European hornets have been removed after building a large nest in a car in Alliance, Ohio, in a scene that looked like a horror movie. Travis Watson, who owns The Bee Man, was called into action after the nest was found inside the El Camino on Sunday. Watson told WJW-TV the hornets aggressively defend the nest and can sting repeatedly. He wore a triple-layer suit and sting-proof gloves to remove the nest. (AP)
Police have warned residents of an Indiana community not to approach a herd of bison that escaped from a nearby farm. The Steuben County Sheriff’s office said the bison escaped Sunday from Pleasant Lake Buffalo Farm. Owner Cathy Sanders told WANE-TV that 58 bison got out. Police in the adjacent town of Hamilton warned residents about the bison, urging them not to approach the animals, which “can become aggressive.” (AP)

ANIMALS Naked mole rats are about to get a new home at the National Zoo, which will have built-in electronic equipment for performing a task that defies the naked eye: telling these almost identical small, hairless mammals apart. All of the animals are about the same size (about 3 inches long), the zoo said Monday, and have the same pinkish skin, and large incisor teeth. So it’s no easy assignment to distinguish among these underground creatures. Similar to how players on sports teams wear numbers for easy identification, the zoo’s ID system uses numbers to keep track of the 17 naked mole rats. Electronic chips inserted under the animals’ skin already allow keepers equipped with chip readers to tell one naked mole rat from the others. In the zoo’s new mole rat digs, tunnels have been installed for the animals’ use. At one point in these passageways, the zoo has installed a chip reader. When the rats pass the reader, the zoo said, their personal information will show up on a screen

THE DISTRICT Catholic teachers on Tuesday added their voices to the escalating calls for the archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, to resign after a one-two punch of major scandals for the church implicated the cardinal in covering up sexual abuse. First, a massive investigation in Pennsylvania that documented abuse by 300 priests over the course of 70 years focused attention on Wuerl’s mixed record of dealing with abusive priests when he was bishop of Pittsburgh. And then Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, in a dramatic letter that is rattling the church, included an allegation that Wuerl knew about sexual misconduct committed by his predecessor Theodore McCarrick, of which Wuerl insists he was unaware. The misconduct in question involved young priests and seminarians, although this summer McCarrick was accused of harassing two minors as well. “We’re demanding that Cardinal Wuerl step down,” said Jack Devlin, one of more than 40 Catholic school teachers who demonstrated against Wuerl outside the annual back-to-school Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday morning. “How can I face my students, one, with this on the table, and two, when we tell them to speak up for what’s right,

Police investigate sexual abuse allegations at Jewish preschool in Northwest D.C.
Women who were secretly videotaped by a once-prominent Orthodox rabbi as they used a Jewish ritual bath would get at least $25,000 each under a proposed $14.25 million settlement of a class-action lawsuit. The settlement involves four religious institutions affiliated with Rabbi Bernard Freundel. It needs a judge’s approval. Freundel was arrested in 2014 after a recording device was discovered in D.C.’s National Capital Mikvah. Prosecutors found he had filmed some 150 women. Police sergeant arrested outside of strip club A Baltimore police supervisor was charged with being drunk and disorderly at a strip club. Baltimore police said Sgt. Henrietta Middleton was arrested outside Norma Jean’s early Sunday. Middleton is a 12-year veteran of the force and is assigned to the unit that trains officers on the Constitution. Police responding to a report of a disorderly patron found Middleton, who refused to comply with them. She was offduty and not in uniform. Police said the incident is under internal investigation. State attorney general: Arming teachers is illegal Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring is warning a rural school district that its plan to arm teachers is unlawful. Herring’s office released an opinion Tuesday saying the school board in Lee County should not proceed with its plan to let an undisclosed number of teachers and staff members carry guns in school. The board voted in July to arm teachers, saying it’s a cost-effective way to protect against school shootings. (AP)

Twice in two days, trains end up on wrong lines TRANSPORTATION Riders on a Franconia-bound Metro Blue Line train ended up at Courthouse on the Orange Line Tuesday morning after the train took the wrong route. It wasn’t the first time. On Monday, a Silver Line train ended up at Arlington Cemetery station on the Blue Line, the transit agency confirmed. Metro said the misrouting was caused by signal problems and that it has taken proper “corrective actions.” The agency said “there was no safety issue.” In Tuesday’s incident, Metro told riders to expect delays on the Blue Line after what it called a “train malfunction” at Rosslyn. Federal labor organizations won a major battle against President Trump when a U.S. District Court ruling Saturday overturned key sections of executive orders that substantially undermined government unions. But the lingering effects could continue to haunt the already mangled managementlabor relationship in an administration that has taken one step after another to alienate federal employees. First, will the administration obey the court order? The White House and its Office of Management and Budget are not saying. The Justice Department, which lost the court case, would only say the administration is considering its options. But there is a strong indication the administration will not obey the order, at least not yet. The response of the Social Security Administration is instructive. It demonstrates no hurry to follow the court’s decision. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson declared large portions of Trump’s orders “invalid” and prohibited “the President’s

A standard survivor benefit is provided by default, but you could elect a smaller benefit, or none, if your spouse consents in writing. The default monthly survivor benefit under the Federal Employees Retirement System — which generally covers federal employees first hired in 1984 or after — is 50 percent of the retiree’s annuity. To pay for it, your annuity will be reduced by 10 percent. A benefit of 25 percent also is available, at a cost of a 5 percent reduction in your annuity. Under the older Civil Service Retirement System, the default survivor benefit is 55 percent of your annuity, although any lower amount can be chosen. Your annuity will be reduced by about 10 percent of the level you choose. Surviving spouse annuities are based on the retiree’s annuity before the reduction, including inflation adjustments since retirement. The benefit continues for the life of the surviving spouse unless he or she remarries before age 55. Survivors receiving annuities also can remain in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, with the same government contribution toward premiums, if they were covered at the retiree’s death. POLITICS President Trump lashed out at U.S. tech companies Tuesday, accusing Google and others of suppressing conservative voices and “hiding information” and good news. He cited no evidence for the claim, which echoes both his own attacks on the press and a conservative talking point. Google, which operates the world’s most popular search engine, responded by saying: “We never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment.” Trump tweeted before dawn: “This is a very serious situation - will be addressed!” Hours later, Larry Kudlow, the president’s top economic adviser, said the White House is “taking a look” at whether Google searches should be subject to some government regulation. Trump has made similar complaints before, but he carried it a step further Tuesday. “Google search results for ‘Trump News’ shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal?” He added, without evidence, that “96% of results on ‘Trump News’ are from National LeftWing Media, very dangerous.” In response, Google said its

DALLAS A white former police officer was convicted of murder on Tuesday for fatally shooting an unarmed black teenager when he fired into a car full of teenagers leaving a house party in suburban Dallas. Dallas County jurors were not swayed by the claim of former Balch Springs police officer Roy Oliver, above, that he feared for his partner’s life when he fired into the vehicle. The gunfire killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. Gasps echoed around the courtroom as the verdict was read. After the jury left, Edwards’ relatives sobbed and hugged prosecutors, waved their hands in the air and proclaimed, “Thank you, Jesus!” Oliver and his partner, Tyler Gross, were responding to a report of underage drinking at a house party when the shooting occurred in April 2017. Oliver was fired from the Balch Springs Police Department days later. Oliver testified during the trial that he opened fire after seeing the car move toward his partner. But Gross told jurors he didn’t fear for his life. Prosecutors described Oliver as looking for a reason to kill. Oliver was found not guilty on two lesser charges Tuesday stemming from the shooting. Mom: Bullying led to child’s suicide DENVER Before Jamel Myles died, he said that kids at his Colorado elementary school had told him to commit suicide, his mother said. Jamel’s mother, Leia Pierce, told Fox affiliate KDVR that her 9-year-old son had told her he was gay and that when he returned to school from summer break, he wanted to come out to his peers. On Thursday — days after Jamel started the fourth grade at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School — police responded to a “medical incident” at his Denverarea home and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Denver police said Monday in a statement to The Washington Post. Although the circumstances surrounding Jamel’s death remain unclear, police said the medical examiner ruled his death a suicide. Jamel’s mother told KDVR that she believes that her son killed himself in part because he was bullied at school — and she wants to raise awareness about how damaging it can be to a child’s self-esteem. Authorities and school district officials have not confirmed that bullying was a factor in Jamel’s death but have said that the case is still under investigation.

POLITICS Shunned at two funerals and one (royal) wedding so far, President Trump may be well on his way to becoming president non grata. The latest snub comes in the form of the upcoming funeral for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz: Before his death, the senator made it clear he did not want Trump to attend. That the feeling is mutual — Trump nixed issuing a statement that praised McCain as a “hero” — only underscores the myriad ways Trump has rejected the norms of his office and, increasingly, has been rejected in turn. Less than two years into his first term, Trump has often come to occupy the role of pariah — both unwelcome and unwilling to perform the basic rituals and ceremonies of the presidency, from public displays of mourning to cultural ceremonies. In addition to being pointedly not invited to McCain’s funeral and memorial service later this week — while former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will both eulogize the Arizona Republican — Trump was quietly asked to stay away from former first lady Barbara Bush’s funeral earlier this year. “We’re not talking about a president going and having a rally in a state that voted against him,” said Tim Naftali, a presidential historian at New York University. “We’re talking about a president who can’t even go and participate in a ritual where presidents are usually welcomed, and that is one of the consequences of his having defined the presidency in a sectarian way.” Trump’s conspicuous absences

HEALTH Gun deaths worldwide total about 250,000 yearly, and the United States is among just six countries that make up half of those fatalities, a study found. The results from one of the most comprehensive analyses of firearm deaths reveal “a major public health problem for humanity,” according to an editorial published with the study Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Although recent headlines make it seem like gun killings are surging globally, the new figures tell a more nuanced story. Researchers counted about 209,000 gun deaths in 1990 compared with 251,000 in 2016. The average rate, about 4 per 100,000 people, was mostly unchanged. Two-thirds of the deaths in 2016 were homicides, although the U.S. is among wealthy countries where suicides by gun outnumber gun killings, the study found. There were notable increases in gun deaths in many of the 195 countries involved in the study, particularly in Central and South America, where the rates reached nearly 40 per 100,000 in some places. Researchers said the drug trade and economic instability may have contributed. Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Venezuela are the countries that with the U.S. contributed to half the deaths in the study. LINDSEY TANNER (AP)

Griffin is fighting for his NFL life, trying hard to make the Ravens as their third quarterback. Thursday night’s preseason game against the Redskins in Baltimore will likely belong to him, giving him every chance to dazzle coach John Harbaugh and Ravens executives and make it hard to cut him in favor of retaining just two quarterbacks. Gruden, who has said he won’t
watch much Ravens game film in preparation for the game, didn’t talk much about Griffin this week, other than to say he believes there is a place for a player like RGIII in the NFL. In a sense, Griffin is just another player to him, not the quarterback whose injuries and inconsistency doomed the Redskins to a 4-12 record and a last-place finish in the NFC East in Gruden’s first season in 2014. “Anyone who can run and throw is very important nowadays,” Gruden said. “Mobility and the zone reads and all that stuff, but it just depends on the roster and who he’s competing with.” Three years ago this month, Gruden declared Kirk Cousins

Goalkeeper Bill Hamid returned to D.C. United after logging just three matches in nine months playing overseas.
Hamid went to Europe but left his heart in D.C. United goalie kept tabs on his MLS club during stint in Danish league D.C. UNITED Last fall, Bill Hamid severed ties with the only professional club he had known. After coming up through D.C. United’s youth academy and spending eight seasons as one of the top goalkeepers in MLS, the Annandale native left his childhood team for Danish club Midtjylland. But after logging just three matches in nine months overseas, Hamid returned to United on a year-and-a-half loan earlier this month. When Hamid was reintroduced at a news conference, D.C. coach Ben Olsen said, “It was as if he never left.” The short duration of Hamid’s stay in Denmark is only part of the reason that rang true. Hamid, 27, stayed in touch with United general manager Dave Kasper, exchanging text messages every month or so. He also stayed up until the wee hours of the morning in Scandinavia so
he could watch United games. When Wayne Rooney visited D.C. in May ahead of his summer signing, Hamid took the train down from Philadelphia — where he had an off-day from U.S. national team camp — and let the English star pick his brain. “I’m thankful to the club for caring about me and always keeping up to date with what was going on,” Hamid said. “And I always kept up to date with what was going on over here.” Hamid has conceded just two goals in three matches since his return, recording the team’s first shutout since April in a 2-0 win over New England on Aug. 19. The 2014 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year is set to play his fourth straight game when United (7-10-6) hosts the Philadelphia Union (11-11-3) tonight at Audi Field (8, WJLA 24/7 News). “He’s one of the best goalkeepers this league has ever seen,” Olsen said. “It’s been an up-anddown year and a half for Bill, and he wants to prove that he’s the goalkeeper he was.” Re-establishing that status

Playing at the margins An Afghan rock band in Iran copes with struggles shared by millions of refugees MUSIC The band gathers in a small carpentry shop on the outskirts of Tehran, with sawdust still in the air but the buzzing of the jigsaws now exchanged for the soft feedback of an amplifier. Hakim Ebrahimi opens with the first dreamy notes of “Afghanistan,” the sound of their Metallica-inspired rock ballad filling the air. The four rockers that make up the band, known as Arikayn, are Afghan refugees, and their struggles mirror those of millions of other Afghans who have fled to Iran during decades of war. They once had to sneak through a Taliban checkpoint to play a gig in their home country, and they face discrimination in Iran, but they say that hasn’t
stopped them from playing the music they love. “This is very hard for all of us, but when we play a song, we become the person that we want to be,” bassist Mohammad Rezai says. More than 3 million Afghans, including over 1 million who entered without legal permission, live in the Islamic Republic, according to United Nations estimates. Three of the band’s four original members were born in Iran, including female guitarist and vocalist Soraya Hosseini, drummer Akbar Bakhtiary and Rezai. Ebrahimi came to Iran as a child. They formed the band Arikayn, which is Dari for “Lantern,” in 2013. The band members say they

Bakhtiary, the band’s drummer, left Iran along with other Afghan migrants hoping to reach Europe. Rezai, the band’s bassist, prefers his work at a nearby tailor shop to practicing. For now, Arikayn’s only audience is those who work in Ebrahimi’s carpentry shop. One night this summer, the band tore into its song “Stand Up,” which challenges the Taliban. “Stand up and don’t let the city be full of burqa-wearing women men again,” Ebrahimi sings. “And stop the sky from turning black from rom being full of lead.” AMIR VAHDATT (AP)

Most of the tracks are fatherand-son co-writes, but Neil wrote album opener “Prelude — Island of Peace,” with its uplifting, congenial choir, as a gift for Liam’s wedding. Finale “Hold Her Close,” meanwhile, is a lullaby with practical tips for parents. Students from a private school in Montgomery, Ala., got a surprise visit from Michael B. Jordan, who dropped in Monday when he spotted them exercising in the midday heat.
