Health officials in one Colombian coastal city have a controversial recommendation for residents trying to stay cool during an intense heat wave: Take a break from sex. A Slovakian woman was arrested last week after playing the same four-minute Verdi aria nonstop for 16 years, BBC News reported. Hungarian news website parameter.sk said the woman, identified as Eva N., initially put on an aria from “La Traviata” to drown out the sound of a neighbor’s dog barking. Neighbors said they were outraged the situation was allowed to go on so long. “The whole street is suffering,“ one told Slovak paper Sme. (EXPRESS)

LANDOVER, MD. A group of sweaty kids darted around a field last week at Total Soccer Arena in Landover, Md., covered in bits of rubber from the turf. In between shots, passes and giggles, they chatted in English, but also in Pashto, Arabic and other languages. All of the kids are refugees. They were playing as part of a camp that gives them a chance to improve their soccer skills and to meet other kids who had to start their lives over in the United States. The weeklong camp for ages 9 to 14 doesn’t focus only on soccer, though — it also helps kids learn lessons that can guide them off the field, such as how to respect themselves, how to manage anger and how to value other people. The camp is run by the nonprofit Life and Change Experienced Thru Sports, which uses soccer to help bring together communities that have

experienced hardships. Seren Fryatt, 38, got the idea for LACES while playing on a women’s soccer team in Liberia. Fryatt, who’s from Muncie, Ind., saw that soccer brought joy to the Liberian women on her team, even though their lives off the field were difficult. After starting a soccer program for kids in Liberia, she decided to start a similar camp in Maryland, where she moved in 2015. Coaches volunteer their time, and the costs are paid mostly by donations. This year, 95 kids signed up. Lara Karagholi, a 10-year-old camper, used to kick a soccer ball in a park with friends in her home country of Iraq. When she moved to the United States four years ago, she said she didn’t speak English and got bullied in school. Now her English is excellent, she loves school, and she has lots of friends there. At the camp, she got to meet even more people. “I like that we get to play together and make new friends, especially when we play a real soccer game,” Lara said. At the end of the camp’s last

day, all the kids gathered in the middle of the field. Fryatt asked them to raise their hands and say what they had learned that week. Some kids talked about soccer skills — one girl said she’d learned not to use her hands, and a boy said he’d learned how to shoot. When a coach called on one shy girl, she smiled before answering in a soft voice. “Celebrate each other,” she said. TAYLOR TELFORD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Lead found in D.C. homes of 41 families

THE DISTRICT Chanelle Mattocks remembers everything about that night in 2014, when lead poisoned her son. She was giving Alonzo, then 3, a bath in a tub that her landlord had just painted to pass a housing inspection. She turned to find a washcloth, and when she swiveled back, Alonzo had bits of peeling paint in his mouth. She tried to get it out, but it was too late. The lead tests came back positive: Alonzo had more than double what the government defines as “elevated,” and he hasn’t been the same since. Between March 2013 and March 2018, at least 41 families discovered that their homes, subsidized by a housing voucher and approved by city inspectors, contained lead contaminants, according to a tabulation requested by The Washington Post through the Freedom of Information Act. The District Department of Energy and Environment, which performed the count and the testing, said it inspected about half of the homes because a child living at the property, or visiting it often, had tested positive for

elevated levels of lead; the other homes were investigated following a tip about possible lead hazards. The agency said the list wasn’t exhaustive and that there may be more. The findings highlight key weaknesses in federal guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which D.C. and other cities follow. Many rental properties supported by housing vouchers in the city receive inspections under these standards, which require only visual inspections for peeling paint and don’t mandate lead testing. Rick White, a spokesman for the District Housing Authority, which performs many of the inspections for subsidized properties, said that most of the voucher properties in the tabulation were overseen by the agency. After hazardous lead was found, some families moved out when their landlords did not abate the contamination. Other landlords cleared the properties of lead hazards, and the families stayed. It is the landlords’ responsibility, he said, to ensure that the homes are free of hazardous lead. White stressed that DCHA is “fully meeting its legal obligations,” adding that the city is also reviewing how cities that have

Donna Black is still dealing with the effects of lead poisoning after she moved into a house in Northwest Washington with her housing voucher in 2013, while she was pregnant. A year after her baby Damion was born, his blood carried twice what the government considers

an elevated amount of lead. Four years later, Black is homeless, living in a Holiday Inn Express with Damion. “The city is the No. 1 reason why this has happened to my son,” she said. “They let our family move in there, and it was fixed up to the point where it could look like it was OK, but it really wasn’t.” TERRENCE MCCOY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Lest anyone living in the D.C. area think Western wildfires are a problem 3,000 miles away, they might take a whiff of the air in their own backyard. Highaltitude winds have carried the smoke across the country into the Mid-Atlantic region. Capital Weather Gang readers queried on Twitter reported smelling smoke all over the region. “I walked outside earlier and definitely smelled wildfire smoke,” @annikaep tweeted Wednesday from downtown D.C. In a forecast Tuesday, the National Weather Service predicted that the jet stream, the fast-moving current of upper-level winds, would carry smoke across the country, but that it was expected to remain “above the surface.” Joel Dreessen, an air quality forecaster for Maryland’s Department of Environment, confirmed the smoke is affecting the air we breathe. He said the smoke had wafted over the air above us for “many” days, but had “made its way to the surface in noticeable fashion” as of Thursday. He noted that several constituents of smoke were detected in elevated quantities, including fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide and black carbon. A Code Orange alert, signifying unhealthy air for sensitive groups, was issued for Baltimore and northeast Maryland on Thursday. JASON SAMENOW

ARLINGTON Dominion Power is investigating the cause of a late-night power outage in and around Reagan National Airport on Wednesday that grounded a couple of flights and plunged passengers into darkness at their gates, officials said. Charles Penn, a spokesman for the utility company, said a preliminary finding showed there was an “equipment failure” involving a switch, but he could not provide more details yet. “We do not believe it was sabotage,” Penn said. “There is no evidence of foul play.” About 275 customers in the area also lost electricity about 9:30 p.m., officials said.

“It’s highly unusual,” said Rob Yingling, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, to have an airport-wide power outage. Power was restored a little after 11 p.m., he added. The impact to airport operations was limited as backup power generators kicked in for critical systems and emergency lighting illuminated terminals. Several arriving flights could not deplane immediately because no gates were available, and at least one flight was canceled. Security screening was temporarily halted until systems could be restarted. The airfield lighting and the air traffic control tower were not affected. “They had backup systems and were able to direct landings and takeoff without issue,” Yingling said. ARELIS R. HERNÁNDEZ AND LORI ARATANI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. Water and Sewer Authority officials pledged Thursday to revamp their systems for communicating with the public after an internal report identified shortcomings in the way it handled a potential contamination of the city’s water supply in July. The report states D.C. Water has added a second web server to deal with high traffic on its site and is in the process of replacing its robocall system. The agency is also discussing possibly issuing wireless emergency alerts. The employee whose error created the original water-pressure problem resigned from D.C. Water this week, agency spokesman John Lisle said. (TWP) MARYLAND

High levels of lead found in some school fountains State-mandated testing showed elevated lead levels in drinking fountains and taps in schools in Montgomery County, Anne Arundel County and Baltimore, officials said. The first phase of school drinking water outlet testing, mandated by a bill passed last year, had to be completed by July 1. In Montgomery County, 238 of the 13,248 fixtures tested were found to have elevated lead levels. Those fixtures were taken off line. (TWP) VIRGINIA

Baltimore will try dockless providers Baltimore has traded its bike-share program for a dockless pilot program. Mayor Catherine Pugh announced Wednesday that the city has entered into agreements with Bird and Lime to each place 1,000 scooters or bikes on the streets, at no cost to the city. The companies will be required to offer discounts to low-income customers. (AP)

Corey Stewart, the Virginia Republican seeking to unseat Democratic Senator Tim Kaine in November, tweeted a photo of Kaine as a young Jesuit missionary in Honduras posing with armed guerrillas. The image was fake. Kaine spokesman Ian Sams called Stewart “a chronic, serial liar who will say or do anything just to get attention.” Stewart acknowledged the picture was altered, but said it was meant to “prove a point” that Kaine is a “radical leftist.” (TWP)

Yuri and Colleen Borovsky wait at the Morgan Boulevard Station during their morning commute.

Keeping love on track With extra effort, one couple is preserving a romantic routine amid Metro chaos METRO The crush of people waiting for trains at McPherson Square Metro station seems an unlikely place to find love in the air. But Colleen Borovsky and her husband, Yuri, have a little routine. Yuri, 33, texts ahead to Colleen at McPherson as he gets on a train at Farragut West to tell her which car he’s in. Some days his text will say “5 of 6,” as in the fifth of six cars. Other times he’ll text the car number. Certainly, part of what Colleen, 29, liked when she met Yuri at the National Portrait Gallery after meeting online five years ago was that he’s handsome. Slim and over 6 feet tall, he has a slight Russian accent, too. But Colleen, who’s from Buffalo and, like her husband, works in international development, says she liked that he talked, and did so without the encouragement of alcohol. He’d been on a trip to Japan before that first date, so he told her all about how the Japanese fold their underwear into small

triangles like origami to fit into small dressers. “Who talks about that on a first date?” Yuri said as the pair rode the Silver Line home together Tuesday afternoon. But sometimes, Colleen said, giving her husband a look of reassurance and a touch of guilt, she just wants a little quiet when they get home. She’s found that if they talk through the day’s events during the usual 40-minute ride to Morgan Boulevard, Yuri will leave her in peace while she makes dinner. And so, finding each other on Metro each evening is their little thing. The single-tracking that began last Saturday, as Metro rebuilds the Orange, Silver and Blue Line tracks between the McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations, is taking a toll on a lot of people’s routines. With trains coming less frequently and running more slowly, it’s meant longer commutes and frustrating waits. Some on the trains this week said the delays have made them late for work. James Hutchinson feels guilty that the hour it’s now

The Borovskys plan it so they can find each other and ride home together from McPherson Square.

taking him to get home means his cats, who have been alone all day, have to wait for him 40 minutes longer than usual. Others are getting up earlier for work and missing their sleep. It has meant more stress for Yuri and Colleen, too. As it happened, an Orange Line train arrived at Farragut West before a Silver Line train on Tuesday, which meant a change in the routine. The Orange Line veers off at Stadium-Armory,

away from Morgan Boulevard. So Yuri had to get off his Orange Line train at McPherson, find Colleen, and switch to the Silver Line. As he got off, he encountered a swirl of people on the platform. “I don’t know how this is going to go,” he said, but he called out in relief when he saw his wife by a garbage can: “Colleen!” The thing is, Yuri had a chance to avoid a week of this mess. A couple of weeks ago, he was handed one of those pamphlets about the upcoming track work. He took it to his boss and pleaded for a week off. Being an Orange Line rider as well, his boss relented. But Colleen, having been at her job only three months, couldn’t get the time off. There are some husbands who’d say, “Sorry, honey. Good luck on your commute.” But Yuri opted out of taking the vacation so he can use the time when he and Colleen can do something together. He chose her, in other words, over avoiding track work. That’s true love. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

ANSWER LINE

Why no extra shuttle buses from Rosslyn? Q. Blue Line rider Chris McNulty wants to know why Metro didn’t add shuttles between Rosslyn and points south, like Pentagon City, during the track work on the Orange, Silver and Blue lines. A. During the 16 days of work to rebuild the stretch between the McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations, the Blue Line is running only between the Franconia-Springfield and Arlington Cemetery stations. It’s not going to Rosslyn or D.C. So McNulty, who usually takes the Blue Line back and forth between Rosslyn and Pentagon City, has to take the Orange or Silver Line from Rosslyn through the work zone in downtown D.C. to L’Enfant Plaza and then take the Yellow Line back to Virginia, to Pentagon City. During the work, Metro has added bus service on the 3Y route, between East Falls Church and McPherson Square, and on the 38B route between Ballston and Farragut Square, said Rob Holzer, a spokesman for the transit agency. It did look into adding shuttle buses in Northern Virginia, he said. “But the number of contractors that provide shuttle bus services is limited and [they] did not have the equipment or resources available,” Holzer wrote in an email. Scientists: USDA plans will cut research funds

ANALYSIS Scientists are raising alarms over a Trump administration plan to overhaul two federal offices tasked with food and agriculture research, calling the move a ploy to slash funding to projects on climate change, nutrition and other top concerns. The plan, announced by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue last week, would relocate one top research office — the Economic Research Service — into the Office of the Secretary, a political branch of the Agriculture Department. It would also move ERS and a second scientific office, the National Institute for Food and Agriculture, out of Washington by the end of 2019. The reorganization would streamline the USDA’s operations, save taxpayer money and help the agency recruit and retain top staff, Perdue said in a statement. But a number of leading agricultural scientists and economists say the move risks gutting both agencies and stifling important federal research. The Trump administration has already targeted ERS for steep funding cuts, saying in its 2019 budget proposal that some of the agency’s research duplicated work being done at nonprofits and in the private sector. ERS research spans topics

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said that he plans to relocate a top research office as part of a reorganization of his department.

from crop yields and food prices to farm conservation practices, rural employment and nutrition assistance. It is not unusual for ERS reports to contradict administration policy, said Susan Offutt, a former ERS administrator who served in the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. “That’s a constant source of tension, but that’s also the benefit of ERS,” Offutt said. “You learn things you may not have otherwise thought of. It’s good government.” ERS and NIFA account for just over half of the $2.5 billion Congress budgeted for agricultural research in 2018. ERS employs 300 people in the D.C. region, according to the USDA. NIFA employs a D.C. staff of roughly 400.

$18.9M

The USDA said no economists or researchers will lose their jobs as a result of the reorganization, but the department has acknowledged that many will choose not to relocate. And it is unclear if the USDA plans to fill those vacancies. The plan may also weaken ERS research, critics say, by making it more difficult for agency economists to consult with other federal research offices, lawmakers and federal policy groups. “It seems weirdly punitive,” said Sonny Ramaswamy, who served as NIFA’s administrator until his six-year term expired in May. “I can’t figure out why they would do this. … There’s no compelling rationale.” CAITLIN DEWEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Extensive chemical testing on an ancient mummy has revealed the “recipe” used by ancient Egyptians, BBC News reported Thursday. Archaeologist Stephen Buckley and his colleagues at the University of York found that the mixture included a plant oil, a “balsam-type” plant or root extract, a plant-based gum and a conifer tree resin. The mummy they studied dated to about 3,700-3,500 B.C., nearly 2,000 years before a similar formulation was used on the Pharaohs. That means “we have a sort of pan-Egyptian identity well before the formation of the world’s first nation state in 3,100 B.C.,” Buckley said. “Its origins are much earlier than we thought.” (EXPRESS)

The same morning, the president tweeted that the “fake news media” are the “opposition party.” The editorials came after The Boston Globe’s editorial board called on other outlets to use their collective voice to respond to Trump’s war of words with news organizations in the U.S. Trump has labeled the news media “the enemy of the American people” and called much of the coverage “fake news.” The Globe’s editorial board made the appeal last week, urging newspaper editorial boards to produce opinion pieces about Trump’s attacks on the media. These boards, staffed by opinion writers, operate independently from news reporters and editors. The Globe reported Thursday that more than 300 newspapers obliged. Trump responded to the

editorials Thursday morning, tweeting that the Globe is “in collusion with other papers on free press” and that many of the media are “pushing a political agenda.” A month after taking the oath of office, Trump labeled the news media “the enemy of the American people.” Then last week, at a political rally in Pennsylvania, Trump told his audience that the media are “fake, fake disgusting news.” However, some newspapers decided not to run editorials on the issue, including The Washington

Post. The Post’s editorial board has previously responded to Trump’s attacks on news organizations, but editorial page editor Fred Hiatt said Saturday that the board would not participate in the organized response. The San Francisco Chronicle also did not participate. The Chronicle’s editorial page editor, John Diaz, wrote, “It’s not that we take issue with the argument that Trump’s assault on the truth generally, and his efforts to diminish the free press specifically, pose a serious threat to American

democracy.” But, he said, the newspaper values independence — a sentiment that was shared by the Los Angeles Times. Washington Post executive editor Martin Baron, who has responded directly to Trump’s attacks, said the paper’s reporting on the president is not a result of hostility. Baron told the Code Media conference in California: “The way I view it is, we’re not at war with the administration; we’re at work. We’re doing our jobs.” LINDSEY BEVER AND CLEVE R. WOOTSON JR. “Let’s start with a fundamental truth: It is and always has been in the interests of the powerful to dismiss and discredit those who could prove a check on their power. President Donald Trump is not the first politician to openly attack the media for fulfilling its watchdog role. He is, perhaps, the most blatant and relentless about it.”

“What makes Trump’s undermining of the press worse is that it’s not taking place in bureaucracy’s backrooms. Trump’s insults directed at reporters and news organizations, and his threats to limit press access and freedoms, are front and center at news conferences, at rallies, on Twitter. And they’re incessant.”

“Trump is a difficult politician to cover. His tweets and factually inaccurate statements frequently put him at loggerheads with the media. … It has become a destructive cycle where the media covers Trump’s words and instead of self-reflection following scathing media reports, Trump cries fake news.”

“The White House’s besmirching of journalists who are doing their jobs is dangerous to the public as well as to the press. It’s not just that we dislike being called ‘fake news.’ That misnomer discredits facts and creates what … adviser Kellyanne Conway called ‘alternative facts,’ making reasoned and informed debate basically impossible.”

Childhood exposure to secondhand smoke is linked to lung disease decades later, according to a study published Thursday by the American Cancer Society. For 22 years, researchers have been following more than 70,000 adults who have never smoked. At the beginning of the study, they were asked whether they lived in a household with a smoker while they were children. Those who did were 31 percent more likely to die of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is the first study to find a correlation between the two. “There is evidence that secondhand smoke is even more detrimental than smoking. A lot of cigarettes have filters. So [secondhand smoke] can be more detrimental in that regard,” said Geetha Raghuveer, a pediatric cardiologist at the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Medicine. The COPD mortality increase found in the study may amount to about seven additional deaths per year for every 100,000 participants. The study found slight increases in other health risks. But Michael Eriksen, a former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office on Smoking and Health, said the good news is that the study did not find an association with cancer or heart disease. nation+world New source of product for allergic reactions will take time to hit market HEALTH The Food and Drug Administration approved the first generic version of EpiPen on Thursday, a move that will bring new competition for the lifesaving allergy injection that helped spark public furor over high drug prices. The new drug, from Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, is the first to be deemed a therapeutic equivalent of the EpiPen, which means that it can be automatically substituted at the pharmacy counter for prescriptions for EpiPen or EpiPen Jr. The approval comes at the

start of the back-to-school season, when sales of EpiPen typically spike as parents stock up on injectors for school or replace expired ones, and people have reported difficulty filling EpiPen prescriptions. There has been “limited availability of EpiPen in certain areas in the U.S.,” according to an FDA spokeswoman. Teva said the price of the drug and the exact launch date were not yet available, but the company’s statement suggested it would not be in time for many parents who are scrambling to find EpiPen in their pharmacies now. “We’re applying our full resources to this important launch in the coming months and [are]

epinephrine into the thigh to quell potentially fatal reactions to bee stings, peanuts and other allergens. Although the key ingredient is cheap and the EpiPen itself was first approved in 1987, Mylan began increasing the price of the product, from less than $100 in 2007 for a pack of two injectors to $608 today. In response to criticism over the price of its drug, EpiPen introduced its own half-priced generic in 2016. Other epinephrine injectors have been approved before, but they struggled to gain market share against a brand that used lobbying and marketing to establish a virtual monopoly on the market. HEALTH Drug overdose deaths surpassed 72,000 in 2017, according to provisional estimates recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That represents an increase of more than 6,000 deaths, or 9.5 percent, over the estimate for the previous 12-month period. That staggering total works out to about 200 drug overdose deaths every day. The increase was driven primarily by a continued surge in deaths involving synthetic opioids, a category that includes fentanyl. There were nearly 30,000 deaths involving those drugs in 2017, according to the preliminary data, a jump of more than 9,000 over the prior year. Deaths involving cocaine also shot up significantly, putting the stimulant on par with drugs such as heroin and the category of natural opiates that includes painkillers such as oxycodone and hydrocodone. One potential spot of good news is that deaths involving those latter two drug categories appear to have flattened out, suggesting the possibility that opiate mortality may be at or nearing its peak. As in previous years, the highest mortality rates were seen in West Virginia, with 58.7 overdose deaths for every 100,000 residents. The top five also included D.C. (50.4), Pennsylvania (44.1), Ohio (44.0) and Maryland (37.9). CHRISTOPHER INGRAHAM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ALEXANDRIA The jury in the fraud trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort ended its first day of deliberations Thursday with a series of questions to the judge, including a request to “redefine” reasonable doubt. The questions came after roughly seven hours of deliberation, delivered in a handwritten note to U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III. He read the questions aloud to lawyers for both sides as well as Manafort before he called the jury in to give his answers. Along with the question on reasonable doubt, the jury asked about the list of exhibits, rules for reporting foreign bank accounts and the definition of “shelf companies,” a term used during the trial to describe some of the foreign companies used by Manafort. Ellis told the jurors they need to rely on their collective memory of the evidence to answer most questions. As for reasonable doubt, he described it as “a doubt based on reason” and told jurors it does not require proof “beyond all doubt.” Jurors began deliberating

Israel delivers Palestinian mail a decade late WEST BANK Palestinian postal workers have begun the daunting task of sorting through more than 10 tons of mail that were delivered by Israel nearly a decade late. Allam Moussa, the Palestinian Authority’s minister of communications, said the backlog of mail, which dates to 2010, was allowed in from Jordan after long negotiations with Israeli authorities. He accused Israel of delaying the delivery. “Every day we receive dozens and dozens of complaints from people about what happened to their mail,” said Hussein Sawaftah, head of the Palestinian postal service. “People will be happy to finally receive it.” But many items, he added, were damaged and broken. The mail will take at least four weeks to deliver, a process that would begin after the Eid al-Adha holiday later this month, Sawaftah said. The Israeli Defense Ministry body COGAT (Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories), which implements Israeli policies on civilian matters in the occupied West Bank, told the Times of Israel the release was part of confidence-building measures after the two sides agreed on a postal entry deal “about a year ago.” The deal had “allowed a onetime transfer of approximately 10.5 tons of mail that had been held in Jordan,” COGAT said. McNair’s dad: U-Md. needs to fire Durkin

JOHN MCDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL Jordan McNair’s father said Thursday that Maryland should fire DJ Durkin as football coach. “He shouldn’t be able to work with anybody else’s kid,” Martin McNair said of Durkin during an appearance on “Good Morning America” with Jordan McNair’s mother, Tonya Wilson. “You send your kid away to college for them to be developed into young people, and that’s physically, emotionally, spiritually.” McNair, a 19-year-old offensive lineman, suffered heatstroke during a team workout in May and died 15 days later. Durkin, along with two athletic trainers, is on administrative leave while university-ordered investigations into McNair’s death and the football program are being conducted. Rick Court, the team’s head strength and conditioning coach, resigned Monday. O n T ue s d ay, M a r yl a nd

President Wallace Loh said “the university accepts legal and moral responsibility for the mistakes that our training staff made.” The school confirmed that McNair’s temperature was not taken and that the training staff did not apply cold-water immersion. Martin McNair said on “Good Morning America” that parents entrust university staff with their children’s safety when they send them to college. “And they did anything but that, so of course [Durkin] should be fired,” Martin McNair said. He said he thought his son was having a seizure based on an initial call he received from Maryland, and that it was “kind of hard to understand or wrap our minds around the severity of a heatstroke.” He said his son hadn’t been to a hospital since birth. An ESPN report last week described the Maryland football culture as toxic with an environment “based on fear and humiliation.” Wilson, Jordan McNair’s mother, said that if the report is true, that culture played a role

Keeping football players cool during sweltering camps is critical to prevent heat-related health issues, and NFL teams have adopted new technologies to do so. Nationals still searching for a way to save season Hellickson’s wrist injury might make it harder to pull off a late surge MLB After the Nationals fell to the Cardinals 4-2 on Wednesday night, a true dud of a loss in a week full of more inspired close calls, the video monitors in the visitors’ clubhouse in St. Louis were at capacity. Daniel Murphy, half-changed, stared at one screen while Spencer Kieboom pored over another. Adam Eaton sat a few feet away, staring at a screen as assistant hitting coach Joe Dillon pointed something out. Trea Turner, still in full uniform, sat at the last screen, his nose not three inches from it, eyes fiery in a studious trance. “Just trying to figure out how not to miss pitches,” Turner said when the spell broke. “It really comes down to if you get pitches to hit, you’ve got to take advantage of them. Just trying to find any little thing to get an advantage.” That’s been the state of the Nationals this week. They entered Thursday’s series finale in St. Louis — which ended after Express’ deadline — a game under .500 and nine games back in a division they were supposed to win with room to spare. Wednesday’s

loss was their fourth straight during a crucial stretch. They still have been hunting for answers and have not conceded just yet. With a veteran team, they know that overhauling swings or approach or demeanor might only make things worse. “You try to do something that you don’t normally do, it can backfire,” Turner said. But day by day, the status quo seems to serve the Nats worse. Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson hurt his right wrist in the fifth inning Wednesday while trying to cover home after a wild pitch. X-rays on his hand were negative, but it was wrapped Thursday, and

he said he’ll know more after getting an MRI on Friday. The rotation is already without Stephen Strasburg, who could return from a neck injury as early as next week, but is no sure thing. A blow to Hellickson, one of the Nats’ most consistent starters, would make a late surge more difficult. Manager Dave Martinez admitted he’s thought about changing everything. He said he moved Juan Soto to second in the order Wednesday to see if it would spark early runs. But answers have been hard to come by this year. TIPS FOR DEALING WITH NOISY NEIGHBORS AND STREET NOISE

Wbb

hen it comes to noisy neighbors, whether they’re stomping around upstairs, playing loud music below you, or hitting snooze on their alarm clock in the room wall-adjacent to yours, they can cause a lot of stress. Street noise is also a big complaint among renters. You shouldn’t have to deal with loud noise interrupting your 1etČľi[ binge or disrupting your sleep cycle, so what should you do when you’re surrounded by noise? Below are some tips for dealing with diÎ?erent noisesČƒfrom upstairs neighbors to loud streets outside of your window, there’s a solution for every noise.

Talk to neighbors calmly

Don’t leave a passive-aggressive note, don’t yell at them through the walls, and try not to do anything that sounds accusatory. Ζt will be diÉ?cult to stay calm, especially if their dog woke you up at 3 o’clock in the morning right before you have a big e[am. :hile it is easy to assume the worstČƒthat they really don’t care about how their noise aÎ?ects their neighborsČƒ you should try to assume the best. Maybe they are also annoyed by their dog waking up so early and are completely unaware that the noise can be heard by their neighbors as well. Whatever the situation may be, it’s probably best to

try to talk to them when you aren’t having a noise issue so that you can approach the matter calmly. ([plain that you want things to be best for both of you and that when you wake up to the noise, you feel frustrated. Remember to be understanding that some noise is inevitable, and try to simply make them aware of their noise rather than accusing them of being selȴsh and rude. 1ow, depending on the neighbors, this may or may not work. Some people are truly selȴsh and rude, and in that case you’ll have to move on to other options.

something your landlord simply can’t help with. Depending on the noise levels, you may be able to get by with a fan, air puriȴer, humidiȴer, or space heater to soften the noises from neighbors or the street. If you’re a light sleeper or the noise is just too loud, then you might want to look into a white noise machine that allows you to change the volume. Amazon’s Echo actually has the ability to work as a white noise machine, and you can tell Ale[a to adjust the volume without getting out of bed.

Talk to your landlord

Consider earplugs

This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to “tattleâ€? on your neighbors or yell about the lack of insulation between both interior and e[terior walls, but your landlord should know that you are unhappy. He or she may help you with diÎ?erent solutions including transferring you to a top Čľoor apartment, adding some insulation to your apartment, or speaking to your neighbors for you. Each time you have to contact your landlord about noise (or anything else really), make sure to document it so that you can refer back to the notiČ´cations later.

Get a white noise machine

Maybe your neighbors continue to throw parties every Friday or maybe the street noise is

Earplugs are another option for noises that simply can’t be removed or softened. On the weekends, when you know you don’t have to wake up at a speciȴc time, you may even want to use both earplugs and a white noise machine to make sure that nothing can disturb your slumber. If none of these solutions work, then you may need to move on to another apartment. At least if you move, you can look for an upper level apartment, ask questions about the residents, and be more careful about choosing an apartment that will ȴt your needs. -ust remember to be aware of the sounds you’re making too. You don’t want to be the loud neighbor. Q %\ -ordan 0cElZain for Apartment ShoZcaVe

Eleanor, Nick and Rachel take a break between the 15th and 16th courses of a crazy rich dinner.

ALSO OPENING

‘Alpha’

WARNER BROS.

PG-13, 96 min.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

No hand-holding: A crazy pure look at a rich culture A pivotal scene in “Crazy Rich Asians” takes place over a high-stakes game of mahjong. And I had no idea what was going on. It was something different. Wonderfully so. In the film, the best romantic comedy in years, New Yorker Rachel (Constance Wu) is dating Nick (Henry Golding), a member of one of the richest families in Singapore, if not the world. How she managed to not know this after dating him for a year is a bit vague — she never Googled him? Went to his apartment? Noticed that his underwear was made from free-range unicorn flesh? — but just how wealthy he is gets driven home when the two travel to Singapore for his

friend’s wedding and she meets Nick’s family. What sets “Crazy Rich Asians” apart from other, lesser “you’re not good enough for my son” movies is that nearly every character is multifaceted and sympathetic. Matriarch Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) has doubts about Rachel, but they come from a place of love, and even kind of make sense. In fact, all of these crazy rich Asians are genuine, relatable characters. A movie that makes audiences empathize with a woman who drops $1.2 million on earrings is a movie that gets its characters right. Contemporary Hollywood movies about Asians — what few there are — typically focus on tension between Asian cultures and America’s ways of doing things. Last year’s “The

Big Sick” covered the conflict between American and Pakistani customs when it comes to dating and marriage. 1993’s “The Joy Luck Club” and “The Wedding Banquet” also dealt with differences in values. Most mainstream movies centered on Asian characters are about their experiences in an American (often code for “white”) worldview. Even in movies about them, Asians are often marked as outsiders. “Crazy Rich Asians” doesn’t do that. While Rachel is American, that’s not particularly the issue Nick’s mother has with her. Rachel blends in relatively well: She speaks the language and largely knows the customs — thanks to her Chinese immigrant mother — to be Chinese enough to count. Other than

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ (PG-13, 121 min.) DIRECTOR: Jon M. Chu STARS: Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong IN A NUTSHELL: A woman attending a wedding in Singapore with her boyfriend must deal with jealous socialites and a disapproving mom.

Rachel, there are no American characters of consequence. Moreover, there is no white character of consequence. Which brings us back to the mahjong game. Since I have only played mahjong on my phone and this game was definitely not that, I had no idea what was going on as they moved those tiles around. The filmmakers could have changed it, made it a game that more non-Asians (and non-old Jewish ladies) have familiarity with. But they didn’t. “Crazy Rich Asians” distinguishes itself from other American films featuring Asians because it makes no effort to dilute the culture in which it takes place. It is simply itself, and thanks to that, non-Asian (or, really, non-Chinese) viewers get a look at a culture in a way that isn’t framed through anyone else’s eyes. This family’s culture does not exist simply in relationship to most Americans’ way of life. The characters are not outsiders. The game is mahjong, and if you don’t know how to play, too bad. TNT orders “Alienist” sequel series “The Angel of Darkness”

Sweet, strange and at times slightly scary, the Ice Age fable “Alpha” tells the origin story of man’s best friend. The film explains, in the manner of fact-based fairy tale — with a little bit of hooey and just enough history — how a boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and a dog went from snarling at each other to curling up on the couch together. It’s a bit cheesy, but so what? MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Unrated, 104 min.

William Shakespeare’s plays have been squeezed into myriad shapes that work surprisingly well. This version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” set in contemporary La La Land, is not one of those success stories. Casey Wilder Mott’s eccentric staging primarily draws attention to itself, confusing an already knotty ball of interconnected threads. M.O.

The voice of America’s soul

MOLLY RILEY (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

1942-2018 Somebody somewhere once asked the human embodiment of American soul music how she would define American soul music. Aretha Franklin replied, “Being able to bring to the surface that which is happening inside.” Sounds about right. That ability — to externalize humanity in melody — made Franklin one the most pivotal vocalists of the 20th century. Franklin — who died Thursday at age 76 after a battle with pancreatic cancer — didn’t invent the notion that singing should expose something profound about the singer, but she did show us how it’s done, freighting her words with maximum emotion and routing her syllables through two dozen different notes in a single exhalation. Oftentimes, when we talk about what “good singing” sounds like, we’re unthinkingly talking about what Franklin’s singing sounds like. Imagine the strange frustration of being that influential. Your big ideas become the air we breathe. And who felt that Aretha Franklin hadn’t been properly recognized in the final decades of her life? Aretha Franklin, for one. Years ago, she told her

biographer David Ritz that the media hadn’t been paying enough attention to all the trophies and medals being thrown at her, so it was time to type up another book. Ritz went ahead and penned his second Franklin biography, 2014’s “Respect,” but this time, without his subject’s input. Instead, Franklin’s friends and family tell the story of a griefstunned child whose mother died of a heart attack before Franklin was 10 years old; the story of a teenage gospel singer who had given birth to two children before she had turned 15; the story of

an ascendant pop star who suffered abuse at the hand of her husband-manager; the story of an era-defining artist who, outside of her music, kept her anguish entirely to herself. As Franklin’s longtime producer Jerry Wexler once told Ritz, “She was a woman who suffered silently.” But when her music first erupted into the wider American consciousness in the late 1960s, all the masses really knew about Franklin was that she was young, black and female — and considering the times, that made everything Franklin was surfacing feel radical. The vastness of expression in her voice was equal parts paralyzing and galvanizing. It asked the world to think. It demanded respect. It quickly became a symbol of the civil rights movement and, after that, a sonic emblem of American progress and virtue — the yearning sound of who we still hope to become. “Thanks to her example, women vocalists of all races were allowed a freedom, a chance at uninhibited transcendence,” gospel scholar Anthony Heilbut wrote in his 2012 book, “The Fan Who Knew Too Much,” adding that Franklin’s influence, of course, stretched beyond music. “She introduced forms of self-representation that would profoundly change the way black women lived in the world.” CHRIS RICHARDS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Franklin tributes pour in “Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade.”

“The most consistent voice in music for 60 years has been Aretha Franklin’s voice. … The world of music has lost a bit of its soul.”

“This morning my longest friend in this world went home to be with our Father. I will miss her so much but I know she’s at peace.”

Smokey Robinson, in a statement. Franklin and Robinson collaborated on the hit 1979 duet “Ooo Baby Baby.”

“I’m absolutely devastated by Aretha’s passing. She was truly one of a kind. She was more than the Queen of Soul. She was a national treasure to be cherished.” Clive Davis, via Twitter. Davis collaborated with Franklin after signing her to his Arista label in 1980.

“We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion.” Franklin’s family, in a statement.

Franklin flipped ‘Respect’ into a feminist anthem MUSIC It’s easy to forget that “Respect” wasn’t originally Aretha Franklin’s song. But the “Queen of Soul” sang it like it was made for her, and for only her. She turned Otis Redding’s song into a worldwide anthem — especially for the feminist and civil rights movements — making it one of the most recognizable songs of all time. Redding’s 1965 original focused on a man asking his woman for some respect after he worked a long, hard day. But Franklin flipped the track in 1967, adding new lyrics to the song — including spelling out R-E-S-P-E-C-T and repeating the line “sock it to me.” Franklin’s version showcased a confident woman demanding respect from her man — and the power of the track connected to the world at large. Her version outperformed the original: It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Franklin her first two Grammy Awards. It also endured as one of the most celebrated cover songs ever released. The Library of Congress added “Respect” to the National Recording Registry, and it was ranked fifth in Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” “This next song is a song that a girl took away from me,” Redding said before a performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. She sure did. MESFIN FEKADU (AP)

@AGENTK, joking about a New York Times article on New Zealand’s avocado shortage. Residents have turned to crime in order to obtain the fruit and sell it on the resulting black market. One homeowner in Auckland put up razor wire around an avocado tree to prevent thieves from swiping the fruit.

@BRILITTLEBIT, tweeting about the story of a 42-year-old

woman who went to the doctor complaining of a drooping eyelid, only for doctors to discover a cyst above her eyeball that contained a contact lens. It is suspected that the contact “migrated” to the woman’s eyelid after she was hit in the face during a badminton game — at the age of 14. Doctors were surprised the lens hadn’t caused severe pain over 28 years.

“This year, I’m going for the Ziploc aesthetic.” @A_WEBSTER, discussing the latest unusual brand collaboration, between the popular Japanese clothing label Beams Couture and plastic bag maker Ziploc. The two teamed up for a nine-piece limited-edition accessories line. The odd, yet futuristic-looking collaboration includes a visor, baseball cap, apron, fanny pack, backpack and umbrella. All items prominently feature the name Ziploc.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) It may be time for you to go through your belongings and decide what to keep and what to toss. Don’t be hasty, but trust your instincts. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) What you see today is likely to pique your interest in something you’ve never before considered. You may make some money. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You mustn’t be distracted by issues that do not directly connect with your major objective today. Maintain a narrow focus. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll have to pay attention to another while satisfying your desires today. A creative approach is required, but you can do it.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’ve been warned about a likely development, but you haven’t yet taken it seriously. That’s about to change today.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You are more determined than ever to follow a certain path; don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it, especially one whom you distrust. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You have more to offer today than you may think, and someone is waiting for you to step out of your comfort zone and put it all on the line.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

“I got older and I was like, I really want to get married, I really want to have kids.”

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s marriage fell apart after a fight over a pile of poop he found in their bed, U.K. newspaper the Mirror reported Wednesday. Depp reportedly accused Heard and her friends of soiling the sheets after he arrived late to her 30th birthday party in April 2016. Heard blamed her Yorkshire terrier, Boo, though a worker who cleaned the sheets claimed the mess was too big for the dog. A source close to Depp said there is “strong, photographic evidence that connected Amber to the feces.” The couple filed for divorce in May 2016. (EXPRESS)
