A Michigan man has launched a horse-and-buggy ride-hailing service. WWMT-TV reports Timothy Hochstedler dubs his business “Amish Uber.” But it might more accurately be called a taxi, as customers must flag him down. A sign on his buggy reads, “Amish Horse & Buggy Rides $5,” and he offers trips around the town of Colon. Hochstedler says he enjoys conversations with customers, and his horse is friendly — “a people’s horse.” (AP)

The pair went missing from their retirement home in Dithmarscher and were found 25 miles away at Wacken Open Air, a multi-day festival near Hamburg. The men were located “disoriented and dazed” at Wacken at 3 a.m. Saturday, police said. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Will it be love at first sniff? THE DISTRICT It’s summer in Washington, so no one smells all that great. But on a recent Thursday night, I was self-conscious about my smell in a way I’d never been before. I was about to enter a pheromone party, where strangers would be inhaling my scent via a T-shirt I’d been wearing. “It’s a lovely experience to not visually judge someone — to smell someone before you see them,” said Amy Morse, who organized the pheromone party with Pakke, a new D.C. arts organization she co-founded. As soon as I’d signed up, instructions arrived: I was to sleep in the same clean, white T-shirt for four nights to capture my pheromones, and bring that shirt to the party. Pheromones are chemicals that mammals secrete from our cheeks, hands, neck, scalps, armpits and other more intimate spots. Scientists have studied whether, by sniffing someone’s sweaty T-shirt, we might be able

to detect a good genetic match. The science of pheromone-based attraction, however, is far from certain. Once inside, I pulled a number out of a basket (No.1!), and labeled my zip-top bag. An event organizer took my Polaroid picture, which I placed on a wall next to a Post-it note where I would mark the numbers of the shirts whose scents I found pleasing. Partygoers were also encouraged to inhale pheromones
“The way in which we choose mates right now is haphazard. ... Why is it more ridiculous based on the way they smell?” AMY MORSE, who organized a pheromone party with Pakke, a D.C. arts organization she co-founded
straight from the source. A projection screen lowered, and Sadaf Lotfalian, a clinical psychologist in training, gave a lecture on the science of pheromones and instructed us to ask for consent before going up to someone and sniffing behind their ears. When I looked at my own sniffing notes from the T-shirts — cotton and cigarettes; chocolate; BO; lavender; summer camp; Doritos — I realized I paid more attention to what a shirt smelled like than how that aroma made me feel. I realized that what we smell often takes a back seat to whatever we’re seeing or hearing, and the gathering was a bit of sensory overload. I was interested in finding the men who’d marked down my number. I located one, tapped him on the shoulder and announced myself as No. 1. “No. 1? I love No. 1!” he replied. Sniffing strangers’ shirts reminded him of being curled up with a lover in bed the next morning after a night spent together, once any artificial scents had faded. “That’s what these shirts reminded me of — that raw sense of a person,” he said. A bipartisan statehood push THE DISTRICT Progressive Democrats outside of D.C. have become the newest foot soldiers in the city’s fight for statehood, excited by the notion that if D.C. became the 51st state, it would mean additional Democratic votes in Congress. Dan Pfeiffer, former aide to President Barack Obama, is promoting statehood on his “Pod Save America” podcast as a top priority if Democrats take back Congress and defeat President Trump in 2020. But some local elected officials and activists are loath to frame statehood as a partisan issue. “There is nothing that I think disturbs me more than people presuming what our would-be senators would do,” said Beverly Perry, a top adviser to Mayor Muriel Bowser who oversees the administration’s bipartisan strategy for statehood, in an interview earlier in the year. “That’s unfair to our residents to assume that our would-be senators would be on any side of the aisle or would take any particular position.” Bowser jump-started statehood efforts after taking office in 2015, spearheading a new plan to form what local officials call “the state of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth” with the approval of Congress and the president. Those hopes were dashed in 2016 when statehood supporter Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election and Republicans maintained control of the House and Senate.

Now, Bowser has launched a new, nearly $1 million campaign to build support in 10 states that have bipartisan congressional delegations and represent different regions of the country. The targets include Washington (the one that’s actually a state), Alaska, Maine, New Hampshire, Georgia, South Carolina, New Mexico, Arizona, Indiana and Illinois. The Bowser administration has hired Rachel Williams, a digital marketer who previously worked at Google, for a $90,000-a-year job managing the campaign. “We are looking to do some digital marketing,” Williams said in a phone interview from Los Angeles, where she was pitching statehood at the National Conference of State Legislatures convention. “We can engage new audiences

filled with “target actions” such as visits to upcoming conferences and developing a mobile app. Cementing Democratic power is nowhere on the agenda. “We really don’t see anything we are trying to do as unfair or biased in any way,” Williams said. Others worry partisan rhetoric can undermine their cause. “I get the political opportunism by Democrats,” said Josh Burch, the founder of the grassroots Neighbors United for D.C. Statehood. “But at the same time, this is something fundamentally deeper than which party we belong to: Whether we deserve the same rights, no matter what initial is by our names, when we go to vote.” FENIT NIRAPPIL(THE WASHINGTON POST)

local Discovery leads to fear that nearby homeless could be harmed THE DISTRICT D.C. officials have halted plans to tear down a building located near the city’s main shelter for homeless families on the D.C. General Hospital campus, after testing showed elevated levels of lead around the soon-to-be-razed structure. Workers are continuing demolition inside the building, despite complaints by lawmakers and
advocates who say Mayor Muriel Bowser is endangering children by doing the work before families have been relocated. The delay in external demolition, announced over the weekend, is the latest snag for Bowser’s plan to shut down the dilapidated mega-shelter in October and house families in new facilities spread out across the city. The first batch of smaller shelters are scheduled to open this fall, after construction delays. Hillis-Carnes, an engineering firm hired by the city, discovered lead above the acceptable level

That site was reanalyzed days later and didn’t have elevated levels of lead. FENIT NIRAPPIL AND PETER JAMISON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

11 dead, 70 hurt in spate of shootings in Chicago Weekend of violence is politicized as Giuliani blames Democrats CHICAGO At least 11 people were shot to death and about 70 wounded in a weekend burst of violence in Chicago that instantly became a political issue when President Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, blamed the carnage on longtime Democratic rule in the city. Police on Monday attributed the dozens of shootings to gangs, the illegal flow of guns and sweltering August heat that drew more people outside. The victims ranged in age from 11 to 63, according to police. One teenage girl died after being shot in the face. A teenage boy was

fatally shot riding a bike Sunday. Other shootings took place at a block party and a funeral. Even for Chicagoans all too accustomed to violence in parts of the city, the weekend stood out. By way of comparison, at least seven people were killed and 32 wounded during the long Memorial Day weekend, the Chicago Tribune reported. “Our souls are burdened,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. “It is unacceptable to happen in any neighborhood of Chicago.” Echoing comments that Trump has made about Chicago, Giuliani blamed Emanuel — President Barack Obama’s White House chief of staff — and decades of “one party Democratic rule” in tweets on Sunday and Monday. The ex-New York mayor also
tweeted his support for Chicago mayoral candidate and ex-Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, calling him a “policing genius.” McCarthy plans to run next February against Emanuel, who fired McCarthy in 2015 after the release of dashcam video showing a white police officer kill a black teen by shooting him 16 times. Most of the shootings happened in poor neighborhoods on the West and South Sides where gangs are entrenched, said Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson. Johnson said homicides are down by 20 percent from last year. But he said gang members and others arrested on gun charges aren’t dealt with harshly enough. “It is the same people who are pulling the triggers,” he said.
Churches around the world are now using electronic methods to take donations, as people are increasingly less likely to carry cash on them. The technologies vary from apps to physical screens. Hundreds of U.S. churches have installed kiosks where the faithful can swipe a card to donate. The Church of England has adopted contactless card readers, which can be passed around the pews like the traditional offerings plate, at 16,000 religious sites. The innovations seem to be paying off — because electronic donations tend to be worth more than the small change in people’s pockets. (AP)

Algae may have killed a whale shark
A dead whale shark that washed up at Sanibel Island in Florida last month tested positive for brevetoxin, a neurotoxin created by a harmful algae called Karenia brevis. It would be the first known instance of a whale shark being killed by algal blooms. (TWP) At least two people killed, up to 70 injured in gas truck explosion on an Italian highway

nation+world Star witness says he committed crimes, lied at Manafort’s behest
ALEXANDRIA Rick Gates — the star witness against President Trump’s excampaign manager — admitted in federal court Monday that he committed a host of crimes with his former boss, and confessed to stealing from him and others. Gates catalogued years of crimes, saying most of his wrongdoing was committed on behalf of his former boss, Paul Manafort, while other crimes were for his own benefit. Gates also made clear he was testifying against Manafort in the hopes of receiving a lesser prison
sentence, having pleaded guilty in February as part of a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller. Prosecutor Greg Andres asked Gates, “Did you commit crimes with Mr. Manafort?” “Yes,” Gates responded. Presented with a copy of the plea agreement he signed, Gates said he conspired with Manafort to falsify Manafort’s tax returns. When asked why he had lied, Gates said he had done so at Manafort’s request. Gates said he and Manafort had 15 foreign accounts they did not report to the federal government, and they knew it was illegal. “Mr. Manafort directed me” to not report those accounts, Gates testified.

Rick Gates is testifying against Paul Manafort as part of a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller.
Gates also said Manafort had directed him to report money wired from his foreign bank accounts as loans, rather than
as income, to reduce Manafort’s taxable income. Repeatedly, Gates insisted that most of his crimes were committed at Manafort’s explicit instruction. At one point, he rattled off the names of a dozen overseas companies he said Manafort controlled; on prompting from prosecutors he identified three more. The money in them “came from income from political consulting in Ukraine,” he said. Gates said he was also stealing from Manafort. He testified that he had control over some of the Cyprus bank accounts, and created phony bills to siphon off hundreds of thousands of dollars. RACHEL WEINER, MATT ZAPOTOSKY,

BUSINESS With Indra Nooyi exiting PepsiCo as its longtime chief executive, the circle of CEOs in the Fortune 500 is losing one of its highestprofile women. Nooyi, who was born in India, is a rarity on Wall Street as a woman and a minority leading a Fortune 500 company. She oversaw PepsiCo during a turbulent time in the industry that has forced food giants including Coca-Cola Co., Campbell Soup Co. and Oreo maker Mondelez International Inc. to adapt to changing tastes. Within the industry, Nooyi is the latest female chief executive to step down, following Mondelez CEO Irene Rosenfeld last year and Campbell CEO Denise Morrison earlier this year. Nooyi, 62, has been with PepsiCo for 24 years and held the top job for 12. Another PepsiCo veteran, Ramon Laguarta, will take over as chief executive in October, the company said Monday. Nooyi will remain as chairwoman until early next year. “Growing up in India, I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary company,” Nooyi said in a statement Monday. The percentage of female CEOs in the Fortune 500 has climbed slowly over the years and broke the 5 percent mark just last year, according to Catalyst. nation+world A glut of luxury units in many places has caused high-end rents to drop, as rents for lower-income people continue to rise.
Boom comes at a price
Surge in luxury construction has led to rents falling for the rich but rising for the poor
REAL ESTATE U.S. cities struggling with soaring housing costs have found some success in lowering rents this year, but that relief has not reached the renters most at risk of losing their housing. Nationally, the pace of rent increases is beginning to slow, with the average rent in at least six cities falling since last summer, according to Zillow data. But the decline is being driven primarily by decreasing prices for high-end rentals. People in low-end housing — the apartments and other units that house working-class residents — are still paying more than ever. Since last summer, rents have fallen for the highest earners but increased for the poorest in San Francisco, Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver, Pittsburgh, Portland, Ore., and Washington, D.C., among others. The ongoing increase in prices for low-end renters poses a challenge for city officials who have vowed to lower housing costs for working-class residents already struggling with tepid wage growth in the U.S. economy. City officials have said that
a boom in luxury housing construction would cause rents to fall for everyone else, arguing that creating new units for those at the top would ease competition for cheaper properties. In part based on that theory, cities have approved thousands of new luxury units over the past several years, hoping to check high rents that have led more than 20 million American renters to be classified as “cost burdened,” defined as spending more than 30 percent of one’s income on housing. Although some advocates say the dividends could still pay off for low-income renters, others say more direct government action is needed to prevent poor residents from being forced out of their cities or into homelessness. “For-profit developers have predominantly built for the luxury and higher end of the market, leaving a glut of overpriced apartments in some cities,” said Diane Yentel, president and chief executive of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, an advocacy group. “Some decisionmakers believed this would ‘filter down’ to the lowest-income
D.C.’s rental rates Holding to the axiom that a person shouldn’t put more than 30 percent of wages toward housing costs, a report released earlier this year by the National Low Income Housing Coalition found that to afford a two-bedroom home in D.C., renters would have to earn $34.48 per hour on average. That’s nearly five times the federal minimum wage and more than 2.5 times the District’s minimum wage of $13.25 per hour. The report said Virginia renters would need to earn about $23.69 per hour to afford a two-bedroom rental unit in the state, while Maryland residents would need $29.04. (TWP)
people, but it clearly will not meet their needs.” Poorer city residents have experienced significant rent increases recently. In Portland, average rents for the poor have risen from about $1,100 to $1,600 — or by more than 40 percent — since 2011. In San Francisco, the average rent at the bottom of the market has soared from $1,700 to $2,600, a nearly 50 percent increase. Nationwide, rents

Protracted battles have occurred in city halls nationwide over the size and makeup of urban communities, often pitting longtime homeowners trying to preserve the value of their properties against developers seeking to profit from the high demand. Mayors have been caught in the middle, aiming to accommodate an influx of new residents who help boost the local economy without displacing those who have lived in their cities for decades. The result has been a range of policy measures, including reforming zoning codes to encourage more development, creating new tools to finance affordable housing projects and rules mandating that developers include affordable units in their properties. These measures have shown some signs of reducing rents, for both the rich and, to a lesser extent, the middle class. For renters in the middle third of the income distribution, average rental prices have remained virtually unchanged since last summer, according to the Zillow data. JEFF STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Apple, others pull the plug on Alex Jones TECHNOLOGY Apple, Facebook, YouTube and Spotify have taken major steps to penalize conspiracy theorist and right-wing talk show host Alex Jones for violating their hate speech policies. Late Sunday, Apple stripped the majority of podcasts published by Jones’ website Infowars from iTunes and its podcast apps. “Apple does not tolerate hate speech, and we have clear guidelines,” the company said in a statement to The Washington Post. “Podcasts that violate these guidelines are removed from our directory.” Other platforms, including Spotify, Facebook and YouTube, previously had removed some of his content, but Apple’s move was the most sweeping yet. In a series of text messages to The Washington Post, Alex Jones called the decisions to remove him “a counter-strike against the global awakening.” He accused Apple and Google of colluding with the Chinese government, mainstream news organizations, the Democratic Party and establishment elements of the Republican Party to misrepresent his views and deprive him of platforms to spread his messages. “You’re on the wrong side of history mainstream media,” Jones said in a text to The Post. “You sold the country out, and now you’re going to pay for it.” HAMZA SHABAN, CRAIG TIMBERG AND ISAAC STANLEY-BECKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Bryce Harper has been more relaxed and productive since being assured he wouldn’t be traded.

Happy to be here: Harper heats up for Nats’ last stand Bryce Harper doubled home the eventual game-winning run in the Nationals’ 2-1 victory over the Reds on Sunday afternoon, then afterward he sat quiet and alone at his locker, in no hurry, comfortable, gathering his gear. Nobody came to interview him. The Nats had just won for the eighth time in 11 games and the fifth time in six games since general manager Mike Rizzo said a week ago that, “Bryce is not going anywhere. I believe in this team.” Since the All-Star break, Harper has driven in 14 runs in 15 games and hit .367. Since Rizzo took the trade-deadline worries off Harper’s shoulders — he is more relaxed and
hitting to all fields, as he does when he is hottest. If, somehow, the Nats reach the playoffs this year, plenty of the reason will be that Harper strongly resembles his best self and is happy he is still here. Harper doesn’t hide emotion well — or even try. If, somehow, Harper ends up staying in Washington after this season, part of the reason will be his old-shoe comfort in his Nats world. “I know everybody here, every single person that I see every day,” he said. “I understand that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.” Washington is about to enter deep water beginning with a four-game series against Atlanta that begins today with a doubleheader. The Nats play 33 of their next 39 games
against winning teams. By the time that stretch ends Sept. 16, their division chances, or their entire season, could be dead. In that same span, the Phillies play 23 of 40 games against losing teams. Considering that the Phillies entered Monday six games ahead of the Nats in the NL East, that Stephen Strasburg is unlikely to be back in the rotation within two weeks and that closer Sean Doolittle will be out even longer, who would pick the Nats? Maybe the Nats will need to hope for a wild-card berth. Entering Monday they were 4½ games behind the Braves for the second and last spot. Atlanta has an even harder

Mariners’ Robinson Cano begins Class AAA assignment, prepares to return from 80-game PED suspension
schedule than Washington with an almost ridiculous 43 of its last 54 games against teams that are at or above .500. The coming days and weeks may be the last stand of the 2012-2018 Nationals with Harper at their center. The club will need many factors, and tons of luck, to make the playoffs in a rare year when the NL has 11 of its 15 teams at or above .500. But one of those catalysts will have to be the missing man: Harper. He has anxiously chased more bad pitches this season than usual, so he strikes out more. But part of what nags him is not knowing whether, or how much, the only team he has ever played for really wants to keep him. Freedom of choice is fine, but don’t you also want the one you’re already with to choose you? Harper truly has no idea about that. He may already be gone and not know it. Rizzo said, “I believe in this team.” So far, the team appears to have heard it. What Harper seems to have heard is: We still believe in you, Bryce.
3 LHP Sean Newcomb The 6-foot-5 pitcher has allowed two runs over his past two starts — including a near no-hitter vs. the Dodgers. He’ll start tonight opposite Max Scherzer.
2 CF Ender Inciarte He’s had 17 hits in 14 games since the All-Star break, batting .340 in the second half. In a win Sunday against the Mets, he went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run.
1 LF Ronald Acuna Jr. Since the All-Star break, the 20-year-old rookie has hit .327 with four homers and a 1.058 OPS. He leads the Braves with 12 runs scored and four steals in that time.

Bills GM: Coleman a ‘low-risk’ gamble Before making the five-hour drive from Cleveland to Buffalo’s training camp in Pittsford, N.Y., Corey Coleman was advised to leave behind the baggage from two seasons with the Browns. Bills general manager Brandon Beane said Monday the Bills are offering the wide receiver a “clean slate.” A day after sending Cleveland a 2020 seventh-round pick for the former first-round pick, Beane called the move a “low-risk” gamble. The Browns traded down to select Coleman from Baylor with the 15th overall pick in 2016, passing on an opportunity to choose Eagles QB Carson Wentz. Hand injuries limited Coleman to 19 games, during which he caught 56 of 131 passes thrown his way for 718 yards and five touchdowns. (AP)

Racing CEO takes leave after weekend DWI arrest
The Capitals hired Scott Arniel and Reid Cashman as assistants on coach Todd Reirden’s staff, general manager Brian MacLellan announced Monday. Reirden was promoted from associate coach after Barry Trotz’s departure. Arniel, 55, fills Reirden’s old role after spending the past five seasons as associate coach for the Rangers. He previously spent parts of two seasons as coach of the Blue Jackets. Cashman, 35, was an assistant with the AHL’s Hershey Bears the past two years. Like Reirden, Cashman was a defenseman and could be a fit to coach the Caps’ blue liners. (AP)
NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France announced Monday he was taking an indefinite leave of absence a day after his arrest in New York’s Hamptons on charges of driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of oxycodone. France had a blood-alcohol content that was more than twice the legal limit, smelled of booze and slurred his words after he was seen blowing through a stop sign in Sag Harbor on Sunday, police said. France, 56, has been NASCAR’s chairman and CEO since 2003. His uncle, Jim France, a vice chairman and executive vice president, will take over those roles on an interim basis. (AP)

13 football players suspended at UNC NCAA Thirteen North Carolina football players, including quarterback Chazz Surratt, will be suspended from one to four games for selling team-issued Nike shoes, the school announced Monday. The suspensions will be staggered for certain players “to protect the health and safety of the students,” the school said. North Carolina self-reported the NCAA secondary violation; it had previously acknowledged that some players sold the shoes but hadn’t named the players or the punishment. Surratt, a sophomore who was in contention to start at quarterback, was suspended four games. That leaves junior Nathan Elliott to start UNC’s season opener
against California on Sept. 1. Surratt started seven games last season before being sidelined by an injury. Elliott started the final three games, and the two quarterbacks had been in a battle this summer for the starting job. The players sold the shoes in January “for as much $2,500 in cash,” the News & Observer reported, citing emails obtained in a public records request. The school announced in January that the team was receiving “exclusive Air Jordan 3s.” North Carolina finished 3-9 last season, including 1-7 in the ACC. The Tar Heels were picked to finish sixth in the seven-team ACC Coastal Division at last month’s media kickoff event. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Working out at every stage of parenthood
Glow up with a free challenge
Parenthood comes with countless surprises. Most involve bodily fluids. Like, for instance, the sudden lack of opportunities for Mom and Dad to sweat. “We both used to get up in the morning and just go exercise,” explains Amanda Holliday of Takoma Park, Md., MARVIN JOSEPH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
a dance fitness teacher whose son was born in 2016. “That’s not happening anymore.” Even if it’s possible to tote the kid along for a workout, there’s a lot more to consider beyond your number of reps — and a lot more to cram into your gym bag. And don’t count on it getting easier to carve out me-time as tykes turn into tweens, says 44-year-old Jennifer Lungren, who has been teaching fitness classes for moms in Northern Virginia for 15 years. Thanks to her four kids, every day is a blur of activities. Don’t want to take an 18-year break from exercise? Consider these strategies to make workouts work for families. VICKY HALLETT (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Malikah Lakhani, co-owner of Urban Evolution parkour gym in Northern Virginia, trains with kettle bells while holding her 2-year-old twins.

You now have a weight that probably will cry and scream if not held constantly. This can be an opportunity, suggests Holliday, 30, who discovered that her son was happiest when snuggled and swayed in a baby carrier. Rocking him to sleep got boring, so she experimented by adding in some salsa moves. He was such a great partner that she created a baby-wearing dance fitness class, Baby Mombo, which she started teaching when he was just 8 weeks old. Think smooth steps and dancing to get the heart rate up and work the core, plus squats and lunges. And of course, as the kid gets heavier each week, it’s more of a challenge. There’s also plenty you can do with a child in a stroller, including running or a structured program. The best known is probably Stroller Strides, a class developed by Fit4Mom, which has franchises across the country.
When kids advance from crawling to walking, all parents become expert sprinters. But most of the time, the job of a lifeguard is sedentary, which means missing out on fitness opportunities. That’s why Salil Maniktahla and Malikah Lakhani, the owners of Urban Evolution parkour gym in Northern Virginia and parents of 2-year-old twins, require moms and dads to participate in toddler classes. The goal, Maniktahla explains, is to help them learn to climb, balance and fall with their kids. Plus, getting out of a foam pit is really tough, he adds. Holliday, who teaches Zumbini (ages 0-4) and Family Zumba (ages 4 and up) — two spinoffs of the popular Zumba dance workout — has a similar take: “It’s funny how many parents come in jeans the first time. We sweat.” She also encourages families to move when they’re home or at the park.
Kids will naturally be curious about the activities you do for fitness, and as they get older, they can hike a trail or bend into yoga poses with you. It can be rewarding to pay attention to what they enjoy and find ways to join them. Clay Smith, of Mobile, Ala., had never been a runner. But when his son Stone was 6 years old and already quite speedy, his gym teacher recommended signing him up for a 5K. Smith, 42, credits his now-13-year-old son for helping the whole family (including his wife, Christi, and 11-year-old daughter, Audrey Kate) get into the habit of running together. If your family has a variety of fitness preferences, see if you can pair them up, suggests Lungren, who recently went on a 40-minute run while her 8-year-old pedaled a bike beside her. Their paces matched up, and they were able to chitchat the whole way.
Your kids are more “independent.” You? Not so much. Lungren says her older children occasionally swim laps or lift weights with her, but more often she’s waiting around during their sports practices. To keep thumb-twiddling time to a minimum, she and her husband plan out their weekly schedule every Sunday. She’s also gotten in the habit of storing resistance bands, a yoga mat and some weights in her car for on-thego workouts. Ricky Ricardo Aguilar, who runs Urban Boxing DC’s kids program, has been hired to conduct a personal training session for a family — teenage son, 20-something daughter and their parents. “Dad was hitting hard, and mom was a little slower, but no one felt left out,” Aguilar says. The ring also offers an apt metaphor for getting exercise while child-rearing: You have to roll with the punches.

I’m not nearly as impressed by me
For more information contact:
202-994-8976 NJUNDMJOUSJBMT@gwu.edu
Q. I am in my mid-20s and doing well in my career by outside measures, but I feel inadequate at work and in my personal life. I constantly feel like I don’t have my act together even though friends and family tell me they’re impressed with where I am in life. I avoid the dating world because I feel like any given guy would skip over me to look elsewhere. FEELING NOT UP TO SNUFF These types of feelings are not uncommon, but yours sound like they are getting in your way. It probably has to do with the way you developed selfworth; maybe it was always about someone else’s (a parent’s?) yardstick. Maybe it was a perfectionistic environment, or an undue focus on status or appearances, or maybe “failure was conceptualized as such a scary concept that
It’s OK to be nosy. people
it paralyzed you from letting yourself be an autonomous person, for fear of screwing up. Maybe you are genetically prone toward anxiety and were targeted with harsh social judgment early on, triggering you to be hypervigilant to what other people think and whether you measure up. Whatever it is, therapy can help you untangle this and, most important, work on it.
It’s kind to be mindful of this, but beating around the bush will only get you so far. If he’ll be offended by your perception that he needs to be screened, you can’t completely avoid that. But to soften it, you can try the fake-breezily-spontaneous approach (“I saw an article about ADD today — a few symptoms were surprising, some things you struggle with. Have you ever wondered?). You could also reflect back specific things that he has expressed: If he’s frustrated that he can’t keep things organized, or has forgotten his fifth appointment, or is called out during meetings for zoning out, then it’s not criticizing him, but rather empathizing with his difficulties. It won’t seem so much like finding fault if you emphasize that the whole purpose of a screening — which doesn’t even mean he has ADD — is to glean information that could lead to helpful changes. How did MoviePass collapse?
‘Lodge 49’ gets the weirdness factor just right MOVIEPASS/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
MoviePass seems like the perfect invention for an age of entertainment gluttony: an all-you-can-eat buffet of movies for $10 a month. But the company has been plagued by service outages and financial issues, leading it to take out an emergency $6 million loan last month. On Monday, MoviePass reversed a 50 percent price hike but scaled back its signature promotion from a movie a day to just three a month. So how did the company seemingly end up on the edge of bankruptcy? Here are three theories. MEGAN MC ARDLE (THE WASHINGTON POST) The MoviePass folks aren’t too bright
The discount model doesn’t work
It’s a good idea others will profit from
Maybe. One could argue that anyone who has ever tried to start a new business is suffering from a highly specialized form of stupidity — believing, against all evidence, that their company will be one of the lucky minority that doesn’t spiral down the drain. And bringing disruptive innovation to pricing movie tickets must have seemed like a smart move. For a long time, to the puzzlement of economists, theaters have charged basically the same price for popular movies and unpopular movies, for hot new releases and old ones, for Friday nights and Tuesday afternoons. The result? Fewer people going to movies than would be economically efficient in a better-priced world. But distributors want to keep prices the same for all films because their success is so dependent on the opening-weekend box office. MoviePass’ idea should have appealed to theater owners, because more customers mean increased concession sales at little additional cost. Once MoviePass had demonstrated proof-of-concept, theaters could have been expected to sell tickets to the company in bulk, at a discount.
Notice that this business model — “We’ll bring you a bunch of new customers you can upsell on extras” — was essentially the pitch that Groupon made to businesses. New discount-loving customers flooded in, but owners soon complained that the customers were essentially upsell-resistant cheapskates who often ended up costing the businesses money. Deep discounts can also cannibalize a profitable business. Who was most likely to use MoviePass? People who go to the movies a lot! If theaters had supplied MoviePass with the deeply discounted tickets that its pricing model required, the theaters would have been passing up the opportunity to sell more full-price tickets to loyal customers. No wonder theaters balked. Then again, theater owners might have had a darker motive for not cooperating: The AMC chain recently launched its own rival service, AMC Stubs A-List. The service costs more than MoviePass and lets you see a still-bountiful three movies a week, and it enrolled nearly 200,000 customers in its first five weeks of operation.
If you’ve ever had a CT scan, you can thank a British company called EMI Laboratories, which developed the first machines. “EMI scans” gave way to CT scans because the company lost its business. So companies like General Electric ended up the big winners from technology the Brits had developed. How could this happen? Because EMI was a conglomerate with diverse interests, and GE, with a thriving health care diagnostics division, was better positioned in the 1970s to exploit the technology. Well, AMC is simply in a better position than MoviePass to sell movie tickets. With the new AMC Stubs A-List service, the company has the data to manage demand. AMC also has a built-in customer base with its existing loyalty program, and it can keep MoviePass at bay simply by refusing to sell the company discounted tickets. All of this means MoviePass probably won’t survive too much longer, even if the company’s legacy endures as a movie-theater subscription model that encourages more gorging on entertainment.

TV REVIEW Weirdness runs through television’s more daring shows. We don’t have enough series that are just casually and pleasingly odd for the sake of being so. “Lodge 49,” which premiered Monday on AMC, is exactly the right kind of weird. Without ever becoming a violent criminal spree or a baffling head-scratcher, it’s simply a melancholy, 10-episode rumination on loss and friendship. The series, created by Jim Gavin, is about an unemployed millennial surf bum, Dud (Wyatt Russell), who finds a new purpose by joining the Ancient and Benevolent Order of the Lynx — a fading, Long Beach, Calif., social club populated by late-middle-age baby boomers (men and women), who all feel some degree of sorrow about the way things used to be. Russell (the son of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell) gives a laid-back and exquisitely wounded performance. The show stays utterly human in scope and ambition — funny and meandering. There’s also a whiff of the supernatural in the lore of Order of the Lynx, involving secret scrolls and the mystic belief in a “true lodge.” But these things never get in the way of the show’s essential and delightful magic, which is about a dude who is learning to abide. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You are going through a crazy time, but a friend provides some calm today in the midst of the storm. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You don’t have to understand all the reasons why someone is taking certain actions; all you have to do is react. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your response to someone else’s proposal today says a lot about your relationship. Some things may have to change. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) It’s time to get in touch with someone who can help you make a firm decision before too much happens you can’t control. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You can benefit from doing things in a different order today; a break with routine can recharge your batteries and inspire you.
MONDAY’S SOLUTION
MONDAY’S SOLUTION
You know just exactly what needs to be done today, but you may not be able to do it without stepping into someone else’s shoes for a time. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You don’t have a lot of time to get things done today, so you’ll want to double up where you can. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Those who gravitate toward you today do so because you have something they need — but that dynamic works both ways, and you will benefit too.
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

93 | 74 TODAY: More or less, this is a repeat of Monday. Temperatures may sneak up a few more degrees — close to 95. The heat index could flirt with 105. Late-day storm chances around 20 percent are low but not out of the question. It’s another muggy night, with little breeze and mild temperatures.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll
enjoy a certain one-on-one interaction today, even though it is unexpected and may upset your routine. Be flexible. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may be facing a certain situation in a way that takes both friends and enemies very much by surprise. You know full well what you are doing. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can benefit from adopting another’s point of view today, if only for a very short time. You’ve been wearing blinders for too long.

“[It’s] pretty nauseating to work for someone who’d empower a smear campaign by fascists.”
Beyonce opened up on a variety of subjects, including motherhood, body image and her heritage, with an as-told-to o feature that will appear in the September issue of Vogue. After giving birth to twins via a cesarean section last year, she discussed learning to feel more comfortable in her own skin. “During my recovery, I gave myself self-love and selfcare, and I embraced being curvier,” she said. Beyonce also used the article as a chance to reveal that she is descended from a slaveowner who married a slave, acknowledging she “had to process that revelation over time.” (EXPRESS)
