Tim Pawlenty’s future in the race is as a potentially influential endorser who any of the top-tier candidates would like to have. Given his heated back-and-forth with Michele Bachmann during Thursday’s debate, it’s hard to imagine Pawlenty throwing his political weight behind her. But both Mitt Romney and Rick Perry served as governors alongside Pawlenty and will likely play up those ties if or when they decide to seek his support. (T WP)

Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty’s decision to drop out of the presidential race on Sunday — nearly six months before the first votes are set to be cast in the 2012 contest — was the result of a fundamental misreading of the Republican primary electorate and a failure to properly manage the expectations game. Pawlenty’s presidential candidacy was an open secret in Republican political circles long before he made it official in late May. His recruitment of highly prized staff talent earned him buzz in the early months of 2011 as he worked to emerge as the Republican alternative to former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. But Pawlenty’s demeanor — he was the definition of “Minnesota Nice” — didn’t fit with an electorate who wanted confrontation with President Obama at all costs. Pawlenty watched as Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann soared past him in the race — channeling the anger of voters who saw compromise in any form as capitulation. It wasn’t just that Pawlenty was running as a conciliator in a time of confrontation. It was that he never seemed to settle on exactly how he

wanted to position himself. While whispers that Pawlenty was less than advertised had begun to grow as the summer approached, it all crystallized during a debate in New Hampshire on June 13. The night before, Pawlenty had referred to the health care plan pushed by Romney in Massachusetts as “Obamaneycare”. But when CNN moderator John King teed up a chance for Pawlenty to directly attack Romney on those grounds, he demurred. “I think his refusal to take on Romney in the initial debate was a fatal mistake,” said Mark McKinnon, a Republican strategist unaffiliated with any 2012 candidate. “Voters want bold leaders. And that sent a message of weakness, and the air went out of his buzz, his fundraising, everything at a critical time. ... He never recovered.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

5 Die After Wind Collapses Ind. Fair Stage The wind gust that toppled a stage at the Indiana State Fair Saturday night, killing five and injuring dozens of fans waiting for the country band Sugarland to perform, was a “fluke” that no one could have anticipated, the governor and others said Sunday. The wind was far stronger than that in other areas of the fairgrounds, said Dan McCarthy, chief meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Indiana. He estimated the gust at 60 to 70 mph. Gov. Mitch Daniels said precautions were taken before the storm, but no one could have foreseen such a strong gust focused in one place.

perately sad, as-far-as-I-can-tell fluke event doesn’t change that,” Daniels said. Four people were killed when the metal scaffolding and other stage equipment fell, and a fifth died overnight at a hospital, Indiana State Police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten said. The county coroner’s office identified the victims as Alina Bigjohny, 23, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Christina Santiago, 29, of Chicago; Tammy Vandam, 42, of Wanatah, Ind.; and two Indianapolis residents: 49-year-old Glenn Goodrich and 51-year-old Nathan Byrd, who died overnight. Forty-five people were taken to hospitals, and some may have gone on their own, Bursten said. TOM LOBIANCO (AP)

Daring Taliban Assault Kills 22 Governor survives 6 militants’ attack in province near Kabul

9^Wh_aWh" 7\]^Wd_ijWd Six suicide bombers attacked a governor’s security meeting in one of Afghanistan’s most secure provinces, killing 22 people and driving home the point that the Taliban are able to strike at will virtually anywhere in the country. The governor of Parwan, a relatively peaceful eastern province just 30 miles north of Kabul, survived. He said he picked up an assault rifle and fatally shot at least one of the attackers from the waiting room of his office. “I had an AK-47. I shot him from the window of my waiting room,” said Gov. Abdul Basir Salangi, who is formerly the police chief of Kabul. He said it was the second time in the past month he was targeted by an assassination attempt. Police said Sunday’s assault

The attacks raise more questions about Afghanistan’s ability to defend itself as the U.S.-led coalition hands more of the country over to its struggling forces. Community groups held a peace rally Sunday in England’s secondlargest city against the hit-and-run attack that claimed three lives during rioting in Birmingham. Scores of people gathered in the neighborhood where three Muslim men — Haroon Jahan, 20; and brothers Shazad Ali, 30, and Abdul Musavir, 31 — were mowed down Wednesday by a car traveling at a high speed. The trio had been with a larger group guarding a row of Pakistani-owned shops against looters. The killings had threatened to ignite clashes between the area’s South Asian and black gangs, but appeals for calm from Jahan’s father, Tariq Jahan, have so far been heeded.

9hWi^ L_Yj_c _d H[Yel[ho Man hit by train was in medically induced coma, his family says MWi^_d]jed Victor Robinson, a 41-year-old man with epilepsy, needed to get his watch fixed. After leaving his job at a nonprofit organization for the day on Aug. 1, he planned to stop by a jewelry repair shop, catch a Red Line train at the Friendship Heights station and then head home to Petworth, said Ondina Robinson, 75. Three hours later, she received a call from Suburban Hospital, in Bethesda. Her son had been in an accident, and Robinson had head and foot injuries. Could she come to the hospital soon? Robinson had become the eighth passenger this year struck by a Metro train, the transit authority said. That’s more than the seven who were struck in all of last year, according to Metro’s records. Twelve riders were hit by trains in 2009, including a single accident in which a blind Rockville man tumbled from the platform at Gallery Place. “By all indications, this appears to be an unfortunate accident,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said. Officially, the Robinson case was still under investigation, he said. Robinson’s family thinks he might have had a severe seizure while standing on the platform at Friendship Heights and then fell onto the tracks. He was found with two items he often wears: a silver Superman ring and his medical ID bracelet. Robinson — an avid collector of toy cars, key chains, puzzles, T-shirts, baseball hats and trains — has regularly participated in the Special Olympics since middle school, his family said.

Last Wednesday, he responded to commands from doctors to move his fingers and open his eyes. The next day, he opened his eyes slightly and looked toward his mother as she called his name. “That’s always encouraging for us,” Dancy said. “It’s an indication that he’s still here with us.” Thelma Greene, his fiancee, who has cerebral palsy and lives in Shaw, hasn’t visited the hospital. She said she thinks it would be too hard to see him in the ICU with tubes and bandages. H.D. Woodson’s Campus Reborn School hopes facility will bring pride to class and community The eight-story “Tower of Power” is gone, and with it the escalators so balky that they made Metro’s seem reliable. So are the bleak stretches of windowless concrete that gave H.D. Woodson Senior High School the look and feel of a penal institution rather than a high school in Northeast. On Wednesday, District officials will cut the ribbon on a new $102 million Woodson, one bathed in natural light from expansive windows and a central atrium. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports 145 such incidents in fiscal 2010-11, compared to 153 the previous year. Virginia State Police compiled the statistics. The newspaper’s analysis found that most of the incidents were relatively minor, and few appeared to involve people with concealed-carry permits. Only two of the 18 aggravated assaults reported could be linked definitively to concealedcarry holders. (AP)

She held it up for the 24 other mostly middle-age women who had come to learn as much as they could about couponing. Pepper-Hoctor is a veteran bargain hunter who probably has enough toiletries at home to stock your basic Presidential Emergency Operations Center. Her lesson plan includes everything from a rundown of stores that double coupons to an explanation of “piggybacking,” in which combinations of store and manufacturer coupons are used to get deep discounts. “Let’s go to Walgreens,” Pepper-
Hoctor said several hours before her class at the library in Charlotte Hall. At the store, Pepper-Hoctor picked up a 6-ounce tube of Arm & Hammer toothpaste. “It’s $3.99, and then ‘buy one get one free,’ and then I have two coupons for it at $1 apiece.” The regular price was $4.29 each; Pepper-Hoctor could buy four for $4.98.
“We don’t use these, but my mom does,” she said. From aisle to aisle she went, picking up a couple of cheaperthan-usual bottles of vitamins, including Flintstones Gummies; three boxes of Old El Paso taco shells for 79 cents each (usually $2.29); and a six-pack of Expo washable dry erase markers for $2.99 — $7 off the list price. She’d been in the store an hour. The order totaled $136.87, including more than $40 in store markdowns. “Now,” said the clerk, “let’s whittle it down.” The total shrank to $94.87. Pepper-Hoctor nodded. “I saved $86 — nearly half.” (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Hope Goes on the Ropes Obama steps up to counteract the political barrage from Republicans
ÇOekÊl[ ]ej W h_]^j je X[ \hkijhWj[Z$ ? Wc$È — PRE SIDENT OBA M A , IN HIS WEEKLY ADDRESS TO THE NATION.
F[hho Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a cleverly timed entrance into the race during an announcement in South Carolina on Saturday. Perry, a former Democrat and the nation’s longest-serving governor, told his audience that President Obama’s government had “an insatiable desire to spend our children’s inheritance.” He accused Obama of presiding over an “economic disaster.”

President Obama launches a political counteroffensive this week, weighed down by withering support among some of his most ardent backers, a stunted economy and a daily bashing from the slew of Republicans campaigning for his job. “We’ve still got a long way to go to get to where we need to be. We didn’t get into this mess overnight, and it’s going to take time to get out of it,” Obama told the country over the weekend, all but pleading for people to stick with him. A deeply unsettled political landscape, with voters in a fiercely anti-incumbent mood, is framing the 2012 presidential race 15 months before Americans decide whether to give Obama a second term. They increasingly are voicing disgust with most of the people they sent to Washington to govern them, Obama included. With his approval numbers sliding, Obama will try to ease their worries and sustain his resurrected fighting spirit when he sets off Monday on a bus tour of Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. The trip is timed to dilute the GOP buzz in the Midwest after Republicans gathered in Iowa over the weekend for a first test of the party’s White House candidates. “You have just sent a message that Barack Obama will be a oneterm president,” Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said after winning Saturday’s Iowa straw poll, essentially a fundraising event that also tests a candidate’s organizational and financial strength. But while the voting was under

Democrats probably rejoiced that her ultraconservative voice gained strength among GOP contenders. But her win comes with a warning: Only twice since the straw polls began in 1980 has the winner captured the caucuses.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, once seen as a fringe candidate and a nuisance to the establishment, placed second in the straw poll. His organizational strength and a retooled focus on social issues set him up to be a serious player.
After ex-Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney responded to a heckler over tax policies by saying “corporations are people, my friend,” the Democratic National Committee used the remark in pre-straw poll TV ads in Des Moines.
Ex-Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty dropped out of the race for the GOP presidential nomination on Sunday, hours after finishing third in the Iowa straw poll. “Obviously, the pathway forward for me doesn’t really exist,” Pawlenty said.
FWb_d Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin wasn’t on the ballot at the straw poll and isn’t a candidate yet. But she unexpectedly showed up at the Iowa State Fair a day before the vote, drawing huge crowds and saying she hadn’t ruled out running.
way in Ames, Iowa, Republicans shifted their gaze to South Carolina, where Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a cleverly timed entrance into the race. Obama, expecting the political shelling he would take, fired preemptively in his weekly address to the nation on Saturday, saying that it was the Republicans running for president and serving in Congress who were at work crushing voters’ hopes and dreams. The question for Obama and his backers remains: Will he sustain the counterattack? Of late, he’s been seen by even his staunchest supporters as too ready to retreat when confronted by Republicans. And Obama’s bus tour will have to compete for attention as the country digests Perry’s rhetorical assault on Obama’s presidency. By entering the race on the day of the Iowa voting, Perry angered some Republicans, but he succeeded in diminishing attention on the heartland. What’s more, it saved him campaign cash and energy. If nothing else, voters won’t be able to ignore the fact that Perry’s speaking style and swagger are reminiscent of another Texas governor who transitioned to the national stage: George W. Bush. “I’ll work every day to try to make Washington, D.C., as inconsequential in your lives as I can,” Perry said Saturday, a nod to his tea party backing. STE VEN R. HURST (AP)

7 FHEC?I?D= IJ7HJ Strong preseason opener buoys the Redskins’ spirits J^[ H[Zia_di The Redskins haven’t piled up so many yards in a preseason game since the great Steve Spurrier debut in Japan. And everyone knows how that turned out. Still, a good start is better than a poor one, and coach Mike Shanahan and the Redskins definitely deserve a trending arrow that points upward after Friday night’s 16-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. No turnovers. No sacks allowed. No new injuries. Only three penalties. A 3-4 defense that actually suits the players on the field. An offensive line that looks more comfortable in the zone blocking scheme. Promising first steps by Rex Grossman and Tim Hightower in their respective bids for starting spots. But, for a good reality check, all one has to do is remember Spurrier’s first time out, when the Redskins outgained the San Francisco 49ers 479-186 in the

The Redskins on Sunday cut Shayne Graham, above left, leaving incumbent Graham Gano, above right, as the lone remaining kicker at training camp. Graham is the third-most-accurate kicker in NFL history, but he shanked a 29-yard field goal attempt and missed a 49-yarder in Friday’s win over Pittsburgh. 2002 American Bowl in Japan, a game that turned out to be the high point in the ol’ ball coach’s otherwise calamitous two years in Washington. The yardage numbers from Friday are eerily similar: 452-186. Another thing the two games have in common: The Redskins used their starters considerably more than the other team. Shanahan had most of his firstteamers playing the entire first half, while Steelers coach Mike Tomlin had his backups on the field before the first quarter was over. Santana Moss caught more passes (seven) than he did in last year’s four preseason games combined (six). So there’s no need to celebrate. September is miles away. “I think we did some good things,” said nose tackle Barry Cofield, the new anchor of the defensive line. “There’s obviously some work to do, but for the first time out and all the circumstances that surrounded this, I think we did pretty well.”

** The number of yards Tim Hightower rushed for on 10 carries during the Redskins’ preseason opener against the Steelers Friday night.
The tight end roughly two weeks ago said, “I feel awesome,” but we know that’s not the case now that Mike Shanahan revealed that the veteran saw a specialist about his sore left knee and won’t be back for at least two weeks. Cooley has had fluid drained from the knee twice in the last few weeks and was able to practice only once last week. How serious is this injury? (T WP)
Grossman helped his cause by completing 19 of 26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown while his competition, John Beck, sat out with a groin injury. Hightower also benefited from an absent rival, carrying 10 times for 44 yards while Ryan Torain recovers from a broken hand. Brandon Banks showed he can still be an explosive kick returner despite his recent knee problems. Third downs again plagued the offense, despite the yardage total. The Redskins ranked next-to-last in third-down conversions last year and were only 5 for 14 against the Steelers. Of course, every preseason stat is skewed because so many backups are playing and the final score doesn’t matter. “Still like to get in the end zone a few more times,” Shanahan said. “But overall, pleased with the effort.” JOSEPH WHITE (AP)

Nats Make Pitch to Sign Prospect Third-round pick may be the hardest to reach a deal with J^[ DWj_edWbi General Manager Mike Rizzo spent the weekend in Houston in negotiations with Peter Vescovo, the representative for Nationals thirdround draft choice Matt Purke, a Nationals official said. Purke, a lefthanded starting pitcher from Texas Christian, may be the most challenging player left for the Nationals to sign with the deadline looming at midnight Monday night. The Nationals have yet to sign any of their top four draft picks, including Anthony Rendon (Rice infielder,

It should not be a surprise that those players, highly regarded talents represented by Scott Boras, are not signed before the day of the deadline. The Nationals expected those negotiations to come down to the wire, as did their negotiations with Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper the previous two years, even though Strasburg and Harper were No. 1 overall picks and far more high-profile cases. Rendon, Meyer and Goodwin represent fairly straightforward cases as opposed to Purke. The Rangers drafted Purke, a hardthrowing left-hander with a wicked

changeup, out of high school with the 14th overall pick in 2009. The Rangers and Purke could not agree on a signing bonus, largely because
MLB had taken over the bankrupt Rangers and would not allow the team to offer the $6 million Purke reportedly wanted. So Purke went to TCU instead, and, heading into this college season, he was regarded as a possible top-five overall pick. Then Purke missed a month with a shoulder injury, which scared teams away and limited him to only 11 starts for TCU this season. (He compiled a 1.71 ERA with 61 strikeouts and 20 walks over 52 2/3 innings.) The Nationals chose Purke with the 96th overall pick with the understanding that both his health and his “signability” posed a risk. The question now is whether the Nationals and Purke can come to an agreement. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

CMT’s “Texas Women” comes closest to hitting the mark of something different. The series, set in Fort Worth, attempts to focus on the careers of four women. That aspect is way more entertaining than when it strays into manufactured issues (party girl Hannah moves in with responsible Anna). Intriguing elements feature barrel racer Brooke at the rodeo with a horse that won’t compete and struggling country music singer Ali, who begs radio stations to play her songs. Although the show includes yawn-inducing scenes of the women fighting, your heartstrings are tugged by the devastated look on Ali’s face when no one calls into the radio station to comment on her new single.

Style’s “Big Rich Texas” follows the Bravo model but takes all the fun out by making it too mean-spirited. This series chronicles four motherdaughter duos and one godmothergoddaughter pair in the Dallas social scene, mostly in a country club. The show doesn’t waste time exploring the subtleties of the high society (except for a lesson in how “Bless your little heart” means “You’re pitiful”) and instead captures the nastiest behavior of the pairs. The most cringe-worthy is Bonnie, a mom who so desperately craves the approval of her daughter, 22-year-old Whitney, that she agrees to fund Whitney’s breast implants, as long as the daughter brings home good grades.

Bravo says Dallas will serve as a “sexy backdrop” for the adventures of six singles who consider themselves the hottest prizes in town. Right up front, we learn that “Dallas is the playground of beautiful women” and that all you need to be a Texas starlet like Tara, left, is “big hair, big jewelry and big attitude.” Plotlines aren’t really the goal of the show, so the series has to bank on the personalities of the characters, who don’t show a lot of promise. Bravo is filled with sleek, shiny shows about people who can’t stand one another, and this show doesn’t stray from the formula.

erly introduced to your fair state — the cake bosses, the hair salons, the Situations — reality television has decided to explore another region. This summer, a trio of series hailing from Texas is on the prime-time lineup: CMT’s “Texas Women” and Style’s “Big Rich Texas,” both of which debuted in July, and Bravo’s “Most Eligible Dallas,” premiering tonight. But if there’s a concept that reality TV has not succeeded at taking advantage of, it’s geography. Slapping city names in front of the names of shows doesn’t make them different from the ones before them. Alas, a catty fight in Orange County is the same as a catty fight in Seaside Heights.

D.C. Beer Week comes at a perfect time of year, a doldrums week so boring that even if it weren’t officially Beer Week, we’d probably be guzzling exactly the same number of brews. But Beer Week gives us an awesome slate of events to work from (see all at Dcbeer. com). Here’s what you shouldn’t miss. Monday at 7 p.m., Kramerbooks (1517 Connecticut Ave. NW) 8o <_edW is the site of the BrookPkXb_d lyn Brawl, a beer and cheese tasting featuring craft beers from the New York brewhouse ($7-$9 per 6 oz., plus a paired cheese). Tuesday at 4 p.m., Church Key hosts (1337 14th St. NW) Heavy Seas Wood Cask Night, featuring several Heavy Seas brews and a wooden cask filled with beer (sadly, the cask is not made from the timbers of a pirate ship). Wednesday at 5 p.m., Smith Commons (1245 H St. NE) holds Midwest Brewery Night, featuring beers from Colorado, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri and Utah, along with appropriate food pairings. (I would never tell you what to do, but in the name of all you hold dear, order the golden, citrusy Oberon Summer Ale.) Thursday at 5 p.m., The Reef (2446 18th St. NW) hosts the Blue Point Beer and Oyster Fest, which pairs the Long Island brewery’s creations with Long Island oysters to achieve maximum “Gatsby” effect. Saturday at 4 p.m., the Red Palace (1212 H St. NE) features the DC Homebrewers Association Homebrew Competition. Admission is $10, and you can taste beer that was brewed in our very own District.

Eminem collaborator Royce da 5’9” hopes his new album soars Cki_Y

Royce da 5’9” has enjoyed a No. 1 album, thanks to his collaboration with Eminem, but he doesn’t enjoy the same amount of fame. He’s still aiming high, though. “It would be great if I could be in that position,” says Royce, whose real name is Ryan Daniel Montgomery. “I obviously don’t have to be that big,” he adds modestly. The rapper has toiled under the radar for years but is enjoying a different side of fame since working with Eminem, a fellow Detroit native who he has known for years. Their joint album, “Hell: The Sequel,” under the moniker Bad Meets Evil was a chart success, and Royce appeared onstage with Eminem at the recent Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, in front of a 60,000-strong crowd. “It’s one of the most massive things that I’ve ever been a part of performance-wise. It was crazy. The energy was great; everybody showed Marshall a lot of love,” Royce said in an interview this week about Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers.
Royce da 5’9” hopes his newest album, “Success Is Certain,” lives up to its namesake.

“Once you reach that level of superstardom, like when you’re beyond hip-hop, that’s like something else. Not everybody is built for that,” the rapper says. But Royce is hoping to ride the wave of his Bad Meets Evil success with his new album, “Success Is Certain,” which was released last week. REETU RUPAL (AP)

Jani Lane, the former lead singer of the metal rock band Warrant, has died in Los Angeles. He was 47. Officer Sara Faden says Lane’s body was found Thursday in a Woodland Hills hotel. She had no immediate information on the cause or circumstances of his death. With his long blond hair and tight leather outfits, Lane embodied the excess of 1980s “hair metal”
rock bands. He joined Warrant in 1984 and wrote such hits as “Heaven,” “Down Boys” and “Cherry Pie.” He had an on-and-off relationship with the band, leaving it in 1992 before returning and quitting again several times. In recent years, he appeared on VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club.” He is survived by two daughters from two previous marriages. (AP)

Alec Baldwin earns bragging rights as the most familiar “Saturday Night Live” host when he opens the NBC show’s 37th season on Sept. 24. It will be his 16th time as host. The “30 Rock” actor moves past Steve Martin, who has done it 15 times. Radiohead will make its second appearance as a musical guest on the show. Melissa McCarthy of “Bridesmaids” fame will host the second week, her “SNL” debut. (AP)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Tend to things one at a time and you’ll be able to check almost everything off your list. One or two jobs are not one-day affairs. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may conflict with a friend or neighbor who doesn’t understand that what he or she does affects what you have to do yourself. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ll enjoy something that comes to you very much by surprise, and you’ll have an appetite for more. There’s more where that came from. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may have to lay down the law so that others do not cross the line and prevent you, inadvertently, from doing what must be done. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) That which seems inexplicable at first is likely to make a great deal of sense to you after you give it just a bit of study.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) What you’re waiting for is right around the corner, but the pace may slow somewhat, so you’re going to have to be unusually patient. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) A complication early in the day may have you changing gears in order to address an issue that you thought had been cleared up permanently.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) The care you show for those who depend on you will impress others, and a healthy dose of recognition is likely to come your way. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) It’ll be your turn to do your half of a rather complicated job; he or she who finished the first half has shown you how. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’re not likely to have all the answers, but you can follow certain clues and augment your knowledge in fortuitous ways. CANCER (June 21-July 22) It’s a good day to set aside your differences with a rival and realize that by working together you can do something that really counts.
