Stocks Fall Amid Global Worries Dow plummets 419 points in a return to last week’s wild ride

;Yedec_Y Me[i Some investors who bought in the middle of last week decided to sell Thursday after they were confronted with a raft of bad news.

D[m Oeha Just when Wall Street seemed to have settled down, a barrage of bad economic reports collided with fresh worries about European banks Thursday and triggered a global sell-off in stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 419 points — a return to the wild swings that gripped the stock market last week. Stocks were only part of a dramatic day across the financial markets. The price of oil fell $5, gold set another record, the 10-year Treasury hit its lowest yield, and the average mortgage rate fell to its lowest in at least 40 years. The selling began in Asia, where Japanese exports fell for a fifth-straight month, and continued in Europe, where bank stocks were hammered because of worries about debt problems there, which have proved hard to contain. The rating agency recently downgraded the city’s portfolio from AAA, to AA and interim Treasurer Steve Ongele says the city has lost faith in S&P’s judgment. IBM’s Chips Mimic Brain Tech company touts 2 prototypes that can behave like humans IWd <hWdY_iYe Computers, like humans, can learn. But when Google tries to fill in your search box based only on a few keystrokes, or your iPhone predicts words as you type a text message, it’s only a narrow mimicry of what the human brain is capable. The challenge in training a computer to behave like a human brain is technological and physiological, testing the limits of computers and brain science. But researchers from IBM Corp. say they’ve taken a key step toward combining the two worlds. The company announced Thursday that it has built two prototype chips that it says process data more like how humans digest informa-

9e]d_j_l[ 9ecfkj_d] Technologists have long imagined computers that learn like humans. Your iPhone or Google’s servers can be programmed to predict certain behavior based on past events. But the techniques being explored by IBM and other companies and university research labs around “cognitive computing” could lead to chips that are better able to adapt to unexpected information. IBM’s interest in the chips lies in their ability to potentially help process real-world signals such as temperature, sound or motion and make sense of them for computers. (AP)

tion than the chips that now power PCs and supercomputers. The uses of the IBM chips so far are prosaic, such as steering a simulated car through a maze, or playing Pong. It may be a decade or longer before the chips make their way out of the lab and into actual products. The chips’ ability to adapt to types of information that it wasn’t specifically programmed to expect is a key feature. Dharmendra Modha, project leader for IBM Research, said the

new chips have parts that behave like digital “neurons” and “synapses” that make them different than other chips. Each “core,” or processing engine, has computing, communication and memory functions. A computer with the power of the human brain is not yet near. But Modha said the latest development is an important step. “It really changes the perspective from ‘What if?’ to ‘What now?’” Modha said. “Today we proved it was possible.” JORDAN ROBERTSON (AP)

U.S., Allies Press Assad to Resign International efforts signal patience with Syria is at an end

MWi^_d]jed Executing a global squeeze play, the United States and its European allies on Thursday demanded an end to four decades of brutal family dictatorship in Syria and underscored the tough talk with new sanctions on President Bashar Assad’s government. The new efforts signal the end of the world’s thin patience for Assad, once viewed as a Westernlooking pragmatist who might expand freedoms at home and help achieve an Arab peace deal with Israel. The messages coincided with

a U.N. report recommending that Syria be referred to the International Criminal Court for investigation of possible crimes against humanity. In Thursday’s coordinated statements, President Obama and the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Canada and the European Union called for Assad to resign,

Rebels in Libya seized the country’s last functioning oil refinery Thursday and claimed to have captured most of the nearby city of Zawiya, 30 miles west of the capital along the Mediterranean coast. A rebel victory in Zawiya could leave Moammar Gadhafi nearly cornered in his stronghold of Tripoli. Rebel fighters are closing in on the capital from the west and the south, while NATO controls the seas to the north. The opposition is in charge of most of the eastern half of the country. The Libyan leader has given no indication he is willing to relinquish power, though there are signs that his 42-year-old rule may be unraveling. Libya’s civil war erupted after anti-regime protests spread across the country in February. The rebel advance then stalled until earlier this month, when opposition fight-

Attacks in Israel Up Sinai Tensions Officials: Militants from Gaza entered via Egyptian border

The best iPhone and Android app for Washington Metro riders just got better!

@[hkiWb[c Gunmen who crossed from the Egyptian desert launched a series of attacks Thursday in southern Israel, killing eight people and threatening to destabilize a volatile border region that includes the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula. Israel blamed an armed Palestinian group from neighboring Gaza. Israeli forces killed five of the gunmen along the border with Egypt, the military said, and launched an airstrike inside Gaza that killed five militants from the same group and a child. They suggested that Egypt’s recent political upheaval and a resulting power vacuum in Sinai had allowed militants to open a

Basketbrawl in Beijing Benches clear in what was supposed to be a goodwill trip for Georgetown 8[_`_d]

:_fbecWj_Y <h_Yj_ed

What began as a goodwill trip to China for the Georgetown men’s basketball team turned violent Thursday night, when its exhibition game against Chinese professional club the Bayi Rockets deteriorated into a benches-clearing melee in which players exchanged blows, chairs were thrown, and spectators tossed full water bottles at the Hoyas players and coaches as they headed to the locker room. Georgetown coach John Thompson III pulled his players off the Olympic Sports Center Stadium court with 9 minutes, 32 seconds

left in the game and the scored tied at 64 after a chaotic scene in which members of both the Georgetown and Bayi Rockets teams began swinging wildly and tackling one another. There were an estimated halfdozen individual altercations on the court, and eventually some Chinese onlookers joined the fracas, including one wielding a stanchion. As the brawl spilled beyond the baseline, an unidentified Bayi player pushed Georgetown’s Aaron Bowen through a partition to the ground before repeatedly punching the sophomore guard while sitting on his chest. Georgetown senior center Henry Sims had a chair tossed at him by an unidentified person, and Georgetown fresh-

Thursday’s bench-clearing brawl marred the orchestrated harmony of Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to China. On his first visit there as vice president, Biden seemed to click with Xi Jinping — the country’s leader-in-waiting — while stressing the need for better ties between the two countries during talks in Beijing on Thursday. However, some friction arose as reporters covering Biden’s visit were told to leave the room when the vice president was still speaking. White House press handlers believed they had an agreement that reporters would be permitted to remain in the room until Biden had completed his opening remarks. (AP)

<_]^j_d] CWZ One of the most surreal sequences unfolded early in the third quarter, when Rockets forward Xu Zhonghao approached Hoyas coach John Thompson III while he was standing near the Georgetown bench and began yelling at him at close range during the course of play. Thompson stared at Xu in disbelief before officials halted play for several minutes. Moments later, Bayi player Wang Lei was called for a technical foul after vehemently disputing a call. (T WP)

man forward Moses Ayegba, who was wearing a brace on his right leg, limped onto the court with a chair in his right hand. According to Georgetown officials, Ayegba had been struck, prompting him to grab a chair in self-defense The brawl occurred one night after Vice President Joe Biden,

who is in Beijing on a four-day visit, attended a Georgetown game against another Chinese club. That game, which Georgetown won, passed without incident. A State Department official called the melee “unfortunate.” “We look to these types of exchanges to promote good sportsmanship and

strengthen our people-to-people contact with China,” said the official. A Chinese Embassy spokesman in Washington said he had not heard of the incident. The official China news agency Xinhua did not have an immediate account of the game, and while other prominent Chinese websites such as

163.com and Sina.com posted stories, government censors shortly thereafter took them down. It was unclear whether the brawl would affect similar ventures in the future. The Georgetown delegation — which included university President John DeGioia, other school officials and prominent alumni and boosters — was scheduled to fly to Shanghai on Friday The fracas that ended the contest marked the second time both benches emptied in a rugged game marred by fouls, an inordinate number of which went against the Hoyas. By halftime, Bayi had 11 fouls, and Georgetown had 28. “The situations we were put in went beyond losing your cool,” Thompson said afterward. “It went to, ‘I need to protect myself.’ That got to a level above and beyond competition and competing.” GENE WANG (THE WASHINGTON POST )

You know how there’s couponing and then there’s extreme couponing? Well, I’ve always prided myself on being not just a transit user, but an extreme transit user. In situations in which any sane person would just call a taxi or rent a car, I stubbornly look for some random bus that will get me close enough so my legs can carry me the rest of the way.

“Art is always cheerful, no matter what the weather, no matter what the news. It’s always nice to see a friendly face on the way to work!”

In 10 years of reporting around the D.C. area — and often way out into the burbs — this strategy never failed me. Until last week. I needed to get to a location in Sterling, Va., which isn’t particularly close to our downtown D.C. office and is even farther from my home in Baltimore. So I wasn’t too surprised when I punched my destination into Metro’s Trip Planner and got the familiar response of “Unable to

return an itinerary.” That’s what Metro always says when there’s no service within a mile of your destination. But I am perfectly capable of walking more than a mile, so I was pleased to see that Google Maps (which now offers local transit directions) had a plan for me. It would take four hours and 20 minutes, but if I left early enough, I’d get to my appointment on time. Sold.

The first half of the journey went completely according to plan: MARC Train to Union Station, Metro to L’Enfant Plaza, Metrobus to Dulles Airport. That’s a long haul, but with my iPad, it was like being at the office. I sent off a slew of work emails, caught up on some blogs and planned my brother’s weekend visit. I was still feeling pleased with myself when, as Google promised, the Dulles 2 Dulles Connector pulled up. For 50 cents, this mini-shuttle was supposed to whisk me to the Dulles 28 Centre, a shopping strip with a Wegmans and other suburban delights. And from there, it would be a 1.7-mile walk to my final destination. As the bus arrived at my stop, I realized the walk part of this plan might be a problem. I managed to make it down Pacific Boulevard all right — there wasn’t a sidewalk, but the grassy strip to the side of the shopping center was plenty wide. At the turn onto VA-625W, however, I began to freak out. I started along the side of the road, hoping I’d soon spy a friendly cement strip that’d protect me from the many cars speeding by. Instead, I saw that the map wanted me to dash across three lanes of traffic. So I did something extreme. I went back to Wegmans and called a cab. (And, miraculously, I managed to make my appointment.) You might think that would have taught me my lesson. But on my ride home — after getting a lift to the Vienna Metro station — I realized that I could have walked north to the Washington & Old Dominion Trail to get across Route 28, which would have made the trek longer but totally doable. Maybe next time.

Fedo Kf" Fb[Wi[0 Washington’s airports authority wants more money from federal and state governments to build the second phase of the Metro rail line to Dulles International Airport. The board of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is overseeing construction of the extension to Dulles and Loudoun County, said Wednesday it wants Virginia to contribute $500 million and the federal government to provide loans of $700 million to $1.2 billion. Audit: $1M Improperly Given to Peaceoholics The District of Columbia auditor says then-Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s administration improperly awarded more than Moten $1 million in no-bid gr ant s t o a l o c al violence-prevention group. The report from Auditor Yolanda Branche says the nonprofit group Peaceoholics was poorly equipped to manage city money it received from 2006 to 2010, according to The Washington Post. Ronald Moten, a co-founder of Peaceoholics, says the group has learned from its mistakes and will get additional training. (AP)

Insurance Policy Probed in Aruba Source: Man sought money 2 days after Md. woman vanished EhWd`[ij[ijWZ" 7hkXW Investigators in Aruba are examining a travel insurance policy and digital photographs linked to a detained Gaithersburg, Md., man and his missing traveling companion, Aruban Solicitor General Taco Stein said in an interview Thursday. Gar y V. Giordano, 50, has been held in Aruba since Aug. 5 as authorities investigate the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, 35, of Frederick County. Giorda-

no reported that she apparently drowned while snorkeling, authorities have said. Stein said the photographs were found in a camera that apparently was recovered from a hotel room where the two stayed. “We surmise it’s his camera, but there’s not yet a definite point of view on that,” Stein said. “And there are explicit pictures on that camera.” The Associated Press, citing an unidentified source, reported that Giordano purchased the $1.5 million American Express Travel Insurance policy shortly before he left for Aruba and that the accidental-death benefit covered only

the length of their short trip. Two days after reporting Gardner missing, Giordano sought to claim the money, according to the AP. Stein said that Gardner and Giordano were last seen together at the Rum Reef Bar & Grill about 4 p.m. on Aug. 2. Giordano, 50, reported her missing shortly after 6 p.m., saying

Suspected Counterfeit Dealers Raided by Police Law enforcement officers have raided two dozen Ocean City businesses suspected of trafficking in counterfeit goods. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials conducted the raids on Wednesday, with help from the FBI and state and local police. A lawsuit filed last summer in federal court in Baltimore by luxury handbag maker Coach Inc. says that an investigator for the company entered 13 stores in the city in June and bought counterfeit bags, wallets and other items for prices ranging from $20 to $75. A motorcycle rally expected to roll Friday through Northern Virginia to honor the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks could complicate the region’s afternoon rush hour. The rally is expected to arrive around 2 p.m. Friday in Loudoun County from Maryland. Riders will then take the Dulles Greenway, the Dulles Toll Road and Interstate 66 to Arlington. Police plan to close lanes those roads and I-66 eastbound inside the Capital Beltway to give the motorcyclists a clear ride. (AP)

that she hadn’t made it to shore after the two had gone snorkeling. But investigators are boring in on what they say are inconsistencies in Giordano’s story and presented those inconsistencies on Monday to a judge, who ordered Giordano detained for another 16 days. Among the inconsistencies, Stein said, was how Giordano described the sea at the time of the snorkeling. “He said it was a rough sea and we came to the conclusion that the sea was extremely calm,” Stein said, adding that there “were a number of things like that that were contradicting each other. And that’s why we presented the case.”

Gov. Bob McDonnell says Virginia ended the last fiscal year with a surplus of nearly $545 million. McDonnell disclosed the new figure Thursday in a speech to the General Assembly’s money committees. Last month, the governor said Virginia ended the year with a $311 million surplus. The new figure reflects state agency savings and agency balances that were not reflected in the previous amount. McDonnell announced that he will allocate $30 million of the surplus to a new reserve fund he’s asking the legislature to create to help the state deal with future federal spending cuts. (AP)

Redskins like what they see from new defensive additions

C[[j j^[ D[m : _d :$9$

J^[ H[Zia_di The numbers don’t lie. The Redskins’ defense was awful last season. During their first season in defensive coordinator Jim Haslett’s 3-4 scheme, the Redskins allowed 389 yards per game, making them the second-worst defense in the NFL and giving Washington its worst statistical effort in 56 years. “We weren’t happy with it,” linebacker Lorenzo Alexander said of the defense’s play. The defensive unit that takes the field Friday night against Indianapolis, however, is brimming with enthusiasm after a solid training camp and an impressive effort

Barry Cofield: The former Giant shifts to nose tackle in the Redskins’ 3-4 and made his presence felt with several QB hits last week. “He’s exactly what you’re looking for,” Haslett said.

Jarvis Jenkins: From Day One, the secondround draft pick from Clemson has drawn raves for his work at the defensive end position. “He has the physical ability to be a good pass rusher in this league,” Haslett said.

in the preseason opener against Pittsburgh. “It’s a pretty formidable group,” Haslett said. With the right personnel in key

places, a renewed focus on fundamentals and an increased comfort level with the 3-4, Washington’s defense is trending up from embarrassment to potential strength. “We had a whole year to make our mistakes, understand concepts and figure out how we play in it, and I think you can tell the dif-

ference,” Alexander said. After allowing teams to move the ball at will last season, the Redskins delivered an eye-opening performance against the Steelers — giving up just 186 yards in a 16-7 win. Granted, Pittsburgh did not play its starters very long, but the progress made by Washington’s defense was evident. The Redskins were ill-suited for the 3-4 last year, but the arrivals of Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen have given the team a presence on the defensive line that was lacking last year. Rookies Ryan Kerrigan and Jarvis Jenkins have also impressed so far. Several Redskins players said the biggest factor in their newfound confidence was working through the details of the 3-4 on a daily basis — and forgetting the ghastly numbers from last season. “I feel like I picked up the X’s and O’s really quickly [last year],” safety Reed Doughty said. “But the nuances and the techniques of the defense, that’s what you really learn in the second year.” ELLIOT T SMITH

?jÊi W AdeYaekj0 The UFC has made it to network prime-time programming. Mixed martial arts’ dominant promotional company announced a landmark seven-year deal with Fox on Thursday, putting four UFC shows on the main network each year and a wide array of programming on its cable networks. The UFC will be prominent on FX, with live fights on most Friday nights and a revamped version of “The Ultimate Fighter,” the UFC’s popular reality show. (AP)

Nats’ Problems Start at the Top Without a natural leadoff hitter, club’s offense is lacking Nationals manager Davey Johnson approached Danny Espinosa before Wednesday’s game to give him a heads up about a change he had in mind. He told the second baseman that he was dropping him down in the batting order, from his customary No. 2 spot all the way to sixth. For a lot of guys, it would seem to be a demotion. Espinosa’s response? “Thanks.” Espinosa has hit 51 points higher this season batting sixth than he has batting second. As part of his lineup maneuvering, Johnson shifted shortstop Ian Desmond from the bottom of the order back to the leadoff spot, where he began the season unsuccessfully. One of the Nationals’ biggest offensive problems this season has been their failure to put runners on base ahead of sluggers like Ryan

Zimmerman and Michael Morse. In a game so heavily influenced by psychology, the team simply has had no one with the right mental

and physical approach to thrive at the top of the order. “My druthers would be to lead off Espi, having Desi hitting two,” Johnson said. But like other Washington managers before him, he’s staring down a roster with no natural leadoff hitter, a significant handicap. Desmond, Espinosa, Rick Ankiel, Roger Bernadina and Jerry Hairston Jr., now in Milwaukee, have all tried their hand atop the order.

General manager Mike Rizzo attempted to secure a leadoff man at the trade deadline, with most reports indicating his primary target was Minnesota’s Denard Span, but nothing materialized. He’ll likely renew his efforts in the offseason, but Johnson is hoping the last six weeks might provide some revelations. “I think you have to plan on who you know you have,” Johnson said. “I mean, you can’t plan on something that’s not reality. I’m a realist. I’m an optimist-realist. And I’m also confident in human nature, that you can grow into something. But you have to be given the opportunity.” The best leadoff hitter in the organization might be middle infielder Stephen Lombardozzi, who has hit a combined .315 between Class AA Harrisburg and Class AAA Syracuse. His .365 onbase percentage is better than any Washington regular has posted this year. He’ll likely get his audition after rosters expand Sept. 1. But if Lombardozzi is batting leadoff for the Nationals in 2012, it will mean either Desmond or Espinosa is playing elsewhere. DEREK TURNER

After Heartbreak, Mids Set the Bar High There once was a time when Navy would have been delighted with a 9-4 season that ended with a bowl game and included wins over Notre Dame and Army. Under the current standards, however, that just wasn’t good enough. A hard-to-swallow 14-6 loss to Air Force forced the Midshipmen to yield their seven-year stronghold on the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, a coveted prize that represents superiority among the service academies. “That was like someone ripping your heart out,” coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “But you have to put it back in and start breathing again.”

JONATHAN NEWTON/TWP

DWlo <eejXWbb

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo is fueled by last year’s disappointing loss to Air Force.

Memories of last season have provided the Midshipmen all the incentive they need in 2011. The Mids return 29 of the 34 players

listed on the final 2010 offensive depth chart, including eight starters. But Navy lost double-threat quarterback Ricky Dobbs.

He will be replaced by senior Kriss Proctor, who will be directing the run-oriented, triple-option attack that last year ranked sixth in the nation in yards rushing. It isn’t fancy, but the grind-itout offense — inherited from excoach Paul Johnson — has turned around the program. Navy is 70-33 over the last eight years after going 3-30 from 2000-02. The success of the option depends on the quarterback, and Proctor is ready to do his part. “I’m looking forward to taking over and leading this team,” he said. “I think I’m ready, prepared and have the experience and potential to follow in the footsteps of all the QBs that have preceded me.” (AP)

Strasburg Remains Behind Ovechkin The Alex Ovechkin-Stephen Strasburg debate isn’t much of one at all. The Washington Post’s Jason Reid incurred the wrath of Capitals fans recently by daring to say that Strasburg is the city’s biggest sports star. Reid has since seen the light of day, even offering up a version of a mea culpa. And, of course, there is no comparison between the Capitals’ superstar and the Na8o CWjj tionals’ phenom. Im[died Ovechkin, for whatever ills he has as a team leader, owns two MVP trophies and has led the Caps to the best regular-season record in the Eastern Conference for two-straight years. The playoffs are another story, but at least he’s playing in the postseason.

IjhWiXkh]Êi ijWhji Wh[ X_]][h [l[dji$ IjhWicWi Yec[i Xkj edY[ [l[ho Ó l[ ZWoi$ Strasburg, on the other hand, has pitched in the big leagues a whopping two months. Tommy John surgery cut his season short last year before an innings cap could. The former top draft pick’s potential is off the charts, which is why each of his rehab starts in the minor leagues is big news, but he has a ways to go to accomplish something substantial. Where Reid has a point, though, is that Strasburg’s starts are bigger events. Strasmas comes but once every five days. And last year’s injury took away a whole year’s worth of chances to see him in action. Ovechkin performs exceptionally well for 80-plus games each, making him the better player (for now). But Strasburg is the bigger draw (again, for now). To reach Matt Swenson, e-mail matt.swenson@readexpress.com

QB Terrelle Pryor will be part of the NFL’s supplemental draft on Monday. FHE <EEJ87BB

Pryor Eligible for Draft But Will Serve Penalty Former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor was declared eligible for Monday’s NFL supplemental draft but must sit out the first five games after he signs a contract. The league said on Thursday that Pryor’s failure to cooperate with the NCAA and hiring of an agent in violation of NCAA rules led to his suspension. (AP) FHE 87I;87BB

MLB Bans First Player For Failing HGH Test Mike Jacobs is the first player suspended by Major League Baseball for a positive HGH test. The 30-year-old minor league first baseman and former major leaguer received a 50-game suspension Thursday for taking the banned performance-enhancing substance and was subsequently released by the Colorado Rockies. (AP)

Matt Bradley finally said aloud, on the record, what the Washington Capitals players and coaches have been skirting around for several seasons. He confirmed the whispers, the pointed eye rolls and the general feeling in the Caps’ dressing room, that something was lacking. Someone was lacking. Bradley’s “some8o JhWY[[ one” is A lexander >Wc_bjed Semin, a tremendous talent when he feels like it. He just often doesn’t feel like it. That’s been obvious to anyone who watches the Caps, which is why there were a lot of raised eyebrows in January when the Capitals re-signed him. Why keep him around for another season, and at $6.7 million, if he doesn’t want to truly commit? Of course, Bradley’s comments came on the radio in August, after he left the team, not last winter, when he could have said them in the dressing room, where they might have done some good. Bradley pulled his punches a bit

Alex Ovechkin has pledged to come into training camp in better shape than last year.

when discussing the bigger “someone,” Alex Ovechkin, praising his on-ice play. That’s pretty typical and fair, because Ovechkin plays as hard as anyone in the league. But Bradley also hinted at Ovechkin’s conditioning deficiencies. That’s been a hot topic among Caps fans for

some time. Ovechkin has even tacitly acknowledged the fact by saying he’s going to show up at camp in better shape next month. One way to stay in shape would be to participate in more practices. There is no question that the Caps’ stars sit out of a lot of practices.

Miami AD Pledges ‘There Will Be a Better Day’

Stadium Workers Go On Strike in Brazil

9ebb[][ <eejXWbb

The nearly 2,000 workers renovating Maracana Stadium for the 2014 World Cup Rio de Janeiro went on strike Thursday, citing unsafe conditions and demanding better pay and health care. Maracana, one of the world’s great soccer stadiums, is to host the World Cup final and the 2013 Confederations Cup. (AP)

For the first time, some Miami players are speaking out about the scandal that has rocked the Hurricanes’ football program and sparked an NCAA investigation. “Know this for sure everyone hurts! We all feel pain!” defensive back Brandon McGee posted on his

Twitter page at 6:29 a.m. Thursday, about 90 minutes before the Hurricanes took the field for the first of two scheduled practices. Also ending his silence: Miami athletic director Shawn Eichorst, who promised fans “there will be a better day.” Miami returned to the practice field Thursday with coach Al

Golden saying his team is recovering from the “shock” of the claims former booster Nevin Shapiro made in a Yahoo Sports article this week. Shapiro, now serving 20 years in federal prison for his role in a $930 million Ponzi scheme, said he provided Miami players with cash, prostitutes, cars and other gifts over the past decade. (AP)

7\j[hj^ek]^ji0 Michael Vick told GQ magazine in its most recent issue that he didn’t want to come to Philadelphia to be a third-string quarterback after his release from federal prison two years ago. But commissioner Roger Goodell was among those who convinced him Philadelphia was the right destination. While happy how it ended up, Vick said his top choices were to play for either Cincinnati or Buffalo last year. (AP)

Ovechkin’s not the only one, but he’s the one who wears the “C.” While he didn’t name any other names, Bradley called the team’s dressing room “too nonchalant” and cited a lack of discipline. The Caps seem to agree: Their entire busy offseason seemed to be devoted to getting more grown-ups, not just in age but in demeanor. But more telling were coach Bruce Boudreau’s remarks of a week ago, when he said of Ovechkin, “I think he’s a great captain on the ice.” No one ever said of Steve Yzerman or Mark Messier, probably the two best captains in hockey history, that they were great “on the ice.” Wearing the “C” is a full-time job, and Ovechkin has been allowed to phone it in for too long It’s clear that Boudreau expects more of him this season than just 81 hard games, and it’s high time someone did. Boudreau said he wants Ovechkin to take his role as team captain “a step further,” and he wants to establish “a more serious tone” in the dressing room. He also said, “I fully expect Alex Ovechkin to come back into camp mean as a bear.” If he doesn’t, if nothing changes with the Caps on and off the ice this season, Ovechkin won’t be the only one feeling mean as a bear. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Jason Momoa ACTOR, ART LOVER, NOT THE GOVERNATOR With his toned bod and handsome features, Jason Momoa seems all alpha male, but he warns us that it’s all acting. “I take out aggression on set. I’m not even king of my own house!” The “Game of Thrones” star plays the title role in the new film “Conan the Barbarian,” made popular by the fantasy books and 1982 Arnold Schwarzenneger film by the same name. Momoa claims the actionpacked portrayal of the hero, opening today, is an edgier take on the strongman. But this Conan has a soft side, just like Momoa. This is a breakout role for you. Is “Conan” a career highlight? I’m a true fan of “Conan,” the comic books and the story. When I got the role, it was an honor. I’m truly a fan playing the dream role.

Did you read the books when you were a kid? I did. I haven’t read all of them — there’s a lot! But my big thing was both my parents were painters, so I was a really big fan of Frank Frazetta’s “Conan” paintings. I love the way he captured his movements. Does watching the film in 3-D make it a different experience? I had seen it in 2-D. I wasn’t too thrilled about wearing the glasses, but then I saw it, and I was shocked and impressed. For one, it sinks you into this beautiful world. The visual art just sucks you in. How did you prepare for the role? I just put myself in the hands of people in charge, and they took over. Like the guys who taught me

Was it a physical challenge? How much did you work out each day? Before we started filming, I trained six hours a day. But when we started filming, I tried to get two hours in. Sometimes I could only get one in, but we did stunts all day long, so I was getting cardio. It was just hard to keep the muscle mass on. Have people been comparing you to Arnold Schwarzenegger? No, it’s impossible to be compared to Arnold. He’s Arnold; there’s only one. I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes even if they said I was. I’m not striving to be him, and I could never take anything away from his Conan. It’s like he’s Sean Connery and I’m Daniel Craig. Two great but different performances. Why should women see this film? There’s some powerful female characters in it. And there’s a great love story. He’s this really strong guy, but we also tried to keep him vulnerable. Conan has this hard shell, but he really takes this woman in his hands and trusts her and loves her. I’m naked in it, too — that’s always a plus for women. You’re a father of two young kids. When will you let them watch it? They’ll be, like, 30. It’ll be so outdated, they’ll say, “Dad, this is 3-D? We’re in 6-D now. This is stupid.’” K ATHERINE BOYLE (E XPRESS)

Drug Enforcement Agency Museum And Visitors Center The main exhibit is a sprawling history, not just of illegal drugs and their traffickers, but of the subcultures that made substance abuse cool. The jazz scene, the Beat movement and ’80s yuppie scum are all implicated. Also guilty: the medical industry of the late 1800s, when moms quieted babies with opiates and nasty coughs were treated with heroin. Here and there lurk graphic images of dead people, to remind us that drugs are society’s greatest evil, even though, yes, it is amusing that someone hid contraband in a fake book titled “Guilt.”

In my previous life as a high school English teacher, I taught “Hamlet.” A lot. And I did a pretty good job of it, in that no kids suffered head injuries from passing out due to boredom. But when I saw the Royal Shakespeare Company’s latest film version, starring David Tennant, I felt like I needed to call up each and every student and apologize for getting it wrong. Tennant’s performance turned 8o Ah_ij[d everything I thought FW][#A_hXo I knew about Hamlet inside out and upside down. I had long been a Tennant fan, but this turned my “Doctor Who” fangirl crush into real respect for him as an actor. And now … he’s in “Fright Night,” which opens Friday. I haven’t seen it and probably won’t. (I don’t really do scary movies, as I have a ridiculous tendency to believe them.) “Fright Night” might be good, and I get very excited when I see the trailer in which Tennant has a line. But part of me wonders why someone with such talent (and probably enough money to at least roll around on a bed of twenties, if not hundreds) would do what looks like a campy horror film. That’s not to say popular roles are a step down any more than doing television after establishing a film career is. But I have to wonder whether the man who redefined Hamlet for me found the same challenge playing a vampire hunter.

In the thrilling ‘Attack the Block,’ an unlikely gang of teens tries to stop an alien invasion <_bc H[l_[m Like the big budget, star-heavy “Cowboys & Aliens,” the British import “Attack the Block” pits invading extraterrestrials against a breed of earthlings rarely called upon to battle them. Unlike last month’s film, though, this one’s heroes are not archetypes from a bygone fiction genre; they’re nobodies yanked from the streets of a modern city. (The actors playing them are nobodies, too.) Given what it does with its ingredients, the film might as well be called “Attack the Blockbuster.” The title doesn’t refer to blockbusters, of course, but to housing blocks, the depressing and danger-

ous apartment projects where England’s poor live. For mysterious reasons, aliens have chosen to attack a single South London complex, the fast, furry beasts singling out five young thugs who would otherwise be preying on innocent humans. The movie’s panache and energy were undeniable when it screened for critics several weeks ago. At the time, its undercurrent of class-consciousness was simply that — a subtle theme with many precedents. But seen again, days after riots overtook London, the movie looks prescient, maybe even important. In its own, unpreachy way, the film condemns society’s two main ways of dealing with the discontented poor: policing them into submission and pretending they don’t exist. Take the way it opens. We watch as a nurse, walking home from work, is surrounded by five men in hoodies. A knife comes out; threats are made. Just as we fear robbery

“Senna” is what film critics might call a TMSI movie, as in: Trust me, see it. And some viewers will have to go on trust, because on paper, they may not consider a documentary about Formula One auto racing their particular cup of tea. But “Senna” succeeds precisely because it doesn’t focus on racing per se, instead profiling Formula One driver Ayrton Senna da Silva, three-time world champion, Brazilian national hero and altogether superb young man whose promise was extinguished far too early when he died on the track in 1994 at age 34. Another reason “Senna” works is that director Asif Kapadia eschews the usual childhood scenes that have become a hallmark of biographical documentaries. Instead, he plunges viewers directly into the whiteknuckle action of high-test auto racing, giving them a taste of its adrenaline and appeal with jittery driver’s-eye-view footage. “Senna” may not be a rags-toriches story, but it nonetheless celebrates resolve, hard work, integrity and guts. Expertly crafted and urgently paced, “Senna” has everything a major motion picture needs to win over audiences: riveting action, heartbreaking drama and a protagonist everyone can root for. A.H.

The star-crossed couple at the center of this familiar object lesson are Emma and Dexter, whose college graduation-night hook-up on July 15, 1988, ends in a platonic cuddle amid vows always to stay friends. “One Day,” which screenwriter David Nicholls adapted from his own novel, then traces the erstwhile couple’s friendship in snapshots captured on succeeding July 15ths, tracing their lives and careers

Colin Farrell steals the show as a suburban bloodsucker in “Fright Night.”

“Fright Night” stands apart from the rehash pack by accomplishing something rival remakes rarely do: It improves on the premise it has been handed, producing a modernized version of a decades-old story that’s superior to its predecessor in virtually every aspect. In this case, “Fright Night” director Craig Gillespie remakes Todd Holland’s 1985 horror comedy of the same name, a dated slice of teenage paranoia that was neither scary nor funny the first time.

The story still steals from Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece “Rear Window” with awkward teenager Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) casting suspicions that his mysterious new neighbor Jerry (Colin Farrell) is a vampire. As Charlie’s accusations fall on deaf ears, the arrogant Jerry engages in a deadly cat-andmouse game that draws in Charlie’s childhood friend (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), his girlfriend (Imogene Poots), and a carnival-barking entertainer named Peter Vincent (David Tennant) who trades in the occult.

“One Day” traces the relationship of Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess.

ing friends-who-should-be-lovers couple, a la Harry and Sally. The conceit of “One Day” — that we see the couple only one day a year, leaving it to them to reveal what’s happened over the past 12 months — works better on the page than the screen, especially when a pivotal encounter occursoff stage. But Nicholls has proved a faithful shepherd to his fictional creations, who banter and rant at each other with the practiced elan of the aging couple they’re clearly meant to be. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

At its best, “Fright Night” mixes sly pop-culture references, “Twilight” jabs and Scooby gang jokes with suspenseful horror sequences sure to unnerve even the most-seasoned genre fans. Though Gillespie staked his claim with the offbeat “Lars and the Real Girl,” he deftly maneuvers this film’s action sequences, the most memorable involving a minivan, a motorbike, a demonic hand and a real estate sign with a sharp point on the end. All of this, however, takes a backseat to Farrell, who appears to be having a ball as Jerry, the bored bloodsucker. Like a fat cat batting around an injured mouse, Farrell plays off his innate sexuality and unforced charm to intimidate co-stars who appear less confident. Which, in a word, is everyone. THE CHANGE-UP (R, 113 minutes) “Freaky Friday” meets “The Hangover” in “The Change-Up,” a raunchy ode to guy-love in which Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds struggle valiantly to transcend the movie they’re in. As an arrested adolescent and incorrigible ladies’ man named Mitch, Reynolds has most of the funniest lines in “The Change-Up,” many of them vulgarities aimed at infants who smile beatifically at the verbal abuse. Bateman doesn’t get to have nearly as much fun as Mitch’s straight-laced bestie Dave, a type-A lawyer with a beautiful wife (Leslie Mann) and three kids. A.H. CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (PG-13, 118 minutes) “Crazy, Stupid, Love” opens with a clever montage of couples’ feet engaging in all manner of furtive flirtation under restaurant tables. When the camera lands on Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) and his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), their troubles are clear. She’s wearing comehither heels while Cal is decked out in schlumpy New Balance sneakers. She’s still trying, but Cal has given up, which accounts for why Emily announces at that same restaurant that she wants a divorce. He numbly agrees, moves out of their comfortable house and into a depressing bachelor pad and begins hitting a singles bar, where he comes under the tutelage of serial seducer Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), a playah Pygmalion who takes Cal on as a personal makeover project. of these, “Final Destination 5,” isn’t as novel as it hopes to be, but it gets the job done. Here, the villain is fate itself, a sense that the entire physical world is loaded with inevitable death for those who somehow evade the Reaper the first time he comes calling. The camera in “FD5” treats inanimate objects — malfunctioning air conditioners, say — as killers whose mindlessness only makes them more unstoppable. While viewers will get plenty of nervous giggles out of watching as burping water-coolers or (yes!) inappropriately ringing cell phones trigger fatal mishaps, the filmmakers don’t milk the this-leads-to-that element that made Rube Goldberg famous. Once the initial trigger happens, there’s not a lot of fun left in the scene. JOHN DEFORE FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (R, 108 minutes) Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake fairly set the screen on fire as cynics who agree to use each other for physical gratification but otherwise remain steadfastly un-love-struck. Kunis’ character is harddriving media headhunter named Jamie, a savvy consumer of romantic comedy cliches, who is nonetheless powerless to resist their happily-ever-after promises.

Jesse Eisenberg, left, and Aziz Ansari, right, are criminals in “30 Minutes or Less.” After Jamie persuades Timberlake’s Dylan to move to New York to become art director at GQ, the two become best buds, deciding one drunken evening to step up their game. Kunis possesses particular zing as a tart, unsentimental romantic heroine. But if Kunis gets the showier role, Timberlake proves a quietly charming

stalking horse, finally claiming and fully owning the spotlight with a hilarious homage to the 1990s rap duo Kriss Kross. A.H GLEE: THE 3D CONCERT MOVIE (PG, 100 minutes) ”Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” is a multi-dimensional “Glee”a-thon that contains highlights from a Continued on page 32

at New Jersey’s Meadowlands during this summer’s “Glee” tour. Filled with infectiously energetic renditions of pop tunes plucked straight from the repertoires of the show’s competitive crooning groups,

the New Directions and the Warblers — from Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ “ to Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” — the movie is entertaining and, admittedly, completely unnecessary. Hard-core “Glee” fans will undoubtedly give it two thumbs up, as it delivers the key things they desire from a “Glee” movie: a chance to watch their favorite cast members (Kurt! Santana! Brittany!) perform “Born This Way” on

a much larger screen, and to get even closer to this season’s breakout heartthrob, Darren Criss, courtesy of 3-D technology. JEN CHANEY THE HELP (PG-13, 137 minutes) Fans of Kathryn Stockett’s folksy, ingratiating novel of the same name can rest easy: The director, Tate Taylor — a childhood friend of the author, who, like her, grew up in Jackson, Miss., where the story is

set — has preserved the book’s story line, characters and confiding tone with loyalty worthy of any best friend. Readers who felt they came to intimately know characters such as Celia (Jessica Chastain) and Skeeter (Emma Stone) are likely to greet their alter egos on screen like cherished, long-lost friends — especially the nobly suffering Aibileen, here brought to quietly watchful life by Viola

a hyper-intelligent chimp named Caesar (Andy Serkis, in motion-capture CGI) to the role of leader of an ape underground, after suffering abuse at the hands of a sadistic handler at a primate shelter (Tom Felton). Caesar and his simian followers are both relatable and scary as heck. Now for the bad news. The filmmakers seem to have spent so much attention and, presumably, money on getting the primates

right that they completely forgot about the people. Led by a mumble-mouthed James Franco the cast of human actors is uniformly weak. M.O. THE SMURFS (PG, 102 minutes) Raja Gosnell relies on cutting-edge CGI and unnecessary 3-D wizardry to transport the pint-size heroes of the ’80s to noisy New York City. Once here, the Smurfs interact with incredulous humans,

“The Helpis an exhilarating gift.” Peter Travers,

impart a little homespun wisdom and help make our grungy existence a tad more animated. A paper-thin plot finds six Smurfs sucked through a magical vortex and dropped into Central Park. Hot on the Smurfs’ blue trail is evil sorcerer Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and his feisty cat, Azrael. Luckily, the Smurfs take shelter with gentle Grace (“Glee” star Jayma Mays) and her workaholic

husband, Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris), who both need to be reminded that life moves pretty fast, and if you don’t stop to smurf the roses every now and again, you just might miss the special moments. A.H. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (PG-13, 110 minutes) First, the good news. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the muchanticipated prequel to the sci-fi movie franchise of the late ’60s and early ’70s about a world ruled by apes, gets one thing exactly right. The apes, which we see on the cusp of world domination, are both terrifying and sympathetic. That’s not an easy trick. Yet it’s critical to this origin story, which charts the ascent of

Don’t Use Your Hands Quick tutorial for non-soccer fans (hi, Americans!): “The Beautiful Game” is what everyone else calls soccer. It’s also the name of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical about Irish soccer hooligans, and as much as we’d like to see people singing while playing dance-soccer, it’s probably for the best that the screening of “The Beautiful Game” at the National Museum of African Art this weekend is just a 2011 documentary with the same title. But also about soccer. National Museum of African Art, 950 Independence Ave. SW; Sat., 1 p.m., free; 202-633-4600, Africa.si.edu. (Smithsonian)

From 1989 to 1996, HBO’s “Tales From the Crypt” meted out graphically violent justice to the greedy and prideful. In what is surely a shrewd comment on the debt ceiling debate, the Black Cat has pledged to screen two episodes of the series every Friday. The first-ever episode, “The Man Who Was Death,” tackles unemployment (an executioner goes freelance after the death penalty is abolished). There will be drink specials with which to wash down the dramatic irony. Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW; Fridays starting Aug. 19, 7 p.m.8:30 p.m.; 202-667-4490, Blackcatdc. com. (U St.-Cardozo)

Signature’s been supplementing its summer season with cabarets from various regular performers, but this weekend’s, from Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, is special — the two are singers, but they’re also the composing team responsible for “Taylor, the Latte Boy,” a song about the universally relatable experience of lusting after a barista at Starbucks. Signature Theatre, 4200 Campbell Ave., Arlington; through Sat., $34; 703-820-9771, Signaturetheatre.org.

News flash: There’s a reality show on Animal Planet that has nothing to do with animals. Or nearly nothing. Time was, Animal Planet could create a reality show starring only animals. “Meerkat Manor” took the people-free soap opera idea to its logical limit. Now, with “Tanked” (9 p.m. and 10 p.m.), Animal Planet goes in the opposite direction. While it’s supposed to be about big and big-hearted blue-collar guys who build exotic aquariums for Las Vegas casinos and wealthy residents, it’s really about New Yorkers stranded in America’s gambling mecca. Brett Raymer and Wayde King are brothers-in-law and partners in Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (ATM), one of the country’s lead<H?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may discover that you’re not quite as prepared to launch into the new phase of a project as you had thought, but you can fake it. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Any attempt to outperform or overshadow another is likely to backfire on you. Be sure that your motives are pure at all times. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You must find a way to keep your schedule straight at this time, as things are likely to heat up and you’ll be much busier than usual. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You will be able to increase enjoyment and profit, if you take advantage of an opportunity that few others will even notice.

Yesterday’s Solution

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Things may not progress in a way that makes sense to you, but if you approach them one at a time, you should fare quite well. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’ve reached the halfway point, and it’s time to look back and assess your own performance. Be honest; don’t deceive yourself in any way. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re trying to do something others have been unable to do, and though you’re nearing the finish line, a difficulty may arise. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may have a hard time reading someone else, but once you begin interacting directly, the mystery should evaporate.
