Offenbach, Germany, is looking for a way to get rid of a giant catfish that seems to have developed a taste for ducklings after eating all its fellow fish in the municipal pond, news agency dpa reported. The city government said Monday it had found a professional angler to catch the nearly 5-foot fish, first seen about a year ago, but no contract has been signed. The city plans to have its unwelcome guest caught alive and taken to a private pond. (AP)

A Florida man suspected of driving drunk told investigators that he hadn’t been drinking while driving — only while stopped at red lights and stop signs, TCPalm reported last week. Earle Stevens Jr.’s explanation did not move sheriff’s officials for Indian River County, who ended up jailing him on a DUI charge after a woman reported that his car repeatedly struck her rear bumper in the drivethru line at a McDonald’s in Vero Beach. Fort Smith, Ark., city directors have repealed a 1953 ordinance that essentially outlawed public dancing on Sundays, which locals called the “Footloose” ordinance. City Director Andre Good introduced the repeal after a resident told him about the law, which barred the operation of public dance halls or any place with dancing on Sundays. The law stated that public dancing on Sunday “greatly endangers the public health, safety and welfare.” (AP)

The Bullpen

79 Potomac Ave. SE

1201 Half St. SE

Tucked around the corner from Salt Line, All-Purpose offers traditional deck-oven pizzas, eggplant parm and giant meatballs, plus a welcoming (if small) patio.

The space has changed several times over the years, but the Bullpen’s formula is simple: cold drinks, live music and plenty of space to gather.

Aslin Beer Co.’s hazy IPAs and sour beers have made it a favorite with regional beer geeks. This pop-up beer garden runs through the end of the season.

It takes the fast-casual formula (pick a base/protein/sauce) and upends expectations with healthy and spicy Indian flavors. Get takeout, or dine in with beer and canned cocktails.

With up to 25 house-made beers available, Bluejacket is one of the largest breweries in the city. The flavorful beers run the gamut from crisp pilsners to potent double IPAs.

Justin’s opened before Nationals Park, and its sandwiches and craft beers have earned the loyalty of neighborhood residents as well as baseball fans.

The vast and vaguely dystopian brewery, with its outdoor fermenters and rough-hewn picnic tables, is a top place to bring a group before a game: There’s room for 750 people.

The Salt Line boasts a large (if often crowded) waterfront patio, an outdoor bar that pours both craft beers and cocktails on tap, and excellent seafood.

Be prepared to wait in line at this small shop, which serves wickedly creative flavors of ice cream and sorbet, such as honey lemon lavender and Thai iced tea.

The raw bar and menu of sustainable seafood are worth a visit, but Whaley’s is best known for its outdoor Rosé Garden, which is open in summer and serves all manner of pink-hued wines.

Right next to Nats Park, The Bullpen is a great place to stop before a game.

The water in the fountain at the center of Dupont Circle in Northwest Washington was red Monday morning after someone added a powdered dye to the water, officials said. “It could have been a prankster, but it’s filtered out already,” said Brian Hall, a spokesman for the National Park Service. Hall said the park service planned to drain the fountain Monday, clean it and refill it today. Pamela Mooring, a spokeswoman with D.C. Water, said no other nearby water reserves were affected. (TWP)

local Relations between the transit agency, workers reach a 40-year low TRANSPORTATION A long-simmering dispute between Metro and its largest union has publicly escalated into threats of a strike. Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689, which represents around 8,000 of Metro’s 12,500 active workers, overwhelmingly voted Sunday to authorize a strike. The vote opened up the possibility that

expressline

Metro workers could stage some sort of work stoppage or slowdown today during the All-Star Game. “The timing is definitely not a coincidence,” said Council member Jack Evans, who serves as chairman of the Metro board. “I hope cooler heads prevail.” Striking is forbidden under Metro’s bargaining agreement with the union, but even a brief interruption could cause commuting chaos. The transit system carries about 1 million people a day, and any shutdown would also potentially hinder the functioning of the federal government.

A union statement Monday gave no indication of when or if an actual strike would be considered, and blamed the current impasse on Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld — accusing him of “blaming his workers for the incompetence of him and his team.” Union members have been working without a contract since July 2016, with negotiations stalling over salaries, job cuts and the privatization of certain jobs. Binding arbitration of the dispute was ordered last fall, but both sides are still awaiting a ruling. The board of the Washington

Fight looms as Metro union OKs strike

A Metro union statement Monday gave no indication of when or if an actual strike would be considered.

Metro Area Transit Authority issued a response Monday afternoon, saying that the transit network faces chronic funding problems that must be addressed. “We must find solutions together by continuing to talk and listen,” the statement said. “The collective bargaining process is the appropriate and legal path to finding solutions.” Forty years have passed since the last Metro workers’ strike, in 1978 — a weeklong strike without union leadership authorization that disrupted commutes across the region. Police search for motive in window salesman’s killing

Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine and Republican challenger Corey Stewart have accepted invitations to participate in Virginia’s oldest and most widely broadcast televised debate this fall. “The People’s Debate” will be held on Oct. 2 in the studio of WCVE-TV — Virginia Public Television — in collaboration with WTVR-CBS6. The media partners will distribute the debate to broadcasters statewide so the forum will be available to voters across Virginia. The debate will be sponsored by AARP Virginia, which has sponsored the forum for gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races for more than a decade. (AP)

Gov. Larry Hogan announced new initiatives Monday aimed at making college more affordable and easing student debt. Hogan said he will again introduce legislation that would allow Maryland residents to deduct 100 percent of the interest paid on their student loans from their income tax return. He also wants to expand the Maryland Community College Promise Scholarship Program to include fouryear Maryland public institutions. Hogan also announced that the administration will double the deduction for families participating in Maryland 529 savings plans from $2,500 to $5,000. (AP)

The deadly assault took place at Windows Universe, a second-store sales office, late in the morning. Police have not commented on a possible motive or any connection between the two men. Jackson’s family said they do not know if he knew the suspect. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Asylum criteria tightened IMMIGRATION Patricia Aragon told the U.S. asylum officer at her recent case assessment that she was fleeing her native Honduras because she had been robbed and raped by a gang member who threatened to kill her and her 9-year-old daughter if she went to the police. Until recently, the 41-year-old seamstress from San Pedro Sula would have had a good chance of clearing that first hurdle in the asylum process due to a “credible fear” for her safety, but she didn’t. The officer said the Honduran government wasn’t to blame for what happened to Aragon and recommended that she not get asylum, meaning she’ll likely be sent home. “The U.S. has always been characterized as a humanitarian country,” Aragon said through tears at Port Isabel, a remote immigration detention center near Los Fresnos, Texas. “My experience has been very difficult.” As part of the Trump administration’s broader crackdown on immigration, Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently tightened the restrictions on the types of

Judge temporarily halts deportation of families A federal judge on Monday ordered a temporary halt to deportations of immigrant families reunited after being separated at the border, as the Trump administration races to meet a July 26 deadline for reuniting parents and children. cases that can qualify someone for asylum, making it harder for Central Americans who say they’re fleeing the threat of gangs, drug smugglers or domestic violence to pass even the first hurdle for securing U.S. protection. After complaining that the asylum system had become “overloaded with fake claims,” Sessions last month set new case precedent by reversing the granting of asylum to a woman with the initials A.B., a Salvadoran who fled more than a decade of domestic abuse. “Generally, claims by aliens pertaining to domestic violence

or gang violence perpetrated by non-governmental actors will not qualify for asylum,” the attorney general wrote. “Migrants know they can exploit a broken system to enter the U.S., avoid removal, and remain in the country,” said Michael Bars, a spokesman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, in a statement. Immigration lawyers say that’s meant more asylum seekers are failing interviews with USCIS to establish credible fear of harm. They also say that immigration judges, who work for the Justice Department, are overwhelmingly signing off on those recommendations during appeals, ending what could have been a years-long asylum process. “This is a direct, manipulated attack on the asylum process,” said Sofia Casini of the Austin nonprofit Grassroots Leadership, which has been working with immigrant women who were separated from their kids. Casini said that of the roughly 35 mothers separated from their children that her group worked with, more than a third failed their credible fear interviews, which she said is about twice the failure rate from before the new restrictions took effect. Russian national charged with acting as agent COURTS A Russian national with alleged ties to a top Russian official was charged in federal court on Monday with conspiracy to act as an agent of the Russian Federation, and was ordered held without bond. Maria Butina, 29, was arrested Sunday in D.C. and made her first appearance in U.S. District Court. Her attorney, Robert Neil Driscoll, said Butina’s residence was searched by the FBI in April, that she had testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee, and that “we have been offering to cooperate with the government the entire time.” Butina is accused of developing relationships with U.S. politicians and a “gun rights organization,” none of which are named. FBI Special Agent Kevin Helson wrote that Butina was attempting to “establish a ‘back channel’ communication” for Russian officials. The affidavit contains apparent communications on Twitter between Butina and the unnamed Russian official. “Your political star has risen in the sky,” the official told Butina. Butina, who founded a Russian gun rights group, attended the National Prayer Breakfast in 2017, as well as a series of NRA events and Trump campaign events. Driscoll said Butina was earning a master’s degree in international relations from American University and that she was just networking. TOM JACKMAN AND ROSALIND S. HELDERMAN (TWP)

nation+world Trump administration launches 5 WTO cases for retaliatory taxes BUSINESS The Trump administration on Monday brought cases against China, the European Union, Canada, Mexico and Turkey at the World Trade Organization for retaliating against American tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. The U.S. has imposed tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum on the grounds that the imported metals pose a

threat to U.S. national security. China, the EU, Canada, Mexico and Turkey have counterpunched with taxes on more than $24 billion worth of U.S. exports. U.S. Trade Rep. REACTIONS

Republicans criticize Trump over summit

President casts doubt on U.S. intelligence after Putin gives ‘powerful’ denial of interference

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.: “The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally,” Ryan said. He added that Russia “remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals.”

PABLO MARTINEZ MONSIVAIS (AP)

HELSINKI President Trump on Monday refused to support the collective conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin had given him an “extremely strong and powerful” denial during their private talks. Trump would not challenge Putin’s claim at their Helsinki summit that the Russian government played no role in trying to sabotage the U.S. election, even after the Justice Department indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers last Friday for hacking Democratic emails as part of a broad subterfuge operation to help Trump win the election. Trump went on to condemn the expansive federal investigation of Russian interference as “a disaster for our country” and “a total witch hunt,” arguing the probe, along with “foolish” U.S. policies, had severely impaired relations between the two countries. Trump’s warm embrace of Putin throughout a 46-minute news conference marked an extraordinary capstone to the first formal summit between the current leaders of the world’s nuclear superpowers, sparking trepidation and horror in Washington. The gathering turned into an unalloyed triumph for the Russian president. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called the summit “fabulous” and “better than super,” according to Russian news agencies. Trump and Putin spent their first two hours speaking alone, joined only by their interpreters. After emerging from the tete-atete with the former KGB agent

— who was trained in psychological manipulation and has two decades of experience negotiating with American presidents — Trump appeared to discount the findings of his own intelligence agencies about Russia’s behavior. Trump shrunk from confrontation when an Associated Press reporter asked whether he believes U.S. intelligence officials or Putin. “They said they think it’s Russia,” Trump replied, referencing intelligence officials. “I have President Putin; he just said it’s not Russia.” Trump added, “I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be. … I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.” Trump declined an invitation by the AP reporter to warn Putin to never again to interfere in a U.S. election and insisted there had been no coordination between

his campaign and Moscow, using as his argument that he had no relationship with Putin at the time. “I didn’t know the president,” Trump said. “There was nobody to collude with. There was no collusion with the campaign.” Putin confirmed that he indeed wanted Trump to defeat Clinton “because he talked about normalizing relations” between

Russia and the U.S. Putin also suggested what Trump described as an “interesting idea” — that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators could come to Russia and help question the dozen Russian suspects, as long as Russians could do the same of U.S. intelligence agents whom Moscow suspects of carrying out crimes on Russian soil. Trump’s failure to confront Putin drew stern rebukes from leaders of both political parties in Washington and left the American national security establishment alarmed and dismayed. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats responded by stating that the intelligence assessment of Russia’s “ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy” has been clear and has been presented to Trump in an unvarnished and objective fashion. PHILIP RUCKER, ANTON TROIANOVSKI AND SEUNG MIN KIM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz: “I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression,” Flake tweeted. “This is shameful.” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.: The summit was as “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory,” McCain said. “… The damage inflicted by President Trump’s naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake.” Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine: Trump’s remarks “demonstrate his continued refusal to accept the unanimous conclusions of U.S. intelligence leaders and the bipartisan findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee,” she said. Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb.: It was “bizarre” and “flat-out wrong” for Trump to suggest that both the U.S. and Russia are to blame for the deteriorated state of the two countries’ relationship, Sasse said. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.: The summit was a “missed opportunity by President Trump to firmly hold Russia accountable for 2016 meddling and deliver a strong warning regarding future elections,” Graham said.

nation+world Chicago police urged to show four bodycams of black man being shot CHICAGO An activist who has pushed for more police transparency said Monday that he’s asked Chicago police for the body camera footage from all four officers at the scene where one of them fatally shot a black man over the weekend. William Calloway said a 51-second video released by police showing the view from one officer’s body camera does not

answer key questions, starting with the reasons the officers approached 37-year-old Harith Augustus on Saturday just before he was shot. Calloway also said that the police’s explanation that the Augustus was “exhibiting characteristics of an armed person” does not justify stopping someone in a city and state where it is legal to carry a concealed weapon. Calloway was instrumental in a legal battle that led a judge in 2015 to order the release of dashcam video showing the 2014 shooting of teen Laquan McDonald. Police Superintendent Eddie

Johnson said Sunday that detectives have found no documentation that Augustus had a concealed carry permit, but Calloway said there is no way officers at the scene could have known that when they approached him. The video did not include sound. It shows one officer trying to grab the arm of Augustus, who spins and runs away with a holstered gun on his hip. “He was having a civil conversation with the black cop at first so we need to know what he and that officer were saying,” he said. ALL-STAR GAME | 8 TONIGHT, FOX

Scherzer fueled by daily grind MLB Rick Kirby was the basketball coach at Parkway Central High in Chesterfield, Mo., for more than 20 years, one of those defense-first types, the gritty kind who makes kids do things right. Of all the players Kirby coached, his most unlikely legacy might lie in one 6-foot-something forward who fell head over heels for the grind. That kid would risk any blow from an elbow for a chance to throw his own. He loved the chase, even if he didn’t have the most natural talent. Max Scherzer always had an affinity for scratching and clawing. “I loved the intensity of it,” Scherzer said years later in the Nationals’ clubhouse, where four years into his tenure, he is the heart of the team. “I loved the physical demands of it, the conditioning, the scouting of it.” Starting pitchers, as a genre, do not have a reputation for scrappiness. Scherzer, who will start his third All-Star Game tonight, wouldn’t be here without it. His competitiveness, Scherzer says, comes from his days spent jostling bigger forwards in the paint. But maybe he isn’t telling us everything. He never really does. He can’t, because the other guy might read it in the papers and know what’s coming. Scherzer never banks on the likelihood that the other guy

doesn’t think like he does. “He has a very, very powerful brain. I don’t know if that’s the right way to say it,” said Tony Vitello, who coached Scherzer at Missouri. “The guy’s got a great arm, but the best weapon he has is that brain.” That brain — and its incomparable wiring — explains how an earnest Midwestern kid became a player who some would say is the most accomplished righthanded pitcher of his era. Scherzer was never a can’tmiss talent. Mediocrity never disappointed him, either. It motivated him, over and over, until he had all but eradicated it. Now he is one of six pitchers to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues, one of 10 to win three. He just might have a case to be NL MVP. He almost certainly has one for the Hall of Fame. Energy was never the problem for Scherzer, who used to try so hard on every pitch that his hat would fall off as he whipped his head during his follow-through. Mention “the head whip” to anyone who has scouted him over the years, and they will know exactly what you mean. The Missouri coaching staff tried to help him, teaching him balance, to stay back through his delivery, to stop leaping at hitters. He got a chance as a freshman and lost it. After the Tigers

Home Run Derby ended after Express’ deadline Monday

Making his third All-Star Game start tonight, the Nats ace builds on Hall of Fame résumé

got blown out one day, Scherzer stopped Vitello in the dugout. “I want to know why I didn’t pitch in that game,” Scherzer said. “He was ready to fight me,” Vitello said. “He’s never lost that spirit.” “I didn’t pitch the last 50 days of that season,” Scherzer recalled, voice low, teeth gritted, still haunted by the notion. He spent those 50 days working out and doing long toss, and he gained a few miles per hour on his fastball. He modified a drill the coaching staff gave him, then he spent frigid winter hours in an indoor facility getting as many repetitions as he could. When he came back as a sophomore, he pitched to a 1.86 ERA in 16 starts and struck out 131 batters in 1061/3 innings. “I thought, ‘I’m not just going to

flame out here,’ ” Scherzer said. “ ‘I’m here to pitch and succeed.’ ” All these years later, at age 33, Scherzer is a bona fide freak. Even Clayton Kershaw hasn’t held up. Even Justin Verlander hit a rut. The statistics say Scherzer is better at this age than he’s ever been. None of that is normal. And no one saw that coming. When he was a fiery scouting director for the Diamondbacks in 2006, Mike Rizzo advocated for Arizona drafting Scherzer — whose delivery generated injury concerns — at No. 11 overall because of the pitcher’s “100 percent attack mode.” When, as general manager in Washington, Rizzo told the Lerner family he would bet his Nationals career on Scherzer, it was because of the ace’s commitment to growth. In 2015, Scherzer and the Nats

Nats’ Harper will bat sixth for NL in All-Star Game

agreed to the biggest deal in franchise history, a seven-year contract worth $210 million. Scherzer still hates that anyone wondered whether he would be able to hold up. He doesn’t run mile after mile between starts because he has something to prove. His career hasn’t blossomed because he needed other people’s criticism to drive him. But he remembers. As he headed down the tunnel for a light catch after talking about his draft year, Scherzer slowed to share one last thought about a right-hander who made just 21 starts in the bigs. “You know who the Rockies took [with the second pick] that year?” he said, still walking. “Greg Reynolds,” he said. “Heard of him?” CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

He closed a scorching first half with flair by hitting two doubles and a homer, knocking in six runs and scoring four more during a threegame sweep at San Diego. The 25-year-old will make his first AllStar appearance after hitting .292 with 19 homers and 72 RBIs — the most in the NL.

His list of accomplishments at age 27 is simply stunning. In his first five seasons, Arenado has won five Gold Glove awards, had two years of 40-plus homers and three of at least 130 RBIs. He’s now in his fourth straight All-Star Game after hitting .312 with 23 homers for middling Colorado.

The first baseman, 30, is an All-Star for the sixth straight season. Over the past five, he’s averaged 30 homers, 104 RBIs and a 101 runs scored. This year, the 30-year-old is hitting .281 with 21 homers and 52 RBIs but has struck out 110 times, most in the NL. He wasn’t voted a starter but will fill the DH spot.

A key piece of Atlanta’s early resurgence, Freeman, 28, is in his third All-Star Game after back-toback honors in 2013 and 2014. He’s is hitting .315 with 16 homers, a club-high 61 RBIs and a .938 OPS. He leads all first baseman in FanGraphs’ WAR (3.7) and has played in all of Atlanta’s 94 games.

Kemp’s career has come full circle. L.A. brought him back from Atlanta last winter in a trade that was a way for the Dodgers to shed some bloated contracts. But Kemp is playing his best ball since All-Star years with L.A. in 2011 and 2012. The 33-year-old is hitting .310 with 15 homers and 60 RBIs.

The District’s homegrown All-Star leads the NL with 78 walks — only Mike Trout has more in the majors. Harper, 25, is also tied for the second-most homers in the NL with 23. His .214 batting average in his final year before entering free agency, however, is a source of contention in D.C.

He’ll appear in his first career All-Star Game at the ripe old age of 34. A career .289 hitter for the Orioles and Braves, Markakis has hit .323 so far in his fourth season with Atlanta. His 120 hits are the most in the NL, and his 29 doubles are tied for the league lead with teammate Ozzie Albies.

After making his first All-Star Game in 2015, he’s back despite ranking third among NL shortstops in FanGraphs’ WAR, behind Colorado’s Trevor Story and Washington’s Trea Turner. Crawford, 31, is hitting .292 with 10 homers and coming off three straight Gold Glove seasons.

Earning his first All-Star selection in his second full season in the majors, the 26-year-old leads all major league catchers in FanGraphs’ Wins Above Replacement (2.5). Among backstops, his .279 batting average is behind only Wilson Ramos and Buster Posey.

He was an easy choice to start in his home park given that he has 12 wins, a 2.41 ERA and an NL-high 182 strikeouts. Manager Dave Roberts, who will give Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom the ball second, said the setting was the tiebreaker. “It’s his city. It’s his ballpark,” Roberts said of Scherzer. (EXPRESS/AP)

The best record in the majors resides in Boston (68-30), and Betts is a big reason why. An All-Star for the third straight season, the 25-year-old is the first-half batting champion with a .359 average. His OPS of 1.139 is the best in the bigs. With 23 homers, he’s one shy of matching his total from last year.

The reigning AL MVP is just 5 feet 6, but he might have the quickest hands in the majors. Batting .332, Altuve, 28, is right behind Betts and will certainly be in the mix to win his fourth batting title. The 2017 World Series champion is an All-Star for the fifth straight season, and sixth time overall.

Batting .310 with 25 homers, 50 RBIs and an MLB-high 6.6 WAR according to FanGraphs, the two-time AL MVP should be in the mix for a third trophy. Earning his seventh straight All-Star selection, Trout, 26, has the most walks (84), which helps explain his big leaguebest .454 on-base percentage.

The 30-year-old is making a big impression during his first year in Boston. He’s tied for the major league lead in homers (29), and his 80 RBIs in 92 games are seven more than anyone else. This is just his second career All-Star nod despite hitting .305 over the past two years with Detroit and Arizona.

He’s followed up his first All-Star selection last year by hitting .302 and tying Martinez for the big-league lead in homers. After knocking in 83 runs last season, he’s already up to 70 RBIs. With 20 stolen bases, he’s already swiped three more than he did all last year. And his 57 walks are five better than his 2017 total.

With the 6-foot-7, 282-pound slugger in a lineup that now features Giancarlo Stanton, it’s no wonder the Yankees have hit 27 more homers than any other team. After winning AL Rookie of the Year and blasting 52 long balls last season, Judge is hitting .276 this year with 25 homers and 60 RBIs.

Move over Bryce Harper. Machado is looking like the biggest fish on the 2019 free agent market. And where he winds up before the July 31 trade deadline is one of the biggest stories in the sport. Machado, 26, has never hit .300 for a full season. The fourth-time All-Star is hitting .315 with 24 homers and 65 RBIs.

The 2014 AL Rookie of the Year is back in the All-Star Game after a three-year drought. In his first four seasons, he averaged 31 homers and 102 RBIs per year. The 31-year-old from Cuba has hit .290 or better in every year of his career, but he enters this year’s showcase batting .253 with 13 homers.

With his sixth straight All-Star selection, the former World Series MVP gets to take the field in place of injured starter Wilson Ramos. Perez, 28, has struggled with a .221 average, but his 41 RBIs and 13 homers have him near the pace he needs to reach his normal numbers. He had 27 jacks and 80 RBIs in 2017.

The lanky 6-foot-6 ace will become the third player to start in three consecutive All-Star Games — one with the White Sox and two with the Red Sox — following Lefty Gomez and Robin Roberts. Scherzer started last year, too. The last time two pitchers faced off in consecutive All-Star Games was 1939-40. (EXPRESS/AP)

Bell and Steelers can’t agree to long-term deal

Spieth returns jug and hopes to win it back

Le’Veon Bell has averaged 128.9 yards from scrimmage per game over his five years with the Steelers, the highest since the NFL/AFL merger in 1970.

he told ESPN then. None of the other three players who had received the franchise tag from their teams — Lions pass rusher Ezekiel Ansah, Rams defensive back Lamarcus Joyner and Cowboys pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence — reached long-term contract agreements before Monday’s deadline, meaning all three will play out the 2018 seasons on the franchise tag before becoming unrestricted free agents in 2019 (unless their teams choose to tag them again). The 26-year-old Bell has averaged 128.9 yards from scrimmage per game over his career, the highest number since the

Jordan Spieth was expecting a low-key transaction when he pulled into the parking lot in Carnoustie, Scotland, to bring back the silver claret jug. Instead, he was part of a ceremony with enough pomp to drive home the point. His reign as British Open champion was over. “It’s the coolest trophy that our sport has to offer,” Spieth said. “So having to return that was certainly difficult.” Since winning golf’s oldest trophy — awarded since 1873 — last year at Royal Birkdale, Spieth hasn’t won. NFL/AFL merger in 1970. He has at least 75 receptions in three of his five NFL seasons. Bell also led the NFL last season with 321 carries. Basically, he never leaves the field when Pittsburgh has the ball, yet he’s only averaged slightly more than $5 million per season in salary. The Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott, meanwhile, has earned nearly $18 million over the first two years of his career. The Rams’ Todd Gurley will average nearly $6 million over his first four seasons. Both were first-round draft picks; Bell was not, a fact that has hindered his earning potential.

NFL The Pittsburgh Steelers and running back Le’Veon Bell had until 4 p.m. Monday to work out a new contract. But the deadline came and went, and so Bell will play the season under his franchisetagged salary of about $14 million, and then almost certainly will become an unrestricted free agent entering the 2019 season. Soon after the deadline passed, Bell posted a statement to Twitter that struck a conciliatory tone toward fans, saying he had hoped to reach an agreement to keep him with the Steelers long term, but that “the NFL is a hard business at times.” He added, “trust me, 2018 will be my best season to date.” That sentiment stood in contrast to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter earlier in the day. During an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio, Schefter said: “I think it’s possible Le’Veon Bell sits out the first half of the year if he doesn’t get a long-term deal done. The goal at that point would be to hit 2019 free agency healthy, not rack up another 400 touches.” Bell himself hinted at such a move in March, two months after he said he would contemplate retirement if forced to play a second consecutive season under the tag. “I just have to decide if I’m going to play when the time comes, comes,”

Slow the aging process You know those people — the ones who are older than you but act younger? They embody the phrase “70 is the new 50,” or even 30. These folks may have A+ genetics, but eating nutritious foods, managing stress and making smart lifestyle choices can also slow the

Take a walk on Earth’s grassy side

aging process. Graceful aging isn’t about avoiding wrinkles and gray hair; the ultimate goal is to maintain brain alertness, preserve

THINKSTOCK

energy levels and prevent disease. Let’s dig into how to make these things happen. CASEY SEIDENBERG (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Brain elasticity

Muscle mass

Gut and immune health

Balanced blood sugar

In her book “Younger,” Sara Gottfried, a women’s health specialist, explains that brain “neurons lose speed and flexibility as they age,” so we need to give our brain the food (and sleep) it needs to repair. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to support brain function and are found in salmon, sardines, mackerel and fish oil supplements. B vitamins have also been shown to improve cognitive function. Delara Tavakoli, an age management specialist, explains that stomach acidity declines with age, which means B vitamins are poorly absorbed. Eat plenty of B vitamins from eggs, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Lastly, water is essential. A hydrated brain is a healthier brain, and as we get older it becomes more difficult to absorb nutrients in the gut; a hydrated gut is a healthier gut, too.

Gottfried explains that by age 50, the average adult has lost 15 percent of their lean body mass, and the loss continues with age. The lower the body’s muscle mass, the higher the fat mass, which can fuel other chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. A significant loss of muscle also increases the likelihood of falling. Adequate protein throughout the day — from beans, nuts, seeds, wild fish, chicken and avocado — is key as the body ages. Weight-bearing exercises and yoga support muscle strength and flexibility. Numerous studies have shown that weight-bearing exercises can slow bone loss and even build new bone. Even just taking a brisk walk is a great way to start if you’re new to exercise. It can help build muscles and improve balance.

Tavakoli explains that 70 percent of the immune system lies beneath the gut lining, so it is important to keep the gut healthy to empower the immune system to fight disease. She advises patients to consume bone broth, as it is one of the most easily absorbable and nourishing foods, full of collagen, protein and minerals. She also suggests fermented foods for gut and immune health. Vitamin E, found in nuts and seeds, is a beneficial antioxidant that supports immune function, as is vitamin C, found in citrus, berries, leafy greens and tomatoes. In addition, as we age, we are more at risk for vitamin D deficiency because we may spend less time in the sun and also have less capacity to synthesize vitamin D through the skin. Vitamin D boosts the immune system and supports bone and heart health.

In her book, Gottfried describes how imbalanced blood sugar causes dips in energy and mood, cravings for sugar and carbohydrates, interrupted sleep and faster aging. Imbalanced blood sugar is also a precursor to diabetes, which is linked to many other diseases. Avoid processed foods and sugars and wait a few hours between meals to allow blood sugar to balance. Fiber, found in fruits and vegetables, also helps to balance blood sugar. Healthy fats build healthy hormones, while too much sugar, too little sleep and many of the chemicals in our environment contribute to imbalanced hormones, which contribute to the aging process. Tavakoli affirms that eating healthy fats such as salmon and avocados can help with hormone health.

Could walking barefoot in the grass, also called grounding, be good for you? The idea is that humans evolved in direct contact with the Earth’s subtle electric charge, but have lost that sustained connection because of inventions such as buildings and shoes with insulated synthetic soles. Advocates of grounding say this disconnect might be contributing to the chronic diseases that are particularly prevalent in industrialized societies. There is actually some science behind the idea. Research has shown that barefoot contact with the earth can produce nearly instant changes in a variety of physiological measures, helping improve sleep, reduce pain, decrease muscle tension and lower stress. Since being outdoors is definitely good for you, it probably wouldn’t hurt to try it and see if you notice any benefits. CARRIE DENNETT (TWP)

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Leave my self out of your selfies Q. Can you please, please, please tell people that not everyone likes to have their picture taken? I have certain friends that every time we do anything at all, they want to take selfies of all of us. I do not like the way I look right now (weight gain and skin issues — I’ll get over it) and do not want to be in photos, let alone plastered over social media. But they push me and make a big deal when I decline. Consider this my public service announcement. GRUMPY OK, consider your public service done, but I’m not going to end it without giving a little advice (occupational hazard). If they keep making a big deal when you decline, I vote for a larger conversation at a different time altogether. You need not unload a therapy session’s worth of details about your feelings about how you look, if

you don’t want to. But you can try to get the point across that this makes you uncomfortable and that you’d prefer it not happen anymore. No one deserves to have such a simple but meaningful request repeatedly steamrolled by people they consider friends. Hey, if it’s less annoying, could you even become the photographer?

with my alcoholic mother, who left the family when I was a teen. I am in my 30s and with a woman I think about spending my life with. My sister made a comment that my girlfriend reminded her of our mother. She’s never explained how or why. It worries me to think I would be repeating the pattern I grew up with. BOTHERED, VA You’re giving your sister too much power here. But let’s assume she really meant her comment. (Which isn’t a given; perhaps it was a frustrated dig that revealed her own unrelated issues, or just an acknowledgment that your mother and girlfriend both rocked mid-length bangs.) You have to figure out what this means for you. So let’s say there are similarities between your girlfriend and your mom. What would those be? How would they affect you? How can they be managed, diminished or even embraced? What have you learned from your relationship with your mother? How can you be the person you want to be in this current relationship? These all must be answered. And if you need help, I’d recommend a therapist over a Sister’s Comment Decoder Ring. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Andrea is a licensed clinical psychologist and hosts a live chat Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at washingtonpost.com. Your questions may be used in the chats.

AFRICAN STUDY A study at NIH is recruiting healthy black African men and women to understand diabetes and heart disease risk in Africans.

FREEFORM AND TV LAND

Were You Born In Africa? Must Be: • Born in Africa • 18-65 years old • Requires 3 visits • Compensation provided • Refer to study # 99-DK-0002

“The Bold Type,” above, and “Younger” focus on career-oriented women.

Working through their love and lives ‘The Bold Type’ and ‘Younger’ emphasize careers over romance TELEVISION In the first episode of “The Bold Type’s” second season, a fashion assistant decides to break up with her boyfriend, an older man who works for the board overseeing the Cosmopolitan-esque fashion magazine where she works. “It’s a gamble, but I am putting my money down on my career,” she tells him. “And believing that love will fall into place.” There’s something refreshing about seeing the women on this earnest Freeform series, about the rising staffers at fictional Scarlet magazine, place more emphasis on their careers than their romantic relationships. It’s similar to what is happening on “Younger,” a TV Land dramedy that stars Sutton Foster as Liza, a 40-something woman posing as a 20-something book editor. On “Younger,” Liza’s inner circle features career-focused women of various ages, including her longtime best friend, Maggie (Debi Mazar), an artist; Diana (Miriam Shor), the senior

editor to whom Liza has proved herself indispensable; and Kelsey (Hilary Duff), the colleague with whom Liza has launched an imprint dubbed Millennial. The show portrays the ups and downs of their careers as much, if not more, than it focuses on their (compelling) dating lives. “The Bold Type,” meanwhile, follows three friends — Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee) and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) — who work their way up the various ranks at Scarlet magazine. But the true heart of the show is their friendship, which often involves the trio counseling one another on how to get the careers they want. Although “The Bold Type” and “Younger” have comedic elements, they draw more inspiration from Carrie Bradshaw than Liz Lemon or Leslie Knope. Both series stand out because dating takes a back seat to the 9-to-5 grind. Yes, “Sex and the City” was built around the career of its heroine, but work felt too optional in Carrie’s universe. It is central in “The Bold Type” and “Younger” in a way that it isn’t in most romantic TV dramas — particularly those about young women.

The annual gathering has been plagued by harassment concerns CONVENTIONS Comic-Con, the annual gathering of over 130,000 geek culture savants, has already been changed by the #MeToo and Time’s Up era, with convention mainstay Chris Hardwick stepping aside due to recent sexual misconduct allegations. But questions remain about its atmosphere ahead of the event, which kicks off Wednesday night in San Diego.

The convention has always been a home for comic book and genre enthusiasts, but it’s also been a place rife with harassment of women and others, whether it’s cosplayers, general attendees or so-called “booth babes” hawking merchandise. “I don’t think any convention has historically been a safe or inviting space for women,” says Cher Martinetti, managing editor of Syfy Wire’s Fangrrls site. Comic-Con has a code of conduct that representatives say was “created to serve as a comprehensive measure that makes

MUSIC The year of Cardi B continues — this time with 10 MTV Video Music Award nominations. MTV announced Monday that the white-hot rapper is the most nominated act at this year’s show, which returns to New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Aug. 20. Five of Cardi B’s nominations are thanks to her collaboration with Bruno Mars on the upbeat anthem “Finesse (Remix).” The song’s video will compete for video of the year along with Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” Drake’s “God’s Plan,” Beyonce and JAY-Z’s “Apes---,” Camila Cabello’s “Havana” and Ariana Grande’s “No Tears Left to Cry.” Beyonce and JAY-Z — who recently released a collaborative album as the Carters — are nominated for eight awards. “This Is America,” which tackles racism and gun violence, earned Gambino — the rap alter ego for actor Donald Glover — seven nominations. Drake also scored seven nods. Mars, who has six nominations, is up for artist of the year alongside Cardi B, Drake, Post Malone, Cabello and Grande. Taylor Swift was shut out of the major categories, but did nab three nominations for technical awards. Justin Timberlake, whose “Man of the Woods” album has underperformed, earned just two nominations. MESFIN FEKADU (AP)

CANCER (June 21-July 22) A little idea that you almost ignored is likely to give way to one that is much bigger, and its potential knows no bounds. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You don’t want to do anything but your very best today, especially where family members are concerned. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A puzzle waits to be solved, but perhaps you’re not the one to solve it — at least not yet. Soon you will have an epiphany. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may be trying to do too much all at once today; take things apart, look at their components, and focus on one small task at a time. MONDAY’S SOLUTION

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may

not have much time to devote to a certain problem today, so you’ll want to attack it as soon as possible upon waking. Don’t wait.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) It’s very important for you to understand what makes someone else tick, as he or she is an important part of your inner world. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may be interpreting someone else’s words or deeds in a very unusual way — which is resulting, of course, in a lack of synchronization.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re eager to make changes to your primary environment — either your home or office. Even a slight adjustment yields a big payoff.

TODAY: Temperatures quickly shoot up to near 90 through midday but then showers and thunderstorms become likely. Heavy rainfall is possible with these storms and even the possibility of some localized flooding. Fingers crossed, we may be able to get the bulk of the rain out of here in time for the All-Star Game.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) A personal mystery may actually be solved today — and you must take care not to make things more difficult in its aftermath. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You can approach a certain “stalled” situation in a more creative way. Others are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Tim Tebow confirmed this past weekend that he is dating 2017 Miss Universe winner Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters. “She is a really special girl, and I am very lucky and blessed for her coming into my life,” Tebow told ESPN. “I am usually very private with these things, but I am very thankful.” Romance rumors began brewing when Tebow, 30, and Nel-Peters, 23, posed together for an Instagram photo posted by Tebow’s sister Katie on July 10. Tebow, a former NFL quarterback now playing in the New York Mets’ minor league system, previously dated 2012 Miss Universe Olivia Culpo. (EXPRESS)
