A $350,000 fire truck delivered last month to a Snyder, Texas, department went up in flames during a test drive to check the brakes. Fire Chief Perry Westmoreland said the new pumper truck was destroyed Thursday in Abilene. He said the rig was at a dealer for warranty work when a mechanic and driver took it out to evaluate the brakes. They heard a boom, got out and saw a rear tire on fire.

No cash? No problem. Austin, Texas, is launching a pilot program to let fans digitally tip musicians.

The Austin American-Statesman reports the city is providing 10 artists with a DipJar, a device that enables fans to tip musicians at shows using a credit or debit card. The artists will test the technology for six months. Officials say they hope the program will help local musicians and the city, which draws visitors thanks in part to its music scene. (AP)

Earlier this month, an officer at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Indianapolis went to heat up his McChicken when he found someone had bitten his sandwich. “I know I didn’t eat it,” the cop told WTHR-TV at the time. Both McDonald’s and the sheriff’s office launched investigations. On Friday, police found the culprit was not an employee messing with police. Instead, the cop simply forgot he’d already taken a bite of the McChicken. (TWP)

Success is sweeter together THE DISTRICT The line was alphabetical — but if it hadn’t been, Danielle and Stephen Corbin would have found a way to stand together anyway.

The couple had already weathered so much: periods of homelessness, joblessness and hopelessness. Moments when the homework load at Goodwill Excel Center, an adult public charter high school in D.C., seemed overwhelming, especially on top of their full-time jobs.

Now, Danielle, 40, and Stephen, 33, were numbers 10 and 11 in line in the Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University. The husband-and-wife duo graduated — both with honors — on July 19.

The Goodwill Excel Center is one of several such schools operated by the nonprofit Goodwill Industries across the country. Students who complete the program receive industry-recognized credentials and full high school diplomas. The Foggy Bottom institution is the first and only adult education charter school

Neither of the Corbins thought they would ever be here. Stephen said he was an “outcast” in school, and picked up “a nasty habit” of stealing cars. He quit high school at 16 and spent most of his teenage years in juvenile detention.

Danielle dropped out of high school at age 17 after getting pregnant with her first child. She snagged jobs at McDonald’s and Burger King and found employment as a security guard.

At 20, she got pregnant again,

“We got a lot of nieces and nephews and godchildren that look up to us, and you cannot only preach about it, you have to live it.”

which she thought “pretty much ended the idea of school.”

Both Corbins underwent periods of homelessness. Danielle recalled living in a van with her two children. Stephen spoke of nights spent “on the streets, begging for change.”

Things got better when the two met about 17 years ago. In 2013, they married, and in 2017, they went back to school after hearing about the Goodwill Excel Center from a friend.

They teamed up to get through the program. When Stephen had to skip school for work, Danielle caught him up on what he missed.

And they helped each other with homework, holding marathon study sessions in their bedroom.

“I couldn’t believe I finally did it,” Danielle said of her graduation. “That whole day, I was just thanking God for the opportunity to go back to school.”

They have already begun planning for the future. Danielle has applied to college and wants to get a degree in early childhood development. Stephen, meanwhile, hopes to become a truck driver. Whatever happens, there is one certainty: The Corbins will face it as a unit.

Baltimore sniping continues Trump doubles down on derogatory tweets as backlash intensifies

BALTIMORE The Rev. Al Sharpton on Monday lambasted President Trump for his attacks on Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and the majorityblack district he represents, calling Trump’s remarks “bigoted and racist.”

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, R, in a separate radio interview, said the president’s comments describing Baltimore as a “rodent infested mess” were “outrageous and inappropriate.” But he didn’t call them racist.

Sharpton, a longtime civil rights leader and MSNBC talk show host who spoke at a news conference in Baltimore with former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, R, said Trump “has a particular venom for blacks and people of color.”

“He attacks Nancy Pelosi, he attacks Chuck Schumer, he attacks other whites — but he never said their districts or their states are places that no human being wants to live,” Sharpton said.

Trump sparked widespread outrage Saturday when he questioned why “so much money” is sent to Cummings’ district, which includes parts of Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard counties. Trump described Maryland’s largest city as a “very dangerous & filthy place.” On Monday, he lashed out at Sharpton, describing him as “a con man,” “troublemaker” and someone who “Hates

Cummings’ House committee has been holding hearings critical of Trump administration practices. His district has sections with high poverty and crime, as well as more affluent areas.

Democrats, some Republicans and many Maryland residents have widely condemned Trump for denigrating a historic, mostly black American city.

Del. Cheryl Glenn, D-Baltimore City, the immediate past president of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, said Monday that Trump’s tweets are a “smoke bomb to cause distractions” as he seeks reelection.

Steele, a former Republican National Committee chairman who was Maryland’s first black

lieutenant governor, asked the president to visit Baltimore to see the “hard work and commitment” of the city’s residents.

Hogan received some criticism over the weekend for his initially muted response to Trump’s tweets. On Monday, he directly criticized Trump on “The C4 Show” on Baltimore’s WBAL radio station.

“You can’t find another Republican governor in America that has been more critical of the president,” Hogan told host Clarence Mitchell IV. But Hogan focused most of his remarks in the interview not on Trump, but on “angry rants back and forth.” He said the Twitter firestorm does little to solve the problems in Baltimore.

“Let’s stop the tweeting and get to work,” he said.

Hogan said the state has taken steps to improve the impoverished areas of Baltimore, including dedicating state law enforcement to help local police fight crime. He called on both Trump and Cummings to provide the federal assistance the city needs.

But Hogan has been widely criticized by Democratic officials for policy stances they say have hurt Baltimore, including his decision in 2015 to cancel a long-planned $2.9 billion Red Line light rail project that he said was too costly. A man who had packed a missile launcher in his checked bags was stopped Monday by authorities at Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport. The resident of Jacksonville, Texas, an active-duty military officer returning from Kuwait, told officers he wanted the launcher as a souvenir. Officials gave the item to the state fire marshal for safe disposal. The man was permitted to catch the next flight. (TWP)

D.C. Public Service Commission begins effort to determine cause of Saturday power outage

POLITICS House Republicans have scheduled their yearly policy retreat for a downtown Baltimore hotel in September, according to two senior Republicans familiar with plans.

The news comes after President Trump on Saturday called Baltimore a “very dangerous & filthy place” and suggested that Democratic politicians, including Rep. Elijah Cummings, above, had made the city all but uninhabitable.

Sitting presidents customarily speak each year at their party’s House retreat.

The Marriott Waterfront is not in Cummings’ district, though just barely — it is four blocks inside the edge of Democrat John Sarbanes’ circuitous 3rd District in Baltimore’s Harbor East neighborhood.

The GOP retreat was originally scheduled for the remote Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., in late January, but Republican leaders postponed it because of the then-pending government shutdown.

Baltimore has been a frequent destination for both parties’ legislative retreats. Republicans last held their retreat in the same Marriott in 2016.

Lawmakers and congressional staffers are fond of Baltimore for retreats because of its proximity to D.C., as well as its tourism options for family members who sometimes join them.

Academics, lawmakers, dignitaries and President Trump will gather in Virginia this week for events celebrating the beginnings of American democracy. Today marks the 400th anniversary of the first representative legislative assembly in the Western Hemisphere at Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in North America. The first General Assembly meeting, which took place at a church in Jamestown, laid the foundation for American representative government. Today’s Virginia General Assembly is considered North America’s oldest continuously operating legislative body. Today’s events are part of a yearlong commemoration meant to honor the state’s colonial history.

Event organizers say descendants of Jamestown colonists and Virginia Indians will be in attendance, along with members of Congress — including Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine — state lawmakers and dignitaries from other states. On Friday, a White House spokesman confirmed earlier reports that President Trump will also be attending.

Special events open to the public are planned around Jamestown.

Lawmakers and other guests will gather at historic Jamestown today to commemorate the meeting of the burgesses. Gov. Ralph Northam is scheduled to give an address at an early-morning event. President Trump is expected to attend a second event that will be private but livestreamed online.

When word broke earlier in the month that Trump was expected to be in attendance, some Democratic lawmakers threatened to boycott the event. Organizers released a statement noting that Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were invited last year by Democratic and Republican state leaders. Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax has said he will break with fellow Democrats and attend.

Program for teens ends THE DISTRICT Kendall Bryan was beginning another day at the summer jobs program he directed in Northeast D.C. a couple of weeks ago when two city officials arrived for what he thought was an unscheduled tour.

The officials told him that they were shutting down his taxpayerfunded program and that its enrollees — 100 teens and young adults — would be reassigned to other organizations.

In the preceding days, the parents of two youths alleged that Bryan made “inappropriate” remarks on two occasions while running his organization, the Amy Jacques Garvey Institute.

The institute, named for the wife of civil rights activist Marcus Garvey, has since 2007 provided summer jobs for predominantly black teenagers and young adults who live east of the Anacostia River.

In one incident, a youth described as the institute’s “only non-African American” enrollee became uncomfortable after Bryan said the summer program was “important” in addressing “the concerns of black youth in

His language, according to the agency’s letter, violated the D.C. Human Rights Act, “which prohibits discrimination based

on race,” among other things.

Bryan was also accused of using “profane and inappropriate” language while interacting with young people, according to the employment services agency.

Bryan, 37, whose summer program received $250,000 from

the District from 2015 to 2018 and was to receive an additional $45,000 this year, dismissed the allegations as “poppycock.”

He said no one interviewed him about the complaints before closing his program.

“Any notion that I’m racist is disgusting,” he said. “I will not allow anyone to characterize me as verbally abusing youth.”

Forty years ago, Mayor Marion Barry, D, established the summer youth employment program to help teenagers find jobs. As part of the $20 million program, enrollees at the Garvey Institute and hundreds of other participating organizations receive hourly wages between $5.25 and $14; they range from 14 to 24 years old.

After officials closed the institute, the program’s enrollees abruptly found themselves reassigned by the Department of Employment Services to other summer jobs programs.

Several conservative Republicans on a congressional district committee tried and failed on Saturday to reprimand U.S. Rep. Denver Riggleman, R-Va., for officiating a same-sex marriage this month, The Roanoke Times reported. The committee chairman knocked down the proposal. Critics of Riggleman argued at the meeting that he didn’t adhere to the party’s position on marriage, according to The Roanoke Times. (EXPRESS)

Eight Virginia airports are set to receive more than $13 million in federal grant money to improve infrastructure. U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine made the announcement late last week. The recipient of the largest grant is the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport, which will receive about $3.7 million to expand an apron, where aircraft are parked. The Danville Regional Airport will get $3.6 million for the same purpose. (AP)

Kofi Annan, president of the Fairfax County chapter since 2016, announced Sunday that he will resign.

“While many NAACP members are dedicated to promoting equity, unfortunately I no longer believe the overall organizational culture of the NAACP prioritizes this goal,” Annan wrote on Facebook, calling the organization a “rubber stamp” for priorities of elected officials.

“I’ve grown increasingly frustrated and disillusioned by this over time which has made it difficult for me to carry on,” he wrote. “And yes my recent confrontation with the former branch president is linked with this.”

Annan attacked former chapter leader Shirley Ginwright via text after she said he’s too confrontational with police.

“It’s bootlickin a-- n---as like you that make the black community disrespect the NAACP,” Annan wrote to Ginwright, whose lawyer sent a letter ordering Annan to stop contacting her. Annan later apologized.

India’s tiger population roars back

GILROY, CALIF. Authorities on Monday were searching for answers to why a 19-year-old opened fire on a popular food festival less than a mile from his parents’ home in California, killing two children and another man.

Santino William Legan, 19, cut through a fence and appeared to randomly target people with an “assault-type rifle” Sunday afternoon, the end of the threeday Gilroy Garlic Festival that attracts about 100,000 people to the city known as the “Garlic Capital of the World,” Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said.

Police responded in less than a minute, and Legan turned his “AK-47-type” gun on the officers, Smithee said. Three officers fired back and killed Legan, who legally purchased the weapon in Nevada this month.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of the officers who were able to engage this guy as quickly as they did,” the police chief said. “We had thousands of people there. It could have gone so much worse so fast. … There absolutely would have been more bloodshed.”

Legan’s motive wasn’t known, Smithee said. Legan posted two photos on Instagram not long before the attack, which also injured j 12 other p people. p

Three killed, including two children, in Sunday shooting at food festival

FBI officials survey the scene Monday, the day after a deadly shooting at a Gilroy, Calif., food festival left three people dead, including two children.

One photo depicted Smokey the Bear in front of a “fire danger” sign, with a caption that said to read the 19th-century book “Might Is Right,” a work that claims race determines behavior and is popular among white nationalists and far-right extremist groups.

Legan’s since-deleted Instagram account says he is Italian and Iranian. Minutes before the shooting, he had posted a photo from the festival saying, “Ayyy garlic festival time” and “come get wasted on overpriced [stuff].”

The festival in the agricultural city of 50,000 about 80 miles southeast of San Francisco had security that required people to

pass through metal detectors and have their bags searched.

The shooting killed 6-year-old Stephen Romero, a 13-year-old girl and recent college graduate Trevor Irby, who was in his 20s, authorities and family said.

“My son had his whole life to live, and he was only 6,” Alberto Romero told San Francisco Bay Area news station KNTV. “That’s all I can say.”

Officials didn’t release the name of the girl who died. The wounded were taken to multiple hospitals, and their conditions ranged from fair to critical, with some undergoing surgery.

At least five have been released.

India’s tiger population has grown to nearly 3,000, making the country one of the safest habitats for the endangered animals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the tiger count for 2018 on Monday and said it’s a “historic achievement” for India, whose big cat population had dwindled to 1,400 about 14 to 15 years ago. India estimates its tiger population every four years. Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said the tiger population was 2,226 in the last count, in 2014.

POLITICS The woman who is supposed to replace Puerto Rico’s embattled governor announced Sunday that she doesn’t want the job. Justice Secretary Wanda Vázquez tweeted that she hopes Gov. Ricardo Rosselló will appoint a secretary of state before he resigns on Aug. 2.

Former Secretary of State Luis Rivera Marín would have been next in line as governor, according to the U.S. territory’s constitution. But he is one of more than a dozen officials who have resigned in recent weeks since someone leaked an obscenity-laced chat between Rosselló and close advisers.

Rosselló announced last week that he would resign after nearly two weeks of massive protests.

Vázquez’s notice creates a chaotic scenario about who will be Puerto Rico’s next leader.

If Rosselló’s choice for a secretary of state is not approved by the island’s House and Senate, Puerto Rico’s law dictates the treasury secretary would be next in line if the justice secretary doesn’t become governor.

But current Treasury Secretary Francisco Parés is too young, at 31 years old. The constitution dictates the person would have to be at least 35, so that would leave interim Education Secretary Eligio Hernández next in line.

“This is crazy,” said political expert Mario Negrón Portillo.

An Italian judge says one of the two American teenagers jailed in Rome in the slaying of a police officer has stated he stabbed the plainclothes officer because he feared he was being strangled, according to a court order. Finnegan Lee Elder told authorities he stabbed Carabinieri officer Mario Cerciello Rega after he felt pressure on his neck, the judge wrote. At least 52 killed in violent clashes at a Brazil prison ALTAMIRA, BRAZIL At least 52 prisoners were killed by other inmates during clashes between organized crime groups at the Altamira prison in northern Brazil on Monday, according to prison officials.

Para state prison authorities said 16 of the victims were decapitated, while others were asphyxiated.

The count of victims potentially could rise when authorities have searched all areas involved, state prisons chief Jarbas Vasconcelos said at a news conference.

Prison authorities said a fight erupted around 7 a.m. between the Rio de Janeiro-based Comando Vermelho and another group, Comando Classe A. “Leaders of the [Comando Classe A] set fire to a cell belonging to one of the prison’s pavilions, where members of the [Comando Vermelho] were located,” the statement read.

Vasconcelos said the fire had spread rapidly, with inmates held in old container units that had been adapted while another building is under construction.

The fire prevented police forces from entering the building for about five hours, he said.

Two prison staff members were held hostage, but eventually released.

Prison authorities said they were still trying to determine who were the leaders behind Monday’s attack, and those men will be transferred to federal prisons.

The killings echoed those of 55 inmates who died in a series of riots in May in several prisons in the neighboring state of Amazonas.

ECONOMY There’s little dispute that the Federal Reserve this week will do something it hasn’t done since 2008, when the U.S. economy was gripped by the Great Recession: Cut its benchmark interest rate.

This time, by contrast, the economy is solid by most measures. Consumers are spending and unemployment is close to a half-century low.

Yet the Fed, under Chairman Jerome Powell, has signaled that rising economic pressures — notably from President Trump’s trade wars and from a global slowdown — have become cause for concern. So has an inflation rate that remains chronically below the Fed’s target level.

So the Fed has decided that a rate cut now — and possibly one or more additional cuts to follow — could help inoculate the economy against a potential downturn. The idea is that lowering its key short-term rate, which can affect consumer and

An Afghan soldier shot and killed two American service members in Afghanistan, U.S. officials said Monday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak on the record about details that have not yet been made public.

U.S. Central Command confirmed that two U.S. troops were killed, but provided no details. It said additional information is being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete. According to officials, the Afghan soldier was wounded and is in custody. Never-Googlers unite TECHNOLOGY In the small South Carolina town of Newberry, Bob’s Red Mill muesli cereal is hard to come by.

That presents a challenge for resident Gregory Kelly, who can’t get enough of the stuff.

He’d rather not truck the 40 miles to Columbia to stock up on it, but he’s also loath to buy it from the company’s website, which he says is riddled with tracking software from Google. His privacy being paramount, he grudgingly heads into Columbia every so often.

“I’m just not sure why Google needs to know what breakfast cereal I eat,” the 51-year-old said.

Kelly is one of a hearty few who are taking the ultimate step to keep their files and online life safe from prying eyes: turning off Google entirely. That means eschewing some of the most popular services on the web, including Gmail, Google search, Google Maps, the Chrome browser, Android mobile operating software and even YouTube.

Such never-Googlers are pushing friends and family to give up the search and advertising titan, while others are taking to social media to get word out. Online guides have sprouted up to help consumers untangle themselves from Google.

These intrepid web users say they’d rather deal with daily inconveniences than give up more of their data. That means setting up permanent vacation responders on Gmail and telling friends to resend files or video links that don’t require Google software.

More than that, it takes a lot of discipline.

People like Kelly are trying to build barriers to Google and other tech giants largely due to increasing concerns about massive data collection. A series of privacy scandals showing how

these companies collect and use consumer data has raised alarm bells for many people about how much they’ve traded for customization and targeted ads. For example, a Washington Post investigation last month found more than 11,000 requests for tracking cookies in just one week of web use on Google’s Chrome browser.

As a result, more consumers are taking measures to wrest greater control of their personal data, like deleting Facebook and its photo-sharing app Instagram.

Is tracking necessary?

There’s some evidence that closely tracking people’s online behavior may not provide the business boost that tech companies tout. A recent study by academics at three U.S. universities who observed millions of transactions at a large media company over the course of a week found that behavioral targeting only amounts to 4% more revenue than when tracking is not enabled through online “cookies,” software that records browsing activity.

That suggests that companies like Google and Facebook could easily absorb the lost revenue if they were less meticulous about tracking consumers. (TWP)

Brands are jumping on the trend, advertising what they say are superior privacy controls.

At the CES 2019 tech conference earlier this year, Apple promised in a billboard above Las Vegas that “What Happens on Your iPhone, Stays on Your iPhone,” though many apps siphon data from the phones and track users. And DuckDuckGo, a privacy-oriented search engine, said daily average searches have grown to 42.4 million, from 23.5 million a year earlier — although still a fraction of Google’s.

Some academics say that efforts to abandon the use of Google — or Amazon and Microsoft, for that matter — are nearly impossible. Those companies all have cloud services businesses, or essentially data centers that other companies can rent, and they power most websites, as well as other consumer services. For example, Amazon’s web services business enables Netflix, while Google helps power Snapchat and Target.

“The reality is, you’re going to use these services whether intentionally or not,” said Jonathan Mayer, an assistant professor of computer science at Princeton University. “It is exceedingly hard to control the data flows of these companies.”

Over the past few months, Jim Lantz, of Spokane, Wash., has been systematically eliminating Google products from his online life, spurred by reports of how the Silicon Valley company collects and distributes customer data.

“It’s quite the challenge figuring out what they own,” said the wholesale sales manager. “I don’t want to give up every ounce of myself over to Google. At least I can make it hard for them.”

SCIENCE Forget “Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup.”

The first review by scientists of wild animals found by customers in prepackaged produce makes clear that frogs are the trouble, and bagged lettuce and spinach are, by and large, their preferred medium.

While 21 of the 40 reported incursions under review involved amphibians, it is also the unfortunate case that rodents, snakes, lizards, birds and even a bat found their way into bagged lettuces, spinach and cut green beans.

Also, not all of these interlopers were deceased: According to the review by four animal science researchers, published recently in the journal Science of the Total Environment, eight frogs, a toad and a lizard were found alive.

Only 27.5% of the intruders reported were found in organic produce. The majority, 72.5%, were found in conventionally grown crops, flouting the notion that pesticides, herbicides and fungicides at least keep our food free of creatures.

The researchers acknowledge that their methodology — they combed through online media reports — means the study isn’t comprehensive. Still, this is probably as good a look at the problem as we’ll get; companies aren’t transparent about incidents like this, largely because they don’t have to be, the researchers write.

Nats waiting to patch up roster holes As the trade deadline looms, teams wait for someone else to make the first moves NATIONALS If any manager is fit to welcome new players in July, on the door step of a pennant chase, it’s Dave Martinez.

Martinez, now leading the Nationals, was traded constantly. In 2000 alone, when he was 35 and in the twilight of his career, he was moved three times in one season, from Tampa Bay to Chicago in May, then to Texas in June, and finally to Toronto in August.

“You look at my kids today and they thought it was the best summer ever,” Martinez said Saturday. “They got to go everywhere. My oldest son said, ‘This is great. Look at all the cities we’ve been to.’ ” If the Nationals strike a deal in the next few days — with Wednesday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline quickly approaching — Martinez will relate to whoever walks into their clubhouse, bag in hand, life turned upside down by business.

But as of Monday morning, with a three-game series against the Braves looming, Washington was an empty-handed buyer in a slow-drip market. There is only one chance to deal this season, with no waiver period in August.

Sellers are holding out, clubs are still choosing a direction, and the whole sport waits.

“It’s a later-developing trade market,” said Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo two weeks ago. That’s still true.

Rizzo’s Nationals, atop the NL wild-card standings and entering Monday night 51/2 games behind the Braves, have shown they’re worth an investment. They really need a reliever, or two, to patch up a bullpen that is unreliable at its best, unusable at its worst. They could use another starter, with Max Scherzer still sidelined and the other options — Erick Fedde, Joe Ross, Kyle McGowin, Austin Voth — not clicking.

What time to work out?

Exercise is always good for you, but the benefits can vary based on when you do it EXERCISE Some people are morning exercisers, for whom an early run or swim is as much a part of their wake-up ritual as coffee. Others prefer a nighttime workout to rid themselves of the day’s stress.

Does it make a difference?

Several recent studies suggest that it does. But it’s complicated.

One recent paper indicates that morning exercise may activate certain genes in the muscle cells, boosting their ability to metabolize sugar and fat.

An evening workout, on the other hand, uses less oxygen, making workouts more efficient and improving athletic performance, potentially a boon for serious competitors.

“Human exercise performance is better in the evening compared to the morning, as [athletes] consume less oxygen, that is, they use less energy, for the same intensity of exercise in the evening versus the morning,” says Gad Asher, a researcher at

the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. “For example, if a person needs to go for a run, he will reach exhaustion earlier in the morning compared to the evening.”

Asher’s group put mice on treadmills at different times of day and studied their exercise capacity. They found that overall exercise performance was vastly better — about 50% on average — during the “mouse evening,” compared with the morning hours. They also studied 12 humans and saw similar results.

A second group led by Paolo Sassone-Corsi, director of the Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism at the University of California at Irvine, also put mice on treadmills, but took a different approach.

The researchers looked at the changes in muscle tissues after morning workouts, specifically the glucose breakdown and fat burning. They found that exercise seemed to provide the most

HBO stays high on fantasy TELEVISION A “Game of Thrones” prequel series just wrapped filming in Belfast. An impressive 137 Emmy nominations last week can’t be a bad thing. But alert viewers nevertheless sense HBO is changing before our eyes.

Since AT&T acquired HBO’s parent company, Time Warner, last year for $85 billion, the network has increased its overall hours of original programming by more than a third, expanding into Monday nights with “Chernobyl,” “Gentleman Jack” and “Years and Years.” As WarnerMedia prepares to launch a streaming service (dubbed HBO MAX to capitalize on the brand) to compete with Netflix, Disney+, et al., some longtime executives have departed.

HBO’s chief of programing, Casey Bloys, told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., that more HBO doesn’t mean less quality.

“The big challenge was to make sure that by doing [more] we aren’t just filling hours to fill hours,” Bloys said. “In the first half of 2019, we have a lot more programming and there’s not one show that we have aired that I wouldn’t have aired, you know, two years ago or five years ago.”

The big question HBO viewers always have is what’s next.

“Game of Thrones” is done.

“Veep” is done. There’s no such thing as a “Chernobyl 2.”

HBO’s upcoming slate features the comic book adaptation “Watchmen,” starring Regina King, top, and the fantasy series “His Dark Materials,” starring Dafne Keen, as the network embraces genre-heavy programming.

Fantasy seems to be the network’s ongoing obsession, with two big shows this fall built around complicated multiverse sagas. In October, the network will premiere creator Damon Lindelof’s divergent take on “Watchmen,” the cult-hit comic book from the 1980s.

Critics saw “Watchmen’s” pilot episode last week. Suffice to

say, Lindelof (known for “Lost” and “The Leftovers”) has taken “Watchmen’s” concept and aesthetic in a surprising and even topically risky direction that, among other things, involves the 1921 Tulsa race massacre and the rise of vigilante white supremacists in a parallel-reality America of 2019. Oscar and Emmy winner Regina King stars.

Lindelof, who is by now accustomed to viewers taking issue with his creative choices, said he’s pleased with his “Watchmen,” but he expects some will reject it.

“You can only self-identify as a fan [of the original ‘Watchmen’ comics] and write this stuff for yourself, to some degree, and then hope that it connects with other people,” he said. “But if your intention is for everyone to love it, you’re not going to be able to do this job.”

HBO’s other lavish fantasy offering (co-produced with the BBC) is “His Dark Materials,” based on author Philip Pullman’s trilogy of young-adult novels set in a parallel world where animals are manifestations of human souls and a heroic 12-year-old girl named Lyra (Dafne Keen) uncovers a plot involving stolen children. The show, which premieres in November, also stars James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

If HBO is in danger of nerding out to an extreme, maybe Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman could return for a third season of “Big Little Lies”?

Don’t count on it, Bloys said.

“To me, on the face of it, there’s no obvious place [for the story] to go,” he said. “That said, if [the actors] all came to me and said, ‘We have the greatest take: Listen to this,’ I would certainly be open to it. Who knows? It just doesn’t feel like it, but I’m certainly open.”

‘Chances Are …’ is a reflection on retrospection BOOK REVIEW “Chances Are …,” Richard Russo’s novel released today, opens with a cascade of charm. Three old friends, all 66 years old, arrive at Martha’s Vineyard. Russo introduces them one at a time, setting each man in a nest of youthful anecdotes that have been polished to a high luster.

But if this is a story steeped in nostalgia, it’s also a story about the inevitable disruption of nostalgia.

Russo, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his 2001 novel, “Empire Falls,” has become our senior correspondent on masculinity.

The three men at the center of “Chances Are …” were classmates at a small Connecticut college in the late ’60s and early ’70s and, one way or another, they all managed to stay out of the Vietnam War. But the resin of their lives was set in that turbulent era, hardening into the cherished amber of friendship. As must always be the case, the years have worn these old friends differently.

Now 70, Russo knows the pleasures and perils of retrospection, and he’s constructed a novel about the way the past constantly bleeds into the present. “Chances Are …” is best when it focuses on that tantalizing interplay of past and present, the insistent way that adolescent experiences and parental expectations continue to circumscribe our hopes and dreams.
