É:Wha Ad_]^j H_i[iÊ Ef[di The final installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy opens in select theaters midnight Thursday and nationwide Friday. Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine star.

EXWcW L_i_ji A[o IjWj[i President Obama heads to Cincinnati on Monday, and then onto four stops in Florida on Thursday and Friday. Vice President Biden will be campaigning in Ohio on Thursday.

Power of incumbency: As president, he can set the national agenda. He used the anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death to remind voters of his national security credentials. He made a direct appeal to Hispanics by announcing a more lenient immigration policy for people who came to the U.S. illegally as children. Demographics: Obama leads Romney among women, African-Americans, Hispanics and youth — key voting blocs that could help him capture battleground states. Likability: No matter how bad the economy gets or how low Obama’s job approval ratings dip, polls show many Americans still like the president.

Where They Stand Now

C_jj Hecd[o 7:L7DJ7=;I0 Picking a vice president: Announcing the decision will ensure he can dominate headlines, for a few days at least, in the middle of an otherwise slow summer, and could provide a fundraising boost.

<ekh cedj^i \hec ;b[Yj_ed :Wo" President Obama has an edge in support among women, African-Americans, Hispanics and young people, groups that could swing the race in November. But there are indications that Obama’s supporters aren’t as enthusiastic about him as they once were. As the White House challenger, Mitt Romney can seize on the attention that accompanies the selection of a running mate. But as he appeals to independent voters, he has to fend off charges that by moving to the middle, he’s changing core positions for political purposes. A look at Obama and Romney’s assets and liabilities:

The Olympics: The 2012 Games in London are made for Romney as he looks to showcase one of his signature achievements, running the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. Super PACS: Romney has exceeded fundraising expectations, and he’s also getting lots of help from wealthy Republican donors and some Supreme Court decisions. The Republican National Convention: The spotlight will be on Tampa, Fla., at the end of August, where Romney will accept the party’s nomination and he and his running mate will make their debut as the official ticket.

Strong surrogates: The Obama campaign has two popular surrogates: Michelle Obama and Vice President Biden.

B?78?B?J?;I0

B?78?B?J?;I0

Health care: When Romney called the individual mandate of Obama’s health-care law a penalty and then a tax, it weakened his ability to attack Obama on health care.

Economy: There is no greater threat to Obama’s re-election prospects than the economy.

The International AIDS Conference will run from July 22-27 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in D.C. It is expected to draw more than 30,000 people from around the world.

Waning enthusiasm: Obama himself acknowledges that his candidacy isn’t as exciting as it was in 2008 when he was a political newcomer.

GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

?dj[hdWj_edWb 7?:I Ikcc_j

Outside money: Romney and other groups are expected to spend more than $1 billion during the campaign, with a lot of it paying for attack ads on the president.

Lack of second-term specifics: Obama’s re-election rationale is based more on broad themes than specific policy objectives for a second term. JULIE PACE (AP)

Moving to the middle: Romney is working to appeal to independent, swing and other voters. But moving to the middle is a dangerous endeavor for a politician who’s been accused of changing his core positions to accommodate political realities. Staying in the spotlight: Without the bully pulpit the presidency allows, staying in the spotlight through the Olympic Games and long summer vacations will be challenging. Defining himself: Romney’s policies still aren’t well known to many. KASIE HUNT (AP)

Penn State’s Next Phase Weary happy valley tries to move on after child-abuse scandal

Michael Pilato had put a halo over Paterno’s image after the coach’s death in January but removed it Saturday after a report that Paterno and others buried allegations of child sex-abuse against ex-assistant Jerry Sandusky. Pilato added a blue ribbon on Paterno’s lapel symbolizing support for child abuse victims, a cause the artist said Paterno had endorsed. (AP)

They’ve had to reconcile the school whose sports programs vow “success with honor” with one of the worst scandals in sports history. Almost inconceivably, they have been forced to reconsider the integrity and iconic status of the late Joe Paterno, the longtime football coach whose program helped turn a school focused on agriculture into one of the nation’s biggest and most respected research universities. In the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal — and a report that said school officials hid accusations against him — the school is bracing for civil lawsuits and perhaps NCAA sanctions. Meanwhile, Penn Staters are trying to protect Happy Valley, the almosttoo-good-to-be-true nickname for the campus enclave at the foot of Mount Nittany and the protective veil the community feels in its cen-

tral Pennsylvania home. “I think it’s one of the finest universities around, and the crimes of a few doesn’t dictate the university’s reputation,” said Craig Lehnowsky, whose son just finished getting three degrees in eight years. On Thursday, former FBI Director Louis Freeh issued a report that said Paterno, former university President Graham Spanier and two other school administrators buried allegations against Sandusky out of a desire to “avoid the consequences of bad publicity.” After all these months, many have come to the conclusion that

the school is still the same tightknit, happy place they imagined it to be. Others contend that the Happy Valley image is a construct and that the Freeh report confirmed the way Penn State has been run for years: to protect the school at all costs to avoid negative publicity. Penn Staters also want to move on. “It’s a new coach, it’s a new team,” said Christian Beveridge, 40, a masonry restoration worker who grew up near the campus and was working on a building there Thursday. “We’re going to keep on going.” MARC LE V Y (AP)

Final preparations continue Sunday at a venue within London’s Olympic Park. The two-week games will begin on July 27.

London’s Olympic Rush Venues are abuzz with final prep as the games approach BedZed With the opening ceremony less than two weeks away, there’s a mad dash to the finish line at the Olympics and it has nothing to do with sprinters. Hundreds of construction workers are toiling away inside the Olympic Park, laying cables, installing seats and adding the last layers of sparkle and polish to the venues.

There’s plenty to do. “It’s looking a bit industrial, isn’t it?” said Chris Allen, a Londoner who came to the edge of the park to have a look. “I am not seeing England’s green fields. I do hope it’s going to look better.” Shades of Athens, where chronic delays pushed workers to the brink to complete preparations in time for the 2004 Summer Games? Hardly, say London organizers who have prided themselves on finishing their massive construction project ahead of time and on budget. Things may look a bit messy now, they say, but all will be fine by the time the curtain goes up, on July

Egypt’s Military Issues Veiled Warning to Islamists 9W_he Egypt’s top general on Sunday raised the stakes in the military’s political standoff with the Muslim Brotherhood, saying the armed forces will not allow a “certain group” to dominate the country. Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi’s comments came only hours after he met with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who urged him to work with President Mohammed Morsi, of the Brotherhood, on a full transition to civilian rule. the fall last year of Hosni Mubarak, and the Brotherhood, the country’s strongest political force, are in a competition over power that has

intensified with Morsi’s winning of the presidency last month. Days before Morsi was sworn in on June 30, the Brotherhood-led parliament was dissolved and the generals gave themselves broader authority and put severe limits on the president’s authority. Tantawi, Mubarak’s defense minister for 20 years and the most senior of Egypt’s ruling generals, did not specify the Brotherhood in his comments Sunday, but his reference that the military would not allow the group to hold sway was clear. Monday is crunch time for Olympic arrivals at Europe’s busiest airport, London’s Heathrow, because that’s the day the Athletes Village opens at London’s Olympic Park. in the remaining seats and completing the landscaping. International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said it’s normal for host cities to face a flurry of last-ditch issues, and the last thing organizers need at this point is a crisis over readiness of the venues. They’re also coping with the fallout from a bungled contract by private security group G4S that forced Britain to call in about 3,500 extra troops — many just returned from Afghanistan — to fill the shortfall. part in the Music on the Mall program — a joint venture among Metro, the National Park Service and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton. Metro first invited artists to share their talents in 2007.

Asato said the number of performers selected will depend on the talent pool. Performers must pass a background check and will not be permitted to sell merchandise or solicit in any way while performing. The performances at Metro stations and on the Mall will run from July through September. Acts of all types are encouraged to audition, though fire eaters might want to skip this one. Metro Probes Computer Outage Software shutdown caused all 5 lines to close twice in 2 days MWi^_d]jed Metrorail officials were struggling Sunday to find out why a software program for tracking train locations broke down over the weekend, forcing two complete shutdowns of all five lines on the nation’s secondbusiest subway system. “We are still investigating,” said Metro spokeswoman Caroline Lukas. “We don’t know what the cause was yet.” Hundreds of passengers were

stranded in the two incidents and dozens of trains were forced to idle for up to 30 minutes Saturday afternoon and again early Sunday morning until the system was restored. The trains resumed normal operations Sunday and officials said they did not anticipate any problems for the Monday morning commute, but they plan to have extra personnel available to deal with any glitches. The problems are the latest in a string of incidents in recent weeks including train breakdowns, air conditioning problems, a derailment on the Green Line and track problems that have been linked to

the system. The first blackout occurred around 2 p.m. Saturday when Metrorail’s equipment in its Operations Control Center in Landover reported that the system for monitoring trains was not working. The second shutdown occurred at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday and lasted until about 1 a.m. Metro officials said the system was able to operate safely during the two breakdowns because it can function without visuals. Falls Church police said early Sunday they were investigating the case as a possible homicide-suicide, in which the alleged shooter subsequently killed himself. But police later in the day said they could not definitively say that the suicide victim was the killer, pending ballistics tests and further investigation. The names of both men were not released Sunday by police. But the Vietnamese-American Chamber of Commerce and witnesses at the scene identified the homicide victim as Tai Phan, 51, of Annandale, Va. During a Wednesday breakfast with other officers, police officials have said, the officer threatened to shoot the first lady. Credit Cards Put Students to the Test Parents mull how should teens handle money in college

Parents of college-bound students have a decision to make as offers stream in for their soon-to-depart teenagers: Should they send their freshmen off to campus armed with a debit or credit card to learn how to handle money? Or is it better to keep firm control through the Bank of Mom and Dad? The Credit Card Act that took effect two and a half years ago made it more difficult for anyone under 21 to get a card. But under-21s can still obtain a credit card if they have a qualified co-signer or proof of sufficient income to repay the debt. That makes parents, as the likeliest co-signers, more involved.

9h[Z_j 9WhZ Iebe

9e#I_]d[Z 9h[Z_j 9WhZ

Credit card issuers have differing standards in determining whether an applicant under 21 has the ability to make payments. Some may say it’s enough if he or she has a job and can afford the minimum monthly payment. That can take the decision out of Mom and Dad’s hands.

Co-signing should only be an option if the student can use a credit card responsibly, says Bill Hardekopf, who operates LowCards.com, a credit card comparison site. If so, a card with a very low limit is a good way to start building credit without undue risk.

Some students under 21 have upperclassmen, friends or siblings sign for them to avoid parental hassles. But if the student can’t pay, the co-signer is responsible for all the debt, and the credit history of both parties will be affected.

:[X_j 9WhZ If you don’t think your college kid is ready for a credit card, you can opt for a debit card linked to a checking account. But these cards don’t help build credit scores.

Fh[fW_Z 9WhZ

I[Ykh[Z 9h[Z_j 9WhZ These cards are backed by prepaid deposits, making them more manageable as well as easy to obtain. Cards that report to a credit agency can help build the student’s credit score. When applying for a card, ask which agencies it reports to.

These cards work like debit cards but are not connected to checking accounts. Many can be registered online for reviewing transactions and balances. Although less risky, they don’t come with the same protections as credit and debit cards if lost or stolen. DAVE CARPENTER (AP)

Free Syrian army soldiers brace for battle with President Bashar Assad’s forces in Syria’s Idlib province in these images captured by Syrian citizen journalists Friday.

Officially a Civil War Red Cross rebrands 16-month conflict after reports of a new massacre

Ceh[ ed Ioh_W The city of Yabrud is an oasis of calm in war-torn Syria, as it appears to have peacefully fallen under rebel control. The Post’s Austin Tice describes the scene. See washingtonpost.com.

Syria’s 16-month bloodbath crossed an important symbolic threshold Sunday as the international Red Cross formally declared the conflict a civil war, a status with implications for potential war crimes prosecutions. The statement came as U.N. observers gathered details on what happened in a village where dozens were reported killed in a regime assault. After a second visit Sunday to Tremseh, the team said Syrian troops went doorto-door in the village, checking residents’ IDs, killing some of them and taking others away. According to the U.N., the attack appeared targeted at army defectors and activists. “Pools of blood and brain matter were observed in a number of homes,” a U.N. statement said. On Sunday, Syria denied U.N. claims that government forces had used heavy weapons such as tanks, artillery and helicopters during the attack Thursday in Tremseh. Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the violence

was not a massacre — as activists and many foreign leaders have said — but a military operation targeting armed fighters who had taken control of the village. “What happened wasn’t an attack on civilians,” Makdissi said. He said 37 gunmen and two civilians were killed, a far lower toll than the one put forward by activists, who estimated the dead at more than 100. The U.N. has implicated President Bashar Assad’s forces in the assault. But some of the evidence suggested that, rather than an outright shelling of civilians, the violence in Tremseh may have been a lopsided fight between the army pursuing the opposition and activists and locals. ly all of the dead are men. Violence continued across the country Sunday. Activists say the uprising against Assad has killed

more than 17,000 people. “We are now talking about a noninternational armed conflict in the country,” International Committee of the Red Cross spokesman Hicham Hassan said. Previously, the ICRC had restricted its assessment to the hotspots of Idlib, Homs and Hama, but Hassan said the group had determined the violence has widened. The ICRC has previously hesitated to call it a civil war, as have others, including the U.N. That is because the rules of war override and to an extent suspend laws that apply in peacetime, including the rights to life, free speech and peaceful assembly. Stephen M. Saideman, an international affairs expert, doubted whether the declaration would change anything significant on either side. Assad and his supporters won’t stop fighting because they have too much to lose, Saideman said. The opposition “can have their spirits lifted by this, but they have been fighting a civil war for quite a while.” ALBERT AJI AND FR ANK JORDANS (AP)

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Sunday it considers the Syrian conflict a civil war, meaning international humanitarian law applies throughout the country. Also known as the rules of war, humanitarian law grants all parties in a conflict the right to use appropriate force to achieve their aims. The assessment is important for determining how much and what type of force can be used. The pronouncement also adds weight to any prosecution argument that Syria is in a state of war — a prerequisite for a war crimes case.

M^o Dem5 On Saturday, U.N. observers toured the Syrian town of Tremseh, where dozens were reported killed Thursday in what activists have called one of the deadliest events of the uprising. Activists’ death toll estimates ranged from 100 to 152, but they expected those figures to rise.

M^WjÊi D[nj5 Damascus still has some key allies, including Russia and Iran. But the Kremlin said Sunday that President Vladimir Putin will meet Tuesday with U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan, who is seeking to keep alive his peace efforts. Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi also said Tehran is ready to invite Syrian envoys for talks, according to media reports. The offer follows last week’s visit to Tehran by Annan. (AP)

Shortly before the U.S. men’s national basketball team took the floor for its first exhibition game on Thursday against the Dominican Republic, coach Mike Krzyzewski pulled Kevin Durant aside and informed arguably the second-best player in basketball that he wouldn’t start him and instead would need him to come off the bench for the star-studded Americans. In response, the coach got nodding acceptance. Krzyzewski was direct with Durant, the breakout star and leader of the gold-medal-winning world championship squad in Turkey two years ago. After the U.S. thrashed the Dominican Republic by 54 points, with Durant scoring a game-high 24, the District native joked that he was going to ask Thunder coach Scott Brooks to come off the bench next

season in the NBA. “But I don’t think that’s going to work out too well,” Durant said. “It felt good to come off the bench ... I was looking forward to having different roles, playing for USA, so it was actually fun for me.” Durant’s willingness to accept what some would consider a less-glamorous role speaks to his character, but it’s not out of line with the rest of the 12-man Olympic team, which features nine All-Stars and two league most valuable players. The team will host Brazil in an exhibition Monday at Verizon Center. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo created that selfless culture when selecting the players for the team, but Krzyzewski has maintained that environment of sacrifice and culpability by

encouraging the players to taper responsibilities from their respective NBA teams without losing their individual identities. Last time around, at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Krzyzewski made Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade the U.S. team’s sixth man. Wade led in scoring for the tournament, and notched a game-high 27 in the gold medal conquest of Spain. Colangelo and several of the U.S. players describe Krzyzewski as a “great communicator,” but Krzyzewski — who ranks first all-time among NCAA Division I men’s coaches in career wins and has four national titles at Duke — believes there is another reason that he has been able to connect so well with them. “The fact of being a college coach helps you, because I never have to compete against them,” Krzyzewski said. “I’ve coached 10 of these guys. Before Sunday, Stephen Strasburg spent nine days sitting on the longest losing streak of his short and brilliant career. Three-straight teams beat him. He had lost a pitcher’s duel at Coors Field, wilted in the Atlanta heat and yielded two homers in his home park. Against the Miami Marlins, on the mound and at the plate, he halted all of that. In the Nationals’ 4-0 victory at Marlins Park, Strasburg shut out the Marlins for six innings and provided the key hit during the Nationals’ first rally, which came after an intentional walk. In one day, Strasburg lowered his ERA to 2.66 and raised his batting average to .385 and added an RBI. On the mound, he dodged trouble, pitching around six hits and saving his strikeouts for big moments. Washington — which played without shortstop Ian Desmond, whose strained left oblique could sideline him for a few days — improved to 51-35. In the first three games after the All-Star break, the Nationals’ starting rotation has maintained the torrid pace from the first half. Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez and Strasburg have combined to allow two runs in 18 innings while striking out 22 batters.

Stephen Lombardozzi and Bryce Harper collide during the last out in the Nats’ win.

IjhWd][ 7Yj_l_jo Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen provided an odd sideshow with Bryce Harper at the plate Sunday. In the fourth inning, Guillen pointed a bat in the direction of either Harper or the Nats’ dugout and, as he is wont to do, yelled obscenities. He appeared to be upset at something Harper had done either while on deck or as he approached the batter’s box, perhaps sticking his bat out across the plate. Harper, who finished 0 for 4, would ground out to second base. (T WP)

In his past three starts against the Marlins, going back to the final day of last season, Strasburg has pitched 18 consecutive scoreless innings, striking out 23 while walking four and allowing 11 hits. Sunday, Strasburg had only two 1-2-3 innings, his first and his last. He ended his outing with a 96-mph fastball on his 105th pitch for his seventh strikeout. John Buck watched it catch the edge of the outside corner, then walked back to the dugout, Strasburg’s seventh and final strikeout victim. Closer Tyler Clippard, typically stellar, created a mess in the ninth. He allowed a leadoff single in the ninth and then walked the next two batters. Suddenly, in a four-run game, the tying run, in the form of Justin Ruggiano, walked to the plate with no outs. Clippard struck out Ruggiano, got a pop-up from Jose Reyes and preserved the shutout with a flyout from Omar Infante. A DA M K ILGORE

FIVE GOOD REASONS TO JOIN A CREDIT UNION Credit unions are not in business to turn a profit. They are member-owned not-for-profit institutions. This is one big difference between banks and credit unions, and it translates into a number of good reasons to become a member of a credit union.

1.

Excellent customer service: credit unions are interested in keeping you as a member, and in helping you reach your financial goals. When you succeed, the credit union succeeds.

2.

Keep more of your money: you will find higher savings rates for your savings account, certificates of deposit, and IRAs; lower interest rates for auto loans, mortgages and personal lines of credit; and credit cards with low or no annual fees and low interest rates.

3. 4.

Fewer fees: low cost or free checking with low or no minimum balance requirement.

Same services as a bank: direct deposit, ATMs, payroll deduction – but with a volunteer board of directors elected by the members.

5.

Additional services: many credit unions offer home buying education, financial counseling, group rates on life insurance, investment services, and other assistance to help you succeed financially. There are a number of ways you may be associated with a credit union. Check with your employer, fraternal organization, the branch of the military you served for, your trade association, or a community organization.

A Tale of Two Films Whereas the early cut of “Margaret” sometimes felt choppy and awkwardly paced, Kenneth Lonergan’s longer version has the fully operatic feeling originally intended. Aside from a few added scenes, it’s stuffed with overheard dialogue of New York’s many competing voices: bits of conversation that fill the film as Lisa awakens to the world and the city outside her teenage self-centric sphere. After lawsuits, endless editing delays and a theatrical release so miniscule it spawned a social media campaign, Kenneth Lonergan’s “Margaret” finally got a moment to celebrate. The playwright-director debuted his preferred, 188-minute cut of the film in a kind of belated premiere last week in New York. The event was a culmination of support for what some consider an unfairly treated masterpiece.

“Margaret,” Lonergan’s follow-up to 2000’s “You Can Count on Me,” was shot in 2005, but the director struggled to make an edit of 150 minutes or less, as he was obligated to do. Lonergan sought help from others, including Martin Scorsese, who, with his editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, made a cut of their own. Squabbles ensued with producer Gary Gilbert. Fox Searchlight sued Gilbert, who countersued. Finally, last year, a cut seconds shy of 150 minutes was released in just two theaters. That backstory has made “Margaret” one of the most curious releases in recent years and added a new chapter to the history of Hollywood tussles over editing control. Some critics loved the film, including Roger Ebert, who called the

film one of 2011’s best, and the New Yorker, which declared it “one of the decade’s cinematic wonders.” “Margaret” champions multiplied online, where they banded together as “TeamMargaret.” The film stars Anna Paquin as Lisa Cohen, a teenager on the Upper West side whose innocent playfulness contributes to a city bus (driven by Mark Ruffalo) running over and killing a pedestrian (Allison Janney). Confronted with death, Lisa spirals in moral confusion while pursuing justice for the accident, leaving her actress mother (J. Smith-Cameron) largely helpless on the sidelines. Last week, Fox Searchlight released the movie on Blu-ray, with Lonergan’s favored cut on a separate DVD. For now, the set’s available exclusively at Amazon.com. Matt Damon, who co-stars as a teacher in the film, says the process had been “devastating” for Lonergan: “He didn’t want to give up, and he’s put his whole soul into this thing to the exclusion of any other work he could have been doing.” At the New York event, Lonergan spoke without anger over the film’s troubles, but a kind of sanguine acceptance. “It was never a play,” he replied to one question. “It was always an epic, masterpiece film.” JAKE COYLE (AP)

B_jjb[ 8_] CWd0 “Shaun of the Dead” director Edgar Wright brought a big surprise about a tiny subject to Comic-Con over the weekend: Ant-Man is coming to the big screen. Wright will helm a film adaptation of Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” about a superhero who can grow large or small at will. The project has been in development for almost six years. “‘Ant-Man’ will kick your ass one inch at a time,” Wright says. The film does not yet have a release date or a cast in place. (E XPRESS)

H[#kf j^[ @kdYj_ed Squeeze’s founding members still have some juice left Cki_Y Pop songs are variously about falling in love, breaking up and getting back together again. That pretty much sums up the ongoing history of Squeeze, the British band famous for such songs as “Pulling Mussels (From the Shell),” “Up the Junction” and “Tempted.” After calling it quits twice, mainstays Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford are back together again (opening for the B-52s). The two met in 1973 when the then-15-year-old Tilbrook answered an ad 18-year-old Difford had placed in a London shop window. The ad said a band with a record deal was looking for a guitarist. There was no record deal. There wasn’t even a band. There was just Difford and his pile of lyrics. “Chris was the first person I met that wrote songs besides me,” Tilbrook says. “When I met him, I loved the way that he wrote and I think he felt the same about me. ... He was much more gifted lyrically than I was and I think my tunes were better than his.” It proved a winning combi-

Breakup to Makeup Squeeze broke up in 1982, reunited in 1985, broke up in 1999 and reformed in 2007, with Difford and Tilbrook as the only original members. “I’d hate it to become the way that it did become,” Tilbrook says. “I don’t think it has. I think it’s still exciting.” J.K.

nation. On early albums such as “Cool for Cats” (1979), “Argybargy” (1980) and “East Side Story” (1981), Squeeze spun tuneful, tightly composed vignettes. The songs brimmed with details of everyday life, Difford’s “kitchen-sink lyrics” made

sublime by Tilbrook’s sparkling melodies. Often, Difford’s lower voice provided a sandpapery undertone to Tilbrook’s soaring tenor. Squeeze’s best songs are about the small picture, pointillist pop that tells heartbreaking stories in three-minute slices. “I think that what we do is an attempt to satisfy ourselves,” Tilbrook says. “I remember in early Squeeze thinking ‘People are going to love this.’ I never understood why people didn’t. I find it hard to understand how comparatively simple things people seem to go nuts about.” JOHN F. KELLY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Film producer Richard Zanuck, who won the best picture Oscar for “Driving Miss Daisy” and was involved in such blockbuster films as “Jaws” and “The Sting,” died Friday of a heart attack. He was 77. Zanuck’s run of successes as an independent producer rivaled the achievements of his legendary father, Darryl F. Zanuck, who reigned over 20th Century Fox from the 1930s until age and changing audience tastes brought him down in 1971. The independent production company the younger Zanuck founded with David Brown produced “The Sting” in 1973, as well as Steven Spielberg’s first feature film, “The Sugarland Express,” in 1974 and Spielberg’s first blockbuster, “Jaws,” in 1975. “The Sting” also won the best movie Oscar, although Zanuck and Brown were not listed as its producers. “Jaws” was nominated for best picture. “In 1974, Dick Zanuck and I sat in a boat off Martha’s Vineyard and watched the mechanical shark sink to the bottom of the sea,” Spielberg recalled in a statement. “Dick turned to me and smiled. ‘Gee, I sure hope that’s not a sign.’ That moment forged a bond between

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Negativity may be all around you today, but you can rise above it and maintain a positive outlook. Focus on money matters early. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You will have a hard time choosing between two attractive options — but one in particular seems to be calling your name. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your own motives are pure, but the motives of someone you must work closely with today may warrant a close examination. Trust is a key issue. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may not be ready to accept the answers you’re getting — but you may not have a choice. You’re caught between a rock and a hard place. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You will have to dig deeper into certain issues today to uncover information you need to make the best of a tricky situation.

Friday’s Solution

Friday’s Solution

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’re not likely to forget one or two of the day’s events soon — and what you do in response is sure to get a lot of attention. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) It’s a good day to get the kinds of things done that have remained undone over the past several days — or even weeks. Stamina is good. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You will want to say almost anything today to get another to do what you need — but don’t promise the impossible!

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) An accidental development may be cause for celebration when all is said and done. You can surely milk this for a great deal. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) What you thought would be the ace up your sleeve is actually not likely to bring you any closer to victory. Disappointment won’t last long.
