Trump described as “Abram” tanks — weigh more than 60 tons and are usually transported over long distances by heavy rail. Trump also said “we have the brand new Sherman tanks,” which have not been in use by the American military since the 1950s. Meanwhile, the upcoming pyrotechnics show will include several new elements, including a massive American flag and “U.S.A.” spelled out in the sky. (TWP)

aircraft could drive it well into the millions of dollars when counting fuel and maintenance. The F-35 costs about $30,000 per hour to fly, according to Pentagon estimates. Each Blue Angel jet costs at least $10,000 per hour to operate, and the cost of flying an Air Force One jet is more than $140,000 per hour. The cost of a military parade Trump had planned for last year was about $92 million, including $50 million in Defense Department costs, defense officials said at the time. The parade was scuttled after the potential costs became public. At least 300 service members are slated to participate Thursday, primarily from military bands and drill teams, but that number could rise as additional military aircraft and other flourishes are added. Other details of the July 4 celebration remain up in the air. White House officials plan to give out tickets for attendees to sit in a VIP section and watch Trump’s speech but did not develop a distribution system before much of the staff left for Asia last week, according to two officials. Officials also are still working on other key crowd management details, such as how to get attendees through magnetometers in an orderly fashion. Trump has demonstrated unusual interest in this year’s Independence Day observance, according to three senior administration officials. He has received regular briefings from Interior Secretary David Bernhardt and has weighed in on how the pyrotechnics should be launched, how the military should be honored and more. The administration has organized a far more ambitious celebration than originally planned, at an unspecified additional cost. JULIET EILPERIN, JOSH DAWSEY AND
TRANSPORTATION Maryland said Monday that it is withholding $55.6 million from Metro because the transit system has refused to account for funds received earlier from the state in what it called “an ongoing pattern of fiscal obfuscation and a lack of cooperation.” The unexpected move signals that Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, R, plans to be more aggressive toward Metro on financial performance and governance. The state said it would not provide the capital funds, which were set to be delivered to Metro on Monday, in a letter from Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn. The letter arrived on the first day of Rahn’s Metro board tenure. He’s the first Cabinetlevel official in memory to represent Maryland or Virginia. Rahn said Metro hasn’t shown “how past allocations were spent and how additional funds will be spent in the future.” He also criticized Metro for “stonewalling” state audit efforts. Hogan and Metro have had an up-and-down relationship. He criticized former board chair Jack Evans. But Hogan ultimately supported last year’s agreement with Virginia and D.C. to provide $500 million a year to Metro. Metro spokesman Ian Jannetta said Metro “will meet with Maryland officials as soon as possible to fully understand and address the issues raised in their letter.” ROBERT MCCARTNEY

Effort to halt USDA relocation stalls Democrats running out of ways to stop move of D.C. offices to Midwest WASHINGTON Members of Congress representing D.C.-based federal workers whose jobs are about to be reassigned or moved to the Midwest are running out of ways to try to stop the Trump administration from moving those offices. Democratic lawmakers have written letters, bills and amendments to block the measures before the end of the fiscal year
on Sept. 30, with little success. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue last month finalized plans to move about 550 jobs at two scientific agencies in the Agriculture Department from Southwest D.C. to the Kansas City area. The administration has also threatened to furlough and possibly lay off 150 Office of Personnel Management employees if Congress won’t let the administration eliminate the department. Proponents of the changes say they want to save taxpayer money and spread the economic effects of federal jobs beyond

D.C. Opponents of the USDA move, including unions for federal workers, say the agencies will hemorrhage talent because many scientists and researchers would rather quit than move. House members visit migrant detention center

Aussie bee fly gets named for Night King
IMMIGRATION Lawmakers described how migrant women were being held in a cell with no running water and told by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to drink from a toilet at a Texas detention center amid widespread concerns about deplorable conditions. More than a dozen House members visited facilities in El Paso and Clint, Texas, on Monday — a trip that came on the same day as a news report that Border Patrol agents made vile posts that threatened lawmakers in a secret Facebook group. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus organized the trip after conditions at the Border Patrol station in Clint prompted an outcry last month, with lawyers who visited the facility describing scenes of sick and dirty children. After touring the detention centers, the group struggled to be heard at a news conference, confronted by protesters who shouted at them, “Build a wall; deport ’em all!” “Today we came and we saw that the system is still broken,” said Rep. Joaquin Castro, DTexas, chairman of the Hispanic Caucus. “These are the conditions that have been created by the Trump administration. These are the inhumane conditions that folks are facing.”

Trip came amid reports that border agents shared offensive posts
Conditions at the Border Patrol station in Clint, Texas, have drawn outrage.
Several lawmakers said that the El Paso facility appeared to have emptied out. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, who represents the area, said about 200 asylum-seeking women whom her staff had seen detained at the station as recently as last week were now gone. She said they may have been returned to Mexico under the program to remove asylum seekers while their claims are heard in U.S. courts. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., relayed that one woman said she was told by Border Patrol officers to drink out of the toilet. The visit came as Border Patrol officials scrambled to respond to a ProPublica report about the secret Facebook group

for current and former Border Patrol agents in which the participants discussed throwing burritos at the members of Congress. The current and former agents also joked in profane language about the deaths of migrants and posted a vulgar illustration of Ocasio-Cortez engaged in a sexual act with a detained migrant. In a statement, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said: “Any employees found to have violated our standards of conduct will be held accountable.” A separate statement from Customs and Border Protection said an investigation was initiated.
A newly discovered bee fly that thrives in winter and tuns other insects into “zombies” has been named after “Game of Thrones” villain the Night King, who has similar attributes, BBC News reported Monday. The Paramonovius nightking was originally discovered in Wandoo National Park in Western Australia in 2012, but wasn’t confirmed as a new species until recently. The fly, which resembles a bee, has only been found in winter. Females of the species lay eggs on other insects; when the eggs hatch, “they eat that insect from the inside out, turning them into walking zombies,” entomologist Bryan Lessard told BBC News. EU stumbling in effort to fill its critical jobs ANALYSIS After a choppy few years, European Union leaders had a precious opportunity Monday to show unity as they huddled to make appointments for prestigious jobs, people who will run the world’s biggest trading bloc over the next five years. Instead, leaders bickered, pointed fingers, organized unsuccessful backroom meetings to stake out narrow nationalist agendas and sought first and foremost to protect their own party political interests. “Our credibility is fundamentally stained by all these too-long meetings,” French President Emmanuel Macron said after an all-night summit fell apart without agreement on the top posts. Instead of highlighting a united “Team Europe,” to use Macron’s phrasing, EU leaders indulged in the kind of behindthe-scenes horse trading for Brussels jobs that has long raised the ire of anti-EU populists who claim the bloc is opaque and out of touch with the continent’s 500 million people, who need answers to urgent questions. German Chancellor Angela Merkel had little positive to say. “Today people find this pretty bad,” she said. “I can believe that and we’ll have to live with it.” To make matters worse, the leaders had already failed to agree on the top jobs at a summit less than two weeks ago. They will try yet again today. MIKE CORDER AND RAF CASERT (AP)

nation+world Breach raises pressure on countries trying to save nuclear deal TEHRAN, IRAN Iran has broken the limit set on its stockpile of low-enriched uranium by its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, international inspectors and Tehran said Monday, marking its first major departure from the unraveling agreement a year after the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the accord. The announcement by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and later confirmation by the U.N. nuclear watchdog put new pressure on European nations trying to save the deal amid President Trump’s maximalist

campaign targeting Tehran. Iran is separately threatening to raise its uranium enrichment closer to weapons-grade levels on July 7 if Europe fails to offer it a new deal. The announcement further heightens tensions across the Middle East in the wake of Iran recently shooting down a U.S. military surveillance drone, mysterious attacks on oil tankers that America and the Israelis blame on Tehran, and bomb-laden drone assaults by Yemen’s Iranian-backed rebels targeting Saudi Arabia. The European Union urged Iran to reverse course, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the action “a significant step toward making a nuclear weapon.” Iran long has

insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, despite Western fears about it. Though Trump pulled back
from airstrikes targeting Iran after the U.S. drone was shot down, Washington has rushed an aircraft carrier strike group, nuclear-capable B-52 bombers and thousands of additional troops to the region. That’s raised fears that a miscalculation or further incidents could push the two sides into an armed conflict. Speaking to journalists in Tehran, Zarif acknowledged Iran had broken through the limit set by the accord. “We had previously announced this and we have said it transparently what we are going to do,” Zarif said. “We are going to act according to what we have announced and we consider it our right reserved in the nuclear deal.”

KUSHIRO, JAPAN Japanese whalers returned to port Monday with their first catch after resuming commercial whaling for the first time in 31 years, achieving a longcherished goal of traditionalists that is seen as largely a lost cause amid slowing demand for the meat and changing views on conservation. Five boats left the northern Japanese port of Kushiro earlier Monday and brought back two minke whales. A crane lifted them and placed them on the back of a truck to be taken to a portside factory for processing. Workers in blue plastic overalls poured sake from paper cups onto the first whale to express thanks and cheer the first catch. It was the first commercial hunt since 1988, when Japan switched to what it called research whaling after the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling. Japan’s withdrawal from the IWC took effect Sunday. Japan’s Fisheries Agency said the hunts will stay within the country’s economic zone, and the catch quota for the rest of this year will be 227. The BBC reported that last year’s catch quota for research was 333. While many conservation groups condemned the resumption of commercial whaling, others see it as a facesaving way to let Japan’s fraught whaling program gradually succumb to changing times and tastes. HONG KONG Hundreds of protesters swarmed into Hong Kong’s legislature Monday night, defacing portraits of lawmakers and spray-painting pro-democracy slogans in the chamber before vacating it as riot police cleared surrounding streets with tear gas and then moved inside. The three-hour occupation, which ended early Tuesday, came on the 22nd anniversary of the former British colony’s return to China, a city holiday, and reflected mounting frustration with Hong Kong’s leader for not responding to protesters’ demands after several weeks of demonstrations. The protests were sparked by a government attempt to change extradition laws to allow suspects to be sent to China for trial. Protesters whacked away at thick glass windows until they shattered and then pried open steel security gates. Demonstrators stood on lawmakers’ desks and painted over the territory’s emblem on a wall. The crowd also wrote slogans calling for a democratic election of the city’s leader and denouncing the extradition legislation. Police then announced that they would soon move in. Officers approached shortly after midnight and entered the legislative chambers after protesters had already left. There was no word on any arrests or injuries. The actions prompted organizers of a separate peaceful march against the extradition bill to change the endpoint of their protest from the legislature to a nearby park, after police asked them to call it off or change the route. Police estimated 190,000 people joined the peaceful march, the third major one in as many weeks.
Police fire tear gas at demonstrators protesting an extradition bill near government headquarters in Hong Kong early Tuesday morning.
The extradition proposal has heightened fears of eroding freedoms in the territory, which Britain returned to China on July 1, 1997. Debate on the measure has been suspended indefinitely. Protesters want the bills formally
withdrawn and Hong Kong’s leader, Carrie Lam, to resign. Lam called a rare pre-dawn news conference with security officials at police headquarters. She noted that two entirely different protests happened Monday

— one a generally orderly march that reflected Hong Kong’s inclusiveness, the other using vandalism and violence. She disputed protesters’ complaints that officials had not responded to them, saying the government explained that by suspending the bill with no timetable or plan to revisit it, the legislation would die at the end of the current legislative session in July 2020. For the other demands, she said releasing arrested protesters without an investigation would not uphold the rule of law. Lam’s first public comments came Monday at the handover anniversary ceremony, where she said the protests had taught her that she needs to listen better to young people and others. She insisted her government has good intentions and pledged that future work would be “closer and more responsive to the aspirations, sentiments and opinions of the community.” KEN MORITSUGU (AP)

Day 1 winners and losers
Before the clock struck midnight Monday, the NBA’s 30 teams had combined to spend more than $3 billion in contract agreements in the wildest opening day to free agency in recent memory. Within 10 hours, 26 of The Washington Post’s top 30 NBA free agents had been picked up. Here’s a rundown of free agency’s early winners and losers. BEN GOLLIVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Winners: Nets
Losers: Knicks
Winners: Jazz
Losers: Warriors
There’s reason for caution when judging the Nets’ splashy haul and long-term outlook, but they cleanly netted Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to complete a remarkable turnaround. After spending most of the past decade as the NBA’s bleakest outpost, Brooklyn adds two of the league’s most entertaining players. Durant’s recovery from an Achilles injury will require patience and managed expectations, but the wait should be worth it.
The Nets get to enjoy a double celebration because their successes came directly at the expense of the crosstown Knicks. New York had painstakingly cleared salary cap room, even parting with Kristaps Porzingis, to pitch Durant and Irving on a team-up scenario. Instead, the Knicks whiffed, then incomprehensibly settled for three mediocre power forwards: Julius Randle, Taj Gibson and Bobby Portis.
The Jazz emerged as the darlings of NBA Twitter, earning kudos for their moves: Bojan Bogdanovic ($73 million over four years), Ed Davis ($10 million over two years) and the Mike Conley trade before the draft. Utah deserves the acclaim. It built a fearsome starting lineup — Conley, Donovan Mitchell, Joe Ingles, Bogdanovic and Rudy Gobert — with a balance of scoring, playmaking and shooting, while maintaining an elite defensive presence.
It’s now official: The injuries to Durant and Klay Thompson during the NBA Finals ended the “super villain” Warriors. Durant is gone to Brooklyn. Andre Iguodala was traded to Memphis. Shaun Livingston must go, and others will follow. Sunday was a funeral for an era. Golden State then shocked everyone with an aggressive retooling, agreeing to sign a fouryear, $117 million max contract with former Nets guard D’Angelo Russell.
Winners: 76ers
Losers: Celtics
Winners: Bucks
Losers: Hornets
Philly is a winner despite handing out the day’s most objectionable deal — $185 million over five years to Tobias Harris — and losing Jimmy Butler less than a year after acquiring him by trade. Why? Because the Sixers’ front office displayed impressive creativity, nabbing Miami’s Josh Richardson in a sign-and-trade for Butler and poaching Al Horford from Boston.
Danny Ainge deserves credit because it definitely could have been worse. Plugging in Kemba Walker to replace Irving was smart, and opening up a mid-level exception by participating in a signand-trade will come in handy when addressing Boston’s frontcourt holes. But Horford leaving for the Sixers is a major power shift in the rivalry between the franchises.
GM Jon Horst was in a tough spot, trying to keep together Giannis Antetokounmpo’s supporting cast. But Milwaukee managed to retain Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez and George Hill, while adding Robin Lopez for extra depth at center. The Bucks lost Nikola Mirotic to Spain, and Pacers-bound Malcolm Brogdon netted a first-round pick and two future second-round picks.
Charlotte’s summer took a turn for the demoralizing when it decided not to pay up for Kemba Walker. Losing a beloved franchise player is a tough blow, but things quickly got worse for the Hornets. Terry Rozier, their Walker replacement, arrived on a three-year, $58 million deal that was simply too rich for a player who will be one of the league’s worst starting point guards.

The Wizards on Monday executed a sign-and-trade deal sending point guard Tomas Satoransky to Chicago on a three-year, $30 million contract in exchange for future second-round draft picks. Washington agreed to terms with veteran point guard Ish Smith, far left, — most recently with the Pistons — who is expected to sign a guaranteed two-year deal for $12 million. Less than an hour after free agency started Sunday night, the Wizards agreed to re-sign center Thomas Bryant, left, for three years and $25 million. (TWP)

Osaka exits Wimbledon on first day Naomi Osaka, ranked No. 1 in the world until last week, lost to Yulia Putintseva 7-6 (4), 6-2 on Monday, the first day of Wimbledon. The second-seeded Osaka won the U.S. Open last year and the Australian Open this year, but she lost in the third round at the French Open. “I just don’t think I played that well,” she said. Osaka had 38 unforced errors on Centre Court, while Putintseva had only seven. Osaka left her news conference before any questions were asked in Japanese. “Can I leave?” she asked the moderator after several short answers. “I feel like I’m about to cry.” Also Monday, 15-year-old Coco Gauff managed a 6-4, 6-4 upset of Venus Williams. It was Gauff’s third tour-level match; Williams has played more than 1,000. (AP)

UNITED STATES VS. ENGLAND | 3 P.M. TODAY, FOX
England’s Bronze faces America’s Rapinoe in a matchup like no other WORLD CUP From an American perspective, the matchup that could determine the winner of the World Cup semifinal today will take place on the left side of the field. From the English point of view, it’s the right side.
Soccer matches aren’t typically settled by individual clashes. The U.S.-England showdown at Lyon’s sold-out, suburban stadium will likely come down to overall performance. But it is impossible to overlook the deliciousness of England’s Lucy Bronze crossing paths with American Megan Rapinoe. England coach Phil Neville calls Bronze the best player in the world, a high compliment

Her goal against Norway — a wicked one-timer from the top of the penalty area — is among the best of the tournament. Bronze attended youth camps at North Carolina and went on to play on the Tar Heels’ 2009 NCAA championship team that included U.S. star Tobin Heath. What makes Bronze special is an ability not just to join the attack but influence it. “She’s a very attacking-minded player,” U.S. coach Jill Ellis said. STEVEN GOFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CAPITALS The Capitals signed a four-year contract worth around $11 million with forward Richard Panik on Monday, the first day of NHL free agency. Panik, who played the last two seasons for Arizona, addresses the Capitals’ most pressing need in the lineup: third-line right wing. He’s expected to slot in with center Lars Eller and left
wing Carl Hagelin. Pending unrestricted free agent forward Brett Connolly, who scored a career-high 22 goals last season, signed a four-year, $13 million contract with the Panthers. His salary cap hit is expected to be $3.5 million, $1 million more than what Washington reportedly agreed to with Panik. Capitals GM Brian MacLellan said Saturday he suspected the team would be “priced out” on Connolly. Adding Panik follows Washington trading winger Andre Burakovsky, 24, to the Avalanche

on Friday for second- and thirdround picks in the 2020 draft. The Caps were on the hook for a $3.25 million qualifying offer to Burakovsky, a restricted free agent who had 12 goals and 13 assists each of the past two seasons. Panik will carry a smaller salary cap hit on his longer deal; the 28-year-old had 14 goals and 19 assists in 75 games with the Coyotes last season. He averaged 16:37 and logged 1:12 per game on the penalty kill, where he could have a role for Washington. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN

HEALTH ADVICE
The case for whole food NUTRITION Nearly everyone these days seems to be promoting whole foods over processed foods. But, until now, there has been scant scientific evidence to support the idea. In recent weeks, the British Medical Journal published two studies that found a lower risk of heart disease and greater longevity among adults who eat less processed food. And a rigorous investigation from the National Institutes of Health showed that subjects eating ultra-processed foods consumed significantly more calories and gained more weight than when they ate minimally processed or whole foods. The NIH paper, published in Cell Metabolism, offered some surprising theories to explain the benefits of minimally processed foods. The research was led by Kevin Hall, a mathematical modeler and obesity expert. It enrolled 20 healthy young adults who lived in a clinic setting for 28 days. For 14 days, subjects received either an ultra-processed or minimally processed diet; then they were switched to the other diet for 14 days. They were allowed to eat as much as they wanted. The results were eye-popping. Subjects consumed 500 calories per day more on the ultraprocessed diet than the minimally processed diet (about 3,000 calories a day versus 2,500 calories). As a result, they gained 2 pounds in 14 days. Subjects who began with 14 days of ultra-processed eating lost 2 pounds when they switched to minimally processed eating for the final 14 days. The ultra-processed diet wasn’t as junky as you might

New research offers insights into the benefits of eating a minimally processed diet
Processed vs. unprocessed Examples of processed (top) and unprocessed (bottom) meals used in the NIH study are shown. Investigators manipulated the diets to make them as alike as possible. Both diets contained the same relative percentages of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber, sugars, sodium and nutrients. This was accomplished, in part, by adding soluble fiber to beverages served on the ultra-processed diet, and making sure that the minimally processed diet included plenty of fresh fruit, high in natural sugars. think. It didn’t contain a lot of chips, candies and sodas, but rather convenience foods such as canned soups and grains in a pouch. “If the ultra-processed diets were allowed to vary in the expected way from the unprocessed diet, it might have led to a larger difference in calorie intake,” Hall commented by email. Why do processed foods induce more eating and weight gain than unprocessed foods? The researchers uncovered an interesting possibility. When eating ultra-processed foods, subjects consumed calories 50% faster. This probably happened because processed foods are easier to chew and swallow. They also contain more calories by volume. It takes about 20 minutes for the gut to release hormones that tell the brain we are getting full. When we eat quickly, our calorie consumption may race ahead of the gut-brain connection. The minimally processed diet also included more insoluble fiber than the ultra-processed diet. Insoluble fiber moves through the stomach and GI system without being broken down and absorbed by the body. “We speculated that the insoluble fiber content in the unprocessed diet may have led to reduced calorie absorption and increased satiety,” Hall said. He and his colleagues note that you can work minimally processed foods into “a wide variety of healthy dietary approaches including low-carb, lowfat, plant-based or animal-based diets.” In other words, choose the foods you want to focus on, and eat them in their whole or minimally processed form. Stop screens from stealing your sleep Even if you know that looking at a phone, tablet or computer screen at night is bad for your sleep, it can be hard to stop. So how can you keep it from keeping you up at night? First, get sunlight during the day. People who spend more time outside and get more daytime light sleep better, especially if they get that light early in the day. At night, reduce screen time. Ideally, shut down all screens at least an hour before bed. For those who won’t, glasses or apps may help. Glasses that block blue light are a better option than apps alone, because the right ones will cut out all light in the blue spectrum. If you’re using f.lux, Night Shift or other apps, turn the nighttime setting on all the way, which will make your screen appear orange. Also, turn down the brightness, as any bright light — even orange-hued — can suppress melatonin production. CONSUMER REPORTS (REPUBLISHED IN TWP)

Camp Grandma just isn’t cutting it
What’s on tonight?
Q. My husband’s mother believes she is going to continue the tradition of taking our kids (5 and 7) for several weeks every summer, like my husband did as a kid with his grandparents. But they lived in the country with nature to explore. My mother-in-law lives in a suburb and loves shopping, restaurants and movies. I know she loves her grandkids and I have no problem with visits, but I don’t see this idyllic summerwith-grandparents thing working out. I don’t want to hurt her, but there are a lot of better options and camps for my kids to do during the summer. My husband is very passive about talking to her about this.

The important themes here are kindness, love and tradition — so prioritize those as you establish new expectations. The longer you wait, the harder it will be for her to adjust. Express gratitude for her offer and for her desire to be part of their lives, and talk with your husband about possibilities for a special tradition that stops short of becoming Summer of the Mall. Maybe it’s just one week? Maybe they take a special
vacation together at a different locale? Maybe you find some particular experiences near her that meet your needs: zoo, nature center, museum or pool memberships? Then, suggest. “We’re excited to continue the special grandparent-grandkid bond that’s been so important in this family. Since schedules and circumstances are different this time around, here is what we had in mind for you and our kids. We know they’d have a blast with you.”
recently put on quite a bit of weight, and my husband and I are at odds about whether we should bring it up. He feels strongly that, because obesity and heart issues run in his family, we need to alert our son to the potential seriousness of this and help him get back on track. I feel like of course our son knows this, and it will only make him more ashamed and upset. He’s a grown man and our job is just to love him. I lean much more toward your side. Assuming he’s not totally in the dark about his specific genetic risks, I agree it’s doubtful there’s some special insight about weight or health that he doesn’t already know. That said, I don’t think total silence is necessary either. Significant weight gain could have not just troubling effects, but troubling causes too. Might he be depressed? Have a hormonal imbalance? Be sleeping poorly? There’s a sweet spot between the semi-critical nature of “You’ve put on weight and we’re concerned” and the vague dancing-around of “Is everything OK?” I won’t put those words in your mouth (for once!), but they will come to you when you establish a loving, listening conversation about how things are truly going in his life. Chances are, there’s something behind the weight gain. Be empathetic and loving as you try to figure out what it is. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Singing different tunes
If you recently took a cursory scroll through Twitter or Instagram, it’s very likely you saw a controversy erupting that involved Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Scooter Braun, a $300 million deal … and somehow, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West? It’s a complicated situation, and one that shows no signs of slowing down. Here’s everything to know. EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST) How did this start?
How did Swift react?
Who is Braun?
What’s Swift’s issue?
What did Bieber say?
On Sunday, news broke that talent manager Braun had signed a reported $300 million deal to buy Big Machine Label Group, the former home of Swift. The founder of BMLG is Scott Borchetta, who is famous for signing Swift to his label in 2005. As Swift’s career took off, she and Borchetta had a very lucrative partnership that lasted until this past November, when her contract expired and she decided to leave Big Machine to sign with Universal Music Group.
In a scathing Tumblr post, Swift expressed anger and disappointment — more specifically, that she was “grossed out” — that Braun was now the owner of Big Machine and, by extension, the masters (the rights to her songs) from her first six albums. “This is my worst case scenario,” she wrote. “When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter.”
He’s the entertainment mogul and manager best known for discovering Bieber on YouTube years ago and making him a superstar. Now he represents Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato and Carly Rae Jepsen. (He also used to represent Kanye West.) Unlike most music managers who operate behind the scenes, Braun has always stayed in the spotlight with his famous clients, and has more than 3 million followers on Instagram and nearly 4 million on Twitter.
Swift said she has been the target of “incessant, manipulative bullying” by Braun. As proof, she pointed to two of his clients: Bieber and West. Swift posted a screenshot of a 2016 Instagram photo from Bieber, which he posted during the worst backlash of her career, after Kardashian West leaked the recording of an infamous phone call between Swift and West. “Taylor swift what up,” Bieber captioned the taunting post that pictured a grinning Braun and West.
In an Instagram caption, Bieber apologized for the “hurtful” 2016 photo but added that Braun had nothing to do with that post. Then Bieber went a step further, saying that Swift was in the wrong because she knew that posting a public takedown would result in her fans bullying Braun. “Neither scooter or i have anything negative to say about you we truly want the best for you,” he wrote. As of Monday afternoon, Braun had not yet spoken about the controversy.

The Black Keys go back to their rockin’ roots ALBUM REVIEW The Black Keys are back with a return to their roots. And just in case their opening song doesn’t make that clear enough, the album’s title — “Let’s Rock” — spells out their intention. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have made rock with a bluesy-funk undertone their specialty. While they may have ventured from this sound slightly on their last album, 2014’s ambient and psychedelic “Turn Blue,” they’ve returned to it in full force and to full effect on their ninth LP, “Let’s Rock,” which came out Friday. Opener “Shine a Little Light” is appropriately bright and upbeat, entering with a blues rock feel before changing gears into a more garage rock sound for the chorus. It’s followed by “Eagle Birds,” a track equally reminiscent of the Keys’ sound on 2010’s “Brothers” and 2011’s “El Camino.” While the Keys have returned to their catchy, provocative riffs, “Let’s Rock” leans closer to their more recent albums than their earlier, grittier sound. Softer songs like “Walk Across the Water” and the Beatles-sounding “Sit Around and Miss You” bring depth to the album. From top to bottom, the 12-track record holds tight to captivating instrumentation, with guitar at the center. The Black Keys are rock royalty and, to the relief of many, they aren’t quite ready to relinquish their reign. RAGAN CLARK (AP)

@PABLOTORRE, joking about the New York Knicks’ tumultuouss first day of
NBA free agency, in which All-Stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving ng decided to sign with the Brooklyn Nets over their crosstown rival. For weeks, eeks, Knicks fans had been confident their team would acquire the two free agents. But according to ESPN, New York’s front office wasn’t prepared to offer Durant a full max contract and didn’t even get a meeting with the former rmer MVP. While most ripped the organization, some Knicks fans tried to o find some silver lining, noting Durant’s Achilles injury and Irving’s attitude. titude.
“I loved drawing cartoons for my home province. I’m a proud New Brunswicker. I will survive.” CARTOONIST MICHAEL DE ADDER,
revealing on Twitter that he’d been fired from Brunswick News Inc. for his cartoon of President Trump standing next to a golf cart and asking a drowned migrant father and child if he could “play through.” The Canadian company said it was “incorrect” to assume the cartoon caused his firing, though action was taken two days after it was published.

@BRENDANF0RD, reacting to the first trailer for “Jumanji: The Next Level.” Fans of its 2017 predecessor were thrilled by the sequel’s trailer, especially the revelation The Rock would be impersonating Danny DeVito after the latter gets sucked into the game. Similarly, Kevin Hart is impersonating Danny Glover.
“Bobby Bonilla should be in the Hall of Fame for this contract alone.” @KENNEDEMON, celebrating Bobby
Bonilla Day. In 2000, the New York Mets agreed to buy out the player’s contract over a 25-year span rather than pay him the $5.9 million left on his deal all at once, as is customary. So every July 1 from 2011 to 2035, the Mets owe $1,193,248.20 to Bonilla, now 56, who hasn’t played since 2001.

TODAY: The sun beats down and it turns hot rather quickly. Highs head for the low to mid-90s and it becomes moderately humid, with dew points rising into the mid- to upper 60s. We’ll probably end up dry but can’t rule out a lateafternoon storm. It’ll be muggy this evening, with lows in the upper 60s to mid-70s.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) What begins as a game becomes quite serious before the day is out — but that’s not likely to surprise you. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your behavior isn’t likely to please everyone today, but that’s not your motivation — you want to knock some people off-balance.
