the zoo said the new exhibit will open Saturday at the Small Mammal House. Visitors will be afforded an inside look at the lives and activities of naked mole rats. The exhibit also will include a new webcam that will offer virtual visitors a 24/7 look at the colony. The broadcast begins on Friday, the zoo said. MARTIN WEIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A portrait of John McCain is now on display at the National Portrait Gallery in memory of the Arizona senator, who died Saturday. ANIMALS Naked mole rats are about to get a new home at the National Zoo, which will have built-in electronic equipment for performing a task that defies the naked eye: telling these almost identical small, hairless mammals apart. All of the animals are about the same size (about 3 inches long), the zoo said Monday, and have the same pinkish skin, and large incisor teeth. So it’s no easy assignment to distinguish among these underground creatures. Similar to how players on sports teams wear numbers for easy identification, the zoo’s ID system uses numbers to keep track of the 17 naked mole rats. Electronic chips inserted under the animals’ skin already allow keepers equipped with chip readers to tell one naked mole rat from the others. In the zoo’s new mole rat digs, tunnels have been installed for the animals’ use. At one point in these passageways, the zoo has installed a chip reader. When the rats pass the reader, the zoo said, their personal information will show up on a screen

Calls rise for Wuerl to resign

THE DISTRICT

Settlement reached over rabbi’s hidden cameras

THE DISTRICT Catholic teachers on Tuesday added their voices to the escalating calls for the archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, to resign after a one-two punch of major scandals for the church implicated the cardinal in covering up sexual abuse. First, a massive investigation in Pennsylvania that documented abuse by 300 priests over the course of 70 years focused attention on Wuerl’s mixed record of dealing with abusive priests when he was bishop of Pittsburgh. And then Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, in a dramatic letter that is rattling the church, included an allegation that Wuerl knew about sexual misconduct committed by his predecessor Theodore McCarrick, of which Wuerl insists he was unaware. The misconduct in question involved young priests and seminarians, although this summer McCarrick was accused of harassing two minors as well. “We’re demanding that Cardinal Wuerl step down,” said Jack Devlin, one of more than 40 Catholic school teachers who demonstrated against Wuerl outside the annual back-to-school Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday morning. “How can I face my students, one, with this on the table, and two, when we tell them to speak up for what’s right,

The teachers outside the Basilica on Tuesday had posters printed with biblical quotes about seeking justice. “I’m here to support my students,” teacher Elizabeth Nolan said. “I want to stand up for them, and to show them that if there’s injustice, to stand up.” Nick Rosenberger, who teaches sixth- and seventh-graders, said he was thinking about what he would tell them when school starts today. “I can’t go back to them if all I’m doing is praying and asking for their forgiveness,” he said. Twice in two days, trains end up on wrong lines TRANSPORTATION Riders on a Franconia-bound Metro Blue Line train ended up at Courthouse on the Orange Line Tuesday morning after the train took the wrong route. It wasn’t the first time. On Monday, a Silver Line train ended up at Arlington Cemetery station on the Blue Line, the transit agency confirmed. Metro said the misrouting was caused by signal problems and that it has taken proper “corrective actions.” The agency said “there was no safety issue.” In Tuesday’s incident, Metro told riders to expect delays on the Blue Line after what it called a “train malfunction” at Rosslyn. The Blue Line train, bound for Franconia-Springfield, took the wrong route out of Rosslyn, and

In Monday’s incident, a WiehleReston-bound Silver Line train began heading toward Franconia-Springfield. Riders were offloaded at Arlington Cemetery station, the agency said. Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly said the agency was working on a fix Tuesday afternoon. Emails provided by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) from Social Security labor relations officials in Chicago and Dallas to local union leaders indicate the agency still considers Trump’s orders binding. “The agency is currently evaluating the judge’s ruling on the executive orders,” said a labor and employee relations supervisor in Chicago. “We will not make any changes until that evaluation is complete.” AFGE said local Department of Veterans Affairs officials also were told to delay following the court ruling until agency guidance is provided. Eric Shulman, legislative representative of AFGE’s National Council of Social Security Administration Field Operations, criticized Social Security’s refusal to immediately implement the court’s ruling, saying the agency “shows a deep-seated anti-union bias at all levels of management.” Then there’s the possibility Justice will appeal Jackson’s stinging rebuke of Trump. How annuities for surviving spouses are set MICHAEL S. WILLIAMSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Federal labor organizations won a major battle against President Trump when a U.S. District Court ruling Saturday overturned key sections of executive orders that substantially undermined government unions. But the lingering effects could continue to haunt the already mangled managementlabor relationship in an administration that has taken one step after another to alienate federal employees. First, will the administration obey the court order? The White House and its Office of Management and Budget are not saying. The Justice Department, which lost the court case, would only say the administration is considering its options. But there is a strong indication the administration will not obey the order, at least not yet. The response of the Social Security Administration is instructive. It demonstrates no hurry to follow the court’s decision. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson declared large portions of Trump’s orders “invalid” and prohibited “the President’s

collective bargaining power of unions and weaken their ability to represent workers. Jackson repeatedly pointed to the ways Trump’s orders violated the Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Act. Calling the department’s defense of the orders “akin to verbal jujitsu,” Jackson said “the strangeness of [the government’s] contention that, in the context of a statute that Congress has crafted to protect workers’ rights to goodfaith collective bargaining, Congress intended to confer upon the President the power

to issue executive orders that nullify those protections, cannot be overstated.” Will Justice appeal? So far, it is not saying. “We are disappointed in the ruling,” Andy Reuss, a department spokesman, said by email, “and are considering the appropriate next steps to ensure the President is able to fulfill his constitutional duties, run an effective and efficient government, and protect taxpayers from waste and abuse.” Follow Joe Davidson on Twitter @joedavidsonWP

Q. Do survivors of retired federal employees continue receiving annuity benefits? A. A standard survivor benefit is provided by default, but you could elect a smaller benefit, or none, if your spouse consents in writing. The default monthly survivor benefit under the Federal Employees Retirement System — which generally covers federal employees first hired in 1984 or after — is 50 percent of the retiree’s annuity. To pay for it, your annuity will be reduced by 10 percent. A benefit of 25 percent also is available, at a cost of a 5 percent reduction in your annuity. Under the older Civil Service Retirement System, the default survivor benefit is 55 percent of your annuity, although any lower amount can be chosen. Your annuity will be reduced by about 10 percent of the level you choose. Surviving spouse annuities are based on the retiree’s annuity before the reduction, including inflation adjustments since retirement. The benefit continues for the life of the surviving spouse unless he or she remarries before age 55. Survivors receiving annuities also can remain in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, with the same government contribution toward premiums, if they were covered at the retiree’s death. Trump says Google is ‘rigged’ Citing no evidence, he calls searches biased against conservatives

Ex-officer guilty in murder of black teenager

STR (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS President Trump lashed out at U.S. tech companies Tuesday, accusing Google and others of suppressing conservative voices and “hiding information” and good news. He cited no evidence for the claim, which echoes both his own attacks on the press and a conservative talking point. Google, which operates the world’s most popular search engine, responded by saying: “We never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment.” Trump tweeted before dawn: “This is a very serious situation - will be addressed!” Hours later, Larry Kudlow, the president’s top economic adviser, said the White House is “taking a look” at whether Google searches should be subject to some government regulation. Trump has made similar complaints before, but he carried it a step further Tuesday. “Google search results for ‘Trump News’ shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal?” He added, without evidence, that “96% of results on ‘Trump News’ are from National LeftWing Media, very dangerous.” In response, Google said its

Genesis of a gripe In all likelihood, President Trump’s Tuesday morning tweets were referring to a story posted Saturday in PJ Media, a conservative blog, alleging that 96 percent of Google search results for news about Trump were from “left-leaning news outlets.” The author of the story acknowledged that her methods are “not scientific.” Perhaps ironically, the PJ Media story came up in the first several results for “Trump News” when a Washington Post reporter performed a Google search for the phrase minutes after the president’s tweet. The top news result Tuesday morning listed under a Google search for “Trump News” was from Fox News. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

most authoritative, informative and relevant. Many factors help decide the initial results, including how much time people spend on a page, how many other pages link to it, how well it’s designed and more. A search for “why is the sky blue?” for example, yields initial results from NASA, universities and Scientific American. Similarly, entering “Trump” and clicking the “news” tab will produce results from mainstream media outlets that large swaths of the population tend to trust. That is even though Trump has derided some of these outlets as “fake news.” DA R L EN E S U P ERV I L L E A N D B A R B A R A ORTUTAY (AP)

DALLAS A white former police officer was convicted of murder on Tuesday for fatally shooting an unarmed black teenager when he fired into a car full of teenagers leaving a house party in suburban Dallas. Dallas County jurors were not swayed by the claim of former Balch Springs police officer Roy Oliver, above, that he feared for his partner’s life when he fired into the vehicle. The gunfire killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. Gasps echoed around the courtroom as the verdict was read. After the jury left, Edwards’ relatives sobbed and hugged prosecutors, waved their hands in the air and proclaimed, “Thank you, Jesus!” Oliver and his partner, Tyler Gross, were responding to a report of underage drinking at a house party when the shooting occurred in April 2017. Oliver was fired from the Balch Springs Police Department days later. Oliver testified during the trial that he opened fire after seeing the car move toward his partner. But Gross told jurors he didn’t fear for his life. Prosecutors described Oliver as looking for a reason to kill. Oliver was found not guilty on two lesser charges Tuesday stemming from the shooting. Odell Edwards, Jordan’s father, said he was thankful for the jury’s decision. Experts say it’s extremely rare for officers to be convicted of murder for shootings while they were on duty. A federal judge on Tuesday delayed the opening of Paul Manafort’s trial in the District on charges of conspiracy and money laundering by a week, to Sept. 24, after his lawyers said they need more time to prepare after just finishing his trial in Alexandria. Attorneys for President Trump’s former campaign chairman also said that they will ask today to move the trial to an as-yet-unnamed venue because of pretrial publicity.

The owner of a Texas company that makes untraceable 3D-printed guns said at a news conference Tuesday that he has begun selling the blueprints through his website to anyone who wants to make one, despite a federal court order barring him from posting the plans online. Cody Wilson said he had already received nearly 400 orders. He said he’ll sell the plans for as little as a penny to anyone in the United States who wants them. (AP)

PUERTO RICO Puerto Rico’s governor raised the island’s official death toll from Hurricane Maria from 64 to 2,975 on Tuesday after an independent study found that the number of people who succumbed in the desperate, sweltering months after the storm

had been severely undercounted. The new estimate of nearly 3,000 dead in the six months after Maria devastated the island in September 2017 and knocked out the electrical grid was made by researchers with the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University.

more deaths than normal in the three months after the storm. The number of deaths from September 2017 to February 2018 was 22 percent higher than the same period in previous years, said Lynn Goldman, dean of the Milken Institute. The number of dead has political implications for the Trump administration, which was accused of responding halfheartedly to the disaster. When the toll first stood at 16, President Trump marveled over the relatively small loss of life. DANICA COTO (AP)

Mom: Bullying led to child’s suicide DENVER Before Jamel Myles died, he said that kids at his Colorado elementary school had told him to commit suicide, his mother said. Jamel’s mother, Leia Pierce, told Fox affiliate KDVR that her 9-year-old son had told her he was gay and that when he returned to school from summer break, he wanted to come out to his peers. On Thursday — days after Jamel started the fourth grade at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School — police responded to a “medical incident” at his Denverarea home and rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Denver police said Monday in a statement to The Washington Post. Although the circumstances surrounding Jamel’s death remain unclear, police said the medical examiner ruled his death a suicide. Jamel’s mother told KDVR that she believes that her son killed himself in part because he was bullied at school — and she wants to raise awareness about how damaging it can be to a child’s self-esteem. Authorities and school district officials have not confirmed that bullying was a factor in Jamel’s death but have said that the case is still under investigation.

“I’m just sad he didn’t come to me. ... I’m so upset that he thought that was his option.” LEIA PIERCE, talking about her 9-year-old son Jamel Myles, who died Thursday. Jamel had recently come out as gay to his classmates.

In a statement late Monday, Denver Public Schools spokesman Will Jones said the district is “deeply committed to ensuring that all members of the school community are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or transgender status.” Jamel’s mother told KDVR that her son told her that he was gay weeks before he returned to classes at Shoemaker Elementary. Pierce said he seemed scared. But, she said, he later decided to tell his classmates because he was “proud.” Denver Public Schools said crisis counselors are available to help students and staff deal with the loss. The president as pariah Often unwelcome and unwilling, Trump rejects participating in many traditions of the office

Worldwide total for gun deaths hits 250K yearly

WIN MCNAMEE (GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS Shunned at two funerals and one (royal) wedding so far, President Trump may be well on his way to becoming president non grata. The latest snub comes in the form of the upcoming funeral for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz: Before his death, the senator made it clear he did not want Trump to attend. That the feeling is mutual — Trump nixed issuing a statement that praised McCain as a “hero” — only underscores the myriad ways Trump has rejected the norms of his office and, increasingly, has been rejected in turn. Less than two years into his first term, Trump has often come to occupy the role of pariah — both unwelcome and unwilling to perform the basic rituals and ceremonies of the presidency, from public displays of mourning to cultural ceremonies. In addition to being pointedly not invited to McCain’s funeral and memorial service later this week — while former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will both eulogize the Arizona Republican — Trump was quietly asked to stay away from former first lady Barbara Bush’s funeral earlier this year. “We’re not talking about a president going and having a rally in a state that voted against him,” said Tim Naftali, a presidential historian at New York University. “We’re talking about a president who can’t even go and participate in a ritual where presidents are usually welcomed, and that is one of the consequences of his having defined the presidency in a sectarian way.” Trump’s conspicuous absences

President Trump, who was asked not to attend Sen. McCain’s funeral, proclaims some snubs as badges of honor.

at McCain’s and Barbara Bush’s funerals offer perhaps the starkest examples of the ways in which Trump finds himself ostracized from some of the duties other presidents performed as almost de facto aspects of their job. “It is a tearing of the fabric of the presidency that he’s not invited, but I understand why he’s not invited because he’s personalized the presidency in a way no previous occupant of the presidency has done,” Naftali said. “Donald Trump has never accepted the fact that he is the head of state.” A senior White House official rejected the notion of Trump as persona non grata, saying for example that it is not the norm for sitting presidents to attend the funerals of former first ladies, in part because of the disruption it causes. Obama, for instance, did not attend the funeral of former first ladies Betty Ford or Nancy Reagan when he was in office.

Trump bucks tradition President Trump has found himself excluded from — or opting out of — certain traditional events. (TWP) Kennedy Center Honors: Trump skipped last year’s event after three of the five honorees said they would or might boycott the White House reception pegged to the celebration. Hosting champions: In June, Trump hastily disinvited the entire Philadelphia Eagles team from a White House event after growing frustrated that, to protest some of his policies, the team planned to send a small delegation of players.

Instead, Michelle Obama went in his place, much as Melania Trump attended Bush’s funeral. In many cases, the rejection is mutual. Trump — who prefers the comforts of his Trumpbranded resorts and restaurants — rarely ventures far from his cosseted bubble.

Pope Francis faces calls for resignation over Catholic Church sex abuse scandals

“We’ve kind of elected this apex predator, and you don’t sit T. rex down at the dinner table,” said Alex Castellanos, a Republican media consultant and strategist. “I think civilized society doesn’t want him behaving crudely at the dinner table, and he has no interest in their pretensions.” At his recent rallies, Trump has taken to expounding on his lack of acceptance by the “elites,” proclaiming it a badge of honor. “The thing to realize is that Donald Trump’s base revels in him playing the transgressive jerk,” said Rick Wilson, author of “Everything Trump Touches Dies” and a veteran of Republican campaigns. “You know what is making Donald Trump the craziest right now is he’s not the center of attention. He’s crawling the damn walls because they’re running story after story on John McCain and he hates it because he’s not the center of attention.” ASHLEY PARKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

HEALTH Gun deaths worldwide total about 250,000 yearly, and the United States is among just six countries that make up half of those fatalities, a study found. The results from one of the most comprehensive analyses of firearm deaths reveal “a major public health problem for humanity,” according to an editorial published with the study Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Although recent headlines make it seem like gun killings are surging globally, the new figures tell a more nuanced story. Researchers counted about 209,000 gun deaths in 1990 compared with 251,000 in 2016. The average rate, about 4 per 100,000 people, was mostly unchanged. Two-thirds of the deaths in 2016 were homicides, although the U.S. is among wealthy countries where suicides by gun outnumber gun killings, the study found. There were notable increases in gun deaths in many of the 195 countries involved in the study, particularly in Central and South America, where the rates reached nearly 40 per 100,000 in some places. Researchers said the drug trade and economic instability may have contributed. Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Venezuela are the countries that with the U.S. contributed to half the deaths in the study. LINDSEY TANNER (AP)

Robert Griffin III will get the majority of snaps against the Redskins in the preseason finale.

QB UNDER PRESSURE

BRYNN ANDERSON (AP)

Beckham deal puts focus on Eli

Last stand for Griffin

Ex-Redskins QB must impress against his old team Thursday to win spot with Ravens NFL Redskins coach Jay Gruden is so focused on determining the final pieces of his own team that he doesn’t seem to have taken time to appreciate the irony that his defense might play a role in determining the future of his first quarterback in Washington: Robert Griffin III. Griffin is fighting for his NFL life, trying hard to make the Ravens as their third quarterback. Thursday night’s preseason game against the Redskins in Baltimore will likely belong to him, giving him every chance to dazzle coach John Harbaugh and Ravens executives and make it hard to cut him in favor of retaining just two quarterbacks. Gruden, who has said he won’t

watch much Ravens game film in preparation for the game, didn’t talk much about Griffin this week, other than to say he believes there is a place for a player like RGIII in the NFL. In a sense, Griffin is just another player to him, not the quarterback whose injuries and inconsistency doomed the Redskins to a 4-12 record and a last-place finish in the NFC East in Gruden’s first season in 2014. “Anyone who can run and throw is very important nowadays,” Gruden said. “Mobility and the zone reads and all that stuff, but it just depends on the roster and who he’s competing with.” Three years ago this month, Gruden declared Kirk Cousins

Uphill climb for RGIII No. 1 QB Joe Flacco has been remarkably durable in his career, and the Ravens plan to get Lamar Jackson into games this year, so it will be difficult for Robert Griffin III to make the team. Flacco has played all 16 games in all but one of his 10 NFL seasons. The Baltimore Sun reported that the Ravens haven’t carried three quarterbacks since 2009. (EXPRESS)

as Washington’s starter, leading to an awkward year of Griffin patrolling the sidelines in street clothes before he joined the Browns and suffered another rash of injuries and poor performance. This year, Griffin isn’t competing against anyone as much

as he is competing against the NFL norm of keeping two quarterbacks. With Joe Flacco as the entrenched starter and firstround pick Lamar Jackson as the future, the Ravens don’t necessarily need a third quarterback. In Baltimore’s first four preseason games, Griffin completed 27 of 41 passes for 243 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. That’s not enough to guarantee a roster spot. Speaking to reporters last week, however, Harbaugh lobbied for Griffin. “ You wa nt to keep your good players, and he’s a very good player,” said Harbaugh, who noted that the ultimate decision rests with general ma nager Ozzie Newsome.

When the Giants benched two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning in November, it seemed the quarterback’s tenure in New York was ending. Instead, the Giants have gone all-in on giving Manning, 37, a last, best chance for success. Coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese are gone. New GM Dave Gettleman used the No. 2 overall pick in the draft on running back Saquon Barkley instead of a successor at QB. When star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. got a five-year, $95 million extension Monday, the doubling-down on Manning was complete. Now it’s up to Manning — who went 3-12 as a starter with just 19 TD passes and 13 interceptions last year — to make it work. (TWP)

Fitzgerald will give a eulogy for McCain

Goalkeeper Bill Hamid returned to D.C. United after logging just three matches in nine months playing overseas.

Hamid went to Europe but left his heart in D.C. United goalie kept tabs on his MLS club during stint in Danish league D.C. UNITED Last fall, Bill Hamid severed ties with the only professional club he had known. After coming up through D.C. United’s youth academy and spending eight seasons as one of the top goalkeepers in MLS, the Annandale native left his childhood team for Danish club Midtjylland. But after logging just three matches in nine months overseas, Hamid returned to United on a year-and-a-half loan earlier this month. When Hamid was reintroduced at a news conference, D.C. coach Ben Olsen said, “It was as if he never left.” The short duration of Hamid’s stay in Denmark is only part of the reason that rang true. Hamid, 27, stayed in touch with United general manager Dave Kasper, exchanging text messages every month or so. He also stayed up until the wee hours of the morning in Scandinavia so

he could watch United games. When Wayne Rooney visited D.C. in May ahead of his summer signing, Hamid took the train down from Philadelphia — where he had an off-day from U.S. national team camp — and let the English star pick his brain. “I’m thankful to the club for caring about me and always keeping up to date with what was going on,” Hamid said. “And I always kept up to date with what was going on over here.” Hamid has conceded just two goals in three matches since his return, recording the team’s first shutout since April in a 2-0 win over New England on Aug. 19. The 2014 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year is set to play his fourth straight game when United (7-10-6) hosts the Philadelphia Union (11-11-3) tonight at Audi Field (8, WJLA 24/7 News). “He’s one of the best goalkeepers this league has ever seen,” Olsen said. “It’s been an up-anddown year and a half for Bill, and he wants to prove that he’s the goalkeeper he was.” Re-establishing that status

would boost both United’s playoff chances and Hamid’s prospects on the U.S. men’s team. Long seen as a potential successor to Tim Howard, Hamid cited his desire to face stiffer competition and break through as a national team regular when he was making the move to Denmark. Hamid has made three appearances for the U.S. over the past year, but his lack of playing time for Midtjylland stifled his chances in a wide-open competition for the No. 1 job on the national team. Although he considered options in Europe and Asia when he decided to leave Denmark, the 6-foot-3 shot-stopper saw value in returning to a growing league and a locker room where he’s a known commodity “With the expectation of being a national team player, you have to play regularly,” Hamid said. “The quality, the diversity of players, the coaching — from top to bottom, [MLS] is extremely strong. … I thought it was a big opportunity to come back here and play in a league of this caliber.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will be one of six people to speak at the funeral for Sen. John McCain on Thursday in Phoenix. ESPN reported that McCain’s wife, Cindy, invited him to speak at the service a couple of months ago, and that remarks from former Vice President Joe Biden will follow Fitzgerald’s. “It’s truly one of the greatest honors of my life,” Fitzgerald told ESPN. The receiver and the senator had formed a tight bond after McCain, who died of brain cancer at age 81 on Saturday, invited Fitzgerald on a tour of the U.S. Capitol. Two other athletes, former Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzalez and former Coyotes forward Shane Doan, will be pallbearers. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK

Neil Finn and son live the dream

EBRAHIM NOROOZI (AP)

Formed in 2013, the Tehran-based rock band Arikayn is comprised of Afghan refugees.

Playing at the margins An Afghan rock band in Iran copes with struggles shared by millions of refugees MUSIC The band gathers in a small carpentry shop on the outskirts of Tehran, with sawdust still in the air but the buzzing of the jigsaws now exchanged for the soft feedback of an amplifier. Hakim Ebrahimi opens with the first dreamy notes of “Afghanistan,” the sound of their Metallica-inspired rock ballad filling the air. The four rockers that make up the band, known as Arikayn, are Afghan refugees, and their struggles mirror those of millions of other Afghans who have fled to Iran during decades of war. They once had to sneak through a Taliban checkpoint to play a gig in their home country, and they face discrimination in Iran, but they say that hasn’t

stopped them from playing the music they love. “This is very hard for all of us, but when we play a song, we become the person that we want to be,” bassist Mohammad Rezai says. More than 3 million Afghans, including over 1 million who entered without legal permission, live in the Islamic Republic, according to United Nations estimates. Three of the band’s four original members were born in Iran, including female guitarist and vocalist Soraya Hosseini, drummer Akbar Bakhtiary and Rezai. Ebrahimi came to Iran as a child. They formed the band Arikayn, which is Dari for “Lantern,” in 2013. The band members say they

Mettle with metal Arikayn’s music recalls Metallica — not the speed-metal shredding of “Master of Puppets” but rather the introspective ballad of “Nothing Else Matters.” Hakim Ebrahimi, who said his icon is Metallica frontman James Hetfield, evokes his guitar work in Arikayn’s song “Afghanistan.” A.V.

were turned away from a oncepopular Tehran concert series because they were immigrants. The band also must contend with hard-liners who view Western culture as corrupt and object to women performing in public. At one of only two Tehran concerts the band gave, at the University of Tehran, Hosseini said she was not

allowed to play her guitar onstage. Financial reality also has come crashing down on the group, as some Afghans in Iran begin to leave the country over its economic problems. Bakhtiary, the band’s drummer, left Iran along with other Afghan migrants hoping to reach Europe. Rezai, the band’s bassist, prefers his work at a nearby tailor shop to practicing. For now, Arikayn’s only audience is those who work in Ebrahimi’s carpentry shop. One night this summer, the band tore into its song “Stand Up,” which challenges the Taliban. “Stand up and don’t let the city be full of burqa-wearing women men again,” Ebrahimi sings. “And stop the sky from turning black from rom being full of lead.” AMIR VAHDATT (AP)

“Lightsleeper,” which came out Friday, is the result of a crowded house at the Finn residence. The album principals, father Neil and son Liam, get the rest of the family involved — mother Sharon, son Elroy, nephew Harper. With their help, “Lightsleeper” provides dreamy atmospheres, multi-section song structures and hazy shades of melody. Most of the tracks are fatherand-son co-writes, but Neil wrote album opener “Prelude — Island of Peace,” with its uplifting, congenial choir, as a gift for Liam’s wedding. Finale “Hold Her Close,” meanwhile, is a lullaby with practical tips for parents. Ideal for late-night listening, “Lightsleeper” shows that with such talent at hand, it makes sense to keep it all in the family. PABLO GORONDI ONDI (AP)

Lauryn Hill denies song theft claims

Lauryn Hill on Monday denied claims ms from producer Robert Glasper that she had stolen music. Earlier this month, Glasper told “The Madd Hatta Morning Show” in Houston that Hill took credit for other writers’ material on her 1998 album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” In an essay on Medium, Hill responded: “You may be able to make suggestions, but you can’t write FOR me. We all now know social media can be a force for bad. But it also can be a force for good — and not just because sharing cat videos makes us happy. In “Ultraviolet,” a Polish crime drama, amateur detectives use digital tools to solve murders written off by the police. A hit in its homeland,

the show is now streaming on Netflix with English subtitles. The main character is Ola Serafin (Marta Nieradkiewicz), a 30-year-old with careworn eyes. She had been living in London with her husband but has left him and is back in Lodz, earning zlotys by driving the Polish version of Uber. One night, she sees a body fall from an overpass. Ola thinks the victim was pushed, but no one believes her. Then

trace the victim’s T-shirt to a gym and find her picture and name. But these cybersleuths also recognize that people can be smarter than the internet.

“The dent in the car will speak volumes,” says Henryk (Marek Kalita), a father figure to Ola who just happens to be an expert on dents made by jumpers versus people who are pushed. The show isn’t the perfect crime procedural — a new whodunit each episode can lead to predictable outcomes. But the characters are offbeat enough to pique interest, and the writers slip in plenty of sly jokes. In an episode about the murder of a man who lives in a smart house, the artificial intelligence voice reacts to his death by stating: “He is inoperable.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

trending “Stop whining about these men’s redemption. They’ve literally spent two seconds away from the public eye and y’all want us to be like, ‘Yes, that’s enough.’ No. Absolutely not.” @NICOLEFROIO, tweeting after comedian Louis C.K. — who was accused of and

admitted to sexual misconduct last year — performed a stand-up set Sunday in New York City. Many were upset not only that C.K. received a standing ovation upon taking the stage, but that some saw his taking less than 10 months away from the public eye as a sufficient “punishment” for his actions.

@ITSAFOST, reacting to photos from the set of the third “John Wick” movie in which star Keanu Reeves rides a horse during an altercation with an assailant on a motorcycle. Reeves often gets the meme treatment for his role in the campy franchise centered on a former assassin who goes on a killing spree to get revenge for the murder of his dog.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You must be willing to do more than you are asked to do, and none of it is likely to come as a surprise. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Central issues must be given the attention they deserve today. Don’t hide from that which affects you directly. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) An issue is resolved today just as another comes to light and demands more from you than you might have expected. Be ready to jump in. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You will have to pay attention to where your money is coming from — and where it is going. You can strike a bargain that others cannot. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may feel someone is threatening your independence today. The only way to be certain is to raise the issue directly.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Someone you’ve known for some time is likely to surprise you with a decision you’ve not been able to make — yet.
