Washington The Sunday airwaves brimmed once again with talk of what would — or would not — happen if lawmakers fail to meet the Aug. 2 deadline to raise the nation’s legal limit on borrowing. Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” that inaction “would be catastrophic for the economy” and added that “no responsible leader would say the United States of America, for the first time in its history, should not pay its bills, meet its obligations.” Across the dial on Fox News Sunday, Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., accused Geithner of “playing Chicken Little” and called his dire warnings irresponsible. Indeed, the United States might never have been forced to find out what would happen if it stopped sending Social Security checks to seniors or withheld paychecks for soldiers, but the country did briefly fail to pay some of its bills on time three decades ago. And even that short-lived incident offers a glimpse at some of the problems and costs that might arise if the stalemate on Capitol Hill continues. “You hear lot of people say, ‘The

President Obama, right, meets with congressional leaders, including House Speaker John Boehner, left, on Sunday, aiming to fashion a deficit reduction package for the next 10 years.

Obama: We ‘Need’ Debt Decision in 10 Days

President Obama says he and Congress “need to” agree on a budget deal in 10 days in order to meet an Aug. 2 deadline to increase the nation’s debt ceiling and avoid a government default. Obama spoke as he and the eight top House and Senate leaders assembled at the White House for a rare Sunday session to negotiate the terms of a deficit reduction package. The meeting came a day after House Speaker John Boehner abandoned efforts to bargain for a $4 trillion, 10-year debt trimming agreement. Boehner said a smaller deal that would reduce the deficit by about $2.4 trillion over the next decade was more realistic. (AP)

government never defaulted.’ The truth is, yeah, they did,” said Terry Zivney, a finance professor at Ball State University who co-authored a paper called, “The Day the United States Defaulted on Treasury Bills.” It happened in the spring of 1979. Congress once again had been playing a game of chicken with the debt limit, raising it to $830 billion only after Treasury Secretary W. Michael Blumenthal warned that the country was hours away from the first default in its history. That last-minute approval, combined with a flood of investor demand for Treasury bills and a series of technical glitches in processing the backlog of paperwork, resulted in thousands of late payments to holders of Treasury bills that were maturing that April and May. All things considered, the incident amounted to a minor blip. Treasury officials both then and now argued that the event was not even a default, but merely a delay caused by the internal logjam. And yet, the study by Zivney and his partner, Dick Marcus, found that even that brief failure to meet some obligations had expensive consequences: “The impact is smaller at first because only new debt is affected,” they wrote. “But over time, as the older debt matures and becomes refinanced at higher rates, the entire cost of the default is realized.” BR ADY DENNIS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Embattled U.K. Tabloid Prints Its Last As Murdoch arrives, paper issues apology for hacking phones London Rupert Murdoch touched down in London on Sunday to take charge of his media empire’s phone-hacking crisis as his best-selling Sunday tabloid, the News of the World, published its last. The scandal lives on despite his sacrifice of the 168-yearold paper at the heart of it. The scrapping of the News of the World has not tempered British anger over improprieties by journalists working for Murdoch, and his $19 billion deal to take full control of satellite broadcaster

In Brief

British Sky Broadcasting remains in jeopardy. The News Corp. CEO was seen reading the paper’s last issue as he was driven to the London offices of his U.K. newspaper division, News International. Later, he met with News International’s chief executive, Rebekah Brooks, who led News of the World when its reporters committed some of the most egregious ethical lapses. Murdoch, 80, has publicly backed Brooks, who insists she had no knowledge of wrongdoing. The drama gripping media watchers in Britain and beyond has expanded at breakneck pace following allegations News of the World journalists paid police for information and hacked into the

To the Bitter End Some of the 200 journalists laid off from News of the World appeared to sneak into Sunday’s final edition their own message to Rebekah Brooks, who kept her job at News International. Brooks led the paper at the time of the alleged phone hackings that spurred its downfall. Clues in a crossword puzzle included “Brook,” ‘’stink,” ‘’catastrophe” and “criminal enterprise.” A second crossword contained the hints “string of recordings” and what many interpreted to be a direct jab at Brooks: “Woman stares wildly at calamity.” The answer to that clue? “Disaster.” (AP)

In its last edition Sunday, the paper issued a full-page apology. “Quite simply, we lost our way,” the editorial read. The paper’s demise does not end the questions surrounding Murdoch’s media conglomerate, which

Officials: At Least 100 Missing After Boat Sinks

has been hugely influential in British politics for years. Chief among them: What did Murdoch, Brooks and other executives know about the actions of News of the World journalists? T he Gua rdia n newspaper reported Sunday that emails and memos from 2007 recently turned over to police indicate News International was aware that phone hacking was more widespread than publicly acknowledged. Closing the News of the World was seen by some as a desperate attempt to stem fallout from the hacking scandal and save Murdoch’s bid for BSkyB. The British government has signaled that deal will be delayed because of the hacking crisis. (ap)

More than 30 people were killed and 100 injured with the train jumped the tracks. The cause of the accident was not clear, officials said, though it appeared that the driver applied the emergency brakes.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh must “expeditiously” sign a deal that would have him transfer power to his vice president and step down, the White House counterterrorism chief told Saleh in a meeting at a Saudi Arabian hospital where the Yemeni leader is being treated for injuries sustained in a June 3 attack. It was the strongest and most public sign yet of U.S. pressure on Saleh, whose 33-year rule is being challenged by a five-month popular uprising. Saleh has promised several times to sign the deal, then balked at the last minute. White House envoy John Brennan also told Saleh that “assistance will flow to Yemen” when the deal is signed and implemented. (ap)

The Obama administration’s decision to suspend $800 million in aid to Pakistan’s military signals a tougher U.S. line with a critical but sometimes unreliable partner in the fight against terrorism. President Obama’s chief of staff, William Daley, said in a broadcast interview Sunday on ABC that the strained relationship between the U.S. and Pakistan must be made “to work over time,” but until it does, “we’ll hold back some of the money that the American taxpayers are committed to give” to the country’s powerful military forces. Daley suggested the decision

firmed that the suspension came in response to the Pakistani army’s decision to reduce the number of visas for U.S. military trainers. Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas Abbas, a Pakistani military spokesman, said the loss of aid would have no effect on military operations. “We have not been dependent on any external support for these operations, and they will continue,” he said. George Perkovich, an expert on Pakistan with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, said that if billions in U.S. aid didn’t change the behavior of the Pakistan military, then withholding it probably wouldn’t either. (Ap)

Backstory ... The U.S. has long been unhappy with Pakistan’s evident lack of enthusiasm for carrying the fight against terrorists to its tribal areas, as well as its covert support for the Taliban and anti-Indian extremist groups. But tensions ratcheted up in January, when CIA security contractor Raymond Davis shot and killed two Pakistanis who he said were trying to rob him. They spiked in May, when U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden during a covert raid in Abbottabad, the location of Pakistan’s military academy. (AP)

Metro’s New Name Game Schools, hospitals ask system to be included in signage for visibility As Metro prepares for the Dulles line, it has hired the designer of the original rail system map to integrate changes. Officials also hope to shorten some cumbersome station names, and they must approve names for the new line. At a board meeting last week, Metro officials shared findings from the focus groups about station names. In a 15-page presentation, some people said they found the new names confusing, but they supported having icons — an idea proposed by map designer Lance Wyman — as an aid for tourists. The focus groups found that shorter names, such as Rosslyn, Bethesda and Pentagon, were more effective than longer ones, such as U Street/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo. Among the proposed names for new stations that caused confusion was Herndon-Dulles East, for a station near the intersection of the Dulles Toll Road and Route 28. Some people thought it was referring to Dulles Airport. Some of the proposed names that have surfaced are familiar, while others are not. Lynne Baker, a spokeswoman for the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, which has a campus near McPherson Square, said in an email that the school

Metro officials say they are hoping to shorten some of the system’s longer names.

Focus groups found that shorter names were more effective than longer ones. asked Metro about placing its name on signs after “noticing that other local colleges and satellite locations have their names on the Metro stops.” Georgetown University would also like the increased visibility that having its name on a Metro stop would bring, said spokeswoman Rachel Pugh. It would help students “find our campuses more easily,” she said. Arena Stage, which has a dramatic new theater complex in

Southwest Washington, has also sought to announce its presence on a Metro stop. Desiree Urquhart, director of government and community relations for Arena Stage, said it “just makes sense” to have the name on Metro signs. “We’re the big dog on the corner of Southwest,” she said. Similarly, Holy Cross Hospital spokeswoman Yolanda Gaskins wrote in an email that having the facility’s name on a Metro stop would “make it clear to patients, visitors and employees that taking Metro to our hospital is a viable and desirable option.” No decisions have been made to change station names to anything specific, Metro officials stressed. Illegal Dulles Drivers Scrutinized MWAA cracks down on hustlers who dupe unsuspecting tourists Chantilly, Va. Once a week or so, a limo driver named Ahmed Nizam shows up near baggage claim carousel No. 15 at Dulles International Airport, the spot where the weary overseas travelers pour out. Dressed in a tie, white shirt and dark slacks, Nizam carries a sign showing someone’s last name. It’s a ploy. As passengers wheel their suitcases toward the taxi lines, Nizam makes his play. unsuspecting tourists to cover their parking lot fees. Most hustlers are immigrants who say they’re just trying to piece together a decent existence. Many times they have a reserved pickup and don’t need to solicit. But they still skirt the law even if it means risking their livelihoods and facing the opprobrium of fellow immigrants who play by the book. Airport police catch about four hustlers a month, down from about eight in the mid-2000s, said David Hehr, an airports authority police officer. He speculates that increased enforcement might have scared limo drivers away from soliciting.

On Parkwood Place NW in Columbia Heights, late-night revelry often progresses into early-morning gambling. On Saturday, a burst of gunfire at the crack of dawn left two men dead and another critically wounded. All three were shot in the head shortly before 6 a.m. outside a house in the 1400 block of Parkwood, D.C. police said. Two of the men were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third was taken to a hospital, where he was in critical condition, according to police. Police identified the slain men as Jimmie Lee Simmons, 32, and Domonique Barber, 31, both of NW. A gun was recovered from the man taken to the hospital, D.C. Council member Jim Graham, D-Ward 1, said. J u n e Q . W u (The Washington Post )

Cover Story Aisle Be There? There are pros, cons and etiquette lessons that go with destination weddings.

Josh Fletcher

‘Treat It Like a Vacation’

Erin Williams and Andrew Page asked their inner circle of friends before deciding to get married last year on the Big Island. The added costs and travel can add resentment from guests.

Blessing or Burden? Moving wedding ceremonies abroad adds dollar signs and tears for guests Washington To see her daughter marry, Ellen Stern needed more than a special dress and a stash of tissues. The Connecticut mother-of-the-bride, who had never traveled outside North America, had to apply for her very first passport and fly to the Caribbean on her very first plane ride. As if she didn’t have enough to be nervous about. “When they came up with Barbados, I was like . . . whaaaaa?” said Stern, whose daughter and son-in-law will celebrate their 10th anniversary next year. “I expected the temple, the reception — the traditional wedding.” Wedding tradition long ago gave way to the modern reality of far-flung families and friends traveling long distances for that special day. But couples seem more willing than ever to push things further,

though. Once there, Klein spent a week sleeping in a hotel, shuttling folks around in a rental minivan and refitting the groomsmen for tuxedos.

Mexico, Ulla Gonzalez, who lives in northern New Jersey, knew that she could use the tribulations of travel to limit the number of invitees. The guest list ended up at 30. The mother of the groom, however, did not care for this pruning strategy. “If we had the wedding around here, we could have had at least 125 people,” said Susan Myerson, who lives outside Boston. As a trade-off, she later threw a big reception for those left off the list.

Thinning the Crowd

A Way Out

Why do couples choose a destination wedding, anyway? A 2009 report by WeddingChannel.com and the Knot, a wedding website, posed that question to 2,216 destination brides. More than 80 percent who married in a foreign land said they wanted a “special, fun or exotic locale.” But 72 percent said they preferred a “more intimate wedding/fewer guests/close friends.” In other words, throwing a destination wedding has become a kinder, gentler way of keeping boorish Uncle Lou away. By marrying in Puerto Vallarta,

Of course, those who object always have an out: They can RSVP a simple, polite no. But that’s not usually an option for a close friend. To avoid imposing any burdens, Erin Williams surveyed her inner circle before committing to a wedding site. “The last thing we wanted was to create a hardship for the people we wanted at our wedding,” said the District resident. By the end of her round of phone calls, she had the answer for her April 2010 nuptials, a “unanimous ‘yes’ ” to the Big Island.

“My girlfriend and I can afford it, but we would rather use our hard-earned leave to go where we want to go.” — a fuming re a der who took part in one of the Washington Post Travel section’s recent online question-and-answer sessions about destination weddings.

rolling nuptials and honeymoon into one by hosting a destination wedding in a place where neither has ties.

‘A Lot to Ask’ Engagements and weddings have always been emotional, but now the tears could start months earlier. Eyes may well up at the sight of an invitation that reads like a tourism brochure and is stamped with dollar signs. Nycole Klein, who will attend a Maine wedding in October, quails at the idea of destination anything. “It’s a lot to ask of your guests,” she stated. T he Nor t hern Virginian, for instance, missed her best friend’s bridal shower in Oklahoma City because of budget constraints. “I didn’t do my maid-of-honor duties,” she lamented. She did make it for the nuptials,

Andrea Sachs (The Washington Post )

Guests without a job title at a destination wedding can at least “treat it like a vacation,” said Amy Eisinger, the New York-based editor of WeddingChannel. com. Her advice: “Try not to grumble about going to Jamaica.” Or elsewhere in the Caribbean, Mexico or Hawaii — the most popular destination wedding spots, according to Eisinger. Also, don’t be shocked if you end up in such top bachelor/ ette destinations as Miami, Vegas and Puerto Rico.

Presence Vs. Presents

One might think that because of the outlay of funds and time, plus the petty annoyances of airline security, lost baggage, cold showers, etc., you can skip the gift. That, sorry to say, is bad etiquette. Unless otherwise noted on the invitation, “a small token is expected,” said Anna Post, spokeswoman of the Emily Post Institute. (T wp)

Unbelievable Win Facing an early elimination, U.S. shocks Brazil in a World Cup classic

Meanwhile ... Lotta Schelin scored one goal and set up another Sunday as Sweden beat Australia 3-1 to reach the semifinals at the women’s World Cup. Next up, Sweden will play Japan, which upset host Germany in a quarterfinal match on Saturday. The other semifinal will feature the United States against France. Both semifinals will be played on Wednesday. (AP)

Women’s Soccer An hour after the game, Abby Wambach was still at a loss for words. Amazing. Riveting. Dramatic. Take your pick — any one of them will do. The Americans are into the semifinals after one of the most thrilling games in the history of the World Cup — men’s or women’s — beating Brazil 5-3 on penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie. Wambach tied it with a magnificent, leaping header in the 122nd minute, and goalkeeper Hope Solo denied the Brazilians again. “I’m at a loss and I literally cannot believe what just happened,” Wa m b a c h s a i d . “But we’ve got two games left.” For Brazil, it is yet another disappointment at a major tournament. And this one is sure to sting more than any other because Marta had it won for the Brazilians on Sunday, scoring her second goal of the game in the second minute of overtime for the 2-1 lead that would have sent the Americans to their earliest exit ever. But Erika stalled when she went down on a tackle, and the delay added three minutes of stoppage time to the game. That was all the time Wambach and the Americans needed, after pushing themselves to the limit while playing a woman short from the 66th minute on. Two minutes into stoppage time, Megan Rapinoe sent a blast of a cross from the left side that Andreia didn’t come close to getting her hands on. Wambach, one

2 2

of the best players in the world in the air, made contact and with one furious whip of her head, buried it in the near side of the net. Wambach let out a primal scream and slid into the corner, pumping her fists, and was quickly mobbed by teammates. It was the latest goal in World Cup history. The Americans, shooting first, made their three penalty kicks only to have Cristiane and Marta easily match them. But then it was Daiane’s turn — the same Daiane who’d given the U.S. a 1-0 lead with an own goal in the second minute

of the game. She took a hard shot, but Solo stretched out and batted it away. Though the U.S. still had to make two more, the celebration was already starting. After Rapinoe smoked the net with a blast and Ali Krieger converted hers, the Americans raced onto the field, their joy only matched by that of the pro-American crowd of 25,598. Wambach tackled Solo and U.S. coach Pia Sundhage even broke out her air guitar when AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” began to play. Shake the tournament, the Americans did. The victory came exactly 12 years after the Americans beat China in a penalty-kick shootout to win the title at the Rose Bowl. The U.S. moves on to Wednesday’s semifinals to play France, which eliminated England on penalty kicks Saturday. “It is a special moment for me and for this team,” Solo said. The U.S. has now eliminated Brazil at five of the past seven major tournaments. The lone consolation was that Marta’s goals, the 13th and 14th of her career, tied her with Birgit Prinz atop the all-time World Cup scoring list. The Americans also have won their past five meetings against Brazil. Nancy Armour (AP)

Rookie Cap Holds Up NFL Talks Pro Football A rookie wage scale and free agency for veterans appear to be the biggest stumbling blocks to ending the NFL lockout. Several people with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press that such key issues as splitting total revenue (the major reason for the dispute), the salary cap, fewer offseason workouts and the length of a new collective

bargaining agreement are close to being completed. The people spoke anonymously because details are supposed to remain private. Owners and players are preparing to meet again this week after two days of long negotiations last week. The sticky topics include limits on rookie salaries and signing bonuses. Another is the number of transition tags for free agents, with right of first refusal.

Weekend Rewind

With training camps scheduled to open in less than two weeks for some teams, time is growing short to reach an agreement to end the nearly four-month lockout without a disruption to the preseason. With court-appointed mediator Arthur Boylan on vacation this week, the two sides plan to negotiate in New York, where last Friday talks were slowed by differences over the rookie wage scale and guidelines for unrestricted free agents. (AP)

The Capitals traded forward Eric Fehr to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday for a draft pick and a prospect to free salary cap space. Derek Jeter homered on Saturday for his 3,000 career hit, becoming the first New York Yankee to reach the milestone. Steelers star Hines Ward was arrested Saturday on a drunken driving charge. The Indiana Fever broke open a close game to beat the Mystics 68-57 Saturday. Kyle Busch rolled to victory in the inaugural Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway.

Cup Is Half-Full for the Nationals The Nationals Jordan Zimmermann took a shutout into the seventh inning, Roger Bernadina and Rick Ankiel provided the offense, and the Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 2-0 Sunday to head into the All-Star break with a .500 record for the first time since 2005. This amounted to a rout for the

Nationals, whose previous 10 victories had come by either one run or in extra innings. They ended a three-game losing streak, too — and each of those defeats were by a single run. Zimmermann (6-7) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing four singles. He also struck out six and didn’t walk anyone, continuing his impressive return from reconstructive elbow surgery. He was nearly matched by Colorado’s Jhoulys Chacin (8-7), who gave up one run and four hits in seven innings. Bernadina hit a broken-bat RBI single in the sixth, while Ankiel hit his third homer of the season, off reliever Matt Reynolds

Alex Rodriguez is going to have surgery to repair the torn meniscus in his right knee, and is expected to miss four to six weeks. A Divine Call and Modest Response A real estate expert buys into the pastoral life

kris connor

Transitions

The Rev. J. Adam Sowder left a profitable position marketing his family’s real estate firm to become a clergy member in the United Methodist Church.

In the mid-2000s, Adam Sowder was living life at full speed. He was married to his high school sweetheart. He had a Radford University degree in cultural anthropology, a new house and a sky’s-the-limit job marketing the family real estate firm, Sowder Bros., which was winning awards for building and selling millions of dollars’ worth of homes in Virginia. Suddenly he ya n ked t he wheel. “I think I always understood a call but wasn’t really ready for it” until Thanksgiving 2005, Sowder says, when he broke the news to his brother about wanting to be a pastor in the United Methodist Church. “I felt a pull toward something more important than the business world. “It was challenging to leave when the company was built on ‘Sowder Bros.’ and the concept of family,” Sowder says. But after much contemplation and with his CONTINUED ON E2

gettingahead A Divine Call wife’s full support, Sowder enrolled in 2006 at D.C.’s Wesley Theological Seminary (202-885-8600; Wesleyseminary.edu). A master of divinity is the professional degree most mainline Protestant churches look for in clergy, says the seminary’s director of admissions, Chip Aldridge. Wesley’s program gives a grounding in the scriptures, preaching, counseling, worship leadership, church history and church administration. The 90 academic hours require at least three years, with five classes a week plus a weekly small group and a service activity (such as working in a soup kitchen or in an afterschool program). Students take one class at another area seminary (Sowder chose D.C.’s Dominican House of Studies); they also spend 10 to 14 days “immersed” in another culture or country. Students also complete an internship in a small rural church, a large urban or suburban church, a college, a military chaplaincy or a hospital or nursing home, “all of which represent the settings our graduates might go into, especially in the Mid-Atlantic region,” Aldridge says. Though Wesley is named for a founder of the United Methodist Church, the seminary is far from exclusive. The student body represents about 40 faiths, from Baptist and American Methodist Episcopal to United Church of Christ and Unitarian Universalist, many of whose members aren’t even Christian. And “before the past few years, we had a lot of mid-career changers,” Aldridge says, “but there’s been a steady increase in younger students.” In screening prospective students, theology schools look for more than just a solid college transcript and a bit of life experience. Wesley prefers students to come with “the support and approval of a faith congregation,” Aldridge says, as well as a strong liberal arts background “because you have to write and speak well.” He sees “a lot of Capitol Hill types — that’s another form of public service.” Tuition is $15,000 a year. “BUT THAT’S MINUSCULE COMPARED TO THE OPPORTUNITY I’VE BEEN GIVEN, TO REPRESENT GOD AND THE CHURCH IN PEOPLE’S LIVES, ESPECIALLY BIRTH AND DEATH.” — J. pus, which is adjacent to American University. Sowder, 31, commuted from Boyce, Va., 90 to 120 minutes each way. During school, he had the opportunity to pastor a church — three, actually — in “licensed ministry,” doing one sermon at each church every Sunday. And by graduation in May, he had three small children. “I was tired,” he says. But it was worth it. When one church needed a new fellowship hall, Sowder got to draw on all his training — from anthropology in designing the building to meet everyone’s needs, to real estate in meeting with contractors and reading plans, to church administration and leadership in guiding the community through. “God is in the details,” he concludes. “All those were not wasted years at all.” On July 1, the Rev. J. Adam Sowder began as pastor of Rectortown United Methodist Church, a 110-member congregation in Fauquier County. “The church is hungry for highly qualified, passionate people and will find a place for them,” Aldridge says. Worldly rewards are small: Regional starting salaries are in the low to mid $30,000s, though some positions have housing allowances. Sowder acknowledges that he’ll be in debt for years. “But that’s minuscule compared to the opportunity I’ve been given,” he says, “to represent God and the church in people’s lives, especially birth and death.” Faith — and not just the religious kind — played a big part in Sowder’s abilty to complete his career change. “One Holy Week, I had exams, seven services and a funeral,” he says with a laugh. “Knowing something is temporary helps ease the burden.” The same idea informs his advice to others. “Whatever you feel called to do,” he says, “if it’s important and necessary, it’s worth it. Have faith and go after it.” ELLEN RYAN

Positions Jacqueline Lawton, 33 Job: Playwright Salary: She’s earned $200 for a 10-minute play and $500 to $3,500 for one-act or fulllength plays. What She Does:

Lawton writes plays about love. She’s completed 30 — some of which were developed and produced at the Kennedy Center’s Page to Stage Festival and the Source Festival (Sourcedc.org) — and she has two more in the works. Writing is only a small portion of playwriting. The job also involves research — which Lawton conducts online and by watching films, plays and people — and getting the play produced. If you don’t have an agent who handles marketing (Lawton doesn’t), you can self-produce your shows by finding a venue and amassing a production team and cast, Lawton says. One way to get a site is to pay to join an event such as the Capital Fringe Festival (Capfringe.org). The other is by invitation from a theater seeking proposals for plays to show. Either way, the grunt work is on the playwright. “You’re doing everything — you’re doing marketing, you’re doing box office, you’re raising the money,” Lawton says. For “Deep Belly Beautiful,” which she self-produced in 2009 at Flashpoint (Flashpointdc.org), she recruited three friends to design the set and costumes. She also leased rehearsal space and created playbills. “What’s hard about being an artist is you’re truly at the mercy of who likes your work,” Lawton says. Would You Want This Job?

To do this job, it helps to have a “dual personality,” Lawton says, “of being able to work singularly with a vision … but then also to collaborate with

a director who is going to mold and shape actors and tell your story, and with designers who are going to bring out the set, lights, sound and costumes.” It’s a lot of work for little pay. “There’s not a lot of money in the work that anyone does in theater, unless you’re on Broadway,” she says. Lawton supplements her writing income by working as artistic associate and resident dramaturge at the African Continuum Theatre Company (Africancontinuumtheatre.com) and as a teacher at the University of the District of Columbia and Montgomery College. She also is director of new play development at Active Cultures Theatre (Activecultures.org) in University Park. How She Got the Job: At the University of Texas at Austin, Lawton earned a master’s in playwriting in 2003 and two bachelor’s degrees in 1999, one in radio, television and film

and another in theater and dance. In 2004, she moved to Baltimore to work at Center Stage (Centerstage. org) as the education associate. The next year she joined the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Co. (Woollymammoth. net) as a dramaturgy intern. She’s also had stints at the Shakespeare Theater Company (Shakespearetheatre.org) and Arena Stage (arenastage.org). How you can get the Job:

Getting a degree in playwriting provides a structured place to learn and practice and a network of contacts, but it’s not necessary. For those who choose to pursue a degree, local universities such as Catholic, Gallaudet, George Washington, Georgetown and Howard offer programs. To get into playwriting without a diploma, Lawton recommends making contact with local theater companies and seeing lots of plays. Stephanie Kanowitz

The other definition is that creativity tends to be something that we think of as mystical and elusive. But you can instill processes into your life that lead to those creative accidents more consistently.

If you look at some of the greatest artists throughout history, they had intense work ethics and set times when they would sit down and do their work. I believe we need to do the same thing if we want to experience that kind of “accidental” creativity.

at times?

Absolutely. The way I define creativity is problem solving. You have to come up with ideas and pull them together to form solutions. If you ask a lot of people if they’re creative, they say no. But if you ask if they have to solve problems every day, everybody would say yes. It’s simply a matter of reframing what creativity is. Instead of thinking about it as fine art, we need to reframe it as problem solving and realize that it’s imperative upon all of us to be creative.

the business world today?

The ability to think creatively on demand is probably one of the most critical skills in the marketplace today. We’re all being forced to deal with increasing amounts of information and workloads that are becoming more complex. You don’t just go to work and crank out widgets all day; you have to deal with a constantly shifting marketplace. I believe that the ability to think creatively is going to become much more important to people who want to thrive in a shifting landscape. BETH LUBERECKI

Students laugh and soak up some knowledge in an introductory class on water media at Arlington Arts Center.

Get Your Feet Wet A beginner’s course teaches students the basics of watercolors

Perhaps the most important skill taught in the class is observation. “People are accustomed to using their eyes every day,” Nunes says. “But when you look at an object as an artist, it’s a completely different experience.” Getting in touch with that viewpoint opens up a whole new world of possibility, she says. “Students might be able to only paint a vase of flowers in their first class. But over time, they will learn to draw anything.”

Skills A splash of color. A pool of light. A sea of negative space. It’s hard to describe a painting without using a few moist metaphors. This is even more appropriate when discussing watercolors, which achieve their luminosity by mixing H20 with artistry. Arlington Arts Center’s “Water Media – Stepping Into Color,” taught by Fulbright scholar Jenny Mullins (Jennymullins.com), teaches aspiring artists how to get the most out of watercolors without drowning their canvases. T h e B a s i c s : Yo u don’t need to be the next J.M.W. Turner or Georgia O’Keeffe to take this class. In fact, you don’t even need to be familiar with these famous watercolor artists. “This is for beginners,” assures Penelope Nunes, Arlington Arts Center’s director of education. “It’s very accessible.” Students must purchase their own supplies, including a variety of brushes, a

small receptacle for water, several water-soluble media and paper (a full list is provided upon enrollment). These materials are available at most art supply stores or online and cost around $40. Over the course of the four-week program, participants will work with different water-soluble media, including paints, pen and ink, watercolor crayons, pastels and acrylics. “This gives students the opportunity to test out different options,” Nunes says. “And ultimately hone in on their media of choice.”

What’s Next If f ledgling watercolorists want to further their education, they can enroll in an advanced water media class at the arts center in the fall. Or they can choose to practice alone. “It’s something you can do without a huge studio,” Nunes says. “You can do it at home.” No matter what, participants will have a chance to show off their efforts from this class, at two exhibits held by the center every year featuring student works. The Deal The next Water Media – Stepping Into Color program ($98) starts July 26 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Register at Arlington Arts Center (3550 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va.; 703-248-6800, Arlingtonartscenter.org). ne vin martell

A New Beckham David and Victoria welcome their fourth child (and first girl) 31

At the end of “Push,” the heartbreaking 1996 novel that introduced the character of Precious, baby Abdul represents a glimmer of hope amid the grim landscape of the main character’s troubled life. “When the sun shine on him like this, he is an angel child. Brown sunshine,” the HIV-positive Precious muses as she holds her son and wonders how much time she will have with him. In “The Kid,” author Sapphire picks up Abdul’s story about nine years later. His mother has just died, leaving the young boy confused, angry and alone — a state that will shroud him through the entire novel. (AP)

Writing frank scenes of sexual, physical and emotional abuse was tough, but Sapphire says she felt a responsibility to her readers and characters alike. “Not only was it emotionally draining, but I was frightened: How would people perceive this type of work?,” she explains. “I lived with that saying by [poet Rainer Maria] Rilke pinned over my desk, ‘An art object is ruthless and has to

For Precious, that meant learning to read and write; for Abdul, it means dancing. “I did not want to create a totally bleak picture,” Sapphire says. “Had I not had that thread of transformation through art, it would have been impossible for me to go to some of these places.”

But his life would have been a lot better if he’d been adopted after his mother died.”

Readers may be shocked and saddened by the beginning of Sapphire’s new novel, “The Kid,” the sequel to her celebrated 1996 debut novel, “Push.” In vivid prose and exacting detail, the New York-based poet and novelist describes the funeral for Precious Jones, the you ng woma n w h o s e s t r u ggle to overcome illiteracy, rape and finally AIDS made her a hero to readers and to fans of the 2009 film adaptation, “Precious.” “It was to provide some closure,” says Sapphire, whose real name is Ramona Lofton. “People would stop me on the street and ask me what happened to her. I’m an artist in the world and I had created this character, and I needed to let her rest in peace.” “The Kid” — which Sapphire will read from Monday at Politics and Prose — follows Precious’ orphaned son, Abdul Jones, as he languishes in the foster system and begins to define himself as an artist in New York. “I really wanted to explore his life and what it means that there’s no social network for him,” Sapphire says. “When his mother dies, Abdul literally falls.” “The Kid” proves to be just as dark at times as “Push,” but also

A Prologue

“Ho rrib le B oss es”

So, confession time: I get embarrasssingly excited about July being National Ice Cream Month — if you don’t try a new flavor combination every day, are you really celebrating? If you’re lactose intolerant, or if you just hate ice cream, it’s also Ernest Hemingway Month, according to Cuba Libre (801 9th St. NW), D.C.’s own Epcot-style Havana. (We’re guessing they By Fiona chose July because he Zublin was born on July 21, not because he died July 2, though there’s a nice symmetry to that.) Nowadays the daiquiri, much like the margarita, is unfairly associated with bachelorette parties and sorority bacchanals. Hemingway was too misogynistic to drink anything girly, so we must assume that the daiquiri — his libation of choice — was the manliest drink available in 1940s Cuba. Cuba Libre thus commemorates Papa’s 112th birthday with a slate of 31 special daiquiris, one for each day of July. Tonight’s is kiwi, Tuesday’s is blackberry-cranberry and the rest of the month is filled with other fruity flavors, like blueberry, rhubarb and pineapple. On the 21st, the regular weekday Caippy Hour (4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) will guest-star $5 Papa Doble daiquiris (Hemingway’s signature drink), caipirinhas, caipiorskas (cachaca and vodka) and sakerinhas (cachaca and sake). You can also grab the usual $4 small plates — we recommend the albondigas (otherwise known as meatballs) and the pineapple guacamole, because anything with plantain chips is worth your time.

‘Space Invaders’ In Sights DISNEY

Film Feature

The Gang is Back For its ‘Pooh’ reboot, Disney sticks with traditional animation Film Winnie the Pooh made his debut nearly 86 years ago. British author and playwright A.A. Milne wrote about the oddly named teddy bear in London’s Evening News. Christopher Robin, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga, Roo, Owl and Rabbit were introduced a year later in a collection of stories about the toys

of a little boy that come to life in his imagination. Pooh was a sensation in Britain for decades but didn’t really cross the pond until the early 1960s, when animation king Walt Disney acquired the film rights. Instead of making a feature-length film, though, Disney strategically decided to introduce the willy nilly silly old bear to American children in a 25-minute featurette, “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.” The animated short was so successful, the studio followed with “Winnie the Pooh and the Blus-

into production and was released. The featurettes were combined in 1977’s “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.” Now, more than three decades later, Walt Disney Animation Studios takes on “the bear of very little brain” once again in an all-new feature “Winnie the Pooh,” out Friday. The whole gang is back in the G-rated adventure comedy based on three of Milne’s stories. In a summer of noisy popcorn movies, “Winnie the Pooh” offers a gentler-paced alternative. No 3-D or CGI — it’s strictly old school in the traditional hand-drawn animation style. “It’s a nice, calm conflictlite environment,” says co-director Stephen Anderson. ANGEL A DAWSON

“Space Invaders,’’ the classic 1980s arcade game, is heading to the big screen courtesy of producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment’s Gigi Pritzker. The two have teamed up to develop the project and are now on the hunt for a writer. “Space Invaders’’ is credited with taking video games from a sideshow attraction to a mainstream obsession. With “Space Invaders,’’ the producers are facing an interesting challenge: The video game doesn’t have a builtin mythology, so on one hand a film won’t risk offending game fans. Conversely, coming up with a captivating universe, especially for video game adaptations, is no easy task. (THE HOLLY WOOD REPORTER)

First Date: Brunch at Rosemary’s Thyme Bistro. First Kiss: At a friend’s house party. We thought our kiss from the night before meant nothing.” How he Proposed: He surprised her just before she boarded a bus to New York City for Christmas. Most Hated Clothing Item: Her “Africanstyle overalls,” which are “a great Halloween costume but not my favorite outfit,” says Stephen. Pet Names: She is “bebounette,” the French word for baby with a “made-up cute ending.”

Melissa Rossman, Michael Wear Melissa, 22, is a grad student. Michael, 23, works in the White House. They will live in Friendship Heights after the wedding. The Main Event: July 17 in their hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., on the grounds of a historic mansion. They will exchange vows on an island in a small pond. How he Proposed: Michael took Melissa to the U.S. Naval Observatory for a tour (along with 10 Brownie Girl Scouts) and to look through the telescope before proposing (sans Brownies). Their song: “The Very Thought of You” by Billie Holiday, one of Michael’s favorite singers. When they were dating long-distance, Melissa sent him a Build-A-Bear with a recording of her saying the lyrics. Pet Names: She is “gnocchi nose,” “my little cantaloupe” or “little nugget of perfection.” He is “Bubbabooski.” Family Traditions: Melissa’s mother is baking the cake in lieu of her grandfather, a baker, who’d promised to but passed away. “I couldn’t bear to have just any bakery make my cake.”

The Main Event: On July 17, at a restaurant in Falls Church. How They Met: On Match.com. “I tried to recruit him to my online business. He seemed interested,” says Jihane. First Impressions: “I got the feeling immediately that she didn’t like the way I looked,” says Ian. “I was right, but her desire to turn her disinterest into a business contact proved to be her undoing.” “He took off his glasses — it was then I fell for him,” she says. First Date: Lunch and the Guggenheim museum. “He stole a kiss from me in the middle of the art.” How he Proposed: Ian was accompanying Jihane on a work trip to Germany and bought a ring there without her knowledge. Later, “I asked her what she would say if I asked her to marry me ... and she asked me if I stole the ring.” Their song: They like to sing “Genie in a Bottle” on road trips, Jihane says. Stupidest Fight: “Hoarding” the mail, says Jihane. “Papers everywhere, especially on the kitchen counter.”
