Police in Pennsylvania say someone swapped their old wood chipper for the town’s wood chipper. West Pittston police on Monday posted photos of the chipper that was left behind at the public works department. Police say someone dropped it off and stole the town’s wood chipper. Police in the Luzerne County community want to know if anyone can identify who owned the chipper that was left in the public works lot. (AP)

Then they went to Pizza Hut and brought a large pizza back to the house. (AP)
Chicago isn’t ready to say see you later, alligator. The Chicago Sun Times reported Tuesday that officers serving a warrant at a house found a 3-foot alligator along with guns and drugs. Then, two brothers claimed to have found another gator in the lagoon, though police suspect they put it there. (AP)

A church’s final offering ROCKVILLE For 63 years, the low-slung, brick church on Twinbrook Parkway has proudly advertised its liberal values. Its logo incorporates rainbow colors. Its members march in Pride parades. A sign formerly on the front lawn declared, “All Are Welcome. Really.” Twinbrook Baptist Church in Rockville has long been a powerful advocate for a wide range of marginalized groups — from children with autism to students with lunch money debt to LGBTQ Christians seeking a safe place to worship. So when declining membership forces Twinbrook’s ministry to end in August, the Rev. Jill McCrory says, she’ll rest easy knowing that her congregation will build on its legacy by selling the church and donating $1 million of the proceeds. “I’m proud of them for doing that this way,” McCrory said. “Many churches wait until the last minute, and they just dwindle and dwindle and dwindle.” A c r o s s d e n o m i n at i o n s ,

Baptist congregation in Md. marks closure with $1 million in donations
Facing declining membership, Twinbrook Baptist Church will soon close.
congregations are shrinking as Americans increasingly separate from organized religion. Fourteen percent of Americans identified as unaffiliated in 2000, while 25% labeled themselves that way in 2016, according to a report from the Public Religion Research Institute. For Twinbrook, that impact involves selling the building to the Pentecostal church Centro Cristiano Peniel for less than the market rate. The Spanish-speaking congregation had shared
Twinbrook’s space for 14 years, McCrory said, and Twinbrook officials wanted to enable the purchase. She declined to specify the sale price. Twinbrook plans to donate more than $1 million of the building’s proceeds to 35 local organizations for school lunch programs, medical clinics, LGBTQ youth programs and other community initiatives, McCrory said. During its last weekend of ministry on Aug. 17, the church will present the monetary gifts
to Nourish Now, the Arc Maryland and Comfort Cases, among other groups. The congregation, which consists of about 50 active members, chose to donate to organizations that share its values. The congregation asked for proposals from groups it previously worked with, then selected causes that would receive donations ranging from $2,000 to $250,000. Community Reach of Montgomery County, which provides housing, health care and other services for people in need, plans to use its $250,000 to open a diabetic center at its health clinic for low-income and uninsured adults, executive director Agnes Saenz said. The organization also expects the money to subsidize patients’ radiology and laboratory work. “It’s the best legacy that Twinbrook Baptist can leave to our patients,” Saenz said. “We’re not just going to close the doors and turn off the lights and say, ‘Rockville, do whatever,’ ” said Regina Gaither, chair of the Twinbrook church council. “We wanted to be able to give back to the community that this church was founded upon.” MARISA IATI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

IMMIGRATION The Trump administration is exploring bringing more unaccompanied minors to Northern Virginia and other parts of the country to relieve overcrowded detention centers at a southern border that officials say has reached “a breaking point.” In a solicitation posted last week, the General Services Administration says it needs to lease long-term space in Northern Virginia to house about 440 children who arrived in the U.S. illegally without a parent or guardian. That would increase fourfold the number of children held in federally funded shelters in Virginia. The administration’s search underscores the intense backlash in recent months over the squalid conditions in crowded federal shelters at the border, where visitors have described seeing unbathed children wearing clothes caked with snot and tears, toddlers without diapers and teenage mothers in clothes stained with breast milk. Last month, a report from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General found “serious” overcrowding at U.S. Border Patrol detention centers in Texas, where the number of unaccompanied minors apprehended — most of them arriving from Central America — jumped to nearly 24,000 in May. T h e O ff ic e of Ref u ge e
Migrants wait for food in March in a pen erected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in El Paso, Texas.
Resettlement is charged with finding longer-term shelter for unaccompanied minors and, where possible, reuniting them with relatives in the U.S. after conducting background checks. The agency funds about 170 shelters in 23 states, with about 8,700 minors in those facilities. In Virginia, 130 unaccompanied minors are being housed in the commonwealth’s two largest federally funded shelters — one in Prince William County and one in Staunton, advocates say. The solicitation says the administration hopes to lease close to 110,000 square feet for 15 years in an area of Virginia that includes Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties, plus smaller surrounding cities.
Is one shelter enough? Immigrant advocates said the idea of building one large shelter for unaccompanied minors is worrisome. “The notion that the same level of care could be provided at a 440-bed facility as at a 100-bed facility is a little hard to imagine,” said Simon SandovalMoshenberg, legal director of the Legal Aid Justice Center’s Immigrant Advocacy Program. (TWP)
The lease is part of a plan by Health and Human Services to build permanent shelters near where relatives of unaccompanied minors already live, to eliminate the need to rely on temporary shelters.
Once completed, the “Virginia Residential Child Care Facility” would begin housing the children next spring, officials said. The shelter would have a staff of 147 people and would come with classrooms, sleeping areas and an extra 2 acres of outdoor space, the solicitation said. The announcement caught local government officials and immigrant advocates by surprise. Sharon Bulova, D-At Large, chairman of Fairfax County’s Board of Supervisors, said she was “puzzled,” given Northern Virginia’s expensive lease rates. But, she said, “there are many nonprofits and charitable organizations in this area that would be glad to be supportive, I’m sure.” ANTONIO OLIVO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Halfway house future unclear D.C. Council holdout now supports facility, but lease issues remain THE DISTRICT Plans for a new halfway house in Northeast D.C. are unsettled less than 90 days before the city’s current facility is scheduled to close, alarming activists who say the city risks being left without reentry services for men returning from prison. Hope Village, the longtime manager of the city’s only halfway house for men exiting the federal prison system, is on track to cease operating Oct. 31. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons last year selected nonprofit Core DC to replace Hope Village, which has been dogged by complaints of inadequate security and services. Core was supposed to take over reentry services under a five-year, $60 million contract to operate a facility for 300 men at 3400 New York Ave. NE. Its plans have come close to collapsing, faced with opposition from neighborhood activists and D.C. Council member Kenyan R. McDuffie, D-Ward 5, whose ward would host the new center. McDuffie, who repeatedly wrote letters to federal officials last fall opposing the new halfway house, recently reversed
course and dropped objections. But prominent District developer Douglas Jemal backed out of a tentative agreement to lease the property in December. Hope Village also has challenged the contract award. The federal Government Accountability Office recommended in February that the prisons bureau revisit its decision to award the contract, but it’s unclear how long that process will take. Advocates say ex-offenders could be sent to halfway houses outside D.C. if Hope Village closes without a replacement. Ron Moten, a longtime activist in Southeast D.C., said he and others were shocked by Jemal’s decision to renege on the letter of intent with Core, in part because the developer has supported adding opportunities for ex-offenders. “If you have people come home and they have to go to Delaware and Baltimore, they’re almost certainly going to reoffend and they’re going to go back to prison,” Moten said. In an interview, Jemal refused to discuss the situation at 3400 New York Ave. NE or say whether he was reconsidering a lease for Core. He has not stated publicly why he abandoned the Core agreement. China stabilized its currency Tuesday, suggesting it might hold off from aggressively letting the yuan weaken.
Markets remain shaken by U.S.-China trade war Beijing has stabilized its currency, but tensions between two still high ECONOMY China stabilized its currency Tuesday, suggesting it might hold off from aggressively letting the yuan weaken as a response to U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. The yuan declined to 7.0562 to the dollar before strengthening to 7.0297 in the afternoon. That came a day after Beijing sent financial markets tumbling by allowing the currency to fall to an 11-year low. A weaker yuan can help neutralize U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods by making them more price-competitive
on international markets. The Trump administration responded Monday by officially declaring that China improperly manipulates the yuan’s value. That opens the way to possible new penalties on top of tariff hikes already imposed on Chinese goods in a fight over Beijing’s trade surplus and technology policies. The sight of the world’s two economies engaging in a tit-fortat economic dispute has shaken investors. So the fact that China let its currency stabilize Tuesday offered some hope that the sides might try to keep the situation from escalating further. U.S. stocks clawed back some of their steep losses from Monday. The Chinese central bank

One of the most beloved birds in Maine is having one of its most productive seasons for mating pairs in years on remote islands off the state’s coast. Maine is the only state in the U.S. where Atlantic puffins breed, and they do so on hard-to-reach places like Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge in the Gulf of Maine. The birds are well on their way to setting a record for the number of breeding pairs, said National Audubon Society scientist Stephen Kress, who has studied the birds for years. Kress said nearly 750 pairs nested on Seal Island and Eastern Egg Rock in 2018, and this year’s number will likely be higher. (AP)

White officers guide black man by rope in Texas GALVESTON, TEXAS In a pair of photos, two white lawmen atop horses guide a bound black man with a rope down a wide and empty street. If it weren’t for the cars and pavement, a quick glance might lead to the conclusion that they were colorized plates from the antebellum South. But it was Saturday in the island city of Galveston, and officers arrested Donald Neely on suspicion of criminal trespassing. They had horses, and a rope, but no patrol car to take Neely away. The officers attached the blue rope onto his handcuffs, and ro Neely, 43, was led to a mounted N officer staging area. o Bystander photos from the aarrest went viral across social media, with many African m Americans saying the photos A were reminiscent of captured w sslaves in the 1800s. The outcry prompted an apology Monday p from Galveston Chief Vernon L. fr Hale III, who called the arrest an H ““unnecessary embarrassment” for Neely. fo “I believe our officers showed poor judgment in this instance p aand could have waited for a ttransport unit at the location of tthe arrest,” Hale said. The officers were trained in the arrest technique for crowd control and other scenarios, Hale said, but the public blowback has led the department to rethink how the practice was applied to a sole suspect amid a national discussion about police tactics. U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman Jr. has submitted his resignation, signaling the end of a two-year stint during what he called a historically difficult time in relations between the two countries. Huntsman is planning to return to Utah amid speculation that he may again run for governor, said Salt Lake Chamber president Derek Miller, who served under him during his previous tenure. U.S. national security adviser John Bolton pressed his case Tuesday for sweeping action against Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, warning foreign governments and companies that they could face retaliation in the U.S. if they continue to do business with his socialist administration. Bolton’s comments came after the White House froze all Venezuelan government assets in the U.S. late Monday, putting the country on a short list of U.S. adversaries, including Cuba, North Korea and Iran, that have been targeted by such aggressive financial measures.
A veteran FBI agent who wrote derogatory text messages about Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Tuesday Strzok charging that the bureau caved to “unrelenting pressure” from the president when it fired him. The suit from Peter Strzok also alleges he was unfairly punished for expressing his political opinions, and that the Justice Department violated his privacy when it shared hundreds of his text messages. The suit seeks reinstatement to the FBI, back pay and a declaration that the government violated his rights. (AP)

The peace accord followed the two leaders signing a related agreement last week to cease military hostilities. Lawsuit: Scouts weren’t protected

COURTS A group of lawyers is claiming to have uncovered hundreds of previously unreported cases of sexual abuse in the Boy Scouts of America, according to a lawsuit filed Monday in Pennsylvania. The plaintiff in the case, named only as S.D. to keep his identity private, is alleging that he was assaulted “hundreds” of times by a scout leader in Pennsylvania over the course of about four years in the 1970s. The lawsuit alleges that S.D.’s abuse would not have been possible had it not been for the negligence of the Boy Scouts, that the organization conspired to keep incidents of sexual assault a secret, and that the organization and other defendants engaged in “reckless misconduct” in failing to protect young participants. The litigation stems from an effort to unearth previously unreported cases of child sexual abuse in one of the country’s most prominent youth organizations, spearheaded by Abused in Scouting, a group that collaborates on bringing such cases to light. “We feel it’s an opportunity for those who were abused in scouting to come forward, to tell their

Unity plea rings hollow Trump’s prepared remarks following two attacks contrast with his divisive tweets POLITICS Teleprompter Trump repudiated Twitter Trump in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House on Monday. Speaking in the wake of two mass shootings in less than 24 hours that left at least 31 dead over the weekend, President Trump spoke of “the inherent worth and dignity of every human life” and the scourge of “destructive partisanship.” “In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy,” the president said, reading from a script on a teleprompter in front of him. He added, “Now is the time to set destructive partisanship aside — so destructive — and find the courage to answer hatred with unity, devotion and love.” That unifying message stood in stark contrast to more than 2½ years of name-calling, demonizing minorities and inflaming racial animus, much of it carried out on Twitter. Such is the picture of a divisive leader trying to act as a healer. In the aftermath of Saturday’s anti-immigrant attack in El Paso, Texas, officials are still investigating, but believe the
alleged gunman posted a manifesto that echoed Trump’s harsh rhetoric on immigrants, including describing his attack as “a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.” Trump, in tweets and in rallies, has repeatedly decried the “invasion” of undocumented immigrants across the nation’s southern border. The episode and its aftermath illustrate the limits on Trump’s ability to speak to the whole nation in a time of tragedy, given both his rhetoric and his focus on appealing primarily to the part of the electorate that voted for him in 2016 and still supports him now. As White House officials privately scrambled to plan a visit for Trump to El Paso and Dayton, Ohio — where another gunman killed at least nine early Sunday morning — the president found himself unwelcome in the grieving Texas border city. Rep. Veronica Escobar, DTexas, whose district includes the El Paso Walmart involved in the massacre, urged the president and his team “to consider the fact that his words and his actions have played a role in this.” “From my perspective, he is not welcome here,” Escobar said
Trump plans to visit Dayton, El Paso today President Trump is preparing to visit El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, today, appearances that will not be universally welcome as the two cities grieve after weekend mass shootings. Several Democratic officials have urged Trump not to visit El Paso, a city of about 683,000 with a largely Latino population, in the aftermath of Saturday’s antiimmigrant attack at a Walmart that left 22 dead. And on Tuesday, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, D, encouraged people unhappy over Trump’s upcoming visit to the city of about 140,000 to protest. (TWP)
Monday on MSNBC. Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, defended Trump’s handling of the shootings and praised him for condemning racism, white supremacy and bigotry. She also praised her boss for restraining himself from attacking the Democratic presidential candidates who blamed Trump for the shooting. But for critics of Trump, his teleprompter remarks felt perfunctory and even disingenuous.
GOP Rep. Mike Turner of Dayton backs assault weapon ban and magazine limits
“If you laid that speech next to videos of his rallies, it’s mindboggling,” said David Axelrod, a senior adviser to former President Obama. “He said what you’d want the president to say. The problem is that in real life, he’s a provocateur, not a healer, and his whole political project depends on those provocations. And so how long will it be before he returns to ‘Twitter Trump’ stirring the pot?” Tim O’Brien, a Trump biographer and executive editor of Bloomberg Opinion, said that “Twitter is the closest to Donald Trump’s core that you’re going to get publicly.” When he reads from a teleprompter, O’Brien added, Trump has little “tells” — those moments when he goes off script. The president did so at the end of his remarks Monday, when he accidentally blessed the memory of “those who perished in Toledo” — even though the shootings were in Dayton and El Paso. The message that sends, O’Brien said, is “that he just doesn’t care enough, that he isn’t steeped in the details.” ASHLEY PARKER, PHILIP RUCKER AND JOSH DAWSEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

was unclear, because the Indian government shut off most communication with it, including internet networks. Thousands of troops were deployed to the restive region amid fears that the government’s steps could spark unrest in Kashmir, India’s only Muslim-majority state. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said in an address Tuesday that he feared the Kashmiri people, angered over India’s decision to strip the region of its special status, could attack Indian security forces and that New Delhi could blame Pakistan for it. “If India attacks us, we will respond,” Khan said. “We will fight until the last drop of blood.”

Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, above, bucked his party Tuesday to call for expanded gun laws, urging the GOP-led state Legislature to pass laws requiring background checks for nearly all gun sales and allowing courts to restrict firearms access for people perceived as threats. On Tuesday, the FBI opened an investigation into the mass shooting in a popular Dayton nightlife district to try to determine what ideologies influenced 24-year-old gunman Connor Betts and why he chose his specific target. In violation of policies, tech giants sell gun parts Google and Amazon have been offering for sale and profiting from listings of firearm and gun accessories, an apparent violation of their own stated policies that shows the pitfalls of software-driven retail. The companies as recently as Monday, within days of three mass shootings that have shaken the nation, were offering rifle magazines for sale on their sites, including models with a capacity to hold 25 or more bullets. Knee injury sidelines WR for ’19 season
Confirmed: Rooney out
D.C. UNITED Wayne Rooney will leave D.C. United and return to England after this MLS season, ending a spectacular but short-lived spell that revitalized the organization and brought enduring memories to the local soccer scene. United and Derby County, a second-tier English club, announced Tuesday that the superstar forward will become a player and assistant coach this winter. The captain’s contract with United, which earned him a team-record $3.5 million in base salary this season, was to have run through the 2021 season. United will not receive a transfer fee, multiple people said on the condition of anonymity, but will clear his contract off its books. Rooney, who will turn 34 in October, will remain with United for the final nine regular-season matches and the playoffs, should United (9-7-9, 36 points) advance. This week, a Derby executive met with officials in D.C. and Rooney flew to England for talks with his future employers. Rooney is slated to rejoin
United today for conditioning ahead of Sunday’s showdown with fellow international star Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the Los Angeles Galaxy at Audi Field. “Football is a game where opportunities come up, and as a player, you have to make those decisions, which aren’t always easy and won’t please everyone,” Rooney said in a phone interview from Derby, where he completed paperwork and conducted a news conference. “I just hope everyone respects the decision and understands it is a step toward the next chapter in my career in football.” The move, multiple people close to the situation said, was prompted by his wife’s desire to live in England, closer to extended family. The couple and their four children have been living in Bethesda. To provide long-term cover — and to aid the struggling attack this season — United reached a deal to acquire Ola Kamara from Chinese club Shenzhen for about $2.5 million. Kamara, 29, scored 48 goals in 90 MLS matches from

United moves to fill void as their superstar agrees to return to England after season
Before moving to Bethesda last year, Wayne Rooney had never lived far from Manchester, England.
“I just hope everyone respects the decision and understands it is a step toward the next chapter in my career in football.” WAYNE ROONEY, explaining why he’s leaving D.C. United with two years left on his contract
2016 to 2018. He arrived in Washington over the weekend and is awaiting clearance to practice. United has also acquired Felipe Martins from the Vancouver
Whitecaps for unspecified financial considerations, one source familiar with the deal said. Martins, 28, will address an urgent need for defensive midfielders in the wake of injuries to Russell Canouse and Chris Durkin, and Junior Moreno’s red-card suspension. With the transfer and trade deadline late tonight, United was also in negotiations to purchase Argentine winger Mateo Garcia, 22, from Spanish club Las Palmas. (He was on loan with Aris in Greece last season.) The price tag is up to $3 million, one source said. MLS clubs are able to sign free agents until the Aug. 30 roster freeze.
Maryland sophomore wide receiver Jeshaun Jones tore his ACL at practice Monday and will miss the season, the school announced Tuesday. The Terrapins have a deep corps of wideouts, but Jones probably would have been a starter. He will redshirt this season and is likely to return in time for spring practice. Jones had 288 receiving yards last year, the second-highest mark on the team and the most among returning players. He also had 173 rushing yards, averaging 9.6 per carry. Jones burst onto the college scene in Maryland’s 2018 season opener when he had three touchdowns on his first three touches — one rushing, one receiving, one passing. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Site of Nats’ AAA team isn’t a minor problem NATIONALS By now, Adrián Sanchez has a routine. When the Nationals recall the utility infielder from Class AA Harrisburg, as they have six times this season, he climbs into his Toyota Highlander around noon, zips down Interstate 83 and gets to Nationals Park just before 2 p.m. Sanchez is the organization’s expert in travel between minor league cities and the big league club. He credited the proximity for easing the transition between levels. He couldn’t say the same for travel from Class AAA Fresno. “It was horrible,” Sanchez said, through a team interpreter, of coming from California. “Real bad experience.” Before the season, amid widespread reshuffling of Class AAA affiliates, the Nationals ended up with the Fresno Grizzlies. The team made almost no geographic sense for Washington, but the Mets had bought the Nats’ old affiliate in Syracuse. Nashville, their preferred location, signed a four-year deal with the Rangers instead. The Nationals didn’t have much choice. They signed a two-year deal with Fresno. Months later, the Nationals have all but abandoned Fresno as

a legitimate place to keep fringe major league players whom they could need on short notice. The team now has four players in Harrisburg, Pa., and five in Fresno on its 40-man roster. “They treat us great over there. It’s a great facility to play in,” general manager Mike Rizzo said of the Grizzlies. “It’s [just] difficult geographically to move players back and forth.” Reliever Austin Adams found out late one night he was needed in the majors the next day. He scrambled to a 7 p.m. flight with a layover in Phoenix, then took an early flight to meet the team in Miami. By July, Rizzo admitted it was becoming too much. “ It’s problematic to get
somebody from Fresno there the next day and have them perform,” Rizzo said last week. “[Players] are there physically, but they are getting into town at 4 or 5 in the morning and there is a game that night.” This weekend, among the Nationals’ four roster moves, they selected the contract of reliever Javy Guerra from Fresno while the Nats were on a West Coast trip. Guerra was home in Arizona, but it was the first time those logistics would have worked out all season. And the Nationals must go through this all again next season. “We’re going to have to find something we like about it,” Rizzo said, “because we’re there.”

The initial response to “The Bluest Eye” was, in her own words, “slight, even hostile.” But fame came, and she went on to write 10 more novels — including “Sula,” “Song of Solomon” and “Paradise” — stories that placed black women at the center, in the full complexity of their lives. In 2008, she returned to the earliest days of American slavery to write “A Mercy,” a short, feverish novel that reminded us of her stylistic sorcery. And just four years ago, at the age of 84, she published her last novel, “God Help the Child,” which brought her back to the tragic themes of “The Bluest Eye.” As a professor at Princeton and elsewhere, she encouraged generations of students and future writers to reimagine American literature and remake it. Before that, as an editor at Random House, she broke down old racial barriers and welcomed new authors into the canon.

1931-2019 “124 was spiteful.” With that enigmatic opening line of “Beloved,” Toni Morrison, who died Monday at the age of 88, placed her indelible stamp on American literature. That a black woman should write the greatest novel of the 20th century is a glorious rebuke to our long history that denigrated women and African Americans. From the furnace of her genius emerged a Pulitzer Prize-winning book that melded America’s past into a work of enduring art — gothic, magical, magisterial. And the passage of more than three decades has done nothing to diminish the power of that masterpiece. It remains, like the world’s most famous monuments, both familiar and astonishing, as capable of inspiring awe as it did when it first appeared in 1987. The granddaughter of a slave, Morrison wrote the novel that definitively dismantled a century of Southern romanticism. With “Beloved,” she dared to expose not just the injustice of slavery, but the full spectrum of its obscenity. And she called forth the spirit of trauma that still haunts this nation, what she once called “the tenacity of racism.” Recalling the true story of Margaret Garner, an African American who killed her own daughter rather than allow her to be dragged back into slavery, Morrison presented America’s “peculiar institution” in terms so visceral and intimate that no reader could endure it unshaken. The scope of Morrison’s accomplishments is impossible to exaggerate. She published her first classic, “The Bluest Eye,” at the age of 39, at a time when books by black authors were usually ghettoized in bookstores and
“What a gift to breathe the same air as her, if only for a while.” BARACK OBAMA, paying tribute to Toni Morrison on Twitter. “Her writing was a beautiful, meaningful challenge to our conscience and our moral imagination,” the former president wrote. Obama awarded Morrison the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

As this summer has demonstrated so horrifically, the rhetoric of racial hatred maintains its currency in America, even from the highest realms. The words of Morrison’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech from 1993 — when she became the first black woman to earn the award — still ring with relevance. “Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge,” she said. “It is the language that drinks blood, laps vulnerabilities, tucks its fascist boots under crinolines of respectability and patriotism as it moves relentlessly toward the bottom line and the bottomedout mind.” In that same speech, Morrison said: “We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” We’re still plumbing the dimensions of hers. RON CHARLES (THE WASHINGTON POST)
BOOKS Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, who died in New York on Monday at 88 due to complications from pneumonia, left behind an indelible literary heritage. And it was Morrison’s words that myriad writers and others turned to in an effort to eulogize her Tuesday. Author Darnell L. Moore paid tribute by tweeting an excerpt from her 1997 novel “Song of Solomon”: “If you surrendered to the air, you could ride it.” Harlem’s Union Seminary also honored Morrison via Twitter, with a quote from 1987’s “Beloved”: “Love is or it ain’t. Thin love ain’t love at all.” Through the years, Morrison also sat for many interviews and shared her reflections through essays and other works. “In this country American means white,” Morrison told The Guardian in 1992. “Everybody else has to hyphenate.” “If you have some power,” she told O, The Oprah Magazine, in 2003, “then your job is to empower somebody else.” Morrison visited Portland State University in 1975 and delivered remarks that director Ava DuVernay later transcribed. “If you look at the world as a brutal game, then you bump into the mystery of the tree-shaped scar,” Morrison said. “There seems to be such a thing as grace, such a thing as beauty, such a thing as harmony. All of which are wholly free and available to us.” ELAHE IZADI (TWP)

Childers stays true to Kentucky roots ALBUM REVIEW The list of country artists making groundbreaking music these days isn’t as long as it should be, but it has to include Tyler Childers. And he’s at it again on “Country Squire,” a worthy successor to the breakthrough “Purgatory.” That album was so firmly set in Kentucky that you could breathe the fumes from the coal trucks. The new record, released Friday, rises from the same Appalachian roots. And the fact that Childers keeps doing things his way makes this as good as anything coming out of Nashville these days. “Country Squire” was produced by Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson, the same duo Childers worked with on the earlier album. The sound takes
traditional Appalachian i nstr uments — and it’s the fiddle-playing and Childers’ ‘Country Squire’ plaintive singTyler Childers ing that plant this album most firmly in the mountains — and amps them up in unexpected ways. Whether Childers is singing a loving tribute to his used camper, as he does in the title song, or tracing the school bus route of his youth on “Bus Route,” it’s clear he’s not following any path but his own. That’s how it is with an artist who’s already so established that he’s far more likely to lead. And make no mistake, his path is winding out of the eastern Kentucky hills. SCOTT STROUD (AP)
