A robbery suspect used a stolen cellphone to snap a selfie, giving Shreveport, La., police his identity. The Shreveport Times reported the victim of a July 10 robbery told police he was held up at gunpoint, surrendering cash and two cellphones. Three days later, the victim told police the suspect had taken photos of himself that had uploaded to the victim’s cloud. The photos were released to the public, and a tipster was able to identify the suspect. (AP)

Firefighters in Austin, Texas, were twice called to handle an unexpected side effect of the state’s heat wave: spontaneous tortilla chip combustion. “The factory in question was trying out a new way to handle the waste from the chips that, suffice it to say, didn’t work out so well,” the Austin Fire Department wrote Wednesday on Facebook. And it happened again, at the same chip factory, three days later, the fire department added. (EXPRESS)

D.C. to get historic Starbucks BUSINESS Starbucks has more than 8,000 stores nationwide. One of them will soon be run entirely in American Sign Language. Starbucks’ first signing store in the United States will hire 20 to 25 deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing people with the requirement that they be proficient in American Sign Language. Starbucks says the store — set to open in Washington in October — will boost hiring and accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing employees and customers alike. “This is a historic moment in Starbucks’ ongoing journey to connect with the deaf and hard of hearing community, hire and engage deaf and hard-of-hearing partners, and continue to find ways to be more inclusive, accessible and welcoming to all,” said Rossann Williams, Starbucks’ executive vice president of U.S. retail. The store will open at 6th & H streets near Gallaudet University, the world’s only university designed for deaf and

The store mirrors Starbucks’s first signing store, which opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2016. In a Starbucks video announcing the U.S. signing store, a former employee named Kevin, who is blind and deaf and worked as a consultant on the D.C. signing store, said that a group of Starbucks employees went to Malaysia in 2017 to learn how to model that store in the U.S. Howard Rosenblum, chief executive of the National Association of the Deaf, said the store is one way for businesses such as Starbucks to bring people together so they can learn how to communicate with one another, whether they are deaf or hearing. “Starbucks’ first signing store can show other corporations that including deaf people is good for business and can increase its market share,” Rosenblum said. “Hiring deaf people or people with disability should not be viewed as a charity but as a way to improve a corporation’s reach across different segments of the market.” RACHEL SIEGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Can Redskins fans tackle a 3-lb. burrito? Wednesday, at the “Taste of FedEx Field,” the Redskins gave media members and a few hundred season ticket members a sneak peek at what’s new at the stadium this season. At 3 pounds, the burrito includes beef, chicken and a half-smoke rolled with Spanish rice, lettuce, tomato, avocado and black beans in a flour tortilla. “It’s enough to feed two people,” said Anthony Lacerda, a chef for concessions company Levy. Candidates debate when they’ll debate

Religious and judicial leaders are asking D.C.’s alcohol board to force the Trump hotel to defend its liquor license.

Could the Trump hotel lose its liquor license? Groups plan to bring up president’s character during renewal process

THE DISTRICT Last week, an Advisory Neighborhood Commission voted unanimously to support a petition that seeks to revoke the Trump International Hotel’s liquor license on the grounds that its owner — you know, the president of the U.S. — is not of “good character.” The ANC is not even the one where the luxury hotel is located. During its July 11 meeting, the commissioners of ANC 4C — which represents Columbia Heights and other neighborhoods — voted 8 to 0 to support a complaint that looks to strip the hotel of its liquor license. In June, a

group of religious and judicial leaders petitioned the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to force the Trump hotel to justify why it should keep its alcohol permit when D.C. law states that license applicants must be of “good character and generally fit for the responsibilities of licensure.” Zach Teutsch introduced the resolution to his fellow ANC 4C commissioners. He says that it’s “correct and very important” that D.C. law requires liquor license applicants to be of good character. According to Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration spokesman Max Bluestein, anyone or any civic group can file a complaint against a licensee, at any time during the license’s period, but an ANC cannot file an official protest against a license

if the business is not located within 600 feet of its jurisdiction. What’s more, an official protest can be filed only when a liquor license is first being considered by the ABC board or when it’s up for renewal, which in the case of the Trump hotel will be in 2019. The complaint argues even though the president put his business holdings, including the hotel, into a trust, he is still the “true and actual” owner of the hotel and its liquor license. News reports have already noted that Trump can withdraw money from the trust. Trump, the complaint says, “is subject to the same good character requirement that applies to all other licensees. There is no statutory exception for the rich or the powerful.”

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s announcement this week that he would participate in two televised debates triggered a backlash from Democratic challenger Ben Jealous, whose campaign said it wanted more forums and to ensure the debates “reflect the diversity of the state.” Hogan’s campaign said the governor will participate in hour-long debates Sept. 17 and Sept. 24. But Jealous’ campaign said Thursday they have not settled on a debate schedule. Jealous’ campaign was concerned the dates were too far from the Nov. 6 election. A Hogan official said the Jealous campaign has had ample opportunity to engage over the debate schedule. (TWP)

After the stretch of three glorious days ends today, D.C.’s weather will take a serious turn for the worse this weekend and especially next week. An oppressively humid weather pattern, with tropical pedigree, sets up — one that could support very heavy rainfall and flooding at times. The soggy pattern may last for at least a week. It will not rain continuously, and some areas will be wetter than others. But the atmosphere will be so loaded with water that heavy, even extreme, rainfall will be possible. Deal made with family of Carol Glover, who died in smoke incident TRANSPORTATION Metro has reached an out-ofcourt settlement with the family of Carol Glover, the 61-year-old woman who died in January 2015 after smoke filled a tunnel near the L’Enfant Plaza station. According to recent court documents, U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan granted a request by Glover’s two adult sons to dismiss the lawsuit they filed against Metro more than three years ago. On Thursday, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel confirmed that the case was dismissed because Glover’s family agreed to a settlement offered by the transit agency. The terms of that settlement and the amount of money offered to the family by Metro are sealed from the public as part of the final legal agreement struck between the agency and family. In their original court filing in January 2015, Glover’s sons had sought $50 million in damages from Metro. In that filing, Glover’s family alleged that Metro had acted negligently in failing to repair and upgrade the infrastructure that caused the tunnel to fill with smoke in the first place and also for failing to quickly evacuate Glover and other passengers from the train. “As a direct and proximate

result of [Metro’s] negligence, Ms. Glover was trapped, helpless, in Train 302 for nearly forty-five minutes as it filled with smoke,” the Glovers’ attorneys wrote in that initial lawsuit. The fact that the Glover case has now been settled out of court — along with the cases brought by dozens of other victims — suggests that Metro is trying in earnest to avoid a civil trial, which probably would bring up new details and firsthand testimonies from the people and first responders who experienced the event. Court documents posted this week show that of the more than 100 cases filed against Metro by victims, only 18 are still active. The rest have been dismissed by a judge — almost all of them by plaintiffs’ requests, which suggests those, too, have been settled. MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Red Line Saturday-Sept. 3

BONNIE JO MOUNT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION The man with an important appointment to keep was incredulous at the news as he got off the Red Line at Metro’s Rhode Island Avenue station. Yeah, he’d heard the station, as well as the one at BrooklandCatholic University, will be closing on Saturday. “But it’s just for the weekend,” he said. “Right?” Wrong. “Labor Day? That’s a month and a half,” said the man, who didn’t want to give his name because of the nature of his appointment. “What are people supposed to do?” A lot of people are wondering just that. What’s clear is that the next 45 days are going to be a headache. As annoying as commuting may be now — whether you’re sweating it out in a “hot car” or trudging up a broken escalator — it’s going to be a lot worse for a lot of people for the rest of the summer. Workers will use the shutdown along the Red Line to tackle long-term structural problems on the platform at Rhode Island Avenue station, Metro’s oldest outdoor station. Those problems became glaringly apparent in September 2016, when the station was closed for several days after a chunk of ceiling concrete fell. But if the Red Line disruption isn’t enough of a late-summer headache, Metro also will undertake a rebuilding project on the Orange, Silver and Blue line tracks between McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations from Aug. 11 through 26, leading to an extended stretch of dreaded “single tracking” through much of the downtown core. Metro says crews will work around the clock during this time to rebuild the track along

the tightest curve in the entire system, installing new rails and fasteners and repairing the concrete pads that support the rails. Crews will work on each track for about a week at a time, so single-tracking can be maintained. Metro says the work is critical, and that it chose a time of the year when a lot of people are out of town and ridership is low. For those who remain behind to slog to work in the August heat, Metro’s best advice is to find some way to avoid the Orange, Blue and Silver lines. Critics object to Metro’s branding these projects as “capital improvements,” saying the work is needed now only because Metro let maintenance slide so badly. Indeed, Metro’s inspector general found that the 2016 collapse at Rhode Island Avenue could have been prevented. The part of the structure that failed hadn’t been inspected because it was in

No refunds allowed If you’re affected by Metro’s summer capital improvement projects, don’t expect a refund under its “Rush Hour Promise” program, which reimburses passengers whose rail or bus trips take significantly longer than expected. rider named Brenda complained after she got off a train at the Brookland station lugging two plastic bags of groceries. She worried that there were no signs in sight showing where free shuttles are going to stop like there were during the last shutdown. Some riders, like William Kurtz-El at Rhode Island station, shrugged that the work just has to get done. “The station needs work,” he said. “They better do it now, before someone gets hit by falling plaster or a beam or something.” He’ll just have to find another way, he said. But, like a lot of riders, he isn’t sure what his other way will be. The man with the important appointment also doesn’t know what he’ll do — just that he’ll have to figure it out to stay out of jail. “I better let my P.O. know,” he said as hurried off to his weekly check-in with his probation officer. Flint crisis prompts call for greater oversight

Watchdog report: EPA must better supervise state water programs

CARLOS OSORIO (AP)

HEALTH The Environmental Protection Agency must strengthen its oversight of state drinking water programs to avoid a repeat of what happened in Flint, Mich., an agency watchdog said in a report Thursday. Sluggish federal reaction meant residents were exposed to lead-tainted water for far too long. “While oversight authority is vital, its absence can contribute to a catastrophic situation,” EPA Inspector General Arthur A. Elkins said in releasing the findings, which stated, “while Flint residents were being exposed to lead in drinking water, the federal response was delayed, in part, because the EPA did not establish clear roles and responsibilities, risk assessment procedures, effective communication and proactive oversight tools.” The EPA was not alone in its failure to address the crisis that crippled the city of nearly 100,000 residents, including exposing thousands of young children to lead. In particular, state officials failed to implement proper treatments after Flint switched drinking water sources in early 2014, and for months ignored warnings from local residents about the deteriorating water quality. The EPA’s inspector general

found that the federal government deserved significant blame for not more quickly using its enforcement authority to make sure state and local officials were complying with the Safe Drinking Water Act, as well as with federal rules that mandate testing for lead. “EPA needs to learn from Flint and this report,” said Mona Hanna-Attisha, the Flint pediatrician whose research in late 2015 first documented dangerously high lead levels in children’s blood. “All of the EPA lead standards are grossly inadequate and need to be updated to respect the science of ‘no safe level’ of lead exposure.” In particular, the report found

the EPA’s Region 5 office, which oversaw Michigan, “did not manage its drinking water oversight program in a way that facilitated effective oversight and timely intervention,” and staffers in the region “lacked a sense of urgency.” In the report, the EPA’s inspector general offered nine recommendations, including putting in place controls to make sure states and localities are complying with lead testing regulations and properly treating water sources. He also urged the EPA to revise and improve the muchcriticized Lead and Copper Rule, which dictates how communities monitor for lead in drinking water. BRADY DENNIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Records show George and Violet McCallister bought the two-bedroom, three-bathroom splitlevel home in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles in 1973 for $61,000. Real estate agent Ernie Carswell told the Los Angeles Times that the interior layout does not resemble that featured on the show, which ran from 1969 to 1974, because interior scenes were shot in a studio. Carswell says the home has been updated and upgraded, but retains vintage touches of 1970s homes, like a rock-wall fireplace, wood-paneled walls and floral wallpaper. Figure skating medalist killed Olympian Denis Ten of Kazakhstan stabbed in dispute in home city

ALMATY, KAZAKHSTAN Olympic figure skating medalist Denis Ten was killed Thursday, and prosecutors in Kazakhstan said they were treating the case as murder. Ten was stabbed in the right thigh and lost a significant amount of blood after a dispute with people who allegedly tried to steal a mirror from his car in his home city of Almaty, Kazakh news agencies reported. Doctors in Almaty say the 25-year-old skater died in the hospital there. Born in Kazakhstan to a family of Korean descent, Ten won bronze at the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014, making him Kazakhstan’s first medalist in figure skating. Canadian skater Patrick Chan, who won silver in the same competition, said he was “honored and grateful to have shared the ice” with Ten. The International Skating Union said it was “deeply saddened” by news of Ten’s death. “His shining achievements brought glory to our country and helped popularize sport among young people,” Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

Denis Ten won the bronze medal for figure skating at the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014.

“Denis was not only an excellent athlete, whose talent was recognized and honored in many countries of the world, but also a remarkable personality and a true patriot of Kazakhstan.” Ten also won the Four Continents championships in 2015, and was a world championship silver medalist in 2013. Ten struggled with injuries in recent years and could manage only 27th at the Pyeongchang Olympics in February. Ten hadn’t formally retired from skating, but in recent months he’d often spoken of his studies in economics and his plans to write a movie script. JAMES ELLINGWORTH (AP)

Austrian party wants registry for kosher, halal Jewish and Muslim organizations this week criticized the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPO), the ruling coalition party in the state of Lower Austria, over a proposal that would require Jews and Muslims to register with the government if they wanted to purchase kosher or halal meat. “This constitutes an attack on Jewish and Muslim life,” the Berlin-based American Jewish Committee wrote in a response. Austria’s FPO has had a number of Nazi scandals in recent years and has been accused of stirring anti-Semitic sentiments, but the right-wing populists consider themselves to be treated unfairly by their critics. “This is absolutely not about religion — it’s about animal protection,” Alexander Murlasits, an FPO spokesman, told The Washington Post on Thursday. At question is how the animals are killed. Kosher and halal techniques are meant to reduce their suffering, Jewish and Muslim advocates say. Critics doubt that those techniques are less painful than more widely used procedures. Under the proposal, Jews and Muslims would still be allowed to purchase kosher and halal food, but only if they can prove that they live in Lower Austria and are observant members of their religious communities. And sales would be restricted to a certain amount of meat per week. RICK NOACK

Putin gets invite to D.C. Intel chief says details of summit remain unknown as Trump plans second meeting Trump seeking to limit habitat protections

BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats on Thursday acknowledged that he did not know what took place in President Trump’s one-on-one meeting in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin, even as the White House announced plans to invite the Russian leader to Washington for a second meeting in the fall. “Well, you’re right. I don’t know what happened in that meeting,” Coats told NBC’s Andrea Mitchell in an interview at the Aspen Security Forum. He said that while it was Trump’s prerogative to decide how to conduct the meeting, he would have advised the president otherwise. “If he had asked me how that ought to be conducted, I would have suggested a different way,” Coats said. “But that’s not my role; that’s not my job.” Coats, who on Monday issued a statement standing by the U.S. intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election, also said that he would have liked to have seen Trump strike a different tone in his extraordinary 46-minute news conference with Putin. “Obviously, I wish that he’d made a different statement,” Coats said when asked about Trump’s remarks on Monday defending Putin. “But I think that now that has been clarified, based on his late reactions to this, and so I don’t think I want to go any further than that.” The statement from Coats came as the White House announced that Trump had asked National Security Adviser John Bolton to invite Putin to Washington in the fall. Trump earlier Thursday had said in a tweet that he looks forward to a second meeting with the Russian

president, without giving any further details. T r u mp told lawmakers this week he a nd Coats Putin had made “significant progress toward addressing” key issues. U.S. officials have offered few specifics on what was accomplished beyond what press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday called “the beginning of a dialogue with Russia.” The president’s longest encounter with Putin, a two-hourplus session, included no other officials or note-takers, just interpreters. In a speech Thursday to Russian diplomats in Moscow, Putin said the Helsinki summit had led to “useful agreements.” Now, he said, both U.S. jobs and European and Middle Eastern security hang in the balance as Trump’s U.S. opponents try to block the path to improving relations between Moscow and Washington.

Putin’s request rejected The White House says President Trump opposes a proposal floated by Russian President Vladimir Putin that would allow Russia to interview American officials in exchange for making Russian authorities indicted in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe available for questioning. The White House announced Trump’s opposition Thursday moments before the Senate voted 98 to 0 to approve a resolution telling the president not to honor Putin’s request, which would have exposed former U.S. ambassador Michael McFaul, among others, to Russian questioning. (TWP)

“We will see how things go, as some forces in America are trying to belittle and disavow the results of the Helsinki meeting,” Putin said. “We see that there are forces in the United States ready to sacrifice Russian-American relations for their own domestic political ambitions.” A d ay e a rl ier, Russi a’s

ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, told reporters in Moscow “important verbal agreements” were reached at the Helsinki meeting. That includes preservation of the New START and INF agreements, major bilateral armscontrol treaties whose futures have been in question, Antonov said. He also relayed Putin had made “specific and interesting proposals to Washington” on how the two countries could cooperate on Syria. In the U.S., the focus in the days since the summit has been on Trump’s views on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and the degree to which Russia remains a threat — as well as what was accomplished. Democratic lawmakers have pushed to subpoena the notes of the State Department interpreter who translated for Trump or compel her to testify. Republicans have blocked the move. ENVIRONMENT The Trump administration on Thursday proposed ending automatic protections for threatened animal and plant species and limiting habitat safeguards that are meant to shield recovering species from harm. Administration officials said the new rules would advance conservation by simplifying and improving how the landmark Endangered Species Act is used. The proposed changes include potential limits on the designation of “critical habitat” for imperiled plants and animals; an end to a regulatory provision that gives threatened plants and animals the same protections as species that are considered more endangered; and streamlining interagency consultations when federal government actions could jeopardize a species. Wildlife advocates and Democratic lawmakers said such moves would speed extinctions to advance what they call the administration’s anti-environment agenda. Species under consideration for protections are considered especially at risk, including the North American wolverine and the monarch butterfly, they said. “It essentially turns every listing of a species into a negotiation,” said Noah Greenwald with the Center for Biological Diversity. “They could decide that building in a species habitat or logging in trees where birds nest doesn’t constitute harm.” MATTHEW BROWN (AP)

Comcast drops Fox bid, paving way for Disney BUSINESS Comcast is dropping its bid for Fox’s entertainment businesses, paving the way for Disney to boost its upcoming streaming service by buying the studios behind “The Simpsons” and X-Men. Comcast can now focus on its pursuit of European pay-TV operator Sky, a deal that would give the Philadelphia-based cable and media company a larger presence outside the U.S. The moves come as the media landscape is shifting dramatically. Cable and telecom companies are buying content makers

to compete with popular streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon. Big media companies now want to control all aspects of TV shows and movies that people watch so they can gather valuable data on their customers, which they can then use to sell advertising. AT&T bought Time Warner last month for $81 billion and has already launched its own streaming service, called Watch TV, with Time Warner channels such as TBS and TNT, among other networks, for $15 a month. service in the works, and the addition of Fox’s movies and shows would help boost that offering. Comcast had been dueling with Disney for Twenty-First Century Fox, but Comcast said Thursday that it would not raise its $66 billion offer for Fox. The Walt Disney Co. had topped Comcast’s bid by offering $71 billion. The U.S. Department of Justice has approved Disney’s bid as long as Disney, which owns ESPN, sells Fox’s 22 regional sports networks. Fox shareholders are set to vote on Disney’s offer July 27. Deaths from liver disease up sharply in U.S. Deaths from liver disease have increased sharply in recent years in the U.S., according to a study published Wednesday in the British Medical Journal. Cirrhosis-related deaths increased by 65 percent from 1999 to 2016, and deaths from liver cancer doubled, the study said. The rise in death rates was driven predominantly by alcoholinduced disease, the report said. Over the past decade, people ages 25 to 34 had the highest increase in cirrhosis deaths — an average of 10.5 percent per year — of the demographic groups examined, researchers reported. The study suggests that a new generation is being afflicted “by alcohol misuse and its complications,” said lead author Elliot Tapper, a liver specialist at the University of Michigan. Researchers found that deaths for certain groups of people decreased between 1999 to 2008 — but rose sharply starting in 2009. They speculated that the 2008 economic crisis, which led to a rise in unemployment, might have been a factor. The study found that men were twice as likely to die from cirrhosis and nearly four times as likely to die from liver cancer as women. It also found that death rates for cirrhosis among whites, Native Americans and HispanicAmericans increased, while the death rates for Asian-Americans from both cirrhosis and liver cancer declined. SKIPPER’S STRUGGLE

Martinez still figuring out Nats’ bullpen

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Players to watch in camp The Redskins will open training camp on Thursday in Richmond, Va., with the hope of quickly incorporating new talent with maturing veterans to form a team that can return the franchise to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Washington’s offense is breaking in a new quarterback and betting on a rookie running back to win a starring role. The deep passing game needs improvement. On defense, the Redskins need to stop the run better and shore up

WASHINGTON POST, AP AND GETTY IMAGES

the secondary. The progression of the following five players will have the most impact on the upcoming season.

QB Alex Smith

RB Derrius Guice

WR Josh Doctson

DL Daron Payne

SS Montae Nicholson

Everything starts with the quarterback, and the Redskins traded for an older one who lacks deep arm strength. Smith, 34, is coming off a career-best year in Kansas City with 4,042 yards and 26 touchdowns with only five interceptions. The 2005 No. 1 overall pick has been steady for years but is now on his third team after San Francisco and Kansas City opted to go younger. Can Smith embrace another West Coast offense with less-than-stellar receivers? Can he find Paul Richardson down the field enough to stretch the defense? Does Smith, who is under contract through 2022, have gas left in the tank?

Forget about the draft-day whispers that caused Guice to drop out of the first round to No. 59 overall in the second. He has the makings of a steal. Guice looked sharp throughout offseason drills. At 224 pounds, he’s a battering ram with enough speed to get outside. And his hands seem good enough to be a reliable receiving option. But rookie seasons are often up and down. Guice’s biggest task will be to avoid hitting the rookie wall and prove he can hold on to the rock. Guice looks like he could become a key player in this offense, and a couple 100-yard games could solidify that.

It’s time for the 2016 first-rounder to prove himself or be sent packing next season. It’s hard to say which will happen for the receiver, though. Injured much of his first season, Doctson followed with an uneven 2017. Sure there were six TD catches, but he made only 35 receptions and had a memorable drop on a potential game-winning pass at Kansas City. The talent is there, and the Redskins are determined to let Doctson prove it with more opportunities. He needs to fight off defenders on 50/50 balls and produce in the red zone. If he gets to 50 catches and 8 TDs, his season will be a success.

The Redskins used their first-round pick on a defensive lineman from Alabama for the second straight year. Jonathan Allen, the No. 17 pick in 2017, played well before missing the last 11 games with a foot injury. Now Payne, the 13th overall pick, arrives to plug the middle. It would be nice if he was a little taller than 6 feet 3 to block quarterback’s sight lines, but the 319-pounder is a solid run-stopper. Opponents have run up the gut the last few years on the Redskins to set up deep play-action. If Payne catches on quickly, the revamped secondary will be spared from committing to run support.

The strong safety is the real question mark of the secondary. The fourthround pick missed eight games of his rookie season last year, including the final six with a concussion. But his overwhelming self-confidence has him determined not only to return as a swift tackler, but to become the leader of a secondary that includes chatterboxes D.J. Swearinger and Josh Norman. The Redskins need Nicholson to secure a position that has seen constant turnover. With his speed, vision and hard hitting, Nicholson could shut down the middle. But he has to remain healthy.

Nats’ Strasburg (shoulder inflammation) to make first start since June 8 on Friday vs. Braves (7:05, MASN2)

In his rookie year as an MLB manager, Dave Martinez’s handling of his pitching staff has become a concern for the Nationals, according to players and people familiar with the team. Relievers have said they believe heavy workloads sent Brandon Kintzler and Ryan Madson to the disabled list. Martinez’s reasoning for taxing his best bullpen arms was that the Nats had played an unusually high number of close games. Relievers were also upset about situations in which they were called to warm up but didn’t go in the game, burning a rest day and straining trust. Closer Sean Doolittle said that Martinez has been “more proactive” with communication, and “that’s helped.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Move to middle helps former winger increase impact for D.C. United

MLS Last August at RFK Stadium, Paul Arriola stood atop a podium in a news conference room cobbled out of an old batting cage and explained why a rising star for the U.S. national team would sign with a last-place MLS club. “Obviously getting a new stadium and slowly transitioning into that is something that’s going to be extremely special,” Arriola said. Eleven months later, as D.C. United christened Audi Field on Saturday, the spotlight shined brightest on Wayne Rooney, the newly signed English icon who immediately brought the club

an uptick in brand recognition. Rooney was the splashiest signing, but Arriola also represented a significant building block for the club, having arrived last summer in a $3 million move — then a team record — from Mexico’s Club Tijuana. On Saturday, with Rooney No. 9 jerseys dominating the stands, it was Arriola, 23, who stole the show, netting a pair of second-half goals in a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps. “A party with the three points was awesome,” Arriola said. “And for me to be able to be the DJ was even better.” Arriola took up his customary position on the right wing for D.C. last season. But after he began 2018 with just two assists over six matches, both the player and coaching staff sensed he wasn’t

Summer Safety Measures for Apartment Communities

The Villages at Morgan Metro 8251 Ridgefield Blvd. Landover, MD 20785 301-296-5833

Moving into an apartment this summer to a community you don’t know? Have the safety precaution list below in mind when being secure within your apartment.

Review Security

If your apartment does not have an alarm system, ask your landlord if you can install one. This is one of the best precautions you can take in any household.

Locks

After moving in, your apartment will probably have some sort of lock on the front door. Ask your landlord for a new lock; not a chain lock, but a deadbolt lock. If they won’t pay for it, you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket for this and will need a locksmith to get the job done. Having a deadbolt in your apartment will insure no one else has your key and will secure you and your apartment safety. Remember- never leave your apartment without locking all the doors, and setting the alarm if you have one! Also, make sure your windows are always locked within your apartment, even if you aren’t home.

Balcony/Deck

If you have a balcony or deck, do not use it for storage. That is a ȴre ha]ard.

Security Information

Always know your local emergency information in case of break-ins or unusual activity.

Community

Get to know the people in your building or complex, and of course, your landlord. Familiar faces will give you reassurance and will help you recogni]e suspicious people that are not part of your community. Getting to know your landlord will help you understand the rules and regulations of the apartment complex you are living in. It's also a plus to be on your landlord's good side when it comes down to maintenance requests and other issues. If you want to go even further, you should familiari]e yourself with your community’s surroundings and usual placement of things. This way, if something looks o΍, you can report it to your landlord or security management. It’s very important to take security measures no matter what apartment you move into. The tips above are also good for those who have been living in an apartment struggling with security. Q By Victoria Naranjo for Apartment Showcase Photo: Jen Gallardo via Flickr Creative Commons

‘Blindspotting’

Don’t take the chance The musical sequel ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ hits all the wrong notes

FILM REVIEW One frequent complaint about musicals is the characters who are always just bursting into song. That’s unfair. In a good musical, the songs (and, at times, the dancing) serve to propel the arc of the character or the story, conveying a heightened sense of emotion. Bursting into song doesn’t disrupt the reality. It rises organically from it. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is not a good musical. In this sequel /prequel to 2008’s unnecessary but charming “Mamma Mia!,” a jukebox musical featuring the songs of ABBA, we join Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) a year after her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), has died. Sophie is about to open a hotel on the Greek island of Kalokairi, partially in memory of her mother and partially so something can go wrong. As Sophie prepares for the gala, her story is interspersed with flashbacks to the arrival of her mother (played in her younger

iteration by Lily James) on the island. More important, these flashbacks introduce us to the three men who will become Sophie’s “fathers.” (The first movie was about determining which of the three men was her biological dad; they all decided to assume the mantle.) Needless to say, no one comes to a “Mamma Mia!” movie for the plot. They come for the ABBA. While any similarly conceived musical might struggle with jamming songs into a story they were not written for, the music must still function in the way songs do in traditional musicals. If they can’t do that, they at least must provide some fun. Here, they do neither. That’s not the fault of the Swedish pop group, a staple of 1970s Top 40 radio. You don’t hang around as long as ABBA has without at least a few catchy tunes. But nearly every performance of their songs is utterly joyless, as though the actors can’t wait to get back to the beach and

spend their paychecks. That makes the one big, energetic dance number — which is, of course, “Dancing Queen” — jarringly stand out. Its exuberant, enthusiastic energy seems to belong in an entirely different movie. Most of the performers in the flashback subplot are game enough to at least attempt to bring in some of the qualities of the actors who portray their later selves. Jessica Keenan Wynn, as the younger version of the wine- and man-loving Tanya, channels the look and mannerisms of Christine Baranski. Hugh

Lily James, center, tries very hard to make you forget that she’s not Meryl Streep.

Starring Daveed Diggs as a felon three days away from having his probation lifted and Rafael Casal as his hotheaded best friend, “Blindspotting” is a remarkably vivid examination of modern life. The film is willing to take on not just capitalism, structural racism and contested social space, but the perverse implications of masculinity at its most tough and toxic. ANN HORNADAY

Skinner, on the other hand, playing Colin Firth’s young would-be doppelganger, was apparently cast only because they’re both white men. Everyone else is somewhere in between. The screenplay — written by Ol Parker, who also directs — fails everyone. James tries her best to bring Streep’s original spirit into her performance, but the only reason we know that her version of Donna is quirky is that she wears a floppy hat, has mysterious access to unlimited financial resources and has a personality that verges on obnoxious. Every complication is cliche, every resolution predictable. It’s possible to enjoy a bad movie, or even a dumb one. But when bad and dumb come together in an unholy Reese’s cup of moviemaking, the mix becomes unpalatable. Yes, you can dance. Yes, you can even jive. Yes, you can be having the time of your life. Just not here.

‘Eighth’ wonder: Kayla’s finding her way, just like we did

trailer park

Burnham never condescends. There’s never even a whiff of “well, she spends too much time on her phone!” For those of us who grew up in a time when passing notes was the preferred method of classroom communication, it is so easy to think, “Whew! I’m glad I’m not a kid today.” And I AM glad I’m not; not only are my awkward fashion choices (I was into REALLY big earrings for a while) preserved only in yearbooks, but having to memorize phone numbers means I will know my friends’ parents’ phone numbers FOREVER. It’s OK to empathize with Kayla and be glad we’re not her, but it’s a short step from “I’m glad I’m not growing up now” to “and if I WERE, I would definitely do things better than the kids who are.” The only reason we adults aren’t growing up today is the same reason we didn’t grow up during the Black Death: luck. It’s easy to be sure that we’d be the ones washing our hands in 1348, just like it’s easy to be sure that we’d never Snapchat nudes to the popular guy who asked. So when you see “Eighth Grade,” don’t just cringe and

The woman next to me and I watched most of “Eighth Grade” in the exact same position — fingers over our eyes, cringing in our seats. She looked to be 15 years younger than me, but we both knew exactly what was happening onscreen. And we were glad it wasn’t happening to us. “Eighth Grade” is the funny, sad, sensitive story of Kayla (Elsie Fisher), a 13-year-old who is finishing up eighth grade. She wants to be seen, but she also wants to blend into the walls, a contradiction best exemplified when she is (quietly) disappointed that she didn’t win the “Most Quiet” superlative. Social media makes this possible — Kayla films YouTube videos that no one watches; she spends a good chunk of time scrolling through Instagram, liking the pictures of the popular kids who don’t talk to her; and her Twitter feed is dominated by blue-checked celebrities who will never know her. Social media is a big chunk of her life, the way it is for most teenagers today, but writer-director Bo

thank the God of Teenagers that it’s not you up there on the screen. The issues that Kayla deals with are the same ones that 13-year-old girls have dealt with ever since the first caveteenager snapped at her dad for eating his

saber-toothed tiger all weird, GOD. But look beyond the commonalities — and then try to look beyond the differences. Take some time and ask why Kayla uses the social media that she does and how that must affect her. Don’t assume she’s doing it wrong, and don’t be so sure you’d do it differently. Social media is one of the ways Kayla navigates the world; instead of mocking her compass, try to follow behind her for a bit. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

‘Mary Queen of Scots’

‘Boy Erased’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Dec. 7

EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 2

SUMMARY: A few things you should know about Mary Stuart: She’s not Bloody Mary, and she grew up in France so she wouldn’t have a Scottish accent. That said, it looks like Saoirse Ronan kills it as the doomed noble (not a spoiler; it happened in 1587) and Margot Robbie is right there with her as her cousin Elizabeth. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: In this film based on a true story, Baptist parents send their teenage son to a “conversion program” after he violates Leviticus 19:19. No, wait, that’s the one that forbids wearing clothing of two different materials. It must be 19:28. Oh, sorry — that’s the one about no tattoos. Maybe it’s some other verse that gets WAY more attention than the others. K.P.K.

Feature film adaptation of documentary “Three Identical Strangers” in development

FILM REVIEW There are two, and only two, pleasures to be had in “The Equalizer 2,” a sequel to the 2014 action thriller about a violent vigilante. The first — Denzel Washington in the title role as an ex-military man and former black ops agent — is not inconsiderable. Even in mediocre material, Washington shines. The second pleasure is more of an acquired taste. The first film culminated in Washington’s Robert McCall killing an array of bad guys using tools from the home-improvement store where he worked, as a cover job, at the time. Taking place among the store aisles, drenched in an artful, artificial downpour produced by the sprinkler system, the scene tickled a certain pleasure center of the reptile brain. Similarly, “Equalizer 2” moves toward a viscerally gratifying crescendo of violent revenge. Here, the third act takes place as a hurricane is bearing down on a Massachusetts beachside town. Hey, if it worked once … McCall, for all his high-minded talk, seems to take a little too much sick glee in all the bloodletting he engages in. “The only disappointment,” McCall tells his victims as he prepares to kill them, “is that I only get to do it once.” For our part, that disappointment is short-lived. All we have to do is wait for “The Equalizer 3.” MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Deadline: Lin-Manuel Miranda to direct film version of musical “Tick, Tick ... Boom!”

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Netflix orders celebrity season of ‘Queer Eye’

G-Eazy debuts ‘I’m over my ex’ hairdo Recently single rapper G-Eazy showed off a new platinum blond hair style on the ESPYs red carpet Wednesday. The rapper also shot down rumors that he’s dating Demi Lovato after his recent split with Halsey, telling “Entertainment Tonight” that Lovato is “just a friend.” The musicians were photographed holding hands outside a club in Los Angeles last weekend.

Post Malone’s fans apparently think the rapper would be a great candidate for a makeover courtesy of “Queer Eye” and the Fab Five, Page Six reports. On Tuesday, “Queer Eye” star Karamo Brown responded to several fans’ request that Post Malone appear on the show: “Why does everyone want @PostMalone to be on the show. Did he request it?” Post Malone then responded, “no they just think I’m ugly and smell lol.” Brown, the culture expert on the Netflix series, replied with a mini-pep talk. “I personally love [your] style and music,” he tweeted. Season 3 of “Queer Eye” began filming Tuesday in Kansas City, Mo. (EXPRESS)

Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg told The Times UK that Viagra is “the worst thing that has happened to women in the last 15 years.” Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998. “For men it used to be all about getting it up. ‘Did I?’ ‘Can I?’ There was a certain fairness,” von Furstenberg said. “Now, with Viagra … they just feel … I think Viagra is the worst thing.” (EXPRESS)

Aaron Rodgers and Danica Patrick made their red carpet debut at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, Page Six reports. The Packers quarterback, 34, and retired race car driver, 36, confirmed their relationship in January. In addition, Patrick delivered the opening monologue at the ESPYs. “Last night was a night I will never forget,” she wrote on an Instagram post of her and Rodgers on Thursday. (EXPRESS)
