Perry to Throw Hat Into ’12 Ring Spokesman confirms Texas governor will announce Saturday Texas Gov. Rick Perry is running for president, a spokesman confirmed Thursday, a move certain to shake up the race for the GOP nomination, much to the delight of conservatives looking for a candidate to embrace. Perry spokesman Mark Miner said the governor would make his intentions known on Saturday while visiting South Carolina and New Hampshire just as most of his presidential rivals compete in a test vote in Iowa. Official word of Perry’s entrance into the race came just hours before eight candidates, including GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, were to appear onstage during a nationally televised debate. It wasn’t much of a surprise. The longest-serving governor in Texas history has flirted with a presidential run since May and has spent the past few months courting Republi-

He met privately with potential donors from California to New York and gave rabblerousing speeches to party faithful, casting himself as a fiscally responsible social conservative. His intentions became even clearer over the past few days when officials disclosed that he would visit an important trio of states, a cam-
paign-like schedule timed to overshadow the debate and the Iowa straw poll and, perhaps, wreak havoc on a field led by Romney. Unlike others in the race, Perry has credibility with the at-times warring camps of the GOP’s primary electorate. But Perry also has never run a national campaign before, and it’s unclear whether his contemplation of state secession

The Iowa Republican straw poll on Saturday will mark the first time Republicans in Iowa indicate publicly who they want as their 2012 presidential nominee. It’s a test vote of sorts that comes months before the precinct caucuses. But despite its name, the “straw poll” is not a poll at all, and it’s certainly not scientific. Rather, it’s a fundraiser for the state GOP and a daylong political festival at Iowa State University. Presidential candidates make speeches and try to lure the most supporters to the event in hopes of getting their backing in a nonbinding vote. (AP)

will sit well with GOP primary voters outside his state. The governor lags well behind other candidates in both campaign workers and fundraising. But the story he tells of having no interest in higher office until friends and family persuaded him to join the race adds to his carefully cultivated image as a Texas cowboy reluctantly riding into Washington to save the day. Normalcy After Face Transplant 2009

BRIGHAM AND WOMEN’S HOSPITAL/AP
Patients go public as the success rate for the surgery rises >[Wbj^
They savor pizza and burgers and many of them can walk the streets without people knowing they have someone else’s cheeks, nose, lips and skin. People who have had face transplants increasingly are going public, helping to transform an operation that six years ago was daredevil theory into one that is widely accepted. At least 18 face transplants have been done around the world, starting with a French woman mauled by her dog in November 2005, said Dr. Maria Siemionow at Cleveland Clinic. She did the first face transplant in the U.S. in December 2008. Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston has done three this year alone. The U.S. Department

9^_cf#CWkb_d] L_Yj_cÊi D[m <WY[ The new face of Charla Nash, the Connecticut woman who was mauled by a chimpanzee two years ago, was revealed for the first time Thursday in photos showing a startling transformation. The photos were first shown on NBC’s “Today” show and in Hearst Connecticut Newspapers and were released by Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where she had face-transplant surgery in May. Nash, 57, didn’t appear on “Today” because relatives said she was too weak. In a statement, Nash thanked all the medical staff who had helped her: “I will now be able to do things I once took for granted. ... I will be able to kiss and hug loved ones. I am tremendously grateful to the donor and her family.” (AP)
of Defense is providing money for more of these surgeries in Cleveland and Boston in hopes of helping soldiers disfigured in battle. “It isn’t mainstream yet. It’s a last resort surgery,” said Michael Cunningham, a psychologist at the University of Louisville, a pioneer in hand transplantation. But the face transplant experience so far shows that “there were a lot of naysayers and worries that just didn’t seem to come to pass,” he said. Not all face transplant recipients have recovered hoped-for capabilities yet, and some have less than stellar aesthetic results, although they are all vastly improved from how they looked before. The more recent ones fared especially well. “They look from the very beginning quite natural and quite normal,” said Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, who has performed four face transplants at Brigham. “The level of normalcy” is “amazing.” MARILYNN MARCHIONE (AP)

D[m Oeha Wall Street’s wildest week since 2008 careened into another 400plus point move for the Dow on Thursday. This time, stocks shot up after investors saw small signs that the economy might not be headed into another recession. Fewer Americans joined the unemployment line last week, and a technology bellwether said revenue could grow faster this quarter than analysts expected. The news pushed prices on long-term Treasurys down, and gold fell from its record high.

Discovery will head next spring to a Virginia hangar belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. Endeavour will then be transported to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
The surge came after the government said the number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time fell to 395,000 last week, down 7,000 from a week earlier. It’s the first time the number has dropped below 400,000 in four months. Analysts said it may be a sign that the job market is slowly improving after its three-month slump. “It’s the first scrap of economic data we’ve had recently that says the idea that we’re going into another recession may be overdone,” Carlton Neel said, a senior portfolio manager at Virtus Investment Partners. Ghastly Choices Haunt Somalis In fleeing famine, parents are forced to leave children to die

:WZWWX" A[doW Wardo Mohamud Yusuf walked with her 1-year-old daughter on her back and her 4-year-old son at her side to flee Somalia’s drought and famine. When he collapsed near the end of the two-week journey, she poured some of the little water she had on his head, but he was unconscious and could not drink. She asked others traveling with them for help, but none stopped. Then the 29-year-old mother had to make a choice that no parent

should have to make. “I decided to leave him behind to his God on the road,” Yusuf said at a refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya. “I am sure that he was alive, and that is my heartbreak.” Parents fleeing the devastating famine are having to make unimaginably cruel choices: Which children have the best chance to survive when food and water run low? Who should be left behind?
“I have never faced such a dilemma in my life,” Yusuf said. “Now I’m reliving the pain of abandoning my child. I wake up at night to think about him. I feel terrified whenever I see a son of his age.” The U.S. estimates that more than 29,000 Somali children under age 5 have died in the famine in the last three months. An unknown number too weak to walk farther
have been abandoned. More than 12 million people in East Africa are in need of food aid due to the severe drought. The U.N. says 2.8 million of those are in need of immediate assistance, including more than 450,000 in Somalia’s famine zones. When Faqid Nur Elmi’s 3-yearold son died on the road, she surrounded his body with branches as a grave. She couldn’t stop to mourn. There were five other children to think about. “Where will I get the energy to dig up a grave for him?” she asked. “I was just thinking of how I can save the rest of the children. The God who gave me him in the first place took him away.” (AP)

A teenage girl wearing a suicide vest and a woman attacked Pakistani police guarding the scene of a blast in the northwest on Thursday, twin strikes that killed five people and broke a relative lull in militant violence in the country.

Official: ‘Rumors’ Churn Jittery French Markets FWh_i French bankers and officials scrambled to calm nerves on Thursday after two days of whiplash trading that saw their banks’ market value fall and rise by billions of euros. Those efforts appeared to settle markets jittery about the health of French banks and the heavily indebted U.S. and European economies, but economists said the rebound remained very fragile. Bank of France chief Christian Noyer blamed “unfounded rumors” for plunges in the shares of top banks, including Societe Generale and BNP Paribas, and said the country’s financial institutions were sound. Societe Generale CEO Frederic Oudea called the rumors “irrational.” All three leading credit rating agencies reaffirmed their triple-A assessment of France, and analysts said they could not identify a trigger for the market turmoil. Italy and Spain, but it has failed for years to reduce a deficit that stood at 7.1 percent last year. No other eurozone economy with a triple-A rating has a higher debt than France’s — about 85 percent of national income. The other contestants in Zipcar’s Low-Car Diet Challenge had better watch out for Andrew Bossi. Less than a week into the 30-day competition — which is about encouraging car owners to ditch their vehicles in favor of other transportation options — the 28-year-old Logan Circle resident forgot he even had wheels. “I didn’t move my car, and got a ticket,” laments Bossi, who’s otherwise pleased with his decision to serve as one of D.C.’s three representatives in the nationwide challenge. Even if he hadn’t been selected to receive the Zipcar membership, a $100 SmarTrip card, a Capital Bikeshare membership and other goodie bag items, Bossi would have been without wheels: He had planned to park his car for a while to see how well he could manage his commute to work near the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro station. finding the hot cars, because he likes notifying WMATA and flooding into the next car over with his fellow passengers. (Yeah, I don’t get that, either.) The one downside is that there’s virtually nowhere to grab food within walking distance of his office. “So I’ve started packing lunches for the first time since grade school,” Bossi says. That sounds easier to lug around than a box loaded with squash, corn and fruit, which is what fellow contestant Tiffany Bridge, 32, recently

After eyeing that box of produce, a rider struck up a conversation and asked for a peach. Hoofing it from the Metro, Bridge has met more of her neighbors. Instead of driving, she and her husband took the bus to a party in Tenleytown and were able to consume all the tiki drinks they wanted. Metro’s recent maintenance issues have made Bridge swear off trains on weekends, which might sound like a problem. But the newly minted bus evangelist has been making do even when half the Red Line seems to be shut down. “People get in a Metro-only rut,” says Bridge, who’s discovered that Google Maps now dishes out advice on which route to take and where to get off. Between that and NextBus, she feels like a master of the system. “My No. 1 tip is to take the money you’re saving on your car and put it into your smartphone plan,” she says. Spoken like a Low-Car Diet Challenge champ. Between Bridge, Bossi and Natalie Palmer (who rounds out the trio), D.C.’s squad looks like it has a real chance to beat out teams from other cities for the title. And whether or not they win, they’re guaranteed to get the best reward of all: motivation to stay low-car for life.

A Twitter user snapped another photo at the Ballston-MU station but did not say when it was taken. Metro officials said they are investigating the incidents. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
H_Y^cedZ" LW$ At least three in f ive Virginia schools failed to meet annual benchmarks under the federal No Child Left Behind law, a dramatic increase in the failure rate that education leaders attribute to “arbitrary rules that “misidentify schools and need to be changed, state officials said Thursday. Sixty-two percent of Virginia’s schools fell short of testing goals,
compared with 39 percent the year before, according to results released Thursday. All but four of the state’s 132 school divisions, including all of those in Northern Virginia, also failed. Individual schools’ results are available on the website of the Virginia Department of Education. Under NCLB, the target passing rate for standardized tests increases each year in an effort to meet the federal law’s goal of 100 percent proficiency in reading and math by 2013. This year, for a Virginia school to succeed, at least 86 percent of students had to show proficien-

No LOL Matter British officials consider blocking social media to curb youth riots
9Wk]^j ed 9Wc[hW Facial recognition technology being considered for London’s 2012 Olympics is getting a workout in the wake of Britain’s riots, officials said Thursday. Officers are feeding photographs of suspects through Scotland Yard’s program. Police have also released two dozen photos and videos to the picture-sharing website Flickr, where they’ve gathered more than 400,000 hits, and some have also been published by Britain’s brash tabloids, urging readers to report looters to the police. (AP)
Police line up Thursday in London ahead of a raid to detain individuals suspected of taking part in the looting and violence in Britain’s riots, which began Saturday night.
After four nights of lawlessness that has upended British society and seen 1,200 alleged looters and arsonists swept off the streets, the government is also targeting a digital culprit: social media. Governments from China to the authoritarian leaders of the Arab Spring have sought to control social networking sites, fearing their power to connect and organize dissidents. But Britain is weighing an unprecedented move to intervene in citizens’ personal communication after concluding just the opposite: that social media, including BlackBerry Messenger and Twitter, are undermining its vibrant democracy. The plan touched off a fire storm in Britain’s social media community, igniting charges of an assault on free speech. But Prime Minister David Cameron made clear he felt the greater threat was allowing such violent speech to circulate. In an emergency session of Parliament on Thursday, Cameron said that officials were working to look at how and whether to “stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality.” The Twitter universe in Britain was among the first to respond to

The government announced it would start slapping “gang injunctions” — now used for adults — on underage teens, using court-ordered restraining orders to ban them, for instance, from wearing gang colors or walking around their neighborhoods with attack dogs.
Police have also been authorized to force suspicious people with their faces covered by, say, bandannas and hoodies — the uniform of British hooligans and gang members — to identity themselves. They are also reviewing the possibility of imposing curfews.
With London’s police forces stretched to the limit, Cameron said the government would draft contingency plans to have the army take over backroom tasks for Scotland Yard and other forces to free them up for street patrols in the event it became necessary. (T WP)

Cameron’s announcement, with irate comments f looding the nation’s digital space. But British police have already been monitoring social networking sites and pouncing. More than 12 youths have been arrested for using the Internet and text messages to incite unrest. Police in Greater Manchester fought fire with fire, issuing this warning from an official police Twitter account during Tuesday night’s riots: “If you have been using social networking sites to incite disorder, expect us to come knocking on your door very soon.” Experts warn, however, of technical issues in blocking or interpreting encrypted BlackBerry instant messages, which operate on a special network. British Home Secretary Theresa May, who is in charge of policing, said she would meet with representatives from social media companies to create a plan, though the government appeared to be testing public opinion before pressing on. Still, student activists decried the move as a full-on attack on freedom of expression, warning that the government could be going down a dangerous road toward silencing dissent. “This puts Cameron in very poor company internationally,” said Martin Young, 22. “This is the same reaction by the Middle East and North African governments which we condemned for having no respect for privacy and freedom of communications.” ANTHONY

No Ordinary Preseason Exhibition games gain new importance after NFL’s lockout
Ej^[h j^_d]i je mWjY^ \eh
J^[ H[Zia_di In this offseason unlike any other, each phase of the post-lockout NFL has taken on a heightened intensity — from the free-agency frenzy to the fanatical scrutiny of training camp. And so, when the Redskins line up tonight for their first “real” action against the Pittsburgh Steelers at FedEx Field, it will not be your run-of-the-mill preseason football contest. With no offseason workouts, limited practice time, injury concerns and a general sense of the unknown looming over the proceedings, the Redskins’ four preseason games will be more important than ever in shaping the look and feel of the roster. “It is a little different,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “These guys

are still getting into football shape. You have to decide how much playing time is appropriate to get your team to mesh.” Most veteran players approach preseason games with the level of enthusiasm reserved for a trip to the dentist. This season, however, several of the Redskins’ more experienced players have expressed a desire to get more time on the field to shake off the rust. “I’m going to get in coach Sha-
nahan’s ear and tell him that I want to get out there, that I need to get out there,” said nose tackle Barry Cofield, one of several new faces the Redskins are plugging into the system on the fly. Integrating rookies is another critical element of the preseason that will be different. Without having much time to learn and apply the playbook, rookies might be at a disadvantage during live action. Washington’s top pick, defensive
end Ryan Kerrigan, missed a chunk of camp with a knee injury before returning to practice earlier in the week, but he said he is ready for as much action as he can get. “I’ve got to be ready — I have no choice,” Kerrigan said. “I’m going to try and get myself as ready, mentally and physically, as possible. It’s my first NFL game. I’m dying to get out there and play.” Game shape is another factor to which Shanahan will be paying close attention. How will guys respond to going all out and getting hit? Will injuries increase? Will technique suffer? The Redskins have a lot of questions that aren’t going to be answered after playing the Steelers, but getting on the field will provide some normalcy, even for those who would rather be elsewhere. “My level of excitement is always the same around preseason,” receiver Santana Moss said. “My main focus is to go out there and do my job for however long I’m out there.” ELLIOT T SMITH

It’s Time to Start Looking Ahead
Im[d]Wb_
Next 2 months will be key to shaping the 2012 rotation
Latest QB Battle Is the Worst Yet
Chien-Ming Wang looked exceptional this week. Ross Detwiler looked pedestrian. It’s unwise to draw too firm an assessment from one start, or even a handful, but for the rest of the season, the Nationals will be watching closely as these two and others state their cases to reserve a spot in the 2012 starting rotation. With a little less than two months remaining before the Nats — and all the other non-playoff teams — pack up their lockers and disperse around the globe, manager Davey Johnson and general manager Mike Rizzo have cast this time as a period of heavy evaluation. With Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann and John Lannan likely locked into next year’s rotation, there remains at most two vacancies, depending on how aggressively Rizzo pursues majorleague arms in the offseason. So for Wang and Detwiler, as well as potential late-season callups Tom Milone and Brad Peacock, the pressure is on. Wang doesn’t necessarily fall into the young arm catego-

He’s struck out 125 in 122 2/3 innings and walked only 13. “He has probably been, if not the best pitcher, one of the best pitchers in the International League,” Johnson said. Peacock, 23, “tore up doubleA,” Johnson said, earning a spot in MLB’s Futures Game, a midseason promotion to Syracuse and likely an eventual look in Washington. Across both levels, he’s 12-3 with a 2.61 ERA, striking out 152 in 124 innings. DEREK TURNER

The first two outings were inconsistent, but he pitched six shutout innings on Tuesday, carrying a no-hitter through five and hinting that his once-dominant sinker may be rounding into shape.
“It almost feels the same,” said Wang, who at his best won 19 games twice with the Yankees. “The sinkerball was sinking.” The next night, Detwiler gave up three runs in five innings and took the loss. Johnson graded him at a “C-plus.” In 32 career games, 22 starts, Detwiler is 3-11 with a 4.44 ERA. Though a former firstround draft pick, his position in the

For 100 pitches Thursday afternoon, Zimmermann had been brilliant, firing his fastball past hitters, fooling them with his slider, gaining strength as the game wore on. It unraveled suddenly at the end. Zimmermann allowed home
runs on two of his final three pitches in the Washington Nationals’ 4-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigely Field, spoiling one of the few starts remaining before he reaches his innings limit and the Nationals shut him down for the season. D.C. is a city that thrives on quarterback controversies, so much so that last names aren’t really needed. None has ever really lived up to the original Sonny (Jurgensen) versus Billy (Kilmer) debate of the early ’70s, but Redskins fans always work themselves into a tizzy at this time of year. Babe (Laufenberg) never really challenged Joe (Theismann) but was a cult 8o CWjj favorite here. Later, Im[died Jay (Schroeder) had his supporters even when Doug (Williams) was on the roster. Not surprisingly, as the team’s fortunes have faded, the controversies have gotten a little less glamorous.

As it turned out, neither of the then-youngsters was any good. Brad (Johnson) versus Jeff (George) is just depressing to remember, as it was one of Dan Snyder’s worst — and earliest — cases of meddling. Later, Danny (Wuerffel) versus Shane (Matthews) summed up the Steve Spurrier debacle. As sad as those were, this year’s is the worst. Does anyone really think either Rex (Grossman) or John (Beck) is the answer? Leaving the QB position in their hands just seems like hubris on Mike Shanahan’s part. The competition will no doubt be the team’s top story, starting with Friday’s preseason opener, but the real winner will be the New York Giants — Washington’s first opponent when the games actually matter. Tom Soehn took over as interim coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps in May.
Soehn — a United assistant from 2003 to 2007, D.C. head coach from 2007 to 2009 and current director of soccer for the Vancouver Whitecaps— inherited acting head coaching duties for the remainder of the season after Vancouver boss Teitur Thordarson was fired in May. With Olsen, one of Soehn’s former players, suspended for Saturday’s match against the Whitecaps after being sent off during D.C.’s wild 3-3 draw with Toronto FC last weekend, Ashton will take the reins to set up the improbable coaching battle.
Gk_j[ W >Wiib[ Vancouver’s French striker, Eric Hassli, a preseason Designated Player signing, has proved to be worth every penny this season. A physical striker, his 10 goals are the second-most in MLS, and he’s been a handful for opposing defenses. He’s scored multiple goals on four occasions this season, including two goals in two of the Whitecaps’ last three games. “He’s just a big physical guy who has very good feet,” said D.C. United assistant coach Chad Ashton. “You give him half a step, he hits as heavy a ball as anybody in the league.” A.C.
Soehn’s connection to United doesn’t stop there, either. Back in his playing days, he and D.C. forward Josh Wolff were roommates when they were members of the Chicago Fire from 1998 to 2000. “I’m good friends with Tommy still today,” Wolff said. “His team [ref lects] how he is. He’s hardnosed, he works hard, and his group is doing that right now.” Despite having the fewest points in MLS, Vancouver (3-119, 18 points) remains a dangerous attacking side, as evidenced by its 4-2 beating of the Fire last weekend. With a new coach already hired for the 2012 campaign, its safe to say that the Whitecaps have at least one eye on the future. That hardly means they won’t try to maintain a role as 2011 spoiler for teams in the postseason hunt. “Tommy Soehn’s not going to sit idly by this year,” Wolff said. “He’s going to get the most that he can out of that group.” For this weekend’s tilt at RFK Stadium, that group should include strong striker Eric Hassli, playmaking midfielder Davide Chiumiento and Brazilian winger Camilo Sanvezzo. “Their attacking pieces are very dangerous. It’s a dangerous game for us,” said Ashton, who will try to guide D.C. to its first home win since May 4. AVI CREDITOR

When Tiger Woods stuffed his approach shot to within three feet of the pin Thursday morning at Atlanta Athletic Club’s 14th hole, the full brunt of a brutally hot day hadn’t yet settled over the course, and there was no telling what was to come in the first round of the PGA Championship. will.i.am MUSIC PRODUCER, TECH WHIZ, BLACK EYED PEA The stars come out for awards shows when they’re nominated. But now, they’re honoring science whiz kids. Black Eyed Peas front man will.i.am produced and hosts “i.am. FIRST: Science Is Rock and Roll,” a one-hour special that provides an inside look at the 20th Annual FIRST: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Robotics Championship. With Justin Timberlake, Bono and Snoop Dog making appearances, the ABC special (Sun., 7 p.m.) makes these kids the life of a tech-friendly, starstudded party. Why did you get involved with the FIRST championship? Inspiration. I’m the kind of person that when true inspiration calls, I answer and try to complement that inspiration. This “i.am.FIRST” is
the first show I’ve ever produced, and these kids reminded me what you can do when you’re passionate about something important. How did you get all your famous friends to be a part of the show? I just relayed to them my newfound inspiration. We all share the same perspective on the urgency of the issue, as far as putting these technology and innovation programs in every school across America. Do music producers like yourself make science seem cool to kids? Young kids already think science is cool; they just have to be reminded that the things they use are made possible because of science and technology. IPhones, Twitter, Facebook, Google: Engineers and scientists built them.
What can Washington do to help? Washington can stop talking and start doing. Not everybody is going to be Kobe Bryant, so why is there a basketball court in every school? Yes, sports make money, but NASA makes money; so does Lockheed Martin. Why not have an engineering program in every school?
Are you sad to see the space program ending? Yeah, it’s sad. I grew up mesmerized by NASA, but you know, it’s not over. A big space program ends and individuals who made money because of innovation are going to move forward — Richard Branson, the people that started PayPal and Virgin. That should tell the government something, right? Do you think that technology and fashion go together? In the future, technology and fashion will go together. Clothes will have more functionality. A hat won’t just be a hat anymore. It will be redefined to do new things. The birth of fashionology will come in the next five years. Is there a book you recommend to kids to help them innovate? Ha, yeah. A MacBook. K ATHERINE BOYLE (E XPRESS)

Of the course, the family of the Manolo was not rich. And more than once the 14 children of the Maria Jesus de Carmen and the Gustavo went to bed without the meal. Its headstrong flavoring has made evangelists of tipplers including James Bond and Julia Child. And it’s a simple-yet-complex pleasure: a distilled neutral grain spirit flavored with botanicals (mainly juniper), aka, vodka snazzed up. Yet gin’s most distinctive ingredient, juniper, stirs up some trouble. “People get afraid of gin,” says James Horn, beverage director and co-owner of Graffiato (707 6th St. NW; 202-289-3600), where his gin and tonic features lime-quinine ice cubes. “They associate it with their grandparents’ martinis, or they think juniper smells like cleaning solution.” Despite its bad rep, juniper was
once widely revered as a palate pleaser. It reportedly got its start in 17th-century Holland, where apothecaries sold it as a stomach medicine. Juniper berries made the potion more drinkable. “Gin is the closest thing to a legalized, mind-altering drug available,” jokes Umbi Singh, owner of New Heights (2317 Calvert St. NW; 202-234-4110), where the first-floor bar is dubbed the Gin Joint for its 42 types of the spirit and G&T tasting flights. Where the latter dissolves into its surroundings without individuality, gin counters with an unapologetic punch of personality. “Gin is effortlessly cool,” says Eleanor Maxfield, editor of “The Ultimate Cocktail Book” ($18, Hamlyn/Octopus). “It has a brutal side, and, while oozing with sophistication, it also has a curious air: that strange floral aftertaste, an unparalleled herbal tinge.”

?\ Oek @kij >Wl[ je :h_da 7 = J $$$ Like its namesake spirit, the gin and tonic was conceived as medicine: Tonic’s quinine — a bitter substance derived from the red bark of the cinchona tree — proved a malaria fighter for British colonists in the tropics. That wedge of lime? It helps prevent scurvy. Now imbibers turn to G&Ts to remedy summer heat and humidity. Luckily, it’s a basic cocktail. “The gin and tonic is paradoxical,” says Adam Bernbach, head mixologist at Estadio (520 14th St. NW; 202-319-1404). “It’s extremely simple — just gin and tonic water — but also incredibly complex, as both gin and tonic are full of botanicals.” Savvy bartenders start with their favorite gin and top it with a high-quality tonic, from artisanal brands such as Fever Tree, Q and Fentiman’s. Schweppes and Seagram’s are OK, too. New Heights’ Nicole Hassoun serves housemade tonics such as lime–orange blossom and hibiscus. Even ice, the G&T’s sleeper ingredient, deserves attention. Graffiato’s James Horn ups the ante with quinine-lime ice cubes. That sounds pretty chill to us. K.K.
1689, the year England imposed a ban against imported French brandy, a royal decree encouraged any British man, woman or child to distill gin. But like many coeds to follow, the Brits suffered a gin party gone bad. Its hangover? Alcoholism spilled across the countryside, forcing sales restrictions and price hikes such as the Gin Act of 1736. In 1830, a new style of distillation revived the spirit’s rep, a bright sip known as London Dry. Popular with Royal Navy Officers, gin jumped from the porch stoop to the parlor — and sailed to America with English sailors. During Prohibition, gin emerged as the booze of choice for home “distillers” — aka anyone with a bathtub and some grain. But its harshness left some Americans with a funny
taste for the spirit. By the 1980s, Time magazine pronounced the gin martini an “amusing antique.” Indeed, many of the most inventive gin cocktails date to Prohibition, including the Aviation (gin, maraschino liqueur, crème de violette) and the Corpse Reviver No. 2 (gin, Lillet, Cointreau, absinthe). With gin generally low-grade, creative mixing masked the bite. “Gin is one of the spirits of choice for most oldschool drinks,” says Owen Thompson, beverage director at food history-themed America Eats Tavern (405 8th St. NW; 202-393-0812), where he slings gin highballs such as Clover Clubs, with raspberry syrup and frothy egg whites. So it’s only natural that as trends focus on all things retro, gin has gotten its groove back. “For the longest time, vodka dominated what Amer-
icans drank, but gin is making a revival,” says Josh Berner, bar manager at Cleveland Park’s Ripple (3417 Connecticut Ave. NW; 202-244-7995). “Well-made cocktails have become popular, and those of us who make them like gin.” Though classic martinis still top cocktail lists, gin stars in less formal drinks, too — most famously, rickeys, and gin and tonics. The key is finding the right style of gin. For drinkers who only think of Lysol when they see that bottle of 8bk[YeWj" W Zho 7c[h_YWd ]_d" b[dZi YeYajW_bi Yh_ifd[ii$
Bombay Sapphire, a new generation of American gin distillers produce lighter, citrusy varieties like Bluecoat, an American dry out of Philadelphia with a crispyet-mellow finish, and West Virginia’s Smooth Ambler, infused with baking spices. Throwing Stones
DALE ROBINETTE
If Tate Taylor, below left, had not chucked stones at a preschool classmate 35 years ago, the movie adaptation of “The Help” might never have happened. The target of Taylor’s teasing that day in Jackson, Miss., was 5-year-old Kathryn Stockett, below right. “We were getting our pictures taken, and her eyes were disproportionate to her little body,” Taylor says. “I think I made fun of her. I think I threw rocks at her that day, as she tells it. And we just became friends.” Decades later, Stockett wrote “The Help” and hand-picked Taylor, now a filmmaker, to direct the film version. (T WP)
Skeeter, the white protagonist played by Emma Stone in “The Help,” is the only person in the Junior League of Jackson, Miss., who says “thank you” when one of the black maids refills her iced tea. In the film, which opened Wednesday, Skeeter also shares meaningful glances with the domestic workers, mainly Aibileen (Viola Davis) and Minny (Octavia Spencer), with whose help she’s writing a book about being a maid in the 8o Ah_ij[d 1960s South. This is FW][#A_hXo because Skeeter is a Good Person. She, who, like nearly all of the white women in the film, was essentially raised by a black maid, escaped the virulent hatred and even the casual racism that the rest of her childhood friends exhibit. How? People do not shrug off white privilege easily, even once they recognize it. Skeeter went from an actual plantation to Ole Miss, which I’m guessing was not a hotbed of racial consciousness-raising in 1960. She is just magically, emphatically not racist. And that’s the problem with “The Help.” Speaking as a nice white girl, it’s so easy for us to accept that we’re, well, accepting. Women like me will see “The Help” and think we’re like Skeeter because we have some black Facebook friends. Combating our privilege is something we have to learn to do, sometimes daily — and the fact that Skeeter does it in a world where her higher status is assumed as the natural order of things is pure fairy tale. It’s Not So Simple
Octavia Spencer, left, and Viola Davis, right, bring life to “The Help’s” beloved characters Minny Jackson and Aibileen Clark.
É>[bfÊ KdZWkdj[Z Viola Davis inspires in a story of race and class struggles in the Jim Crow-era South <_bc H[l_[m Next to “Harry Potter,” perhaps no book adaptation this summer has been more highly or anxiously anticipated than “The Help,” based on the 2009 surprise best-seller of the same name. Fans of Kathryn Stockett’s folksy, ingratiating novel can rest easy: Tate Taylor — a childhood friend of the author’s — has preserved the book’s story line, characters and confiding tone with loyal-
ty worthy of any best friend. Fair warning: “The Help” isn’t likely to win any converts among those who couldn’t abide Stockett’s dialect-heavy writing and earnest but self-congratulatory tale of a young white writer who strikes up a Jim Crow-defying friendship with black domestic workers in 1963 Mississippi. But readers who felt they came intimately to know such characters as Celia, Minny and Skeeter are likely to greet their alter egos on screen like cherished, long-lost friends — especially the nobly suffering Aibileen, here brought to quietly watchful life by Viola Davis. Emma Stone plays Skeeter, a recent Ole Miss graduate who gets a

job as a newspaper cleaning-advice columnist as the film opens. When she asks Aibileen for some tips, she realizes that the real story lies in the emotional life of black women who virtually raise their white employers’ children, but who are treated by those same families as unfit to
share a kitchen utensil, much less political or economic power. As gratifying as it is to watch Davis and Octavia Spencer bring Aibileen and Minny to palpable, fully rounded life, their narrative is structured largely around their white female benefactor. That this is the story we keep telling ourselves is all the more puzzling when viewers consider that, precisely at the time that “The Help” transpires, African Americans all over Mississippi were already registering to vote and agitating for political change. In other words, they were helping themselves. And, on screen at least, their story remains largely untold. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

<_bb[h" Dej A_bb[h ‘Glee’ is entertaining on the big screen but utterly unnecessary In the two years since “Glee” premiered on Fox, it has evolved from a quirky TV series about show choir oddballs to a revenue-generating juggernaut, one that has spawned 11 CDs, a series of novels, multiple DVD box sets, two concert tours and a reality show spin-off. Now we have the next step in the “Glee”-volution: “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie,” a 90-minute, multidimensional “Glee”-a-thon that contains highlights from a recent stop at New Jersey’s Meadowlands during this summer’s “Glee” tour. Filled with infectiously energetic renditions of pop tunes plucked straight from the show — from Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” to Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” — the movie is entertaining and, admittedly, completely unnecessary. Of course, hard-core “Glee” fans will undoubtedly give it two

set by spoiled brat Dwayne (Danny McBride) to steal $100,000. With a bomb strapped to his chest and only a few hours to find the money, Nick and his best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari), cut a manic, destructive swath through Grand Rapids, Mich., surviving a ballistic bank robbery and pulverizing car crash, and ongoing patter about sex, action flicks and sex. “30 Minutes or Less” plays like this summer’s latest — and lamest — panegyric to male friendship. FbWo_d] CAPTAIN AMERICA: FIRST AVENGER (PG-13, 125 minutes) The ultimate origin story of the original myth of Marvel Comics’ seemingly endless comic-book universe, the World War II-era drama returns to its classic roots with the squarejawed forthrightness of its straight-arrow protagonist. Even his name exudes an America that time forgot: Steve Rogers. “I don’t like bullies,” Rogers (Chris Evans) says simply before joining the U.S. Army in 1942. Director Joe Johnston has surrounded Evans with a wonderful cast of supporting players, including Stanley Tucci as the German doctor who turns Rogers from puny to magnificent; Hayley Atwell as a comely British military liaison named Peggy Carter; and the scene-stealing Tommy Lee Jones, who nails the movie’s most amusing lines as the crusty Col. Chester Phillips. A.H... THE CHANGE-UP (R, 113 minutes) “Freaky Friday” meets “The Hangover” in “The Change-Up,” a raunchy ode to guy-love in which Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds struggle valiantly to transcend the movie they’re in. As an arrested adolescent and incorrigible ladies’ man named Mitch, Reynolds has most of the funniest lines in “The Change-Up,” many of them vulgarities aimed at infants who smile beatifically at the verbal abuse. Daniel Craig battles against extraterrestrial invaders in “Cowboys & Aliens.” about a world ruled by apes, gets one thing exactly right. The apes, which we see on the cusp of world domination, are both terrifying and sympathetic. That’s not an easy trick. Yet it’s critical to this origin story, which charts the ascent of a hyper-intelligent chimp named Caesar (Andy Serkis, in motion-capture CGI) to the role of leader of an ape underground, after suffering abuse at the hands of a sadistic handler at a primate shelter (Tom Felton). Caesar and his simian followers are both relatable and scary as heck. Now for the bad news. The filmmakers seem to have spent so much attention and, presumably, money on getting the primates right that they completely forgot about the people. Led by a mumble-mouthed James Franco the cast of human actors is uniformly weak. M.O. THE SMURFS (PG, 102 minutes) Raja Gosnell relies on cutting-edge CGI and unnecessary 3-D wizardry to transport the pint-size heroes of the ’80s to noisy New York City. Once here, the Smurfs interact
with incredulous humans, impart a little homespun wisdom and help make our grungy existence a tad more animated. A paper-thin plot finds six Smurfs sucked through a magical vortex and dropped into Central Park. Hot on the Smurfs’ blue trail is evil sorcerer Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and his feisty cat, Azrael. Luckily, the Smurfs take shelter with gentle Grace (“Glee” star Jayma Mays) and her workaholic husband, Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris), who both need to be reminded that life moves pretty fast, and if you don’t stop to smurf the roses every now and again, you just might miss the special moments. SEAN O’CONNELL ZOOKEEPER (PG, 101 minutes) The film opens on a beach at sunset, where Griffin Keyes (Kevin James) has rented a horse and hired a mariachi band so he can propose to his girlfriend, Stephanie (Leslie Bibb). But she turns him down. Vapid and self-centered, Stephanie can’t get over the fact that Griffin’s a zookeeper. Thankfully, our hero finds motivational support from a friend (Rosario Dawson) and the animals at Griffin’s zoo. Faster than you can say “Doctor Doolittle,” the beasts in Griffin’s social circle begin to spew advice and dating tips. Lions voiced by Sylvester Stallone and Cher teach him not to be so cowardly. Then there’s a monkey voiced by Adam Sandler who suggests Griffin throw his feces at Stephanie — just what you’d expect a monkey voiced by Sandler to say. S.O. immediately makes his presence felt, swatting down a bully named Percy Dolarhyde (Paul Dano), whose father, Woodrow (Harrison Ford), owns a huge cattle ranch nearby. When strange lights appear in the sky and some of the townsfolk are sucked into hovering vehicles overhead, the taciturn Lonergan and the crustily misanthropic Woodrow Dolarhyde join forces to track down the interstellar outlaws and bring their people home. A.H. CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (PG-13, 118 minutes) “Crazy, Stupid, Love” opens with a clever montage of couples’ feet engaging in all manner of furtive flirtation under restaurant tables. When the camera lands on Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) and his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), their troubles are clear. She’s wearing comehither heels while Cal is decked out in shlumpy New Balance sneakers. She’s still trying, but Cal has given up, which accounts for why Emily announces at that same restaurant that she wants a divorce. He numbly agrees, moves out of their comfortable house and into a depressing bachelor pad and begins hitting a singles bar, where he comes under the tutelage of serial seducer Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), a playah Pygmalion who takes Cal on as a personal makeover project. What ensues is the kind of smooth, fitfully funny, finely machined romantic comedy that is expertly calibrated to hit all the rom-com happy places. A.H. FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (R, 108 minutes) Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake fairly set the screen on fire as cynics who agree to use each other for physical gratification but otherwise remain steadfastly un-love-struck. Kunis’ character is harddriving media headhunter named Jamie, a savvy consumer of romantic comedy cliches, who is nonetheless powerless to resist their happily-ever-after promises. After Jamie persuades Timberlake’s Dylan to move to New York to become art director at GQ, the two become best buds, deciding one drunken evening to step up their game. Kunis possesses particular zing as a tart, unsentimental romantic heroine. But if Kunis gets the showier role, Timberlake proves a quietly charming stalking horse, finally claiming and fully owning the spotlight with a hilarious homage to the 1990s rap duo Kriss Kross. Cry, Baby, Cry Anyone can dance to Michael Jackson. It takes commitment (and probably an unhappy adolescence) to really get down at Cryfest, the massive Cure vs. Smiths dance party that pits two of the whiniest bands of all time against each other. There are no winners here, except the sad pandas of the dance floor who feed off heartbreak the way the rest of us feed off Red Bull. But, hey, there are enough of those that this dance party exists! Full-On Funny The Gibson seems too small (and too classy) to be a performance space, but this weekend it will contain the Comedy Barbecue, which promises food and stand-up. The admission fee gets you into the show and a full plate of food. The 14th Street speakeasy is tiny, so make reservations.
