ODENTON, MD. Susan Trial stood in the library lobby, flipping through a binder of other people’s life stories. Each page held an account, a true one, of a life lived on the margins. “I’m a Black, Spanish-speaking, American Muslim,” one read. “I’ve learned to move about in a society that labels me incorrectly nearly every time.” Another account read, “I lived in an integrated neighborhood and attended segregated schools from first grade until I graduated high school.” Saturday’s event at the Anne Arundel County Public Library was an offshoot of the Human Library, a worldwide nonprofit organization where people from the community serve as “books,” sharing their real-life stories and struggles. Today’s titles were wide-ranging: an incest survivor; a woman suffering post-traumatic stress disorder; a gay, transgender Saudi Arabian man; a first-generation Guatemalan immigrant. Posters invited participants to

“unjudge someone.” The Human Library’s exercise is both simple and radical. For 15 minutes, people sit across the table from a stranger, freed from social constraints, and connect. Ask any question. Share any story. Listen. Look each other in the eye. The open slot Trial was given was with Caitlin Smith, a woman who suffers from complex PTSD. Trial was expecting someone who’d survived a natural disaster or served in the military. But when she sat down at the table,

“I’m not just a label. I’m not just one thing. I’m not just autistic. I’m not just gay. I’m a nerd. I really love my dog.” ERN BERG, a “book” in the Human

Library, whose “title” was “Autistic, Gay, but so much more.” Berg, 32, shared with others about how her autism makes her highly sensitive, but isn’t all that defines her.

she realized this was someone who had suffered from parental abuse, like her. As Smith spoke of her childhood and the traumas that had given her PTSD — days of being ignored and underfed, feeling unloved by the people who were supposed to love her most — Trial nodded in recognition. When the librarian informed them their 15 minutes were up, the women embraced. Afterward, Trial sat quietly in the lobby with her husband, dabbing her eyes with a tissue, explaining how caught off guard she’d been. “I was overwhelmed,” Trial said. “I could have spent another hour with her.” The weight of the conversations was evident, as people emerged from the room tearyeyed and sniffling. “I can’t handle any more,” one man confessed. “I feel like I need all day just to process the two conversations I had.” Later in the afternoon, as Smith sat waiting for the next session to begin, Trial went back inside and handed Smith her business card. Maybe these connections didn’t have to be fleeting, she thought. Maybe this could just be the start. TAYLOR TELFORD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

General Assembly will convene to redraw legislative districts VIRGINIA Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, D, is calling the General Assembly into special session on Aug. 30 to redraw legislative districts that a federal court deemed had been racially gerrymandered. A three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia ruled the lines for 11 House of Delegates districts had been drawn with the purpose of concentrating black voters. The 2-to-1 ruling was a victory for Democrats, who hope that new district boundaries will help them retake control of the House for the

first time in nearly two decades. Last year’s elections wiped out a 2-to-1 GOP advantage in the 100seat House, leaving Republicans with a narrow 51-to-49 majority. The court ordered that new legislative boundaries be drawn by Oct. 30 for use in next year’s state elections. “It is in the public interest for the General Assembly to finalize constitutional maps as soon as possible — Virginians deserve that clarity,” Northam wrote in the proclamation he signed Monday to call the legislature back to Richmond. “I am calling a special session so we can focus our collective attention on doing what’s right: working together to draw lines that represent Virginians fairly.”

Va. gov. calls special session

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam called a special session to redraw districts that a court ruled discriminatory.

But Republicans who control the General Assembly have appealed the ruling, and have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to suspend the Oct. 30 deadline, arguing that the lower court erred in finding

the districts to be discriminatory against African-Americans. “We fully intend to continue to pursue both our request for a stay from the Eastern District Court and our appeal to the United States Supreme Court,” House Speaker Kirk Cox, R-Colonial Heights, said in an emailed response to Northam’s action. “Drawing a map that can withstand legal scrutiny is neither a quick nor simple process,” Cox said. The August special session, Cox said, gives Northam and Democratic House leaders a chance to “demonstrate a willingness to engage in a good-faith effort. We look forward to reviewing their proposal.” GREGORY S. SCHNEIDER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

It’s not easy being Zen when Metro’s a mess Even for a practicing Buddhist, transit woes push patience to brink TRANSPORTATION If Metro has any rider who’d seem willing to cut it some slack, it would be Dereck Norville. He’s now a Buddhist, and he tries to have the patience of one. And his mom was a New York City bus driver. Because she was low on the seniority totem pole, Eritsa Jones had to drive weekends and holidays. And because she was a single mom until she married another bus driver, she’d bring Norville and his sister along on her routes through Brooklyn. In the break room of the Jackie Gleason Bus Depot, the family and the other drivers would share the Christmas meal Eritsa had made the night before. “It was just part of the transit culture and it felt like a family,” Norville said. “I grew up with an understanding of how complex it is to keep a city moving.” So it seemed like a sign of the depths of the frustration of Metro riders last week when Norville stood at the Vienna station and said, “I’ve really tried to be patient and forgiving, but I’m at my wits’ end with Metro.” It was Wednesday evening and Norville was leaving his job at an education policy nonprofit. The arrivals board said the next Orange Line train was 15 minutes away,

One disruption after another this summer on Metro has caused even the most forgiving among us to begin to lose faith in the transit agency.

and it was the middle of rush hour. The end of Norville’s patience had actually come the day before, when a crippling kaleidoscope of a commute on the Red, then Yellow and finally the Orange Line took two hours to get him from his home in Silver Spring to work. More precisely, the end came at the Smithsonian station, when his train was offloaded because of a problem with the brakes, and the next train was too full to get on. Metro has been asking for patience as it “rips off a Band-Aid” by doing two disruptive projects at once, both of which Norville is having to navigate — the closure of a portion of the Red Line between Fort Totten and NoMa to repair the crumbling Rhode Island Avenue station, and the replacement of Orange, Silver and

Blue line tracks between McPherson Square and Smithsonian. There was a time, Norville said, when he was more patient. When Metro shut down the entire system for a little more than a day in March 2016, Norville thought, “It’s going to hurt, but it probably has to be done.” But in the past few years, Metro has started to seem like a friend who keeps crashing on your couch because of one calamity or another that you suspect was their own doing. Last year’s cuts in weekend service were yet another blow to the goodwill toward transit fostered over all those childhood Christmases. Norville is now spending $20 each way to Uber to his Buddhist temple near Dupont Circle. It’s hard to be Zen about it. KERY MURAKAMI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Researchers: Don’t flush your lenses

Pope Francis’ 2,000-word letter is the first by a pope addressed to the world’s Catholics on the topic of sexual abuse.

Pope: ‘We showed no care for the little ones’ Ahead of Ireland visit, Francis issues letter on abuse by priests VATICAN CITY Pope Francis said in an unprecedented letter to the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics on Monday that the church has not dealt properly with “crimes” against children and must prevent sexual abuses from being “covered up and perpetuated.” “We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them,” Francis wrote. The 2,000-word letter, the first by a pope addressed to the world’s Catholics on the topic of sexual abuse, amounted to a direct response by Francis to a rekindled

33%

crisis that has engulfed his papacy and eroded the credibility of the Roman Catholic Church. But after years of high-level pledges to end abuse, the letter renews questions about whether Francis will be able to follow through with a more concrete plan to overhaul the Vatican’s handling of sexual offenses. His letter touched off mixed reactions from across the Catholic world, with some noting that Francis did not outline any specific new steps the church should take. But others said Francis is coming to grips with the scale of the crisis and has increasingly described the problems as systemic or cultural, not simply the result of isolated priestly behavior. The letter was issued at a time

when revelations in the U.S. and around the world are roiling the church — and prompting new scrutiny over how the institution’s hierarchy handles abuse cases. A Pennsylvania grand jury report last week documented seven decades of abuse by 300 priests; it detailed cases of children who were allegedly raped, manipulated with alcohol and “brushed aside” by church leaders. Francis will this weekend travel to Ireland, a country scarred by decades of sexual abuse in parishes and in Catholic-run schools. In Dublin, many have demanded that Francis acknowledge the role church leaders played in silencing victims and helping to keep pedophile priests on the job.

If you regularly flush your disposable contact lenses down the toilet or drain, please stop. New research presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society on Sunday found that 20 percent of 139 people in an anonymous survey said they flush their lenses instead of putting them in the trash, Live Science reported. That’s bad news for the environment. The lenses don’t biodegrade easily, researchers found. Instead, they break into tiny pieces at wastewater treatment facilities and can end up in surface water, contributing to the problem of microplastic pollution in the environment. (EXPRESS)

Records detail Pruitt’s rare use of phone booth POLITICS The $43,000 phone booth that then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt installed in his office may not have been worth all the headaches it caused him. He placed only one phone call to the White House, newly released records from the agency show. It lasted five minutes. The head of the Environmental Protection Agency resigned last month after coming under fire for how he spent tax dollars and treated his staff. He made the five-minute call on Jan. 29, according to Verizon phone logs released in response to litigation filed by the Sierra Club, an environmental advocacy group. The new documents do not show how many incoming calls Pruitt received in the soundproof booth, which he installed last year. In April, Pruitt testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee that he used the booth sparingly. “It’s for confidential communications, and it’s rare,” he told Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo. The Government Accountability Office concluded Pruitt violated federal spending laws when he built the phone booth, because he spent more than $5,000 without providing advance notice to Congress. Shortly after taking the helm, acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler told E&E News that he does not intend to dismantle the phone booth, saying, “It would be expensive to tear it apart.” JULIET EILPERIN AND BRADY DENNIS (TWP)

Melania Trump to visit Africa in first solo trip

Multiple strong earthquakes killed at least a dozen people on the Indonesian islands of Lombok and Sumbawa as the region was trying to recover from a temblor earlier this month that killed hundreds. The shallow magnitude 6.9 quake that hit about 10 p.m. Sunday caused landslides and was followed by strong aftershocks.

Melania Trump is planning her first big solo swing with a trip through several African countries in October. The first lady said Monday she’s looking forward to learning about the challenges children on the continent face, as well as appreciating Africa’s history and culture. Exact dates and which countries she will visit remain to be announced. (AP)

Left pushes Schumer to act on Kavanaugh Democrats struggling to forge unified effort in Supreme Court fight COURTS At least once a week, they assemble in Capitol meeting rooms for an hourlong strategy session. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer convenes the gatherings, which regularly include several Democratic senators, a dozen Senate aides and representatives of about 20 liberal organizations. The goal: figuring out how to derail President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, conservative appellate Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Up to now, participants say the strategy sessions have been cordial. Yet with Senate Judiciary Committee hearings just two weeks off, cracks in the alliance are showing. Schumer, D-N.Y., who plans to meet privately with Kavanaugh this week, is building arguments that would help three Democratic senators facing difficult reelection races in Trump-loving states vote “no,” while avoiding explicitly pressing them. But the party’s restive left wing says he’s not aggressively rallying Democratic lawmakers to oppose the nominee, thwarting the momentum needed to galvanize voters and maybe even win the uphill fight to block Kavanaugh. “It’s really a test for Schumer,” said Elizabeth Beavers, associate policy director of Indivisible, an

Ben Wikler, D.C. director of the activist group moveon.org, said unless leaders unify the party and raise the battle’s visibility, the news media will focus on Trump nemeses like fired White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman and lawyer Michael Avenatti. Republicans have a 50-49 Senate edge, excluding the absent and ailing Arizona Republican John McCain, so Democrats alone can’t stop a united GOP. Schumer’s hopes of defeating Kavanaugh lie in unearthing game-changing revelations in documents from his earlier White House and judicial jobs, or creating an irresistible groundswell against him among constituents of moderate Republicans and vacillating Democrats. A reunion in the North

Dozens of South Koreans briefly reunite with relatives they hadn’t seen in 70 years

‘How many children do you have?’ Lee Keum-seom, a 92-year-old from South Korea, asked her 71-year-old North Korean son, Ri Sang Chol, about his family after not seeing him since he was 4. Ri showed his mother a photo of her late husband, who had stayed behind in the North with Ri after being separated from his wife while fleeing.

KOREAN PENINSULA Nearly 90 South Korean families crossed the heavily fortified border into North Korea on Monday to be reunited with elderly relatives they had not seen since being separated in the chaos of war nearly seven decades earlier. Brothers, sisters, cousins, nephews and nieces cried and embraced each other in the first family reunions to take place in three years, a symbol of thawing ties across the Korean Peninsula. Some relatives could not even recognize each other, but that was not a problem for 88-year-old Kim Byung-oh and his 81-yearold North Korean sister Kim Soon Ok, who were separated while still at school. “I haven’t slept a wink since being selected for this family reunion,” Kim Byung-oh said as he met his sister, according to brief pool reports supplied by South Korean reporters. “Blood ties don’t disappear, even after all this time,” Kim Soon Ok replied. “You really look exactly like me.” Kim Soon Ok showed her brother an old photograph of herself at medical school and said she had worked as a doctor. “I lead a respected life in Pyongyang,” she said. Kim Byung-oh said he had worked as a high school headmaster until retiring 10 years ago, adding that it was an honor to see his sister had done so well. “Oh, brother, it will be great when reunification happens,” she said. “Let reunification happen, and let’s live together for even just one minute before we die.” After 11 hours together over the next three days, the pair will part, unlikely to see each other again. And — unless something changes — they will not even be able to exchange letters.

‘When I fled …’ Han Shin-ja, right, a 99-year-old from South Korea, got choked up after reuniting with her North Korean daughters — Kim Kyong Sil, 72, left, and Kim Kim Kyong Yong, 71. Not knowing their separation would be permanent, Han Shin-ja left them behind to flee with her third and youngest daughter. (AP/TWP)

The reunion program began in 1985, stalled, then got underway again at the turn of the millennium. In all, more than 17,000 South Koreans have taken part

in 20 reunions since then. A few thousand others have participated in a brief program of video linkups. But North Korea’s suspicion

of any outside influence means that many tens of thousands more have been denied the chance to meet: More than 130,000 South Koreans have registered as members of divided families since the program began, but more than half of them died before they were able to meet their relatives again. “It is a shame for both governments in the South and the North that many of the families have passed away without knowing whether their lost relatives were alive,” South Korean President Moon Jae-in said in a meeting with presidential secretaries Monday. The emotional reunions are also often tinged with frustration, with many North Koreans determined to publicly demonstrate their allegiance to the regime, out of genuine loyalty or just fear. South Korean Cha Je-keun, 84, soon got into an argument with his 50-year-old nephew, Cha Sung Il, of North Korea. Agreeing that the two nations should be reunified, the younger man exclaimed: “American bastards should be expelled.” Cha Je-keun tried to explain that the Korean War took place because North Korean leader Kim Il Sung invaded on June 25, 1950. “That’s a lie,” his nephew said, parroting North Korean propaganda. “American bastards waged the 6/25 war. We fought on our own.” “Yeah, that was good,” Cha Je-keun answered with a smile, ending the quarrel. A second round of reunions involving an additional 83 families will take place from Friday to Sunday. While South Korea chooses participants through a computerized lottery, experts say North Korea selects candidates based on their perceived loyalty to the regime. Woman sang to survive after falling from ship PULA, CROATIA A British woman who fell from a cruise ship and spent 10 hours in the Adriatic Sea at night sang to stay alive, her rescuers said Monday. The captain of the Croatian rescue ship that found Kay Longstaff, 46, floating some 45 nautical miles off Croatia’s coast said, “Luckily for her, we saw her immediately because she raised and waved her hands when she saw us.” Lovro Oreskovic told the Glas Istre portal on Monday that Longstaff told the crew that she practices yoga and that she sang while floating to stay awake. “It is a real miracle that she is alive,” Oreskovic said. “On the cruiser ship they thought she is not. It’s obvious that she’s very fit.” Longstaff said she fell from the back of the Norwegian Star cruise ship that was sailing toward Venice, Italy, shortly before midnight Saturday. The ship launched a search mission in the area of her fall, but could not find her. Some 10 hours later, she was rescued by the Croatian coast guard and taken to a hospital in the town of Pula for a 24-hour examination. Many questions remain about Longstaff’s ordeal, including how she got into the water and how she was able to survive so long. She declined to tell reporters how she fell off the cruise ship or what happened in the moments just before. (AP/TWP)

Afghan forces rescue 150 hostages from Taliban

Engineering experts determined in February that corrosion of the metal cables supporting the Genoa highway bridge had reduced the bridge’s strength by 20 percent — a finding that came months before it collapsed last week, Italian media reported Monday. Newsmagazine Espresso wrote that “neither the ministry, nor the highway company, ever considered it necessary to limit traffic, divert heavy trucks, reduce the roadway from two to one lanes or reduce the speed” of vehicles on the key artery for the northern port city. The Aug. 14 collapse killed 43 people and forced the evacuation of more than 600 others. (AP)

Shots were fired from a moving car at the U.S. Embassy in Turkey before dawn Monday, an attack that came during heightened tensions between the two NATO allies. Officials said two people with criminal records were detained. There were no casualties in the fleeting attack, in which three of the six bullets fired hit the embassy gate and a reinforced window in the building in Ankara. Officials named the suspects as Ahmet Celikten, 39, and Osman Gundas, 38, saying they had confessed. Celikten had escaped prison and Gundas had a criminal record that included car theft and drug offenses. (AP)

Afghan forces rescued nearly 150 people Monday, including women and children, hours after the Taliban ambushed a convoy of buses and abducted them. The militants escaped with 21 captives following the battle in Kunduz province, and officials said tribal elders were trying to negotiate their release. A spokesman for the governor said the Taliban have demanded the national identifications of the captives to determine their fate. The identities of the captives have not been made public, but officials said the insurgents likely targeted the buses to try to abduct civil servants or members of the security forces. (AP)

REDSKINS ADDITION

From left, Max Scherzer, Matt Adams, Spencer Kieboom and Juan Soto take in the 10th inning of a Saturday loss to Miami that was part of a 3-7 stretch.

THOMAS BOSWELL | THE WASHINGTON POST

No signs of life: Nationals’ season is as good as dead Whistling past the graveyard beats being placed in it. So the Nationals have been whistling for 125 games. Can’t blame them. But the sound you hear now is silence. All that’s left, after 10 awful days in which the Nats went 3-7 and squandered four games they should’ve won, is to tell fans where to send the wreaths and condolence notes. The culmination of this catastrophe was a 12-1 loss Sunday in which the inert, demoralized Nats were stunned like mackerel by the miserable Marlins. Miami had gone 2-15 entering Saturday but beat the Nats in back-to-back games. For many weeks, the Nats have had today circled as the beginning of a nine-game stretch, including six against Philadelphia, in which their last great stand would begin.

That’s when every injury, bad play and bad break would start reversing. That’s when the hot streak would start. On Sunday, the Nats said that Stephen Strasburg, out since June 8 except for one appearance, will start against the Phillies on Wednesday. Tanner Roark, on a five-game winning streak, goes today with Max Scherzer, working on a fourth Cy Young Award (or a first MVP award), on Thursday — maybe going for a sweep. That’s the way the Nats planned it in their defiant scenarios. Except that in the past 10 days, their season has probably already died from self-inflicted wounds. In Chicago on Aug. 10, they lost a one-run game in which at one point they held an 80 percent win expectancy. Good teams only lose a handful of such games a year. Two days later, they lost 4-3 on a

Keys to an unlikely rally Here’s what the Nationals have to do to make a playoff push. (EXPRESS) Dominate Philadelphia: The Nats entered Monday 6½ games behind the Phillies for the second NL wild card. They play Philly nine times in the final six weeks. Get help from Atlanta: The Braves have one series left against the Nats but could be flagging — they were swept by Colorado last weekend. Get help from the bullpen: From Aug. 1 through Monday, Nats relievers had the fifth-worst ERA in baseball (5.22) and had given up 14 homers, tied with Milwaukee for the most of any bullpen in the majors.

walk-off grand slam by a pinch hitter who was down to the game’s last strike. That hadn’t happened in the bigs in 79 years. The next night in St. Louis, they held another winning hand — this time 92 percent probability — and they blew that, too, on a walk-off homer against Koda Glover, the symbol of a wholly depleted bullpen. With 37 games left, the Nats should be starting a six-week playoff race. But every time they have a chance to make up ground, they play their worst. They entered Monday seven

games behind Atlanta and 6½ behind the Phillies in the NL East. The playoff deficit is worse than that when you include their slim wild-card chances. Six teams lead the Nats in the chase for two spots. To their credit, many Nats remain publicly defiant. They remember how the 2007 Mets blew a seven-game lead with 17 to play. In 2011, the Braves and Red Sox missed the playoffs after 8-18 and 7-20 skids got them eliminated in game No. 162. Outfielder Bryce Harper, for his part, isn’t ready to quit. “The next couple of weeks are going to be hard. But a lot of us are looking forward to it,” he said. It will be murder if they stink like they did Sunday. The Phillies must be terrified. For context, as well as shock value, it’s useful to recall that this team was so ultraconfident in spring training that manager Dave Martinez had players practice home run trots and walk-off celebrations, as well as bringing in symbolic camels. “Humps,” it has turned out, have been the very things the Nats seldom get over.

RB Peterson signs with Washington Seven-time Pro Bowl pick Adrian Peterson signed a one-year deal with Washington on Monday, the team announced. The running back played 10 seasons in Minnesota, winning NFL MVP in 2012. The 33-year-old’s latest 1,000-yard season was in 2015. He suffered a seasonending MCL injury three games into the 2016 season and began last season with the Saints before being sent to Arizona in a trade. In 10 games last year, he ran for just 529 yards. Peterson is 12th all-time in rushing yards, just 37 yards away from passing Jim Brown at No. 10. The Redskins needed help because Derrius Guice tore his ACL, and Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall are both sidelined with lower-leg injuries. (TWP)

Alabama starts out No. 1 for third straight season

Transfer QB Patterson will start opener for Michigan

Ohio St. trustees to discuss Meyer’s future Wednesday

Alabama will begin its quest for a second straight national title with a rare three-peat. The Crimson Tide is just the second team to be ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP poll for three straight years. Oklahoma (1985-1987) was the first. AP has released a preaseason poll since 1950. Clemson is No. 2, and Georgia, Wisconsin and Ohio State round out the top five. Virginia Tech ranks 20th. Central Florida, which went 13-0 and beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl last year, is No. 21. (AP)

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that the 14th-ranked Wolverines will open the season with junior Shea Patterson at quarterback Sept. 1 at No. 12 Notre Dame. Patterson, who beat out Brandon Peters, Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton, transferred from Ole Miss this offseason and was granted a waiver to play immediately. In the past two years, he started 10 games and threw for 3,139 yards with 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. (AP)

Following an investigation into coach Urban Meyer’s handling of domestic-abuse allegations against a former assistant that was completed Sunday, Ohio State trustees will meet Wednesday to talk about the football coach’s future. The panel will convene in a public session Wednesday before going behind closed doors to discuss next steps. President Michael V. Drake will have the final say on whether Meyer keeps his job or faces other consequences. (AP)

Terps share plans to honor McNair O-line meeting room, scholarship fund will be named in his memory COLLEGE FOOTBALL In an announcement Monday morning, Maryland football players detailed plans to honor Jordan McNair during the upcoming season, which will include a moment of silence during the team’s opener against Texas on Sept. 1 at FedEx Field. Monday was the first time the university made players available to speak with reporters since McNair died of exertional heatstroke following an offseason workout, which has embroiled the school in a scandal and triggered investigations into both the handling of McNair and the culture of the football program. In a joint statement Monday, offensive linemen Johnny Jordan and Ellis McKennie listed plans to honor McNair’s memory. The team will hold a moment of silence for McNair during home games against Texas and Temple in September. Players will wear helmet stickers bearing McNair’s No. 79 uniform number, which will be retired through the end of his eligibility in 2020. Maryland plans to name the offensive line’s meeting room

after McNair and encase his locker in glass. The school will also create a scholarship fund McNair in his name. “It’s time to get back to what is important, and that is honoring our fallen friend, brother and teammate, Jordan McNair,” said McKennie, who attended high school with McNair at McDonogh School in Baltimore. “The moment we stop saying his name, the moment that we begin to forget, his legacy will begin to fade. We plan to have his legacy live on forever.” The school’s Board of Regents announced Friday that it was assuming oversight of the investigations and will launch its own commission to probe allegations of a toxic culture in the program that had already sent coach DJ Durkin on administrative leave and prompted the resignation of strength coach Rick Court. Matt Canada, the team’s offensive coordinator, took over as interim head coach after Durkin was placed on leave on Aug. 4. Last week, Canada introduced a slew of new safety measures at practice, including hydration tents and increased mandatory breaks. ROMAN STUBBS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Being a slow runner isn’t a bad thing. It can help make you a better and even faster runner.

STUDIES SHOW...

GETTY IMAGES

More red meat, more weight loss?

For a slow run, most recreational runners will want to stay within about 60 to 70 percent of their maximum heart rate, Sharp says. In summer when it’s hot and humid, you’ll want to slow down even more to avoid overstressing your body and risking injury. Running in hot weather is sometimes called “the poor man’s altitude training,” Bartholic says, because it can simulate the kind of stress your body experiences running in high altitudes. And when you’re back in cooler temperatures, your pace tends to be faster with less effort. Still, there are obstacles to running slowly, says Jennifer Sacheck, chair of exercise and nutrition sciences at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. The time factor is the biggest hurdle to doing slow runs, Sacheck says. “Planning an hour or an hour and half is much more difficult than saying, ‘I’m going to bang out 10 minutes.’ ” CAROLEE BELKIN WALKER

A study published recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that modest amounts of unprocessed, lean red meat consumed within a Mediterranean diet don’t appear to have major health risks. Researchers from Purdue University and the University of Texas gathered 41 overweight or obese adults who were not following a Mediterranean diet and put them on such a diet that also included either 200 or 500 grams of lean red meat a week. The subjects followed one of the two diets for five weeks, spent four weeks selecting their own diet and then spent five weeks on whichever red-meat diet they hadn’t tried yet. The two diets did not differ in their effect on highdensity lipoproteins, triglycerides, insulin or glucose. The results also showed slightly greater weight loss during the higher red meat phase.

Take it slow and steady Running at a reduced speed can eventually help you become faster. Here’s how. FITNESS Are you a slow runner? That isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes, slowing down can help make you a better and even a faster runner. “When you’re running slowly, and your injury risk is lower, you can run more often, more miles, and build up slowly,” according to Claire Bartholic, a coach at RunnersConnect, an online community of runners and coaches. But running slowly also allows your body to improve the energy system most essential to running: your aerobic energy system. Your body relies on a few different energy systems to get you up and moving. For any sustained movement, it uses your aerobic energy system, meaning it creates energy with oxygen. Oxygen helps the muscles convert fat, protein and glycogen (generated from the carbohydrates you eat) into energy. If you want to be able to finish a marathon, for example, or even a 5K or a run around the block, this is the energy system you want to develop, says

Bartholic. And to develop it, you should run at a pace where your muscles can get plenty of oxygen. When you’re sprinting, or running so fast that you’ve reached your aerobic threshold, or, based on your level of conditioning, when your body runs out of oxygen, it switches over to another energy system — your anaerobic energy system. Without enough oxygen, your muscles convert glycogen into energy less efficiently, and you fatigue more quickly, which eventually forces you to slow down or stop. So if all your runs are too fast, according to Bartholic, you’re not developing the power system that you need for 97 percent of a race. “Your maximum aerobic benefit is going to be running slowly.” Of course, “ ‘slow’ is highly individualized and varies a lot between people,” according to Carwyn Sharp, chief science officer at the National Strength and Conditioning Association in Colorado Springs. That means you need to calculate how slowly

The talk test Another way to check your running pace is the “talk test,” says Carwyn Sharp of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. “If you can’t have a conversation with your running buddy, then you’re running too fast. If you can talk easily but are barely sweating, then you’re probably too slow. If you can talk fairly easily as you are running but have to pause occasionally in the conversation to catch your breath, that’s going to be fairly spot-on.” C.B.W.

you need to run to maximize your aerobic capacity. First, Sharp suggests this updated method for estimating your maximum heart rate. Multiply your age by .7 and subtract this number from 208 to get your estimated heart rate maximum, or the number of beats per minute that your heart is likely to be able to beat at its fastest. From there, you can look at your heart rate during exercise.

Viral hit ‘Sharknado’ Are you rides into the sunset a SHIFT WORKER? Are you 18 to 65? Do you work night or evening shifts? Do you have difficulty staying awake? Are you otherwise in good health?

TELEVISION “Sharknado,” which ended for good with the sixth and final movie Sunday night, wasn’t even supposed to exist. As the ridiculous origin story goes, the term was actually a throwaway line in another Syfy movie, “Leprechaun’s Revenge.” “There’s this town in the movie that’s, I guess, being besieged by leprechauns … and somebody says: ‘Gosh, I hope we don’t go the way of that other town. They never recovered after the sharknado hit,’ ” writer Thunder Levin told Vice. Thus, Syfy’s hit “Sharknado” franchise was born. In July 2013, the entertainment industry was stunned when the low-budget TV movie about a deadly shark tornado in Los Angeles — starring Ian Ziering and Tara Reid — took over social media on a random Thursday night. Tweets about #Sharknado streamed in at a rate of 5,000 per minute. The movie made little to no sense — and no one cared. It may have started as an inside joke, but it became a phenomenon. racked up millions of viewers. Syfy quickly ordered a sequel. And then four more movies. The final installment of the franchise, titled “The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time,” went just as you might expect Sunday night. Ziering reprised his role as shark hunter Fin, and Reid returned as his wife, April. Yes, April was killed in “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming,” but no worries — she was able to come back because the sixth Sharknado involved time travel. Honestly, it’s a waste of time to explain the “plot.” Just know that Fin and April went back in time to stop the first sharknado

from hitting the planet. They were somewhat successful, and also had to battle dinosaurs, so it was a lot of CGI fun for all involved. Alas, ratings have dropped steadily over the years, so “The Last Sharknado” didn’t make as big a splash as its predecessors. But there’s no denying that, in their own absurd way, the movies made an impact. “Thank you fans of #Sharknado … it’s been a wild ride,” tweeted Anthony C. Ferrante, the director of all six movies. “There will never be anything quite like this again.” EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

verbatim

“M heart is broken. I will continue my “My work wo on behalf of victims everywhere.” ROSE MCGOWAN, tweeting Monday after The New York Times reported that Asia RO Argento paid off actor Jimmy Bennett, who accused Argento of sexually assaulting Arg him when he was 17. McGowan and Argento, both of whom have accused Harvey Weinstein of rape, have been vocal leaders of the #MeToo movement.

Wait, was it a surprise for Lily or us? Lily Aldridge is expecting her second child with husband Caleb Followill, the Victoria’s Secret model announced Sunday on Instagram. Revealing her baby bump with a photo of herself smiling on the beach while wearing a bikini, Aldridge wrote: “SURPRISE.” Aldridge and Followill, the frontman for Kings of Leon, have a 6-year-old daughter named Dixie Pearl.

Nicki Minaj called out Travis Scott and girlfriend Kylie Jenner on Sunday after Scott’s “Astroworld” beat out Minaj’s “Queen” for the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 chart.
