Highly logical: ‘The Little Prince’ has been translated into Klingon
German leaders are chill over risk of intruders from outer space
These moms-to-be all know the way to the maternity ward
The classic 1943 children’s book “The Little Prince” — about a young visitor from outer space — has been translated into hundreds of languages. Now it has also been translated into Klingon, the unique language of the fictitious characters of “Star Trek,” the German Press Agency reported Saturday. “Star Trek” language expert Lieven L. Litaer did the translation. He estimates that only 20 to 30 people speak fluent Klingon. (EXPRESS)
The German government says it has made no preparations for the possibility that outer-space aliens might land in the country. In a response to questions from opposition Green Party lawmaker Dieter Janecek, the government said “there are no protocols or plans for a possible first contact with alien life.” Officials said they believe “a first contact on German territory is extremely unlikely, based on today’s scientific knowledge.” (AP)

Network: Bar isn’t schwifty
KARLIN VILLONDO PHOTOGRAPHY
THE DISTRICT The Wubba Dubba Lub Pub, a “Rick and Morty”-themed popup bar from the creators of the popular “Game of Thrones” and holiday bars in Shaw, was supposed to have its grand opening on Friday night. Instead, the bar was shut down before it even opened after Turner Broadcasting announced its intention to seek an emergency hearing in U.S. District Court, claiming the pop-up bar violated its intellectual property. Adult Swim, which shows “Rick and Morty” on Cartoon Network, issued a statement Saturday morning, saying that Adult Swim was not approached in advance of Drink Company announcing and building its “Rick and Morty”-themed bar. The statement said that Adult Swim felt it “couldn’t be sure that the experience was going to be up to our standards for [‘Rick and Morty’] fans.” Derek Brown, the president of Drink Company, which puts on the rotating pop-ups, said his

company had been in talks with Turner and Cartoon Network in recent weeks about permission to use the “Rick and Morty” characters. “We believed we had a deal, and they essentially backed out of it,” he said. John Mason, an intellectual property attorney who represents
Drink Company, said the bar had “agreed to a variety of things,” including a request to delay the opening. Mason emailed a “settlement in principle” to Turner’s attorneys on Aug. 8. The following Monday, Mason said, he received a new counteroffer: “a six-figure licensing fee”

to use the characters, which hadn’t previously been mentioned. “Let’s be honest: It was intended to shut us down,” Brown said. Mason argued that the bar is fair use. “This isn’t displacing opportunity in the marketplace for Turner, and people weren’t going to think, ‘Oh, Cartoon Network is starting a pop-up bar,’ ” he said. Some of Drink Company’s previous pop-up bars have been inspired by trademarked property, such as HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” but the bar had been able to come to agreements with license holders. At the “Game of Thrones” pub, for example, Brown said the bar agreed not to host Sunday night viewing parties. Brown said Drink Company will have to lay off staff and probably have to destroy all the art and fixtures made for the Wubba Dubba Lub Pub. But it won’t change how they operate pop-ups going forward, Brown said. “We only make bars full of things we love. We hope in the future to support the fans, as fans ourselves, find partners who appreciate what we do and create amazing, fun bars.” FRITZ HAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Md.’s crab industry in crisis Without enough visas for Mexican laborers, picking jobs go unfilled
99 expressline
Bowser steps into spotlight in Trump feud MICHAEL S. WILLIAMSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
FISHING CREEK, MD. The boat pulled up to the wooden dock, carrying blue crabs and menhaden fish and six men in waders speckled with scales and salt from the Chesapeake Bay. Normally, the crabs would be steamed and hauled through double doors to a long, fluorescent-lit room, where dozens of employees at Russell Hall Seafood would extract the meat. But on this day, the steel tables inside sat empty. “There’s nothing going on at all,” said owner Harry Phillips, “ ’cause we haven’t got our pickers.” Changes to a foreign-worker visa program have left businesses like Russell Hall without the seasonal laborers — mostly from Mexico — who help drive Maryland’s signature industry. About a third of picking jobs remain unfilled across the Eastern Shore this summer, as few Americans have responded to openings and Mexican laborers are stranded at home without permission to come here to work. The situation illustrates a general unwillingness among U.S. workers to perform certain kinds of labor, some of the business owners here in Dorchester County say. It also demonstrates how President Trump’s “America First” policies have not necessarily helped those workers or small-business owners but instead have dealt them a new economic reality.
Crab pickers at Lindy’s Seafood have been getting better pay and working longer to make up for a picker shortage.
Crab-picking houses are boosting wages and expanding overtime but are losing customers — and profits — because they can’t provide a reliable supply of crabmeat. One local supplier buys meat elsewhere to serve at its restaurant because the inhouse picking plant has none. And at Russell Hall, Phillips is weighing whether to pack up and move his operation to Mexico. “What future’s gonna be here if we don’t know if we’re gonna get our workers?” Phillips said. “Our girls are right in Mexico, and they have crabs just like we have.” Since he took charge of the family business in 1992, Phillips has hired 50 Mexican workers a year through the H-2B visa program to work summer through fall. But changes to the program
“They feel like the status of the job is not where they’d like to be. It’s considered dirty work.” AUBREY VINCENT, of Lindy’s Seafood, on the difficulty of finding American workers to pick crabmeat
shut him out this year. The Trump administration said this past winter it would distribute the temporary visas through a lottery — not the first-come, first-served system previously in place. In addition, Congress dropped a rule in 2017 that said workers who had gotten visas in the past could get them
again without counting toward the annual cap. “It’s just ridiculous,” said Phillips, who failed to secure any visas when the first 33,000 were allocated in February or when an additional 15,000 were issued in June. “I’m not a gambler. I want to know I got my crew.” A 10-minute drive away, Aubrey Vincent faces similar woes. While she was able to secure about 40 of the 104 visas she requested at her family’s picking house, Lindy’s Seafood, the shortage means she can’t run the business as she did last summer. “What it’s really done is eliminate the efficiency,” Vincent said. “Everybody’s working so many hours, they’re exhausted, but at the same time I don’t have enough hands to get all the work done.” TEO ARMUS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Equipment failure, electric-feed disruption caused power outage last week at Reagan National
THE DISTRICT D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser didn’t wake up Friday expecting to trade body blows on Twitter with the president. Then the phone rang. “I was feeding my baby,” Bowser said. “I got a call that I had made it to Donald Trump’s — or the city had made it to Donald Trump’s — Twitter feed.” Just before 8 a.m., the president had taken a shot at D.C.’s “local politicians,” blaming them for running up security costs and forcing the cancellation of a military parade. Within the hour, Bowser fired back — and, with one deftly composed tweet, became a star in the national social media arena frequented by Trump critics. “Yup, I’m Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington DC, the local politician who finally got thru to the reality star in the White House with the realities ($21.6M) of parades/events/ demonstrations in Trump America (sad),” she wrote. It was a rare show of adversarial flair by a mayor whose even-keeled approach to the many provocations the Trump administration has directed toward Washington and other big cities has not always been welcomed by some of her constituents. Bowser insisted she had not stepped out of character by challenging the president, but “thought it was important to make sure that the facts were out there” about the parade’s costs. “I don’t want to be a Twitter celebrity,” she said. Three Virginia high schools are canceling varsity football programs, citing a lack of interest. Charles City is canceling its entire program and other schools are canceling varsity schedules. Park View High School in Sterling canceled its varsity schedule after only 18 players reported for tryouts. Manassas Park High School Principal Pamela Kalso told parents last week that they’ll play a junior varsity schedule after practices routinely drew only 15 players. The Virginia High School League recommends against playing varsity football with fewer than 25 students. The declines come amid concerns about injuries and rising costs. (AP)
Authorities said they have in custody a man they say carjacked a black Infiniti later used in the July 16 shooting of 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson, who was killed outside her home in Southeast D.C. The carjacking occurred in Prince George’s County two weeks before the shooting in Clay Terrace. Police charged Kevin Eugene Jones, 21, with armed carjacking, two counts of assault and a firearms violation. Jones has not been identified as a suspect in Makiyah’s shooting, according to two police officials familiar with the case. Police were searching for four gunmen.
A private school in Annapolis has launched an investigation into allegations that a culture of sexual abuse existed in the 1970s with administrators’ knowledge. Two Baltimore lawyers are leading the investigation into allegations at the Key School. Matthew Nespole, the current head of the school, said a February review of allegations indicated former Key officials failed to protect students. Police said they haven’t received reports of any recent inappropriate conduct at the school. Multiple former students said they were groomed and sexually abused by teachers in the 1970s. (AP/TWP)

Volunteers rescue stranded people Sunday in Chengannur in India’s Kerala state.

800K displaced in flooding More than 350 perish from extreme rainfall in India’s Kerala state CHENGANNUR, INDIA Some 800,000 people have been displaced and over 350 have died in the worst flooding in a century in southern India’s Kerala state, officials said Sunday, as rescuers searched for people stranded in the worst-affected areas. The downpours that started Aug. 8 have triggered floods and landslides and caused homes and bridges to collapse across Kerala, a picturesque state known for its quiet tropical backwaters and beautiful beaches. Thousands of rescuers were continuing efforts to reach out to stranded people and get relief supplies to isolated areas

using hundreds of boats and nearly two dozen helicopters, said P.H. Kurian, a top disaster management official in Kerala. He said weather conditions had improved considerably and expected the nearly 10,000 people still stranded to be rescued by today. An estimated 800,000 people have taken shelter in some 4,000 relief camps across Kerala, Kurian said. Weather officials predicted more rains across the state through this morning. In several villages in the suburbs of Chengannur, one of the worst-affected areas, carcasses of dead cattle were seen floating in muddy waters as water began receding. However, vast rice fields continued to be flooded and many vehicles were submerged.
In some villages, floodwaters up to 10 feet high had entered homes. Officials have called it the worst flooding in Kerala in a century, with rainfall in some areas well over double that of a typical monsoon season. At least two trains carrying about 400,000 gallons of water moved to the flooded areas from the neighboring states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra on Sunday, Indian railway official Milind Deouskar said, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. After one of the trains arrived, Kurian, the disaster management official, said authorities had largely restored the state’s water supply systems. “What we need right now is bottled water, which is easy to transport to remote and isolated places, where some people are
still stranded,” Kurian said. Officials estimate that more than 6,200 miles of roads have been damaged. One of the state’s major airports, in the city of Kochi, was closed this past Tuesday due to the flooding. It is scheduled to remain closed until Aug. 26. The Indian government said a naval air base in Kochi would be opened for commercial flights starting today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspected the flooded landscape from a helicopter Saturday and met with the state’s top officials, promising more than $70 million in aid. While the government has dispatched multiple military units to Kerala, state officials are pleading for additional help. Officials have put initial storm damage estimates at nearly $3 billion. The audit, which a newspaper published Sunday, said a third of France’s 12,000 government-maintained bridges need repairs, with about 7 percent, or 840, at “risk of collapse.” The audit didn’t cover bridges run by local authorities or private companies. Oil conservation loses favor Trump administration memo turns U.S. back toward consumption
ICE arrests man driving his wife to deliver baby
DAVID MCNEW (GETTY IMAGES)
ENVIRONMENT Conserving oil is no longer an economic imperative for the U.S., the Trump administration declared in a major new policy statement that threatens to undermine decades of government campaigns for gas-thrifty cars and other conservation programs. The position was outlined in a memo released last month in support of the administration’s proposal to relax fuel mileage standards. The government released the memo online this month without fanfare. Growth of natural gas and other alternatives to petroleum has reduced the need for imported oil, which “in turn affects the need of the nation to conserve energy,” the Energy Department said. It also cites the now decadeold fracking revolution that has unlocked U.S. shale oil reserves, giving “the United States more flexibility than in the past to use our oil resources with less concern.” With the memo, the administration is formally challenging old justifications for conservation — even congressionally prescribed ones, as with the mileage standards. The memo made no mention of climate change. Transportation is the single largest source of climatechanging emissions.
A new Trump administration proposal suggests the U.S. no longer needs to conserve its petroleum resources.
Despite the increased oil supplies, the administration continues to believe in the need to “use energy wisely,” the Energy Department said, without elaboration. Reaction was quick. “It’s like saying, ‘I’m a big, old, fat guy, and food prices have dropped — it’s time to start eating again,’” said Tom Kloza, a longtime oil analyst with the Maryland-based Oil Price Information Service. Climate change is a “clear and present and increasing danger,” said Sean Donahue, a lawyer for the Environmental Defense Fund. In a big way, the Energy Department statement just acknowledges
the world’s vastly changed reality when it comes to oil. Just 10 years ago, in summer 2008, oil prices were peaking at $147 a barrel and pummeling the global economy. Prices now are about $65. Today, the U.S. is vying with Russia for the title of top world oil producer. U.S. oil production hit an all-time high this summer, aided by the technological leaps of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Current administration proposals include one that would freeze mileage standards for cars and light trucks after 2020, instead of making them tougher. The proposal eventually would increase U.S. oil consumption by 500,000 barrels a day, the
administration says. While Trump officials say the freeze would improve highway safety, senior Environmental Protection Agency staffers calculate the administration’s move would actually increase highway deaths. Oil and gas interests are campaigning for changes in government conservation efforts on mileage standards, biofuels and electric cars. In June, for instance, the American Petroleum Institute and other industries wrote eight governors, promoting the dominance of the internal-combustion engine and questioning their states’ incentives to consumers for electric cars. IMMIGRATION A California woman said Saturday that she had to drive herself to the hospital and give birth without her husband after he was detained by immigration agents. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said the man was detained because he is wanted on an arrest warrant in a homicide case in Mexico. Maria del Carmen Venegas said she and her husband, Joel Arrona Lara, were driving to the hospital Wednesday when they stopped for gas in San Bernardino. Surveillance footage shows two vehicles immediately flank the couple’s van. Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement questioned the couple and asked for identification, Venegas said. The surveillance footage shows the agents handcuffing Arrona, 35, and taking him away, leaving a sobbing Venegas alone. Venegas, 32, said she drove herself to the hospital for a scheduled cesarean section for the birth of her fifth child. “I feel terrible,” Venegas said in an interview from the hospital as her newborn son, Damian, cried in the background. “We need him now more than ever.” The couple do not have legal authorization to live in the U.S., but all five of their children are U.S. citizens, Venegas said. ICE said agents with the agency’s Fugitive Operations Team said Arrona remained in custody pending removal proceedings. AMANDA LEE MYERS (AP)

nation+world More women than ever won primaries in races for governor, Congress POLITICS Women are not just running for office in record numbers this year — they are winning. More women than ever before have won major party primaries for governor, U.S. Senate and House this year — setting a U.S. record and paving the way for November battles that could significantly increase the number of women in elected office. Most of these female hopefuls are Democrats, some of whom are first-time candidates who say their motivation to run sprang from President Trump’s
election and Republican control of Congress. Some 200 women have won their primaries for U.S. House. Previously, the highest number of women to advance was 167 in 2016, according to records kept by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. In the Senate, a record 19 women have won their primaries. And for the first time, 13 women have been nominated for gubernatorial races in a single election year. Success in November would go a long way to improving the nation’s dismal record of female representation. Currently, women account for just a fifth of 535 U.S. representatives and senators, and one in four state

John Cornyn, R-Texas, had no interest in talking about it. “I’ve got more important things on my mind, so I really don’t have a comment on that,” said the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, chuckling at the question. What about his constituents back home — are they concerned? “I know you have to ask these questions but I’m not going to talk about that,” Cornyn said, politely ending the brief interview in the basement of the U.S. Capitol. “I just think that’s an endless little wild goose chase and I’m not going there.” And so it went last week among Republicans: As Trump immersed the nation in a new wave of fraught battles over race, most GOP lawmakers tried to ignore the topic altogether. The studied avoidance is a reflection of the enduring reluctance of Republicans to confront Trump’s often divisive rhetoric, in part because the president remains deeply popular within a party dominated by older white voters. The Washington Post reached out to all 51 Republican senators and six House Republican leaders, asking them to participate in a brief interview about Trump and race. Only three senators agreed to participate, including Trump critic Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. “It started long before his campaign, the whole Barack Obama, the birtherism. … That was abhorrent, I thought,” Flake said, rattling off examples when asked if there were times he felt Trump had been racially insensitive. “And then you know, the Mexican rapists … on his first

As Trump hurls racially charged invective, most Republicans avoid weighing in
A few GOP lawmakers talk about Trump and race While most Republicans declined a Washington Post interview request to discuss President Trump and race, here’s what a few had to say. (TWP)
Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn.: “It’s a formula that I think they think works for them, as it relates to winning,” the Trump critic said, referring to the use of divisive racial issues by Trump and his advisers. “I think that’s their kind of governing. I think that’s how they think they stay in power, is to divide.”
Sen. John Thune, R-S.D.: Calling former black adviser Omarosa Manigault Newman a “dog” was “not appropriate, ever,” he said. But he stopped short of pointing to a time when he felt Trump had crossed a racial boundary. “I just think that’s the way he reacts and the way he interacts with people who attack him.”
official day as a campaign. And then you know, Judge Curiel, the statement that he couldn’t judge because of his heritage. Failure to, you know, condemn in Charlottesville. Just the willingness to go there, all the time. Muslim ban. This kind of divide-and-conquer
Sen. David Perdue R-Ga.: He said he believes Trump is results-focused and “trying to be all-inclusive,” and that Democrats are the ones using race as a political issue. “I have many friends in the African-American community and they’re tired of being treated as pawns,” he said.
strategy. It’s just — it’s been one thing after another.” Six other lawmakers granted impromptu interviews when approached in the Capitol, although most declined to be specific about whether they were uncomfortable with any of Trump’s
Death of Romanian trucker raises death toll to 43 in Genoa, Italy, bridge collapse
statements on race. Several other lawmakers said they did not like some of Trump’s language, especially on race, but did not consider Trump to be racist. The month of August has seen Trump unleash a steady tide of racially charged invective, including questioning the intelligence of NBA star LeBron James, attacking Chinese college students and reviving his attacks on anthem protests by black NFL players. Republicans have struggled over issues of race since the civil rights era, with periodic efforts to appeal to blacks, Latinos and other minorities. Following Mitt Romney’s loss in 2012 to President Barack Obama, the party produced an autopsy report arguing that the party would need to make inroads among minority voters to survive changing demographics. Trump has largely upended all of that, however, riding to electoral victory by focusing almost exclusively on disaffected white voters. Dianne Pinderhughes, a University of Notre Dame professor who focuses on race and politics, said the president’s handling of race is also part of a recurring historical trend: Republicans subtly and not-so-subtly reassure white Americans that their status in the country remains intact amid a fast-changing culture. “He’s trying to convince white people that the way to keep their long-term status is to keep out people of color, keep out immigrants, and keep blacks down, and they’ll feel better off by doing so,” Pinderhughes said. “In turn, some white people are excited and responsive. It’s not all whites, but it’s significant enough to be recognized by other Republicans, who decide to stay quiet about it.” ASHLEY PARKER, SEUNG MIN KIM AND ROBERT COSTA (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Truth isn’t truth,’ Giuliani says of probe POLITICS Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s lead attorney in the ongoing Russia probe, said Sunday that he will not allow special counsel Robert Mueller to rush Trump into an interview because investigators could try to catch the president in a lie based on their version of the facts. “I am not going to be rushed into having him testify so that he gets trapped into perjury,” Giuliani said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Giuliani’s exchange with host Chuck Todd produced an odd back-and-forth on the meaning of truth in the context of the Russia investigation. “When you tell me that [Trump] should testify because he’s going to tell the truth and he shouldn’t worry, that’s so silly — because it’s somebody’s version of the truth. Not the truth,” Giuliani said. Todd responded, “Truth is truth.” “No, it isn’t truth. Truth isn’t truth,” Giuliani said. The former New York City mayor has previously questioned the objectivity of the investigators in the Russia probe. The “truth is relative,” he said in May. Investigators “may have a different version of the truth than we do.” The two sides have been negotiating the terms for a possible interview with Trump, with the president’s legal team trying to take certain topics, such as possible obstruction of justice, off the table. Nobel peace laureate is remembered for his ‘warmth’ and ‘brilliance’ 1938-2018 Kofi Annan, a charismatic global diplomat and the first black African to become United Nations secretary-general, who led the world body through one of its most turbulent periods, died early Saturday at age 80. Tributes flowed in from around
the world after his foundation announced his death following a short and unspecified illness in the Swiss capital, Bern. The statement remembered the Nobel Peace Prize winner as “radiating genuine kindness, warmth and brilliance in all he did.” He died “peacefully in his sleep,” the president of Ghana, where Annan was born, said after speaking to his wife. elegance and political savvy helped guide his ascent to become its seventh secretary-general, and the first hired from within. His two terms were from Jan. 1, 1997, to Dec. 31, 2006, capped when he and the U.N. were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. When he departed, he left behind a global organization far more engaged in peacekeeping and fighting poverty. “In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations,” current U.N. Nose tackle Daron Payne sacks the Jets’ Sam Darnold on Thursday on Washington’s first defensive series.
Payne’s instant impact Redskins’ top pick impresses with early sack against the Jets in his preseason debut NFL Daron Payne needed all of three snaps to ease fears that he’s a one-trick pony. The massive nose tackle, Washington’s top draft pick in April, made his preseason debut Thursday and recorded his first sack before the visiting Jets could manage a first down in a 15-13 win for the Redskins. “It’s crazy to see a guy like Payne who’s that physical in the run but also can get up there and pass rush,” Redskins linebacker Mason Foster said. “... It’s one thing to do it in practice. And then to take it onto the field — and be dominant and explosive like that at the size he is — is crazy.” Payne, the No. 13 overall pick out of Alabama, came off the ball with two quick steps toward
the outside and got Jets guard Jonotthan Harrison to lean in that direction. Payne then cut back inside with a swim move that opened a clear path to quarterback Sam Darnold as Harrison fell face-first to the turf. For those worried that Payne (6-foot-3, 319 pounds) was just a bull-rushing strongman who would stuff the run but fail to produce in the pass rush, that snap showed otherwise. “He was ready to go,” fellow rookie defensive tackle Tim Settle said. “I was hyping him up a bit before the game, and he said, ‘You going to see,’ and he showed me.” Payne’s debut — he missed the preseason opener with an ankle injury he suffered in training camp — finally let the Redskins’
RBs visit Redskins Park After losing rookie Derrius Guice to a torn ACL in the first preseason game and watching Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall suffer ankle injuries Thursday against the Jets, the Redskins need running backs. The team hosted Orleans Darkwa — the Giants’ leading rusher last year — for a workout Sunday, coach Jay Grudne confirmed. Jamaal Charles, who played for Denver last year, visited for an interview. Former Vikings great Adrian Peterson, 33, will reportedly visit today. (EXPRESS)
revamped defensive line resemble the unit they expect to start in the Sept. 9 opener at Arizona. Payne will pair with former
college teammate Jonathan Allen (who also missed the preseason opener), with Settle rotating in. The line was missing Matt Ioannidis because of a knee injury suffered in the preseason opener, but the unit still looked good Thursday. The Jets managed just 64 yards on 22 carries, a 2.9-yard average. Washington had the worst-ranked run defense in the league last season. Allen, a first-round pick last season, posted three tackles Thursday — including one for a loss — in his first game since going on injured reserve after five games as a rookie. Settle, a fifth-round pick this year, had a tackle, knocked down a pass at the line and looked tough to block.

How coach might exit A high-level booster told The Washington Post it’s “impossible” that Maryland football coach DJ Durkin will retain his job after lineman Jordan McNair’s death. Here are three ways Durkin could leave. (TWP)
3 Get fired for cause If Durkin is found to have breached the duties outlined in his contract, he could be fired without severance. An external probe into the team culture could lead this way.
2 Get fired without cause If the university fires Durkin with no legal justification, it owes him 65 percent of his remaining salary. That adds up to about $5.8 million on a deal that runs through 2021.
1 Accept a settlement There’s a chance Durkin could make a deal to resign. Strength coach Rick Court went this route for a sum of $315,000, two-thirds of what was left on his deal.

Strasburg to return against Phillies
Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg will come off the disabled list Wednesday to pitch the second game of a three-game homestand against the Phillies, manager Dave Martinez announced Sunday. Strasburg, 30, hasn’t pitched since July 20, his lone start in the past nine weeks. He spent six weeks on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, then returned to the DL after one outing because of a nerve impingement in his neck. MARLINS 12, NATIONALS 1 | Nats starter Gio Gonzalez hands the ball to manager Dave Martinez after allowing eight runs on 10 hits and four walks in 4⅔ innings Sunday against last-place Miami. The loss left Washington (62-63) seven games behind, pending the Phils’ late game.

LeMahieu, Marquez help Colorado complete sweep
Bills QB McCarron seeks second opinion on shoulder
Bengals cut starter Iloka, clear way for rookie safety
German Marquez and DJ LeMahieu added to impressive road numbers, leading Colorado to a 4-2 win Sunday to help the Rockies claim a four-game sweep in Atlanta for the first time. LeMahieu gave Colorado the lead with a third-inning homer a day after hitting a 10th-inning shot in a 5-3 win. Marquez (11-9) won his fourth straight road decision. He allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in seven innings. Battling Arizona for the NL West lead, the Rockies finished a 5-1 road trip. With the loss, the Braves (68-55) fell into a tie atop the NL East with the Phillies, whose game against the Mets ended after Express’ deadline Sunday. (AP)
Bills quarterback AJ McCarron is getting a second opinion on an injury to his throwing shoulder, coach Sean McDermott said Sunday. McCarron reportedly suffered a hairline fracture in his collarbone Friday in a 19-17 preseason win at Cleveland. Defensive tackle Kyle Williams was also hurt, suffering a knee injury that may force him to miss the start of the regular season. McCarron’s injury opens the door for first-round pick Josh Allen or backup Nathan Peterman. After replacing McCarron, Allen went 9-of-13 for 60 yards, throwing a touchdown pass and leading two drives that ended in field goals. (AP)
Cincinnati on Sunday released safety George Iloka, clearing a path for rookie Jessie Bates III to move into a starting role. Iloka, 28, was sharing playing time in preseason games with Bates, a second-round pick out of Wake Forest. Iloka made 76 starts for the Bengals in the last six seasons. He had nine career interceptions, but only one last season. A day before Iloka was cut, the Bengals beat the host Cowboys 21-13. Iloka tweeted after the move: “Thankful for the opportunity Cincinnati. To my former teammates, best of luck and stay healthy, you guys have something special brewing there.” (AP)

“Disenchantment” follows a princess, an elf and a demon who fall into all sorts of shenanigans.
MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1 ‘The Innocents’ Friday on Netflix
A fantasy to indulge in Overcoming a sluggish start, Netflix’s ‘Disenchantment’ makes for a magical ride TV REVIEW “Disenchantment” has a taste for drinking, featuring as it does a carousing 19-year-old princess who binges on midnight mead and ale the way an eager Netflix subscriber might binge-watch these fresh episodes. In the case of this animated comedy, viewers would be wise to indulge in some binge-thinking, because “Disenchantment” takes a while to get up to a steady clip. Clearly, creator Matt Groening and collaborator/showrunner Josh Weinstein (a veteran of Groening’s “The Simpsons” and “Futurama”) start out rendering the character-development outlines more heavily than the punchlines. That tactic should prove wise in the long run, but
be forewarned: It’s not till the fifth episode that you really see the show’s elements all start to jell, as the writers, unshackled from heavy exposition, get as adventurous as their star princess. And it is on the solid shoulders of Princess “Bean” Tiabeanie that much of “Disenchantment’s” early appeal rests. Bean, a young royal betrothed multiple times by her alliance-seeking father (winningly voiced by “Broad City’s” Abbi Jacobson), has shades of many freedom-seeking princesses. As an animated royal rebel — albeit one who likes to drop medieval Molly or doff her top on occasion in defiance — Bean is trying to change her fate like some PG-13 Merida from Pixar’s “Brave.”
$34M
Three’s a company Rounding out Princess Bean’s core of adventurers are Elfo, a Keebleresque refugee who, as voiced by Nat Faxon, plays a bit like “Frozen’s” Olaf but with more heated desires on his mind, and Luci (Eric Andre), Bean’s personal demon, who gives shadowy side-eye. This trio carries much of the narrative payload, often delivering the wittiest payoffs. M.C.
The creative choices by Groening and Weinstein mean that “Disenchantment” is not aiming to play like some mere sendup of “Game of Thrones,” “The Lord of the Rings” or a decades-long line of Disney princesses. No matter the cobblestone path forward,
“Disenchantment” has carved out a promising foundation for a wide array of satisfying stories that could carry the series through a healthy run. It’s not realistic to expect a culture-shifting achievement from “Disenchantment.” What Groening and Weinstein are gifting us with is an engaging and occasionally shaggy series that could easily prove addictive. For frothy enjoyment, just be prepared to kick back like a beer-swilling princess who is evolving — to the point that hope, as a surprising new emotion, is a feeling she doesn’t “want to drink away.” “Disenchantment” isn’t revolutionary. But it is winningly evolutionary. MICHAEL CAVNA

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE
For kids of all ages: Let your inner child embrace ‘Esme & Roy’ There’s nothing like a good children’s TV show to take the edge off adult life. Any parent who has sneakwatched kids’ shows when the kids aren’t around knows what I mean. It’s a great escape from harsh grown-up realities to stroll down “Sesame Street” (special shoutout to its awesome “Stranger Things” spoof last fall) or chill with “Arthur” (where anthropomorphic aardvarks and other animals are deeply, wonderfully human) or tune in to the manic energy of “DuckTales” (which now has Lin-Manuel Miranda voicing a recurring character).
This past weekend, HBO launched the first new series from the Sesame Workshop folks in more than a decade: “Esme & Roy,” a half-hour animated show (9:30 a.m. on Saturdays) about a little girl and her monster pal. The premise is that they’re “monster sitters” — taking care of challenging child monsters. It’s not exactly groundbreaking TV, but it is a lot of fun. Esme is a calm and clever human. Roy is a furry, horned monster, and a quipster: “It’s like I always say — breakfast is the most important meal before lunch.” Even though humans and monsters aren’t exactly the same, Esme and Roy get along
famously. In each episode, the pair gets new baby-sitting clients — like Simon, the incredibly finicky eater. All he wants for lunch is his favorite fish and stinky cheese sandwich, but the one-eyed family dog ate it first. Then comes the “monster meltdown.” And it’s up to Esme and Roy to restore calm and order. But not by yelling. They come up with fun interventions, like convincing Simon to build a sculpture of veggies and then taste it. Turns out carrots aren’t so bad! The show adds “mindfulness” to the mix, but it’s not too touchy-feely. Esme gives good instructions on overcoming a meltdown. D.C.’s stressed out multitaskers and motorists would benefit: “Take a deep breath, put your hands on your tummy, feel your belly rise and fall, in through your nose and out through your mouth.” I feel better already. Thank you, Esme! Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

@SADMONSTERS, joking about Liam Neeson’s latest role, as a snowplow-driver-turned-skilled-killer in Hans Petter Moland’s upcoming film “Hard Powder.” The role continues a trope that began when the Irish actor starred in the 2008 action film “Taken,” going from ordinary man to hero bent on revenge. @trollprincess asked people to think up new professions for Neeson to pivot from and add a pun-filled title. @TheEmmaDilemma2 came up with: “Liam Neeson will play a bowling alley manager hell-bent on revenge in ‘Gutter Ball.’ ”

“One hundred and twenty six DOLLARS. I predict that Kevin Spacey’s career is officially dead.” @DELICATEFLOWER1, reacting to the box office numbers for “Billionaire Boys Club,” a crime-drama film that features disgraced actor Kevin Spacey. Although Spacey has a small role, distributor Vertical Entertainment released the movie first on video on demand last month. The film opened Friday in only eight theaters, netting just $126, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Since October, multiple people have accused Spacey of sexual assault.
“Perfect outfit for a zombie apocalypse: 1. You can’t get bitten. 2. You’ll have a bed anywhere you go.” @OZZYY_96, joking about the styles in the new Moncler Genius clothing line, a collaboration with British designer Craig Green. The vests, coats, trousers and bags are made from matte nylon and packed with cotton down, and feature exaggerated silhouettes. Images of the clothes sparked a flood of comparisons on Twitter to sleeping bags, the Michelin Man and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in “Ghostbusters.”
