It’s not an alligator: Caiman found in D.C.
SIGHTINGS
Is escaped Va. red panda still out there?
ANIMALS A 4-foot-long caiman, a reptile similar to an alligator, was found in a large storage bin this week in the basement of a home in Southeast Washington. Yes, Washington, D.C. — not south Florida, where they’re sometimes spotted. D.C. police posted a tweet about the caiman Thursday, calling it an alligator, but officials at the D.C. Humane Rescue Alliance corrected police: It’s actually a caiman. The Humane Rescue Alliance received a tip about the animal at a home in the 3500 block of Brothers Place SE, near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in the Congress Heights neighborhood. With a search warrant, the rescue group, with help from D.C. police, went to the home Wednesday and found the caiman. David M. Smith, chief of communications for the Humane

Police said it would be relocated to a “safe habitat.” Smith said it is illegal to possess the animals in the District and surrounding states, calling them dangerous. Police doubled down on that sentiment in a Twitter post: “Remember that alligators should not be considered house pets!” It wasn’t clear Thursday why
the residents of the home had the caiman, officials said. Police said no charges are expected to be filed. Smith called it a “very rare” discovery in the District. A Twitter user who goes by @bonsaidream replied to D.C. police, saying, “I’m sorry ... did you say D.C.? Washington, D.C.?” Indeed, the nation’s capital. This isn’t the Sunshine State. The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk, Va., has recently received at least three reports of sightings of Sunny the red panda, who escaped the zoo in January 2017. Virginia Zoo Executive Director Greg Bockheim said employees had examined various kinds of animal poop after people reported “some kind of poop in their yard they’ve never seen before.” It didn’t belong to Sunny. Bockheim said Sunny probably would have been captured by now if she were alive. (AP)

Doughnut bribe attempt didn’t work on Md. police Police in Frederick, Md., said officers received a special offer last week. Police found marijuana and an air pistol in Matthew Tyler Rosenberg’s possession. Rosenberg then told police he worked at a Krispy Kreme and promised to give them doughnuts if they let him “just go home.” He now faces several charges, including resisting arrest and attempting to bribe a public employee. The study calculated that income against an average two-bedroom apartment cost of $2,500 a month. D.C.’s income threshold was the sixth-highest reported in the study. San Francisco had the highest, at $187,800. (EXPRESS)

Zoo cancels parking garage THE DISTRICT The Smithsonian Institution has canceled plans for a six-story parking garage at the National Zoo, citing the roughly $70 million cost and plans for ongoing renovations of animal habitats, the zoo said Thursday. The decision was reached Tuesday and made public Thursday on the Federal Business Opportunities website, zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson said. The garage, first proposed a decade ago, would have increased the zoo’s parking spaces from 880 to 1,285. The $25-per-vehicle,

But many residents of the neighborhoods around the zoo opposed the plan, saying, among other things, that visitors should be discouraged from driving to the zoo. Final plans for the project had yet to be approved by the National Capital Planning Commission

Meanwhile, “an expert panel reviewed the [garage project] bids, and the zoo team reviewed the bids,” Baker-Masson said. “And in the context of our existing financial obligations … the Smithsonian decided that the … project has been canceled.” Baker-Masson said the decision to cancel was not a result of the

She also said current zoo visitation is lower than expected, because of the extremely hot weather and numerous rainy days. “When we have lower visitation, we have lower revenue.” As for the zoo’s new fence, earlier this month, the National Capital Planning Commission deferred until September a decision on that project. Rain on your bad commute Deluges weren’t all that went wrong for Metro riders this week
Dealing with disruptions on the Red Line RICKY CARIOTI (THE WASHINGTON POST)
TRANSPORTATION As Red Line riders slog through their first week of the 45-day shutdown between Fort Totten and NoMa stations, the going has been anything but easy. First, there was the seemingly ceaseless rain — a transportation nuisance at the best of times. During this precarious first week of disruptions for passengers on the Glenmont side of the Red Line, the rain just made a bad situation much worse. Riders stood in the downpour as they waited for shuttles, some of which were caught up in rainyday congestion. Standing water caused a stairway at Fort Totten to be blocked off, “resulting in some short-duration backups moving through the station,” according to Metro spokesman Dan Stessel. In turn, that crowding occasionally triggered safety features on the escalators, causing them to temporarily stop running during critical time windows. Additionally, a signal problem Monday at Waterfront station necessitated single-tracking and clogged up the Yellow and Green lines. On Tuesday, train malfunctions at Twinbrook and Farragut North further slowed down the western end of the Red Line, which was already operating at reduced capacity due to the complications of reversing the direction of train traffic at NoMa station.
Riders dealt with a rainy first week of station closures on the Red Line that are scheduled to last until Labor Day.
And on Wednesday morning, a person suspected of involvement in a shooting the night before was spotted by Metro Transit Police at Gallery Place. The suspect jumped onto the tracks in an attempt to escape from police. Metro had to cut the power to the third rail and temporarily freeze all surrounding train traffic, which in turn stopped train traffic all along the Green and Yellow lines — the lines that are supposed to serve as a release valve for displaced Red Line riders during the shutdown. So, yeah. Things could have gone better. Metro says it is trying to stack the Green and Yellow lines with all eight-car trains, in an attempt to maximize capacity for Red Line riders coming from Glenmont who are now forced
Try taking the bus Metro has a full list of bus alternatives at wmata.com, but here are some highlights: Silver Spring residents commuting downtown can use the 79, which runs along Georgia Avenue to the Gallery Place and Archives stations, or the S9 running along 16th Street to Franklin Square. Takoma Park residents should consider the 59 MetroExtra, which runs down 14th Street to Metro Center, or the 52 or 54 buses that make more frequent stops on a similar route. Fort Totten commuters may want to take the 64 bus to Federal Triangle, the 80 bus to McPherson Square and the Kennedy Center, or the E4 to Friendship Heights.
to switch lines at Fort Totten. On Wednesday, the popular Twitter account @MetroReasons noticed that eight-car trains are serving the other side of the Red Line, too. Officials with the District Department of Transportation say they’re taking steps to increase awareness of the bus-only lane that they’ve created to help the shuttles pass more easily along Rhode Island Avenue. They’re adding more signs alerting car owners to the enhanced parking restrictions, and they have D.C. police and Department of Public Works staff out on traffic enforcement duty, ensuring cars don’t try to edge in on the bus line. Even so, the remainder of the shutdown won’t be a walk i n t he pa rk . M A RT IN E P OW ER S (THE WASHINGTON POST)
DIRE WARNING
‘Only take Metro if you have no other option.’ That was the advice Metro offered in an ad in Thursday’s Express about upcoming track work on the Orange, Silver and Blue lines. The reaction on Twitter was fierce. “Yeah let’s see the other option I have … to get to Rosslyn from Silver Spring? NOTHING!” @aattard77 tweeted. Still, given how limited capacity will be from Aug. 11 to 26, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said, riders of those lines really should take the advice to heart. (EXPRESS)
After a week of closures, here are tips for coping with Red Line disruptions from now to Labor Day: Avoid the shuttle buses unless your starting or end point is at Brookland or Rhode Island Ave. stations. Even with their special lanes, the bus shuttles have been s-l-o-w. If you’re coming from the northeast end of the Red Line, it’s best to switch to the Green or Yellow line at Fort Totten and take the train to Gallery Place, where you can then transfer back to the Red Line. If you’re starting at Brookland or Rhode Island Ave. stations, use the express shuttles. Skip the station-bystation shuttle buses, and use the routes that make a straight shot to Union Station and Gallery Place. Board the Green Line at a station farther out from Fort Totten. Crowding has made Fort Totten a nightmare. So, if you have the option, consider driving or taking the bus to the West Hyattsville, Prince George’s Plaza, College Park or Greenbelt stations. Board the train there to avoid the masses gathered on the platform at Fort Totten. Stay informed of changes to service. Have a backup option in mind — in case a malfunctioning train or a signal problem throws a wrench in your preferred detour strategy. MARTINE POWERS (TWP)

Lower blood pressure cuts mental decline
Mourners in Sweida, Syria, carry a coffin Thursday after ISIS attacks a day earlier killed more than 200 people.
Mass funerals held after ISIS blasts kill hundreds Attacks in Syria shatter community that largely stayed out of civil war SWEIDA, SYRIA Mourners in southern Syria attended mass funerals Thursday for least 216 people killed in coordinated attacks by Islamic State fighters on a usually peaceful city and surrounding countryside. In the worst violence to hit the area since the country’s conflict began, the militants also reportedly abducted at least 18 people, activists said. Militants launched their offensive with a spate of suicide bombing attacks in the city of Sweida early Wednesday, while other militants swarmed several villages in the province’s northeast.
13%
The simultaneous attacks evoked the dark days of Islamic State violence that beleaguered Syria and neighboring Iraq during the group’s heyday in 2014 and 2015. The abduction of civilians — activists say at least 14 were women — also was reminiscent of the group’s tactic of taking hostages and using women as sex slaves. A mass funeral was held Thursday in Sweida, with men gathering in a hall to pay their respects to the dead. The devastated city was covered in black and shops were closed during the day to mourn the mass deaths. Until Wednesday, Sweida, home to a predominantly Druze community, had largely been spared the violence that has hit Syria since 2011. As Syria’s civil
war took increasingly sectarian undertones, pitting the largely Sunni opposition against the predominantly Alawite ruling class, the Druze minority stayed largely on the sidelines. The attacks rocked the community, sparking criticism of the government for failing to protect the minority group that has for years been spared the violence. Diana Semaan, a Syria researcher at the rights group Amnesty International, said there were signs that no government troops or security were present to provide protection for the community when it came under attack. “We call on all sides to prioritize the protection of civilians. This didn’t happen [in Sweida],” she said. “No government troops were [on] site.” SARAH EL DEEB (AP)
Lowering blood pressure more than usually recommended not only helps prevent heart problems, it also cuts the risk of mental decline that often leads to Alzheimer’s disease, a major study has found. People whose top blood pressure reading was brought down to 120 instead of 140 were 19 percent less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment. They also had fewer signs of damage on brain scans, and there was a possible trend toward fewer cases of dementia. Results presented Wednesday at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference are expected to be published later this year. (AP)
OCEAN WILDERNESS
The proportion of Earth’s marine ecosystems that can be classified as “wilderness,” according to the first comprehensive mapping of ocean wilderness, a study published Thursday in Current Biology found. To be classified as “wilderness,” the study defined an area as “mostly free of human disturbance.” The analysis categorized and mapped ways humans have changed the ocean, such as fishing, shipping and pollution. It also revealed that no part of the ocean is untouched by humans and that coastal areas are the most disturbed by humans. Scientists test lizards’ strength in high winds SCIENCE Tropical lizards have a stick-toitiveness in high wind that puts TV weather reporters to shame. Now we know why, thanks in part to a high-powered leaf blower. Hurricanes Irma and Maria put a group of little tree-hugging lizards to the test, and scientists were perfectly positioned to see which reptiles survived and why. Then, Harvard researchers cranked up the leaf blower to see just how 47 of the Caribbean critters held onto a wooden rod. Under tropical storm-force winds, the lizards lounged. As the wind speed cranked up, they still held on, although it got tougher. Even at 102 mph, the lizards grasped the pole with two clingy front feet while their tails and back legs flapped in the wind. “All the lizard needs is an inside-out umbrella and the image would be perfect,” study lead author Colin Donihue said. But there’s only so much a little lizard can take. At 108 mph, it was flying-lizard time. “They do go flying in the air, but it is softly into the net and everybody was returned back home” unharmed, said Donihue. The lizards’ secret to surviving hurricanes? The survivors had bigger toe pads, longer front limbs and smaller back limbs compared to the population before the storm, according to a study that appeared Wednesday in Nature. The study is the first to show natural selection via hurricane, Donihue said. SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

Trump: U.S. will sanction Turkey over U.S. pastor
CAROL D. LEONNIG, TOM HAMBURGER AND
FOREIGN AFFAIRS President Trump said Thursday that the U.S. would impose “large sanctions” on Turkey for its detention of Andrew Brunson, an American pastor held for nearly two years on terrorism-related charges who U.S. officials say is innocent. In a tweet, Trump wrote, “This innocent man of faith should be released immediately!” His comments echoed a stern warning from Vice President Pence to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a speech in Washington earlier Thursday. Pence said Erdogan should allow Brunson, above, to return to the U.S. “now or be prepared to face the consequences.” In a blunt rebuke on Twitter, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said: “No one dictates Turkey. We will never tolerate threats from anybody. Rule of law is for everyone; no exception.” On Wednesday, a Turkish court had ordered that Brunson be freed from prison and placed under house arrest while his trial continues because of “health problems,” according to Turkey’s official Anadolu news agency. The Trump administration has repeatedly pressed Turkey to release Brunson, an evangelical Christian pastor from North Carolina who has lived in Turkey for 23 years. He was one of thousands swept up in a campaign of mass arrests following a coup attempt against Erdogan in July 2016. JOHN

POLITICS For the past decade, Michael Cohen worked as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and fixer. He said he would take a bullet for Trump, and, even after the president passed him over for a White House job, Cohen still professed his eternal loyalty. But in Trump’s world, eternity has limits. By releasing audio of his covertly recorded conversation with Trump about purchasing the rights to a Playboy centerfold’s story of an extramarital affair, Cohen made a decisive break from his longtime client. The move punctuates the steady deterioration of a relationship between Cohen and Trump and raises concerns in the White House that the former could spill secrets about the latter to the FBI. In the nearly four months since FBI agents raided his office, home and hotel room, Cohen has felt wounded and abandoned by Trump. Cohen got frustrated when Trump started talking about him in the past tense, panicked last month when he thought the president no longer cared about his plight, and became furious when Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani contradicted some of his accounts, according to his associates. In Cohen’s gravest hour, as one associate described it, Trump was “leaving him out in the wilderness.” The result is open warfare between attorney and former client. Cohen has chosen to morph from Trump’s pugnacious defender to a truth-teller without regard for any possible political or legal ramifications for the president, according to Lanny Davis, one

of Cohen’s attorneys. “He had to hit a reset button,” Davis said in an interview. “He had to say he respected the FBI. He had to say he believed the intelligence agencies that Russia meddled in the election. He had to describe the Trump Tower meeting as extremely poor judgment at best. And, ultimately, he said, ‘I’m not going to be a punching bag anymore,’ which he had been when he said, ‘I’ll take a bullet.’ ” Within Trump’s political orbit, the uncertainty about what other damaging information Cohen may possess — and if he plans to weaponize it against the president, as now seems possible if not likely — has allies worried. “The general feeling inside and outside the building is that if there was anything, this would be the guy who would know it and now give it up,” said a Republican operative close to the White House. Trump’s legal team considers Cohen’s chess move inexplicable,
Not a legal strategy Michael Cohen’s public release of the Trump-Cohen audio appears to be driven more by feelings of betrayal and his outrage over the president’s indifference than by a legal strategy to help his case. Current and former law enforcement officials questioned why Cohen — someone seen as angling for a plea deal — would choose to make potential evidence public. That kind of maneuver generally angers investigators and can make it harder to cut a deal, these officials said. (TWP)
arguing that the release of the recording does not hurt the president and questioning what Cohen may be trying to accomplish. Davis said Cohen feels isolated and is “suffering” and “sees himself as alone against the president of the United States, Rudy Giuliani and the whole administration.”
Former Trump staffer Omarosa Manigault to release ”explosive” tell-all book Aug. 14
Cohen’s feud with Trump could make him an unlikely hero of the resistance movement. Davis said that as he walked through New York’s Pennsylvania Station after his interview Wednesday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” people slapped him on the back and said, “Please tell Michael Cohen, ‘Thank you for telling the truth.’” He added: “All of a sudden, millions of people have invested their hopes in Michael Cohen.” Last week, Cohen invited the Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights advocate who has been at loggerheads with Trump, to meet for breakfast at the Regency Hotel, where Cohen has been staying. Cohen chose a table in the middle of the see-and-be-seen restaurant, Sharpton recalled. “He’s totally turned on him,” Sharpton said. “He clearly wanted me to know he was not Team Trump anymore.” PHILIP RUCKER,

GOP bid to impeach Rosenstein sputters

Local news that’s…well, slightly askew.
POLITICS House Speaker Paul Ryan spoke out Thursday against an effort by a small group of conservatives to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, dooming the endeavor for now and easing a months-long standoff between House Republicans and the Justice Department. Ryan said the tussle over document requests between House Republicans and Rosenstein, who oversees the federal TrumpRussia investigation, doesn’t rise to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors” that could warrant impeachment under the Constitution. “I don’t think we should be cavalier with this process or with this term,” Ryan said. He also said he is encouraged by progress on the document production. Ryan made the comments a day after the group of 11 House Republicans sharply escalated the extended clash with the Justice Department by filing articles of impeachment against Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Their move late Wednesday came after months of criticism aimed at the department — and the Russia investigation in particular — from President Trump and his Republican allies. Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether Trump’s campaign was involved. The impeachment effort was led by Rep. Mark Meadows, N.C., the chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, who talks to Trump frequently and

A bid for House speaker GOP Rep. Jim Jordan, a leader in the effort to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, launched a long-shot bid for speaker of the House on Thursday if Republicans keep their majority in the midterms. often defends him to colleagues. As Ryan voiced his disapproval, Meadows acknowledged that he didn’t currently have the
votes to pass the impeachment resolution and said he wouldn’t use procedural maneuvers to trigger an immediate vote — something he had threatened to do. The House left Thursday afternoon for a five-week recess. Instead, Meadows said he had a commitment from leaders to vote on holding Rosenstein in contempt of Congress when the House returns in September if certain documents are still outstanding. Meanwhile, Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended Rosenstein in a Boston speech, saying he has the “highest confidence” in his top deputy. Rosenstein has overseen the Russia investigation since last year, when Sessions recused himself following reports of his own meeting with the Russian ambassador. MARY CLARE JALONICK AND CHAD DAY (AP)

nation+world Company’s one-day loss is the largest in Wall Street history TECHNOLOGY Facebook faced a day of reckoning as its shares plunged Thursday in the company’s worst trading day since going public in 2012. It was the biggest one-day loss of market value in U.S. stock market history. The 19 percent drop in Facebook shares vaporized $119 billion in market value. CEO Mark Zuckerberg alone saw his net worth fall by roughly $16 billion. In a sign of just how bullish investor expectations had been running, though the collapse merely returned Facebook shares to a level last seen in early May.
At that point, the stock was still recovering from an earlier battering over a major privacy scandal. Late Wednesday, Facebook warned that its revenue growth will slow significantly for at least the remainder of the year and expenses will continue to skyrocket. The earnings covered the company’s first full quarter since the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal erupted. But analysts attributed the user growth shortfall largely to European privacy rules that went into effect in May, not to the furor over the political consulting firm with ties to President Trump, which improperly accessed the data of tens of millions of Facebook users. Shares closed down Thursday almost 19 percent, at $176.26.

Facebook loses $119B in value
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg saw his net worth fall by roughly $16 billion on Thursday.
Facebook had 2.23 billion monthly users as of June 30, up 11 percent from a year earlier. Analysts were expecting 2.25
billion. User growth was flat in the U.S. and the rest of North America; it declined in Europe. The company earned $5.1 billion, or $1.74 per share, up 31 percent and above analysts’ estimates of $1.71. But revenue — up 42 percent to $13.23 billion — was slightly below the $13.34 billion that Wall Street was expecting. Facebook said the European privacy rules, called the General Data Protection Regulation, did not have a big effect on the quarter’s revenue, but also noted that they were only in effect for about a month before the quarter ended. Over the long term, GDPR may end up favoring Facebook and other large companies that have the resources to adapt to new requirements. BARBARA ORTUTAY (AP)

SCIENCE More than a century after Albert Einstein proposed it, his theory of general relativity has passed another test. With giant telescopes pointed at the center of our galaxy, a team of European researchers observed a fast-moving star that got close to a monstrous black hole. They saw that the black hole distorted the light waves from the star in a way that supports Einstein’s theory. The result was reported Thursday in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. Einstein’s theory says the fabric of the universe is not simply space, but an entity called space-time, which is warped by the presence of heavy objects. Black holes offer a good opportunity to test that idea. The one that lies at the heart of the Milky Way is 4 million times as massive as our sun. “I, just like every physicist in the world, would have loved to finally see a crack in Einstein’s relativity,” said Ohio State University astrophysicist Paul Sutter. “But he’s outsmarted us.” Scientists know that the theory still doesn’t explain everything about the universe. So they keep testing it time and again. So far, nobody has been able to overturn it. Although general relativity has been seen before, this was the first detection made by observing the motion of a star near a super-massive black hole. EMILIANO RODRIGUEZ MEGA (AP)

Former cricket star Imran Khan declared victory Thursday in Pakistan’s parliamentary election. TV stations reported Khan and his Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, maintained a commanding lead. His leading rival, Shahbaz Sharif, rejected the outcome, citing allegations of vote-rigging. Pakistan’s election commission struggled with technical problems, delaying the announcement of final results until today. In an address to the nation, Khan pledged to create an Islamic welfare state to provide education and employment for the poor, and to fulfill a campaign promise to create 10 million jobs. (AP)
The last six members of a Japanese doomsday cult who remained on death row were executed Thursday for a series of crimes in the 1990s, including a sarin gas attack on Tokyo subways that killed 13 people. Thirteen members of the group, named Aum Shinrikyo, or Supreme Truth, received death sentences. The first seven were hanged about three weeks ago. Japan has never executed so many people in one month, Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa said. The March 20, 1995, subway attack that sickened 6,000 people and sowed panic during the morning commute was the group’s most notorious crime. (AP)
California Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday issued emergency proclamations in both Riverside County in Southern California and Shasta County in Northern California, authorizing the state to rally resources to local government. In addition, police on Wednesday arrested Brandon N. STARTING SLOWLY
Williams held out of team session

Maybe it was the wide blue skies in Richmond that inspired Redskins quarterback Alex Smith to go deep. After an offseason full of claustrophobic workouts inside a domed facility in Ashburn, Va., Washington’s new passer threw the ball far early and often throughout the first day of training camp Thursday in Richmond. Smith dropped a dime in the corner of the end to receiver Josh Doctson. On another play, he rolled out and launched another deep ball to tight end Jeremy Sprinkle. Smith also completed a pass across the middle to Robert Davis and sneaked one past cornerback Josh Norman. Safety D.J. Swearinger kept Smith from a perfect morning when he swiped a poor throw into double coverage. But the first day is supposed to yield mixed results, and Smith looked both unshackled in his new offense and unfazed by his mistake. “I love that we just came out and started firing right away,” said the 34-year-old quarterback, who was traded from Kansas City in January. Meanwhile, the pleasant demeanor rookie nose tackle Daron Payne has shown since draft day melted away
Thursday when he lined up across center Chase Roullier. The first-round pick’s face drained of emotion, and he threw a swim move past the starting center. Proving no fluke, Payne later bulled past reserve center Demetrius Rhaney. The Redskins may just have an inside playmaker. Ask tight end Garrett Hudson whether it was a physical day, even without pads. Hudson was getting ready to catch a ball from reserve quarterback Kevin Hogan when cornerback Kenny Ladler blindsided him with a hit that brought the practice’s biggest gasp from the crowd of around 500. Ladler was looking at the ball, not Hudson, when plowing through him for the interception. That one looked like it hurt, but the team’s first injury was a quadriceps strain suffered by linebacker Zach Brown. He’s “day-to-day.” Offensive tackle Trent Williams was looking as smooth as ever in his return from offseason knee surgery. In limited action, the offensive captain and six-time Pro Bowl selection looked to return to form. After playing through pain last year, Williams looks to have regained his quickness and agility. That’s vital to the team’s success, because the left tackle will be able to spring holes for rookie running back Derrius Guice.
After playing through pain last year and recovering from surgery to re-align his kneecap, Trent Williams returned to the field for the Redskins’ first day of training camp on Thursday. However, in the spirit of easing back into the action, the left tackle turned into an observer during team drills. Williams said he’s relieved that he no longer has to worry about causing further damage to his knee. “[I] got some mental security knowing that the issue is fixed and nothing else is in jeopardy,” he said. Three other offensive linemen also began camp in limited capacities. The team is also exercising caution with tackles Morgan Moses, Ty Nsekhe and T.J. Clemmings.

Rookie running back Derrius Guice secures the ball while making a catch.
Maybe it was a coincidence that the first snap of training camp went to Guice, but the Redskins desperately need a featured back, and the secondrounder has been solid inside and out. Guice will be running behind Williams often. Overall, it wasn’t a bad start by the team’s new stars.

Strasburg returns to DL with a pinched nerve

Yankees land All-Star Happ from Toronto
Neck problem leads Nats to scratch starter on morning of outing
Stephen Strasburg allowed six runs in 4⅔ inning Friday in his comeback from an inflamed shoulder.
SUSAN WALSH (AP)
MLB The Nationals, never particularly forthcoming with injuries, hid news of another one Thursday morning when the MLB transaction log revealed they had placed right-hander Stephen Strasburg on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to July 22. The 30-year-old had been on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation since June 10 before allowing six runs in 42/3 innings Friday night. He will go on the disabled list this time with a pinched nerve in his neck. Teams often announce they have scratched the next day’s starter after the previous game, but the Nationals did not do so Wednesday. The Nationals made the move official later Thursday, calling up left-hander Tommy Milone from Class AAA to start in his place at Miami. (Thursday’s game ended after Express’ deadline). Milone, a 10th-round choice of the Nationals in the 2008 draft, has a 4.19 ERA over 20 starts at Syracuse this season. After Starsburg’s first start back Friday night, he and Max Scherzer engaged in a heated argument in the dugout, one caught by cameras that had “nothing to do with pitching,” according to a person with direct knowledge of the incident. In hindsight, one
could speculate that Strasburg was frustrated with the fact that he still did not feel right and it showed in the results. Strasburg’s move to the DL came hours after Tanner Roark rejuvenated hopes for this season with an eight-inning masterpiece that seemed to signal the return of the vaunted Nationals rotation. Erick Fedde filled in for Strasburg during that first disabled list stint, but he has since landed there himself with right shoulder

The Yankees acquired left-hander J.A. Happ from Toronto on Thursday in a deal that sent infielder Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Bill McKinney to the Blue Jays. Happ, who turns 36 in October, is 10-6 with a 4.18 ERA in 20 starts and was a first-time All-Star this year. He joins a New York rotation that includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray. Happ has a $13 million salary this season, and the Yankees are responsible for the remaining $4,543,011. Drury, 25, began the season as the Yankees’ starting third baseman but lost his job to rookie Miguel Andujar. (AP)
inflammation. Right-hander Jefry Rodriguez has not pitched since July 20, so he would be available on full rest. Austin Voth pitched Wednesday. Milone has not pitched since July 18 when he threw seven scoreless innings. Whatever the explanation behind the timing of Strasburg’s move, it can only stoke frustration and make the team’s climb back into contention more difficult. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

United looks for momentum against Rapids MLS For D.C. United, the opening of Audi Field served as the light at the end of the tunnel throughout the first half of its 2018 campaign. A schedule backloaded with home games generated hope of grabbing late-season momentum. The stadium’s debut went according to plan — D.C. rolled to a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 14 — but a pair of reality checks ensued: a 3-1 loss at Atlanta United last weekend, then a 1-0 defeat to the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday at Audi Field. Entering Thursday, Atlanta and the Red Bulls were first and second in the Eastern Conference standings. D.C. was last. “That’s two pretty good teams,” D.C. coach Ben Olsen, above, said. “There’s some urgency here, but sometimes you have to tip your hat a little bit.” Although D.C. has 13 of 17 matches at home to end the season, and the club has played three fewer games than any other team in the Eastern Conference, the reality is that United (3-9-5) still sits 14 points out of a playoff spot. With the struggling Colorado Rapids (3-11-5) visiting Saturday night (7, WJLA 24/7 News) United has to make up ground. “We have a game on Saturday here at home against a team who is in a similar position to us,” midfielder Paul Arriola said. “We have to pick up points. The only thing acceptable … is three points.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

‘Generation Wealth’ PARAMOUNT PICTURES
Tom Cruise completes a task that, based on franchise precedent, really should be called “Mission: Tough but Plausible.”
Aiming for new heights The ‘Mission: Impossible’ series ups the scale with the messy but enjoyable ‘Fallout’ FILM REVIEW In “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” the sixth installment of the espionage-action franchise, Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt receives his latest instructions by way of an old-fashioned tape recorder nestled inside an edition of Homer’s “Odyssey.” It’s a quaint nod to the 1960s TV show on which the “Mission: Impossible” movies are based — movies that have become so expansively scaled, preposterously plotted and implausibly choreographed that they merit renaming. Presumably, “Mission: Irrational,” “Mission: Did He Really Just Do That?” and “Mission: Okay, Now You’re Just Messing With Us on Purpose” were taken. Let it be stipulated that “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” is often ridiculous. It’s too long by at least 20 minutes. The plot is laughably convoluted; the action — propulsive, percussive, brutally pulverizing — is exhausting. Still, even its most irritating parts don’t fatally damage a whole that works amazingly well, despite its own excesses.
It’s an efficient, attractive delivery system for the kind of spectacle we’ve come to expect from mid-career Cruise, who famously insists on doing his own stunts and most likely has a motorcycle chase permanently written into every contract. As “Fallout” opens, Ethan is marking time in Dublin, waiting for his next assignment from the Impossible Mission Force and fighting the guilt that’s been troubling him since his separation from his wife, Julia (Michelle Monaghan). But the brooding thoughts are banished soon enough, when Ethan is tasked with tracking down some errant plutonium, and bringing to heel his arch-nemesis Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), the leader of a freelance terrorist network. It would all be easy-peasy if it weren’t for Ethan’s pesky moral conscience, which leads him to lose said plutonium. That error leads Angela Bassett’s gimleteyed CIA chief to assign Ethan a minder, a ramrod-straight operative named Walker. Portrayed by Henry Cavill in a handsomely

‘Mission: Impossible — Fallout’ (PG-13, 147 min.) DIRECTOR: Christopher McQuarrie STARS: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson IN A NUTSHELL: Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt looks to put things right after a mission gone wrong leaves the world at risk.
wooden performance, the mustachioed, perfectly tousled Walker makes an amusing foil both for Ethan’s competitive instincts and his altruism, which in the first hour of “Fallout” are played for laughs, but also thrills in the form of a daring midair parachute rescue. But that bit of business soon pales as bloody gunbattles, car chases, a rooftop foot race, a helicopter chicken-fight and a literal cliffhanger ensue. The stunts, staged with vigor and a sharp eye for spatial balance by writer-director Christopher McQuarrie, grow wilder as “Fallout” goes on. And, admittedly, they’re a hoot. But, as with all the “M:I”
movies, the heart of the film lies with Cruise, who at 56 refuses to obey the laws of aging, logic or simple gravity. As a superspy with an irritating messiah complex, Cruise brings a work ethic as solid as the movie’s narrative ethic is hectic, conducting an outstanding supporting cast that includes “M:I” veterans Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin. Some of “Fallout’s” most delicious scenes, though, feature Cruise and Vanessa Kirby, who plays a saucy minx of indistinct motivation. What makes “Mission: Impossible” beloved is its playfulness; there are at least two amusing set pieces of misdirection that give “Fallout” extra fizz. Set against some magnificent locales in Paris, London and Kashmir, this is a great-looking example of Hollywood cheese at its most voluptuous and toothsome. Yes, “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” is big, brash and completely nonsensical. But, as someone once sang, that’s entertainment. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Photographer and filmmaker Lauren Greenfield has made a career out of documenting the culture of the commodification of all things — including the human body. Her latest film is a kind of double portrait, one in which she sees herself reflected in the mirror of her work. If “Generation Wealth” has a message that empty acquisitiveness is bad, it delivers it, like the rest of her work, by showing, not telling. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)
‘Love, Cecil’ Unrated, 98 min.
An affectionate documentary portrait of the photographer, compulsive diarist and film and theater designer Cecil Beaton, “Love, Cecil” is largely structured around spoken passages from the subject’s voluminous diaries. Those are read, expressively, by Rupert Everett, who ably channels the persona of the self-described “rabid aesthete.” M.O.

The Teen Titans want to be in a movie in their movie.
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
Heroes’ welcome: ‘Titans’ is a movie for all moviegoers Oh, is “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies” the superhero movie for you. And you. And you, over there, the one who doesn’t like superhero movies. And you in the back who hates Cartoon Network’s “Teen Titans Go!” You with kids, you without kids, you who hates kids (though maybe an evening show would be best for you). The movie we’re now calling “TTG!TTM” is (so far) the funniest movie of the year, the third-best superhero movie of the year (sorry, “Ant-Man”) and the second-best Justice Leagueadjacent movie ever, because we all agree that “Wonder Woman” takes the top spot. DC’s animated film takes the TV show and makes everything bigger, but it keeps the plot simple enough: Robin, the often stick-in-the-mud leader of the Teen Titans, is tired of being considered
a sidekick surrounded by a team of relatively unknown heroes. The one of the bunch that even Titans novices might recognize is Cyborg, who appeared in non-animated form in 2017’s “Justice League.” The others are alien Starfire, the half-demon Raven and the shape-shifting Beast Boy. Robin decides that the only way to be considered a real hero is to get his own movie, since every other hero seems to have one. So off they head to Hollywood. Retaining the TV show’s clever, silly sensibility,

Flight of the Conchords live special to air Oct. 6 on HBO
“TTG!TTM” excels because it hits all levels of superhero fandom. There’s often an irritating discussion about what makes a person a “real” fan of something. Seen all the new “Doctor Who” episodes but never watched the classic ones? Not a real fan. Can’t list the last three comics Geoff Johns wrote? Get out of the comics shop. Too often the measure of a fan is not his or her (usually her) enthusiasm, but knowledge of trivia. With this movie, everyone’s welcome. You don’t need to have seen the show. You don’t need to know who Beast Boy is; they’ll explain it in their song “Go!” — which I desperately want to see get nominated for best original song so I can see it performed at the Oscars. Granted, it WILL help if you can identify Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman on sight, but even that might not be necessary. However, if you DO know your comics to an intense level, there are jokes that only you and one other person in the theater will get. The point of “TTG!TTM” is to have fun — a lot of fun — without any of the gatekeeping that can exist in the world of nerddom. Here the gate is wide open to everyone.

‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’
EXPECTED RELEASE: Dec. 21
EXPECTED RELEASE: May 31
SUMMARY: Kicking butt and taking names is no day at the beach (you know you’re going to see that joke 129 times). It’s brother against half brother when Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) attempts to take his place as king of the ocean. The most unbelievable part of this is there’s a superhero named “Arthur.”
SUMMARY: Fine. We’ll take another Godzilla movie over something — anything — that isn’t a reboot or a sequel. Who needs originality? This is the greatesthits album of giant Japanese monsters; it looks like everybody’s here. Big lizard, big moth, what looks like a bird but might be the moth again. And the whole movie seems to take place in the rain. K.P.K.

“People are homeless, hungry, without health care ... but y’all want me to feel bad for Betsy DeVos because her $40 million yacht was damaged? I don’t think so.”
I cannot express enough how much Hassan’s smile every morning means to me! When I’m in a bad mood and it’s raining and freezing outside, he welcomes me with a wave and tells me to have a great day. Reading Express has become an everyday joy of mine and it starts with Hassan’s kind attitude.
@POLITICALEMILIA, on reports that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ yacht
SeaQuest was untied and set adrift over the weekend. The 163-foot yacht hit a boat dock in Huron, Ohio, sustaining between $5,000 and $10,000 in damages. DeVos didn’t find a lot of sympathy online, especially once people found out her family owns nine other yachts. Police are investigating.

the “new” bases in romantic relationships. Third base is often seen as the most intimate and vulnerable step in a relationship. Twitter users have taken to creating new definitions for the term.

“I think my mom will be distressed to learn that Wall Street types are cribbing her style.” @NBLUNDO, tweeting about a Wall Street Journal article that examined the trend of mostly male employees in the corporate world wearing fleece vests over a nice buttondown shirt. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Spontaneous trips can’t hurt, though Alexis Ohanian told Us Weekly that the most romantic things he does for wife Serena Williams aren’t grand gestures, but “the times when I was just there as a father to our baby, or as a husband.” Ohanian took Williams to Venice, Italy, last weekend for a spontaneous dinner date. “It doesn’t have to be the super extravagant trip to Rome or to Venice for Italy food,” he said. “It just needs to be stepping up and being there.” Ohanian told the outlet that he’s “far from the perfect partner,” but the couple makes the most of their long-distance marriage.
