To be fair, who could’ve foreseen that this brilliant plan would fail?
Keeping it simple here: Just a story about a really big tree. That’s it!
A suburban Detroit library has decried an unidentified censor who hid DVDs of the racy “Fifty Shades” films. The Berkley library is now displaying the R-rated movies with a sign that says hiding films “is not how libraries work.” Librarian Lauren Arnsman told the Detroit Free Press that the DVDs of the three films had mysteriously disappeared since last year, forcing the library to replace them. Most were found hidden in the building. (AP)
A man in Madison, Wis., flipped his car, fled the scene, removed some clothes and pretended to be a jogger unconnected to the wreck. The Wisconsin State Journal reported that the man changed lanes Tuesday at the same time as another car. He overcorrected, hit the shoulder and overturned his car. Police Chief Mike Koval said the man fled and took off some clothing. When officers caught up to him, he said he was an “uninvolved jogger.” (AP)
A forester in Pennsylvania says he’s discovered a massive red oak tree that may be one of the state’s biggest trees. Tom McQuaide of Pennsylvania Forest Management is submitting the tree’s measurements for inclusion in the Champion Trees of Pennsylvania, a registry of the state’s largest trees. McQuaide says the red oak is about 26 feet around and 120 feet tall. Officials say it could be 400 years old. (AP)

page three City says destruction, theft are increasing for dockless companies TRANSPORTATION Less than a year after dockless bike-share systems arrived in the District, the colorful bikes are being stolen and vandalized in growing numbers, with one city official saying that some companies have lost 50 percent of their fleets. The companies acknowledge that some users have figured out ways to cheat their systems, such as using prepaid credit cards or taking bicycles that haven’t been properly locked by paying riders, but they contend the losses are not as high as 50 percent. Some of the companies say they are taking extra measures to improve locking and GPS tracking systems. “They have lost a lot of their bikes,” Kimberly Lucas, the city’s bike program specialist, told a group of regional transportation officials at a docklessbike-share workshop in May. She said companies have told D.C. transportation officials that they have lost up to half of their fleets, which is significant because each company is allowed to operate a
maximum of 400 bikes in the city. “They are being left unlocked, and somebody wants it, they need it, they take it, they drop it off, and they are just not ending the trip because they maybe weren’t required to put in a credit card on file,” Lucas told the group. District officials declined to make Lucas available for an interview. A city spokesman said the companies have reported a combined 326 bikes missing or vandalized. Theft and vandalism of the bikes, which rent for as little as $1 a ride, have been problems in other cities in the U.S. and around the world, where dockless operations have grown exponentially in the past year. In the District, one of the first U.S. cities to experiment with the dockless model, bikes have been found dismantled, dumped in creeks and abandoned along highways. The companies participating in the District’s dockless program are LimeBike, Mobike, Spin, Ofo and Jump. The operators declined to provide specific data on their losses. They said theft and vandalism were common in the early months of operations but have dropped significantly since then. Because the

bikes are equipped with GPS, the recovery rate is high, they said. Euwyn Poon, co-founder and president of Spin, said that bikes going missing or being vandalized is not really an issue. “Initially, when the service was brand-new, there was some loss and vandalism,” Poon said. “However, that has decreased dramatically as bike-share has become more ingrained in the public infrastructure.”
Not just a D.C. problem In Europe, the dockless firm Gobee.bike was forced to abandon operations in Paris after thousands of its bikes were stolen and destroyed. In Arizona, a pile of dozens — if not hundreds — of LimeBike bikes was spotted last month at a scrapyard just northwest of Phoenix. A company spokesman said the bikes “were damaged beyond repair” and were being recycled. (TWP)

The companies have been operating in the District since a pilot program launched in September. The pilot was scheduled to end in April but was extended to the end of August. City officials are expected to come up with a plan for a permanent program during this testing period and are evaluating how the bike services are performing. Lucas said the No. 1 thing that would limit theft is requiring a credit card for rental; however, being able to rent the bikes without a credit card is also what makes the systems more accessible to a more diverse group of users. “They are making them more accessible in a lot of ways,” she said. But she noted that the theft problem presents challenges for the city as it evaluates the effectiveness of the systems. “How do we know that they only have 400 bikes operating in the jurisdiction?” she said. “Is that 400 bikes including 200 that were stolen? Or that 400 bikes that they say that are in operations and another 200 were stolen, so really there are 600 bikes floating around? These are part of the things that we are looking at.” LUZ LAZO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Man exonerated after 30 years in prison
The National Zoo reported that a final ultrasound showed that giant panda Mei Xiang was not pregnant.
It’s a ... false alarm! No panda cub, zoo says.
Mei Xiang showed signs of pregnancy, but is not actually pregnant THE DISTRICT Alas, there will be no giant panda cub this year. The National Zoo said Thursday that experts have determined that the female giant panda, Mei Xiang, is not pregnant. It’s the second year in a row that Mei Xiang has had a false pregnancy. Mei Xiang will turn 20 this month and is near the end of her reproductive life cycle, the zoo said last year, but pregnancy was still possible for her. She was artificially inseminated on March 1, and last week the panda house was closed in
anticipation and to maintain a quiet atmosphere. The panda gestation period usually lasts 90 to 185 days. Mei Xiang, as usual, had shown all the signs of a pregnancy — nesting, eating less, showing sensitivity to loud noise. But giant panda reproduction is mysterious. Females can exhibit many signs of pregnancy without being pregnant. And experts often must wait until the panda’s cycle ends — with or without a cub. Mei went on 24-hour-a-day cub watch, via the panda cams, July 1. “A final ultrasound [Thursday] confirmed that there is no developing fetus,” the zoo said in a statement.
$33,380
Mei Xiang, whose name means “beautiful fragrance,” has given birth to three surviving cubs: Tai Shan, Bao Bao and Bei Bei. Tai Shan was born July 9, 2005, and now lives in China. Bao Bao was born Aug. 23, 2013, and was moved to China last year. Bei Bei, born Aug. 22, 2015, is to move to China by the time he turns 4 years old. China, which is home to the giant panda, owns and leases all giant pandas in U.S. zoos. There are believed to be about 1,800 in the wild, and about 500 in captivity worldwide. The giant panda house, which had been closed while experts monitored Mei Xiang, reopened on Wednesday. MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

National Zoo wants secure entrances The National Zoo is planning to add gated entrances with security checkpoints, according to a proposal before the National Capital Planning Commission, Washington Business Journal reported. The three proposed entrances — which would be at Connecticut Avenue, the bus lot drop-off and the Lower Zoo — would replace the 13 open pedestrian entrances the zoo currently has. The proposed changes would increase security. The National Zoo is the only Smithsonian location without security screening, and up to 25,000 visitors pass through the zoo each day, the Journal reports. The proposal includes plans to add a fourth entrance in the future once a parking garage is constructed. (EXPRESS)

POLITICS The June 26 primary results have been long determined for most Maryland races, but it’s still undecided in several close contests in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. The Democratic nomination for the Montgomery county executive is coming down to absentee and provisional ballots, with two men — a wealthy businessman and a longtime progressive politician — locked in a close battle. After 6,329 absentee ballots were counted in Montgomery County last week, council member Marc Elrich, D-At Large, was 149 votes ahead of Potomac businessman David Blair. Election officials began counting roughly 3,600 provisional ballots, including about 2,500 Democratic ballots, Thursday morning, and the count was likely to extend into Friday. A second round of absentee ballots — those that were postmarked, but not received, by Election Day — was scheduled to
begin to be counted Friday morning. County Board of Elections spokeswoman Marjorie Roher said there are an additional 3,700 absentee ballots remaining to be counted, in addition to the ballots that will arrive in the second round. Election officials said they expect the count to continue into the weekend. In Prince George’s District 7, Rodney Streeter, chief of staff to council member Andrea Harrison, D, led Krystal Oriadha, a progressive activist, by 33 votes as of Thursday afternoon. In District 9, Clerk of the Court Sydney Harrison led local activist Tamara Davis Brown by 59 votes. There are no Republicans on the ballot for either seat, so the primary results will be decisive. Officials in Prince George’s County began counting 5,208 provisional ballots Thursday morning, but results will probably not be official until Friday at the earliest, said Prince George’s County Board of Elections Deputy Administrator Daneen Banks. She said the office had also received 180 absentee ballots as of Thursday morning. JENNIFER BARRIOS AND RACHEL CHASON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Paramedics transported the man to Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore with injuries that were believed to be non-life-threatening, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. The victim was holding a mortar tube in one hand when it exploded, causing “catastrophic injuries to both of his hands,” officials said. No criminal charges were filed. (TWP) NORFOLK, VA.

Hudson said police gave the letter to the FBI. In 2012, Ramos sued the Capital Gazette and a reporter there who now works at The Virginian-Pilot. (AP)

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Thursday that the government is racing against a federal judge’s “extreme” deadlines to reunite “under 3,000” migrant children separated from their parents at the U.S. border. He said hundreds are working on the task, including verifying relationships through DNA tests. The children are being held in shelters overseen by HHS; their parents are in jails. Spokeswoman Heather Nauert told journalists with Pompeo that U.S. policy hasn’t changed and that “we are committed to a denuclearized North Korea.” Pompeo is due in Pyongyang on Friday. He will press for North Korea to take concrete steps to back up its broad promise to “complete denuclearization” made at the June 12 summit between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. (AP)
Nineteen people were killed and at least 40 injured Thursday when a series of explosions ripped through fireworks workshops in a town just north of Mexico City. The dead included four firefighters and two police officers who rushed to the scene in Tultepec after the first explosion, only to be killed by a second wave of blasts. The head of Mexico’s civil defense agency said the explosions started at an unauthorized workshop and spread as flammable material shot into the air. Many in the town make a living by fabricating and selling homemade fireworks, but authorities have been unable to enforce safety regulations. (AP)

nation+world Fed warns of economic hit as tariffs take effect on Chinese imports ECONOMY Some U.S. companies are pulling back investments in equipment and jobs “as a result of uncertainty over trade policy,” the Federal Reserve warned Thursday, adding that U.S. clashes with trading partners were already hurting the stock market and could also harm overall economic growth. The statement by the Fed, as part of a recap of the U.S. central bank’s June meeting, was the latest indication of the high stakes of President Trump’s brewing trade war. The conflict was expected

to escalate further at midnight Friday, when U.S. tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese imports were set to take effect, with Beijing planning to swiftly respond on an equal amount of goods. The dispute reflects foreign frustration with China’s state-led industrial development strategy, which the U.S., Europe, Japan and other trading partners say hurts their companies and violates its market-opening commitments. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government has issued a list of U.S. goods for possible retaliation, but the Commerce Ministry said it would wait to see what Washington did. “China will not bow in the face of threats and blackmail, nor

“Don’t expect the ‘war’ to be out in the open in some imaginary tit-for-tat tariff battlefield,” said James Zimmerman, a partner in the Beijing office of international law firm Perkins Coie. “The real battle will be on the flanks” — in the form of unnecessary inspections, product quarantines and heightened regulatory scrutiny. Supply chains will also suffer a blow, said Cliff Tan, East Asian head of global markets research at Japan’s MUFG Bank. The U.S. also has irked some of its closest allies by hiking import duties on steel, aluminum and autos from Europe, Japan, Canada and Mexico. The U.S. labor market is hot. Unemployment is 3.8 percent, a level it’s hit only once since the 1960s, and many industries report deep labor shortages. So why do so many workers still feel left behind? We can find some clues in a new report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In particular, the report shows the United States’ unemployed and at-risk workers are getting little government support, and their employed peers are set back by a particularly weak collectivebargaining system. Those factors contribute to the U.S. having a higher level of income inequality and a larger share of low-income residents than almost any other advanced nation. It’s also strikingly easy to lose a job here. An average of 1 in 5 employees lose or leave their jobs each year, and 23.3 percent of workers had been in their job for a year or less in 2016 — a higher percentage than all but a handful of countries in the study. And research shows an unusually large amount of job turnover in the U.S. is due to firing and layoffs. It and Mexico are the only countries in the entire study that don’t require advance notice for individual firings. And when you lose your job in the U.S., it’s harder to find another: Fewer than half of displaced workers find a job within a year, the researchers found. ANDREW VAN DAM

Migrants key to World Cup Despite discrimination, Central Asians are pillar of Russia’s economy
Hybrid embryos could help save white rhinos ALEXANDER ZEMLIANICHENKO (AP)
RUSSIA Behind the veneer of Russia’s smooth-running World Cup are legions of migrant workers from Central Asia who built the stadiums and keep them running, staff concession stands and clean up after fans. They are among millions of migrants who perform menial jobs across Russia, and face routine police harassment and ethnic profiling. They are accused of depressing wages and plotting terrorism, yet no one talks of building a border wall to keep them out. That’s because they form a pillar of the economy and without them, Russia might not have managed to host a World Cup at all. As world-class soccer unfolds in their midst, orange-vested migrant workers steal glimpses of a match on a co-worker’s cellphone, or watch replays on a dormitory TV after a 12-hour shift. You won’t hear them complain. “This country took us in, and gives us work,” said Bobur Ulashov, who left Uzbekistan five years ago. Today, the 37-year-old sweeps rubbish and plucks beer cups out of bushes at Moscow’s official World Cup fan zone. He has little interaction with the visiting crowds — “they see the orange vest and keep walking,” he shrugs. He doesn’t hesitate when asked who he’s rooting for. “Russia. Who else?” Russia provides work to people

like Ulashov, who sends $100 to $200 home every month to his family. And people like Ulashov provided Russia cheap labor to prepare for the World Cup. “Migrants made up the main workforce” in the construction of stadiums and transport infrastructure for the tournament, said Valery Solovei, a professor at Moscow’s MGIMO foreign policy institute. “Without migrant workers, Russia couldn’t have built all these things so quickly.” Despite promises by soccer’s governing body FIFA, the work wasn’t always safe, or humane. Building Workers International says 21 people died on World Cup construction sites. Human Rights Watch found that many workers had no contract, and some were working in
Migrant population Russia has proportionately more migrant workers than any country in Europe: some 6 million according to official statistics, 10 million or 11 million according to unofficial estimates. temperatures of minus 13 Fahrenheit with one indoor break in a nine-hour shift. They also found nonpayment of wages, delays in paying wages and retaliation against workers who complained. FIFA said last year that it had seen a sharp fall in the “number of issues” after inspections.
Migrants staffing Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow’s primary venue, say they are happy with the conditions and $470 a month, with one or two days off per week. But most didn’t want their names published for fear of punishment. For these migrants, even harder than obtaining papers and a fair salary is fighting discrimination. Security officers single out Central Asians to check bags and documents. And when Russia sank into recession, they took blame for depressing wages, inciting terrorism and petty crime. Yet when politicians campaign to impose visas on Central Asians, officials balk, fearing that would cost Russia its influence in the strategic region. And the debate quickly dies down. SCIENCE Scientists say they’re several steps closer to perfecting a method that could prevent the extinction of northern white rhinos, of which only two animals are still alive. According to a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature Communications, researchers have succeeded in creating embryos using frozen northern white rhino sperm and eggs from a southern white rhino, a similar subspecies. Scientists say the hybrid embryos could provide a path to saving the critically endangered northern white rhino after the last male, Sudan, died in March. They plan to harvest the egg cells of the two surviving female rhinos soon and use preserved sperm to produce “pure” northern white rhino embryos. Since the females are unable to bear offspring themselves, the embryos would be implanted in a southern white rhino. Scientists are working on a second method that would coax frozen skin cells from deceased animals into becoming egg cells. Some experts have warned against focusing only on the northern white rhino subspecies, noting that its southern cousin has come back from the brink of extinction and now numbers about 21,000. Instead, they suggested, work should focus on saving other endangered rhino species that can still be found in the wild. FRANK JORDANS (AP)

Pruitt out as EPA chief
Environmental agency’s administrator resigns amid ethics, management scandals Scott Pruitt resigned Thursday, expressing no regrets and citing “unrelenting attacks.”
Britain seeks cause of nerve agent poisoning
ANDREW HARNIK (AP)
POLITICS Environmental P rotection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt resigned Thursday amid ethics investigations of his outsized security spending, firstclass flights and questionable condo lease. With Pruitt’s departure, President Trump loses an administrator many conservatives regarded as one of the more effective members of his Cabinet. But Pruitt had been dogged for months by a seemingly unending string of scandals that spawned more than a dozen federal and congressional investigations. In a resignation letter, Pruitt expressed no regret for any actions he had taken since being tapped by Trump to lead the EPA last year. “It is extremely difficult for me to cease serving you in this role first because I count it a blessing to be serving you in any capacity, but also, because of the transformative work that is occurring,” Pruitt wrote. “However, the unrelenting attacks on me personally, my family, are unprecedented and have taken a sizable toll on all of us.” Pruitt had appeared Wednesday at a White House picnic for Independence Day. Trump gave him and other officials a brief shoutout, offering no sign of any immediate change in his job. Trump said in a tweet that Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler, a former coal industry executive, will assume the acting administrator position Monday. Pruitt’s resignation came days after two of his former senior staffers spoke to House oversight committee investigators and revealed new, embarrassing details in ethics allegations against Pruitt. Samantha Dravis, Pruitt’s
for mer pol icy chief at the EPA, said Pruitt had made clear to her before and after he became EPA Wheeler ad mi nist rator that he would like the attorney general’s job. Pruitt “had hinted ... that some sort of conversation had taken place between he and the president,” Dravis said. “That was the position he was originally interested in.” A former Oklahoma attorney general close to the oil and gas industry, Pruitt had filed more than a dozen lawsuits against the agency he was picked to lead. Arriving in Washington, he worked relentlessly to dismantle Obamaera regulations that aimed to reduce toxic pollution and planetwarming carbon emissions. During his one-year tenure, Pruitt crisscrossed the country at taxpayer expense to speak with industry groups and hobnob with GOP donors, but he
Parade of problems Here is a sample of Scott Pruitt’s scandals during his time as EPA chief: The condo: He leased a Capitol Hill condo last year for just $50 a night. It was co-owned by the wife of a veteran fossil fuels lobbyist whose firm had sought regulatory rollbacks from the EPA. Security and travel: He faced backlash for pricey trips with firstclass airline seats. He also spent $43,000 on a soundproof booth for private calls, and demanded roundthe-clock protection from armed officers, resulting in a 20-member security detail that blew through overtime budgets and racked up more than $3 million in expenses. Misusing staff: He ordered his staff to do personal chores for him, including trying to obtain a Trump hotel mattress for his apartment. A job for his wife: He contacted companies and conservative groups seeking work for his wife. That included emailing a Chick-fil-A executive inquire about his wife potentially buying a franchise. showed little interest in listening to advocates he derided as “the environmental left.” Those groups applauded his departure. “Pruitt was the worst EPA chief in history,” said Kieran Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity. “His corruption was his downfall, but his pro-polluter policies will have our kids breathing dirtier air long after his many scandals are forgotten.” Pruitt voiced skepticism about mainstream climate science and was a fierce critic of the Paris climate deal. The president cheered his EPA chief’s moves to boost fossil fuel production and roll back regulations opposed by corporate interests. But Pruitt had a mixed record of producing realworld results. Many of the EPA regulations Pruitt scrapped or delayed had not yet taken effect, and the tens of thousands of lost coal mining jobs the president pledged to bring back never materialized. LONDON The British government on Thursday called on Russia to explain “exactly what has gone on” after a British couple fell into a coma following exposure to the same Soviet-era nerve agent used in March to poison former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter. The couple in the current episode was exposed to the chemical Novichok after “handling a contaminated item,” the Metropolitan Police said in an evening statement. Investigators are trying to determine whether this was residual contamination from the March attack — which British authorities linked to the Russian government. Moscow has categorically denied any involvement. “It is now time that the Russian state comes forward and explains exactly what has gone on,” Sajid Javid, Britain’s home secretary, told Parliament. Maria Zakharova, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, told reporters in Moscow that Britain should avoid “dirty political games” and should instead cooperate with Russian law enforcement. The incident threatens to further sour BritishRussian relations, which are already in a deep freeze. Officials say that the current theory is that the pair came into contact with the nerve agent at a location not covered in the Skripal decontamination sites. TALE OF TWO YEARS
Nats’ stats plummet
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
lousy rookie season. Entering Thursday, the Nationals were 8-16 in one-run games. Martinez has often left pitchers in too long and has overseen a team with sloppy baserunning that has killed rallies. The skipper has shuffled the lineup more than a Las Vegas poker dealer. Now cries to bring back Dusty Baker, who managed the Nats to 95 and 97 wins in two seasons, don’t seem overreactionary. Eleven games against three teams with losing records should show whether Washington can dig itself out of this rut. The Nationals host the Marlins for four — Thursday’s game ended after Express’ deadline — then visit Pittsburgh for three days and close the first half with four games at the Mets. If the Nats can’t manage at least 7-4 against the trio entering the All-Star break, then the already slim chances of seeing October baseball in Washington get worse. After the break, the Nats return with series against the NL East-leading Braves and the NL Central-leading Brewers. Failing to steal either of those series could leave Washington wondering if the Nats are buyers or sellers at the July 31 trade deadline. The Nationals look lost, much like they did in 2013 and 2015, when division titles were followed up with mediocre efforts that led to turnover at manager.
Blue Jackets re-sign forward Boone Jenner, 25, for 4 years, $15M
On July 4, 2017, the Nats beat the Mets 11-4 to pad a cozy division lead. Bryce Harper was hitting .324. Looking at last year’s numbers through the holiday show how the team has fallen. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS) Record 2017 (through July 4): 50-34 (.595 win pct.), nine games ahead in the NL East. 2018 (through July 4): 42-43 (.494), seven games behind the Braves.

The Nationals have reached the must-win part of their schedule. After a stretch that included 20 losses in 29 games, they can either quickly reverse an awful slump by the All-Star break or face the fact that their season is already trashed with the second half left to play. Entering Thursday’s game against Miami, the Nats were 42-43, about 10 wins fewer than expected. They’re in third place in the NL East, a division they were expected to win for the third straight time. A popular World Series pick by national pundits, Washington is simply an inconsistent, OK team. Don’t say it’s too early to judge the Nationals. The season has surpassed its midpoint. Not many teams dramatically improve after the first half. Don’t say injuries are to blame. The Nationals have been healthy enough to win more than they have, and they’ve gotten a surprise addition with 19-year-old Juan Soto emerging from the minors to be their best bat. Don’t say poor pitching is at fault, because Max Scherzer has taken four losses in his past five starts. Washington got shut out in three of those games. Maybe you can point a finger at poor managing. Dave Martinez is having a pretty

The projected full-season record for the Nationals as of Thursday morning, according to FanGraphs. The analytics website forecasted that Atlanta will win the NL East at 86-76, and that the Nats will miss the postseason. The Cubs, Dodgers, Brewers and D-backs were also projected playoff teams. When the Nats are working in Bryce Harper at first base for an emergency — or maybe to get someone batting better
than .215 into the outfield — that’s a red flag. When Harper is watching a potential homer hit the wall and manages only a double after jogging to first, as he did this week against Boston, that’s a red flag. Aside from his homers (21 entering Thursday), he’s having a rough season. He’s the engine of this team but has shown few signs of reversing his worst start. The Nats have a small window to figure out whether they’re actually contenders. It will be a grind to the finish to make the playoffs. Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Muguruza, Cilic latest marquee names to fall 2017 women’s champ and men’s runner-up ousted at Wimbledon TENNIS Garbine Muguruza insisted she wasn’t thinking about attempting to collect a second consecutive Wimbledon championship. She was adamant that she was not focusing on defending her title. “It doesn’t really matter what happened in 2017,” she said. It seems safe to say she’ll really want to forget what happened this year in London. Muguruza was stunned 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 by 47th-ranked Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium in the second round Thursday, the latest upset in a series of them at the grass-court major tournament.
“It’s a little bit sad,” Muguruza said. “But today didn’t go my way.” That’s become a familiar refrain for prominent women at this topsy-turvy Wimbledon. Only two of the top eight seeded women are still in the field after four days of action. Van Uytvanck, meanwhile, began this week with a 1-4 record at Wimbledon and only one Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance to her name. Now she’s beaten Muguruza, a two-time major champion. The No. 3-seeded Muguruza joined No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 4 Sloane Stephens, No. 5 Elina Svitolina, No. 6 Caroline Garcia and No. 8 Petra Kvitova on the way out so far, along with five-time major champion Maria Sharapova.
64
“I mean, anyone, on a good day, can beat anyone,” said Van Uytvanck, 24. It sure seems that way, particularly this week. Among the men, too. Third-seeded Marin Cilic, a finalist at the All England Club last year and a U.S. Open champ in 2014, blew a two-set lead to lose 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-5 to 82ndranked Guido Pella of Argentina. That match was completed Thursday after being suspended for rain the evening before. Pella began the week with records of 0-2 at Wimbledon and 6-15 at majors. Cilic’s exit means that the highest-seeded man who No. 1 Roger Federer possibly could face before the final would be No. 8 Kevin Anderson or No. 9 John Isner. HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)
ISNER ACES
The number of points American John Isner scored on unreturned serves Thursday in his 6-1, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-7 (3), 7-5 victory over Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans. Isner, the No. 9 seed, saved two match points and won a five-set match for just the second time in six tries at Wimbledon. The other was a three-day, 11-hour marathon eight years ago in which he scored 113 aces against Nicolas Mahut. (AP)

France gained two trophies in 1998: One, of course, was the country’s only World Cup title, won on home soil. It was also the birth year of Kylian Mbappe, the 19-year-old who is emerging as one of the biggest stars of the World Cup. France’s searing speed, led by Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, will be tested against a Uruguay defense anchored by Diego Godin in a quarterfinal in Nizhny Novgorod. The winner will face Brazil or Belgium. Uruguay has given up only one goal in four matches, and France has scored seven — the majority of them in a 4-3 victory over Argentina in the round of 16. In scoring twice against Argentina , Mbappe became the first teenager with multiple goals in a knockout game since a 17-year-old Pele did it twice (including a hat trick against France) in 1958. Edinson Cavani scored both goals in Uruguay’s knockout win over Portugal but he is questionable to play because of a hamstring injury. (AP)
Having intentionally steered England into what’s widely considered the weaker half of the bracket, coach Gareth Southgate has cast a quarterfinal against Sweden in Samara as “bloody difficult.” Southgate sent out a crew of reserves who lost 1-0 to Belgium in their group-stage finale, a result that helped the Brits avoid a meeting with Brazil. But Sweden got to this same point by playing smart and unselfish soccer. The two teams will play for a berth in a semifinal against Russia or Croatia. The English are coming off a tense but ultimately euphoric win over Colombia. After giving up an injury-time equalizer that forced a 1-1 draw, England triumphed 4-3 in a shootout. English striker Harry Kane is in the lead for the Golden Boot with six goals. Sweden, a 1-0 winner over Switzerland, gets midfielder Sebastian Larsson back from a ban but won’t have defender Mikael Lustig because of a yellow card accumulation. (AP)

Russia vs. Croatia
2 p.m. Friday, FS1
To get past Belgium, Brazil has to do something it has not been able to do since it last won the tournament: overcome European opposition in the knockout stages. Since beating Germany in the 2002 final, the five-time champion has been eliminated by a European side (France, Netherlands, Germany) in each World Cup. Belgium, however, has never scored a goal — let alone won a match — against a South American squad in the knockout stage at the World Cup. A Belgium team bursting with talent, from Thibaut Courtois in goal to Kevin De Bruyne in midfield and Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku up front, showed it has character after rallying from a 2-0 deficit to beat Japan with a thrilling counterattack in the last minute of injury time. Although Belgium has a tournament-high 12 goals, it will still be the underdog in Kazan against Brazil and star striker Neymar, who is one yellow card away from a suspension. (AP)
Akira Nishino will not stay on as coach of Japan after losing in knockout stage
Danijel Subasic 2 p.m. Saturday, Fox
It doesn’t matter that few Russian fans expected the hosts to get this far; midfielder Alexander Golovin is already thinking about the final. The creative breakout star for Russia never doubted the team would perform well — long before it beat Spain on penalties in the round of 16, setting up a match with Croatia in Sochi. “We knew that everything was possible,” he said Wednesday. “Even before the beginning of the tournament we all understood that we could reach the final.” Croatia also reached the quarterfinals on penalties after overcoming a spirited Denmark team, and is now aiming to match its best-ever World Cup: it made the semifinals in 1998. Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic was Croatia’s star of its past match with three saves in the shootout. He has predicted that Russia will repeat its defensive style from the Spain game, when Spain had possession of the ball 75 percent of the game but couldn’t break through. (AP)

How to Use Color Psychology in Your home olor psychology is EDsHG oQ WhH GiÎ?HrHQW emotional and mental effects that different colors have on us. While different colors can have different meanings depending on your culture and experiences, generally speaking, the main colors have similar eÎ?ects for residents of the US. Below we’ll discuss the diÎ?erent meanings that certain colors have, then we’ll recommend some ways to incorporate the colors into your apartment to improve your everyday life.
C
White White usually signiȴes purity and cleanliness. It’s a neutral color that can improve our sense of space, and even make small spaces feel bigger. The blankness of white is common in minimalistic design. Consider using white in your workspace to minimize distractions. You can also use it for anything you want to blend into your environment. For example, if a lot of your walls and Ⱦooring are neutral colors, white items will feel like a part of the structure, whereas anything with color will pop.
Black Black signifies authority, strength, and intelligence. It is also thinning and slimming. Black is used a lot in modern
design because the dark boldness helps show the clean lines in furniture. If your space has a lighter color palette, you can use black for objects you want to stand out. Consider using black for wooden furniture that you want to look strong and boldČƒcoÎ?ee tables, book shelves, and TV stands are common items that work with black.
Brown Brown evokes feelings of comfort, warmth, and stability. The natural and neutral tone is popular in hygge-inspired design. Brown is an excellent color for flooring, and is becoming increasingly popular in furniture. The natural look of raw (brown) wood is featured in hygge design as well as urban/industrial design. Consider using brown in your living room to help your guests feel comfortable and warm. You can also use brown in your dining room—a brown table with tea lights will make guests feel warm and cozy while enjoying whatever meal you’ve chosen to whip up!
Red Red can represent love and romance, but it can also help use feel energetic and excited. Use red as a way to add pops of color rather than buckets. Specifically, consider getting
a red, statement piece for the area where you spend a large part of your day to help you feel more energetic and excited. If you work from home, consider a red painting to keep you feeling excited during your work hours. Some people purchase their small appliances in red colors to help them feel more energized as they start their day. Could coÎ?ee made with a red .eurig be the key to waking up in the morning? It probably couldn’t hurt!
Pink Ahh, pink, the colorful trend that took over 2017. Pink is a gentle color that helps us feel calmness or love. It went amazingly well with the concept of hygge because of its softness. A light pink rug paired with white sheets and neutral brown flooring and furniture will leave you feeling comforted, warm, calm, and clean. This palette is ideal for a meditation room or your bedroom.
Orange Just like the color orange is a mixture of red and yellow, the associations with the color are somewhere in between what you would get with red or yellow. Use orange to feel happy, energetic, excited, warm, or stimulated. The
kitchen and dining area are two common places for orange. You can also use orange in your office or workspace to help you feel more stimulated while you work. Consider an orange chair or an orange rug to add a pop of excitement in your day.
Yellow Yellow is associated with happiness, laughter, cheer, warmth, and optimism, which is why it’s common in areas where people gather. Depending on what type of host you are, you can consider using yellow in the kitchen and dining area or your family room. Yellow walls are not uncommon in kitchens, and yellow coÎ?ee tables are a great way to add some cheer to the place where you spend a large chunk of time.
Green Green is a natural color and is commonly associated with health, growth, and harmony. Green is not a common color in design, which means it will not go unnoticed. Consider using green in a way that feels natural. Maybe add plants to your living room to literally add some nature to the room or you go with a green rug that will pair with natural associations of grass under our feet outside.
Blue Blue is a common color in design and is associated with calmness, serenity, loyalty, and truth. Light blue is perfect for creating a calm environment in your bedroom or meditation room. A deeper blue can be used on your walls to help you feel serenity and peace in any room.
Purple Purple has an exotic, royal, spiritual, or mysterious feel to it, and it’s also Pantone’s 2018 color of the year. Use pops of purple throughout your apartment to spark creativity and spirituality. You can read about all of the ways to incorporate purple into your apartment in our recent blog. While these are all common associations we have with diÎ?erent colors, every person has developed some of their own associations over their lives. There are no rules when it comes to color, so if pink is the color that makes you happy, then add pops of pink wherever you want. If purple is your calming color, then create a purple meditation space. Color psychology is only for helping you understand some of the natural associations we have with the colors around us. Marvel’s “Ant-Man and The Wasp” arrives in theaters this weekend with a lot of buzz.
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
The war can wait: Here’s the little breather we need It’s been a tough year in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The hero won in “Black Panther,” but that’s only if you believe that T’Challa was the hero and Killmonger was the villain. Then came “Avengers: Infinity War,” and that ending was, you know, not exactly a happy one. So the barrage of bad news that is 2018 has followed us into the MCU. Here comes “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” the title of which lists the superheroes in alphabetical order, we have to presume, since she does more than he does to save the day. It’s a comfortable, comforting movie, and that starts with the plot. Our incredible shrinking/expanding hero, Scott Lang
(Paul Rudd), is under house arrest for appearing as an alternately teeny and huge member of Team Cap in “Captain America: Civil War.” The other half of the titular duo, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), has gone underground with her dad, an inventor and the original Ant-Man, to continue their itsy-bitsy research. Days before Lang’s punishment is over, a new villain who can go through walls, people and dimensions shows up. It does not speak well of the script that it took me more than a few seconds just now to remember the name of said villain (it’s Ghost, played by Hannah JohnKamen). Still, stay with me as I argue that this is the movie we need right now. “Ant-Man and The Wasp” has many of the things — if not
Iggy Azalea drops singles “Kream,” “Tokyo Snow Trip”
all of the things — that made 2015’s “Ant-Man” so enjoyable. There’s a lighthearted sensibility about it, particularly when it comes to Paul Rudd’s likability. The visuals are still there, too. Car chases are so fun when one or more of the vehicles involved can shrink and embiggen; returning director Peyton Reed knows this and plays it not only for humor, but for genuine excitement. It’s a formulaic superhero movie, although done very well. The best thing that the Marvel-Disney behemoth has done is to allow the writers and directors of the more recent MCU films — let’s say from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on — to write and direct in styles that they are good at, that they are comfortable with and that fit

the sensibilities of their star characters. We probably have more tough times ahead — next spring brings the fourth Avengers movie. While no one knows exactly what will happen — even the cast members were given fake script pages and shot scenes that will never make it into the film to keep them from being able to spoil anything — it’s safe to assume that our heroes will pay a high price for any win they get. Right now, we just need a break. That’s why boxing matches pause between rounds and aren’t just continuous pounding. So “Ant-Man and The Wasp” isn’t as serious and isn’t as good as “Black Panther.” That’s OK. It’s draining to repeatedly pick yourself up off the mat in the face of an evil that just won’t back down, and “Ant-Man and The Wasp” is a space where moviegoers can rest. Sitting back, getting some water, taking a few deep breaths doesn’t mean the fight is over — it’s the only way to keep it going. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby
As the telemarketer Cassius (Lakeith Stanfield) moves between the evermultiplying worlds that make up his personal universe, writer-director Boots Riley’s control over his own material begins to falter. This is a movie of myriad worthy, even urgently necessary, ideas; when it reaches its climax, it goes completely haywire in a preposterous, increasingly scattershot sci-fi pastiche. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Whitney’ R, 120 min.
Is there anyone who isn’t familiar with the tragic trajectory of Whitney Houston? That grievous arc is drawn with intelligence and sensitivity in “Whitney,” Kevin Macdonald’s documentary that portrays Houston as an artist, a cultural phenomenon and, in the end, a victim of unscrupulous and abusive family members as well as a trainwreck-addicted tabloid culture. Considering this is a “Purge” movie, it’s safe to say these folks are looking upon something horrifying.
Lurking beneath the surface ‘The First Purge’ uses dark themes to explore real-world anxieties FILM REVIEW Since the original 2013 “Purge” film, the franchise has struggled to develop its undeniably intriguing premise: What would happen if all crime, including murder, were legal every year for 12 hours? By taking the franchise to its infancy with “The First Purge,” the film can better explore the implications of its premise. The result is an unabashedly violent B-movie throwback, the sort director John Carpenter used to make, with moments that resonate with real life. Unlike the other “Purge” films, in which crime is legal across the country, “The First
Purge” localizes the anarchy to Staten Island. The hard-right New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) hope this trial is a success, resulting in a reduction in crime and government assistance programs. The experiment’s architect is Dr. Updale (Marisa Tomei), an academic who thinks widespread catharsis could have positive psychological outcomes. Both the NFFA and Updale seem naive, and yet the Purge persists on an unassailable idea: No one knows what they’re capable of when they’re desperate. Director Gerard McMurray and screenwriter James DeMonaco — who wrote all three of the previous “Purge” films — introduce us to Dmitri (Y’lan Noel), a drug dealer with a conscience, and his ex, Nya (Lex
‘The First Purge’ (R, 97 min.) DIRECTOR: Gerard McMurray STARS: Y’lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Marisa Tomei IN A NUTSHELL: A right-wing party runs an experiment in which crime is made legal for a night in Staten Island in an attempt to vent aggression.
Scott Davis), an anti-Purge demonstrator, who live in a tightknit community on Staten Island. Nya plans to hunker down during the Purge, but her younger brother Isaiah (Joivan Wade) wants to take advantage of the incentives offered by NFFA to anyone who willingly “purges,” including $5,000 for wearing contact lenses that double as cameras, and even more cash
for committing violent crimes. Even non-news junkies will recognize some of the influences on “The First Purge.” All over the island, white men wear khakis and carry tiki torches. Others don Ku Klux Klan hoods or exaggerated costumes that resemble SS uniforms. When Nya fends off an attacker who had groped her, she repurposes a line from President Trump’s “Access Hollywood” tape. This may be the fourth “Purge” film, but it’s the first that genuinely addresses some of the anxieties and frustrations unfolding in today’s America, albeit in its own dystopian, hyperbolized fashion. By the time the end credits roll for this vicious, nasty crowdpleaser, you may just feel purged of your anger. AL AN ZILBERMAN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Idris Elba to take on ‘Hobbs and Shaw’
Idris Elba is in final talks to play the villain in ”Hobbs and Shaw,” a “Fast & Furious” spinoff film starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, Variety reported Thursday. “Deadpool 2” filmmaker David Leitch will direct a script written by Chris Morgan, with the film pegged for a July 26, 2019, release. Linking to the news of Elba’s casting, Johnson tweeted Thursday: “He’s a bad man (legit bad ass). I better toughen up.” (EXPRESS) Claude Lanzmann, director of Holocaust documentary “Shoah,” died Thursday at 92

‘Leave No Trace’ tells a powerful familial fable FILM REVIEW In the opening moments of “Leave No Trace,” we watch as a man and his 13-year-old daughter wordlessly go about their lives as squatters in the middle of Forest Park, a 5,200-acre tract of public woods in Oregon. But those Arcadian images quickly dissipate, like morning fog burning off under the glare of a pitiless sun, in this intense and bittersweet tale of what it means to be broken and whole. Written and directed by Debra Granik (“Winter’s Bone”), the film is based on Peter Rock’s 2009 novel “My Abandonment,” which was itself inspired by a true story. In short order, Will (Ben Foster) and his daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), are picked up by the authorities. A widowed veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Will can no longer abide human society, it seems, rejecting the transitional housing in which he and Tom are placed by social services. Whatever its underlying message may be, the film works only to the degree that its central relationship does. Where Will is tormented, Tom is strong and brave. “Leave No Trace” is not a sociological treatise. It has nothing grandiose to say about homelessness or PTSD. It does, however, deliver an effective allegory of the inevitable leavetaking that all of us — housed or unhoused, happy or half-mad — must undergo with our loved ones. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
