A Stratham, N.H., police officer says the kitten he was trying to catch turned out to be a bobcat, which jumped on the roof of a Burger King. Officer Matt Callahan was on patrol Saturday and saw the “kitten” run under a car, then climb a tree near the restaurant. Once Callahan realized it was a young bobcat, he called wildlife officers. He stood in the drive-thru line to alert customers in case the bobcat came down, but it went onto the roof for a nap. (AP)
Swiss authorities have called off the hunt for an alligator-like reptile in an inland lake. A fisherman spotted the 5-foot caiman in Lake Hallwil on July 14, when it surfaced and ate a duck. Police said the caiman is likely an abandoned pet. Spokesman Bernhard Graser said Tuesday that searches have been called off: “He isn’t doing any harm; it’s like a kangaroo roaming around freely here. A mini-golf course has been installed in Rochester Cathedral, a medieval house of worship southeast of London. The course features nine holes designed like bridges. It’s intended to teach young people about engineering and also has spiritual overtones. The Rev. Centenarian finds art in words THE DISTRICT Sarah Yerkes was in her 90s when a friend invited her to try something new. A graduate of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Yerkes had had decades-long careers: first as a landscape architect using brick and stone, then as a sculptor creating abstract works in wood and steel. But as she aged, sculpting had become physically challenging. A fellow resident at Ingleside at Rock Creek, the D.C. retirement community where she lives, had started taking a poetry writing class, so Yerkes joined, too. Last month, at age 101, she released her first collection of poems, “Days of Blue and Flame,” published by Passager Books at the University of Baltimore. The book is the latest iteration of a creative mind that has worked with form and style for the better part of a century. “I really feel like the good fairies were standing over my cradle, giving me the oomph to create,” Yerkes said. Former architect and sculptor publishes first poetry at the age of 101
Sarah Yerkes worked for decades as a landscape architect and as a sculptor. She took up poetry after moving into a D.C. retirement community.
Yerkes was raised in Cleveland and educated as an architect. She fell into landscape design after winning a contest. Sculpting came to her decades later, after she was in her 50s and newly married to her second husband, architect David Yerkes. She worked as a sculptor
into her early 80s, when she and her husband moved to Ingleside. T he p o et r y work sh op’s teacher, Bonnie Naradzay, said she was struck by the way Yerkes would run with prompts. “I realized what a lively and intuitive mind she has — or should I say, imaginative,” Naradzay
said. “She said it was kind of like doing a sculpture.” For Yerkes, her poems explored feelings she learned to repress growing up in, as she put it, “a WASPy society.” Some of the feelings Yerkes wrote about had not been shared with even her close family members. “I was just writing for me. I didn’t think of it being in the public domain or that anyone would be interested,” she said. Yerkes’ son Amos Satterlee, 66, said his mother’s venture into poetry has been a journey into a more emotional place. “She came up in the Bauhaus modern aesthetic environment, which was fundamentally very intellectual. … Going from that into the sculpture and now into the poetry, it’s a journey into emotion.” The poem that perhaps best reflects Yerkes’ multidimensional artistic trajectory is “Quilts and Verses.” In it, she recalls a country butcher’s mother, who would hoard patches of colored cloth, saving them for patchwork quilts. “Both verse and quilt need reasons to survive — / expressions of a message, a design,” she wrote. “Creators all will find that in them, curled / a valued insight waits to be unfurled.” TARA BAHRAMPOUR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

DC RIDER It was only about 5 p.m. last Tuesday. But at Mackie’s Bar & Grill in Alexandria, it felt like late at night, just after a bar closes, as bartenders and regulars linger over stories. Only a couple of customers were at the bar — a more common occurrence than usual during Metro’s summer-long shutdown of the King Street-Old Town station, which has reduced attendance at several nearby businesses. Steve Garcia, the bartender, and Sang Lee, the owner, discussed what it feels like to be “Sanged.” It means finding yourself in a challenge you didn’t know you couldn’t win. Recently, Lee challenged Garcia to eat 25 pancakes. The challenge was set for 8 p.m. But Lee ordered pancakes at 4:30 p.m., “so by 8, they’re like frisbees,” Garcia said. “You didn’t say I couldn’t do that,” interjected Lee, a former attorney who opened the restaurant three years ago. “I started feeling it around 15,” Garcia continued. “The problem was, these things were like rubber. The back of my jaw just wouldn’t allow me to chew anymore.” Laughter filled the bar as the pair reminisced. But Lee’s smile turned to worry when conversation shifted to the shutdown of the Metro station, one of six on the Blue and Yellow lines south of Reagan National Airport closed for repairs until Sept. 8. The shutdown has Lee himself feeling “Sanged.” “There’s a lot of things I have to take care of and I don’t know where I’m going to get the money from,” he said. Business has slowed there, and for others in Old Town. A June 14 to 18 survey by the city

and several business groups, including Visit Alexandria, found that a little more than a third of businesses closer to the King Street station were making less money than they did last summer. Mackie’s stopped serving lunch shortly after the shutdown started, when fewer tourists were stopping by. And Lee had to lay off the lunch staff. full as well. In brighter spirits at Vola’s Dockside Grill was co-owner Scott Shaw, as he sat overlooking Alexandria’s waterfront, roughly a 25-minute walk from the closed station. In that area, according to the survey, 83% of waterfront businesses were doing at least as well since the shutdown, and 59% were doing better, likely helped by an ongoing park renovation. “Over the last year or two, there’s been an injection of new fresh things to do that’s drawing a younger crowd,” he said. Sales at the restaurant were up more than 10% over last summer, said Shaw. He’s seeing both sides of the shutdown’s impact. Shaw’s restaurant group also owns Joe Theismann’s Restaurant, almost across the street from King Street station. Business there has dropped off almost 15% year over year. But with the waterfront businesses doing well, he took the opportunity during the shutdown to close portions of Theismann’s for renovations. Must be nice, said Lee. “I don’t have multiple restaurants. He can spread the pain,” Lee said. “What do I do?” As he spoke, Lee sat in a nook by the front. The staff calls it the Ruby Lounge in honor of Lee’s redbone coonhound, Ruby. Lee was heartbroken when she died three years ago. The restaurant, meanwhile, is named after his wife’s maiden name. “The bar, its name, our image, our reputation means something,” he said. “It does. It means something. Metro implores Md. to release $56M in funds TRANSPORTATION Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld has asked Maryland to immediately release $56 million that the state has withheld in a funding dispute, saying the transit agency is making “a good-faith effort” to address the state’s complaints. Wiedefeld, above, also warned that Maryland’s action risked hurting Metro’s credit rating, which would increase its borrowing costs. Virginia officials and Maryland lawmakers also expressed concern that the withholding of funds would damage Metro. But the administration of Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, R, remains in disagreement with Metro over the issue, officials said. Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn has accused the transit agency of “stonewalling” on audits and failing to account for money it spends. “We are not close to where we need to be, but we are talking,” said a Maryland official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We are encouraged that they seem to be taking this seriously.” The disagreement has arisen partly because of what Metro officials admit are financial mistakes the agency has made previously, and failures to provide adequate information to its three funding jurisdictions. local D.C. mayor terminated contract with university after 14 years of care THE DISTRICT All 13 members of the D.C. Council are calling on Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, to reconsider her administration’s decision to end a disabilities services contract with Georgetown University, a rare show of unity among the city’s lawmakers on an issue that advocates for disabled people say has far-reaching consequences. The Monday letter comes after
dozens of advocates and disabled people protested the move by the D.C. Department on Disability Services at a hearing last week. It asks that Bowser “reexamine” the decision of the department’s director, Andrew Reese, not to renew the contract with Georgetown’s Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. It also assails a transition plan Reese has released, saying the department has created “a patchwork system of care” to replace vital services Georgetown offers for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Last week, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Wayne Turnage said the Bowser administration stands by Reese. Georgetown’s 14-year-old partnership with D.C. is on track to lapse at the end of August. A team of medical professionals and social workers provides a range of services for approximately $1.4 million annually, such as helping hospital patients obtain care and discharge services and offering guidance for new parents. University officials say the initiative serves about 800 disabled people per year.

XINJIANG, CHINA Officials from China’s northwestern Xinjiang region said Tuesday that most of the people detained in the area’s contentious reeducation centers have been moved out of the facilities and have signed “work contracts” with local companies, but those assertions have been challenged by accounts from Uighurs and Kazakhs who say their relatives remain missing. The U.S., human rights groups and independent analysts estimate that about 1 million Muslims have been arbitrarily detained in Xinjiang’s heavily guarded internment camps, which the Chinese government calls vocational training centers. The Xinjiang region is home to an estimated 12 million Uighurs, Kazakhs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities who have long reported persecution at the hands of the Han Chinese, the country’s ethnic majority. In recent years, Xinjiang has been blanketed with high-tech surveillance cameras and police checkpoints that single out Uighurs for identification checks. Former detainees and their family members have said in interviews with The Associated Press that the reeducation centers resembled prisons where they were forced to renounce their faith and swear loyalty to China’s ruling Communist o Party. They

said they were subject to repeated political indoctrination and often did not understand why they were being held in the facilities. Traveling abroad, speaking to relatives in other countries and growing a long beard are all acts that might land someone in detention, according to Uighurs and Kazakhs who have fled the region. Shohrat Zakir, Xinjiang’s Uighur governor, declined at a news briefing to give a figure for those he described as “students” inside the centers. He defended the facilities as an effective and “pioneering” approach to counterterrorism. “Most of the graduates from the vocational training centers have been reintegrated
into society,” Zakir said. “More than 90% of the graduates have found satisfactory jobs with good incomes.” Uighurs and Kazakhs outside China, however, continue to appeal to foreign governments to help them locate their relatives still inside Xinjiang. Many say they have not been able to contact their loved ones for years, and they fear the worst. Some told the AP that some detainees were released from the camps only to be forced into factory jobs. They were taken to a government office and handed labor contracts for six months to five years in a distant factory, which they were required to sign, according to one detainee
who spoke on the condition of anonymity, fearing reprisal. Xinjiang Vice Chairman Alken Tuniaz said accounts of mistreatment in the camps were concocted by a few countries and media outlets. The centers protected people’s liberties by allowing them to “request time off” and “regularly go home,” Tuniaz said. While the people inside the centers are not permitted to practice their religion during their “period of study,” they can resume activities related to their faith when they are at home. The fight to save the seas from plastic waste may mean the end for mini bottles of shampoo and other toiletries. InterContinental Hotels Group, with a portfolio that includes more than 5,600 hotels, said Tuesday it will start offering toiletries in bulk-size dispensers at all its properties by 2021 in an effort to reduce plastic waste. ACLU: Families still being split at border New court filing alleges separations continue despite 2018 order IMMIGRATION Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union told a federal judge Tuesday that the Trump administration has taken nearly 1,000 migrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border since the judge ordered the U.S. government to curtail the practice over a year ago. In a lengthy court filing in U.S. District Court in San Diego, lawyers wrote that one migrant lost his daughter because a U.S. Border Patrol agent claimed that he had failed to change the girl’s diaper. Another migrant lost his child because of a conviction on a malicious destruction of property charge with alleged damage of $5. One father, who lawyers say has a speech impediment, was separated from his 4-year-old son because he could not clearly answer Customs and Border Protection agents’ questions. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan has said that family separations remain “extraordinarily rare” and occur only when the adults pose a risk to the child. Of tens of thousands of children taken into custody at the border this year, 911 children were separated since the June

Abundance of ‘wealth’ jobs in U.S.
DHS warns that small planes are open to hacks
ECONOMY Ken McNamee, a private chef, has cooked in exclusive clubs around the world. Yet he still sometimes finds himself overwhelmed by the scale of riches he comes across. On a visit to a potential client at a home on Seattle’s Lake Washington, McNamee encountered an indoor pool, two kitchens, a dumbwaiter and a trove of artwork. “That,” he said, “was one of the only times I’ve been awed.” A rising number of American workers may be feeling nearly as dazzled on the job. One of the fastest-growing job categories of the past decade has been in what David Autor, an economics professor at MIT, calls “wealth work”: catering to the whims and desires of affluent households. The trend has coincided with the longest U.S. expansion on record, which surpassed the decade mark this month. That streak of growth — and the surging stock market gains that accompanied it — has left the richest households with a greater proportion of America’s wealth than before the Great Recession began in 2007. By contrast, just 2% of the increased wealth has gone to the bottom half of the population. Most “wealth work” jobs aren’t quite as glamorous as McNamee’s. But they’re growing fast. The number of massage therapist jobs has more than doubled in the past decade. So have manicurists and pedicurists.
TECHNOLOGY The Department of Homeland Security issued a security alert Tuesday for small planes, warning that modern flight systems are vulnerable to hacking if someone manages to gain physical access to the aircraft. An alert from the DHS critical infrastructure computer emergency response team recommends that plane owners ensure they restrict unauthorized physical access to their aircraft until the industry develops safeguards to address the issue, which was discovered by a Boston-based cybersecurity company and reported to the federal government. Most airports have security in place to restrict unauthorized access and there is no evidence that anyone has exploited the vulnerability. But a DHS official told The Associated Press that the agency independently confirmed the security flaw with outside partners and a national research laboratory, and decided it was necessary to issue the warning. The cybersecurity firm, Rapid7, found that an attacker could potentially disrupt electronic messages transmitted across a small plane’s network, for example by attaching a small device to its wiring, that would affect aircraft systems. Engine readings, compass data, altitude and other readings “could all be manipulated to provide false measurements to the pilot,” according to the DHS alert. TAMI ABDOLLAH (AP)
The number of private chefs has quintupled. A category that mostly consists of jobs walking and grooming dogs is up 60%. Yet economists note that most so-called wealth jobs don’t benefit workers or the economy as much as traditional employment does. Most wealth workers are self-employed and so lack employer-provided health insurance, retirement plans and other benefits. They often earn relatively low wages, and their incomes tend to fluctuate depending on how many clients they have. Nor do they have many opportunities to learn new skills, undergo advanced training or move up a career ladder. For that reason, the increased prevalence of wealth jobs — and of contractors and gig workers like Uber drivers — may be a cautionary sign for an economy that appears relatively healthy by most measures. “They contribute to this jittery, anxious moment,” said Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. “It’s a boom that also feels precarious.” Still, wealth workers have often had little choice. As middleskill positions have been lost to automation or offshoring, some who lost those jobs have turned to wealth occupations instead. In data analyzed exclusively for The Associated Press, Muro calculates that there were 3.2 million wealth worker jobs in

A growing job sector The McKinsey Global Institute projects that massage therapist jobs will surge 88% by 2030. Dietitians and nutritionists are forecast to jump by about half. Landscape architect jobs will increase by a third, the institute projects. The main driver of growth in these jobs is the expansion of the upper-middle class. TECHNOLOGY Capital One, the Virginia-based bank with a popular credit card business, announced Monday that a hacker had accessed about 106 million credit card applications, and investigators say thousands of Social Security and bank account numbers were also taken. The FBI has arrested a Seattlearea woman, Paige A. Thompson, on a charge of computer fraud and abuse, according to court records. The hack appears to be one of the largest data breaches ever
to hit a financial services firm. In 2017, the credit-reporting company Equifax disclosed that hackers had stolen the personal information of 147 million people. Last week, it reached a $700 million settlement with U.S. regulators over that breach. “While I am grateful that the perpetrator has been caught, I am deeply sorry for what has happened,” said Richard D. Fairbank, Capital One’s chairman and chief executive. “I sincerely apologize for the understandable worry this incident must be causing those affected and I am committed to making it right.” The hack is expected to cost the company between $100 million and $150 million in the near term, Capital One said.
A Seattle-area woman has been charged in connection with a massive data breach at Capital One.
In announcing the data breach, Capital One emphasized that no credit card numbers or log-in credentials were compromised,
nor were the vast majority of Social Security numbers on the affected applications. It is unusual in a major hacking case for a suspect to be apprehended so quickly, and in this case, that was apparently due to boasts made online. Thompson, who authorities say used the name “erratic” in online conversations, is suspected of “exfiltrating and stealing information, including credit card applications and other documents, from Capital One,” according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court. Temperatures have been above average across Alaska every day since April 25. None of the nearly 300 weather stations in the state have recorded a temperature below freezing since June 28, the longest such streak in at least 100 years. On Independence Day, the temperature at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport hit 90 degrees for the first time on record. It comes as no surprise that the Last Frontier is about to round out not only its warmest July but also its warmest month on record. “Usually, if you were to break this sort of record, you’d do it by a sliver of a degree,” said Brian Brettschneider, a climatologist and research associate at the International Arctic Research Center. He said the state is on course to shatter the record by more than a degree. Brettschneider said the combination of relentless high pressure, extremely warm sea surface temperatures related to early sea ice melt and high humidity are leading to numbers “basically off the charts.” The month also looks to be Alaska’s most humid on record. “Even the dew points are in record territory,” explained Brettschneider. “Anchorage hit their all-time highest dew point at 65 degrees.” At that level, the air begins to feel humid, like it would during an early summer day in D.C. The Redskins and holdout left tackle Trent Williams desperately need each other. The situation reads like a soap opera promo. “Will Trent forgive the doctors? Are the Redskins willing to love another? Stay tuned for the same daily storyline over the next few weeks in ‘As the Redskins Turn.’ ” Williams reportedly wants more money, but he doesn’t want to look greedy. So there’s an alternate explanation circulating: He’s upset with team doctors over a tumor on his head that he had removed in April. The team captain hasn’t spoken publicly, and the team says reports of irreconcilable differences are “100% false.” But how can the Redskins go forward when they don’t want to pay an aging, oft-injured player — but also the protector of their passer — more money? If it’s about money, then Washington can guarantee Williams’ salary for the next two seasons. The Redskins could dump Williams next season for
only $2 million in dead salary cap and save $15 million. He’s missed 16 games to injuries since 2014 and turns 32 years old next season. Those aren’t prime numbers entering 2020 free agency, even for a seventime Pro Bowler. Guaranteeing his salary shows good faith by the Redskins, who frankly don’t want to have to use a high draft pick on a left tackle any time soon. Washington could include incentives over games played. But the Redskins can’t just tear up a deal that was top dollar when it was signed in 2016, nor can they extend one when Williams’ health is so uncertain. If the problem is personal and Williams just doesn’t want play for the Redskins, they should trade him in the next month if another team loses a starting tackle to injury. Forget a first-round pick — a second- and fourth-round pick are more likely. With Donald Penn expected to sign a one-year deal and few other options, the 36-year-old will likely be the frontrunner to replace Williams. Maybe some team needs one

Women’s national soccer team coach Jill Ellis is stepping down after leading the United States to back-to-back World Cup titles. Ellis, a native of England whose father was inducted into the Virginia-DC Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007, played at Fairfax’s Robinson Secondary and William & Mary. She has been coach of the team since 2014, through 127 matches with 102 wins. Her contract was set to expire following this year’s World Cup with a mutual option to extend it through the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Ellis will remain with the team for a World Cup victory tour, which kicks off Saturday with a match against Ireland at the Rose Bowl. Knowing no trappings Blanco Brown’s genre-blending dance track ‘The Git Up’ is the latest country rap hit MUSIC After “Old Town Road” kicked off a trend of country-trap this year, Blanco Brown felt the timing was just right for his dance hit “The Git Up.” Brown, who grew up in Atlanta, has been living in both musical worlds his entire life. His mom played him OutKast and Jodeci, but he’d spend summers with his aunt in rural Butler, Ga., where he’d hear mostly Johnny Cash and Tim McGraw. “Later on when I was about 23, 24, I started recording country records,” says Brown, 34. “And my friends would tell me, ‘Man, you’re black. You know you can’t do no country records.’ ” Brown kept working on his combination of hip-hop and
country, which he likes to call “trailer trap,” while also writing songs and working ‘The Git Up’ as a producer Blanco Brown for Grammywinning acts like Fergie and Monica. His music caught the attention of BBR Music Group, a Nashvillebased record label, which put out his self-titled EP in May. “The Git Up” now sits at No. 1 on Billboard’s country songs chart. The song, which is up to No. 14 on the all-genre Hot 100 chart, went viral — like Lil Nas X’s country rap hit “Old Town Road” — on the social media app TikTok, where people have re-created Brown’s dance moves

or added their own, and tagged it to #TheGitUpChallenge. Brown says “Old Town Road,” which just broke a Billboard record with its 17th consecutive week on top of the Hot 100 chart, opened a lot of people’s ears to the music he’s been passionate about.
“People heard that record and they were just looking for something close to it,” Brown says. “The whole time I had been building my sound and I was like, ‘It’s in the same vein.’ So that just gave me like a sense of, ‘OK, there is an appetite for this.’ ” While “The Git Up” is popular online, Brown’s label has only recently made an official push to get the song played on country radio. Brown says that music fans are a lot more open to new sounds and mixing of genres than ever before. “You hear it at the club. Rising star Cuco shows dark side Love songs may be known for their traditionally jovial tone, but on Cuco’s fulllength debut, he gives his love ballads a darker tone. “Para Mi,” which came out Friday, has lighter moments and a chilled-out hip-hop vibe, but it is Cuco’s searing, often darker imagery that leaves an impression. The 21-yearold Southern California artist has landed himself between indie pop and G-funk hip-hop with his relaxed and psychedelic album. Darker imagery in “Far Away From Home” is cushioned with synthesizers, fuzzy electric guitar, angelic whirling and chimes that flutter in the background as Cuco sings, “I’m rotting in the image of my head.” In “Ego Death in Thailand,” the music is spacey, ambient and sunny. TV REVIEW As long as her fans have known her, we have understood Mindy Kaling to be passionately addicted to rom-coms — the good ones, the cheesy ones and, for our purposes here, the British ones, particularly a classic trio of films written by Richard Curtis: “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Notting Hill” and “Love Actually.” Kaling loves them so much that she is now trying to replicate their unmistakable vibe. Curtis’ romcom style invites us into a strain of British lifestyle that can be soothingly escapist. Even if you do not like those movies, it is difficult to resist their gooey allure. And harder still to copy, as co-creators Kaling and Matt Warburton unfortunately demonstrate in Hulu’s lethargic “Four Weddings and a Funeral” limited series (premiering with four episodes today). The mood they are going for in this poorly conceived and surprisingly clumsy version eludes their grasp. Even the spark Kaling and Warburton brought to “The Mindy Project” is in short supply here. This “Four Weddings and a Funeral” bears little to no

resemblance to the movie or its plot, except for the fact that it is set in London and draws its meaning from the obvious: We live, we die and some of us get married in between. Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei to “Game of Thrones” fans) stars as Maya, a political staffer having an affair with her U.S. senator boss. When that situation goes predictably wrong, Maya seeks refuge in London, where three of her American besties from college have made lives for themselves: aspiring novelist Duffy (John Reynolds); successful investment banker Craig (Brandon Mychal Smith); and
Maya’s best friend, Ainsley (Rebecca Rittenhouse), a boutique owner who is engaged to marry Craig’s co-worker, a Londoner named Kash (Nikesh Patel). But Maya has already (and unwittingly) met Kash, in a moment of mutual attraction at Heathrow Airport. Now it’s awkward. But the show never depicts awkwardness in the right way.
