Making profit from protest

Over the years, Bell expanded and experimented. He tried projecting messages onto the side of the Capitol and the Supreme Court building. In both cases, security chased him off within minutes. Many high-level government buildings are off-limits for security reasons. But the Trump

THE DISTRICT In a city with a long tradition of leftist activism, Robin Bell has become something of a D.C. celeb. Every few weeks, Bell puts messages of protest on the side of the Trump International Hotel. He’s called President Donald Trump a pig and a racist, used smiling poop emojis, and taunted the president with images of his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. And it’s all legal. Bell doesn’t use paint or posters, but a projector, so there’s no property damage and no crime. Police may swing by, but they can’t stop him. His work has turned into an unexpected business opportunity. Activist groups have paid his crew to travel as far as Finland to project images on prominent buildings. “One of the secrets to what we do and how we’ve been able to pull it off is that we’re transparent, Bell said. “We’re not hiding anything. The longtime D.C.-based activist and professional projectionist first combined his personal

Bell learned that as long as his crew members are not blocking traffic, obstructing the sidewalk or shining lights in the hotel windows, they’re fine. Hotel security has called police, but there’s not much police can do, and the crew is usually gone within 30 minutes anyway. “We know we’re allowed to do it. The police kind of know we’re allowed to do it. But it all kind of depends on the officer and their mood, he said. The work with activist groups has turned into an unexpected moneymaker for Bell and his crew. When Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki in July, the Human Rights Campaign paid to have messages about Chechnya projected on the presidential palace. Adrienne Cooper, director of the environmental group Defend Our Future, has hired Bell twice to do projections on the EPA building. “It’s a way to stand out and do something a little bit different, she said. “The staff of the EPA can ignore some billboard, but it’s harder to ignore a projection on the side of their own building. ASHRAF KHALIL (AP)

Md. Senate president digs in for upheaval
DINING
Isabella closes 4th restaurant in wake of suit
MARYLAND The country’s longest-serving Senate president is facing an upheaval, one that could topple politicians less savvy and less dominating than Thomas V. “Mike” Miller Jr. But this is Miller, and Miller always endures. The surging progressive wing of the Maryland Democratic Party defeated most of his lieutenants in the June primary and nominated gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous, a former NAACP president whose liberal agenda threatens to drive a wedge through Miller’s carefully calibrated chamber. The number of left-leaning groups targeting Miller, D-Calvert, as the key obstacle on issues such as a $15 minimum wage and sanctuary protections for immigrants is growing. And the primary wins by progressive insurgents, as well as spirited challenges from Republicans, all but guarantee a more polarized General Assembly come January. Yet political insiders say Miller’s perch atop the chamber he has led since Ronald Reagan was president is secure. A conservative Democrat by Maryland standards, Miller, 75, has spent the summer crafting a

new leadership team and reaching out to those who vanquished his political allies, preparing to move the chamber to the left on key issues and readjusting his grasp on the state’s levers of influence. On Thursday, he joined other state lawmakers in endorsing Jealous, although he barely mentioned the nominee in his remarks. “It goes without saying that he’s a political genius,” said U.S. Rep. Jamie B. Raskin, D-Md., who served nine years in the state Senate. “He has been open to a lot of the dramatic political changes of our time, even when it cuts against every fiber of his political upbringing.” Senate Minority Leader J.B. Jennings, R-Baltimore County, said Miller treats all senators
as though they occupy a special place in society. “He might hate you. He might fight you politically,” Jennings said. “But when it comes to being a senator, he treats you with respect.” In some ways, Jennings said, the upheaval in the Senate could solidify Miller’s tenure. Not only has he created a new generation of loyalty among his incoming leadership team, but with a more polarized Senate likely to emerge, there’s also no other consensus candidate — and no one else the Republican caucus would be likely to support. “For us, who is going to be more moderate than Mike Miller right now?” Jennings asked. “Nobody.” ERIN COX AND

Visitors to Maryland’s Eastern Shore are taking home a nasty, stinging reminder from their day at the beach. Small jellyfish nicknamed sea lice have been hanging out in the surf around Ocean City’s beach. The stinging sea creatures can cause some people to feel a prickling sensation while they’re in the water. The result can be a rash with red, itchy or burning bumps within a few hours of exposure. Officials recommend rinsing with freshwater soon after leaving the ocean. Sea lice have been a problem in Florida this summer, with other reports from North Carolina and Alabama. (AP)

A gunman opens fire at video game tourney
IDENTITY CRISIS
Fla. town goes from Mayo to Miracle Whip
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. A gunman opened fire Sunday at an online video game tournament that was being livestreamed from a Florida mall, killing multiple people and sending many others to hospitals, authorities said. Sheriff’s officers did not immediately confirm the number of dead at the Jacksonville Landing, a collection of restaurants and shops along the St. Johns River. But an official close to the investigation said the shooting left four people dead and that the gunman died from a selfinflicted gunshot wound. It was not clear if the official included the suspect in the death toll. Sheriff Mike Williams said authorities had yet to identify the suspect who attacked the video football tournament, which featured the game “Madden NFL 19.” The competition was held in a gaming bar that shares space with a pizzeria. Viewers could watch the games online and see the players. Investigators were looking into online video that appeared to capture the scene right before the shooting began, Williams said. A red dot that appears to be a laser pointer is visible on the chest of a player seconds before the first of a dozen gunshots rings out.

Official: Shooter leaves multiple people dead at Florida shopping mall
Police gather after an active shooter was reported at a Madden video game tournament at Jacksonville Landing in Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday.
The shooti ng comes six months after a massacre at a high school in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 dead. Electronic Arts, the digital interactive entertainment company in charge of the tournament, said it was aware of the shooting and cooperating with law enforcement. “This is a horrible situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved,” the company said. Player Drini Gjoka tweeted: “The tourney just got shot up. [I’m leaving] and never coming back.” Then: “I am literally so lucky. The bullet hit my thumb. Worst day of my life.” Reports of the shooti ng quickly reached the University of Florida College of Medicine in
Jacksonville, the area’s premier trauma center. Six male shooting victims in their early- to mid-20s were treated there, four of whom were shot in the torso, said Marie Crandall, the attending trauma surgeon. The two others were shot in the extremities. One victim was in serious condition, but all were expected to survive. Three other shooting victims, in stable condition, were treated at Memorial Hospital in southeast Jacksonville, hospital spokesman Peter Moberg said. The Jacksonville Landing, in the heart of the city’s downtown, also hosts concerts and other entertainment. It was the site of a Donald Trump rally in 2015, early in his campaign for the White House. The mayor of Mayo, Fla., a tiny town of less than 1,500 residents, announced Saturday that the city is switching its name to “Miracle Whip.” The name change is a tongue-in-cheek marketing stunt for the Kraft Heinzowned mayonnaise alternative. The town’s elected officials, who had planned the stunt with Miracle Whip in secret, said they were planning to let residents in on the joke, but only after street signs and the name on the water tower were switched out. The town is getting between $15,000 and $25,000 for the name change, which will be used for city beautification. (AP)

John McCain was the presidential candidate for the Republican Party in 2008, losing to Barack Obama.
For McCain, country was first The death of the war hero, senator and presidential contender marks the end of an American political era so with courage and conviction, sometimes with grit and anger, almost always with humor and affection for those who joined him in the battles. As a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, he refused to leave behind his fellow POWs when he was offered the chance. It was not in his character to do so, and throughout his life he always refused to abandon the causes in which he believed, even at times when he was a lonely voice. The Vietnam prison camp was a brutal and dehumanizing experience that left him physically broken for the rest of his life. Yet even in pain, he operated with remarkable energy, always eager for the next fight. He chose his battles, picked his fights, and then found allies wherever he could, whether in his own party or the other party. He thrived on cross-partisan cooperation, when it was possible. McCain wore his convictions, his disappointments, his anger, his ebullience openly. He was not afraid of reporters; in his 2000

APPRECIATION The death of Sen. John McCain on Saturday marks the passing of a man, an American patriot and a politician whose record of service to country will always be his defining attribute. His death also punctuates the passing of an era of American politics, one that in these troubled times seems almost irretrievable. McCain would not want to hear that, but he would know it to be true. The accolades for the Arizona senator — who died at the age of 81 after a battle with brain cancer — that poured forth in a torrent of admiration and respect in the hours after his death are deserved. He was a heroic figure who put country first, ahead of party, ahead of everything else. Not a perfect man, as he was often the first to say, but someone whose very flaws made him a more authentic and effective advocate for the causes he pursued. McCain was born and bred to serve, the son and grandson of Navy admirals, and he did

nominee than to himself. He could not hide his dissatisfaction. But it was the beginning of a different era, of social media and the like, changes that robbed him of some of the spontaneity that had marked his personality. For the past three years,
McCain had been one of President Trump’s fiercest critics. But in ways different from how Trump belittled him as “not a hero” for having been shot down in Vietnam. McCain’s criticisms were grounded in policy and conflicting world views, especially on Russia and Vladimir Putin. In one of his final acts, he turned against the president and his own party to sink the bill that would have repealed and replaced the Affordable Care Act. That moment last year, devastating for what it did to the Republican Party and the president, stands as a reminder of the man and the time in which he long served. McCain rarely wavered in the way he conducted himself and his politics, even to the end. But times change. His death is a reminder not only of the loss of a giant in American politics, but of a new time, with new challenges for the generation that now must follow in his footsteps. Francis accused of cover-up
Some 500,000 had been expected to attend the pope’s Mass in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on Sunday, but the crowd was noticeably smaller than that.
at Dublin’s Phoenix Park, Francis spoke in Spanish and asked for forgiveness for what he called “abuses of power, conscience, and sexual abuse perpetrated by members with roles of responsibility in the church,” according to a translation of his remarks. “We ask forgiveness for some members of the church’s hierarchy who did not take charge of these painful situations and kept quiet,” Francis said.
Some 500,000 had been expected to attend the Mass, but the crowd was noticeably smaller, with patches of grass visible in areas that had been intended for spectators. Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile and other countries — have fed and amplified the bitter polarization within the Catholic Church. Some of Francis’ critics, including Vigano, are calling for the pope to step down. The Vatican had no immediate comment. The letter was the latest dramatic development stemming from a fresh wave of allegations related to clergy sex abuse and its cover-up. Rumors that had swirled for decades about McCarrick exploded in June, when Pope Francis suspended him. Last month, McCarrick, facing credible allegations of abusing seminarians and minors, became the first U.S. cardinal ever to resign. Vigano, 77, was the Holy See’s apostolic nuncio, or ambassador, in Washington from 2011 until 2016. He has been a lightning rod within the Vatican who lost a power struggle under Benedict, emerged as a Francis critic, and reportedly ordered the halt of an inquiry into the alleged sexual relations between an archbishop in Minnesota and seminarians. Jason Berry, who has written several investigative books about the Vatican, said he believes this is the first time a pope has been accused from within. CHICO HARLAN,
Heart benefits of aspirin may be overstated HEALTH Taking a low-dose aspirin every day has long been known to cut the chances of another heart attack, stroke or other heart problem in people who already have had one, but the benefits don’t outweigh the risks for many other people, major new research finds. The latest studies are some of the largest and longest to test aspirin in those who don’t yet have heart disease. One study published in the journal Lancet found that aspirin did not help prevent first strokes or heart attacks in people at moderate risk for one because of other health issues. Researchers gave aspirin or dummy pills to 12,546 people. After five years, 4 percent of each group had suffered a heart problem — far fewer than expected, suggesting these people were actually at low risk. Other medicines they were taking to lower blood pressure and cholesterol may have cut their risk so much that aspirin had little chance of helping more, said study leader J. Michael Gaziano. In another study, Oxford researchers tested aspirin in people with diabetes, who have a higher risk of heart problems. They gave 15,480 adults either aspirin, fish oil, both substances or dummy pills every day. After seven and a half years, there were fewer heart problems among aspirin users but more cases of serious bleeding, so they largely traded one risk for another. MARILYNN MARCHIONE (AP)

Smith can’t get in sync With few preseason snaps, Redskins quarterback has little chance to work on timing NFL Redskins coach Jay Gruden was not going to risk quarterback Alex Smith getting hurt before a real game. After losing rookie running back Derrius Guice in the first quarter of the first of four meaningless exhibitions, Gruden can’t afford more calamities. “My whole intent is to get our starting group to [the opening game in] Arizona healthy,” Gruden said after Friday night’s 29-17 preseason loss to Denver. By preserving the health of his most important players, Gruden is sacrificing at least a little piece of something important: timing. Smith enters his first season with Washington having played precious few minutes with the men who will block for him and
the receivers who will catch his passes. Because Smith won’t play Thursday at Baltimore, his first preseason with the team amounts to one series in the second game and three in Friday’s third game. Smith and his receivers were clearly off against the Broncos. He went 3 of 8 for 33 yards and took a sack. Most of his throws were lofted a bit too far, the kind of thing that’s often fixed by familiarity and repetition. He and his receivers may have built a connection in practice, but it’s hard to duplicate game conditions in Richmond and Ashburn. A few years ago, starters had the equivalent of a complete game spread over three exhibitions to jell instead of about a quarter of total play. But teams
Peterson a bright spot Although the Redskins’ first-team offense struggled in a 29-17 preseason loss to the Broncos on Friday, Adrian Peterson impressed in his first game action with the club. Four days after signing a one-year deal, Peterson, 33, rushed for 56 yards on 11 carries. He rumbled for 7 yards on his first touch and broke off runs of 13 and 15 yards. (EXPRESS)
don’t expose their top players to that much contact anymore. The first team Smith played with Friday wasn’t even complete. Tight end Jordan Reed, wide receiver Jamison Crowder and running back Chris Thompson were all held out.
“Any offense is going to be better with all the weapons out there, of course,” Smith said. Going into Arizona, Smith will have thrown just 14 passes to his new teammates this preseason. The risk for the Redskins is that may not be enough for a new quarterback and his offense to prepare for the regular season. Smith has been remarkably consistent in his career. History says he won’t need many throws for those passes that were inches away from receivers’ fingers to start landing in their hands. T he qua r terback ’s t i ming will have to be perfected in the contact-free cocoon of practice. Such is the choice in modern professional football.
Amid a probe into the football culture at Maryland, an Alabamabased attorney who said he has worked with the school’s athletes on eligibility issues for the past three years called its athletic department a “dysfunctional viper pit” rife with “internal backbiting and administrative incompetence.” Don Jackson posted those comments to Facebook on Friday, a day after the school stated that former athletic director Kevin Anderson, below, used a “serious lack of judgement” in 2017 by authorizing a $15,000 payment for Jackson’s firm to represent two football players accused of sexual assault. Two sources said coach DJ Durkin first contacted Jackson, who said he had minimal dealings with Anderson. (TWP)

DUBLIN A former Vatican ambassador to the United States has alleged in an 11-page letter that Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis — among other top Catholic Church officials — became aware of sexual misconduct allegations against former D.C. archbishop Cardinal Theodore McCarrick years before he resigned this summer. The letter from Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, who was recalled from his D.C. post in 2016 amid allegations that he’d become embroiled in the conservative American fight against same-sex marriage, was first reported by the National Catholic Register and LifeSite News, two conservative Catholic sites. The letter offered no proof, and Vigano on Sunday told The Washington Post he wouldn’t comment further, beyond confirming that he was the letter’s author. The accusations landed as Francis was in Ireland, wrapping up one of the most fraught trips of his papacy, coming face-toface with the church’s damaged credibility in a country reeling from decades of abuse. It took only one pitch for Mana Lau Kong to deliver Hawaii its first Little League World Series title in 10 years. Kong homered on the first pitch his team saw, and Ka’olu Holt pitched a complete game to lead the team from Honolulu to a 3-0 victory over Seoul in the championship game Sunday in South Williamsport, Pa. Forward has 32 points in Atlanta as Mystics lead best-of-5 semis MYSTICS 87, DREAM 84 Elena Delle Donne had 32 points and 13 rebounds, Ariel Atkins added 15 points and Washington beat Atlanta 87-84 on the road Sunday in the first game of the best-of-five WNBA semifinals. Game 2 is Tuesday in Atlanta. Elizabeth Williams finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Dream, which never led. Alex Bentley’s 3-pointer pulled
the Dream within three points midway through the fourth quarter. Tiffany Hayes banked in a fastbreak jumper and hit the ensuing free throw to pull Atlanta within three with 58.9 seconds left. But Hayes missed a layup, and Jessica Breland couldn’t hit a 3 on Atlanta’s last possession before time expired. Hayes, the Dream’s leading scorer, had 17 points but was mostly a non-factor for the first three quarters. Bentley scored 19 off the bench. The Mystics hit all 20 of their free-throw attempts. Delle

Delle Donne powers Game 1 victory
Elena Delle Donne and the Mystics play Game 2 on Tuesday in Atlanta.
Donne, who finished third in MVP voting, made 10 of them. The Dream had won 15 of 17 games but were missing star guard Angel McCoughtry, who was lot for the season when she suffered a knee injury earlier this month. Washington is trying to advance past the semifinals for the first time in its 21 seasons, but they are back in the postseason for the second straight year after getting swept in 2017 by eventual champion Minnesota. Soto’s grounder helps Nats end record drought Trea Turner set off a lively dugout celebration after scoring a run that ended Washington’s 32-inning scoreless drought, and then the Nationals really went wild at the plate, hammering the Mets 15-0 on Sunday in New York. The Nationals had been shut out in three straight games — for the first time since the team moved from Montreal to Washington in 2005 — before Juan Soto’s RBI groundout in the sixth. The Nats scored eight runs in the eighth — their biggest inning of the season. Mark Reynolds belted his sixth career grand slam in the ninth. (AP)

Jim Carrey stars as a Mr. Rogers-esque children’s TV personality in this dramedy from director Michel Gondry, with the first episode available Friday on demand ahead of its Sept. 9 broadcast premiere. NETFLIX
Lara Jean gets lost in Peter Kavinsky’s eyes. And honestly, who wouldn’t?
Following the formula Hollywood should learn from Netflix’s success with ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ STREAMING As you may have heard, Netflix is having quite a summer of romantic comedies. Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos recently boasted that “The Kissing Booth” was “one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe in the world.” “Set It Up” became a favorite with viewers in June, while the streaming giant included other offerings such as “Like Father” and “Ibiza.” As the Netflix rom-com factory keeps churning, it’s easy for selections to get lost, though that is not the case with “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” about a teenager whose private love letters to her crushes are inadvertently delivered to their doorsteps. A mere
week after its release, the film has whipped up an intense fan base and rave reviews. The chance of a sequel from Netflix is likely — the film is based on Jenny Han’s popular young adult trilogy, so source material already exists. But, as happens with any hit, others in Hollywood will take notice as they try to replicate the success. And there are a couple of lessons from the positive reaction to the film. First, it’s an important reminder that your rom-com leads don’t have to be all white. Even though that might seem like an obvious one, as it’s 2018 and there are many blockbuster movies that feature diverse casts, Han told People magazine that she had
The internet’s new beau Never, ever underestimate the power of a leading man who is simply kind. Lara Jean’s most significant crush, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), has become an internet sensation. Sure, Peter is the typically handsome athlete, but he’s also sensitive, thoughtful and emotionally intelligent. E.Y.
to turn down offers from studios that wanted Lara Jean’s (Lana Condor) character to be white rather than Asian-American. Another big lesson: Even though satire and snark are popular tonal choices, sometimes viewers crave a movie that’s just
really nice. Sound boring? Really, it’s just refreshing. This has come up multiple times in coverage of the film, as the most common descriptor is “sweet.” Vox, for example, praised “the unabashed sweetness of this movie, and the way it builds itself around nice people who care about each other and want to do nice things for each other.” Other movies only wish that they could form this kind of connection with viewers. So, hopefully, “All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” will not only help prove that rom-coms can command a devoted audience, but, with just a few unique elements, they can stand out from all the rest.
2 ‘Ozark’ Friday on Netflix
Jason Bateman and Laura Linney play a married couple who find themselves falling deeper into a life of organized crime in the Missouri Ozarks as the acclaimed drama series returns for a second season.

1927-2018 Neil Simon, the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning author of plays such as “The Odd Couple,” “Barefoot in the Park” and “Lost in Yonkers,” was often called the world’s most popular playwright after Shakespeare. Time magazine proclaimed him the “patron saint of laughter.” Simon, who died of pneumonia Sunday at 91, dominated Broadway like no other playwright of the past half-century. Hardly a year passed from 1961 to 1993 without a new production by Simon, whose legacy was a colossally successful run of comedies and comic dramas on topics such as romance, adultery, divorce, sibling rivalry, cancer and the fear of aging. Frequently, Simon’s plays centered on white, middle-class Americans — mostly New Yorkers and mainly Jews — but the characters were universally relatable. Boasting an arsenal of sarcastic wit, he considered himself “an investigator” of the quotidian. “I don’t write social and political plays, because I’ve always thought the family was the microcosm of what goes on in the world,” Simon told The Paris Review in 1992. “I write about the small wars that eventually become the big wars.” His output included dozens of plays, the scripts for five hit musicals, more than 20 screenplays and two volumes of memoirs. In the late 1960s and again in the mid-1980s, Simon had four shows on Broadway simultaneously, the only times since Avery Hopwood

in the 1920s that a playwright had achieved such a feat. His crowning early comic achievement was 1965’s “The Odd Couple,” which became a hit film and TV sitcom and introduced two characters now embedded in pop culture: the sloppy, funloving Oscar Madison and the fussy neatnik Felix Ungar. Simon won Tony Awards for “The Odd Couple” and “Biloxi Blues” (1985), the latter being
part of his semi-autobiographical trilogy that included the longrunning shows “Brighton Beach Memoirs” (1982) and “Broadway Bound” (1986). He collected the Pulitzer Prize for drama and another Tony for “Lost in Yonkers” (1991), a comedy about multigenerational domestic conflict. In the 1980s and ’90s, Simon faced a backlash from critics who thought that his seriousthemed works were concerned more with setting up a punchline than presenting fully rounded characters. Simon responded to such opinions in his 1999 memoir, “The Play Goes On.” “I have been accused by critics of trying to sugarcoat the pain with laughter,” he wrote. “I always thought the humor was the instrument I used to first reach people, and then, as an extension of the characters and stories, I would deliver the underlying issue, the pain that so many of us want to avoid at any cost.” ADAM BERNSTEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“The fact that you paid $10 for cranberry juice, $30 for pancakes, and $42 for a salad is more shocking to me than anything else.” @HILLARYBEALE, reacting to a receipt
that Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander shared on his social media Friday. Verlander had lunch at the Beverley Hills Hotel, and was jokingly charged $1 million for being a “Dodger Killer” — a reference to the Astros’ defeat of the L.A. Dodgers in the 2017 World Series. Verlander said Sunday that the hotel actually paid for the meal.
“I think the people who didn’t pay for the KSI vs. Logan Paul fight are the real winners.” @TVKIPS, tweeting about the pay-per-view boxing match on
YouTube Saturday night between YouTubers Logan Paul and KSI, which was preceded by a match between their younger brothers, Jake Paul and Deji, who are also YouTubers. Rumors of a match began in February after KSI defeated another YouTuber, Joe Weller. KSI then challenged the Paul brothers, and the two sets of siblings started trading disses on their channels before the fight — and a rematch — were booked in March. Logan Paul and KSI’s match ended in a draw, while Jake Paul defeated Deji in a fifth-round TKO.
“NBC returned from a special report on John McCain’s death to ... this.” @JONBLATHO, reacting to the awkward
transition on Saturday night from NBC News’ breaking news alert on the death of Sen. John McCain to a rerun of “America’s Got Talent.” As is typical with breaking news, the report on McCain interrupted the channel’s programming, which resumed immediately afterward. Many found it disconcerting that the “America’s Got Talent” segment that followed the unfortunate news was of two shirtless men simulating a love story between dolphins.
“How on Earth Serena’s outfit can be described as disrespecting the game is beyond me. Especially since it was designed to help protect against a potentially fatal medical condition.” @RISCASISTER, reacting to French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli’s comment that Serena Williams will no longer be allowed to wear her catsuit to the French Open. Williams wore the suit to this year’s tournament to prevent blood clots. She said Saturday that she was “fine” with the situation.
