One local pizza chain is paying for employees to get tattoos of its logo

LINE SEGMENT CLOSED BETWEEN REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT AND PENTAGON CITY

THE DISTRICT Jovante Wood has nearly two dozen tattoos, but this is his first company logo. He got his last tattoo, an outer space motif that takes up most of his forearm, two weeks ago. Now he’s getting a 3-inch ampersand that’s part of the logo of &pizza, the D.C.-based company where he’s worked for 11 months. “I like the business and how welcoming it is,” the 22-year-old said as a tattoo artist injected ink into his bicep. “This is probably my best job, ever.” So, he says, he decided to make his commitment to the company permanent. And he is not the only one: More than 50 &pizza employees have the company’s ampersand, which it has trademarked, tattooed on their bodies. One employee has it etched onto her ribs. Others have it emblazoned on their chests, necks, wrists and behind their ears. The practice has become so popular that chief executive Michael Lastoria now foots the bill for any worker

— and the occasional customer — who wants to get inked. “We’re not doing this because we want [employees] to swear their allegiance to us like we’re some insane dictator,” said Lastoria, 36, who co-founded the fast-casual eatery four years ago. “We’re doing it because we listen to our people. They love the symbol, they love the look of it and they love what it stands for.” The ampersand, he says, represents the company’s willingness to listen to its employees. It was

“At first, it was just a job. But when I actually started working, it became more than that. I felt like this was the job for me.” JOVANTE WOOD, an employee of &pizza, on working for the company, which specializes i n made-to-order pizzas that sell for about $10

a service-line worker who first came up with the idea for the tattoos three years ago. Lastoria remembers thinking it was a great idea: “It really struck a chord,” he said. “So many employees started saying they felt a personal connection to the company.” Lastoria calls his employees “tribe members” and last month raised the company’s starting wage to $11.75 an hour. Paying for tattoos, he says, is another way of showing employees that he welcomes their ideas. “Outside of the fact that the ‘&’ is part of our brand, we don’t look at this as a branding opportunity,” Lastoria said. “What makes this special for us is that the idea came from our people.” As corporate logos go, &pizza’s ampersand is relatively innocuous, employees say. Even if they end up leaving the company on bad terms, well, the symbol could mean just about anything. “It’s just a a really cool idea,” said Brittney Wilkins, 23, a shift leader who last year got a red ampersand behind her right ear. “Even if I don’t work here forever, I won’t be upset. It’s a fun place to work, and I have a lot of good memories here.” ABHA BHATTARAI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION For Metro riders, one disruption ends, another begins. A stretch of the Blue and Yellow lines near Reagan National Airport, closed for maintenance since July 5, is due to reopen today. And a longer section of tracks in the same area will be shut down for a week, through Monday, cutting off direct rail access between the airport and downtown Washington. In the second month of Metro’s nearly year-long SafeTrack maintenance program, the third of 15 planned track-work projects is wrapping up: The Blue and Yellow lines between Braddock Road and National are set to open again, restoring a direct subway route to the airport from the southern parts of the two lines, in the Alexandria area. Now Metro will close a portion of the Blue and Yellow lines north of National, between the airport and the Pentagon City stations. While those two stations will stay open, the station between them, Crystal City, will be shuttered. For travelers arriving at National and trying to get downtown via Metro, shuttle buses will run from the airport to Pentagon City, where riders can board trains. For riders headed to National from downtown, Pentagon City will be the last rail stop. From there, shuttles to the airport will be available. Buses also will

serve the Crystal City station, running to and from the airport and Pentagon City. “Passengers should expect additional congestion on the airport’s roadways and in its parking facilities,” the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority warned in a statement Monday. Besides the shuttle buses, MWAA said, “there will be increased ground transportation options, including taxis.” Like the week-long maintenance shutdown between the airport and Braddock Road, the “surge” Metro plans to begin today is bound to impact tens of thousands of airport patrons. Last year, close to 2 million travelers passed through National in July, according to MWAA. So

far this year, compared with 2015, officials said, passenger traffic at the airport is up almost 2 percent. And about 20 percent of travelers who arrive at National to begin their trips normally use Metro to get to the airport. As they did during the previous SafeTrack project, Metro and Northern Virginia jurisdictions will increase the number of buses on regular routes to help meet the needs of commuters who decide not to ride the rails. During earlier projects, some commuters also turned to cars, bicycles and services such as Uber and Lyft. Still, since the first SafeTrack project began June 4, along the Orange and Silver lines between the Ballston and East Falls Church stations,

crowds and confusion, as well as long waits, have been common in subway work areas. The 15 SafeTrack projects, involving major infrastructure upgrades, are part of Metro’s effort to revitalize and improve safety in the 40-year-old subway, which has become prone to dangerous malfunctions after decades of maintenance neglect. General Manager Paul Wiedefeld ordered the overhaul after he took charge of Metro in late November. Just weeks before he arrived, Metro’s record of hazardous failures had grown so extensive that the agency became the first major transit system in the country to be placed under direct federal safety oversight. One charge dismissed in latest Freddie Gray trial BALTIMORE A judge dropped an assault charge Monday against a Baltimore police officer charged in the death of a black man injured in a police transport van. Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams dismissed the second-degree assault charge against Lt. Brian Rice, the highest-ranking of six officers — three white and three black — charged in the 2015 death of Freddie Gray. The move comes as people across the country protest two fatal shootings of black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota last week. The judge said the prosecution’s basis for the assault charge was that Rice used the van in

the alleged assault. Williams ruled that because Rice didn’t drive the van, prosecutors had no evidence. Rice still faces charges of manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct. One misconduct charge was dropped when the trial began

last week. Williams dropped the assault charge after the prosecution rested its case and Rice’s lawyers asked for the judge to acquit him. Earlier Monday, two other officers charged in Gray’s death testified at Rice’s bench trial. The trial resumed with testimony from Officer Edward Nero, who was acquitted, and William Porter, whose trial ended in a mistrial. After prosecutors asked Nero about his defamation lawsuit against prosecutors and a joint defense agreement he entered with other defendants, Williams ruled that Nero was hostile to the prosecution, allowing them to ask him leading questions. Gray died a week after suffering a spinal injury in the van, touching off protests and rioting in Baltimore. (AP)

ST. JOSEPH, MICH. Two bailiffs were killed and a deputy sheriff wounded in a shooting Monday afternoon at a courthouse in St. Joseph when an inmate being transferred from a cell grabbed a gun and opened fire, authorities said. The gunman was shot and killed by other bailiffs, but only after he had shot four people, two of them fatally, Sheriff L. Paul Bailey said Monday. In addition to the bailiffs and the deputy, the inmate shot a civilian in the arm. “I lost some friends today,” Bailey, who was visibly shaken, said during a press briefing. “So I’m here with a heavy heart.” While Bailey said investigators were still piecing together what happened in the corridor of the Berrien County Courthouse, he said that the incident occurred after “a fight occurred with that inmate on the way to the courtroom.” After this fight, the inmate — who was not named — was able to disarm one of the officers and use that gun to begin shooting, Bailey said. Ultimately, the attacker “was taken down by two other bailiffs” who shot and killed him, Bailey said. The people injured and killed by the attacker were not immediately identified, Bailey said, as authorities sought to make sure their families were notified.

An inmate Monday shot four people — two of them fatally — at the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph, in the southwestern corner of Michigan.

Chuck Heit, the Berrien County undersheriff, said both bailiffs were armed. He also said they were both “deputized by the sheriff,” which makes them the latest law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty — their deaths coming just days after a gunman killed five police officers in Dallas. The wounded deputy was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital and treated in the emergency room, Bailey said. This deputy was in stable condition,

Heit said. Bailey had said that “several” civilians were hurt, including the one who was shot, but he did not discuss how they were injured. All of them were in stable condition at Lakeland, he said. Gov. Rick Snyder posted on Twitter at 3:38 p.m. that state police “secured the scene at the Berrien County courthouse and started its investigation into the shooting that occurred this afternoon.” MARK BERMAN AND ELAHE IZADI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The call for a cease-fire came after Kiir’s forces overran an opposition base and killed 35 of Machar’s bodyguards. Theresa May will become Britain’s prime minister Wednesday.

Is May just what U.K. needs now?

Britain’s new prime minister brings stability as country faces radical change LONDON As the race to become Britain’s next prime minister narrowed, a veteran member of the Conservative Party’s old boys’ club characterized contender Theresa May as a “bloody difficult woman.” Kenneth Clarke didn’t know his comments, made before a television interview, were being recorded, but he didn’t back away from them once they were made public. Neither did May. “Ken Clarke says I am a bloody difficult woman. The next man to find that out will be Jean-Claude Juncker,” the next prime minister

$4K

of Britain told her colleagues last week, referring to the president of the European Commission, with whom May will negotiate Britain’s exit from the European Union. For only the second time in its history, Britain will have a female prime minister now that May will succeed David Cameron, who announced he will step down Wednesday in the wake of the United Kingdom’s vote last month in favor of a “Brexit.” Funnily enough, it was the suggestion that May was not enough of a woman that led to her victory. Andrea Leadsom,

May’s rival for the leadership post, suggested she would make a better prime minister because she had children and, therefore, a bigger stake in the country’s future, whereas May did not. Leadsom, under heavy criticism for the remark, withdrew from the race Monday, paving the way for May, 59, to be crowned leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister of Britain. Although she did not campaign in favor of Britain leaving the EU — analysts note she was clever in hedging her bets, perhaps with an eye on making a play for the

MAX NASH (AP)

nation+world leadership position either way — she will now get on with the task of implementing the Brexit. “The British people have spoken and there will be a different future for the U.K. — different but a brighter, more optimistic future,” she said. “We may have to go through some difficult times to get there, but get there we will.” Just a month ago, May was far down the succession list in the Tory party, behind Boris Johnson, a loquacious former mayor of London and one of the strongest proponents of a Brexit, and George Osborne, the finance minister and a Brexit opponent. But with Johnson and rival Michael Gove having flamed out and stalwarts in the “remain” camp, such as Osborne, having declined to run, May suddenly emerged as the favorite. Because she is the sole remaining candidate, she will be crowned the leader without having been elected by either the party or the public. And May has ruled out calling an early election, meaning she could hold the post until 2020. A pragmatic politician, she has often been called boring or dull and is sometimes compared to Germany’s Angela Merkel. But after three weeks of upheaval, that could be just what Britain needs. “She’s been in Parliament for almost 20 years, and she’s held a number of senior jobs. Given the extraordinary degree of political turmoil facing Britain right now, she offers stability and a reliable pair of hands,” said Tony Travers, a professor of government at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Still, May has made clear that she will press ahead with Britain’s exit from the EU, a process that will involve radical change however it is carried out. ANNA FIFIELD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

U.S. to send 560 more troops to Iraq to fight ISIS MILITARY The United States will send 560 more troops to Iraq to transform a freshly retaken air base into a staging hub for the long-awaited battle to recapture Mosul from Islamic State militants, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Monday. The new American forces should arrive in the coming weeks. Most of the engineers, logistics personnel, security and communications forces will concentrate on building up Qayara air base, about 40 kilometers south of Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city. They will assist Iraqi forces planning to encircle and eventually retake the biggest city anywhere that has fallen under ISIS control. The extremist group captured Mosul in the summer of 2014. It has used the city as a main headquarters since. “These additional U.S. forces will bring unique capabilities to the campaign and provide critical enabler support to Iraqi forces at a key moment in the fight,” Carter said on an unannounced visit to the country. It is President Obama’s second U.S. troop increase in Iraq in the last three months, and it brings the total U.S. force authorization there to 4,647. Asked how long America will continue to send more forces to the fight, Carter said that the U.S. is determined to defeat ISIS, and that if commanders need more troops, “I’ll ask the president for them.” LOLITA C. Kasich happy in an odd role Ohio governor will host GOP convention but plans to avoid Trump

REPUBLICAN TICKET

WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX

Ginsburg takes a risk by joking about Trump

SEAN RAYFORD (GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS Gov. John Kasich finds himself in an odd situation these days. He’s responsible for helping to safeguard a Republican convention he will not speak at, a nominee he will not support and an arena he probably will not set foot in. “It’s going to be strange,” Kasich said. Even stranger: When he arrives Sunday in Cleveland for the convention, he will be the one leading Hillary Clinton in a half-dozen battleground states — not presumptive nominee Donald Trump — according to a recent Ballotpedia poll. “I told somebody I should’ve quit earlier — I might have won!” he joked during an interview at the governor’s mansion in Columbus. Things aren’t going badly for a guy who dropped out of the presidential race in May, having won just one state — his own — and whom some Republicans see as a bit too self-righteous. As the state’s chief executive, he will receive high-level security briefings at the command center twice daily. And he will be conspicuous, doing media events and throwing a party at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his supporters. But what you’ll never see is Kasich in the same picture frame as Trump. In addition to publicly

refusing to support him, Kasich rebuffed overtures in May from Team Trump to join the ticket, according to the governor’s political adviser, John Weaver. “He was not interested,” Weaver said. A Trump campaign official denied Sunday that such overtures had been made. Kasich has remained visible and loyal to his party while separating himself from a man he believes is dangerous for America. Kasich also is concerned that

In a boost for Democrats, Bayh is set to run again

Donald Trump said Monday that he expects to decide on his vice presidential pick by the end of the week and that he is leaning toward a “political” pick rather than a “military” one. “I have five people, including the general,” Trump said, referring to retired Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn. “I do like the military, but I do very much like the political. ... In my mind, I have someone that would be really good.” (TWP)

Former Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, 60, is expected to make another run for Senate in Indiana, Democratic officials said Monday, a development that would dramatically improve the party’s chances to win back the vacant seat, and Senate control along with it. The seat now is held by Republican Dan Coats, who is retiring. Bayh retired in 2010 after two terms in the Senate. (AP)

Trump will take down the Ohio Republican Party with him, so he plans to campaign aggressively for others, including Sen. Rob Portman, who is in a tough race with Democrat Ted Strickland. But Kasich said he feels no obligation to help Trump win Ohio, a crucial battleground state. “It’s not on me,” Kasich said. “If he was to lose Ohio and lose the election and people would blame me, that’s just life.” LOIS ROMANO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

It’s become a cliche to joke about moving to another country if a certain presidential candidate wins. Generally, though, you don’t hear a Supreme Court justice making that kind of joke. But that’s what Ruth Bader Ginsburg did this weekend in a New York Times interview as she slammed Donald Trump. “Now it’s time for us to move to New Zealand,” she said, recalling what her late husband would have said. She is known for pushing the bounds of a justice’s public comments, but some say she went too far this time. “I find it baffling actually that she says these things,” said Arthur Hellman, a University of Pittsburgh law professor. “She must know that she shouldn’t be.” Her comments could affect the court if she had to recuse herself from a case involving Trump. As political commentator Jeff Greenfield tweeted: “If there’s a redo of Bush v. Gore, how does Ginsburg not recuse herself, given her Trump comments?” As Greenfield notes, Ginsburg was a part of the court that decided who the president was when the 2000 election was thrown to the Supreme Court, so this isn’t uncharted territory. Hellman said Ginsburg’s comments could muddy the waters when it comes to decisions not just involving Trump but also his policies — something that could come up should he win the presidency. DALLAS Military service changed the Dallas gunman from an extrovert into a hermit, his parents said in an interview excerpt published Monday. Micah Johnson’s mother, Delphine Johnson, told TheBlaze website that her son wanted to be a police officer as a child. His six years in the Army Reserve, including a tour in Afghanistan, were “not what Micah thought it would be ... what he thought the military represented, it just didn’t live up to his expectations.” His father, James Johnson, said haltingly and through tears: “I don’t know what to say to anybody to make anything better. I didn’t see it coming.” Micah Johnson, 25, fatally shot five officers in Thursday’s attack while hundreds of people were gathered in downtown Dallas to protest recent fatal police shootings, and wounded at least nine officers and two civilians. Dallas Police Chief David Brown clarified Monday that Johnson was killed with a bomb delivered by a remote-controlled robot on the second floor of El Centro College, not in a parking

Hitting just .256 entering the All-Star break, Harper says he sees no cause for concern NATIONALS Again and again during a sometimes sluggish first half, Bryce Harper insisted he “felt great.” As his average dipped below .250 and his power disappeared for long stretches, the 2015 NL MVP never admitted concern. “Physically, I’ve felt great. Mentally, I think I’ve been good,” Harper said. “I haven’t been down or anything like that. I’ve had a blast with this team.” Should anyone have concerns about a player with 19 home runs who is tied for fifth in the NL in on-base percentage? His

numbers would yield boundless optimism for most 23-year-olds. For Harper, they are a regression because he has proved he can do better. Talent like his comes with expectations that can never be fully exceeded — or fully met. That talent also tempts its owner to attempt the spectacular when the very good will do. Hitting coach Rick Schu said Harper “jumps” and pulls out of his swing too soon when he’s trying to do too much. When he does that, he pops out or rolls over groundballs, which happened

more often than not as he hit .200 in May then .280 with three home runs in June. To Harper, nothing about those quiet outs made him wonder about mechanical trouble. “Of course guys have holes in their swings, but I don’t feel like I do,” said Harper, the Nats’ lone starter in today’s All-Star game. “When I go up to [bat], I don’t want to think I have a hole or anything like that. I think I can hit any pitch.” But what, then, is responsible for that dip in May and June that only recently flipped? “He tries to live up to all this,” Schu said, holding his hands up around eye level. “I think you just have to get back down to being a

NBA There couldn’t have been a more fitting time for the news of Tim Duncan’s retirement to begin to leak out than after Kevin Durant announced his blockbuster decision on July 4. That it was followed up by an eight paragraph press release Monday morning confirming the Spurs forward’s 19-year career had ended was even more fitting. No press conference. No rally. No celebration. That’s exactly how Duncan, 40, wanted it to be. He was never going to have the Kobe Bryant retirement tour. He was never going to be feted from city to city. That’s simply not how Duncan went about his career or his life. His nickname is “The Big Fundamental.” His signature shot was a mid-range jumper that banked in with a ruthless efficiency. Duncan was unquestionably the best player of his generation — the NBA’s bridge from Michael Jordan to LeBron James — and one of the game’s 10 best players ever. Where he fits inside that group is up for debate, but he’s the starting power forward

on any all-time team. His presence allowed Gregg Popovich — now considered one of the greatest coaches of all time — to coach the team the way he wanted. That’s because Popovich was able to treat Duncan the same as the 15th man on the roster. With Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, he formed the most enduring trio of his generation. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Duncan’s remarkable career was his consistency. He

Draymond Green arrested in assault case in Michigan

Reynaldo Lopez appears in All-Star Futures Game

Draymond Green, the Golden State Warriors forward and U.S. Olympic team member, was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor assault and battery near the Michigan State campus, police said Monday. The alleged incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in East Lansing, where Green played in college. If convicted of assault or assault and battery, Green could face 93 days in jail, a $500 fine or both. (AP)

On Sunday at Petco Park, Nationals prospect Reynaldo Lopez took the mound for the World team, faced three batters from the U.S. squad and induced outs from all three. Lopez, a 22-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic, has a 3.19 ERA for the Nats’ top two minor league affiliates. May 12. He had been rendered ineffective for most of the series. All Duncan proceeded to do was score 19 points in 34 minutes. The 21-year-old center is projected to spend most of his time with the Capitals’ AHL affiliate in Hershey, Pa., but Washington has indicated that it will use a 14th forward spot to give its deserving prospects NHL experience. With a 6-foot-4, 191-pound frame that looks NHL-ready, Sanford could get a look if injuries clear the way. After the first day of annual development camp for Caps’ prospects this year, Sanford was asked how prepared he is for professional hockey. He smiled and gave a savvy answer. “I really haven’t thought about it that much,” he said. “I’m just kind of looking forward to going back next year and being an upperclassman and leading there.” In 2013, the Capitals traded three picks to move up to draft Sanford with the last pick in the second round at 61st overall. Last season as a sophomore, Sanford appeared in all 41 games for an Eagles team that advanced to the Frozen Four. He scored 13 goals with 26 assists, improving on a freshman season in which he had seven goals and 17 assists. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

STUDIES SHOW ...

Carrie Underwood prioritizes exercise, even if that means multitasking on her tour bus.

Staying country strong FITNESS A few hours before she got ready for the CMT Music Awards last month, country music star Carrie Underwood hopped on the Periscope live video app for a quick Q&A with her fans. One question submitted from a viewer caught her eye: “Are you pedaling?” Underwood, who was visibly moving around in her seat on her tour bus, laughed. “Yes, I am. I’ve got a little desk cycle,” she said, pointing the camera down to show her sneakers strapped into the machine. “I’m really multitasking, trying to get a little workout in.” Stars — they really are just like us. Underwood was facing an all-too-familiar exercise conundrum: You know you need to work out, but who has time? It gets worse in the summer, when you go on vacation and leave behind a normal routine. But Underwood and the rest of the Nashville lineup have a particularly intense problem this time of year. In country music, one of the most common ways for rising stars to solidify their status

(and earn money) is to land a slot on a big, corporate-sponsored annual summer arena tour. So staying in the best shape of your life becomes even more critical. Not only are you physically running around massive stages, but you also want to be at your high-energy best during the show. However, there are logistical challenges: Days are packed with sound checks, interviews, meet-and-greets and, hey, you may want to get some songwriting in. Not to mention that you’re routinely trapped on a bus or plane for many hours a day. What do you do? You get creative. Dierks Bentley lifts weights

Dustin Lynch rolls out workout equipment in a mall parking lot. Kelsea Ballerini runs up and down amphitheater stairs. Whether or not you have access to equipment, it’s all about quick solutions. Erin Oprea, a personal trainer in Nashville who works with singers including Underwood and Ballerini, knows artists are crunched for time and is a major proponent of exercising in “quick bursts.” “This relates to any person — we

If they do have time, they can jog the arena or hotel staircases. Or even run on a treadmill while rehearsing a song to build endurance. Nutrition is also a crucial component of staying in your best shape. For country singers, this is especially difficult when they hit the summer fair and festival circuit and are constantly confronted with, well … “Funnel cakes, hot dogs, hamburgers, beer,” ticked off singer Chase Bryant. These entrees may be tempting, but Bryant is focused on putting on the best live show possible. He works out for about ut an hour every day and will regularly larly set up weights and a rope pull outside his tour bus in a parking king lot. He mostly sticks to water ater and coffee on the road and eats iet. a protein-heavy, low-carb diet. “They may be drinking onstage tage in that red Solo cup … but the rest of the day has to be so good to balance this out,” said John Payne, ne, a Nashville trainer who has worked rked with country stars for years. ars.

A wedding guest I’m dreading

Howdy, neighbor.

Q. My fiance wants to invite his best friend and his wife to our very small wedding. The wife makes a sport out of making fun of people behind their backs, which unnerves me since I was bullied in school. The prospect of having her at our wedding scares me; just the thought brings tears to my eyes and knots to my stomach. How do we reconcile my fiance’s friendship with my feelings on our wedding day? UPSET BRIDE “Very small” can mean a justice of the peace, or it can mean one bartender instead of four. If it’s an actual wedding celebration, you simply won’t be able to get away with excluding the wife without causing a serious rift in that friendship. And is that friendship worth sacrificing, when, ironically, it would create its

own discomfort and stress during your wedding? By all means, see if your husband can broach the topic that you’re not a fan of gossip and that it can rub you the wrong way. And do what you can to be insulated from her. But this is really a question of which choice does the most long-term damage.

It sounds like they’re not thinking about you, but about how many good “Dating Stinks” stories they can get out of you. You can be a broken record every time they bring it up: “That is so not what I care about now. But did you know what happened at my work the other day?” And you can try a more serious conversation: “It bothers me that dating seems to be the only thing you view as interesting in my life. Would you mind not asking about it so much?” But give deeper thought to whether these friends are willing to connect with the real you or are just looking for a single sidekick from Central Casting. Maybe it’s a conversational tic; maybe they’ll get the message with a bit more clarity. Or maybe you’ll decide that you need to find people who view you more three-dimensionally. Or a flaming demon Shetland called Ponyta gallops across the Mall. With an upward flick of a finger or thumb, the Pokémon Go player attempts to capture these creatures with Pokéballs. Repeated captures of the same type of creature yield candies. Force-feeding enough candies to a Pokémon causes it to grow in power. GAMES Early Friday morning, 19-yearold Shayla Wiggins hopped a fence to walk along the bank of Wind River in Riverton, Wyo. She was looking for Pokémon, the collectible cartoon critters that debuted in Japan in 1996. What Wiggins found instead would reduce her to tears and spark a police investigation. A week before her discovery, Wiggins’ search for Pokémon would have been met with concern or ridicule. But Pokémon Go, which was released in Australia and New Zealand on Wednesday and rolled out in the U.S. the day after, has turned looking for video-game characters in the real world into a real hobby. For the uninitiated, Pokémon Go is a new augmented-reality game that invites players to hunt for digital Pokémon on their smartphones, placed using GPS and an algorithm by the company Niantic Labs. The catch is that the game, unlike the original Nintendo series and most video games, requires physical exploration. By trading a Game Boy for a smartphone, Pokémon Go can filter reality into a giant game world. The effect is part birdwatching, part geocaching and part trophy-hunting, with a heavy dose of mid-1990s nostalgia. To collect Pokémon, players walk to a location and spy

dating app Tinder, according to analysts at SimilarWeb. By Friday, Pokémon Go players had installed the app on one of every 20 Android phones in the U.S., and users were spending an average of 43 minutes a day playing — much longer than the average time spent using Twitter, for instance. Similar data are

not available for Apple phones, but Pokémon Go rocketed into the top-grossing app position Thursday on the back of its optional in-app purchases. Because the critters can pop up virtually anywhere, they already have — in offices, at funerals and in delivery rooms. Playing in the physical world comes with physical problems, too. Pokémon Go has led to fractured metatarsals and bruised shins. The game’s loading screen cautions players to pay attention to their surroundings. Worse still is the crime. On Twitter, Omaha police reported a Pokémon Go robbery. As The Washington Post reported Sunday, Missouri police say players were robbed after visiting remote PokéStops. The perpetrators allegedly used digital items called lures to make the PokéStops more alluring to Pokémon — and the players who would follow them. Four suspects, all teenagers, were charged with armed robbery, as police recovered a handgun from one teen. For Wiggins, Pokémon Go meant discovering a body. “I was walking toward the bridge along the shore when I saw something in the water,” she told KTVQ. “I had to take a second look and I realized it was a body.” Authorities think the death was accidental, according to CNN. Wiggins was shaken by the discovery. But she, like thousands of people, plans to return to play Pokémon Go another day. BEN GUARINO

Finding Pokémon The floating leaves that appear as you walk around mean that Pokémon are in that vicinity and that you may encounter some if you head over there. You can find Pokémon everywhere, but they do tend to be densely populated in their own “habitats” — e.g., water Pokémon near ponds, lakes, rivers, etc. Supposedly, fire Pokémon hang near gas stations.

Catching Pokémon Turn the AR slider off when trying to catch Pokémon. It makes it easier since you don’t have to move your phone around to “find” the Pokémon. Pokémon are easier to catch if you wait until the colored circle is smallest.

Despite his horrendously rude behavior, Charlie believes that his hard-hitting tactics will help ratchet up her racket strategy. And they do. Soon Charlie starts winning, and gets wrapped up in her new

dream life — complete with a smoking-hot tennis star boyfriend and a personal stylist. But then Charlie realizes she’s lost touch with loved ones because she’s so caught up in herself. But as with previous Weisberger heroines, failure doesn’t provide the wake-up call that success does. When Charlie returns to Wimbledon, what comes next may or may not surprise you, depending on how you feel about tennis princesses. The delightful thing is that it doesn’t matter. If you’re looking for a fast-paced romance with believable characters, Weisberger serves it up right. BETHANNE PATRICK

A few clouds pass through, but the chance of rain is minimal as high pressure hangs on for one more day. Overnight lows drop back into the upper 60s.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You

may not be able to continue doing what you’ve been doing once you realize how it is affecting someone you love. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may be relying on technical assistance to see you through, but the truth is that success depends on your ingenuity, and yours alone.

PEARLS BEFORE SWINE | STEPHAN PASTIS

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You

may find someone quite captivating, but take care that what develops remains as professional as possible. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’re eager to reinvent yourself in some way, and you can do it successfully if you make most of the changes away from home.

Actor Bradley Cooper and his girlfriend, model Irina Shayk, took in a tennis match at Wimbledon on Sunday, where cameras caught them in what appeared to be a fight. The stadium’s cameras panned to them during a tense moment in the match, as Shayk appeared to wipe tears from her eyes and kept her face averted from Cooper. The actor smiled at her for several seconds before turning back to the match. Though many outlets and Twitter users declared that they must be having a fight, a source helpfully explained to E! News, “They were not fighting. Everything is fine.” (EXPRESS)
