ATF Head to Step Down Melson reassigned in fallout over gun operation gone awry MWi^_d]jed
SEPTEMBER 5TH
The ATF head has been reassigned amid an investigation into a controversial U.S. gun-trafficking operation, part of a broader shakeup at the Justice Department in which the U.S. attorney in Phoenix also stepped down, off icials said Tuesday. Kennet h E. Melson, acting director of t he Bureau of AlcoMelson hol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, will become a senior adviser on forensic science in the department’s Office of Legal Policy. He will be replaced as acting director at ATF by B. Todd Jones, the U.S.

attorney in Minnesota, the department said in a statement. The changes follow months of controversy over the agency’s “Operation Fast and Furious.” That now-defunct operation targeted Mexican gun traffickers but ultimately was the focus of a congressional investigation after a Border Patrol agent was killed in an incident in which “Fast and Furious” guns were found at the scene. Congressional Republicans are investigating the operation and are
pushing to learn whether senior Justice Department officials were involved. The department’s inspector general is also investigating. In a sign of the continuing fallout, Dennis Burke, the U.S. attorney in Phoenix who worked closely with ATF and prov ided lega l guidance for “Fast a n d F u r i ou s ,” has resigned, the Burke department said Tuesday. He is being replaced by Ann Scheel. An assistant U.S. Attorney in Phoenix, Emory Hurley, who helped oversee “Fast and Furious,” is being transferred out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s criminal division and into the civil division. The multiple moves amounted to an extraordinary shake-up for a Justice Department that has been under fire for the gun-trafficking probe. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Pfizer Inc.’s just-approved drug Xalkori, the first new medicine in more than six years for deadly lung cancer, proves the value of precisely targeting rare diseases linked to gene variants, cancer specialists and Pfizer executives said Tuesday. The drug was approved Friday in the U.S. along with a companion diagnostic test for just a small subset of lung cancer patients. It epitomizes drugmakers’ new strategy of developing very expensive but effective medicines for relatively few patients to replace the blockbusters for the masses now getting competition from generic drugs. Rebels Issue Ultimatum Opposition demands Gadhafi stronghold yield or face attack >[_i^W" B_XoW Libyan rebels say they’re closing in on Moammar Gadhafi and issued an ultimatum Tuesday to regime loyalists in the fugitive dictator’s hometown of Sirte, his main remaining bastion: Surrender this weekend or face an attack.
“Gadhafi is now f leeing — and we have a good idea where he is,” said Ali Tarhouni, a top rebel leader, without elaborating. “We don’t have any doubt that we will catch him.” The rebels, tightening their grip on Libya after a military blitz, also demanded that Algeria return Gadhafi’s wife and three of his children who fled there Monday. There has been speculation that Gadhafi is seeking refuge in the heavily militarized town of Sirte or one of the other remaining regime strongholds, among them the towns of Bani Walid or Sabha. Rebel fighters were converging on Sirte, some 250 miles east of Tripoli. The rebels gave pro-Gadhafi forces there a deadline of Saturday — the day after the end of the three-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr — to complete negotiations and surrender. From Invisible to Infamous Crittenton’s arrest adds a tragic twist to the Wizards’ ’09 handguns incident

9^Wh][i 7]W_dij 9h_jj[djed Javaris Crittenton, left, was in police custody on Tuesday after being arrested at a Southern California airport to board a Monday night flight to Atlanta, where his lawyer said he would go to surrender in a murder case. Police in Atlanta had obtained a murder warrant for Crittenton in the Aug. 19 shooting of 22-year-old Jullian Jones, a mother of four young children, as she was walking with two men. Police believe one of the men with her was the target. Police spokesman Carlos Campos said the motive appeared to be retaliation for a robbery in April, in which Crittenton was a victim. (AP)

On one of Gilbert Arenas’ final nights as a Washington Wizard, he stood in the corridor leading from the locker room to the floor — fearful of being booed almost a year after he and a teammate had irrevocably tarnished themselves and a franchise by bringing guns to Verizon Center. Asked whether he had spoken to Javaris Crittenton since they 8o C_a[ were both suspendM_i[ ed for the remainder of the 2009-2010 NBA season and Arenas had spent 30 days in a halfway house, Arenas replied, “No, but I heard he became more hard.” More hard, he explained, meant “more gangsta.” “You know, like some people turn over a new leaf when something bad like that changes their life. I heard Javaris went the other way — he became more ’hood, more hardened in that way. I don’t know if that’s the case, but that’s what I heard.” Before his arrest Monday night, Crittenton had been on the lam for several days, wanted by Atlanta police in connection with an Aug. 19 murder. He was arrested after checking in for a red-eye flight in Orange County, Calif. Shuttled to a Los Angeles police station, he was booked on suspicion of being a fugitive from justice. The mere notion of Crittenton as a person of primary interest in the death of another by gunshot instantly has to cast the events of December 2009 in a more disturbing light. All of us have probably run into
D.C. officials used this gun as evidence in Gilbert Arenas’ trial in 2009.
D.C police never determined whether Javaris Crittenton’s gun was loaded during his locker room confrontation with Gilbert Arenas almost 20 months ago. Two days after Crittenton grew tired of Arenas’ clowning on the team plane and threatened to shoot him in the knee if he didn’t pay off a card-playing debt, Arenas responded by laying out four unloaded guns on a towel in the locker room with a note that read, “PICK 1.” Two witnesses said Crittenton chambered a round in his own revolver and was thinking of pulling the trigger. He had live ammunition, they believed, and might not be bluffing. Unsure of Crittenton’s frame of mind, players quickly fled the locker room. (T WP)
a serious-as-a-heart-attack individual once or twice in our lives, someone we just weren’t sure about. As Gilbert Arenas’ father said in a telephone interview, “I remember guys going to their bag to get something and everybody went running from the park. There was always one guy you didn’t want to agitate too much. Or else.” But was Crittenton really that guy? The hard part today for everyone who spent time around him: They never saw that side. Javaris Crittenton, murder suspect? This is a tough one to digest, especially for many of us who hung on Arenas’ every utterance during the ordeal and after he returned from his suspension. It was all-Gilbert, all the time then. Crittenton was the forgotten counterpart, a foil for another mean-spirited Gil prank gone awry. We were so worried whether Arenas’ All-Star career could ever be resurrected — whether he was going to be OK after he pocketed, oh, $20 million per year — that we forgot to check on the guy who very possibly kissed his NBA career goodbye that day. Less than two years ago, Crittenton laid his head on the pillows of Four Seasons and Ritz Calrtons. Today, he’s in custody in a homicide case. A mother of four is gone. And the hoop dreams of a bright young kid, who as a teen once lofted alley-oop passes to a gangly Dwight Howard for bedazzling dunks, are all but dead. What a vicious cycle. From nothing to something. And back to nothing again. What a sinister omen those guns in the locker room may turn out to have been. For those of us fixated on only the famous falling from grace over the past 20 months, who focused on Arenas and forgot Crittenton, tragic doesn’t begin to cover it. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Re-Signing Zim Makes Sense Isn’t re-signing Ryan Zimmerman to a long-term, bank-busting, career-long contract a no-brainer for the Nationals? While implementing The Plan, the Nats have been . . . let’s call it fiscally conservative. Recently, they’ve opened their wallets — no truth to the rumor that moths flew out — to pay large sums to a lot of youngsters, and Jayson Werth. The jury’s still out on those moves, but 8o JhWY[[ there’s no question >Wc_bjed paying Zimmerman will pay dividends. Right now, he is the Nats’ marquee player, without question. Stephen Strasburg could become that guy — but even in a perfect world, Strasburg will pitch only every five days. Bryce Harper could become that guy — but he’s still a work in progress, and his day of contract reckoning is well down the road. Zimmerman’s isn’t. He is eligible for free agency after the 2013 season. We’ve seen what happens when teams don’t lock up their Zimmermans early. The Nats want to avoid an Albert Pujols-type situ-

All-Star Ryan Zimmerman will be eligible for free agency after the 2013 season.
P_cc[hcWd ?i _d =eeZ 9ecfWdo Ryan Zimmerman could be a George Brett-like figure for the Nats — a Hall of Famer synonymous with a franchise. Brett, left, came up with the Royals in 1973, their first season in Kaufmann Stadium. Zimmerman came up in 2005, the Nats’ first year in Washington. In Brett’s first six full seasons with the Royals, he averaged 145 games. Zimmerman, in his first six full seasons with the Nats, is averaging 133. Through Monday, Zimmerman is hitting .289 with a .482 slugging percentage. He averages 25 homers and 96 RBI a season. Brett’s career average of .305 is obviously superior, but his slugging percentage is very comparable (.487), his home runs are fewer (19) and his 96 RBI average matches Zimmerman’s. (T WP)
ation because if Zimmerman hits the market, all bets are off. Zimmerman told The Washington Post that if he made it to that final season without an extension,
there wouldn’t be a zero-percent chance of re-signing, but “If after your first six years, you’ve produced and worked hard enough to become one of the top players
other teams would want to pursue, you want to make them compete against each other. Hopefully, it won’t get to that.” The Nats should make sure it doesn’t. “Face of the franchise” is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot, but keeping a superstar player on your roster for his entire career is good business. Think of every memorable Nats moment since 2005. How many of them didn’t involve Zimmerman? Let’s see, there was Strasburg’s first start . . . and I’m out. Zimmerman has had more walkoff homers than Werth has had homers this season — OK, not really, but doesn’t it seem that way? For a franchise trying to establish an identity, it’s important to be able to bring back a guy in 20 years who was here almost from the very beginning and spent his entire career in Washington. One reason Jim Thome’s 600th home run was underplayed in the eyes of many is that he spent his 21-year career with five teams. He’s still a first-ballot Hall of Famer, of course, but he’ll have to make a decision about the cap to wear on his bust. Zimmerman, too, looks like a surefire Hall of Famer. What a tremendous loss it would be for the club if he went in wearing anything but the Curly W. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

When I dropped by to help her pack, I couldn’t believe what I saw — boxes with bars inside them on which to hang clothes. Me: Ahhh! What are these?! Erin: Wardrobe boxes. Me: Did you make them? Erin: No, U-Haul did. Me: It’s a closet in the 8o AWj^[h_d[ box! 8eob[ Erin: Yes. Me: Does everyone know these exist? Erin: Apparently, not everyone. How did I overlook this simple, brilliant invention? They’re so popular that U-Haul sells three models. The Shorty ($8) is ideal for shirts or skirts. The Grand ($12) offers two feet of full-length closet space. The EZ ($10, all at Uhaul.com) is stackable and doesn’t even require tape to seal it! I moved this spring with the help of one mover (my mom) and normal boxes. All my clothes acquired wrinkles, leading to a week-long ironing binge. I’m kicking myself for the oversight. The Mesopotamians must have felt the same way when they saw that guy down the street in a chariot.
A few years back, when Lil Wayne was going around calling himself the “best rapper alive,” he really was. The rhymes that came spilling out of his throat were complex and colorful and wildly charismatic. The guy could stack metaphors like the teeth of a closing zipper. In an accelerating digital age, he was a rapper — the rapper — moving at the speed of life. Now, with his disappointing ninth album, “Tha Carter IV,” the 28-yearold has taken his foot off the accelerator. And the timing isn’t good. “Tha Carter IV” comes after a botched leftturn of an album, his disastrous 2010 rap-rock experiment “Rebirth,” and a career-stalling prison sentence at Rikers Island, where he served eight months on weapons charges. But who didn’t expect a postprison opus when Wayne dropped the album’s dazzling lead single “6 Foot 7 Foot” back in December? Over a thundering, chattering beat, he croaked out rapidfire boasts, reasserting himself as hip-hop’s triumphal outsider superhero: “So misunderstood, but what’s the world without enigma?” Nothing else on “Tha Carter IV” comes within miles of this tune — and Wayne seems to

know it. He suffers some Freudian slippage on the second track, “Blunt Blowin,” which mutates Aerosmith’s “Dream On” into a club-friendly shape. “I stick to the script/I memorize the lines,” he raps. “Cause life is a movie that I’ve seen too many times.” It’s hard to flush those words out of your head for the remaining 16 tracks. Wayne sounds over it throughout, imitating the laziest cadences of the acolytes signed to his label, Young Money. Imaginative couplets spring up as if by accident. “I touch the sky/Get the clouds out of my fingernails,” he declares over the strange jazz of “Nightmares of the Bottom.” It’s the kind of dreamy image that used to overrun his verses. Here, it feels like an Easter egg. J^W The biggest whiff 9Whj[h ?L comes with “PresiLil Wayne dent Carter,” an Oval Office fantasy that tingles with promise. The music is gorgeous but still offers enough sonic space for Wayne to flood the proceedings with ruminations on power, prestige and politics. Instead of punching the gas, he spins his wheels. His verses are nothing more than roundabout boasts, rote tough talk and a few malformed policy initiatives. “I change the stars on the flag into crosses,” he raps. “So now, instead of pledge, we pray.” Then he congratulates himself with a stonery giggle. Let’s pray he hasn’t settled into mediocrit y for good. C H R I S R I C H A R D S (THE WASHINGTON POST )

There are some big issues today, in terms of resource depletion and environmental problems, and the book is about the acceleration of all these crises. I think writing a book is really daunting. If you think about having to write 300 pages, you just want to kill yourself because it sounds so hard. The prime-time broadcasts will still use that traditional formula of human-interest features and taped competition, but it will no longer be the first chance viewers have to watch who wins the gold. Former NBC Sports Group head Dick Ebersol, who resigned in May, was adamant that showing events live during the day would hurt ratings. But to Mark Lazarus, who replaced Ebersol atop NBC Sports Group, the sports fan of today demands immediacy — and that doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive to highly stylized broadcasts aired when people are most likely to be sitting in front of the TV. “I believe in that, and that will be some philosophical shift from my predecessor,” Lazarus says. And it has informed novels and movies including “Frankenstein” and “The Fly.” Now the Science Channel explores some questionable experiments with the new series “Dark Matters: Twisted but True,” hosted by “Fringe” star John Noble. Using computer graphics, “Dark” revisits some of the more gruesome and questionable chapters in scientific history, including interspecies crossbreeding, official zombie hunts and that old horror movie chestnut, the head transplant. Fef 9kbjkh[ Freeze your own icy treats to keep sweet and cool during the last days of summer It’s counterintuitive, but Popsicles started out as a winter surprise. Around 1900, 11-year-old San Franciscan Frank Epperson left a fruity soda outside during atypical subzero temperatures. The next day, he discovered the ice pop formula now mass-marketed as the Popsicle. Since then, countless kids have licked and liked pops. Though Epperson trademarked the name (hence why you risk a lawsuit if you don’t call your homemade ones just pops), the icy desserts have matured from syrupy and sugar-infused to sophisticated. Think combos such as spicy pineapple or Carolina sweet tea. “The key to a good pop is fresh
ingredients,” says Brian Sykora, coowner of D.C.’s Pleasant Pops food truck. “We buy our fruit and dairy locally and rotate through ingredients based on season. Now we’re using peaches and cantaloupe.” Sykora and business partner Roger Horowitz started Pleasant Pops in 2010, selling versions of the traditional Mexican paleta, a bar on a stick formed of fresh frozen fruit. The duo hawk theirs from a food truck that travels daily from McPherson Square to Mount Pleasant to Georgetown, spreading savory pops such
as cucumber-chile and sweet ones like chongos, which mesh cream and cinnamon. DIYing ’sicles is easy. Simply puree fruit, veggies and flavorings in a blender, keeping in mind that softer, riper produce works best. If you’re using harder fruits or veggies — say, apples — cook them before blending. Then, add sugar (for a richer flavor, saute fruit with sugar first). Then, pour the liquid into molds (see below for ideas) and freeze for four to five hours. (See recipe, right, for guidance.)
Pops look cheerier when they are shaped like a robot or boat, thanks to Cuisipro’s molds ($10 for six, Hill’s Kitchen, 713 D St. SE; 202-543-1997).
Fany Gerson, author of “Paletas: Authentic Recipes for Mexican Ice Pops, Shaved Ice & Aguas Frescas” ($17, Ten Speed Press), recommends adjusting the temperature of your freezer to the coldest setting possible to achieve the prettiest pops. “And the easiest way to get a paleta out of a mold is to dip the mold in hot water,” she says. Pops also take well to liquor. Potenza (1430 H St. NW; 202-6384444) served cocktail pops all summer, such as the Orvieto, a mix of strawberry, balsamic syrup and Italian vodka. “Just remember alcohol doesn’t freeze, so don’t put too much in,” says Gerson, who thinks that pops, whether boozy or tame, appeal to your inner kid. “They’re natural and delicious,” she says.
