Two little brothers left a path of destruction in their German village Monday after running away from home. Police say the 4- and 6-year-old boys from Kulmbach stole a neighbor’s gas burner and torched parts of a garage, flooded another neighbor’s basement, then sprayed varnish across other neighbors’ doors and two cars. The boys were finally reunited with their parents, who are on the hook for about $17,000 in damage. (AP)

Police in Virginia say more than 50 old TVs have mysteriously been placed on front porches in a neighborhood outside Richmond. Henrico County police say residents found older-model sets outside their doors Sunday morning. Video from one doorbell camera showed a person wearing TV-shaped headgear while dropping off a TV. A similar incident occurred in a nearby neighborhood last year. It’s unclear if the incident is a crime. (AP)

A Poteet, Texas, woman returning home from work last Wednesday captured a video outside her front door that isn’t for the faint of heart. It shows a large black and gold spider, known scientifically as Argiope aurantia, eating a bat it had caught in its web, UPI reported. Annette Alaniz Guajardo posted the video to Facebook. In it, she can be heard exclaiming, “God, how I love nature.” (EXPRESS)

Antique store accedes to age Buffeted by changing tastes, the Brass Knob will close after 38 years GLUTTONY

JAHI CHIKWENDIU (THE WASHINGTON POST).

THE DISTRICT Selling antiques is a lonely business in Washington. And it’s about to get a little lonelier. After 38 years in operation, the Brass Knob, one of the last architectural-antiques stores in the region, is closing. In the District, where dozens of antique stores have closed in the past decade, the Brass Knob in Adams Morgan was seen by some as the last holdout against 21st-century market forces. Its departure in November will leave a gap for Washingtonians in search of 19th- and 20th-century salvaged architectural details, like doorknobs and light fixtures. The store’s closing will also mean the end of a small but devoted community of antique-lovers: art history students, museum curators and interior designers who came to swap notes, buy gifts and admire the detailing of old lampshades. “It was an institution,” said Patrick Sheary, a regular customer and the curator of furnishings for the Daughters of the

American Revolution Museum. “You relied on it to be there in the way that it’s always been.” Yet owner Donetta George said that “at some point, you just have to fold your tents and move on.” George opened the Brass Knob with a business partner in 1981. Business boomed in the first two decades but slowed in the early 2000s with the rise of online retailers such as eBay. Then the flow of customers dried up during the Great Recession, and the store never quite recovered.

George thought for years about closing, but every time, a customer would make a big-ticket purchase to tide the store over. Also, she owns the three-story building near the intersection of 18th Street and Kalorama Road NW and leased out the top floor for additional income. “Frankly, I think she kept it going for us, so we would have jobs,” said Kirk Palmatier, 64, who has worked at the store for 30 years. “If I were in her position, I don’t think I would have lasted so long.”

Palmatier said the store’s efforts to adapt — like launching a website — haven’t made much of a difference, in part because people are just not as interested in antiques as they used to be. Sheary, the museum curator, said homeowners today are looking to create minimalist interiors, with ready-made pieces from large retailers. “For kids now, a doorknob is a doorknob, as long as you turn it and it opens,” he said. D.C. received more than 6,000 rat complaints on its 311 number last year.

FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT The instructor had a warning for the students of the D.C. rat academy: Don’t tell onlookers what you’re up to. “We don’t want anyone saying, ‘Wow, there’s a whole academy and they are standing at the front door of this property,’ ” said Bobby Corrigan, an urban rodentologist leading the class. “You are just doing a survey. The word ‘rat’? I rather you not drop the word ‘rat.’ ” On a recent afternoon in Adams Morgan, about 30 property managers, private exterminators and local government employees filled a basement conference room at the Line Hotel to train as soldiers in D.C.’s never-ending war on rodents. Soon they would enter enemy territory: an alley, a tiny park and a row of restaurants. The annual two-day rat academy came as rodent complaints reach record highs in the District. The city received more than 6,000 rat complaints to its 311 service request number last year, up from about 5,000 in 2017. After experimenting with dry ice and solar trash cans, city officials are testing sterilization — to keep rats from reproducing — as the newest weapon. It’s been tried elsewhere, including New York City, with some success. At the rat academy, students sat through presentations on spotting signs of infestation and obtaining permits to apply pesticides. Gerard Brown, who leads the rat control division of the D.C. health department, said he relocated the rat academy from downtown to Adams Morgan so students can gain practical experience on the front line. The neighborhood has a bustling dining scene and plentiful trash — ideal conditions for rodents. It’s also where he grew up.

A camera in Adams Morgan records the effects of a new rat deterrent.

“When I was a little boy, the rats were in this alley,” said Brown, 63. “Now we’re dealing with the great-great-grandkids of those rats.” Health officials are trying to stop the next generation by placing bait boxes in nine locations across the city. The boxes contain a compound designed to interfere with ovulation in female rats and with sperm production in male

rats. The bait is a sweet, fatty liquid that appeals to rodents. “You know how the food is so good you lick the plate?” Brown said. “They are starting to eat the container.” But the city lacks data. In the alley, the city’s contractor for rat sterilization added a camera to measure the effects. “The idea is, we don’t see baby rats,” Brown said. “If there are a lot of juveniles and babies running around, we know something is not right.” Already, something was not right. Brown hadn’t received any photos of rats. He figured the camera must be in a bad location. It’s not like there were no rats around to say cheese. Cases in point: The carcass caught in a nearby snap trap, the sunbaked body near a restaurant and a creature hobbling under a dumpster. Dan Coats was among the academy students scoping out the area near the hotel. He came to the academy because workers at several properties he oversees in Northwest D.C. have been trying to keep rodents at bay. Coats grew frustrated as he spotted open dumpsters, unsealed doors and other mistakes beckoning rodents. No single entity is in charge of rat abatement for the neighborhood, where businesses hire private pest control companies to operate separately from government efforts. “It’s a public health risk,” Coats said to Brown. As students filed back into the basement room, their instructor warned they got just a taste of the complicated battle. “People think: Just put out a bunch of poison and kill them,” Corrigan said. “You are now trained to see what others are overlooking.” FENIT NIRAPPIL

VIRGINIA A Republican candidate for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors died Sunday after experiencing a heart attack at the end of a day of campaigning, his family and friends said. Paul Bolon, 69, complained of chest pains while walking through the county’s Providence District to introduce himself to voters, said Andrea Bayer, a school board candidate who was with Bolon on Sunday. He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital and died a few hours later, his family said. “We’d been knocking on doors all day,” Bayer said Tuesday. “But we weren’t doing any hills, and it was cool outside. We were laughing.” Bolon, a retired manager at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, was competing in the November elections against Democrat Dalia Palchik for the county board seat being vacated by Linda Smyth, D. Bolon had said he planned to advocate for more schools in northeast Fairfax and hoped to eliminate wasteful spending. Palchik called Bolon a fairminded opponent. “We were both looking forward to honestly debating important issues, at a time of such bickering and division,” she said in a statement. Tim Hannigan, the chair of Fairfax County’s Republican Committee, said the party will seek a replacement candidate.

THE DISTRICT The D.C. Catholic priest charged with sexually assaulting two children who were members of his Northwest Washington parish, took the witness stand in court this week and repeatedly denied ever touching the girls. For two days, the Rev. Urbano Vazquez, calmly told jurors he was never alone with any children from the church and that he never inappropriately touched or kissed any children. Vazquez, 47, was arrested last year and charged with four felony counts of second-degree child sexual abuse and one misdemeanor count of child sexual abuse. He is accused of groping a 13-year-old girl and kissing and groping a 9-year-old girl in 2016. Prosecutors say the incidents happened when Vazquez was serving as an assistant pastor at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Columbia Heights. Last week, the youngest victim, now 12, testified in D.C.

Superior Court that Vazquez groped her repeatedly when the two were alone in the church and how she was afraid to tell anyone because she feared he would “rape” her. Another victim said he assaulted her during confession. On Monday, Vazquez repeatedly denied any of the incidents happened. He described his duties at the church and various missionary trips to El Salvador. During questioning by one of his attorneys, Vazquez said he was never alone with any of the alleged victims. On Tuesday, Vazquez was cross-examined by prosecutors, who ultimately got him to admit he lied to two supervising priests to gain approval for time off, while secretly planning a trip to Cancun with a female friend. Vazquez did recall telling supervisors, who had questioned him about one alleged incident, that he could not have assaulted one of the girls because a boy had been sleeping in the same room. Jurors could begin deliberations as early as Wednesday afternoon. KEITH L. ALEXANDER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Mayor Muriel Bowser said the city won’t accept a facility to house migrants.

D.C. mayor rejects federal shelter plan Child migrant facility proposed for Takoma draws broad criticism THE DISTRICT D.C. officials and immigration advocates on Tuesday criticized plans by the federal government to house unaccompanied migrant children in Washington. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, said the city has “no intention” of accepting such a facility, echoing opposition from elected officials in Northern Virginia, who are protesting a proposal by the Trump administration to build a permanent shelter there for unaccompanied minors. Bowser was reacting to an application from Dynamic Service Solutions, a federal contractor, to open a temporary shelter for children in D.C. The company has been advertising job listings for educators, caseworkers and medical staff. City officials said they were under the impression that the shelter could house as many as 200 children and would be located in Takoma, the Northwest D.C. neighborhood near the Maryland border. Democrats and some Republicans have objected to the Trump administration’s handling of

immigration at the southern border, including separating children from families and holding immigrants in squalid conditions. “Washington, D.C. will not be complicit in the inhumane practice of detaining migrant children in warehouses,” Bowser said in a statement. “We have no intention of accepting a new federal facility, least of all one that detains and dehumanizes migrant children.” The D.C. Child and Family Services Agency, which must license such a facility, received an application from the contractor but found it “inadequate,” according to a D.C. official who spoke anonymously. Advocates are pressing city officials to stop the shelter. “So many of us in the Latino community are opposed to this happening anywhere in the United States, but certainly not when it’s in our backyard,” said Maria Gomez, president and chief executive officer of Mary’s Center, a community health center. Council member Brianne Nadeau, D-Ward 1, is considering legislation that would cap the number of youths who could be placed in a facility as a way to block the shelter for unaccompanied minors. But by late afternoon, with protesters using luggage carts as makeshift barricades and blocking passengers from reaching the departure gates, causing long lines, authorities said they were suspending check-in at both of the airport’s terminals. HONG KONG Riot police armed with pepper spray and batons clashed with protesters late Tuesday at Hong Kong’s airport, bringing violence to the key international hub while passengers remained stranded inside after many departing flights were canceled. The police intervened after a frenzied mob of protesters seized a man, claiming he was an undercover Chinese police officer, and blocked paramedics from transporting him for hours after he lost consciousness. Later Tuesday night, the group seized a second Chinese man, identified by his documents and his editor as a reporter for the Global Times, the Chinese Communist Party-run newspaper. The incidents marked a brazen escalation by protesters in confronting those they perceive as infiltrators from mainland China and capped a second consecutive day of chaos at Hong Kong’s airport, among the busiest in the world. Authorities have been unable to quell months of dissent in the financial hub. After mass cancellations Monday evening, flights had been gradually returning to normal throughout Tuesday, even as thousands of black-clad demonstrators returned to occupy parts of the airport, carrying placards denouncing police brutality and calling for freedom for

nation+world Lawmakers will end recess early to put pressure on McConnell POLITICS A House panel with jurisdiction over firearms is expected to return early from the six-week congressional recess to consider additional gun control measures in hopes of upping pressure on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to act. But there’s one problem: Democrats are privately sparring over what exactly to approve. House Democrats universally agree on expanding background checks, legislation they easily passed in February. They’ve also coalesced around proposals

restricting high-capacity magazines, instituting “red flag” laws that keep guns from individuals showing warning signs of violence, and potentially even legislation on hate crimes — ideas the House Judiciary Committee is expected to consider the week of Labor Day, according to two people familiar with the plan, a week before the full House is officially scheduled to return. Many liberals — including Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., a member of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s leadership team — want a vote on an assault weapons ban, like the one that expired 15 years ago. Cicilline’s version of such a bill has nearly 200 co-sponsors. But Pelosi’s team worries that the chamber won’t have the votes

EVIA, GREECE | Farmers carry beehives Tuesday during a forest fire in Psachna village. More than a thousand firefighters battled wildfires Tuesday in Greece. The largest burned out of control through a nature reserve on the island of Evia north of Athens, causing four villages — including Psachna — and a monastery to be evacuated. The country’s civil protection authority declared a state of emergency in the area of Evia affected by fire.

Doctors in Congo claim 2 patients are cured of Ebola after treatment with new drugs

ENVIRONMENT Each time someone in Pakistan runs out to the store for a carton of milk, a half-pound of loose sugar or an after-school snack, it comes in a flimsy plastic bag that usually gets thrown away. If all those bags are added up, officials estimate, they total 55 billion a year. Easily torn and too weak to use again, they end up clogging city drains and sewers, ingested by grazing goats and dogs foraging for food, and polluting canals and streams. Now, the government is about to take a drastic first step toward eliminating this public eyesore and environmental hazard. Beginning today, all single-use polyethylene bags will be banned in Islamabad, the capital region of about 1.5 million people. Anyone who uses, sells or manufactures them will face a fine. “This is something we have to do. You cannot burn, bury, reuse or recycle these bags,” said Malik Amin Aslam, a senior official at the Ministry of Climate Change. “The health of 200 million people is at stake.” The ban is the latest project in Prime Minister Imran Khan’s green initiative, which began last year with a campaign to plant 10 billion trees. It also follows similar actions in other developing countries, such as Kenya and Tanzania, where discarded plastic has become a noxious scourge. More than 40 countries have now either banned or taxed single-use plastic bags. PAMELA CONSTABLE (TWP)

‘It’s not as easy as it was’ Many U.S. employees feel devalued even in a booming job market

Today, at 56, White does similar work managing technology projects for a regional bank. And yet everything feels different. He is a contractor for a technology services firm that assigns him to the bank. He is paid less, and the bonuses and stock awards he once earned as a full-fledged employee are long gone. For all the U.S. economy’s robust job growth, White and many people like him don’t feel much like beneficiaries of what is now the longest expansion on record. The kinds of jobs they once enjoyed — permanent positions, with stability, bonuses, pensions, benefits and opportunities to move up — are now rarer. “It’s not as easy as it was,” White says. White’s evolution from employee to contractor is emblematic of a trend in the American workplace a full decade after the recession ended: The economy keeps growing. Unemployment is at a half-century low. Yet many people feel their jobs have been devalued by employers that increasingly assign a higher priority to shareholders and customers. Economic research, governEc ment data and interviews in with

workers sketch a picture of lagging wages, eroding benefits and demands for employees to do more without more pay. The loyalty and security that many say they once felt from their employers have diminished, and with it some measure of their satisfaction. Experts point to a sea change in the American job experience that began decades ago but has grown more visible across a wider spectrum of jobs. They see a confluence of forces squeezing

Growing dissatisfaction An analysis of the 2018 General Social Survey found a rise in people saying their workplace has grown more demanding. Around one in three workers said they now face too much work to do everything well. About one in five said they held a job other than their main one. About threequarters said they had to work extra hours beyond their usual schedule at least one day a month. All those numbers are up from 2006. (AP)

workers — from globalization and workplace automation to a decline of labor unions, fiercer price competition and a growing use of outside firms and contractors. At the same time, the gulf between CEO pay and median worker pay has widened. Publicly traded companies are increasingly plowing cash into stock buybacks and shareholder dividends. Many measures of inequality still have not returned to where they were before the recession: The wealthiest Americans now hold a greater share of the nation’s wealth. Middle-income households have less home equity. Median household income, adjusted for inflation, has barely budged in two decades. And an analysis by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis found that corporate profits have far outpaced employee compensation since the early 2000s. The median pay of CEOs of companies in the S&P 500 index who have been in their job for at least two years jumped from $9.6 million in 2011 to $12 million last year. To earn as much as the CEO does in one year, a typical employee at most big companies in 2018 would have to work 158 years. “We’ve made decisions and baked into the structure this extreme inequality at this point,” said Barbara Dyer of the Good Companies, Good Jobs Initiative at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. “It’s a function of a lot of choices that we may not have even been conscious of.” MICHELLE R. SMITH (AP)

Three dogs die after swimming in toxic algae WILMINGTON, N.C. It took 15 minutes for the playdate to turn deadly. Melissa Martin and Denise Mintz’s three dogs — Abby, Izzy and Harpo — had spent Thursday evening romping in the mud and chasing their ball at a pond in Wilmington. The evening getaway was a welcome reprieve from the late-summer heat. But unbeknownst to the dogs and their owners, the relentless August sun had also made the pond a bathtub of toxins. A poisonous microscopic bacteria called blue-green algae had grown in the water, a threat Martin and Mintz did not know about until it was too late. On their way home, Abby, a white West Highland terrier, fell first and began to seize, Martin told CNN. They rushed to a veterinary hospital, where Izzy, also a Westie, began seizing as well. Then 6-year-old Harpo, a doodle mix that worked as a therapy dog for hospital patients, fell ill, too. By midnight, Martin told CNN, all three dogs were dead. Martin told the network she now hopes to help prevent more dog deaths by educating pet owners about the deadly algae blooms and advocating for warning signs near ponds, lakes and canals where the toxins have taken over. “I will not stop until I make positive change,” she told CNN. “I will not lose my dogs for nothing.” KATIE METTLER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Holiday tariff reprieve

President Trump’s delay of new tariffs could shield consumer products from price hikes.

By the numbers Rising tensions over trade have dimmed Americans’ opinions of China, according to these figures from a Pew Research Center poll of 1,503 adults from May 13 to June 18 that was released Tuesday. (AP)

The percentage of Americans who regard China as America’s top threat for the future, the same percentage that said so of Russia. North Korea (12%) was the only other country to draw double-digit concern.

“based on health, safety, national security and other factors.” Trump, in a Twitter post and comments to reporters, suggested that the announcement

was meant as an overture to Chinese officials. “I’m not sure if it was the tariffs or the call, but the call was very productive,” Trump said, referring to a conversation this week between top Chinese and U.S. negotiators. But he added a warning on Twitter that China needs to buy more from the United States: “As usual, China said they were going to be buying ‘big’ from our great American Farmers. So far they have not done what they said. Maybe this will be different!” USTR provided a list of products that were exempted and would face the delayed tariff implementation date, which included highchairs, strollers, cellphones and many toys. Many businesses had worried that higher tariffs on consumer goods ahead of the Christmas shopping season could severely damage the economy at a time when some are warning that the risk of a recession next year has increased. The tariff delay is likely to keep retail shopping strong this year, many economists say, but it does nothing to alleviate the confusion and uncertainty over what Trump will do next in the trade battle. “Recession risks are elevated,” said Michelle Meyer, head of U.S. economics at Bank of America. “Uncertainty remains very high. Until there is a clear resolution, which we do not think will come before the end of next year, businesses will remain cautious in regards to investment.” Meyer now predicts a 1-in-3 chance of a recession in the coming year, as businesses have already pulled back on spending and are showing early signs of slowing down hiring as well. BUSINESS The White House on Tuesday said it would delay imposing tariffs on Chinese imports of cellphones, laptop computers, video game consoles and certain types of footwear and clothing until Dec. 15, significantly later than the Sept. 1 deadline President Trump had repeatedly threatened. The announcement, which came from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), ensures that Apple products and other major consumer goods would be shielded from the import tax until at least December, potentially keeping costs on these products down during the holiday shopping season. The announcement moved stocks sharply higher. The Dow Jones industrial average climbed close to 500 points, or nearly 2%, on the news. The stock prices of Apple, Best Buy, Mattel and Macy’s were among those that rallied on the announcement. Trump told reporters that he delayed the tariffs “just in case” they would have a negative impact on U.S. shoppers this holiday season, marking the most explicit admission he’s made so far that the tariffs could have raised costs for American consumers and businesses and had a negative impact on the economy. “What we’ve done is we’ve delayed it so they won’t be relevant in the Christmas shopping season,” Trump said. “Just in case they might have an impact on people.” A number of companies had petitioned to the White House to exempt items they import from the new tariffs, saying the costs would be either passed along to the consumer or threaten the solvency of individual firms. USTR said the 10% tariff would

CBS and Viacom agree to reunite as media giants MEDIA CBS and Viacom announced a long-anticipated reunion Tuesday, bringing together their networks and the Paramount movie studio as traditional media giants bulk up to challenge streaming companies like Netflix. Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, who will become CEO of the combined company, said the new ViacomCBS will be “one of only a few companies with the breadth and depth of content and reach to shape the future of our industry.” Viacom owns Paramount Pictures and pay TV channels such as Comedy Central, MTV and BET, while CBS has a broadcast network, television stations, Showtime and a stake in The CW over-the-air network. MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson said Paramount’s movie library could be added to Showtime’s premium networks and streaming service, for instance, while CBS’ streaming service could get a boost from Viacom’s Nickelodeon video. The deal is an all-stock transaction. CBS shareholders will own about 61% of the combined company and Viacom shareholders will own 39%. The companies say the combined company will have $28 billion in revenue. The reunion, expected to be completed by the end of the year, will be beneficial to earnings and lead to $500 million in cost savings, the companies say. MAE ANDERSON (AP)

Either Case Keenum, far left, or Dwayne Haskins will be the Redskins’ 25th starting QB since 1993.

For now, for later: Keenum leading as Haskins awaits Case Keenum has a clear path to becoming the Redskins’ starting quarterback. With Colt McCoy watching practice from the sideline Tuesday and Dwayne Haskins still looking at times like the rookie he is, Keenum worked regularly with first-teamers in the final practice before Washington faces the Bengals on Thursday (7:30 p.m., NBC/ NBCSW) at FedEx Field. Coach Jay Gruden said McCoy was sidelined by soreness but might still play Thursday. Regardless of McCoy’s stao tus, the pecking order hasn’t

really changed since spring. Keenum has looked like the more polished passer throughout camp over McCoy, whose health problems cost him two previous chances to remain the Redskins’ starter. Now Keenum has a clear edge over his veteran counterpart, while Haskins’ steady improvement might make him the No. 2 option no matter who starts. Keenum is savvy and clearly has a stronger arm than McCoy, who is better at short- to medium-range throws. Keenum is benefiting from working more with the starters and seems to have a better feel for playing behind this offensive line of unknowns.

On the left side, tackle Geron Christian and guard Ereck Flowers have a slight edge to win the starting jobs, but tackle Donald Penn and guard Wes Martin are still in the running. No matter who starts on the line, a passer needs to have an internal clock on the blindside pass rush. Keenum clearly has a better understanding of how much time he has in the pocket than Haskins, who took a bad sack in the 30-10 loss at Cleveland in the preseason opener. The rookie froze at the sight of a rusher in his face. Maybe McCoy will make a late bid, but he’ll really have only the third preseason game to do so. The preseason finale is mostly for reserves fighting for roster spots. Unless Keenum plays poorly against Cincinnati, Gruden seems comfortable opening the season with him. Haskins could seal the job with a standout effort Thursday, and McCoy needs to come on strongly to have any shot. The quarterback battle is

partly two competitions — one for now and one for 2020. Haskins is the team’s future after he was drafted 15th overall in April, but he’s still working out the kinks. His footwork can be a mess at times, leading to one of his two interceptions against Cleveland. Haskins also regularly throws the ball high, which decreases completion percentage and increases injuries to receivers. The Redskins want to be more patient with Haskins than they were with Robert Griffin III in 2012, and Keenum was acquired as a stopgap starter anyway. The quarterback carousel of last year — when four passers started — seems destined for another go-around. The Redskins appear incapable of settling on just one QB — either Keenum or Haskins will become the 25th starting quarterback since 1993. For now, though, Keenum looks like the front-runner.

Rebuffed in his efforts to continue wearing a banned helmet, Antonio Brown has turned to his 1.4 million Twitter followers for help. “I’m looking for a Schutt Air Advantage Adult Large Helmet that was manufactured in 2010 or after,” he tweeted Tuesday. “I will trade a signed practice worn @Raiders helmet.” Brown fought to keep wearing the helmet he’s worn throughout his 10-year career, but players aren’t allowed to wear helmets more than 10 years old. He even tried to have the one he brought with him from Pittsburgh painted in Raiders colors. Brown’s been told that he can use that model helmet if he can find one that’s newer, but it was discontinued by Schutt eight years ago. (TWP)

Junior transfer returns to old position as Md. looks for go-to receiver MARYLAND Former Virginia Tech receiver Sean Savoy transferred to Maryland as a defensive back. To him, that didn’t matter. He was where he wanted to be. With the declining health of his mother, who had a rare connective tissue disease and died last winter, the Washington native wanted to be close to home. “It really wasn’t about playing

football,” Savoy said. “It was just that I wanted to be here, be in school, fulfill my dream.” Savoy joined a talented group of transfers signed to bolster a team that won just five games last season. The junior practiced with the defensive backs all spring and was moved to his old position this summer. Maryland has plenty of depth at receiver. Through fall camp, new coach Mike Locksley has said he’s looking for more out of the group that recently lost Jeshaun Jones for the season to a torn ACL. Locksley’s system will spread the ball

around, but a go-to player hasn’t yet emerged. Last season, Maryland struggled to find rhythm in the passing game from its quarterbacks — Kasim Hill, who’s no longer with the team, and Tyrrell Pigrome, who’s competing for the job with Josh Jackson, another Virginia Tech transfer. Jones was the leading returning receiver with 288 yards. So the group will hope for more in 2019 with a fresh staff, different scheme, possibly a new quarterback and a few additions, including Savoy. That’s what I do whenever I’m invited to speak to a group of high school students, and for the past five years, I’ve gotten the same answer: YouTube is the go-to spot, and it isn’t even close. Not Spotify, not Apple Music, not SoundCloud. For young listeners, YouTube is their radio (widely accessible), their record store (awesomely vast), their MTV (partly retinal), their Walkman (completely portable), their iTunes (on demand), their online message board (comments abound) — all in one place. And the numbers bear it out. One billion

An unlikely king: How YouTube took over music

the most enthralling rap performances I’ve ever heard. What’s great is that I never searched for this song. I didn’t know it existed. But YouTube, having kept its all-seeing eye on me for so many years, knew that I loved ’90s gangsta rap from Los Angeles, and suspected that I might like Suga Free’s dining-table act. Presto. You watch YouTube while YouTube watches you. It tallies every detail of your Googleowned life, all in an effort to advertise to your eyes and ears for hours without end. Yet, even with all of those alarms going off, I still feel like being able to hear those Suga Free rhymes anytime I want might be worth the annoying pre-roll ads, worth the surveillance, worth the threat of living in a

world of automated taste. YouTube has no discernible limits, so its contours don’t impose any particular pressure on the music that fills it. Instead, the limit is our time. Other music-streaming services are mindful of our time. They provide a deep menu of comfort-zone playlists designed to reinforce our tastes. Not YouTube. It promises horizons. This has to be why teenage listeners keep pointing their ears toward YouTube’s sonic sprawl. When you’re young, the world feels impossibly big. If you’re not worried about how much time you have left to hear it, searching and floating can feel like the same thing. Follow Chris Richards on Twitter @Chris__Richards

‘Work to Do’ is a fruitful collaboration Marc Cohn and the Blind Boys of Alabama’s new collaboration began as an EP of studio recordings before being wisely extended with live tracks from their performance for a PBS concert series. The album, released Friday, kicks off with the joyous gospel standard “Walking in Jerusalem.” That song, and the others originally meant for the EP — the title track and “Talk Back Mic” — are also excellent, and make one yearn for a full studio effort. Still, the live renditions have their own charms, as Cohn blends in well with the Blind Boys’ seasoned ensemble. Their version of Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis” is both more stripped down and more impassioned than the original. And “Silver Thunderbird” is akin to an extended superstar guitar jam, its nearly 10 minutes flying by with entertaining vocal spotlights. PABLO GORONDI (AP)

Domingo facing harassment claims Nine women accuse the Spanish opera star of sexual misconduct #METOO For decades, Plácido Domingo, one of the most celebrated and powerful men in opera, has tried to pressure women into sexual relationships by dangling jobs and then sometimes punishing the women professionally when they refused his advances, numerous accusers told The Associated Press. Regarded as one of the greatest opera singers of all time, Domingo also is a prolific conductor and the director of the Los Angeles Opera. The multiple Grammy winner is an immensely respected figure in his rarefied world, described by colleagues as a man of prodigious charm. At 78, Domingo still attracts sellout crowds around the globe and continues adding to the 150 roles he has sung in 4,000-plus performances, more than any opera singer in history. But his accusers and others in the industry say there is a troubling side to Domingo — one they say has long been an open secret in the opera world. Eight singers and a dancer have told AP that they were sexually harassed by the longmarried, Spanish-born superstar in encounters that took place

over three decades beginning in the late 1980s, at venues that included opera companies where he held top managerial positions. One accuser said Domingo stuck his hand down her skirt, and three others said he forced wet kisses on their lips — in a dressing room, a hotel room and at a lunch meeting. “He was always touching you in some way, and always kissing you,” one of the singers said. In addition to the nine accusers, a half-dozen other women said that suggestive overtures by Domingo made them uncomfortable. AP also spoke to almost three dozen other singers, dancers, orchestra musicians, members of backstage staff, voice teachers and an administrator who said they witnessed inappropriate sexually tinged behavior by Domingo and that he pursued younger women with impunity. Domingo did not respond to detailed questions from AP, but issued a statement saying: “The allegations from these unnamed individuals dating back as many as thirty years are deeply troubling, and as presented, inaccurate. “Still, it is painful to hear that I may have upset anyone or made them feel uncomfortable — no matter how long ago and despite my best intentions.” JOCELYN GECKER (AP)
