Aspiring comedian’s career starts (and ends) with a bang

When you finally make ‘fugitive of the week,’ you gotta look good

Authorities in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., arrested a man they said robbed a bank, stripped naked and ran down the street throwing stolen money — a spectacle he told the FBI he hoped would launch his career as a comedian. Alexander Sperber, 35, allegedly made a gun motion with his hand and demanded money from a teller Tuesday. She gave him $4,700 in a bag with a red dye pack. When it exploded on his clothes, he stripped and ran. (AP)

U.S. marshals said they found a New Hampshire “fugitive of the week” tanning in a family member’s backyard. Amy Beth Tremblay, 35, was wanted on bail violation charges after a drug charge and was featured in local media in New Hampshire on July 12. The task force said Wednesday that tipsters reported seeing her working on her tan in Haverhill, Mass. Marshals swooped in to take her back to New Hampshire for a hearing. (AP)

Activists Kwame Rose and Makayla Gilliam-Price appeared alongside director Sonja Sohn on Wednesday at the Television Critics Association’s summer meeting to discuss the documentary, premiering on HBO in November. The film chronicles the passionate feelings on all sides after Gray died a week after suffering a critical spinal injury while in police custody in 2015. He was a 25-year-old arrested for possessing what police described as an illegal switchblade. The city of Baltimore eventually reached a $6.4 million settlement with Gray’s parents. Trump’s trans policy resonates in Virginia LGBT candidate got a $50K donation after the president’s ruling

20K expressline

Danica Roem called President Trump’s ban on transgender people in the military “the height of hypocrisy.”

WEATHER

Winter-like storm set to drench D.C.

“As a transgender person, I find it reprehensible that Delegate Marshall has denigrated the service of transgender Americans who have sacrificed their lives so he can have the freedom to say what he says,” said Roem, who included a fundraising appeal in one of her tweets about Trump’s ban. Roem said she received a $50,000 donation from Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, who chairs the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, after Trump announced the transgender military ban. That is on top of the $150,000 she raised for her bid, including an earlier $35,000 from Abele. “Transgender candidates being as much of a norm as any other citizen is the best way to prevent policies like a ban on anyone, transgender or otherwise, who want to serve defending this country,” Abele said.

A heavy rain event has become increasingly likely for the region Friday through Saturday, possibly lingering into Sunday. Several inches of rain could fall and areas of flooding could develop. Anyone with outdoor plans should begin thinking about a Plan B. This is a very unusual storm system to develop in late July — in some ways resembling a winter Nor’easter. But because it is the middle of summer and the air is much more humid, this storm system will be able to generate significantly more precipitation than a winter storm. Some models predict pockets of 6 to 7 inches of rain. (This is the equivalent of 60 to 70 inches of snow, but winter storms in D.C. won’t ever produce this much because not as much moisture is available when temperatures are colder.)

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA. President’s Trump decision to ban transgender people from serving in the military sparked a wave of condemnation from Democrats and Republicans alike. But the political arena where it resonated perhaps most personally was a state House race in Virginia, where Democrat Danica Roem is looking to make history as the state’s first transgender lawmaker. She is vying to unseat Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, a social conservative who has sponsored a “bathroom bill” and a ban on gays and lesbians from serving in the state’s National Guard. Both pieces of legislation failed. “For our president, who opted out of serving in the military, to attack transgender people for being unfit to serve … is the height of hypocrisy,” said Roem, 32, a former newspaper reporter. “Transgender military members … have done more to serve and protect their country than Donald Trump ever will.” Marshall, a 25-year incumbent in the Prince William County district, said he thought it was prudent to expel and bar transgender people from the military. “The money that would have been spent on costly and risky elective surgeries and decades of synthetic hormones that can

cause cancer, in an effort to change sexual appearance, will be much better spent on treating our combat wounded servicemen and our veterans, and on buying equipment to keep our servicemen safe,” Marshall said. The latest flashpoint in the nation’s culture wars illustrates a bind for Roem. She has said she doesn’t want to be defined as the transgender candidate. As her advisers have urged, she has focused her campaign on local issues, such as Route 28 traffic, jobs and education. But Roem says she can’t stay silent in the face of discrimination that she says sends a message to young transgender people that they are “less than,” or don’t belong. And she says the time Marshall spends trying to pass conservative social legislation is time he should spend addressing local concerns.

House GOP designates $1.6B for border wall

Iran rocket launch raises concerns

GUILLERMO ARIAS (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS The House passed a $788 billion spending bill Thursday that combines a $1.6 billion down payment for President Trump’s controversial border wall with Mexico with a whopping budget increase for the Pentagon. The 235-192 vote both eases a large backlog of unfinished spending bills and gives Trump and his House GOP allies some momentum. However, the measure will meet strong Democratic opposition in the Senate. The measure gives veterans programs a 5 percent increase and funds a 2.4 percent military pay raise. GOP leaders used the popularity of the Pentagon and veterans programs to power through Trump’s border wall. “Every single dime the president requested to start building a wall on our southern border he’s going to get,” said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. “Most importantly, we’re sending more to the VA to fix veterans’ health care and reform outdated VA systems.” Still, a potential government shutdown battle over the U.S.Mexico wall looms with Senate Democrats this fall. The generous defense spending increases also run afoul of strict spending

limits set by an earlier budget law, and there’s been no progress on a bipartisan budget deal that would be a prerequisite for the higher spending to take effect. The House added Trump’s wall funding by a 230-196 procedural vote that denied angry Democrats

an up-or-down vote. The wall gets low marks in public opinion polls and is opposed by many of the GOP’s more moderate lawmakers. Critics say that existing fencing is sufficient, that parts of the border are too remote for crossings, and that tribal law, environmental rules and private property rights have blocked fencing for most of the rest. “Nobody would know it from the president’s hysterical rhetoric, but there are already 700 miles of fence down there on the border — vehicular fencing, pedestrian fencing,” said Rep. David Price, D-N.C. “I know about it because most of that fencing was built when I was chairman of the homeland security appropriations subcommittee.” ANDREW TAYLOR (AP)

Trump’s bomb thrower With scathing language, Scaramucci publicly challenges Priebus to deny he’s a ‘leaker’ WASHINGTONPOST.COM CHECKPOINT

PABLO MARTINEZ MONSIVAIS (AP), AUDE GUERRUCCI-POOL (GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS President Trump’s new communications chief shoved the behind-the-scenes drama at the White House onto center stage Thursday, daring Trump’s chief of staff to publicly deny he’s a “leaker” and exposing the West Wing as a hotbed of internal rifts and conspiracy theories. In a pull-no-punches CNN interview that he said was authorized by Trump, Anthony Scaramucci went after chief of staff Reince Priebus in graphic terms. “The fish stinks from the head down,” Scaramucci said. “I can tell you two fish that don’t stink, and that’s me and the president.” Not even a week into his new job, Scaramucci accused unidentified senior officials of trying to sabotage him. But the personal financial information that he said someone had “leaked” about him had simply been obtained through a public records request. The president’s senior counselor, Kellyanne Conway, also speculated in a Fox News interview that unnamed forces were out to get Scaramucci, saying: “Somebody is trying to get in his way and scare him off.” “There are leaks and then there are people using the press to shiv each other in the ribs,” she said. The past couple of days provided the clearest evidence that New Yorker Scaramucci, who refers to himself as “The Mooch,” and Trump are cut from the same cloth. One of their shared techniques: publicly shaming members of their own team. Scaramucci’s goading of Priebus came as Trump continued to fume publicly and privately about his attorney general. Trump has been critical of Attorney General Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from the Justice Department investigation into whether

aide close to Priebus. Scaramucci then tweeted that someone had illegally leaked financial information about him, conspicuously mentioning Priebus’ Twitter handle. Scaramucci later deleted that tweet. His financial disclosure form wasn’t leaked at all. It was released after a public records request by a Politico reporter. So far, the president has made no move to stop Scaramucci from putting increased pressure on Priebus, according to three White House officials and people close to the president. But a rule of thumb in Trump’s inner circle is that it’s never wise to outshine the president. Ari Fleischer, who served as press secretary under George W. Bush, said, “Ask Steve Bannon what happens if you get too much publicity and go too far. “It reminds me of Icarus flying too close to the sun.” JULIE

The Pentagon has made no change yet to its policy on transgender service members, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer said in a letter Thursday, a day after President Trump sent tweets announcing a total ban on those individuals. “There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President’s direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance,” said Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a written message to the heads of the military branches, as well as commanders and senior enlisted leaders. “In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect,” Dunford, above, wrote in a message first reported by Reuters. “As importantly, given the current fight and the challenges we face, we will all remain focused on accomplishing our assigned missions.” The president’s tweets Wednesday appeared to come as a surprise to the Pentagon, and Defense Secretary James Mattis was on vacation. Pentagon spokeswoman Dana W. White said in a statement Thursday that the Pentagon was “awaiting formal guidance from the White House as a follow-up” to Trump’s announcement.

the president’s campaign had anything to do with Russian interference in the election last fall. “It hasn’t been my best week … for my relationship with the president,” Sessions acknowledged in an interview with The Associated Press. He said he would stay in his post and fight for Trump’s agenda “as long as he sees that as appropriate.” Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker and frequent outside adviser to Trump, said in an interview that Scaramucci’s attacks on Priebus are problematic. “They’ve got to get this sorted out between the two of them, and it would be nice if they didn’t do it in public,” he said. Yet after Scaramucci’s call-in CNN performance, it’s difficult to see how the two could mend fences. “I don’t know if this is repairable or not — that will be up to the president,” he said on air. Scaramucci’s arrival in the West Wing last Friday marked

Leakers will ‘all be fired’ In a vulgar interview published Thursday by The New Yorker, Anthony Scaramucci used expletives to accuse Reince Priebus of being a “paranoid schizophrenic” and White House chief strategist Steve Bannon of performing a sex act upon himself (metaphorically). He also threatened to fire White House staffers who leaked about a dinner he had with the president. “They’ll all be fired by me,” Scaramucci told the magazine. “I fired one guy the other day. … I’ll get to the person who leaked that to you. Reince Priebus — if you want to leak something — he’ll be asked to resign very shortly.” (AP)

Video captured by a bystander at the fair Wednesday evening shows the Fire Ball ride swinging above its bottom platform when a crashing sound is heard. The footage shows one section holding four riders come apart as it swings upward, and at least two people were flipped into the air.

Screams are heard as passengers were thrown to the ground. “Our hearts are heavy for the families of those involved in last night’s tragic accident,” fair officials said in a Thursday post on Twitter. “We have shut down all rides until the state has inspected each and every ride again and deemed them to be safe.” Tyler Jarrell, 18, of Columbus, who died on the midway, was one of several people thrown to the ground when the ride malfunctioned. Those injured range in age from 14 to 42. At least two of the injured were in critical condition Thursday. Officials are investigating what caused the ride to break apart and would not speculate on possible causes.

Without three of their eight opening day starters in the lineup for the past month and beyond, the Nationals have slowed but never stopped. They are on pace for 912 runs. Only 25 teams have scored more in the past 50 years. No Nationals team has ever scored more than 763. They are on pace for 248 home runs. Only six teams in the past 50 years have hit more. “We’re a pretty good team,” said Ryan Zimmerman, who also hit a pair of home runs and is similarly numb to the questions. Meanwhile, Max Scherzer tossed six innings of one-run, three-hit ball, striking out nine and walking one. He had plenty of room to work, although Thursday didn’t rank in the club’s top three offensive showings of the year. They’ve scored more than 15 runs three times this season, and 10 or more runs 18 times. All season, the wrongs have screamed out louder — the troubled bullpen, the injuries, the relative strength of the competition. Thursday, the Nationals’ offense hollered a reminder of what is right, demonstrating clearly why flaws can’t out-yell the foundation. Whatever they aren’t, whatever they might need, they’re also one of the more dominant teams in the National League. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NATIONALS 15, BREWERS 2 With just days until Monday’s trade deadline, relentless noise surrounds the Nationals. Questions about their depth, rumors about deals, theories about their injuries and critiques of their batting order hum at high decibels. But Thursday, thanks to one of the more remarkable offensive innings of the past decade, Washington sent deafening warning shots into the static. Five of them flew well over the Nationals Park walls, tying a major league record for home runs in an inning. During a 15-2 win over the Brewers, the Nationals homered eight times in all. They scored seven runs in the third and six more in the fourth. At 61-39, they own their best record through 100 games since the team moved to Washington. The eight homers tied a franchise record from 1978 and are the most ever for the Nationals. The whole thing amounted to a stunning salvo in which Washington restated its case as the most impressive offensive team in the NL. “What a team we have. What a lineup we have,” said Bryce Harper, who extended a careerhigh 19-game hitting streak with two home runs and four RBIs. His monotone answer showed questions about the lineup’s prowess were hardly new to him. This Nationals offense is not

After an injury-marred 2016, Gray lowered his ERA (3.43) and WHIP (1.175). Under team control through 2019, he’ll command a high price — like Nats prospect Victor Robles.

1 Bryce Harper swats a two-run homer in the first inning, extending his on-base streak to a career-high 27 games. 2 Brian Goodwin hits a two-run blast in the third. 3 Wilmer Difo goes deep after Goodwin. 4 Harper smashes his 27th homer of the year, third-most in the NL as of Thursday afternoon. 5 Ryan Zimmerman makes it four straight. 6 Anthony Rendon ties a career-high with his 21st homer as the Nats tie the MLB record for most homers in an inning (5). 7 Zimmerman smacks a two-run bomb in the fourth, tying Senators slugger Frank Howard for most homers in D.C. baseball history (237). 8 Jose Lobaton belts a two-run homer in the fourth.

Colin Kaepernick

With Flacco hurt, Ravens speculate on Kaepernick Coach Harbaugh says he ‘wouldn’t rule out’ signing outspoken QB NFL Baltimore opened training camp Thursday without Joe Flacco, a development that could lead the Ravens to give Colin Kaepernick a chance to prove he’s still an NFL quarterback. Coach John Harbaugh told reporters in Owings Mills, Md., that he “wouldn’t rule out” signing Kaepernick with Flacco out for at least a week with back soreness. The Ravens’ other quarterbacks are veteran backup Ryan Mallett and Dustin Vaughan, who hasn’t taken an NFL snap.

Harbaugh said Kaepernick, who has remained unsigned after kneeling during the national anthem with the 49ers last year, is a “great guy,” but signing him was “only a speculation” Thursday. “He and I have been talking throughout the summer a number of times,” Harbaugh said. “We had some great conversations on the phone and it’s really been a pleasure to talk to him. … I like history and politics, too.” Baltimore, where Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner,” could be the right spot to end what many people believe is a blacklisting of the quarterback because of perceived fan reaction. Giants owner John Mara said in May he “never received

more emotional mail from people than I did about that issue.” Harbaugh, whose brother Jim coached Kaepernick in San Francisco, never bought into the idea that teams are blackballing Kaepernick, who opted out of his 49ers deal in early March. “I would never use just a generic, stupid term like that to describe a more complicated type of situation,” Harbaugh said in March, when he also pointed out that Baltimore has never been reluctant to employ outspoken players such as Ray Lewis. “Guys speak their mind in Baltimore,” Harbaugh said at the time. “It’s not going to impact how somebody plays.” CINDY BOREN

Lineman retires after 3-year career Something about playing football doesn’t add up anymore for John Urschel, an offensive lineman for the Ravens and doctoral candidate in mathematics at MIT. Urschel, 26, retired Thursday, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. The move came just two days after a new study revealed increasing evidence linking degenerative brain disease to playing in the NFL. Urschel released a statement saying he’s looking forward to studying full-time, and he and his fiancee are expecting their first child in December. After three years in the NFL, the fifthround pick is vested in a league pension plan. (TWP)

Cousins’ goal: Learn when it’s wise to gamble Kirk Cousins said Thursday that his focus heading into his third season as a starting quarterback is to get better at “situational awareness,” knowing when in a game to take risks, for example, and when not to. “You’ve got to go back and look at last season and look at where you can improve,” he said at a news conference on the first day of training camp. The allusion was to the final interception he threw in a season-ending game against the Giants, sealing a loss that kept Washington out of the playoffs. Cousins also said he didn’t think playing the 2016 season under the NFL’s one-year franchise tag affected his performance. Contrary to common perception, he said he didn’t view his decision to play this year under a second tag rather than sign a longer deal as “betting on himself.” “I bet on the system,” Cousins said after the morning’s walkthrough. “I’m just going out and playing. There’s never been anything but positive feelings [toward the Redskins].” Cousins said he’s dealt with yearly pressure since high school, when he had no scholarship offers until late in his final season. “That has been what my whole story is about. I’ve learned that’s the way life is,” he said. “I’m in a good place — a healthy place for me. And it has worked out in the past.” LIZ CLARKE

“If you are serious about adopting, get pre-approved by filling in applications for one or more of these organizations.” Photos from Facebook Pages of: Homeward Trails and Lucky Dog Animal Rescue

TOP NOTCH Animal Rescues in the DMV

he following are rescue organizations in the DMV that do incredible work to find forever homes for homeless or abandoned animals. Most follow the same general process for adoption — an adopter can look online to find a pet they like, submit an application, speak with an adoption coordinator, and arrange a meeting with the pet. Sometimes pet adoptions require home visits or references. If you are unfamiliar with how non-profit rescue organizations operate, note that the whole “doggie in the window” routine has changed. Though some of these organizations do have brick and mortar shelters, most of the animal adoption process takes place online and adoptable pets are often taken care of in foster homes and sometimes local pet stores until they are adopted. There are advantages to considering pets that are living in foster homes.

T

Foster parents can give potential adopters a strong sense for an animal’s disposition. All of these organizations provide amazing resources and remind adopters of the details that must be considered prior to adopting. Most regularly host adoption events at local pet stores and other venues so that potential adopters can meet more than one dog or cat in person at one time and one location. If you are serious about adopting, get pre-approved by filling in applications for one or more of these organizations.

Homeward Trails Location: Serves DC, VA, MD Metro Area, adoption center is located at 11116 Fairfax Station Rd, Fairfax Station, VA 22039; many animals are also in foster homes. HT has dogs, cats, and small animals available for adoption.

They host adoption events all over the DMV and also have a brick and mortar adoption center! They are even hosting a summer camp in Virginia this year.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Location: Primarily a foster based adoption group, Lucky Dog has headquarters in Arlington, VA but this location is an office only. According to their website, “Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is a volunteer-powered nonprofit dedicated to rescuing homeless, neglected, and abandoned animals from certain euthanasia and finding them loving forever homes. We educate the community and all pet parents on responsible pet parenting, including the importance of spay/neuter, obedience training, and good nutrition.” Don’t be fooled, Lucky Dog has both dogs and cats up for adoption.

Humane Rescue Alliance Location: Humane Rescue Alliance serves the DMV and has two brick and mortar adoption centers. One is located at 71 Oglethorpe St NW, Washington, DC 20011 and the other is located at 1201 New York Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002 (DC Animal Control). HRA has dogs, cats, and a decent selection of small animals and exotic pets up for adoption. The alliance is the combination of two of the largest animal rescue organizations in DC.

PetConnect Rescue Location: Though PetConnect is now associated with Muddy Paws Farm (26330 Mullinix Mill Rd, Mt Airy, MD 21771), the farm is not entirely a shelter. The farm is described as PetConnect Rescue’s refuge for homeless dogs on their path to

new, loving forever homes. The organization is primarily a foster based rescue and serves the DMV. Petconnect only has cats and dogs (no small mammals or exotics).

City Dogs Rescue (and City Kitties) Location: City Dog’s administrative office is located at 2121 Decatur Place NW, Unit #3, Washington, DC 20008 Again – primarily a dog and cat rescue, no birds, lizards, snakes, or rodents. This is a foster based rescue.

Petfinder! Petfinder is a great database of pets up for adoption – all you have to do is type in your zip code and the type of pet you are searching for and then start looking. There are always many animals in need of new and loving homes of their own. Happy searching! ■ By Elaina Hundley for Apartment Showcase

‘The Emoji Movie’

A woman’s place to kick ass is in the kitchen.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

It’s not a girl thing: ‘Blonde’ stands (and kicks) apart Holy crap, “Atomic Blonde.” So Charlize Theron plays a British spy whose name I can’t even remember, but that’s OK because it’s not her name that’s important. She goes into Berlin just before the fall of the Wall and meets up with a guy (James McAvoy) whose name also isn’t important. She’s out to solve the mystery of a murdered agent — whom she was more emotionally involved with then she lets on, because of course she was — and recover a list of double agents. She does this mainly by being awesome, in the sense of being both the smartest person in the room and the one most likely to find new and surprising ways to kill someone.

Theron has a cool, icy confidence; the whole movie throbs with the pulse of late’80s Berlin; the fight scenes are as creative as they come. (Director David Leitch shows the skills he picked up as a longtime stunt performer and coordinator. And he’s helming “Deadpool 2,” so GET READY FOR THAT ONE.) In short, “Atomic Blonde” is like a female James Bond movie. Except hold off on that. 2016’s “Ghostbusters” was repeatedly described as “the female ‘Ghostbusters.’ ” The upcoming “Ocean’s Eight” is often described as “the all-female ‘Ocean’s Eight.’ ” On the small screen, we now have our first female Doctor on “Doctor Who.” Obviously, feminine labels are accurate descriptors here, but they’re

also reductive. We no longer describe doctors who are women as “lady doctors,” but there has been and will be discussion of our lady Doctor. When something is set apart and labeled “female,” it reinforces the thinking that “male” is the default and “female” the deviation. 2016’s “Ghostbusters” is almost never referred to as a straight reboot (even though it is one) — but it would have been had the movie featured a cast of all men or the acceptable Hollywood ratio of three men to one woman. Making all of the Ghostbusters women somehow put the film in another category. Calling something the “female version of [X]” implies that it’s something that’s best described by its relationship to the masculine. This is

‘Atomic Blonde’ (R, 115 min.) DIRECTOR: David Leitch STARS: Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman IN A NUTSHELL: A top British agent sent into Berlin to retrieve a priceless dossier must navigate a deadly game of spies. See? We didn’t even mention she’s a woman.

Quincy Jones awarded $9.4 million in unpaid royalties in dispute with Michael Jackson’s estate

problematic: I imagine many women would object to being described as “the female version of a man.” (If you’re a man who can’t imagine that, I invite you to internally describe yourself as “the male version of a woman” and see if that doesn’t bug you just a tiny bit.) It assumes that female-led movies don’t stand on their own; they’re being propped up by their predecessors or the male-led movies they most closely resemble. That isn’t to say that “Atomic Blonde” doesn’t faithfully celebrate some Bondian qualities. Even the story structure — chase-exposition-chasefight-alcohol-chase-fight-sex that’s probably not a good idea-chase-fight-alcoholchase-fight-roll credits — is something 007 would have no problem handling. But “Atomic Blonde” isn’t a spinoff, and it’s not a reboot, and it shouldn’t be described as a female anything, because that implies it’s a version of a male something else. When it comes to “Atomic Blonde,” just call it what it is: absolutely kickass. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

FOCUS FEATURES

PG, 86 min.

Somewhere inside the phone of Alex, a high school freshman navigating his social life, is a world of emoji. A part of that world is Gene, a “meh” symbol who sets out to be multi-expressional. This animated film doesn’t dare go to the depths that a Pixar rendering might, or lean very far into meta-cleverness. Instead, it stays surface level, evoking messages about the importance of friends and being yourself. LINDSEY BAHR (AP)

‘Landline’ R, 96 min.

Jenny Slate teams up again with “Obvious Child” director Gillian Robespierre to tell a story about two daughters (Slate and Abby Quinn) of a dysfunctional couple (Edie Falco and John Turturro) living in ‘90s Manhattan. “Landline” offers viewers a rueful glimpse of a vanished time and place, and along the way, it’s unexpectedly and guffawingly funny. Racism, riots and rage Bigelow’s ‘Detroit’ tells of the city’s civil unrest in 1967, but it’s her timeliest film yet

ANNAPURNA PICTURES

‘Endless Poetry’ has a filmmaker braving his past

FILM REVIEW In “Detroit,” director Kathryn Bigelow refracts the 1967 riots in that eponymous city through the lens of a notorious yet largely forgotten incident: when a group of white police officers tortured and murdered a group of teenagers at the Algiers Motel, then covered it up. Of a piece with Bigelow’s Oscar-winning 2008 drama “The Hurt Locker” and 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty,” the harrowingly intimate “Detroit” rounds out a trilogy of fact-based, fog-of-war interpretive histories. The film first takes viewers into the after-hours club at 12th and Clairmount, where, in the early hours of Sunday, July 23, the Detroit police raided a party

being thrown for a soldier returning from Vietnam. A disturbance then ensued that would lead to five days of fires, looting, mass arrests, savage police brutality and more than 40 deaths, including that of a 4-year-old girl who was mistaken for a sniper by an officer who shot her through a window. That moment is captured with sudden, heart-seizing clarity. Just when the audience thinks “Detroit” will be a “tick-tock” narrative of the mayhem, Bigelow makes a radical shift to the events at the Algiers. The broad, historical contours are these: In an act of teenage bravado, a young man named Carl Cooper (Jason Mitchell) fired a starter pistol out the window of

‘Detroit’ (R, 143 min.) DIRECTOR: Kathryn Bigelow STARS: John Boyega, Will Poulter, Anthony Mackie, Jason Mitchell IN A NUTSHELL: This true story traces a forgotten incident during Detroit’s racially charged 1967 riots where a group of black men were murdered by white police officers.

the motel; police arrived, almost certainly killed Cooper (although accounts varied) and, in an effort to find the gun, proceeded to physically and verbally terrorize a group of young black men and two white girls, resulting in two more deaths. When the film’s third act turns to the story’s appalling

legal aftermath, the questions that have long dogged the 1967 riots — Why did black people burn down their own houses? Why did they loot their own shops? — seem unforgivably naive. “Detroit” flips the usual questions to get at the corrupt heart of white obliviousness: Why has this history been erased for so long? And why does it ring so grievously true today? “Detroit” is an audacious, nervy work, but it also commemorates history, memorializes the dead and invites reflection on the part of the living. In scale, scope and the space it offers for a longawaited moral reckoning, it’s nothing less than monumental. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BLESSINGS

Mahershala Ali has come to save ‘True Detective’

Oscar-winning “Moonlight” actor Mahershala Ali has been cast in Season 3 of HBO’s crime anthology “True Detective.” “I don’t want to give away the storyline, but I really think [the scripts are] terrific,” HBO boss Casey Bloys said at Wednesday’s Television Critics Association press tour after sharing the news. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto confirmed a third season in March despite critics’ mixed reviews of Season 2 in 2015. (EXPRESS) June Foray, eclectic voice actress from “The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show,” died Thursday at age 99

FILM REVIEW Among the fearless, uncertain films from Chilean-born director Alejandro Jodorowsky, “Endless Poetry” is no less dreamlike or strange than the rest. “Poetry,” which recounts the director’s own coming-of-age tale, picks up the story begun in Jodorowsky’s “The Dance of Reality.” As in the 2013 film, the filmmaker’s adult son Brontis plays his abusive father. Opera singer Pamela Flores reprises her role as his mother, Sara, while also portraying Jodorowsky’s older lover, poet Stella Diaz Varin. Jodorowsky himself appears on camera, guiding his younger self as a child and, later, as a young man (played by Jodorowsky’s son Adan). Confronting his own past, Jodorowsky has written a script that tends toward feverish dialogue. In the role of his own father, Adan Jodorowsky asks, “What is the meaning of life?” To which, Jodorowsky, in the role of guide, urgently replies: “Life! The brain asks questions. The heart gives the answers.” In lesser hands, such a platitude would likely land with a maudlin thud. But Jodorowsky sells it with his enthusiasm and uninhibited personality. He shares those qualities with the entire cast. While “Endless Poetry” is far from conventional, it nevertheless manages to translate some of that breathless storytelling into a movie whose images are disturbing but never boring. PAT PADUA (TWP)

‘Ready Player One’

‘Marjorie Prime’ EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 18 (limited)

EXPECTED RELEASE: March 30, 2018

SUMMARY: In the future, people use holograms to kinda-sorta bring back lost loved ones. In some cases those holograms look like Jon Hamm, who plays the computer-simulated dead husband of 86-year-old Marjorie (Lois Smith). It might be creepy to bring back people from the dead, but could we look into doing it for our childhood dogs? KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Steven Spielberg directs this adaptation of Ernest Cline’s beloved sci-fi novel about the uncomfortably close year of 2045. The real world isn’t exactly a great place to be, so people flee to ultra-realistic video games to escape. Our hero lives and plays in the OASIS, which is currently in development by Niantic. K.P.K.

“Cover of Hillary Clinton’s upcoming campaign memoir: Missing a question mark. And a sad face.”

Tony is a bright spot of our morning. He recognizes my family, asks how we are doing, and always has a smile. He’s even been an invaluable resource for SafeTrack information. On the rare days that he’s not there, there’s a noticeable difference.

@IANBREMMER, reacting to the name of Hillary Clinton’s upcoming book on the 2016 campaign, due out Sept. 12. Clinton reportedly writes in the introduction that she’s going to let her “guard down” in the memoir, which chronicles her experience as the first female presidential nominee for a major party in such a wild election year. The blunt title inspired some hot takes on social media. @David_Birney tweeted: “I was hoping the book would be called ‘Dude, where’s my White House.’ “

It’s OK to be nosy.

@GARYROCKROSE, reacting to

a Business Insider story titled, “Millennials are killing the beer industry,” which reported a 1 percent drop in the market share of beer in 2016. Millennials responded with strong feelings. “They seem to forget that industry change is inevitable and no company is guaranteed never-ending increases in profit,” @danidonovan tweeted.

“These new White House interns have something in common but I can’t qwhite put my finger on it.” @THEDWECK, reacting to the photo of President Trump with the White House summer intern class that was released earlier this week. Most of the interns appear to be white, despite the fact that as of 2015, about 44 percent of Americans ages 18-34 were people of color, according the Brookings Institution. “I’m blinded by the diversity,” @MyDaughtersArmy tweeted in jest.

“It’s a match made in ratings heaven, a breathtaking confluence of greed and shamelessness.”

@JAMES_DATOR, tweeting about what he witnessed at the grocery store: a confused man attempting to return diced butternut squash because he bought it thinking it was cubed cheese. The tweeter observed that the package was clearly labeled as squash. His humorous account went viral.

JOANNA ROTHKOPF, writing for jezebel.com about reports that Sean Spicer is being sought for ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” According to the New York Post, the show has reached out to the former press secretary. He “can waltz around questions,” @adamcbest tweeted about Spicer’s qualifications.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Video posted by ABC News shows Bieber getting into a large pickup truck with a crowd of photographers around him.
