The Global Harbor mall in Shanghai is aiming to keep men from getting bored on shopping trips with video game-equipped “husband storage pods,” UPI reported last week. The four “pods” are glass booths with chairs and PC gaming setups. Use of the pods is free, but a charge could be added later. No word yet on whether anyone has been offended by the assumption that only husbands get bored on shopping trips. (EXPRESS)

Girls robot team finally lands THE DISTRICT Twice rejected for U.S. visas, an all-girls robotics team from Afghanistan arrived in Washington early Saturday after a last-minute intervention by President Trump. The six-girl team and their chaperone completed their journey just after midnight from their hometown of Herat to enter their ball-sorting robot in the three-day high school competition that started Sunday in D.C. “I feel so happy that I can’t describe in words,” team member Fatemah Qaderyan, 14, told The Post at Washington Dulles International Airport on Saturday. “We felt so disappointed [when we were denied visa] because our team members had worked very hard for six months,” she added. Awaiting them at the gate at Dulles airport were a U.S. special envoy and Afghan Ambassador Hamdullah Mohib, who described it as a rare moment of celebration for his beleaguered nation. “Seventeen years ago, this

would not have been possible at all,” Mohib said in an interview. “These girls will be proving to the world and the nation that nothing will prevent us from being an equal and active member of the international community.” In the time since their visa dilemma drew global attention, the girls’ case has become a flashpoint in the debate about Trump’s efforts to tighten entrance to the U.S., including from many majority-Muslim countries. the temporary travel ban, but critics have said the ban is emblematic of a broader effort to put a chill on Muslims entering the United States. Trump’s personal intervention earlier in the week using a rare “parole” mechanism to sidestep the visa system ended a dramatic saga in which the team twice traveled from their home in western Afghanistan through largely Taliban-controlled territory to Kabul, where their visa applications were denied twice. The U.S. won’t say why the girls were rejected for visas, citing confidentiality. But Mohib said that based on discussions with U.S. officials, it appears the girls were rebuffed because of concerns that they would not return to Afghanistan. Ambassador Alice Wells, the acting U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, downplayed concerns that the girls might use the parole to stay in the U.S. or go to Canada. Competing against entrants from more than 150 countries, the girls are presenting a robot they devised that can recognize blue and orange and sort balls into correct locations. Sea-level rise in Md. gets a new timeline

CHANTILLY, VA.

Mistrial declared in fatal stabbing of Va. caterer

Report shows that the coast will be noticeably different in 20 years

ENVIRONMENT On Maryland’s Eastern Shore, rising seawater levels and chronic flooding threaten to disrupt daily life, damage homes and businesses and swallow land in the relatively near future, according to a new study. For some parts of the Eastern Shore, there soon may be no more there there. That’s the takeaway from a report released last week by the Union of Concerned Scientists. The study looks at the impact rising sea levels caused by global warming will have on coastal regions across the country. Maryland, with 3,100 miles of tidal shore along the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay will be particularly hard hit, according to the study. Only Louisiana has more locations that will be affected as severely. The study identifies 91 communities in 13 states that by 2035 will face chronic inundation — which it defines as when high tide floods 10 percent or more of its usable, non-wetland area at least 26 times per year. Twenty-two of those communities are in Maryland, including 12 on the Eastern Shore, which is coping with sinking land and rising sea levels. In some places, the predictions

A new study estimates that Maryland’s coastal regions will be noticeably different in just 20 years — and dramatically different in 80 years.

are ominous. The town of Crisfield, Md., on the southern Eastern Shore, will face chronic flooding of more than half its land area within roughly 20 years, the study said. The new report is not news to many who live on the Eastern Shore. For years now, various studies have delivered the same prognosis. What is different in this report is the estimates of how soon this could happen. In 20 years, the landscape will be noticeably different. In 80 years, it could be dramatically so. The findings of the study are in line with what Maryland officials have been predicting, said Catherine McCall, the director of coastal planning in the state’s Department of Natural Resources. “Sea-level rise is what the state

has been preparing for. We understand what that risk is and we’ve done a lot to prepare our communities for that,” McCall said. While multiple scientific studies have reached the same conclusions about sea-level rise and its impact, there is a hesitancy in some communities to address the issue because the findings can impact everything from business development to real estate values. “We’re in this transitional period where you still have a lot of people who don’t want to accept what’s coming down the road,” said Kate Patton, executive director of the Lower Shore Land Trust, a nonprofit that works to preserve rural land and communities on the lower Eastern Shore. The Maryland Zoo says a young giraffe that has been struggling since birth has died. Zoo CEO Don Hutchinson said Saturday that veterinary staff and an animal care team explored every avenue to try to nurse Julius back to health. Julius was born to firsttime mother Kesi on June 15, but he was not able to learn to nurse effectively and had insufficient antibodies to protect him from disease. To boost his immune system, he was given two transfusions of giraffe plasma, one from the Columbus Zoo in Ohio and another from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado. Dr. Samantha Sander, an associate veterinarian at the zoo, said his condition took a sharp turn downward, prompting a decision to euthanize the calf. (AP)

local THE DISTRICT D.C. police on Saturday destroyed 62 dirt bikes and ATVs —those vehicles whose riders travel in packs, flouting traffic laws and agitating motorists and pedestrians by popping wheelies on sidewalks. All had been abandoned, seized as part of a criminal investigation or taken because they were not registered and never claimed. Instead of auctioning the bikes — and as they do with seized firearms — police decided to send a different message. A machine separated metal

from plastic and rubber, and transformed the bikes and ATVs into shredded metal that will be sold all over the world. “We don’t want them to return to the street,” said Bill Sarvis, director of the D.C. police corporate support bureau, which is responsible for managing equipment, supplies and the agency’s fleet of vehicles. Charles Thompson Jr., a supervisor at the D.C. police maintenance lot at Blue Plains in Southeast, said he rides dirt bikes, but keeps them off-road. “They’re illegal on the street,

The job over, he jumped down and glanced up at the last of the bikes heading up the conveyor belt. “These won’t terrorize anyone anymore,” Thompson said. PETER HERMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Metro fires track manager TRANSPORTATION Metro said Friday it has fired a track supervisor for collecting overtime pay for periods when he was not working, a dismissal that results from what appears to be a major investigation of overtime fraud at the transit system. Other supervisors also were under administrative review for possible overtime abuse after the agency’s new inspector general

found that some track managers had earned more than double their base salaries in overtime for several years, according to a Metro statement. The action drew praise from Metro board members and area politicians who expressed hope it would save money and improve Metro’s reputation as an agency that holds its staff accountable. “It’s to send a message to our employees that you can’t do this, you can’t … game the system and collude with other people,” Metro Chairman Jack Evans said. Metro did not identify the fired

supervisor and released little information about the case, but there were signs the inquiry may be far-reaching. General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said Metro was adopting changes in business controls recommended by the inspector general to prevent future overtime fraud. “It is disturbing and disappointing that any employee would misuse overtime,” Wiedefeld said. “The supervisor in this matter has been dismissed effective immediately.” ROBERT McCARTNEY AND

Trump’s standing weakens POLITICS President Trump’s standing with the American people has deteriorated since the spring, buffeted by perceptions of a decline in leadership, a stalled agenda and an unpopular health care bill, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Approaching six months in office, Trump’s overall approval rating has dropped to 36 percent from 42 percent in April. His disapproval rating has risen five points to 58 percent. Overall, 48 percent say they “disapprove strongly” of Trump’s performance in office, a level never reached by former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and reached only in the second term of George W. Bush in Post-ABC polling. Almost half of all Americans (48 percent) see the country’s leadership in the world as weaker since Trump was inaugurated, compared with 27 percent who say it is stronger. Majorities also say they do not trust him in negotiations with foreign leaders — and in particular Russian President Vladimir Putin. Perceptions about the role of Russia in the 2016 election continue to be a drag on the president. The Post-ABC poll finds 60 percent of Americans think Russia tried to influence the election outcome, up slightly

Roughly 4 in 10 believe members of Trump’s campaign intentionally aided Russian efforts to influence the election, though suspicions have changed little since the spring. Among Democrats, 8 in 10 believe Russia attempted to influence the election and more than 6 in 10 think Trump’s team attempted to aid their efforts. Asked about Donald Trump Jr.’s June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer after being offered damaging information about Hillary Clinton, more than 6 in 10 Americans say the meeting — revealed last week — was inappropriate, with about a quarter saying it was appropriate. But almost half of all Republicans call the meeting appropriate. The survey points to many causes for Trump’s troubles. As Republican senators attempt to pass major health care legislation, the poll finds about twice as many Americans prefer the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, to GOP plans for replacing it — 50 percent to 24 percent. About a quarter volunteer either “neither,” say they want something else or offer no opinion. Independents favor Obamacare over the GOP replacement by a 29-point margin. Some 77 percent of Democrats prefer Obamacare to the proposed alternative. Meanwhile, only 59 percent of Republicans back their party’s proposal, though only 11 percent say they prefer Obamacare. The remaining 30 percent of Republicans say they prefer neither, something else or give no opinion. The Post-ABC poll was conducted July 10-13 among a random national sample of 1,001 adults reached on cellular and landline phones. The margin of sampling error for overall results is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. SCOTT CLEMENT AND DAN BALZ

The cost of saving lives With opioid overdoses exacting a higher price, communities ponder who should be revived

The District will increase its supply of naloxone, the drug used to reverse opioid overdoses, city officials said Friday. The D.C. Department of Health distributed 1,000 naloxone kits in 2016 as part of a pilot program, which prevented at least 290 residents from fatally overdosing, officials said. The city will now provide an additional 2,500 naloxone kits, which officials predict will last about 10 months, to two community health organizations that work with drug users. Opioid-related deaths in the city nearly tripled in the past few years — from 83 in 2014 to 231 in 2016. (TWP)

responding to multiple calls, for repeated victims, and they just don’t feel like they are making progress,” said Middletown Mayor Larry Mulligan Jr. “We can’t just keep reviving people. We have to address solutions.” In 2016, Ohio EMS units administered at least 19,570 doses of naloxone, according to state records covering the first nine months of the year. “You got half the population, probably more, who have been affected by this, and they understand and get it, that this is a disease,” said Scott Gehring, head of the Community Health Alliance for Butler County, Ohio. “And then you have the other side, and it’s very easy for them to say these people are just a burden.” In Maine, Republican Gov. Paul LePage has pushed to make overdose survivors pay for their Narcan. He also vetoed a bill to expand access to the medicine, but the legislature voted to override him. In Maryland, concerns about

“I wouldn’t say we are doing great, but we are treading water — we are holding our own.” VAN INGRAM, executive director for Kentucky’s Office of Drug Control Policy, saying the state has enough naloxone, for now. In Kentucky, officials pay for naloxone with a mix of federal funding and settlement money from a tobacco lawsuit.

funding have forced the Baltimore Department of Health to ration its dwindling naloxone supplies, providing kits to areas where the need is greatest. With the help of an algorithm, Leana Wen, Baltimore’s health commissioner, makes decisions about where to supply naloxone kits. “If this was any other illness, we would never accept rationing of an antidote,” she said. Congress last year approved

$1.1 billion to help address the opioid crisis, and local officials hope that even more federal funding is coming. The cost of naloxone often isn’t the only issue in dealing with overdoses. In recent weeks, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones vowed that his deputies will never carry Narcan because he doesn’t want them playing the role of paramedic. The sheriff’s stance puts him at odds with the broader law-enforcement community. According to the Bureau of Justice Assistance, 38 states have implemented naloxone programs for police officers. Butler County’s chief prosecutor, Michael Gmoser, gets angry when he hears about community opposition to naloxone. “What the hell business do we have saying, ‘You don’t get Narcan to treat your sickness; we are going to let you die’?” he said. “I don’t care how many times that sick person comes back asking for another shot of Narcan.” TIM CRAIG AND NICOLE LEWIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

HEALTH As the opioid epidemic worsens, communities have begun questioning how much money and effort they should be spending to deal with overdoses. State and local officials say it might be time for “tough love”: pushing soaring medical costs onto drug abusers or even limiting how many times first responders can save an individual’s life. The debate comes as demand for opioid antidote medication surges, creating new challenges for police and emergency crews. Often, the only thing separating whether an overdose victim goes to the hospital instead of the morgue is a dose of naloxone, a medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. Two doses of an injectable form of naloxone, Evzio, cost $4,500, up from $690 in 2014. The price of other forms of the drug, including the nasally administered Narcan, typically range from $70 to $150 per dose, officials say. “It’s not that I don’t want to treat overdose victims, it’s that the city cannot afford to treat overdose victims,” said Daniel Picard, a council member in Middletown, Ohio, who has proposed a controversial three-strikes policy in which first responders wouldn’t administer Narcan to repeated overdose victims. Compounding the costs, the potency of the newest batches of opioids often means first responders must administer multiple doses of naloxone to revive patients. Even if saved, an opioid user often is back on drugs within days, if not hours, officials say. “First responders are reaching a new level of frustration

Nearly half of the long-haul flights at some of the world’s busiest airports could face disruptions on the hottest days because of extreme heat under climate change toward the end of the century, a study said last week. On hot days, flights experience weight restrictions. For a plane to take off, the lift force pushing up on the plane has to be greater than the force of the weight of the plane. Warmer air has less lift force, because there are “less molecules of air for the plane to push off of,” explained Radley Horton, the principal investigator of the study. Focusing on five major aircraft at 19 of the world’s busiest airports, researchers at Columbia University concluded that 10 to 30 percent of flights scheduled for takeoff in the heat of the day will have to reduce their weight by an average of about 700 pounds — or three passengers and their luggage. Airports in hot regions, at high elevations and with short runways will see the biggest changes. These include airports in Bangkok, Dubai, Miami, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver, Washington D.C., and New York’s LaGuardia. Under extreme temperatures of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, as in Phoenix last month, regional planes can’t take off at all because regional aircraft are tested only up to 118 degrees, said a representative from American Airlines. nation+world With McCain absent following surgery, GOP lacks votes for passage WASHINGTONPOST.COM FOOD

Could horse meat show up on U.S. menus? It’s taboo to eat horse in America. Anyone who wants to kill horses for human consumption in the U.S. faces many obstacles — one of the biggest being Congress’ ban on Department of Agriculture funding for horsemeat inspections. But that may change: A House panel has voted to lift restrictions on horse slaughter for meat. The amendment that banned funding for horse-meat inspections, which was tacked on to the annual USDA funding bill, was voted down 27 to 25 by the Appropriations Committee on Wednesday. It’s not the first time American horses have been threatened this year — in May, President Trump’s 2018 fiscal budget proposed euthanizing or selling wild horses so the Bureau of Land Management can save money on their care. Animal rights activists will fight hard against easing horse-meat rules. The Humane Society of the United States reports that horse slaughter can be more brutal and result in more suffering for the animal, because it’s difficult to stun horses before they are killed. But one of the reasons Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., cast the decisive vote was because he said slaughterhouses in Mexico and elsewhere that buy U.S. horses are even more grim. Still, changing the law faces many hurdles, so it’s unlikely anyone in America will soon be selling horse burgers. MAURA JUDKIS

POLITICS Majority Leader Mitch McConnell decided to delay consideration of health care legislation in the Senate after Sen. John McCain’s announced absence following surgery left Republicans short of votes for their marquee legislation. McConnell’s decision amounted to another setback for GOP efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare after years of promises. McConnell issued his statement

late Saturday, not long after the office of McCain, R-Ariz., disclosed that he had undergone surgery to remove a blood clot from above his left eye, and had been advised by his doctors to stay in Arizona this week to recover. With McConnell’s health care legislation already hanging by a thread in the Senate with no votes to spare, McCain’s absence meant it would be impossible for the majority leader to round up the votes needed to move forward with the bill this week. “While John is recovering, the Senate will continue our work on legislative items and nominations, and will defer

In addition to two announced GOP “no” votes from moderate Susan Collins of Maine and conservative Rand Paul of Kentucky, there were at least a half-dozen other Republican senators who were withholding support from or expressing reservations about the bill McConnell released Thursday. In a Senate divided 52-48 between Republicans and Democrats, McConnell can lose no more than two GOP votes and still prevail. ERICA WERNER (AP)

Jackson gets first crack at Ross’ spot

Nationals get two relievers from the A’s

AP

MLB For months, a deal to repair the Nationals’ broken bullpen seemed inevitable. On Sunday, they finally made one, acquiring right-hander Ryan Madson and left-hander Sean Doolittle from the Athletics in exchange for Blake Treinen, left-handed pitching prospect Jesus Luzardo, and 2016 second-round pick Sheldon Neuse. The move immediately adds two experienced relievers to the Nationals’ bullpen for the rest of this season and at least all of next. The team will have a club option for Doolittle in 2019 and 2020, too. This is not just a patch — it is a legitimate upgrade around which the Nats can build next season. Who will close remains unclear. Manager Dusty Baker has been mixing and matching, and now he has more options for that role.

Asked if the Nationals were done dealing before the July 31 trade deadline, one person with direct knowledge of the front office’s thinking said, “Never — or after the deadline.” The price the Nationals paid signals an unprecedented willingness to absorb salary near the deadline. Washington will owe Madson the rest of his $7.5 million for the year and the $7.5 million he will make in 2018. Doolittle is owed the remainder of his $2.6 million salary for this season and $4.35 million in 2018. He would be owed $6 million in 2019 and $6.5 million 2020. Oakland likely would have required one of the Nationals’ elite prospects — Erick Fedde, Juan Soto, Victor Robles, etc. — to chip in any additional money. The centerpiece of the Nationals’ package is Treinen, the enigmatic right-hander. He showed enough promise that the Nationals made him their closer to start the season. But he showed so much inconsistency that he forced them

5

Sean Doolittle

to remove him from that role. Teammates, scouts and coaches raved about his 98 mph sinker, but Treinen, 29, struggled in key situations. This season he pitched to a 5.73 ERA in 37 appearances with a troubling 1.619 WHIP. Luzardo, the Nationals’ thirdround choice in the 2016 draft, was a first-round talent who fell because of Tommy John surgery. He is returning to form this season. Neuse, a shortstop and third baseman, entered Sunday hitting .291 for Class A Hagerstown. In exchange, the Nationals get two veterans with impressive relief résumés. Madson, who has a 3.40 ERA over 12 seasons in the majors, was on the Phillies’

2008 World Series team with Jayson Werth and Joe Blanton. The 36-year-old is in the midst of a particularly impressive season, pitching to a 2.06 ERA with a .788 WHIP — both of which are better than any reliever in the Nationals’ bullpen. Doolittle, 30, has been injury prone, but when he pitches, he pitches well. He missed part of this season with a left shoulder strain but has a .656 WHIP in 211/3 innings. He’s posted a 3.09 ERA in 254 appearances and is known for being particularly tough on left-handed hitters. This season, lefties are 0-for-23 with 12 strikeouts against him.

Nearly five years after throwing his last pitch in a Nationals uniform, Edwin Jackson, below, will return to the club Tuesday to start at the Angels, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The Nationals need a fifth starter for the remainder of the season after Joe Ross was lost until at least 2018 with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Ross will have Tommy John surgery Wednesday. Jackson, 33, has spent the last month with Class AAA Syracuse. The righthander last pitched out of the bullpen Friday, putting him on turn for Tuesday’s start. He pitched in three games for the Orioles this year, allowing seven runs (four earned) in relief before he was let go. He has a 1.77 ERA in the minors this year. (TWP)

Federer’s ‘fairy tale’ goes on 35-year-old continues dream year by winning eighth Wimbledon title

Muguruza may be fitting heir to Williams sisters

ADRIAN DENNIS (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

MEN’S TENNIS Roger Federer, who won Wimbledon at 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27 and 30, won it again Sunday at 35, further cramming his name into a men’s tennis record book in which it appears almost as frequently as it would in a biography. With his 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Marin Cilic of Croatia, Federer not only surpassed all other male Wimbledon champions with his eight titles. At 35 years, 342 days old, he also became the oldest Wimbledon champion in the Open Era. He extended his Grand Slam title total to 19. Ahead of the U.S. Open in late August, he now has a stunning yet realistic chance at winning 20 majors, which would have seemed farfetched only six months ago. In January, Federer had just come off a six-month hiatus in deference to a balky left knee. With that knee rested, Federer won the Australian Open from a No. 17 seed, and set off on a year he has called “a fairy tale.” That tale spun itself even flusher Sunday against an opponent whose recent battles with Federer suggested trouble

could have lurked. Cilic routed Federer in the 2014 U.S. Open semifinals and pushed him to the brink with a two-set deficit and three match points in the 2016 Wimbledon quarterfinals. On both those occasions, Cilic leapt out ahead. On this one, he did not. Cilic found the final’s first break point as Federer served at 1-2 early on, but he took a 96 mph second serve and backhanded it promptly into the net. Almost right from there, the

A Brazilian court confirmed that it tossed out the criminal case against U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte, determining that the robbery claim he made to NBC last year at the Olympics did not constitute the filing of a fake report. He claimed he and three other swimmers were robbed at gunpoint. Surveillance video showed them confronting security guards at a gas station, where they had stopped. (AP)

The U.S. Soccer Federation on Sunday announced six additions to its roster for the knockout phase of the CONCACAF Gold Cup: forwards Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore, midfielders Michael Bradley and Darlington Nagbe, and goalies Tim Howard and Jesse Gonzalez. After beating Nicarauga 3-0 on Saturday, the U.S. will play Wednesday against an opponent determined after Express’ deadline Sunday. (AP)

Despite broken spoke, Chris Froome maintains lead in Tour de France

2014 U.S. Open champion ranked No. 6 in the world barely could seem to direct a ball into play. By the start of the third set, he had a medical timeout with a trainer attending to his left foot. When Federer had stormed ahead 6-3, Cilic banged his racket onto his chair. When Federer led 6-3, 3-0, trainers visited Cilic, who appeared to sob in his chair and put a towel over his head. Federer connoisseurs got a limited ration of the usual treats:

There was a Federer backhand drop shot that seemed to yearn for a string quartet at courtside. There was a point at 3-5, at 30all, on which Federer nailed two backhands that seemed so rocketlaunched that the crowd gasped in an attempt to comprehend. By the end, the Swiss maestro enjoyed the jubilation that comes with 19 such occasions in a sport where people dream of doing it just once. CHUCK CULPEPPER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“It was a little boring to watch it. I don’t know how people go out there and watch games.” MANNY MACHADO, speaking Friday about his experience as an observer at last week’s All-Star Game in Miami. The Orioles’ third baseman, a Miami native, is a three-time All-Star but wasn’t chosen this year.

WOMEN’S TENNIS Shortly after beating Venus Williams in the Wimbledon final, Garbine Muguruza was given a purple-and-gold circular badge signifying that she is a member of the All England Club, an honorary status accorded to tournament champions. “I’m like, ‘I’m going to wear it right now,’” Muguruza said Saturday before attaching the pin to her white zippered jacket. Muguruza noted that after losing in the 2015 Wimbledon final to Williams’ sister Serena, she didn’t get the honor. This 7-5, 6-0 victory, along with Muguruza’s win against Serena in last year’s French Open, made the Spaniard, 23, the only woman to defeat each Williams sister in a Grand Slam title match. That marks her as a likely, and worthy, heir to the two women who changed tennis. Add in Muguruza’s aggressive, bold style and affinity for the big stage, and she looks like someone who could keep winning major championships. The key will be finding more consistency. Saturday’s final was Muguruza’s first at any event, not just a Grand Slam, since the 2016 French Open. How Muguruza handles her latest triumph will dictate her future. She has said she found it difficult to deal with the expectations that came with her first major title. That was one factor in her results since, including a 23-13 record this season entering Wimbledon. (AP)

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Ozark’

Keegan-Michael Key and Cobie Smulders in Netflix’s “Friends from College.”

We all had to be there

In ‘Friends From College’ on Netflix, ‘writing what you know’ hinders more than helps

STREAMING In the too-much-TV era, viewers are faced with an excess of shows that feel more like favors than fully formed works. Take Netflix’s “Friends From College,” which debuted Friday. The series, a tepid attempt to make the anxieties of a clique of Harvard alums who are turning 40 seem relatable and funny to the rest of us peons, is co-created by Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco. Like two of the characters, Stoller and Delbanco both went to Harvard and are now married. Care to bet on the likelihood that someone at Netflix is also one of their friends from college? Along with the show’s inability to find a consistent comic tone or a memorable storyline, “Friends

From College” makes embarrassingly poor use of a cast that deserves better. Keegan-Michael Key and Cobie Smulders star as Ethan and Lisa, who are crashing in New York on the sofa-bed of their college friend Marianne (Jae Suh Park). Lisa, an attorney, doesn’t know that Ethan, a novelist, is having an affair with Sam (Annie Parisse), another friend from college. Fred Savage plays Max, yet another college friend who is also Ethan’s literary agent as well as the group’s token gay person, trapped in a no-fun relationship with Felix (Billy Eichner), who is not a friend from college, but is Lisa and Ethan’s fertility specialist. Nat Faxon plays … Nat Faxon, basically, because there’s

Similar circumstances Andrea Savage in TruTV’s “I’m Sorry” seems like “Friends From College’s” lost friend, only she got stuck in another dramedy (which Savage also created and wrote) about a person balancing marriage, parenting and a career. Savage is funny, but the show never makes a case that viewers would enjoy hanging out with her. All we know is that enough people in comedy (like its producers Will Ferrell and Andy Samberg) have decided it’s her turn to have a TV show. H.S.

no room left to elaborate on his first-world problems (trust fund, bacheloritis, blah blah). As it fumbles through eight episodes, “Friends From College”

owes an obvious debt to a seminal work of sitcom TV that went by a shorter name (“Friends”) combined with a passing admiration for Nicole Holofcener’s excellent films (2006’s “Friends With Money” comes to mind). This will suffice for some, who might willingly overlook the show’s shortcomings just to gawk at apartments, houses and other signifiers of a life just out of reach. The show’s best moments are when Max’s boyfriend, Felix, asks him and his friends to grow up and get over themselves. Instead of being heard, he is eradicated. Viewers will feel a similar rejection. It’s a show with a chronic case of the “you had to be theres,” and about as much fun to be around.

Jason Bateman directs and stars in this 10-episode Netflix drama about a man who moves his family to the Missouri Ozarks when his dealings with a drug cartel go wrong. Laura Linney and Jason Butler Harner also star.

2 ‘Raven’s Home’ 10 p.m. Friday on Disney

In this “That’s So Raven” spinoff, Raven-Symone and Anneliese van der Pol reprise their roles from the 2000s Disney Channel series. This time, their characters are single moms raising their kids in one chaotic household.

3 ‘Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White’ 8 p.m. Sunday on Discovery

As part of Discovery’s kickoff to Shark Week, its annual summer event, Olympic champ Michael Phelps and a Great White will compete in an open-water race. (EXPRESS)

George A. On ABC’s reboot of “The Gong Show,” there seems to be enough talent and non-talent to go around.

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

‘Talent’ show: The bell tolls for the very worst on ‘Gong Show’ The revival of “The Gong Show” on ABC (10 p.m. Thursdays) would seem to be about as low-brow as TV can go. Like the original version from the 1970s, the 21st century edition has a smarmy host, celebrity judges and contestants who believe they have talent. Sometimes they really do. And sometimes they do the kinds of bizarre singing and rapping and carrying on we might do when, say, we’re home alone and feeling frisky. Only they’re doing it on national TV before a weekly audience averaging 3 million. But I would argue that “The

Gong Show” is not as low-brow as it seems. Four episodes in, it is emerging as TV’s most brilliant example of theater of the absurd. For starters, there’s the host, a lantern-jawed British comic named Tommy Maitland. He is really obnoxious. But he is not real. He is Mike Myers of “Saturday Night Live” and “Austin Powers” fame, encased in prosthetics and unafraid to make the worst jokes imaginable. We’re laughing at this simulacrum — or is he laughing at us through his fake skin? Then there are the contestants. A recent episode featured a contortionist who wrapped his limbs into pretzels; a fakebearded band called Meshugga

Beach Party that played “Hava Nagila” with a surf vibe, and a mum clown who swallowed razor blades. And they were the talented ones. There’s also the woman who wore a cat-eared hat and purred “Meow, meow, meow, wet food.” As judge Tracee Ellis Ross frequently wonders: “What is happening?” You may tell yourself you’re going to tune out. Yet you watch the full hour because you’re curious to see what will come next. Most likely it will be something typically not seen on TV, like a striptease performer in a bear suit or a man who puts on a pig face and hollers, “Sooo-eeeey.” When a performer is truly awful, the judges hit the gong and the act is over. Ungonged contestants earn 1 to 10 points. And each week, the winner gets a check for $2,000.17, which seems exactly the right amount for a preposterous exercise in public humiliation. @COLETTEFAHY_, reacting to Vogue’s August cover story featuring Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik about how the two don’t follow the men-women fashion dichotomy. The online headline declared the couple “part of a new generation embracing gender fluidity.” Commenters on social media responded with confusion. “Straight cis couple shares clothes, Vogue declares them gender fluid,” @mollypriddy tweeted. Vogue issued an apology for “missing the mark” and vowed to cover non-binary issues with more sensitivity.
