Museum decides empty space is less interesting than its exhibits
‘Will you make me the happiest man alive and swallow this ring?’
A sinkhole that swallowed eight prized sports cars won’t be a permanent attraction at the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky. The museum’s board of directors voted Saturday to fill in the entire hole that opened up in February and became an Internet sensation. Mindful of the hole’s popularity, museum officials in June were leaning toward keeping part of the hole open, but that proved too costly for the long term. (AP)
Two people were arrested on suspicion of felony theft after police said one of them swallowed a stolen ring. An X-ray showed the ring inside the stomach of a 25-year-old woman. A man had been examining a ring at an Orem, Utah, jewelry store on Friday when he allegedly left with it, getting into a car driven by the woman. Officers arrested the suspects, but were baffled as to the ring’s whereabouts until the X-ray was taken. (AP)

How cans stack up Pantry staples are not the best building material. “Full cans of food are less stable than you think,” says Andrea Ryon of Michael Baker International, one of 28 local architecture firms vying for such awards as “Best Meal” and “Best Use of Labels” in this year’s Canstruction contest at the National Building Museum. All proceeds, plus about 65,000 cans, go to the Capital Area Food Bank after the whimsical sculptures are taken apart Saturday. We asked a few teams how they created such structurally sound stacks. RGIII statue is to Waco as Lincoln Memorial is to D.C. Robert Griffin III was very visibly in the house for Sunday’s opening of the Baylor Bears’ McLane Stadium, leading the opening prayer, hanging out at midfield with George W. Bush for the coin toss and conducting the band at half time, according to numerous news outlets. The Redskins star will have a permanent presence at his Texas alma mater’s new $266 million stadium (which features fancy sports technology as well as a protected lagoon for “sailgating”) in the form of a 9½-foot bronze statue, above. “If you go to Washington, D.C., before you go watch the Redskins and Robert, you go see Mr. Lincoln,” Baylor President Ken Starr said, the Associated Press reported. “When you come to Waco, you’re going to see the statue of Judge [R.E.B.] Baylor, Coach [Grant] Teaff — and Robert Griffin III.” R.S.

If this treehouse structure were a real building, it might qualify for LEED certification, says team member Andrea Ryon: “It’s made of natural and recycled materials, and it doesn’t use any electricity.” Maintenance could become an issue, however. “Over time, the spaghetti ladder may not hold up. You may have to get good at climbing up the bean cans,” Ryon says.
With more than 6,000 cans, this World Cupinspired structure is a strong contender for the “Most Cans” prize. “Our biggest concern was making sure it was structurally sound,” says team member Charmaine Josiah. In addition to using 3-D modeling software, the team made a candy model. “Sweet Tarts have proportions that are similar to tuna fish cans,” Josiah says.
Construction took almost seven hours, the entire allotted build time. “We had to tear it down and rebuild it four times,” says team member Nick Brow, because the thin pieces of foam core, used to level the tuna fish cans, were warping under the cans’ weight. The solution: Fewer layers of stabilizing foam. “It’s holding up, but I would definitely not want to live in it,” Brow says.

Taxicab commission approves series of reforms
A 25-year-old rock climber died Sunday after being trapped beneath a large rock on Offutt Island in the Potomac River, a Montgomery County, Md., fire and rescue spokesman said. Rescuers from Montgomery and Fairfax counties assembled to try to extricate the man but he apparently died before extrication was completed. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Starting next month, venues will be able to alert cab drivers when there is a surge in business, more wheelchair-accessible taxis will cruise the streets, and the time it take drivers to become licensed will shorten dramatically. The D.C. Taxicab Commission approved the changes recently as part of an effort to improve customer service in the age of ride-sharing services. (TWP)

Retirement wave may lead to officer shortage THE DISTRICT The District is on the cusp of a severe shortage of police officers as a potential flood of retirements and the departures of some young officers threaten to shrink the force even as the city grows and 911 calls increase. The emerging trends have alarmed D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and several D.C. Council members, who said that the shortages could tax a department already scrambling to keep up. The D.C. police department is just shy of 4,000 officers, and Lanier has warned that her force can’t get much smaller. “We’re going to fall behind,” the chief said. She said she is hiring 300 officers a year — the maximum she can with her budget, training resources and ability to conduct background checks. Lanier also acknowledged that the department has told several officers they had to leave because they had reached mandatory retirement age, a rule that had been long overlooked. Police union officials said 192 officers left in the first six months of 2014, while 209 have been hired. But defections have accelerated: 73 officers left in June and July. In an average month, 15 officers leave the force. Council member Tommy Wells said he proposed adding

Man dies after becoming trapped under boulder
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has warned that the city’s force can’t get much smaller.
$6 million to the police department’s budget to hire more civilians, allowing Lanier to push desk-bound officers back on the streets. But the idea was rejected. Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, said D.C. is not alone in struggling. Many departments slowed or stopped hiring in the late 2000s, and some imposed layoffs. Now, with the recession over, “we’re seeing many departments hiring at the same time,” Wexler said. “There is a lot of demand for qualified applicants.” He noted the downside of hiring too many officers too fast. “You hire a whole bunch at once, they get old at the same time.”
Indeed, D.C. is faced with the specter of mass retirements largely because of its past hiring practices. D.C. police hired nearly 1,500 officers in 1989 alone, boosting its force by 40 percent in a single year. The hundreds that remain are able to retire at full pension over the next six to 12 months. Even as D.C.’s population grows, it is still recovering from leaner times. The size of the police force has shrunk from 4,040 in 2009 to 3,984 last year, while the city’s population grew about 7 percent. And calls to 911 have increased even faster: The city received nearly 20,000 more emergency calls in 2013 than in 2012. Meanwhile, union officials said the city has a perennial problem with retention: For instance, of 19 officers who graduated one D.C. police academy class in 2006, only six remain on the force. Some are challenging Lanier’s efforts to simultaneously push other officers out. The senior police officers who were ordered to retire, for instance, cannot understand why they were forced out at a time when every body counts. Even taking a desk job could free up someone else for the street, they say. “It’s in the hiring paperwork,” Lanier said. “It’s not a secret.” PETER HERMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

REGION Tens of thousands of voters were registered to cast ballots in both Virginia and Maryland during the 2012 presidential election — and more than 150 appear to have voted twice, an advocacy group claims. Seventeen of those alleged instances were in Virginia’s Fairfax County, where election officials turned the information over to law enforcement. The situation sparked a strong reaction among some political leaders in Virginia, coming in the midst of a heated national debate over whether voter fraud is rampant or mere rhetoric. Many Republican-dominated state legislatures, including Virginia’s, have recently passed
strict new voter identification laws that their supporters say are intended to reduce voter fraud. But Democrats claim that actual fraud is rare, and they say the real purpose of it is to restrict ballot access for such groups of voters as the elderly, college students and immigrants who are less likely to hold a government ID — and more likely to vote for Democrats. An ID wouldn’t have made a difference in this case, though. Jeremy Mayer, an associate professor at George Mason University, said that one of the challenges of policing voter fraud is the absence of a national registry of voters. “That’s a very time-consuming, budgetheavy thing to do,” Mayer said. THE BACK STORY: Worried that the Russians might invade Alaska in the early Cold War years, the U.S. government recruited and trained fishermen, bush pilots, trappers and other private citizens across Alaska for a covert network to feed wartime intelligence to the military. Ukraine won’t declare cease-fire MOSCOW Russian officials pressed Ukraine on Monday to declare a cease-fire with separatists, but Ukrainians say they are in a war not just against the rebels but also against Russia — on behalf of Europe. “A great war has come, the likes of which Europe has not seen since the Second World War,” Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey said on his Facebook page Monday. Lost territory, trapped soldiers, and increasing reports of Russian tanks and troops in eastern Ukraine have changed the course of events in the past few days. Emboldened rebel forces are bearing down on strategic
targets, such as the port city of Mariupol — which the Ukrainian military says it can defend — and the airport in Luhansk, where troops retreated in the face of a rebel onslaught Monday. Ukraine and Western allies have surmised that Russian forces are providing assistance to pro-Russian separatists. Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview that aired Sunday that “statehood” for eastern Ukraine should be part of discussions to resolve the conflict, but he has repeatedly insisted that he wants greater autonomy for the region, not the breakup of Ukraine. Cities in the United States and Western Europe are being eyed as Islamic State militants’ future targets and President Barack Obama needs to take action, U.S. lawmakers said Sunday. Leaders of the Senate and House intelligence committees prodded the White House to work to prevent the extremists from launching attacks on U.S. soil.

Thousands of Israeli children near the Gaza Strip went back to school Monday after spending the summer in bomb shelters during the Israel-Hamas war. Schools in Gaza, however, remained closed as the territory recovers. Children in Ukraine and Iraq also face uncertainty as the school year begins. (AP) Gaza
Israel and Hamas agreed to a truce last Tuesday, but with tens of thousands of people still sheltered in schools, the start of Gaza’s school year has been delayed until mid-September.
Ukraine
Classes officially began Monday, but more than half of the schools across rebel-held areas stayed closed as fighting continued with pro-Russia separatists.
Iraq
Less than a month before classes are to start, thousands of schools are occupied by families who have fled violence by al-Qaedainspired rebels. Some officials are being forced to choose whether to delay the school year or kick out families. Meanwhile, in the Iraqi provinces of Nineveh and Anbar, many schools won’t open, period, because they’re in the hands of the Islamic State extremist group.

In shadow of war, school is not a certainty A cartoon of a member or a supporter of the Islamic State group sings a song on state-run al-Iraqiya TV in Iraq.
Disarming militants, one joke at a time
U.S. AIRSTRIKES CONTINUE: The U.S. continues to conduct airstrikes in northern Iraq to halt the advance of Islamic State fighters. Military forces used fighter and attack aircraft to conduct three airstrikes Sunday and Monday near Mosul Dam, the U.S. Central Command said. PM PLEDGES TO ROOT OUT MILITANTS:
Iraqi outgoing Prime Minster Nouri al-Maliki pledged Monday to turn his country into “a big grave” for Sunni militants from the Islamic State group and commended security forces who achieved a rare victory over insurgents by ending a two-month siege of the Shiite town Amirli. (AP)
Across Middle East, TV networks use satire to challenge the Islamic State BAGHDAD The bumbling young militant first drops the rocket launcher on the toes of his boss before firing toward an Iraqi military checkpoint — not realizing he’s fired it backward at his leader. The “Looney Tunes”-style cartoon targeting the Islamic State group comes after its militants have swept across swaths of Syria and Iraq, declaring their own caliphate while conducting mass shootings of their prisoners. The group cheers its advances and beheadings in Internet videos. In response, TV networks across the Middle East have
Syrian rebels, government clash in Golan Heights
begun airing cartoons and programs using satire to criticize the group and its claims of representing Islam. The shows challenge the group’s legitimacy and chip away at the fear some have that the militants are unstoppable. “These people are not a true representation of Islam and so by mocking them, it is a way to show that we are against them,” said Nabil Assaf, one of the producers of Lebanon’s “Ktir Salbe Show,” which has challenged the group. “Of course it’s a sensitive issue, but this is one way to reject extremism and make it so the people are not afraid.”
The Islamic State, born out of the Syrian war, has made many gains but now finds itself challenged in a cultural war. In one skit produced by the “Ktir Salbe Show,” a taxi driver picks up a jihadi who rejects listening to radio because it didn’t exist in the earliest days of Islam, a knock on the Islamic State’s literal take on the Koran. The driver offers to turn on the air conditioning, but that, too, is rejected. Fed up, the driver asks: “Were there taxi cabs in the earliest days?” “No, 1,000 times no!” the passenger answers. The driver responds by kicking out the jihadi
and telling him to wait for a camel instead. In Syria, comedic news programs also target the Islamic State, with its presenters disguising themselves out of fears of retaliation. In Iraq, an animated program on state television depicted a slew of characters on the run from the Iraqi military, including young Islamic State militants and old Saddam Hussein-era officials. “We are all against these terrorist organizations,” said Alaa alMajedi of the state-run al-Iraqiya channel. “Comedy is one way to raise awareness.” VIVIAN SALAMA (AP)

Outrage and privacy concerns flood the Web as photos of nude celebrities are leaked MEDIA The leaking of hundreds of private and intimate photographs of Hollywood celebrities cast new doubt on the security of popular online storage sites Monday as investigators sought explanations for the high-profile breach. Privacy experts joined Hollywood publicists in denouncing the leaks, which flooded websites over the weekend with nude images of a half-dozen A-list actresses and performers, including Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence. The breach has spurred concerns about the security of photographs, videos and documents that millions store in Internet “cloud” accounts. Lawrence’s photos allegedly were obtained from a personal iCloud account, a service operated by Apple and often used to automatically store photos taken by a user’s smartphone. “This is a flagrant violation of privacy,” a spokesman for
Lawrence said in a statement that also threatened to seek prosecution, not only for the hacker but for anyone who redistributed the stolen photographs. The FBI said Monday it was looking into the leaks. An Apple spokesman said the company was “actively investigating” apparent breaches of some of its iCloud accounts. Experts said the hackers appear to have deliberately targeted celebrity accounts. Still, with investigations just getting underway, it was unclear what methods were used in stealing the photos and whether the thefts pointed to broader vulnerabilities. Anonymous posters on the online message board 4chan — where the photos first surfaced — alleged that the photos were obtained from iCloud accounts. The first ones to appear were sexually explicit images of Lawrence, 24, who acknowledged through her publicist that private material had been stolen. The statement sparked a frenzy of media interest by confirming that the photos were real. Nude pictures of celebrities are often

faked and posted online. Shortly after the Lawrence photos appeared, posts on the 4chan site claimed that hackers had also obtained risque photos of actresses and singers ranging from reality-show star Kim Kardashian to pop singer Rihanna. Some of the targeted celebrities have weighed in. Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton’s lawyer told Buzzfeed that she would pursue legal action against anyone who posted the images. Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead tweeted an angry message: “To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves. Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this.” Not all the posted photos were deemed authentic: Nickelodeon actress Victoria Justice, pop singer Ariana Grande and Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney said that none of the pictures attributed to them were real. Iran president urges clerics to be more tolerant of Internet
After the White House banned imports of the classic brand of AK-47 assault rifles as part of sanctions against Russia, buyers wiped out gun dealers’ inventories. It’s another example of the unintended consequence of trying to limit gun sales: booming demand. MICHAEL ROSENWALD (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The ban In July, Treasury Department officials notified RWC Group, a Pennsylvania importer, that they were adding Kalashnikov Concern, the original maker of AK-47s, to its list of sanctions against Russia because of actions in Ukraine.
The effect Jay Portz, vice president of RWC, said a run on the Russian-made rifles began almost immediately. One seller said buyers learned of the ban on social media and raced to buy the real thing.
The downside Gun-control advocates fear some buyers will flip their purchases in private sales at gun shows or online auction sites, where background checks aren’t required. “But you may want to accept that short-term problem for a long-term gain by banning a high-powered gun,” said Stephen Teret, a public health expert at Johns Hopkins.

THREE POINTERS
Getting to know you
REDSKINS | WEEK 1
Looking for answers
After the first week of college football, here are a few players you may want to get to know after standout season debuts.
THE PRESEASON IS OFFICIALLY IN THE BOOKS, and now the Redskins kick off their preparations for their season opener in Houston on
Sunday. The team did a little tinkering with the roster after hammering out an initial list of 53 players by Sunday’s league deadline. Things ramp up this week. The energy level increases, as does the sense of urgency. The studying of opponents, game-planning and

strategizing all begins. Here are four questions facing the Redskins as they prep for Sunday. MIKE JONES (THE WASHINGTON POST)
3 Rashad Greene Florida State WR
Jameis Winston struggled a little, but Greene saved the No. 1 Seminoles with 11 grabs for 203 yards and a gameclinching 50-yard score.

Where is Robert Griffin III’s confidence level?
Who will get the start at strong safety?
What does Duke Ihenacho have to offer?
Who starts at quarterback for Houston?
The preseason didn’t end well for the young quarterback. But Robert Griffin III played down his struggles from the Ravens game and said he sees improvement both in his individual game and in the offense as a whole. Jay Gruden says Griffin just needs to play with more decisiveness and get rid of the ball more quickly. Griffin has had a few days to digest the good, bad and ugly from the preseason, and now turns his attention to Houston.
The initial 53-man roster featured Ryan Clark, Bacarri Rambo, Trenton Robinson and Akeem Davis. But the team waived Davis to make room for former Broncos safety Duke Ihenacho. For now, it appears that Rambo and Clark will both start, but anything could change between now and then. Rambo will look to prove he can continue to play at an improved level as he takes advantage of Brandon Meriweather‘s two-game suspension.
The third-year pro came out of nowhere last season to start for the Broncos, recording 73 tackles and three forced fumbles. But Denver deemed him expendable after signing T.J. Ward this offseason and after getting a healthy Quinton Carter back in the mix. Washington’s coaches are intrigued, but it could take a little time for Duke Ihenacho to learn Washington’s system to the point where he can truly showcase his capabilities.
The Texans on Sunday acquired Ryan Mallett, 26, via a trade from the New England Patriots. Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick has served as the starter through the preseason, but he has completed only 58.1 percent of his passes while leading a struggling offense. Mallett — a third-round pick in 2011 — is believed to have good upside. But it’s hard to say if he’ll come in and unseat Fitzpatrick as the starter in one week’s time.
Ameer Abdullah Nebraska RB
The senior, who’s the top returning rusher in the country, ran for 232 yards on 21 carries against overmatched Florida Atlantic.

In his first start, Hill broke Johnny Manziel’s singlegame passing record with 511 yards against South Carolina’s usually stout defense.

Phillies throw combined no-hitter
Cole Hamels and three Phillies relievers combined to pitch a no-hitter Monday, beating the Braves 7-0. Hamels (8-6) was pulled after six innings and seemed fine with the decision. He struck out seven, walked five, hit a batter and threw 108 pitches. Relievers Jake Diekman, Ken Giles and closer Jonathan Papelbon, left, each pitched a perfect inning to finish off the fourth no-hitter in the majors this season. Serena, Djokovic ease into quarters Bouchard beat before semifinals at a major for first time this year TENNIS Serena Williams reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kaia Kanepi at the U.S. Open on Monday, keeping her hopes alive for a third straight Flushing Meadows crown. Williams, who lost in the fourth round of the Australian Open, the second round of the French Open and third round of Wimbledon, said she felt the pressure of getting to the quarters in New York. “I finally made a quarterfinal this year!” Williams said in her on-court interview, raising her hands to the cheers of the crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I think

I felt it in my service game. I’m like, ‘Can I please make it to a Grand Slam quarters this year?’ ” The seventh-seeded Eugenie Bouchard needed a medical timeout and was beaten 7-6 (2), 6-4 by 17th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova, ending her streak of making the semifinals at each Grand Slam tournament this year. On the men’s side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic reached the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open for the eighth year in a row — and at a 22nd consecutive Grand Slam tournament overall. Djokovic made only 19 unforced errors, saved both break points he faced, and breezed past 22nd-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. No. 8 Andy Murray needed 2 hours, 35 minutes to defeat the ninth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 7-5, 6-4. (AP)
Star tight end Rob Gronkowski stood in front of his Gillette Stadium locker Monday and announced he will be playing in the Patriots’ opener at Miami this Sunday. Saying he is “super excited,” Gronkowski vowed to be on the field after he didn’t play in any of the four preseason games as he completed his recovery from December right knee surgery. (AP)

NATIONALS On Aug. 11, Jayson Werth decided he needed a change. He required a cortisone injection to relieve his inflamed right shoulder, which sidelined him for five days. During that span, Werth came to believe a long follow-through in his swing caused the irritation in his shoulder. While he waited for the shot to take effect, he tinkered. Have a couple of Werth’s swings lately reminded you of the swing he used to homer in Game 4 of the 2012 National League Division Series? That’s because it’s almost the same. “I had to do something to take the stress off my shoulder,” Werth said. “I was screwing around in the cage. It was similar to when I came back from my wrist injury in 2012.” In August, Werth hit .320 with three home runs and 16 RBIs. The recent surge has added

to an excellent season for the veteran outfielder. Werth, 35, is having one of best years of his career. Entering Monday’s game, he had a .287 batting average with 15 home runs, 75 RBIs and 72 runs in 126 games. Werth, though, is not ready to contextualize his season just yet. “It’s no secret: I want to win
another championship,” said Werth, who won a World Series with the Phillies in 2008. “I want another ring. Those were my intentions when I came here. In order for that to happen, we’re going to have to play good, I’m going to have to play good and we’ve got a long, hard road ahead of us.” ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

You probably won’t be able to touch your fingers to the floor when you try this leg stretch in heels. But it feels good after muscle-strengthening moves.
The heights of class Working it in high heels helps students improve strength, posture and confidence DANCE How tall are those size 14 leather pumps? “Five inches, but with the platform, it’s really 6,” says JuWan Bizzell, who manages to move gracefully even after strapping on his towering footwear. The hip-hop performer wanted to create a “different” class for Capitol Hill’s Momentum Dance & Fitness studio, so he decided to leverage the skills he’d learned while backing up drag queens in nightclub shows. Although Bizzell looks like a natural, he promises that he wasn’t at first: “I felt like the weirdest thing in heels. I was a mess.” So if he can manage to stay upright during complicated routines, Bizzell says, his students can too. The class, held every Friday, is more than just a chance to boogie down to kick off the weekend, adds Momentum owner Roberta Rothstein, who notes that it’s also an education in how to wear high heels without injuring yourself. “I’ve been watching how women’s ankles roll in, and how they don’t lift their feet. This class can

help you learn to walk correctly, holding yourself from your core,” Rothstein says. It starts with a warm-up strut, so students get accustomed to standing tall and taking powerful strides across the studio. Then Bizzell drills a series of exercises. There’s the “flamingo stance,” which requires balancing on one leg. To make it harder, he has students perform standing side crunches (bring that

the leg muscles happy. Then there’s really good news: It’s time to kick off your shoes. Bizzell prefers that everyone learn the choreography for his dance routines in flats or bare feet as a safety measure. While marking the steps — which included shaking, thrusting and spinning — at a class last month, student Rose Feroah, 30, asked what everyone else was likely thinking: “How is this supposed to happen in heels?” Miraculously, when both the music and the shoes came on, no one fell over. There was some flailing at first as the group attempted to keep up with the quick-paced combos. After several run-throughs, however, the view in the mirror became downright impressive. “Somehow, by the end, I’ve always got it and I’m asking for more,” marveled Dinah Reese, 43, who comes to class “to channel my inner Beyonce.” But she bets even Bey could learn a few things from Bizzell.

Six to Start’s “Superhero Workout” ($5) uses your iPhone’s (or iPad’s) camera to track your reps as you do strength workouts to boost your superhero-ness and move the story along. Squats, for example, fire up the leg portion of your super-suit. The sessions, which range from seven to 25 minutes, are varied and a bit silly. DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK
What she needs is your two cents Q. My good friend is asking people to “sponsor” her international travel for the next few months. Is she doing charity work? No. Is she part of some organization? No. She is doing it to “grow and explore” and even has a website set up for donations about it. I have chosen not to donate but she keeps bringing it up. Do I say anything to her? COMPLETELY ANNOYED That depends on whether you want to be cursed at in a text message from Ibiza. Seriously, you have to decide what you’re after. Are you looking for a polite way to get her to stop asking for donations? Or a full-on conversation about how egregious you feel it is? You’ve got a ladder of different levels of engagement to choose from, from “I’m sorry that I can’t
contribute financially to your trip, but I’ll be cheering you on!” to “I’m really bothered by the way you’ve gone about funding this. What was your thought process?” How likely are you to change her mind? What would you get out of sharing your feelings? The only right thing to say here is what aligns best with the outcome you’re hoping for.
What you’re describing is serious, and possibly includes abuse and sexual assault. Counseling is the best way I can foresee you being able to have support as you sort out your feelings and decide on a plan of action to make things better in your life. If your marriage has been unhappy for 21/2 decades, then the amount of disappointment and hurt that you’ve been keeping inside you is something you deserve to have help with, but that help isn’t going to be a set of magic words said once and then finished. You could very well have some depressive symptoms, which could be reacting with your marital problems in a cyclical way. This is your health here. I urge you to do something that will benefit not only yourself, but your kids, for the rest of your lives. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

A Falls Church native didn’t think he’d grow up to be Spider-Man STUNTS Spider-Man has something he’d like to say: “Thanks, Mom.” Moe Alafrangy — the 25-yearold who plays the comic book character in the “Marvel Universe Live!” tour — at first wasn’t happy when his mother dragged him to taekwondo classes starting when he was 9. “I didn’t see the point of it,” Alafrangy says. But then he progressed to advanced levels, and discovered martial arts “tricking,” which focuses on flips, kicks and jumps. “I didn’t know what I was preparing for,” says Alafrangy, who eventually became a fourthdegree black belt. He just liked that this kind of stuff made him feel like a superhero. Now he’s actually donning a skintight suit as part of the
22-11
live-action Marvel show, which swings by Verizon Center and the Patriot Center this month. These two stops are especially thrilling for Alafrangy, who grew up in Falls Church and graduated from Annandale High School. Alafrangy had been planning to attend George Mason University when he landed a gig with a live production of “How to Train Your Dragon.” He ended up moving to L.A. instead. The role of Alafrangy Spider-Man has demanded a different kind of education. Alafrangy has learned to swing from webs and “fly” over the audience. (“Kids always freak out” at that moment, he says.) The scariest bit for him? Falling from a 26-foot platform. “You have to be focused to land on the airbag,” says Alafrangy, who started with a 16-foot drop and gradually increased the
height as he got more comfortable with the stunt. “And it’s like jumping into water, so if you hit it the wrong way, it’ll hurt.” To all the aspiring superheroes out there, Alafrangy wants to point out that his martial arts background gave him a leg up with the choreography. “I can throw punches and kicks properly, and I instinctively know how to dodge,” he says. And, serendipitously, one of his favorite tricks was already a Spider-Man move: the Webster, a kind of standing front flip. But Peter Parker probably never prepped to fight villains the way Alafrangy does. He warms up by putting on some music and dancing. To prevent injury, Alafrangy says, it’s critical to step on stage already breaking a sweat. Mom should be so proud. VICKY HALLETT (EXPRESS)

Taking notes from this strange summer box office
MUSIC
verbatim
Nostalgia works … sometimes
Adults make the hits
Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” above, (the newly crowned highestgrossing film of 2014), and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” are the surprise hits of the summer, capitalizing on viewer nostalgia. Both have blown away such competition as “The Expendables 3.” That film, starring Sylvester Stallone and other I-Lovethe-’80s stars, tanked.
The sleeper hit of the summer, Jon Favreau’s “Chef,” was just rereleased so that mature audiences who read reviews can eventually make it a hit after opening weekend. Audiences over 25 are also lining up for “Boyhood,” above, Richard Linklater’s intimate epic. The year’s strongest reviews and earliest Oscar buzz have propelled the film to indie success.
It’s better to be first
“The Giver,” above, should have been a sure thing, having been based on Lois Lowry’s dystopian novel that launched futuristic young adult fiction such as “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.” Instead, it underperformed when it opened in early August, the victim of the cruel irony that the very films it helped spawn now made it look hopelessly derivative.

The dawn of the school year is a fitting time to look back on the past season’s confusing lessons, reflected in an overall box office take that was around 15 percent lower than last year’s. This primer is an attempt to make sense of Summer 2014’s mixed messages. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Japan loves Cruise
Why didn’t you see “Edge of Tomorrow?” Was it those dreadful trailers that made it look like a sad Tom Cruise vanity project? The smart, stylish sci-fi adventure did poorly when it opened in the United States early this summer. Thanks to strong overseas sales, it will (barely) recoup its $200 million-plus budget — proving the international market is a force to be reckoned with.
