Why do you keep running for mayor? We’ve become the international business brothel of the world. I feel that Washington makes Vegas look like the Vatican. And I wasn’t gonna be one of the people who don’t do anything. You’re a DC Statehood Green Party candidate this year. What’s your platform? Well before Faith Dane was a nine-time D.C. mayoral candidate, she starred in the 1959 Broadway show and 1962 movie “Gypsy” as Mazeppa, a horn-playing stripper. The 90-year-old, who goes by her first name alone, still uses music to get her point across: Her campaign posters depict her younger self playing a bugle, and her original songs continue to amuse and irritate at mayoral forums. We asked Faith how she keeps carrying her tune. B.M. arts. We had arts around the clock — painting, music, dance. And it was free! It was so therapeutic. How do you combine music and politics? I do a lot of singing at the forums. I don’t talk my platform, I sing it. What’s an example? A Russian aid convoy sets off Tuesday from near Moscow to Ukraine.
Is Russia sending a trojan horse? MOSCOW A long column of Russian trucks laden with relief supplies rumbled toward war-torn eastern Ukraine on Tuesday, unsettling Ukrainian officials who warned that any attempt by Moscow to deliver humanitarian aid without their consent would be treated as an invasion. The convoy’s departure — announced on Russian television as an Orthodox priest sprinkled holy water on the tractor-trailers — raised fears among Western officials that Russia’s planned aid for the devastated region was a ruse to boost the combat capability of pro-Russian rebels there. By day’s end, Russia and Ukraine appeared to have worked
out a rough agreement that Russia would deliver the contents of the 198 trucks to the International Committee of the Red Cross at a Ukrainian-controlled border post near the city of Kharkiv. But important questions remained about the logistics of delivering the aid to hard-hit areas of eastern Ukraine. The International Red Cross, which both sides said was tasked with receiving and then distributing the aid, said in a statement that it “is seeking more information” about the convoy and that it still did not have the security guarantees that it would require to operate in rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine. Lyft told CNN Money that 177 Uber drivers across the country have ordered and canceled more than 5,000 rides since October. On Monday night, as fans around the world began to grieve Robin Williams’ death, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent out what may be the iconic social-media image of Williams’ death: a still from the 1992 Disney film “Aladdin” — in which Williams voiced the Genie character — with the quote “Genie, you’re free.” More than 270,000 people have shared the tweet, which means as many as 69 million have seen it. The problem? It violates public-health standards for how we talk about suicide. “If it doesn’t cross the line, it comes very, very close to it,” said Christine Moutier of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. “Suicide should never be presented as an option. That’s a formula for potential contagion,” she said, referring to “copycat suicide,” in which media coverage of a death encourages other vulnerable people to commit suicide in the same way. The starry sky from “Aladdin,” and the written implication that suicide is somehow a liberating option, presents suicide in too celebratory a light, Moutier said. She has advice for those talking about Williams’ death: Be sure to acknowledge that suicide has underlying issues — and that those issues can be addressed. The focus should be on his incredible life. It shouldn’t celebrate or glorify how he died. CAITLIN DEWEY

The dangers of sharing ‘Genie, you’re free’ A man holds up a piece of police tape during a protest Monday in Ferguson, Mo.
Uncovering source behind city’s unrest Racial tensions are nothing new in Ferguson — and aren’t unique to the area FERGUSON, MO. The protests that have followed the death of Michael Brown are about an unarmed black teenager gunned down by a police officer on a suburban St. Louis street. But there is more to the anger that has taken shape in the form of dayslong rallies and nighttime confrontations: Many residents of Ferguson describe the episode as a breaking point. The town of 21,000 has been on edge since Brown, 18, and another teenager were confronted by an officer Saturday. Events leading up to the shooting were unclear. Police and the FBI have promised to investigate. But a day after Brown died, violence erupted. Stores were looted. A gas station was torched. Shots were fired at police. The unrest continued Monday night, when police used tear gas and fired “bean bag” rounds after a crowd turned rowdy.
Haiti recaptures suspected leader of mass prison break
Maybe it was how police reacted to what initially was a peaceful memorial service for Brown. Maybe it was the echoes of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen gunned down by a neighborhood watch volunteer. Maybe the crowd sensed police weren’t taking their concerns seriously. But before long, tensions boiled over. Some see the unrest as a Ferguson problem: About two-thirds of the city’s residents are black, but the law here is enforced by

an overwhelmingly white police force, a fact that helps engender widespread distrust of officers. Stephen Bussey, 29, said he was recently stopped by an officer while walking to a convenience store before his pre-dawn shift at a restaurant. “The cop told me I looked like a guy who robbed a bank nearby,” Bussey said. “I didn’t make a big deal about it. But since when is walking a crime?” Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said 50 of the city’s 53 police officers are white. While he says he has made recruiting and promoting black officers a priority, he admits it’s an uphill battle. “The minority makeup of this police department is not where I want it to be,” he said. But others insist that the problem isn’t unique to Ferguson. Antonio French spent most of Sunday taking photos and shooting videos in Ferguson as a memorial turned into an angry mob.

A PLEA FOR PEACE: Brown’s parents pleaded for peaceful protests in Ferguson, where the case has stoked racial tension, protests and looting. “I need all of us to come together and do this right,” said Michael Brown Sr. “No violence.” MICHAEL, REMEMBERED: “Big
Mike,” as some of his friends called Michael Brown Jr., wasn’t the type to fight, family and neighbors said. They described him as a goodhearted kid who wouldn’t have condoned the violence and looting that spread following his death. “He was funny, silly, he would make you laugh,” his father said, and when there was “any problem going on, any situation, there wasn’t nothing that he couldn’t solve. He could bring people back together.” (AP)
The St. Louis alderman said that for years he’s complained about how police operate in his predominantly black neighborhood. John Gaskin III, who lives in Florissant, a St. Louis County suburb, has similar complaints: “There’s a lot of angry folk. There’s a lot of people who want to make sure they’re heard. … It’s a national problem.” Tensions between police and black teens run deep, said Rod Brunson, a professor at Rutgers University. “The dynamics play out on the street everyday.” But Ferguson erupted. “And I don’t know what made it rise to this kind of level,” Brunson said. THREE POINTERS
Cy Young struggles
Middle man re-energized by new look REDSKINS The 2013 season was an erratic one for Barry Cofield. The nose tackle got off to a rough start when he broke his hand in the preseason and had to wear a protective club. During the first half of the year, Cofield was practically a non-factor as the Redskins’ defense struggled. However, the 30-year-old came alive down the stretch, playing his best football of the season as the Mike Shanahan regime crumbled around him in its final days. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett remains on the coaching staff, but there are plenty of changes to the game plan under new coach Jay Gruden. Cofield is excited that the Redskins’ defense has seemingly been unleashed from a conservative approach.
“I love the aggression and I love that we are playing to people’s strengths,” Cofield said. “We have a lot of talented guys with a lot of different skill sets on this defense, and this accentuates everyone’s strong points.” After hernia surgery kept Cofield out of OTAs and minicamp, the veteran from Northwestern looked spry and sharp during training camp, coming strong off the ball to disrupt running plays. “I feel great. I feel as comfortable as I’ve ever felt,” he said. “Everybody is going to be put in position to make plays, so I’m extremely excited.” At 303 pounds, Cofield is not a prototypical nose tackle — he’s about 50 pounds lighter than the average player at that position — but his size allows him to play both the run and the pass, which is what the Redskins hope to get out of him. “He has got to be the man in the middle,” Gruden said. “He has got to work on his pass rush,

Cofield excited to play in defense with more aggressive game plan
The Tigers’ Justin Verlander (4.76 ERA) has been awful, and he left Monday’s start with shoulder soreness. But he is not the only former Cy Young winner struggling in 2014.
Redskins nose tackle Barry Cofield had 32 tackles and 2 ½ sacks last year.
Returning home Twenty-one days after they reported to Richmond, the Redskins’ 2014 training camp came to an end Tuesday. obviously, but he is a tough guy and we need him. He is a good run-stopper, but he has also got enough juice to rush the passer.
He is one of those few defensive linemen that has the ability to do both.” The addition of Jason Hatcher along the defensive line should help Cofield and give the front seven a boost that can mask deficiencies in the secondary. “I think the sky is the limit,” Cofield said. “I think we all work together. We’ll be improved upfront with our additions and everyone just getting better together and growing together, and we’ll make the secondary’s life easier. Run game, pass game, it’s all one big machine. We all have to get better.” ELLIOTT SMITH (FOR EXPRESS)

The 2007 NL Cy Young winner was traded by Boston last month. With two teams, he’s 1-12 with a 4.73 ERA in 2014. His last win was on April 25.
1 Tim Lincecum San Francisco Giants
The two-time NL Cy Young winner threw a no-hitter on June 25, but Lincecum, below, has a 4.70 ERA in nine games since.
NBA
Clippers sale goes through
Steve Ballmer, left, officially became the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. The team said the sale closed after a California court confirmed the authority of Shelly Sterling, on behalf of the Sterling Family Trust, to sell the franchise to the former Microsoft CEO. Her estranged husband, Donald Sterling, had unsuccessfully fought the sale of the team he owned since 1981 in court. The NBA Board of Governors previously approved the $2 billion sale. WIZARDS
Scheduling gift In a sign of the Wizards‘ rising profile, the NBA has scheduled the team to play on Christmas Day against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. It will be the first time the Wizards have played on Christmas since 2008. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Zimmermann sports a 2.29 ERA over his past 12 starts this season NATIONALS Jordan Zimmermann says he hasn’t changed his approach on the mound, but the results have never been better. His strikeout percentage (22.3) is his highest since 2009 and his walk percentage (3.7) is at a career low. “I feel like I’m throwing the same pitches, setting guys up the same,” Zimmermann said. “They’re swinging through a few more balls than in the past.” Over his past 12 starts (going back to June 3), Zimmermann holds a 2.29 ERA. This season, he’s been most effective in the first inning, surrendering only

16 hits and two runs in 23 starts. He’s relied on his fastball, throwing it for a single-season career-high 67.9 percent of the time, according to fangraphs.com. His slider has been strong recently, though he’s using it slightly less than his career average. “Early on we talked a lot about

him not being able to find the slider,” manager Matt Williams said. “In June he found it. Other than the one start in Philly [on July 11], he’s had no issues with anything.” Zimmermann, who is scheduled to start in tonight’s game against the Mets, has worn down
late in games, though — as evidenced by a 5.19 ERA in the seventh inning. Last Thursday, in his last start against the Mets, the righthander put two runners on base who went on to tie the game at 3-3 in the seventh. The Nationals won 5-3 in 13 innings. In a July 28 start against the Marlins and up 6-0, Zimmermann gave up two runs in the seventh and the Nationals went on to lose 7-6. Despite some late-inning woes, Zimmermann has been efficient enough this season for the Nationals to rely on him every time he takes the mound. “He’s fun to watch,” center fielder Denard Span said. “As a defender, it’s easy to play defense when he’s doing what he’s doing.”

Sweet Thai chili Shrimp in peanut sauce
TWO OF A KIND
The initial sweetness of this peanut butter distracts you while a wave of spice from the chilies sneaks up on your tongue. It works well with foods that also have a hint of sweetness, such as shrimp and starchy pastas. We combined the two for a simple Thaiinspired noodle dish. Recipe (serves three) Cook a pack of udon noodles according to directions on bag.
CLASSIC
Mix 2 tablespoons of sweet Thai chili peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Toss noodles in sauce. Top with shrimp, cilantro, scallions and crushed peanuts.

“This cake reminds me of childhood and birthday parties,” says pastry chef Rebekka Baltzell. Made with Dutch cocoa powder, brewed coffee (for balance) and ganache frosting, it’s moist and pillowy at once ($6.15). “A lot of cakes look good but don’t taste like chocolate,” Baltzell says. “This doesn’t disappoint.”
Fredericksburg, Va., resident launched Sprelly — his line of flavored nut butters — and began hawking them at local farmers markets. Today, he sells up to 700 tubs a week (find him at sprelly.com) and plans to open a PB&J-centric restaurant and creperie in downtown Fredericksburg, also named Sprelly, in October. Here are ways to spread five of his most popular flavors till then. HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

“A lot of people tell me this is better than Nutella,” Silversmith says of this simple-yet-delicious peanut butter made from only three ingredients: peanuts, butterscotch morsels and sea salt. We think it tastes like the inside of a Butterfinger bar and couldn’t resist putting gobs of it on top of vanilla ice cream along with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
For this sweet smear, Silversmith simply mixes almonds grown in California with white chocolate morsels. The result is a dense, crunchy mixture whose richness pairs well with bananas. Silversmith plans to use this spread in a crepe with strawberries and raspberries at his Sprelly’s restaurant. “And who knows, maybe I’ll throw in a little bacon,” he says.
This childhood classic gets elevated once you add cinnamon chips to the equation. “I use chips instead of the spice because it melts into the peanut butter better,” Silversmith says of the baking chips he adds to his nut blender. The steel wheel makes quick work of the peanuts, and the friction heats up the mixture and makes for smooth blending.
The coconut oil not only flavors this versatile butter, but it also makes it more spreadable. “Cashews and almonds are dry nuts, so I add organic coconut oil to make it less chunky,” Silversmith says. We like it on old-school white bread with raspberry jelly, and Silversmith has plans to serve it grilled with coconut/pineapple jam, provolone cheese and smoked ham.

The Internet loves Trainor’s ‘Bass’ MUSIC Not everyone was initially “All About That Bass.” Meghan Trainor, the 20-yearold whose anthem for body acceptance has made her a breakout hit, said she pitched the track to other artists, but was turned away. “Labels were like, ‘We love it, but … you got to get it more synth-y, pop-y,’ ” Trainor said. Things changed when record executive L.A. Reid told Trainor she should be the voice behind the doo-wop pop song, and signed her to Epic Records. This week, the song jumped
20 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart to No. 8. The single has sold 389,719 copies so far in five weeks, and the music video, which has 13 million views, has become a water cooler topic. “Bass” features standout lines like “I ain’t no size two,” and “My momma, she told me don’t worry about your size.” Trainor said producer Kevin Kadish had the song title but didn’t know where to go from there. “I immediately thought, ‘Booty. Bass. Thickness,’ ” she said. Trainor, who grew up in Nantucket, Mass., recently moved

Freshmen change majors to DJing Paris Hilton has made $2.7 million — roughly $347,000 an hour — in just four days as a DJ at the club Amnesia in Ibiza, Spain, as part of a two-month tour, a source told The Sun. Hilton has not confirmed the sum, but The New York Post notes that she has been retweeting posts that mention her earnings. The Post quoted The Sun’s source as saying that most crowds are too intoxicated “to care that she’s simply pressed play on a Beyonce megamix.” Hilton’s tour will take her to France, Portugal, South Korea, Colombia and Spain before closing at Atlantic City, N.J.
