One last night on the Town THE DISTRICT They came wearing jean cutoffs and crop tops and red bandanas. Or boat shoes and pastel polos and backward caps. A few came wearing almost nothing at all — skimpy briefs, maybe a leather harness. In a line that wrapped halfway around the block, hundreds waited for hours to celebrate one last time at Town Danceboutique, a gay nightclub off U Street NW that has fallen victim to the gentrification it helped to spur in the area. Two years ago, the two-story complex was sold to a developer who plans to build upscale apartments. Since 2007, Town has been the largest entertainment venue in the nation’s capital catering to the LGBTQ community. Those who came this weekend said it was a space — no, the space — where they felt welcome. “They’re just accepting of everybody,” said Hunter Young, an architect out to celebrate his 26th birthday. “I’ve come here dressed as masculine as possible

and in drag. I’ve had eye makeup done up. I’ve come in all facets and they’re like, ‘Yes, come on in, you’re welcome here. Just be you.’ ” Owner John Guggenmos said he and his business partners have owned a dozen nightclubs in the District over the past 28 years, but they have not found a location for a club to succeed Town. “It’s the first time I don’t know what’s about to happen next,” Guggenmos said. “You know how

The lights are about to come up.” On the club’s expansive patio Friday night, Patrick Kane, 23, recalled coming to Town’s 18-plus nights as a freshman at George Washington University. One weekend, he brought his older sister, who did not yet know he was gay. When the siblings returned to Town four years later, Kane’s sister realized the nightclub had been her brother’s way of coming out. Other 18-year-olds, Kane said, will no longer have the option. “Where can they come to say, ... ‘This is my moment to tell you what and who I am’?” Kane said. In the backstage area on the first floor, littered with feather boas and sequins, performer Ba’Naka took off her poofy red wig one final time at Town. “What are they turning this into? Condos? Cause that’s what D.C. needs,” she quipped, dabbing with a cotton pad at the thick coat of foundation on her face. “Let’s do it, girl, more glass buildings that are ugly.” She started to cry. Pop-up bus lane driving optimism in the District New route will shuttle riders while Red Line stations are shut down TRANSPORTATION Starting this month, up to 60 buses an hour will zip through a new dedicated bus lane along Rhode Island Avenue, according to the District Department of Transportation, filling a gap in train service prompted by a six-week shutdown of the Red Line’s Brookland and Rhode Island Avenue stations. The new pop-up lane has transit advocates abuzz about the

possibilities for the future of the region’s bus system, which lags behind in its lack of an extensive network of bus lanes. Dedicated bus lanes speed travel, making riding the bus a more predictable and reliable experience. To some, DDOT’s experiment hints at larger developments to come — beyond the launch of rush-hour bus lanes along the 16th Street corridor beginning in 2020. “It shows how quickly you can pop up something like this,” said Stewart Schwartz, executive director of the pro-transit Coalition for Smarter Growth. “Stripe it and

DDOT has not ruled out making the bus lane permanent, though it would not do so immediately in September. For now, it will be D.C.’s longest and busiest bus lane, the agency says. FAIZ SIDDIQUI

Lyft is getting into the bike-share business, announcing Monday that it has acquired the nation’s largest bike-share operator, Motivate, in a deal believed to be valued at some $250 million. Motivate is the operator of Capital Bikeshare and New York’s Citi Bike, among other bikeshare services. Lyft plans to introduce “Lyft Bikes,” seizing on the momentum around dockless and pedal-assist e-bikes in major U.S. cities, but did not say where it plans to launch them. It was unclear how the Lyft deal would affect Motivate-operated Capital Bikeshare. The city did not respond to questions on how Capital Bikeshare could be affected. Since launching with 100 stations and just over 1,000 bikes in 2010, Capital Bikeshare has grown to 4,300 bikes and 500 stations. (TWP)

local Metro expands internet service, but connection in tunnels is still spotty DC RIDER James Logan’s appreciation for Metro’s Wi-Fi service came with a catch. service to a crawl. Metro announced last week that it had finished work to provide Wi-Fi to the last batch of 17 underground stations, after saying in December that coverage was available at 30 of the underground stations. The service is expected to come to above-ground stations by the end of the year. While some applauded the changes, others were disappointed that cell service is only available in about a third of Metro tunnels. Separate from providing Wi-Fi at stations, Metro said it has expanded the area where AT&T,

Lopez Obrador wins Mexican presidency

Study: Coffee may increase your longevity

MEXICO CITY As votes were tallied Monday following a historic election, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador appeared close to gaining control of Congress as well as the presidency — a resounding mandate for the country’s first leftist leader in decades. Lopez Obrador won more than 50 percent of the vote, the most in the history of Mexico’s multiparty democracy, according to incomplete returns. The electoral results will give him broad power to reshape public policy, which has largely been set by proAmerican, free-market-oriented politicians in recent decades. The peso dropped about 1 percent on news of his victory, not as dramatic a slide as some had predicted, but a sign the markets are skeptical of Lopez Obrador’s platform, which features a surge in spending on welfare programs. In a speech late Sunday, Lopez Obrador tried to quell concerns, saying he would not increase taxes or the public debt and would respect the country’s private sector. Preliminary results suggested members of his Morena party would take at least 260 of the 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower lo house of

Congress, and roughly 65 of 128 seats in the Senate. Lopez Obrador, 64, a longtime leftist standard-bearer and former mayor of Mexico City, scored a stunning victory by promising to battle corruption and improve the lives of the poor. He has pledged to increase subsidies to the elderly and people with disabilities, provide scholarships to students and reexamine a 2013 restructuring to liberalize Mexico’s state-run oil industry. In his victory speeches, Lopez Obrador called on Mexicans to reconcile and said his government would represent all citizens.

“We will respect everyone,” he said at a downtown hotel. “But we will give preference to the most humble and forgotten.” Critics warn that the new president will be more combative toward the U.S. than current president Enrique Peña Nieto, and that the conflict could escalate if Lopez Obrador fights with President Trump. In prior years, Lopez Obrador was a critic of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), but he and his team have insisted they want to preserve it and maintain good relations with Trump. New research finds that drinking coffee might increase your chances of a longer life. In a study of nearly 500,000 British adults, published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, coffee drinkers were found to be 10 to 15 percent less likely to die over 10 years than abstainers. The apparent benefit was seen with instant, ground and decaffeinated coffee. Lead author Erikka Loftfield, a researcher at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, said coffee contains over 1,000 chemical compounds including antioxidants, which protect cells from damage. Other studies suggest that substances in coffee may reduce inflammation. (AP)

U.S. agencies broaden probe of Facebook TECHNOLOGY A federal investigation into Facebook’s sharing of data with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica has broadened to focus on the actions and statements of the tech giant and involves three agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to people familiar with the official inquiries. Representatives of the FBI, the SEC and the Federal Trade Commission have joined the Justice Department in its inquiries about the two companies and the sharing of personal information of 71 million Americans, suggesting the wide-ranging nature of the investigation, said five people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. These people added that the emphasis has been on what Facebook has reported publicly about its sharing of information with Cambridge Analytica, whether those representations square with the underlying facts and whether Facebook made sufficiently complete and timely disclosures to the public and investors about the matter. The Capitol Hill testimony of Facebook officials, including chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, also is being scrutinized as part of the probe. nation+world Official: Implementing plan might lead to huge retaliation against U.S. POLITICS The European Union on Monday slammed the Trump administration for considering tariffs on auto imports, saying they could lead to global retaliation against some $300 billion in U.S. goods amid signs of a trade war. European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said the U.S. investigation into the possibility of auto tariffs “lacks legitimacy, factual basis and violates international trade rules,” just like last month’s U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The EU sent comments to

the U.S. for consideration in the Department of Commerce investigation into whether auto imports pose enough of a threat to U.S. national security to justify tariffs. President Trump cited national security concerns for the previous tariffs. The EU, which called the move “pure protectionism,” introduced duties on U.S. products, as did Mexico, Canada, Turkey and India. “ E u r o p e a n c a r s d o n ot threaten or impair the health of the U.S. industry and economy,” Schinas said. Last week, European Council President Donald Tusk warned that Trump’s policies are harming transatlantic relations and that “we must be ready to prepare our Union for worst-case scenarios.” EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said that while the EU does have higher tariffs on cars than the U.S. — around 10 percent versus 2 percent — the tariffs apply only to a fraction of the car market, around 15 percent. Despite questioning the probe’s legitimacy, the EU has requested to take part in a Commerce public hearing July 19-20.

July Fourth at church? A new generation of Christians is debating the conflation of religion and patriotism Rescuers find missing boys and coach alive

to be evangelical or charismatic than Catholic, some experts on Christianity in America said, though it’s not uncommon for Sunday Mass around the holiday to close with a patriotic tune such as “America the Beautiful.” In 2016, LifeWay Research, an arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, found that 61 percent of Protestant pastors agreed that it was “important for July Fourth worship services to incorporate patriotic elements to celebrate America.” Fifty-three percent of pastors in that survey agreed that their congregation “sometimes seems to love America more than God.” William Kynes, senior pastor of Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Annandale, Va., said he had not even thought about addressing July Fourth. “I don’t see it as a Christian holiday. I feel the same way about Mother’s Day,” he said. MICHELLE

MAE SAI, THAILAND Rescuers found all 12 boys and their soccer coach alive deep inside a partially flooded cave in northern Thailand late Monday, more than a week after they disappeared and touched off a desperate search that drew international help and captivated the nation. Video released early Tuesday by the Thai navy showed the boys in their soccer uniforms sitting on a dry area in the cave. Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said the 13 were in the process of being rescued. Rescue divers had spent much of Monday making preparations for a final push to locate the lost soccer players, ages 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach. They disappeared when flooding trapped them in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave June 23. Narongsak said the divers located the group about 300400 meters past a section of the cave that was on higher ground. “When the medics have evaluated the kids to see if their health is in good condition, we will care for them until they have enough strength to move by themselves, and then we will evaluate the situation on bringing them out again later,” Narongsak said. Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha thanked the international experts and rescuers who helped locate the missing for their “tremendous efforts.”

RELIGION Patriotic church services this time of year were so common in the early republic that the Episcopal Church’s national convention in 1786 resolved that “the Fourth of July shall be observed by this church forever, as a day of Thanksgiving to almighty God for the inestimable blessings of Religious and Civil Liberty vouchsafed to the USA,” according to a book about the denomination. Over the centuries, what it meant to celebrate July Fourth in church has changed and been debated. In recent years, the debate has been especially heated, with Christians disagreeing strongly on whether conflating God and country is a right or a heresy. On the Sunday that preceded July Fourth, many Christians expected and experienced a patriotic bonanza, with flags waving, tributes to political and military leaders, and songs. The evangelical news magazine Christianity Today this week listed the “top patriotic songs sung in churches,” according to Christian Copyright Licensing International. Among the 10 are “America the Beautiful” (No. 1) and “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood (No. 5). The story noted that First Baptist Church of Dallas, a megachurch led by Trump adviser Robert Jeffress, has performed “Make America Great Again,” a hymn composed by one of the ministers and promoted multiple times last July by Trump. But criticisms of July Fourthconnected church events seem to have grown louder in recent years, a reflection of anxiety among younger Christian leaders who think the idea of Christian nationalism can be problematic. “When you add that patriotic song, display that flag, or invite the politician to offer a

Jesus commissioned us to ‘Go into all nations.’ That means he was establishing a people not bound or defined or constrained by this world’s national borders,” Jonathan Leeman, an elder at Cheverly Baptist Church near Washington, wrote this week on the Gospel Coalition, a blog popular with conservative evangelicals. Thinking about July Fourth church services feels especially fraught these days, Leeman said. “The culture wars in America today indicate more and more people identify as non-Christian. With that comes the fact that many Christians have to reconcile their own Christian identity with their national identity in ways they didn’t have to before,” he said in an interview. Rooted in history Debates about how churches handle July 4 began surfacing early in U.S. history. Catherine Brekus, a Harvard University historian, noted that in the early 1800s, Methodists opposed Fourth of July celebrations on the grounds that they were not Christian. By the 1850s in Cleveland, Protestant ministers “usually took the lead in organizing Fourth of July activities, and speeches were given in churches,” Brekus said. “After the 1850s, ministers still gave benedictions, but the ceremonies were usually held outdoors, and commercial leaders and businesses were prominently involved.” (TWP)

LeBron James now faces the pressure of playing for one of the NBA’s most decorated teams.

Rivers eager to join cast in Washington

JERRY BREWER | THE WASHINGTON POST

LeBron has limits: Lakers aren’t yet all the way ‘back’ It’s no surprise that the Los Angeles Lakers snagged LeBron James. They were the overwhelming favorite to acquire him. Both parties have been eyeing each other for years. James owns two homes in L.A., and he aspires to be an entertainment mogul. As the NBA’s most glamorous franchise, the Lakers live superstar to superstar. This is a match made in hoop and hoopla heaven. Yet it’s still stunning that James agreed so quickly, on the first day of free agency, and with so much uncertainty on his new roster. James isn’t coming with Paul George, who is staying in Oklahoma City. L.A. hasn’t finagled Kawhi Leonard

from San Antonio. ESPN reported Monday that the Lakers agreed to sign point guard Rajon Rondo on a oneyear, $9 million deal. The club had already agreed to re-sign underachieving Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and add James’ former antagonist, Lance Stephenson, as well as Javale McGee. But LeBron is still basically alone, baby-sitting Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and the rest of the kids. L.A. can now sacrifice any or all of their youngsters for Leonard or another All-Star, but there are no guarantees. Still, James’ arrival represents the end of a five-year competitive coma. In their first 65 seasons, the franchise missed the playoffs just five times. For the past five postseasons, the Lakers have been

sitting at home. With James on board, the Lakers are relevant again. He is so great that he can take the current raw cast and make it a playoff team. But are the Lakers back? Well, let’s not go that far. For Los Angeles, “back” means championships. James could be the start of a titleworthy roster, but there’s much work to do to compete with Golden State. After spending 15 seasons in the Eastern Conference, making nine Finals appearances and winning three titles, James is moving to the West. As the East rejoices and the

Boston-Philadelphia rivalry takes center stage again, James will have a difficult time getting to the Finals. He might have a tough time getting to the conference finals, because that means beating Golden State or Houston. At 33 years old, James signed a four-year, $153.3 million deal, his longest contract since 2010. This is his last stand, with a brand that demands multiple titles of its superstars, on a stage on which Kobe Bryant dominated not long ago. James’ legacy as a top-five player in NBA history is res secure. But there will be pressure, more than he would have e felt anywhere else. To have g, he the best Hollywood ending, d must beat the Warriors and n kiss another Larry O’Brien Trophy, if not two. e For the love of Kobe, the ers’ King must add to the Lakers’ 16-title collection. James, always fidgety, was destined to make another ght move. Perhaps it’s only right that he chose a franchise, despite its recent struggles, that always wants more.

Speaking to reporters Monday at Capital One Arena, guard Austin Rivers shared the raw emotions that he felt upon learning that he was being traded by the Clippers, the team coached by his father, Doc Rivers. Then, Austin explained, his shock turned to enthusiasm when he learned he’d be joining the Wizards, who would send Marcin Gortat to L.A. Rivers, 25, grew up competing against Bradley Beal and spent the past few weeks working out in Miami with the same trainer as John Wall. After working on his defense and shooting for six pro seasons, Rivers is eager to join players in similar stages of life and career. “Very excited to be here,” Rivers said Monday. “It’s It s like an old AAU team.” (TWP)

Rooney: I came to D.C. ‘to win’ D.C. United held an introductory news conference for Wayne Rooney on Monday, and the high-profile English Premier League import insisted he hasn’t come to MLS to play out the rest of his career in comfort. “I’m here to compete,” the 32-year-old said. “I’m here to win. That’s the way I’ve always played.” Rooney has started practicing, and the focus has been on ensuring he is fit for United’s Audi Field opener July 14. D.C. has won only two games and sits in last place in the Eastern Conference. “I think there’s talent on the team,” Rooney said. “... I can help them.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Inconsistent Stephens loses another opener

Federer inks $300M deal, wins wearing Uniqlo gear

Sloane Stephens’ Grand Slam career has fallen into an all-ornothing pattern: She alternates runs to the final with first-round losses. On Monday in London, it was time for another early exit. Stephens bowed out of Wimbledon in the first round for the second straight year with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to 55th-ranked Donna Vekic of Croatia. “My feet were a little bit slow,” Stephens said. “Sometimes it happens. There’s nothing more, nothing less to it.” The No. 4 seed won the U.S. Open last year, then lost in the first round at the Australian Open before making the French Open final last month. (AP)

Top-seeded Roger Federer debuted a new look as he opened his Wimbledon title defense with a straight-set win over Dusan Lajovic on Monday in London. The Swiss star, whose longtime apparel deal with Nike expired in March, walked onto Centre Court sporting the red and white square logo of Japanese brand Uniqlo on his jacket, shirt, headband and socks. Federer, 36, signed his contract with Nike in 1997 and had been wearing the brand ever since. ESPN reported that the Uniqlo deal is for more than $300 million guaranteed over 10 years and lets Federer sell sponsor patches on his shirt. (AP)

Neymar takes center stage

GETTY IMAGES

10 a.m. in St. Petersburg, FS1

With the exception of national team legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic, no one’s talking about Sweden as a favorite to win the title. But the Swedes could earn more respect by beating Switzerland. The Zlatan-free team lacks individual stars — captain Andreas Granqvist is the leading scorer with two goals — and has built its identity on rugged defense, with clean sheets against both Mexico and South Korea. The Swiss won’t have captain Stephan Lichtsteiner or fellow defender Fabian Schar, each of whom has two yellow cards. Switzerland hasn’t been to the World Cup quarterfinals since 1954. (AP)

round of 16 at every tournament over the same period. The last time Mexico reached a quarterfinal was when it hosted in 1986. Mexico opened with a win over Germany, setting the defending champion on a path to an early

exit. But El Tri couldn’t find a way to stop Neymar. “He’s very agile. He’s very fast,” Brazil coach Tite said. “Is it wrong to feign, to provoke the players in the last third? It’s not a sin.” ROB HARRIS (AP)

AP

BRAZIL 2, MEXICO 0 Flaunting his flair and his finishing touch wasn’t enough. Neymar put his theatrics on display, too. In Brazil’s 2-0 victory over Mexico on Monday in Samara, Russia, the striker showed that his wild side is going nowhere at this year’s World Cup. Neither is Brazil, which will face Belgium on Friday in the quarterfinals. “I don’t much care for criticism,” Neymar said, “not even for praise.” With a goal and an assist, Neymar propelled Brazil in a tournament it has won five times. He also extended his platform to show the world he is as good — or better than — Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who are both out of the tournament. Neymar, who has two goals in four games in Russia, entered the World Cup after a three-month recovery from a broken right foot. And it was the right foot

that helped break down Mexico. After releasing Willian with a back-heel, Neymar raced into the penalty area and slid to tap a returning cross into the net. While his scoring is so often the focus, Neymar also creates for teammates. A toe-poked attempt to beat Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in the 88th minute was diverted toward Roberto Firmino, who scored easily. Neymar has 11 goals and nine assists in his past 19 games for Brazil. Before setting up the second goal it looked like his game — or even his World Cup — could be over with 20 minutes to go. It turned out to be pure histrionics. Writhing in agony after his right ankle was stepped on by Miguel Layun, Neymar managed to get up. But not before trying to step on Layun. Neymar was asked after the match if he was a diva trying to draw fouls. “I think it’s more an attempt to undermine me than anything else,” Neymar responded. Brazil has made the quarterfinals at every World Cup since 1994. Mexico has now lost in the

Belgian substitute Nacer Chadli capped a comeback from a twogoal deficit when he scored in the fourth minute of injury time to deliver a 3-2 victory over Japan on Monday in Rostov. Japan led 2-0 on early second-half goals by Genki Haraguchi and Takashi Inui. Jan Vertonghen then scored with a looping header that dropped in under the crossbar in the 69th minute. Substitute Marouane Fellaini headed in another from Eden Hazard’s cross in the 74th. (AP)

This year’s World Cup has shown a progressive attitude toward players missing time on paternity leave. England’s Fabian Delph, right, is expected to be the third player of the tournament to get the blessing of his team to miss a match while he awaits the birth of a child. “Some things in life are more important than football,” England coach Gareth Southgate said Monday. When Harry Kane takes the field for England it will be his first match in nine days. He’s still the leading scorer at the World Cup. Meanwhile, Colombia forward James Rodriguez — the top scorer in Brazil four years ago — hasn’t found the net, and it’s not certain he’ll get a chance to change that against England because of a calf injury. Kane has five goals in the tournament while Rodriguez has shown only uneven, injury-interrupted play. England rested Kane and seven other regulars in its group finale against Belgium when both teams were assured of advancing. (AP)

NEW DRUG

Goodbye sweaty armpits?

Workouts may fight mood disorders as well as medication does EXERCISE Do you go for a run to clear your head? Do you lift weights or do yoga to de-stress? If so, you are on the right track, according to a growing body of research that shows that exercise can be as effective as medication and psychotherapy in treating mood disorders, depression and anxiety. “When we compare exercise with other treatments for depression and anxiety, we get a tie,” says Michael Otto, professor of psychology and brain sciences at Boston University. “But unlike medication, with exercise you get only positive side effects.” Some antidepressant medication can cause side effects that include blurred vision, insomnia, weight gain and decreased sex drive. Exercise, on the other hand, has been shown to reduce blood pressure, improve cognitive function, maintain or reduce body weight, regulate blood sugar and improve sleep, says Otto, co-author of “Exercise for Mood and Anxiety: Proven Strategies for Overcoming Depression and Enhancing Well-Being.” “Imagine if we could put all that into a pill,” Otto says.

“Exercise is not what every ery primary care [doctor] prescribes bes for depression. But it should be,” says Annie Way, a primary care are physician for the University y of Virginia Health System. “Exerercise is a key component for every ery depressed patient.” eat Prescribing exercise to treat depression is not as easy as s it might sound, however, says Jasasper Smits, a psychology profesessor at the University of Texas xas at Austin and a spokesman for the Anxiety and Depression ion Association of America. “Most ost physicians and counselors are not trained in exercise intervention,” ” says Smits, co-author of “Exercise for Mood and Anxiety.” “Plus, it’s a lot more challenging to exercise than it is to take medication.” Most research regarding mood and exercise has involved moderate aerobic exercise, finding a benefit at 30- to 40-minute sessions conducted four or five times a week. (A moderate level of activity is when you can talk while exercising.) But there is some indication that more vigorous workouts — such as interval training, which alternates periods of high-intensity exercise with recovery periods — are better suited for people with anxiety, Smits says. “High-intensity workouts create responses in the body that mimic the symptoms of anxiety,” Smits says. This is key, he

More benefits Along with improving anxiety symptoms, exercise provides a sense of achievement and self-confidence. Exercise also strengthens a person’s ability to cope with life issues positively (instead of negatively, such as by overeating or drinking alcohol) and releases endorphins. And it contributes to mindfulness: When we exercise, our brain refocuses, especially if the workout is strenuous and requires concentration. G.B.

If walking 30 to 40 minutes four times a week, much less running intervals, sounds like a tall order, don’t fret. No one is expecting you to get off the couch and start rt sprinting. In fact, that would be e inadvisable. “Patients need to set et realistic goals,” Way says. “Just st he start doing something. Take the stairs at work. Get up from your ur desk every 30 minutes and walk k around.” Gradually increase the he duration and intensity until you u get to 150 minutes a week or more. e. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved the first drug developed specifically to reduce excessive underarm sweating, a common condition that can cause people anxiety and affect their social lives. Qbrexza will be available in October. The drug is infused in a cloth wiped over the skin daily to block sweat glands from activating. Its manufacturer, Dermira Inc., refused to disclose the price, as drugmakers normally do. Dermira said in one study that 53 percent of patients reported Qbrexza reduced sweat production by roughly half, versus 28 percent in a comparison group using a nonmedicated cloth. LINDA A. Q. A friend of mine (“Sarah”)

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Her eating habits are gnawing at me Q. My daughter and her best friend, rising juniors in college, are living at our home this summer for D.C. internships. The friend is respectful but has atrocious eating habits. She has put on significant weight and is always bringing sodas and candy into our home. As a mother responsible for this child, I can’t watch her have such unhealthy habits. How should I handle this? CONCERNED PARENT First things first. She is not a “child.” She is a gainfully employed (er, internshipped) college student. And you are “responsible for her,” yes, but only in the sense of providing shelter that, say, doesn’t include a steady flow of carbon monoxide. You are not responsible for her in terms of micromanaging her riboflavin intake. Are you grossed out by her? That much is clear

and, yes, it is your home. But it sounds like the problematic behavior isn’t technically making her a poor houseguest. I urge you to try to suspend your judgment. I won’t argue that she’s taking fabulous care of herself or that her habits are healthful, but I will contend that not only is it not your right to intrude, but that in doing so you can damage several relationships — your daughter’s included.

told me that a mutual friend (“Michelle”) is having problems with her husband and that they’re on the brink of divorce. Sarah has sworn me to secrecy. I had no idea! I thought I was closer with Michelle, and I’m hurt that she is not confiding in me. I want to be there for her, because I think she would tell me, so I want to ask. But Sarah made me promise not to. HELP! So you think she would tell you. But, my dear, she hasn’t. That doesn’t mean that she won’t, but there are many complicated possibilities here, from Sarah’s exaggerating the whole thing, to her finding out in some illicit way, to — I know it’s hurtful — Michelle having a different type of relationship with Sarah than you realized. But I can’t manufacture a way for you to ask Michelle without going against Sarah’s confidence and jeopardizing all of the relationships involved. Of course, Sarah shouldn’t have told you in the first place, but now that the cat’s out of the bag, you’ve got to hold it, even if it scratches you. If you want to support Michelle, just be the empathetic, kind friend that everyone should be — pending divorce or not. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Drake’s stuck on auto-replay The rapper serves up 25 tracks of rehashed drivel on ‘Scorpion’ ALBUM REVIEW This new Drake album is way too long, and civilization might collapse at any moment, so we’ll make this quick. First, if the arrival of Drake’s big, fat “Scorpion” this past Friday hinted at anything meaningful, it might be the terminus of artist-as-brand. Let’s say you’re in the business of bottling Coca-Cola. You’re never going to change that recipe — which means you need to change the advertising incessantly. So voila. Here’s an epic double-album, a colossal 25 tracks, an odyssey even lengthier than Drake’s

previous emo-quests. And when you pop the top? Same old fizz. We’ve memorized the ingredients by now: melody-bruised grievances about how rap’s leading superstar feels resented for his success, and how he’s been done dirty by disloyal backstabbers, and how he’s building a legacy that only the smart people of the future will fully appreciate, and how the women in his life use their Instagram accounts to express the emptiness in their souls, and how Drake uses his Instagram account to lurk on them. After sinking us 90 minutes deeper into our Stockholm syndrome, the album ends with our captor wistfully singing from behind a piano about how he’s “changing from boy to a man.” Drake is 31 years old.

A parade of guest stars There are a lot of famous voices on Drake’s “Scorpion.” Michael Jackson vocals appear in the chorus and outro on “Don’t Matter to Me.” Static Major and Ty Dolla $ign are both on “After Dark.” JAY-Z contributes a guest verse on “Talk Up.” We also hear a snippet of Nicki Minaj on “That’s How You Feel,” and Mariah Carey gets sampled on “Emotionless.” ELAHE IZADI (TWP)

The album’s other major selling point is that he’s also suddenly a dad — big news broken by rival rapper and scrupulous opposition researcher Pusha T in May. Drake’s reply? It appears roughly 10 minutes into “Scorpion”: “I wasn’t hiding my kid from the

world,” he explains. “I was hiding the world from my kid.” So that’s new. Otherwise, Drake is content to rehash his familiar sorrows as he sleepwalks down the same melodic paths that’s he’s been following since 2011’s “Take Care.” The only moments he sounds truly engaged with the music on “Scorpion” are when he’s playing mockingbird — channeling 21 Savage’s sour grumbles on “Nonstop” or pantomiming Young Thug’s staccato chirp on “Mob Ties.” And if we squint very hard, this might count as a new shade of blue for Drake. Hearing him do impersonations of more inventive artists is a specific kind of sadness that we usually see only on late-night television. CHRIS RICHARDS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Florence + the Machine blend hope and regret ALBUM REVIEW ”High as Hope” could be seen as Florence Welch’s quarter-life crisis album. The 31-year-old Florence + the Machine frontwoman has had some ups and downs since breaking out in 2009 with the debut album “Lungs.” There have been three U.K. charttopping albums, but also detours into alcohol and self-doubt. On “High as Hope,” which was released Friday, Welch picks over her sometimes misspent youth and looks ahead with tentative hope. Lyrically, it’s a delight: reflective, wry and rueful. Musically, it retains the extravagance Welch’s fans love: big hooks embedded in a wall of sound. There’s oodles of operatic drama, but the album’s biggest pleasures often come in subtle moments. Opening track “June” begins with a sigh, before swelling in a swirl of strings to an exhortation: “Hold on to each other.” The quest for connection with others is a recurring theme. On “Hunger,” Welch alludes to an eating disorder — “At 17, I started to starve myself” — and recounts attempts to banish loneliness with drugs, art and love. The album ends on a gentle note with “No Choir,” which suggests Welch has found some peace — for better or worse. “It’s hard to write about being happy,” she sings. “Happiness is an extremely uneventful subject.” JILL LAWLESS (AP)

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Competition is likely to heat up in a way you may not have expected. A certain someone transitions from “friend” to No. 1 rival. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Things are getting more complicated for you, and today you may be tempted to give up on a situation that will soon give you the advantage. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You can do something important today that is likely to be remembered by others as they plan future dealings with you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You needn’t do things a certain way simply because that’s the way they’re done. Today you can experiment a little. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your personal development at this critical time is linked to what happens to you in that “limbo” between work and play.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may be feeling unusually creative today, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be forgiven for telling outright lies. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may find yourself involved in a meeting in which some of the big issues are tackled in no uncertain terms. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) What you expected today isn’t likely to come to pass — but you are in a position to see that it isn’t neglected or ignored in the days to come.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.
