Austrian swimmer Josef Koeberl broke the world record Saturday for the longest time spent submerged in ice. Wearing nothing but a bathing suit, Koeberl spent 2 hours, 8 minutes and 47 seconds up to his neck in ice cubes in a glass box outside Vienna’s main train station. The previous record was 1 hour, 53 minutes and 10 seconds, set in 2014 by Chinese athlete Jin Songhao. Koeberl said he could have stayed in the icebox longer, but “I didn’t need to,” CBS News reported. (EXPRESS)

A drug charge has been dropped against a Georgia Southern quarterback after a white substance he told police was bird poop on his car’s hood tested negative for cocaine. Saluda County sheriff’s deputies pulled Shai Werts over for speeding July 31 in South Carolina and noticed two white spots on his car that they thought were cocaine. A field test came back positive, but a more sophisticated test later confirmed the spots were not cocaine. Prosecutors said the original speeding charge remains. (AP)

A sheriff’s patrol car crashed after being struck by a falling bear in Northern California last weekend. Authorities say a Humboldt County sheriff’s deputy was answering a report of a drug overdose in Orleans on Aug. 3 when the bear fell or jumped onto the car, apparently from a steep embankment. The bear smashed the hood and windshield. The patrol car hit an embankment, rolled onto its side and burst into flames. The deputy managed to escape without serious injury, and the bear fled the scene. (AP)

page three Trump sees rodents; shop sees dollar signs BALTIMORE When a Baltimore-based engraving shop pasted President Trump’s negative words about the city onto a blue coffee cup — “I love my disgusting rodent and rat-infested mess” — it was purely for the store’s owners and one employee to let off steam. “It was too good not to do,” said Robbie Marcouillier, the general manager of Chase Street Accessories & Engraving, near the office of Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md., in downtown Baltimore. “But then it just blew up.” The store posted a picture of the mug on Reddit late in the evening on July 27, the day Trump tweeted his remarks. The post eventually earned over 500 up-votes. Sales of the mug, which costs about $25, trickled in — a dozen the first day, up to about 100 the next and, as of Friday, close to 500. Long before the post went viral, Chase Street had decided it

would donate 10% of the profits from all mug sales to Thread, a nonprofit organization that helps underperforming Baltimore high school students succeed academically, personally and professionally. Chase Street has been sufficiently successful to break even so far, Marcouillier said. But sales numbers have “exploded” since they produced the mug. The store plans to keep selling the mug as long as there’s demand. It also has spun out a slightly cheaper ceramic version, as well as mugs, canvas tote bags and T-shirts that say “Rat-Invested: #WeAreBaltimore,” with the word “Infested” crossed out. Marcouillier has pulled several late nights to meet the high demand. Though the shop closes at 8 p.m., he stayed at Chase Street well after midnight at least four times last week. Each mug takes about 2½ minutes to manufacture. “At the end of the day, we’re helping people by donating to a nonprofit in our city,” Marcouillier said. “So I don’t mind staying up.” HANNAH NATANSON

POLITICS President Trump’s call last week for “common sense” gun control laws in the wake of recent mass shootings echoed Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam. But Northam, a Democrat, was unable to get state Republican lawmakers to take up gun bills last month after a mass shooting in Virginia Beach. Now that some national Republicans say they’re willing to act, the Virginia GOP is in an uncomfortable spot. Votes in Virginia’s election this November will determine the balance of power in the legislature. All 140 General Assembly seats are on the ballot, with Republicans protecting thin majorities. Swing districts are suburban areas where urgent concern about gun violence could sway voters. National gun control groups are making Virginia a referendum on the issue. Most prominently, Everytown for Gun Safety has hired four Richmond lobbyists and last month launched a five-figure digital ad campaign aimed at Virginia elections. Last week, after shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, left 31 dead, a national Democratic super PAC posted a video in which an interviewer tries to get four Virginia GOP senators to take a position on gun control

All four either said they opposed the measures or declined to answer. “We are closely monitoring what actions Congress may take,” Virginia House Speaker Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights, said Friday. “Congress signaling their willingness to act on these issues reaffirms the need to proceed in a deliberative manner.” Cox and other Republican leaders adjourned last month’s special General Assembly session after only 90 minutes. after the election. State GOP leaders favor increasing criminal penalties for gun violations and addressing mental health issues. Republicans also say they believe state laws enacted after the 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech are stronger than proposed laws. Republicans who don’t act will pay a political price, Northam said. “I want to tell the people of Virginia, if we can’t change minds, we need to change seats, and that’s why we have elections,” he said. “And I would ask all Virginians to pay special attention to this election on November the fifth.” GREGORY S. Company officials say they have revamped safety procedures to minimize the likelihood of fires involving damaged batteries, beefed up monitoring and inspections of equipment, and improved employee training. The company acknowledged that past safety lapses contributed to the recent fires. “We want a flawless safety track record, but we’ve made some mistakes in the past,” the company said in a blog post published Friday. “We didn’t just let our cities and riders down, we let ourselves down.” (TWP)

VIRGINIA The constitutional rights of a transgender student were violated when he was barred from using the boys’ restroom at his Virginia high school, a federal judge ruled Friday. The student, Gavin Grimm, said the ruling sent the message that “discrimination is not legal in America.” But the 20-year-old, who has graduated from high school, acknowledged that the school system could appeal, and it is “likely that this is not the end.” “We deserve equal rights,” said Grimm, who is studying in California to be a teacher. “I’m going to be doing what I can to fight.” In court, attorneys for the Gloucester County School Board argued that gender is not a “societal construct” and that Grimm has not undergone sex reassignment surgery and should not be allowed to use the boys’ restroom. Grimm argued that the policy violated the 14th Amendment’s equal-protection clause and Title IX, the law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in schools that get federal funds. Gavin Grimm, now 20, says his high school’s bathroom policy caused him emotional and physical distress.

She found the policy harmed Grimm, who felt “stigmatized and isolated,” avoided using the restroom at school, developed a urinary tract infection and experienced suicidal thoughts. “The perpetuation of harm to a child stemming from unconstitutional conduct cannot be allowed to stand,” Allen wrote. According to Joshua Block, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union who represented Grimm, students subjected to the rule can now “go right into court and point to this decision.” DEBBIE TRUONG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Racist’ label dogs Trump POLITICS President Trump considers himself a branding wizard, but he is vexed by a branding crisis of his own: how to shed the label of “racist.” As the campaign takes shape about 15 months before voters render a verdict on his presidency, Trump’s Democratic challengers are marking him a racist, and a few have gone so far as to designate the president a white supremacist. Throughout his career as a real estate magnate, a celebrity provocateur and a politician, Trump has recoiled from being called the R-word, even though some of his actions and words have been plainly racist. Following a month in which he leveled racist attacks on four congresswomen of color, maligned majority-black Baltimore as a “rat and rodent infested mess” and saw his anti-immigrant rhetoric parroted in an alleged mass shooter’s statement, the risk for Trump is that the pejorative that has long dogged him becomes defining. Being called a racist has infuriated Trump, gnawing at him in recent days as he lashes out — in tweets and in public comments — over the moniker, behavior his advisers and allies excuse as the natural reaction of anyone who does not consider himself a racist but is accused of being one. “For them to throw out the

race word again — racist, racist, racist,” Trump told reporters Friday. “They call anybody a racist when they run out of cards.” The president views the characterization largely through the lens of politics, said one close adviser, explaining that Trump feels the charges of racism are just another attempt to discredit him — not unlike, he believes, the more than a dozen women who have accused him of sexual misconduct, or the Russia investigation.

“The guy sends out blatantly racist tweets,” former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said. “White supremacist. Racist. Those labels are bad for business. … He’s upset about it because it’s bad for business.” Trump recently called himself “the least racist person anywhere in the world,” but his history is littered with racist and racially charged comments and actions. In 1989, Trump purchased

newspaper advertisements demanding the death penalty for the “Central Park Five,” black and Latino teenagers wrongly accused of raping a jogger in New York. In 2005, he pitched a culturally divisive spinoff of his reality television series: “The Apprentice: White People vs. Black People.” Trump then rose to political prominence partially by championing the racist birtherism lie that former President Barack Obama was born outside of the U.S. Democrats have engaged in semantic maneuverings about just how racist they think the president is. Former congressman Beto O’Rourke and Sen. Elizabeth Warren have said without hesitation that the president is a white supremacist. Trump’s allies argue Democrats risk overreach in maligning the president. “Democrats seem to forget that Trump supporters include blacks, whites, Hispanics and other minority groups who simply love this country,” said Mercedes Schlapp, a Trump campaign adviser, in a text message. Some Democrats seem cognizant of the danger. At last month’s presidential debate, Sen. Amy Klobuchar said, “There are people that voted for Donald Trump before that aren’t racist; they just wanted a better shake in the economy.” Yet, she, too, also felt the need to rebuke Trump. “I don’t think anyone can justify what this president is doing,” Klobuchar concluded. America’s one-way trip out IMMIGRATION About 45 minutes before descent, the guards went up and down the aisle unshackling the passengers, and the mood in the cabin began to lighten. A mother with a boy near the front was still crying, but they were the only family aboard the flight. Nearly all the other 93 deportees were men, and they began joking and talking excitedly. Soon Guatemalan territory appeared below. A cheer rose. “You see? They’re smiling!” said Matt Albence, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who spends a great deal of time defending his agency’s core functions, including this: a one-way trip out of the U.S. on ICE Air. “This is probably better than some of the commercial flights I fly on.” It was Albence’s first visit to Guatemala, the country that has surpassed Mexico as the largest source of unauthorized migration to the U.S. ICE Air, the agency’s charter airline, was bringing two planeloads of people to Guatemala on Thursday. President Trump has pledged to expel “millions” of immigration violators, a goal that wildly exceeds the government’s abilities. The reality is that Trump is losing on the ground: Since the start of the 2019 fiscal year in October, ICE has deported about 50,000 Guatemalans, but nearly five times as many illegally crossed the border into the U.S. during that time, leading to a record influx of families and children. In its efforts to deter Central American migrants, the Trump administration reached an accord with the Guatemalan government last month that will allow the U.S. to begin sending planeloads of Guatemalan deportees, as well as Honduran and Salvadoran asylum-seekers,

NICK MIROFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Acting ICE director escorts a planeload of deportees to Guatemala. He expects many more flights like it.

Deportees line up at an airfield in Alexandria, La., on Thursday as they prepare to fly to Guatemala.

Stories from the Guatemalan government’s reception center Luis de Leon, 28: Wearing the paint-streaked work clothes he had on when he was arrested during a traffic stop in Bowling Green, Ky., de Leon said: “There is nothing for me here. The only choice I have is to go back [to the U.S.].” He had been in the United States for seven years, dodging deportation. After a 2016 DUI, he said, he quit drinking. He said his wife and U.S.-born children — ages 4 months and 2 — are still in Kentucky.

Stephanie Barrios, 28: Waiting for her husband, who runs an auto repair shop in California, she said they plan to try to go back to the U.S. Two years earlier, she had been deported, returning to a country she left as a toddler. In Los Angeles, where she grew up, she was in and out of juvenile detention and used drugs. Now she works at a call center in Guatemala. “I hate it,” she said in unaccented English. A daughter, 8, is in L.A. with her grandmother.

Mixzer Ruiz, 28: He said he was a chef in Alexandria, Va., and his neighbors called the police during a fight with his girlfriend. Suddenly he was back in a country he left a decade earlier. “I feel great,” he said. “I have my daughter here. I left when she was 2 years old.” Alexandria court records show he was convicted of taking indecent liberties with a child by a custodian and was sentenced June 13. He was ordered deported last month by an immigration judge. (TWP)

to Guatemala City. ICE sends about nine flights per week to Guatemala. Its government has agreed to accept up to 20, with 135 passengers each, potentially turning the country into a kind of reverse Ellis Island — a repository, far from the U.S. border, for those the United States has rejected. Albence said he wanted to see

the process firsthand. The day before, ICE had raided seven poultry and food plants in Mississippi, arresting 680 workers, the agency’s largest workplace sting in more than a decade. Nearly 400 of those arrested are from Guatemala. Despite the scenes of anguished children without their parents, Albence called it a

“textbook operation.” No one was injured, and nothing had leaked out in advance. Authorities said many families were reunited once parents were processed and issued court summonses. But some children were left alone, and ICE did not coordinate with state and local child-welfare providers. The flight to Guatemala originated at an airfield in Alexandria,

La., one of ICE Air’s five deportation hubs, along with Miami; San Antonio; Brownsville, Texas; and Mesa, Ariz. About half the passengers on Albence’s flight had criminal convictions, ICE officials said, but the agency provided The Washington Post with specific information for just a fraction of those passengers. Some had been in U.S. jails and prisons for months or years, and for them, the flight to Guatemala was a relief, promising freedom. A Post reporter and a Univision camera crew were allowed aboard, though the journalists were prohibited from speaking to the detainees during the flight. In fewer than three hours, the flight erased a journey that had taken them weeks or months, often ending in a risky trek through the desert to remote areas of the U.S.-Mexico border. To return to spouses and U.S. citizen children and their lives in the U.S., they would have to do it again. A few on the plane were visibly excited, eager to see parents, children and siblings they had left behind years earlier. And when the aircraft screeched to a halt on the runway, the cabin filled with clapping and cheers. “We’ll all be back there in a month,” one deportee remarked in English as he and others crossed the airfield and filed into the Guatemalan government’s “Reception and Repatriation Center.” A Guatemalan official gave the deportees — now “returnees” — a stirring greeting. “You’re the lucky ones,” he told them, reminding the group that so many of their compatriots had perished during the journey to the U.S. “You’re back home with the loved ones who you left here to support. This country is and will always be your home.” NICK MIROFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

and prosecute his accomplices and enablers, and ensure redress for his victims.” Geoff Berman, Epstein the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, said authorities plan to keep open the investigation into those who might have conspired with Epstein to facilitate his illicit acts. “Today’s events are disturbing, and we are deeply aware of their potential to present yet another hurdle to giving Epstein’s many victims their day in court,” Berman said in a statement. “To those brave young women who have already come forward and to the many others who have yet to do so, let me reiterate that we remain committed to standing for you, and our investigation of the conduct charged in the Indictment — which included a conspiracy count — remains ongoing.” Staff discovered Epstein hanging in his cell, said people familiar with the matter, although it was not immediately clear by what means he was hanging. The Bureau of Prisons and Attorney General William Barr called the death an “apparent suicide,” though one official cautioned that the investigation was in its early stages. CRIME Jeffrey Epstein, the politically connected financier charged recently with sexually abusing dozens of young girls in the early 2000s, died Saturday after apparently hanging himself in a Manhattan cell, officials said, sparking outrage among victims who hoped to one day confront him in court and triggering multiple investigations into what happened. The FBI, the Justice Department’s inspector general and the New York City medical examiner all launched inquiries into how the high-profile inmate could have died in federal custody. The 66-year-old had previously been placed on suicide watch — though he was removed before Saturday — and was in a purportedly more secure unit of the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center, New York, when he was found unresponsive in his cell about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, officials said. His death short-circuits a trial that his accusers hoped would bring justice they felt Epstein had long evaded, and raises significant questions about federal prison officials’ ability to protect the lives of suspects in their custody. “Epstein is gone, but justice must still be served,” said Jennifer Araoz, who accused Epstein of raping her when she was 15. “I hope the authorities will pursue

Epstein updates Trump retweets conspiracy President Trump used Twitter to spread a baseless conspiracy theory about Jeffrey Epstein’s death. Trump retweeted a message suggesting that Epstein’s death might be tied to former President Bill Clinton. The claim is completely unsubstantiated. Jail failed to follow protocols Jail staff failed to follow protocols leading up to Epstein’s death, according to a report by The New York Times. Guards should have checked on Epstein in his cell every 30 minutes, but that didn’t happen in the hours before his apparent suicide, an official told The Times. including President Trump and former President Bill Clinton, was arrested last month on federal sex trafficking charges that could have put in him prison for 45 years. Prosecutors alleged he abused dozens of young girls at his homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Fla., and enlisted his victims to bring him others. Epstein’s case had attracted widespread attention — in part because of his wealth and political connections, and in part because of a lenient plea deal he reached more than a decade ago to resolve similar allegations. That 2008 agreement allowed Epstein to plead guilty to two state charges in Florida, avoiding federal exposure entirely, and spend 13 months in jail, with work-release privileges. nation+world Missiles fly anew as Kim attempts to restart U.S. talks, freeze out South NATIONAL SECURITY North Korea said Sunday that leader Kim Jong Un supervised test-firings of an unspecified new weapons system, which extended a streak of launches that are seen as an attempt to build leverage ahead of negotiations with the United States while driving a wedge between the U.S. and South Korea. The report by North Korean

state media came hours after President Trump said that Kim expressed a desire to meet again to start nuclear negotiations after the end of ongoing U.S.-South Korea military exercises, and that Kim apologized for the recent short-range ballistic launches that rattled U.S. allies in the region. In a separate statement Sunday, North Korea’s Foreign Ministry blasted South Korea for continuing to host military drills with the U.S., and said that future dialogue will be held strictly between Pyongyang and Washington and not between the Koreas.

At least 17 have died in Pakistan due to flooding from monsoon rains

South Korea’s military said the North on Saturday fired what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles. It said they flew about 248 miles before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Kim expressed “great satisfaction” over the launches, the North’s official news agency said. North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper published several photos that showed Kim watching from an observation post and what appeared to be a missile soaring from a mobile launcher. INJURY REHAB

Nats closer Sean Doolittle redeemed himself Sunday after blowing a save on Friday.

Nats exorcise demons

Bullpen finally comes through to avoid sweep and end the Mets’ 8-game win streak NATIONALS 7, METS 4 The bullpen door swung open, and out stepped Sean Doolittle. The Nationals’ closer jogged in to protect a three-run lead in the ninth inning Sunday, back onto the mound he had trudged off two days earlier, after he blew a save and before he talked about demons. The Citi Field speakers blared Billy Idol: “In the midnight hour … ” Doolittle entered with a 15.00 ERA against the Mets, and was just 1 for 4 in save opportunities against them. Against everyone else, he had a 2.06 ERA and had blown only two of 26 save chances. The first batter hit the ball hard but into a glove. The second didn’t hit the ball at all and returned to the dugout shaking his head. The last one, Michael Conforto, grounded to the shortstop, and when the ball nestled

in the webbing of first baseman Matt Adams’ mitt, it secured the Nationals’ 7-4 win. The Nationals’ six-game losing streak to the Mets was over. The Mets’ eight-game winning streak was over. Aided by Victor Robles’ leadpadding two-run homer in the ninth, the victory sweetened the series that had previously delivered two heartbreakers. First came Friday and Doolittle allowing four runs in the ninth to get walked off. Then came Saturday and Fernando Rodney allowing the tying home run and the eventual winning run to reach base in the eighth. Then came Sunday, offering absolution. It was simple. Soto injures ankle Nationals star Juan Soto was pulled from Sunday’s game after turning his right ankle running the bases in the seventh inning. half-game behind them. Doolittle came through after the bullpen had blown five consecutive save chances at Citi Field prior to Sunday, and its ERA of 6.07 ranked last in the NL. The Nats had reached Jacob deGrom for three runs in five innings but were tied 3-3 to start the seventh. Then they rallied. Adam Eaton began it with a one-out single off Robert Gsellman (2-3). Eaton reached third on Anthony Rendon’s single. After a pitching change, Juan Soto walked to load the bases and Asdrubal Cabrera lined Justin Wilson’s first offering into right field to drive in Eaton and Rendon for a 5-3 lead. Soto was tagged out to end the inning. The Nationals face Cincinnati tonight to start a six-game homestand against the Reds and Milwaukee. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Scherzer continues to progress On Saturday at Citi Field, Nationals ace Max Scherzer threw off a mound for the first time since hitting the injured list in late July with a mild rhomboid muscle strain. On Sunday, he woke up, threw again and “felt really good,” manager Dave Martinez said. The team is being cautious with Scherzer and wants to evaluate how he feels this morning before they take the next step in his recovery from the back problem. “We will see where he’s at tomorrow,” Martinez said Sunday. If Scherzer feels good today, the Nationals want him to throw a simulated game Tuesday at Nationals Park. It would be his first “game action” since facing Colorado on July 25. (TWP)

SECONDS TO PUTT

The number of seconds it took Bryson DeChambeau to hit an 8-foot putt Friday at The Northern Trust. The leisurely putt prompted players to criticize DeChambeau, and the PGA Tour said it’s examining its pace-of-play policy. Some of the biggest stars — including Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods — have recently expressed frustrations with slow play. DeChambeau was quick to defend himself Saturday. “When people start talking to me about slow play and how I’m killing the game … that is complete and utter ... you-know what,” he said. Quarterback has been vying for a starting job his entire NFL career REDSKINS It’s easy to suggest that little has been fair for Case Keenum since Denver traded him to Washington in March. After all, he nearly took the Vikings to the Super Bowl in 2017, and he signed the following offseason to be the Broncos’ starting quarterback. Then, just weeks

after the Redskins acquired him, they drafted the franchise’s likely quarterback of the future, leaving Keenum to fight Colt McCoy for the right to be what amounts to a placeholder starter until Dwayne Haskins is ready. In Washington’s preseason opener Thursday against the Browns, Keenum started the game with second- and thirdteam players. They faced most of the Browns’ defensive starters, including star pass rusher

For Keenum, it’s just another fight Case Keenum threw for 60 yards and a TD on Thursday against the Browns.

Myles Garrett. Yet asked about the unfairness of it all, after he was left exposed as the Cleveland pass rush rolled in, Keenum just shook his head. Unfair? He has been fighting

for an NFL job for eight years. Nothing seems unfair anymore. “It’s not tough,” the 31-yearold said. “I’ve been in this long enough for me to know we’re going to play with different

combinations of offensive line guys all year long.” Keenum’s career has included more than his fair share of unfair. He left the University of Houston as the NCAA’s alltime leader in total offense and touchdown passes. But he went undrafted in 2012 and had to scramble for a spot on the Texans’ roster, then bounced among the Rams, Texans, Vikings and Broncos over the next six years. He hasn’t complained about his circumstances; any questions about the quarterback battle have drawn quiet nods. After all of the other QB competitions in Keenum’s past, this is just a nother fight. Steelers wide receivers coach Darryl Drake died early Sunday morning, the team said. He was 62. “Darryl had such an impact on the players he coached and everyone he worked with throughout his entire career,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said. “He was a passionate coach and had a tremendous spirit toward life, his family, his faith and the game of football.” Drake, a native of Louisville, Ky., played at Western Kentucky. He spent one season in the Canadian Football League and participated in a pair of NFL training camps before going into coaching in 1983, with stops in at Georgia, Baylor and Texas. (AP)

Serena Williams wept as she took a chair, retiring four games into her match against Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu in the Rogers Cup final Sunday in Toronto and raising questions about her fitness for the U.S. Open. The 19-year-old Andreescu bent down to hug her and a trainer approached as a mic picked up Williams saying she had back spasms. The match followed the Friday semifinal between Williams and Naomi Osaka, their first meeting since Williams’ U.S. Open outburst last September. The U.S. Open starts Aug. 26, giving the 37-year-old Williams a little over two weeks to get on track. (TWP)

Emma Meesseman scored a seasonhigh 25 points, Elena Delle Donne had 23 points and 10 rebounds and the Mystics beat the Minnesota Lynx 101-78 on Sunday. Aerial Powers added 20 points and Myisha Hines-Allen had 13 for the Mystics. Washington (17-7) has won three games in a row and eight of its last nine. Ariel Atkins hit a 3-pointer that gave the Mystics the lead for good and sparked a 14-4 run that made it 25-16. Odyssey Sims led Minnesota (12-12) with 20 points and eight assists. Washington, which leads the WNBA in scoring (87.3 points per game), scored at least 100 points for the third time this season. (AP)

Logan wonders why Kendall doesn’t seem to be enjoying his massage.

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Why Women Kill’ Thursday on CBS All Access

Ginnifer Goodwin, Lucy Liu and Kirby Howell-Baptiste star in this darkly comic series about how three women — living in the same house in different time periods — respond to infidelity.

2 ‘Mindhunter’

A worthy ‘Succession’

The HBO hit follows up its breakout first season with more delectable family drama

TV REVIEW Having wormed its way into prestige television’s fragile psyche, HBO’s shrivel-hearted drama “Succession” returned Sunday as the show one loves to detest, or detests oneself for loving, or something in between. Despite its gloom, “Succession,” which is up for best drama series at this year’s Emmy Awards, is extremely watchable and about as easy to ignore as a hangnail. The show simmers with vile dialogue, spat and hurled among a family of 1-percenters, the Roys, who own a Murdochian media conglomerate, Waystar Royco, that includes an influential conservative cable news channel. The patriarch, Logan Roy (played with Shakespearean

fearsomeness by Brian Cox), is tormented by an unsolvable crisis: None of Logan’s adult children strike him as worthy or ballsy enough to inherit control of the company. Season 2 picks up in the forlorn wake of the wedding between Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) and her conniving yet dense husband, Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen, a show standout). Shiv’s older brother, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), knows that his standing with his father has rolled to the bottom of the hill, after a messy (and fatal) incident at Shiv’s wedding required Logan to call in his security team to cover it up. Kendall’s out, Shiv’s in (or so Logan leads her to believe) and, of course, there’s always their

New power players A key plot on “Succession” Season 2 involves a scheme by Logan Roy, head of the central Waystar Royco conglomerate, to purchase his bitterest rival: PGM, which is controlled by the Pierce family. The storyline provides delectable guest roles for Holly Hunter, as PGM’s chief executive, and Cherry Jones, as the Pierce family matriarch. H.S.

slippery, soul-perverted kid brother, Roman (Kieran Culkin), still awkwardly angling for Logan’s attention. Another brother from a different mother, Connor (Alan Ruck), is a trust-funded New Mexico space case who, to the family’s chagrin, declares

himself a presidential candidate, running on an anti-tax platform. But the real allure here, ultimately, has little to do with business. The show draws on the strengths of its ensemble cast to dig deeper into their personal problems, peccadillos and lasting emotional scars. What sort of family is this really? “Succession” prizes nothing more permanent than the day’s closing stock price, and a running tally of who’s up and who’s down. It’s a big show that resists direct comment on the big issues of the moment — the wealth gap, the Trumps, the 21st century. Instead, it’s an iteration on a much, much older story, about money and the corrosion of the soul.

‘The Hunt’ nixed amid backlash FILM Universal Pictures has canceled its plan to release “The Hunt,” a satirical film about “elites” hunting “normal folks,” in the aftermath of recent mass shootings and criticism from President Trump. “We stand by our filmmakers

and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film,” Universal said in a statement Saturday. The studio already had paused its marketing campaign for the R-rated movie, which was slated for release Sept. 27. ESPN pulled an ad for the film, prompting Universal to reevaluate its

refer to “The Hunt,” which calls the hunted characters “deplorables” and portrays them as gun-carrying white people. Conservative media hosts have also criticized the film. Fox News contributor Guy Benson said on air Thursday that the movie is likely to offend in light of recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas. “To have a movie, even though it’s satire, that depicts Americans hunting and killing Americans, I think that’s maybe not an image that a lot of people want to see at the moment,” Benson said. “The Hunt” stars Betty Gilpin, Ike Barinholtz, Emma Roberts and Hilary Swank. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have broken up after seven months of marriage, People reported Saturday. The couple, who tied the knot in December, had been dating on and off since meeting in 2009 while working on the movie “The Last Song.” “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers,” Cyrus’ representative said.
