CULTURE The game cannot be contained. It devours downtime. It turns friends against each other. It makes the mild-mannered into mercenaries. It’s Machiavelli meets your freshman dorm. It’s “Survivor Maryland,” the wildest, realest reality show you’ve never heard of: a lowbudget, junior-varsity take on the popular CBS competition show “Survivor.” Instead of being marooned on an island, the players undergo challenges and tribal turmoil during a semester at the University of Maryland. The craze began with Austin Trupp, 25, a “Survivor” superfan, who enrolled at the College Park campus in 2011. He was struck by the parallels between college life and the game he loved. Trupp recruited a cast of 21 friends and filmed through the fall of 2012. In the network version, competitors are removed from their normal lives and play the game against strangers in a remote location for 39 days. The winner walks away with $1 million — but

then gets to return to real life. “Survivor Maryland” unfolds over several months, against a backdrop familiar to anyone who has set foot on a college campus. Competitors mud-wrestle for “immunity” prizes on grassy quads and do confessional interviews in dorm rooms and lounges — all while remaining bogged down in the usual obligations: school, work, extracurriculars. The prize is a paltry $100. And perhaps most interestingly, they often compete against people they know and care about. Whatever drama plays out will

follow them to their next semester. And boy, is there drama. “There were nights where they were up at 5 a.m. yelling at each other outside a dorm in front of tiki torches because they’re angry about things that happened in contrived scenarios,” Trupp said. “I remember always thinking on campus that nobody could understand what we’re doing here and how crazy it is.” Six years and five seasons later, “Survivor Maryland” is notorious. Some of its episodes on YouTube have more than 15,000 views. It’s even inspired a wave of imitators

at schools across the country. But this fifth season will be Trupp’s last. He graduated three years ago, and he’s still working on turning the footage from his senior year into a story-rich show. Thankfully for fans, Trupp has passed the tiki torch to others who will continue the show. “Austin’s like the Michael Jordan of college ‘Survivor,’ ” said Greg Friedberg, who hosts a version at Ohio State. “What Austin does set the bar really high. ... Students seek day off for Lunar New Year

ARLINGTON

Asian families say they must choose between school and their culture

MATT McCLAIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY For Angelina Xu, one of the best holidays of the year is like Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled into one. It brings the chance to see far-flung relatives and friends, to revel in plates and plates of Chinese food. But schools don’t close for Lunar New Year in her Maryland school system, so the 12-year-old said she and others are forced to choose between their classes and their culture — an “impossible decision.” “It’s important to me to be off because it’s the best chance I get to relate to my family in China, and to connect more with my parents and my brother, and to learn more about my culture,” said Xu, who attends Roberto Clemente Middle School in Germantown. The rising seventh-grader is part of a growing call for recognition of Lunar New Year in Montgomery County, a sprawling school district that ranks as the largest in the state — and one of the largest in the nation — with more than 161,000 students. Some see the effort as a sign of growing activism among AsianAmerican families at a time when their children account for more than 14 percent of districtwide enrollment.

THE DISTRICT

A group performs a dragon dance during a celebration for Chinese New Year in D.C. Students in Montgomery County want the day off to celebrate.

Lunar New Year became a focal point in the spring as the school system urged students, parents and staff to weigh in on holidays and other occasions. The district created a survey that asked about school attendance and the importance of being off on a range of dates: Columbus Day, Passover, the Hindu holiday of Diwali, Orthodox Easter, spring break. Strikingly, an estimated 40,000 responses poured in. Results will be released at a July 19 school board committee meeting. “Practicing tradition helps us remember our roots,” said Benjamin Lee, a rising ninth-grader, at a school board meeting. State law requires schools be closed for some holidays and occasions, including Christmas and Good Friday, while others,

including Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, are a matter of local decision-making. In Montgomery County, students have been out of school on Jewish holidays since the 1970s, when officials say they found high levels of student and staff absences affected operations. Supporters point out that Asian students account for more than 30 percent of the student body at some schools. Many also point out that Montgomery gives students the day off on certain Christian, Jewish and Muslim holidays. “If you’re going to respect one culture, you must respect all,” said Evelyn Shue, a rising eighthgrader at Eastern Middle School, noting the school system prides itself on diversity. Another part of Beach Drive reopens today A portion of Beach Drive will reopen after the evening rush today, free of potholes and cracks — so smooth that some drivers may forget the pain of its having been closed for nearly a year. The bad news is that the closures on this critical commuter route are not over. As work ends on the 1.5-mile stretch of roadway between Broad Branch Road/Blagden Avenue NW and Joyce Road NW, an additional 2.7 miles will be shut to traffic. Drivers who take Beach Drive from the Maryland line to Joyce Road will need to find a new route starting Tuesday. Beach Drive, a 6½-mile thoroughfare that runs through Rock Creek Park, is undergoing a threeyear rehabilitation. This latest closure, expected to last at least a year, marks the last phase of a four-part makeover. (TWP)

local Federal prosecutors abruptly drop all 39 remaining rioting cases THE DISTRICT Federal prosecutors on Friday dismissed rioting charges against all remaining defendants arrested after destructive Inauguration Day protests in the nation’s capital, bringing to a close a controversial case that led to allegations of government overreach. Prosecutors began filing paperwork Friday afternoon to formally drop the cases against 39 people

who had been awaiting trial. The vandalism of downtown businesses on the day President Trump was sworn in stretched more than 16 blocks as part of a disturbance called DisruptJ20. Members of a large group of protesters set small fires and used bricks and crowbars to smash storefronts. Prosecutors had said six police officers were injured. In all, 234 people were arrested and charged with rioting. Of them, 21 defendants pleaded guilty before trial. But prosecutors had been unable to secure convictions at trial against others

They argued that their clients were not rioting, but were swept up in the arrests while peacefully protesting. After the first six defendants to go to trial were acquitted late last year, prosecutors dropped charges against more than 150 others, saying they were unable to prove those people planned or participated in protests with the aim of causing damage. NBA prospect, ex-Terp charged with rape in Md.

Negligent driving case that killed 2 ends with $280 fine

Elections officials say former state delegate Johnny Olszewski Jr. has won the Democratic nomination for Baltimore County executive by just nine votes. The narrow margin allows the second-place finisher, state Sen. Jim Brochin, to request a recount. The nine-vote margin is out of more than 84,000 ballots cast. Olszewski’s victory was announced Friday night after a count of absentee and provisional ballots. He led by nearly 350 votes after election day but saw his lead steadily erode as absentee ballots were counted. The winner faces Republican insurance commissioner Al Redmer Jr. in November. (AP)

An NBA prospect and former Maryland basketball player has been charged with rape and assault related to having sex with an intoxicated woman last year, prosecutors said Friday. Damonte Dodd, 24, was indicted on second-degree rape, second-degree assault and related charges, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks announced. The woman met Dodd while celebrating Halloween with friends in College Park. After the woman reported the attack to police, prosecutors say Dodd said the sex was consensual. A hearing is set for Thursday. Dodd played for Maryland from 2013 to 2017. (AP)

A Maryland man who fatally struck an FBI agent and a fire marshal on the side of a highway has been convicted of negligent driving and paid a $280 fine. Roberto Garza Palacios, 28, served no jail time for his role in the December crash that killed Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Sander Cohen and FBI Special Agent Carlos Wolff. Wolff and Cohen were standing on the side of the road on I-270 in Montgomery County when they were struck by a Honda Accord driven by Garza Palacios. Wolff had crashed, and Cohen had stopped to help. Garza, a native of Guatemala, still faces possible deportation.

An ambulance leaves the Tham Luang cave area Sunday after divers rescued four boys.

were taking part in the key leg of the rescue: taking the boys from where they have been sheltering and through dark, tight and twisting passageways filled with muddy water and strong currents. Cave rescue experts consider an underwater escape to be a last resort, especially with people untrained in diving. The death Friday of a former Thai navy SEAL, Saman Gunan, underscored the risks. The diver, the first fatality of the rescue effort, was working in a volunteer capacity and died on a mission to place oxygen canisters along the route. But Narongsak said earlier that mild weather and falling water levels in recent days had created optimal conditions for an

The soccer coach Ekapol Chanthawong, a 25-year-old former novice monk, is the assistant coach of the Thai boys’ soccer team and the only adult stranded in the cave. According to rescue officials, Ekapol is among the weakest in the group, in part because he gave the boys his share of the limited food and water they had with them in the earlier days. He also taught the boys how to meditate and conserve their energy. In a letter to the families, Ekapol wrote: “I promise I will care for the kids as best as possible. ... underwater evacuation. Those conditions won’t last if the rain resumes, he said. Authorities have said the monsoons could cause water to rise in the cave. That, along with dwindling oxygen levels, added to the urgency of getting the team out. Earlier efforts to pump water out of the cave have been thwarted by heavy downpours. The boys, who have been stranded since June 23, sounded calm and reassuring in handwritten notes to their families that were made public Saturday. One note read: “I’m doing fine, but the air is a little cold, but don’t worry. Although, don’t forget to set up my birthday party.” TASSANEE VEJPONGSA AND KAWEEWIT KAEWJINDA (AP)

MAE SAI, THAILAND Expert divers on Sunday rescued four of 12 boys from a flooded cave in northern Thailand where they were trapped with their soccer coach for more than two weeks, as a dangerous and complicated plan unfolded amid heavy rain and the threat of rising water underground. Eight of the boys and their coach remained inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex as authorities paused the international effort until today to replenish air tanks along the treacherous exit route. The success of the initial evacuation raised hopes that all will be out soon, although officials said the rescue could take up to four days to complete. “The operation went much better than expected,” said Chiang Rai acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is overseeing the mission. He told reporters that four boys were brought out and taken to the hospital in the town of Chiang Rai, the provincial capital, for evaluation, and that the next phase of the operation would resume after about 10 to 20 hours. His announcement, at a news conference more than an hour after helicopters and ambulances were seen rushing from the cave area, drew cheers and applause. Trump savors the reveal A president fixated on TV ratings will make his Supreme Court pick tonight in prime time

Trump halting risk payments to ACA insurers

hoping for a huge prime-time audience, and he’ll probably get it.” More than 33 million viewers watched Trump announce Gorsuch last year. The audience surpassed the 31.3 million who watched Obama’s final State of the Union address but was dwarfed by the 56.5 million who saw Obama announce the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011, among the decade’s mostwatched presidential speeches. In an administration light on policy achievements, the president often views media attention as a victory unto itself. Douglas Brinkley, a history professor at Rice University, said the nomination has the added benefit of dominating the news, potentially overshadowing coverage of migrant children separated from their parents at the border. Said Brinkley: “It’s been a tough summer until this gift that Kennedy gave him.” CATHERINE LUCEY

HEALTH The Trump administration took another major swipe at the Affordable Care Act, halting billions of dollars in annual payments required under the law to even out the cost to insurers whose customers need expensive medical services. In a rare Saturday afternoon announcement, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said it will stop collecting and paying out money under the ACA’s “risk adjustment” program, drawing swift protest from the health insurance industry. Risk adjustment is a permanent method built into the 2010 health care law to help insulate insurance companies from the ACA requirement that they accept all customers for the first time — healthy and sick — without charging more to those who need substantial care. Federal health officials are required each year to calculate which insurers with relatively low-cost consumers must chip in to a fund, and which ones with more expensive customers are owed money. In its announcement, CMS said that it is not going to make $10.4 billion in payments that are due to insurers in the fall for expenses incurred last year. The suspension of these payments is the most recent maneuver by President Trump to undercut the ACA, which a Republican-led Congress failed to repeal last year. AMY GOLDSTEIN

POLITICS A family separation crisis of his own making continues at the border. His Environmental Protection Agency chief just quit amid mounting scandals. And he’s about to meet with an adversary accused of meddling in the 2016 election. But President Trump has every confidence that tonight the nation’s attention will be right where he wants it. After more than a week of pitched speculation, Trump will go on prime-time television to reveal his choice to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. Nearly 18 months after Trump set in motion Justice Neil Gorsuch’s nomination, the reality star-turned-president is more seasoned, more embittered and increasingly comfortable exerting his will over the machinery of government and his own staff. His upcoming “Supreme” show is the latest example of Trump’s push to remake the federal bench with young conservative judges, a crusade he believes will energize GOP voters concerned about the state of the judiciary. Trump is largely following the same playbook this time as when he successfully rolled out Gorsuch’s nomination in January 2017. White House aides have strict instructions to keep information under wraps so Trump himself can make the big reveal. The president was gleeful when Gorsuch’s name didn’t leak out early. “So was that a surprise?” Trump said, after announcing his decision. Still, there are differences

this time. In the last go-around, the White House relied heavily on outside consultants to push Gorsuch over the finish line. Despite a staff exodus that has left key vacancies, the White House this time is retaining more control over the nomination and confirmation processes. A war room of communications, legal and research staff has been assembled in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building to promote and defend the nominee. Trump has reveled in building up suspense in the days leading up to his speech, offering fragments of information here and there but strategically keeping the guessing game alive. Speaking to reporters Thursday, Trump was coy. “I don’t want to say the four,” he said. “But I have it down to four.” Past announcements of Supreme Court nominees were not made in prime time. President Barack Obama announced the

Circuit; Michigan’s Raymond Kethledge, from the 6th Circuit; and Indiana’s Amy Coney Barrett, from the 7th Circuit. Dozens dead, missing as rains pound Japan Landslides and flooding have forced millions from their homes HIROSHIMA, JAPAN At least 85 people have died and 58 are unaccounted for as torrential rains continued to batter parts of western Japan on Sunday, causing landslides and flooding and forcing millions of people from their homes, local media reported. Television footage showed bridges and cars washed away by raging rivers and floodwaters, with people perched on the roofs of their homes, surrounded by water and awaiting rescue. Japan’s Meteorological Agency

had issued rare “emergency warnings” against landslides, rising rivers, strong winds and lightning strikes caused by what it called “historic” rains in 23 prefectures across the western and central parts of the country. The rains began Thursday and continued into Sunday in many areas. Such warnings are issued in anticipation of the sort of extreme conditions that occur just once or twice in 50 years, Kyodo News reported. “There are still many people missing and others in need of help. We are working against time,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Sunday morning. More than 1.6 million people were ordered to evacuate their

homes, while 3.1 million were put on high alert and urged to do so. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said 54,000 police officers, firefighters and members of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and coast guard had been mobilized in the rescue effort, Kyodo reported, with TV footage showing them using boats and helicopters to bring people to safety. Public broadcaster NHK said flooding and landslides were hindering rescue efforts. The western Hiroshima prefecture was hit the hardest by landslides, which claimed 37 lives, NHK reported. Among the dead there was a 3-year-old girl whose home was hit by a landslide.

Colonizers wiped out ancient dogs The dogs that thrived for thousands of years alongside Native Americans were wiped out when European colonists — and their canines — arrived in North America in the 15th century, likely due to disease, according to a study published Thursday in Science. Researchers analyzed DNA from 71 “pre-contact” dogs and 145 modern dogs and found that just five of the modern samples had any hint of ancient dog. They also found that pre-contact dogs likely came from eastern Siberia and did not descend from American wolves. Similar modern dogs include Alaskan malamutes (below). (TWP)

Woman dies of exposure to nerve agent Novichok A woman who was poisoned by military-grade nerve agent Novichok in southwest England died Sunday, eight days after police think she touched a contaminated item. London’s Metropolitan Police force said detectives had begun a homicide investigation into 44-year-old Dawn Sturgess’ death at a hospital in Salisbury. She and her boyfriend, Charlie Rowley, 45, were admitted June 30 after falling ill; Rowley remains in critical condition. Novichok is the same nerve agent used to poison a former Russian spy and his daughter in March. Britain blames Russia for the attack — an allegation Moscow denies. (AP)

After 20-year conflict, foes to normalize ties in historic breakthrough

ASMARA, ERITREA Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed traveled Sunday to Eritrea, once a bitter adversary, and agreed to normalize ties after an unprecedented summit. The two nations, sworn enemies for two decades, fought a brutal war from 1998 to 2000

in which at least 70,000 people were killed. In the intervening years, the two sides have clashed repeatedly and supported rival rebel movements. Abiy was hugged by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki at the airport in Asmara, the Eritrean capital. After being cheered by crowds and holding meetings, the two leaders attended a dinner and announced new measures. The two countries will reopen embassies, restore flight links

visit each other’s cities and allow our airlines and ports to operate freely, Abiy said. “Love is greater than modern weapons like tanks and missiles. Love can win hearts, and we have seen a great deal of

it today here in Asmara. Hallelujah Lulie, a political analyst specializing in the Horn of Africa, said the two countries had come to the realization that the status quo — no war, no peace — could not continue. “It will radically redraw the geopolitical map of the Horn of Africa and East Africa, he said. “The rivalry between Ethiopia and Eritrea was reflected in conflicts in South Sudan, Somalia, even sometimes up to Chad. Abiy broke the deadlock between the two countries June 5 by accepting the 2000 peace agreement that ended the war, which would involve ceding territory still held by Ethiopia. Summer stardom

ANALYSIS

Howard’s end game

With the Las Vegas NBA Summer League starting last week, here’s a look at a few names who have impressed so far in the short showcase for developing talent. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Center’s only hope to cash in next summer is to play a drama-free season for Wizards changing addresses because of the notable trail of broken locker rooms he has left in his wake. There was his messy exit from Orlando six years ago, which included the legendary scene of then-Magic coach Stan Van Gundy speaking openly about Howard wanting him gone — only for Howard to unwittingly wander by a few moments later and pretend everything was fine. That was followed by a year with the Lakers when Howard and Kobe Bryant constantly feuded. Then came a three-year stint with Houston that saw his relationship with James Harden disintegrate. In 2016, Howard returned home to Atlanta, where he lasted all of one season before being sent packing in one of general manager Travis Schlenk’s first moves. Mitch Kupchak did the same to Howard in one of his first acts as GM of the Hornets. Ask people both near and far from Howard’s orbit, and they will say the same thing: If he will stop insisting on getting post touches and focus on his still-elite skills — setting screens, rolling to the rim offensively, grabbing rebounds and protecting the rim — then this could work out splendidly for Howard and the Wizards. If not? Well, this could go like his last few stops have. Howard is easily the best center the Wizards could have gotten

2 Dwight Howard played 81 games last season, his most since 2009-10 with Orlando.

“I can’t force him. He has to want to be able to change on his own.” WIZARDS GUARD JOHN WALL,

responding to a question from The Washington Post about whether Dwight Howard can reverse his reputation for being a divisive presence in the locker room

after trading Marcin Gortat. The idea of Ian Mahinmi starting next season was unacceptable for a team hoping to return to the latter stages of the playoffs. Howard, if he has the right approach, could help Washington get there. The Wizards knew

that. Both John Wall and Bradley Beal recruited Howard personally, and the team was united in wanting him to be part of it. But will that remain the case by, say, January? The Wizards moved on from Gortat, who didn’t mind voicing his displeasure, after his feuds with Wall escalated. “Let’s see how that plays out,” one league executive said Friday, offering skepticism that the WallHoward pairing would end well. Another predicted that Howard would be more of a problem than Gortat ever was. Howard needs a strong season — sans drama — to have any hope of a big payday next summer. Now the Wizards have him. We’ll see how long the honeymoon lasts.

JONATHAN DANIEL (GETTY IMAGES)

NBA The idea of Dwight Howard — eight-time All-Star, three-time defensive player of the year and still quality starting center — joining the Wizards was met with a mix of shrugs, derision and caution from league executives last weekend at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. That the move hasn’t been universally applauded as a good piece of business is a telling sign of the potential Faustian bargain Washington might be entering after Howard officially clears waivers today at 5 p.m. The price to sign Howard — the full taxpayer’s mid-level exception for 2018-19 season ($5.3 million), plus a player option for the next — was more than he was expected to receive but far from exorbitant. Measuring solely by production, there is little doubt Howard is worth the money. He played 81 games for Charlotte last season — the most he has played since the 2009-10 season in Orlando — and averaged 16.6 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 30 minutes per game. But production and money aren’t the reasons Howard will be on his fourth team in four seasons (and his fifth if you count the two hours he was with the Brooklyn Nets on Friday afternoon). Howard, 32, is once again

Pickford picks up sterling reputation Rising star restores pride in English goalies on run to the semifinals WORLD CUP Jordan Pickford said it was a “daft injury,” about the only thing he got wrong all game. “I went to punch the (ground) and ended up punching my knee and hurt my thumb,” the England goalkeeper recalled. “It was a

bit of anger. But I’m a man, not a mouse. I’m fine and I’ll live another day, won’t I?” After a 2-0 win over Sweden in a Saturday quarterfinal, Pickford left Samara Stadium with a bandaged left hand, a glass vase to commemorate a player-of-thematch performance and a new status as the pride of a nation. The reputation of English goalies has taken a beating in recent years. Robert Green allowed a

of 16 at Euro 2016. England’s other goalkeeper in 2010, David James, was sometimes cruelly labeled “Calamity James.” But Pickford, 24, is reshaping opinions with his play in Russia.

ENGLAND VS. CROATIA | 2 P.M. WEDNESDAY, FOX

Four days after being England’s penalty-shootout star against Colombia in the round of 16, Pickford, who joined Everton from Sunderland last year, produced three brilliant, one-handed saves against Sweden to ensure a place for England in a semifinal against Croatia. The only previous England goalies to appear on such a stage were Gordon Banks — the World Cup winner from 1966 — and Peter Shilton, a veteran of 125 international caps who was 40 when he played in a 1990 semifinal loss to West Germany. They are England’s greatest goalies. The way Pickford’s career is going, he could be joining that elite group. STEVE DOUGLAS (AP)

Roark continues slide as Marlins batter Nats MARLINS 10, NATIONALS 2 Although the Nationals had seemed reinvigorated after a players-only meeting led to a three-game win streak, they are not infallible. The problem that sent them spiraling in the first place cannot be rectified by even the most rousing of meetings. Since an injury to Stephen Strasburg shook the foundation of the rotation, it has continued to tremble, and Tanner Roark simply cannot find his balance. The right-hander struggled again in a 10-2 loss to the visiting Marlins on Sunday, needing 102 pitches to crawl through four innings in which he allowed four runs and 15 base runners. Washington allowed a total of 22 hits. Roark has been so desperate he has begun altering non-baseball habits. For years, he pitched to Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold,” while he warmed up, but the song betrayed him, like the mutton chops he sported in June. He ditched them both, shaving all his hair after allowing nine runs in his previous outing. Roark entered Sunday with an 8.44 ERA in his past four starts, allowing an average of eight hits per start. He allowed three base

runners in the first inning, then three runs on four hits in the second. By the third, he began to show frustration. After a leadoff single, Trea Turner could not get a would-be double play ball out of his glove. Roark stomped back to the mound, appearing indignant. When Roark was at his best, in 2016, he induced soft contact better than all but one starter in the NL. That season, 23.3 percent of the contact made against him met FanGraphs’ requirements for “soft.” Entering Sunday, he had allowed 18.8 percent soft contact and more than 30 percent hard contact — by far a career high.

Roark’s struggles, and those of other starters, are draining the life out of the bullpen. Ryan Madson warmed for the ninth inning with the Nationals down four. No one was left. When Madson gave up four more runs and could record only two outs, Mark Reynolds moved to the mound from third base and got the final out. The Nationals (45-44) took three of four from a losing team and moved back above .500. They have seven games before the All-Star break and are five games back of the Phillies and Braves in the NL East. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FINAL VOTE

Turner could join Nationals’ All-Stars Three Washington players were announced as members of the National League All-Star team on Sunday. Bryce Harper, top right, was voted in as a starting outfielder. Right-hander Max Scherzer, top left, and reliever Sean Doolittle, bottom left, also made the team. Shortstop Trea Turner, bottom right, is one of five finalists for the final spot on the NL roster, to be decided by fan vote. When Serena Williams steps out on Centre Court to play Evgeniya Rodina in Wimbledon’s fourth round today (10:30 a.m., ESPN), it will be a rare meeting of Mom vs. Mom. Such matchups could happen more often as parenthood becomes more popular on tour. There were six mothers in the singles draw in London this year including 23-time major champion Williams and another former No. 1 and two-time major champ in Victoria Azarenka. “At different points, we’ve had one or two mothers at a time. And then it’s grown to three or four mothers. And now we’ve seen that we have more, at present, than we’ve had in the past,” said Kathleen Stroia, WTA Senior VP for sport sciences and medicine. (AP)

Report: 7 teams trying to trade for Machado Seven teams have inquired about making a trade to acquire shortstop Manny Machado from the Orioles, The Baltimore Sun reported Saturday. According to the report, the Dodgers have made the most appealing offer — followed by the Diamondbacks, Brewers, Phillies, Braves, Indians and Cubs — but all the offers are said to be “very close” in value. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported Sunday that Los Angeles and Milwaukee have the most serious interest. Machado, 26, is hitting .313 with 21 homers and is set to become a free agent after this season. (EXPRESS)

Mickelson tamped down fescue grass with his foot in front of the seventh tee Sunday in WhIte Sulphur Springs, W.Va. He then called a two-stroke penalty on himself for improving his line of play, and later explained he “wasn’t really thinking” when he made the mistake. At the U.S. Open last month, Mickelson intentionally violated rules by hitting a moving ball. Kevin Na closed with a 6-under 64 for his first win in nearly seven years. Mickelson (74) tied for 65th. Amy Adams and Chris Messina consider how long they can go before acknowledging his excessive armpit sweat.

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘How It Ends’ Friday on Netflix

Drowning in sorrow The grim HBO miniseries ‘Sharp Objects’ can be both addictive and painfully slow TV REVIEW By appearances alone, HBO’s “Sharp Objects” looks to be a likely choice for the show of the summer. The eight-part miniseries (which premiered Sunday) has it all: the right source material (Gillian Flynn’s 2006 psychological crime novel), the right director (Jean-Marc Vallee of “Big Little Lies”) and, most of all, the right star — Amy Adams, who is always at home portraying damaged-goods characters who live in the muggy melancholia of the American elsewhere. Missouri, specifically, is where Adams plays Camille Preaker, a St. Louis newspaper reporter with a heavy drinking problem, whose sympathetic but demanding editor, Frank Curry (Miguel Sandoval), assigns her to travel back to her to hometown of Wind

Gap (pop. 2,000) to look into the murder of a young local girl and the recent disappearance of another. Does Wind Gap have a serial killer? In addition to bringing as many travel-size bottles of vodka as she can fit in a shoulder bag, Camille arrives in Wind Gap with an almost insurmountable amount of emotional baggage, revealed fleetingly to viewers in Vallee’s dribs-’n’-drabs technique — a hint here, a hint there. The sight of girls lazily roller-skating up and down the streets reminds Camille of her little sister, who died of an illness 25 years ago. Camille finds the coldest shoulder in Wind Gap comes from her mother, Adora (Patricia Clarkson), who, as the heir to the town’s hog-processing plant, is the richest woman around and

Patricia Clarkson and Henry Czerny play an affluent couple, as their wardrobes clearly illustrate.

has the most to lose from unseemly media attention. While the town searches for its latest missing girl, Camille meets Richard Willis (Chris Messina), a Kansas City detective who relates to her alienation from the

town and its culture. One could easily charge through “Sharp Objects” with an obsessive appreciation for the overall effort, propelled mostly by Adams’ effectively morose and complicated portrayal of Camille. But with Camille’s blackout drinking binges and Vallee’s artistic disdain for a linear edit, the hallucinatory obfuscation quickly becomes a bit much. “Sharp Objects” is a difficult, languid endeavor. As instantly addictive as the show can be, it’s maddeningly slow when it comes to plot. The writing is meticulously mapped out by creator Marti Noxon (“UnReal”), with help from author Flynn herself. Yet ultimately, the material is stretched past its ability to absorb. HANK STUEVER

BBC

Hugh Grant wonders why he can’t cuddle with the dog in “A Very English Scandal.”

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Stranger than fiction: Miniseries captures a peculiar U.K. scandal The theme music for “A Very English Scandal” is played by a bunch of buoyant violins, shimmering and flirting as if to say, “You won’t believe what you are about to see.” And indeed, the three-part BBC miniseries now streaming on Amazon is pretty unbelievable. At a time when homosexuality was illegal in Britain, a powerful member of Parliament writes love letters to a stable boy, calling him “Bunny.” In ink! On paper! A man shoots a dog on a dank and foggy night. In a murder trial, the judge tells the jury that the intended defendant was “an accomplished sponge.” But this tale is in fact based on true events. Member of Parliament Jeremy Thorpe befriended young Norman Scott back in 1961. He wrote him many loving letters. And he was accused of ordering a hit on his former lover to stop him from speaking out. It was, as the title says, a very English scandal: Buttonedup people did stupid and

horrible things while keeping up civilized public personas. Hugh Grant portrays Thorpe, dandily dressed in fine suits with vests and a derby hat. His chipper grin grows increasingly frownish as Scott keeps stirring things up, mainly because Scott wants Thorpe to get him a National Insurance card. In a brilliant stroke, Patricia Hodge, playing Thorpe’s sour mum, has exactly the same grimace on her face as she says unmotherly things to her son like, “Of course you’re ruined. You know that, don’t you?” And lanky Ben Whishaw is sprightly, dog-loving Scott, with poufy hair and a lot of charm but also a lot of courage. The series is a brilliantly hilarious exploration of the lies people tell and what they think they can get away with — including murder. It is about the secrets politicians keep and the people they trample over. With three hourlong episodes, it is the perfect length for a summer mini-binge. “Now [those are] some Russians I would totally collude with.” @JEROMEPMIRON, joking about Alex Ovechkin and his father, Mikhail Ovechkin, after Washington Post reporter Isabelle Khurshudyan tweeted a video of Ovi showing his father the Stanley Cup. Ovi took the Stanley Cup to Russia with him, as it’s a tradition for team captains to take the Cup to their home countries. It went with Ovi to Red Square, the Dynamo hockey club facility where he played as a teenager and his childhood home. “I wanted to be the guy who brings the Cup,” Ovechkin told Khurshudyan.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may feel that someone is intentionally standing in your way, but that is not the case. A little honest talk yields a productive agreement. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may have to do a little more research before you have enough knowledge to satisfy the demands currently being made of you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Travel is in the picture, but you may choose an unconventional way of getting to your destination. You do not have to go far. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may be waiting on an official verdict before acting on whatever decision is made. There are several things in the air. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) A past

situation allows you to see a current problem in a new light once you make the connection between the two.

FRIDAY’S SOLUTION

You can do a little more for someone else than you had planned — and the results do much for you as well. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may have a second chance of sorts today, despite any word to the contrary by those in charge. You know better what’s really going on. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You receive news that puts how you are feeling in perspective. Now you know that there’s nothing wrong with you.

TODAY: You just can’t hold back the Mid-Atlantic summer for long, and it returns to work along with the rest of us, but not oppressively so. We’re still under the influence of that high pressure, so skies remain mostly sunny. But temperatures are noticeably warmer with highs surging back into the upper 80s to near 90.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) It’s time for you to step up and do what you had promised to do some time ago. You shouldn’t be held accountable for any time lost. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A casual approach is recommended today, as any forceful attempt to get what you want is likely to reflect badly on you for some time.

Brandon’s love doesn’t worry about gender Panic! At the Disco singer Brendon Urie came out as pansexual in an interview with Paper magazine Friday. “I’m married to a woman and I’m very much in love with her but I’m not opposed to a man,” Urie said. “I guess you could qualify me as pansexual because I really don’t care. If a person is great, then a person is great.” Urie married Sarah Orzechowski in 2013.

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin got engaged Saturday in the Bahamas, according to TMZ. Bieber reportedly proposed to Baldwin at a restaurant, with the pop star popping the question after his security asked patrons to put their phones away. Bieber, 24, and Baldwin, 21, briefly dated in 2016 and started seeing each other again after Bieber broke up with Selena Gomez this past spring. Bieber’s father, Jeremy, seemingly alluded to the news with a photo on Instagram of Justin looking out at the ocean and the caption, “Proud is an understatement!
