Would you rather corral 250 escaped pigs or 30-50 feral hogs? About 250 escaped pigs have been causing a ruckus in Orange, Vt., the past month, but most of them had returned as of Thursday, thanks in part to a trail of hot dog buns. Farm workers and volunteers also trudged up and down the dirt road hill Thursday trying to drive pigs back to Sugar Mountain Farm. Farmer Walter Jeffries said most of his pigs have returned home. They moved to the United States several years ago and opened a falafel food truck soon after. They opened the first Roaming Rooster truck in 2015 and their first brick-andmortar restaurant last year. Roaming Rooster already had a steady stream of customers, Habtemariam said. Earlier this year, the eatery won “Best Fried Chicken” in Washington City Paper’s “Best of D.C.: Food & Drink Readers’ Picks” for 2019. But it was last week’s tweet that drove demand through the roof. Unlike Popeyes, Roaming Rooster is unlikely to run out of sandwiches any time soon, Habtemariam said. He has been on the phone with his suppliers, requesting more shipments. “Seeing all this — it makes me feel like I did something right, that people are enjoying my product,” Habtemariam said. Baby red panda thrives at zoo’s Virginia facility A baby red panda at the National Zoo’s facility in Front Royal, Va., is doing well, zoo officials report. A video shows him looking around as he’s weighed and then yawning with his pointy claws outstretched. The zoo describes him as “3 pounds of adorable.” Officials said the red panda, which was born in June, is “still young but already has thick fur and sharp claws.” He spends most of his time in his nest box, but officials said they expect that he will soon be “climbing trees with ease.” The cub will likely stay with his mother until he’s 12 to 18 months old. The following morning, there was a line out the door at the Roaming Rooster in Northeast. It was “the best thing that ever happened to us,” said Michael Habtemariam, one of the owners. Conflict erupts over public field Private school exchanges $950K in repairs for access, angering residents and politicians

Mayor chooses new Metro rep to replace Price

THE MARET SCHOOL

THE DISTRICT An elite private school has been granted special access to a public playing field in Northwest Washington in exchange for funding upgrades to the site. But the deal with D.C. officials has some residents and politicians calling foul on a move they say shortchanges public school students. The deal between the Maret School and the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation allows Maret exclusive use of the field at the Jelleff Recreation Center during the hours of highest demand — 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays — for the next decade, according to Marjo Talbott, Maret’s head of school. In exchange, the school is spending about $950,000 to improve the turf field, add a fence and renovate the recreation center building, Talbott said. A coalition of public school parents, elected officials and area residents is petitioning Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, and the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation to reverse the deal and “share the prime hours more equitably with the many public school students desperate to find a place to play too.” On Sunday, D.C. Council member Elissa Silverman, I-At Large, issued a news release with the letter she sent to the Department of Parks and Recreation and the D.C. Department of General Services calling for the contract to be revisited. Silverman asked for additional information about the process that led to the agreement

with Maret. She concluded with a request for answers by Sept. 15. The Jelleff field is across from the public Hardy Middle School. Maret, a K-12 institution, charges about $35,000 per pupil per year. Delano Hunter, director of the Parks and Recreation Department, said in a statement that the department is “proud to move forward investments that minimize costs” to D.C. taxpayers. Talbott said Maret is performing a public service by repairing the field, and she noted that its reserved time in the afternoons totals just 10% of daylight hours. Maret already shares with Hardy, she said: It allows the middle school to use Jelleff from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. almost every

Wednesday throughout the fall. A deal forged about a decade ago between Maret and the Department of Parks and Recreation granted Maret prime-time access to Jelleff for 10 years after the school promised to pay about $2.4 million for major

repairs to the field and recreation center. The deal signed this summer extends the older agreement, which is set to expire in 2020, according to Talbott. Neighborhood leaders sent a letter to the department in March requesting that the agency consider all community members — including the Jelleff Boys and Girls Club, which hosts a free after-school program from about 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays. Students in that program, which serves about 100 children from all of D.C.’s eight wards, have long been frustrated by their lack of field access, according to Bob Stowers, the club’s longtime director. STUDENTS ENROLLED IN FREE COLLEGE

The number of students awarded the first round of Maryland scholarships for free tuition for the state’s community colleges. That’s a sliver of the 13,000 students the Maryland Association of Community Colleges projected could benefit. The scholarship provides up to $5,000 to students whose families earn less than $150,000 a year and adults earning less than $100,000. The state covers tuition remaining after factoring in other scholarships and grants. College officials blamed the slow start on administrative challenges. (TWP)

THE DISTRICT D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, will nominate a deputy who led the Department of Motor Vehicles for more than a decade to replace Corbett Price on the Metro board, her spokeswoman confirmed Saturday. Bowser’s selection of Lucinda Babers to represent the city on the powerful regional transit agency board came a day after Price, above, resigned from the panel. He was criticized for his role in attempting to conceal an ethics violation by D.C. Council member and former Metro board chairman Jack Evans. Price, a health care executive and political donor to the mayor, cited health and family reasons for his resignation Friday. Since March, Babers has been deputy mayor for infrastructure and operations. Before that, Babers led the D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles since 2007. Her board nomination must be confirmed by the D.C. Council. Evans and Price both resigned in the aftermath of an ethics probe into Evans. Both men falsely said that the Metro ethics committee cleared Evans of wrongdoing. Probe records said both men threatened Metro’s general counsel to prevent the findings from becoming public. Evans resigned from the Metro board in June after the ethics violation became public. That vacancy is expected to be filled by the council. Ward 6 member Charles Allen confirmed he is interested in serving. (TWP)

Officials: Investigator failed to act on housing violations

A survey conducted by D.C.’s Office of the Attorney General found that residents are split evenly on whether 1980s drug kingpin Rayful Edmond III’s prison term should be cut short. The survey, which was released Friday, was requested by U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan as he considers whether to reduce Edmond’s life sentence. The U.S. Attorney’s office for the District has asked Edmond be granted early release in exchange for 20 years of cooperating in other drug cases. Of the 510 participants in the survey, 239 said he should be released early, 243 said he should remain in prison and 28 were undecided. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Two members of the D.C. Council are asking city agencies to examine a local firm that is set to work on a $215 million no-bid sports gambling contract despite the fact that it has no employees and listed executives on its website who didn’t work there. Inquiries from council members Robert White Jr., D-At Large, and Elissa Silverman, I-At Large, came after a Washington Post investigation into Veterans Services Corp., which has the largest chunk of the contract. The Greek gambling company Intralot selected the firm to comply with a D.C. law requiring companies with large public contracts to share work with small local businesses. (TWP)

The same housing investigator who failed to act after a police officer flagged a possible illegal rooming house in Northwest D.C. where two tenants were killed in a fire Aug. 18 also mishandled a similar warning the same officer made about another house in March, officials said. City officials on Friday found numerous safety and legal concerns at the house at 5310 14th St. NW. Inspectors from the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, which enforces building codes, and officials from the police and fire departments are now reviewing the cases that had been closed by the investigator. California dive boat fire leaves 4 dead, 29 missing

Five crew survive blaze that destroyed boat off Santa Cruz Island 245 DAYS AT SEA

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT VIA AP

OXNARD, CALIF. The bodies of four people who died when a raging fire swept through a dive boat off the Southern California coast were recovered Monday as authorities said more than two dozen others remained missing and feared dead. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Kroll said the four bodies had injuries consistent with drowning. Searchers continued to look for more than two dozen other people who were aboard the vessel Conception, which burned while anchored off Santa Cruz Island. “Right now they’re conducting shoreline searches for any available survivors,” Coast Guard Capt. Monica Rochester said at a news conference at Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. The Coast Guard said the vessel was believed to have carried 38 people, including five crew members who jumped off soon after the fire ignited. “The crew was actually already awake and on the bridge and they jumped off,” Rochester said. Authorities said the crew members were rescued by a good Samaritan vessel called The Grape Escape. Asked if the crew tried to

some information out of it to send vessels on scene,” Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Barney said. Rochester said that call indicated the boat was already fully ablaze. The Conception was chartered by Worldwide Diving Adventures, which says on its website that it has been taking divers on such expeditions since the 1970s. Asked if the boat operator has a history of any violations, Rochester said, “The vessel has been in full compliance.” The Nationa l T ra nsportation Safety Board said it is sending a team to investigate.

The cruise ship Viking Sun set off from London’s Greenwich Pier on Saturday with the intent to set the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous passenger cruise, CNN reported. The Viking Cruises luxury “Ultimate World Cruise” will last 245 days, visiting 51 countries and 111 ports across six continents. The 745-foot ship can accommodate 930 guests. Fares start at $92,990 per person, including business class airfare and an excursion at each port. The Viking Sun has traditional cruise amenities such as a swimming pool and theater, but shuns others such as a casino. Instead, it’s billed as a “thinking person’s cruise,” with resident historians and TED Talks screenings.

The Conception was on the final day of a Labor Day weekend cruise to the Channel Islands when the fire erupted. “At 3:15 this morning, the Coast Guard overheard a mayday call. WEATHER Hurricane Dorian unleashed massive flooding across the Bahamas on Monday, pummeling the islands with so much wind and water that authorities urged people to find flotation devices and grab hammers to break out of their attics if necessary. At least five deaths were blamed on the storm. “We are in the midst of a historic tragedy,” Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said in announcing the fatalities. He called the devastation “unprecedented and extensive.” The fearsome Category 4 storm slowed almost to a standstill as it shredded roofs, hurled cars and forced even rescue crews to take shelter until the onslaught passed. Officials said they received a “tremendous” number of calls from people in flooded homes. A radio station received more than 2,000 distress messages, including reports of a 5-monthold baby stranded on a roof and a grandmother with six grandchildren who cut a hole in a roof to escape rising floodwaters. The deaths in the Bahamas came after a previous stormrelated fatality in Puerto Rico. At least 21 people were hurt in the Bahamas and evacuated by helicopters, the prime minster said. Police Chief Samuel Butler urged people to remain calm and share their GPS coordinates but said rescue crews had to wait until weather conditions improved. “We simply cannot get to you,” he told Bahamas radio station ZNS. Forecasters warned that Dorian could generate a storm surge as high as 23 feet. Meanwhile in the U.S., the National Hurricane Center extended watches and warnings across the Florida and Georgia coasts. Forecasters expected

By 5 p.m. Monday, the storm’s top sustained winds fell slightly to 145 mph. It was crawling along Grand Bahama Island at 1 mph and then remained stationary.

The water reached roofs and the tops of palm trees. One woman filmed water lapping at the stairs of her home’s second floor. about 8 feet. So we’re pretty concerned right now because we’re not at high tide,” said Mackey, who shared the video with The Associated Press. On Sunday, Dorian churned over Abaco Island with battering winds and surf and heavy flooding. Parliament member Darren Henfield described the damage as

“catastrophic” and said officials did not have information on what happened on nearby cays. A spokesman for Bahamas Power and Light told ZNS that there was a blackout in New Providence, the archipelago’s most populous island. “The reports out of Abaco as everyone knows,” spokesman Quincy Parker said, pausing for a deep sigh, “were not good.” Most people went to shelters as the storm neared. Tourist hotels shut down, and residents boarded up their homes. Many people were expected to be left homeless. On Sunday, Dorian’s maximum sustained winds reached 185 mph, with gusts up to 220 mph, tying the record for the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever to make landfall. That equaled the Labor Day hurricane of 1935, before storms were named. The only recorded storm that was more powerful was Hurricane Allen in 1980, with 190 mph winds, though it did not make landfall at that strength. Dorian was likely to begin pulling away from the Bahamas early today and curving to the northeast parallel to the southeastern coast of the U.S. The system is expected to spin 40 to 50 miles off Florida, with hurricane-force wind speeds extending about 35 miles to the west. A mandatory evacuation of the entire South Carolina coast took effect Monday, covering about 830,000 people. A few hours later, Georgia’s governor, Brian Kemp, ordered mandatory evacuations for that state’s Atlantic coast. Authorities in Florida ordered mandatory evacuations in some coastal areas. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper warned his state that it could see heavy rain, winds and floods later in the week. MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN AND DÁNICA COTO (AP)

DHAMAR, YEMEN Yemeni medics said Monday they pulled dozens of bodies from the rubble of a Houthi rebel-run detention center that was hit a day earlier by Saudi-led coalition airstrikes, killing over 100 people and wounding dozens. It was the deadliest such attack so far this year in a stalemated four-year war that’s claimed tens of thousands of lives, thrust millions to the brink of famine and spawned the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The Saudi-led coalition, which has fought the Iran-backed Houthis since 2015, has faced international criticism for airstrikes that have hit schools, hospitals and wedding parties, killing thousands of civilians. By the early afternoon, 86 bodies had been pulled from the ruins of a building complex in southwestern Dhamar province, originally a college but converted by the Houthi rebels to a detention center, Yemen’s

Red Crescent said. There were around 170 detainees at the facility when the airstrikes hit on Sunday. The International Committee of the Red Cross said 40 wounded were being treated for injuries while the rest were presumed dead, and that it would likely take days to recover all the bodies. The Houthis said the detainees were captured forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, and that both the Red Cross and the coalition knew detainees were being held there. Col. Turki al-Maliki, a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said Monday it had bombed a “legitimate military target, and blamed the Houthis for using the former college as a detention center for Yemenis who were forcibly disappeared. Former detainee Mansour al-Zelai told The Associated Press that the Houthis were repairing weapons in and close to the detention center. Several other detainees said the same via posts to social media, and said the center had come under a series of airstrikes before. AHMED AL-HAJ AND SAMY MAGDY (AP)

‘A long spiral of going down’ ODESSA, TEXAS The gunman in a West Texas rampage “was on a long spiral of going down” and had been fired from his oil services job the morning he killed seven people, calling 911 both before and after the shooting began, authorities said Monday. Officers killed 36-year-old Seth Aaron Ator on Saturday outside a busy Odessa movie theater after a spate of violence that spanned 10 miles, injuring at least 25 people in addition to the dead, authorities said. FBI special agent Christopher Combs said Ator called the agency’s tip line as well as local police dispatch on Saturday after being fired from Journey Oilfield Services, making “rambling statements about some of the atrocities that he felt that he had gone through.” “He was on a long spiral of going down,” Combs said. “He didn’t wake up Saturday morning and walk into his company and then it happened. He went to that company in trouble.” Fifteen minutes later, Combs said, a Texas state trooper

unaware of those calls tried pulling over Ator for failing to signal a lane change. That was when Ator pointed an AR-style rifle toward the rear window of his car and fired on the trooper, starting a police chase as Ator sprayed bullets into passing cars and shopping plazas, then killed a U.S. Postal Service employee while hijacking her mail truck. The daylight attack came just

weeks after another mass shooting killed 22 people in the Texas city of El Paso. Authorities have not said how Ator obtained the gun used in the shooting, but Ator had previously failed a federal background check for a firearm, said John Wester, an agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke said Ator’s company also

called 911 on Saturday after Ator was fired but that Ator had already taken off by the time police showed up. Authorities said those killed were between 15 and 57 years old but did not immediately provide a list of names. Family and employers, however, said that among the dead were Edwin Peregrino, 25, who ran out of his parents’ home to see what the commotion was; mail carrier Mary Granados, 29, slain in her U.S. Postal Service truck; and 15-year-old Leilah Hernandez, who was walking out of an auto dealership. Ator fired at random as he drove in the area of Odessa and Midland. Police used a marked SUV to ram the mail truck outside the Cinergy Movie Theater in Odessa, disabling the vehicle. The gunman then fired at police, wounding two officers before he was killed. The weekend shooting brings the number of mass killings in the U.S. so far this year to 25, matching the number in all of 2018, according to The AP/ USATODAY/Northeastern University mass murder database. The number of people killed this year has already reached 142, surpassing the 140 people who were killed of all last year. PAUL J. WEBER AND JAKE BLEIBERG (AP)

U.S. and Poland sign pact to cooperate on 5G tech

A U.S. envoy said Monday the first 5,000 U.S. troops would leave Afghanistan within five months’ time under a deal with the Taliban that has been reached “in principle” but still needs President Trump’s approval. Trump last week told Fox News the U.S. plans to reduce its troop presence to 8,600 and then “make a determination from there.” He has been eager to withdraw troops before next year’s election. (AP)

Clad in gas masks along with their school uniforms, tens of thousands of students in Hong Kong boycotted the first day of classes Monday as part of a citywide strike following a violent weekend of demonstrations. Nearly three months of youthdominated protests — calling for democracy — will be tested as classes resume with the end of the summer break in the semiautonomous Chinese territory. (AP)

The Unites States and Poland signed an agreement Monday to cooperate on new 5G technology as concerns grow about Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. The U.S. has been lobbying allies to ban Huawei from 5G networks over concerns that the Chinese government could force the company to give it access to data for cyberespionage. Huawei has denied the allegation. (AP)

3,000 graves found in search for disappeared MEXICO CITY For years, Mexican newspapers have carried chilling tales of mothers searching for their missing children and finding hidden graves. Now, for the first time, the federal government has disclosed the number of clandestine sites where those who have been disappeared in Mexico’s raging narco-violence have turned up. Nearly 5,000 bodies have been discovered in more than 3,000 graves since late 2006, said Karla Quintana, the head of the government’s National Search Commission. That’s well above previous estimates. Quinto Elemento Lab, a Mexican investigative journalism organization, published a report last November identifying 1,978 graves. Quintana said 3,024 informal graves contained 4,874 bodies — and thousands of bone fragments. At least 40,000 people have disappeared in Mexico since 2006. Officials believe the majority were victims of organized-crime groups. But in many cases, local or state authorities might have been complicit. Until recently, most of the search was carried out by relatives of the victims, who have banded together in groups to dig in barren desert plains and on forest-covered hills. They have complained for years that the government has ignored their requests for help. MARY BETH SHERIDAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

REDSKINS | ANALYSIS

Well, defense looks good

There is quiet optimism present in the offices of Redskins Park, a belief that Washington’s defense could be special this season, good enough when paired with a ball-control offense to carry the team to a playoff berth. But that rosy outlook is not common elsewhere, and many national analysts have ranked the Redskins, who were 7-9 last year, among the NFL’s worst teams. With that uncertainty GETTY IMAGES

in mind, here is a look at the roster heading into Sunday’s 1 p.m. opener at Philadelphia. KAREEM COPELAND (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Case Keenum, above, will start, with rookie Dwayne Haskins awaiting an opportunity. The Redskins’ early schedule is brutal with the Eagles, Cowboys, Bears and Patriots on tap in the first five weeks (the Giants provide a possible respite in Week 4). If the Redskins get off to a 2-3 or 1-4 start, it will be hard to keep a first-round quarterback like Haskins on the bench.

Adrian Peterson, above, is coming off a 1,000-yard season, but coach Jay Gruden said Monday that “the offense, carries-wise, will probably go through” Derrius Guice. The biggest question will be: Can this group stay healthy? Peterson is 34, Guice was sidelined with a torn ACL last season, and all-purpose back Chris Thompson missed 12 games in the past two years.

Paul Richardson Jr., above, probably will be joined by rookie Terry McLaurin, a third-round pick, as the starters on the outside following the release over the weekend of Josh Doctson, with Trey Quinn in the slot. Two other rookies with potential — Kelvin Harmon and Steven Sims Jr. — made the team and could see their roles expand as the season goes on.

Jordan Reed, above, was having a strong camp before he had a concussion against Atlanta in the third preseason game. It was at least the sixth concussion of his career. Reed, 29, is the offense’s most dynamic weapon, but it is unclear when he will be available. Behind him are Vernon Davis and Jeremy Sprinkle. The group is better at catching the ball than blocking.

Center Chase Roullier, right guard Brandon Scherff and right tackle Morgan Moses are solid. But the holdout of star left tackle Trent Williams has caused chaos. Donald Penn, a former Pro Bowler, was signed to fill in for Williams, but he is 36 and played only four games in 2018. Ereck Flowers, above, was signed to transition from tackle to left guard, but that is a work in progress.

Defensive line

Safety

This is clearly the club’s most talented position group. Recent first-round picks Jonathan Allen, above, and Daron Payne are stars just beginning their careers. Matt Ioannidis may be one of the most underrated players in the league and posted 7½ sacks last year. Tim Settle and Caleb Brantley are quality backups.

Ryan Kerrigan, above, is consistency personified: Now in his ninth season, he has never missed a game and has never had fewer than 7½ sacks. On the opposite side of the formation will be the tandem of third-year man Ryan Anderson and first-round pick Montez Sweat, a quick, long, athletic rookie.

The position is a concern after the departures of Zach Brown and Mason Foster and Reuben Foster’s torn ACL in the offseason. Second-year pro Shaun Dion Hamilton beat out Brown last season and will fill one spot. Jon Bostic, above, has bounced around the NFL at 28 but already is making the Redskins’ defensive calls.

This might be the club’s deepest spot, with Josh Norman and Quinton Dunbar, above, starting on the outside and Fabian Moreau in the slot — just as in 2018. Veteran Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie signed in March, and seventh-round rookie Jimmy Moreland was the defense’s breakout star in the preseason.

The Redskins added Landon Collins, above, in free agency as a playmaker in the secondary and a force around the line of scrimmage. The Redskins will count on him to make an immediate impact. Collins pairs with the rangy Montae Nicholson, who had a strong camp. Deshazor Everett provides depth.

Bencic will face No. 23 Donna Vekic in the quarters. Osaka was the second top seed eliminated in less than 24 hours. Novak Djokovic stopped playing against Stan Wawrinka on Sunday night because of a left shoulder injury. Djokovic was trailing 6-4, 7-5, 2-1 when he retired — and was jeered as he left the court. He later said the pain had been “constant for weeks.” No. 2 Rafael Nadal played Marin Cilic late Monday. (AP)

GM-less Texans fumble big trades

Need a little help with your move?

ANALYSIS Operating without a general manager is not going particularly well for coach Bill O’Brien and the Houston Texans. That was the nearly unanimous opinion as the NFL digested Saturday’s twin major trades made by the Texans on roster-cutdown day. The Texans surrendered too much, the consensus maintains, in sending two first-round draft picks and a second-rounder to the Dolphins as part of their trade for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Stills. And they didn’t get enough in return, many observers contend, when they dealt three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to the Seahawks for two players and a third-round pick. The negative evaluations of the Clowney trade became even harsher Sunday with the news that the Texans are paying Clowney a $7 million signing bonus as part of the deal, with the Seahawks picking up the remaining $8 million of his 2019 income. “You’d be hard pressed to find a more lopsided trade,” J.I. Halsell, a salary cap expert who is a former agent and league and

team executive, wrote on Twitter. “The return [or lack there of] for Clowney, coupled with the Texans paying 7 [million] on top of it should get their GM fired. Oh but that’s right, they don’t have one.” O’Brien has had more say over roster construction since the Texans fired Brian Gaine as GM in June and didn’t replace him. The GM-less Texans are struggling to find their way. Tunsil is one of the game’s better young left tackles. But was he worth the Texans’ first-round picks in the next two drafts, plus a secondrounder in 2021? “The price the Texans just paid for a LT,” former Eagles and Browns executive Joe Banner wrote on Twitter, “is what some teams have paid for some of the best young QBs in the NFL.” MARK MASKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NO MISSED BATHS INSTALLATION IN AS LITTLE AS ONE DAY1

Ross fares poorly; Eaton limps off NATIONALS 7, METS 3 When Joe Ross walked off the mound with the Mets batting in the fourth inning Monday, the big question wasn’t whether the Nationals could rally to win. The question was whether he had built up enough credit in previous outings to remain the fifth starter. He didn’t make his best case in a 7-3 loss at Nationals Park, allowing seven runs on eight hits to help end the club’s winning streak at four. Washington’s offense didn’t do much, either, getting nothing off Mets starter Noah Syndergaard in seven innings, going down 16 batters in a row at one point. And so, the Nationals fell 6 1 /2 games behind Atlanta in the NL East on a day that also raised other concerns. Right fielder Adam Eaton left after

two innings, and manager Dave Martinez said he was concerned about a potential knee or hamstring problem. Eaton will undergo an MRI. Ross was followed by Austin Voth and Erick Fedde out of the bullpen. Both are candidates to start, along with Jeremy Hellickson, if the Nationals want to test their options behind Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Patrick Corbin and Aníbal Sánchez. Ross is currently scheduled to start Saturday in Atlanta. Ross, who is 3-4 with a 6.17 ERA, had been impressive in recent weeks as the fifth starter. Monday’s start was his first since Aug. 24, an eight-day layoff. And he was 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his five outings before this one. The Nationals won each of those games. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

You don’t need to buy fancy water

Stick with whole grains Their health benefits have been touted for years, but most of us don’t eat enough NUTRITION The government has been promoting whole grains as part of a healthy diet since 2000, but a July study from the CDC shows we’re consuming less than half of the recommended amount of whole grains. According to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Dietary Guidelines for 2015-2020, adults should consume six servings of grains daily, at least 50% of which should be whole grains. But the recent CDC report reveals that whole grains are just 15.8% of total grain intake for the average American. Grains include oats, wheat, rice, barley, rye, bulgur, buckwheat, amaranth, farro, quinoa, millet, sorghum, teff, triticale and spelt. In their whole form, they contain three parts: the bran, the endosperm and the germ. Most of the products in grocery stores — bread, pasta, white rice, pastries — are made of refined grains. “Refined grains

are grains in which the bran and germ have been removed to help extend shelf life and vary texture and flavor,” says Kelly Hogan, a registered dietitian. Removing the bran and germ also removes most of the fiber and nutrients. The bran is rich in fiber, B vitamins and antioxidants. The germ is loaded with vitamins, minerals, proteins and phytochemicals — plant-based nutrients. The endosperm contains starchy carbs, with only a little bit of nutrient content. Eating whole grains helps ensure you’re getting fiber and nutrients that support “countless body processes that regulate our day-to-day function,” says Jessica Cording, a registered dietitian and nutrition coach. Fiber keeps you full for longer and lowers the risk of health problems like heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. “Fiber found in whole grains, especially soluble fiber, has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels,” Hogan says.

To find whole grains, check the label It’s not always easy to differentiate between whole-grain and refinedgrain products, so it’s best to check labels. Even rustic-looking bread may be made with refined flour. J.B. Wheat: As you look for wholewheat bread, pastas and crackers, compare items. Make sure a whole grain is the first ingredient listed. Rice: Skip white rice, which is the rice grain without its hull, bran or germ. Whole-grain rice can be black, red or purple, as well as brown. Corn: When purchasing cornmeal, grits, corn cakes and tortillas, look for “ whole grain corn” or “whole grain cornmeal” on the label. Oats: Steel cut and rolled oats are healthy whole-grain options. In the case of instant oats, which are still whole grain, make sure there’s no added sugar — or skip altogether. Other options: Other varieties classified as whole grains include barley, rye, quinoa and buckwheat.

Vida Fitness offers free Zumba, 10 a.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon Triangle Freshfarm Market

The B vitamins in whole grains, including thiamine, niacin and riboflavin, are key metabolism aids. Folate, another B vitamin, assists in building red blood cells. The phytochemicals in whole grains fight inflammation. Research shows whole-grain intake can reduce the risk of death from inflammatory diseases (not including heart disease or cancer). But a 2016 BMJ meta-analysis found evidence that eating whole grains can lead to “reduced risk of coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and total cancer, and mortality from all causes.” It’s best to try to get the vitamins and minerals you need from whole grains rather than through supplements or fortified products. Melina Jampolis, a physician nutritionist specialist, says, “In general, getting your nutrients as they naturally occur, and in less-processed foods, helps ensure that you get all the nutrients you need on a daily basis.”

The idea that alkaline water promotes health has been around for decades. New marketing promotes it as a performance-enhancing sports drink that’s at least double the price of bottled water. Global sales of alkaline water are expected to reach $1 billion this year. But there’s no solid evidence that it boosts energy, strengthens bones or fights cancer, or is any better than other bottled water — or tap water. Instead, focus on consuming water that’s filtered and contains minerals, and making sure you’re getting enough. In most areas of the country, you can safely and inexpensively rely on tap water to fulfill your fluid needs. You’ll be doing the environment a favor, too: Less bottled water means less plastic waste. CHRISTY BRISSETTE (FOR TWP)

He left first, and now I can’t leave Q. My husband and I are in limbo. He had an affair, we went to counseling, nothing seemed to change, and I still feel like I can’t trust him anymore. He keeps telling me I have “one foot out the door,” which he feels is an excuse for me to treat him poorly and not do the work of this marriage. Lately he has said, “Just go ahead and divorce me. What are you waiting for?” But I feel like it was he who chose to check out of this marriage and break our commitment. Being the one to initiate the divorce is bringing up all kinds of guilt in me, and the fear that I would look like the bad guy, which I don’t think he deserves. I didn’t leave him; he left me. I feel stuck. If you would be better off divorced, then the idea of who “deserves” to appear a certain way in the process is sort of beside the point, right? You are only as stuck as you want to be. When you say, “Nothing seemed to change,” I don’t know if that means he still has problematic behavior, his desire to repair the damage isn’t genuine, your hurt over the infidelity still hasn’t lessened, or the underlying problems of your marriage still

remain unaddressed. But being in a marriage stalemate need not mean a life stalemate, and having uncomfortable feelings about the process — though understandable — shouldn’t be allowed to paralyze you. That would only let you sabotage yourself further. So, if your marriage still has a shot, take it. If it’s time to end it, give yourself the gift of moving forward. You deserve it. Individual therapy could be a helpful support in reminding you of that.

car accident two months ago and it has made me rethink my entire life’s path. I am 34, stuck in a field that I don’t like (though I have a lot of student debt for it) with terrible hours, never able to do the traveling I like, never spending enough time with my friends, never able to prioritize dating or meeting anyone. I feel like this is a wake-up call and I want to chuck everything. My family says I’m just grieving and will feel differently in a bit, and should not make any big changes. First, I’m truly sorry for the loss of your friend. It’s true that chucking everything could end up leaving you worse off than before, but this wakeup call is important to heed nonetheless. Grieving is not “just” grieving — and it can help us reevaluate our lives in meaningful ways. There’s a sweet spot between throwing away your career versus remaining on autopilot in an unsatisfying situation that will leave you with regrets. The key is accepting that it will take time, research and effort to carve out a new path, and making a commitment to doing so. From taking classes to developing a side gig to becoming an independent contractor, from making a lateral move to changing offices, there is an escape path for you. Being mindful in your planning will help bring to life the changes you want. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Pulling all the right strings Netflix’s ‘Dark Crystal’ series is magical return to Jim Henson’s world

Sitcom legend Valerie Harper dies at age 80

NETFLIX

TV REVIEW See how we sift and scroll through these endless TV menus and grids, scoffing at what the algorithms recommend, defaulting yet again to old sitcom reruns. In theory we want to be swept up in something new, but we’re sometimes not very good about trying new things. Sometimes the biggest challenge is a genre bias — to watch a show that looks unbearably hokey. Too elfy, too childish, too derivative. This may have been the problem 37 years ago, when the brilliant Muppet master Jim Henson and his colleagues poured their creative energies into a full-on fantasy film that was a shade too frightening for a kid audience. Critics admired its technical achievements but disliked the Tolkien-lite feel of it; parents steered clear; lunchboxes and other merchandise went unpurchased. Fans, however, cared for “The Dark Crystal.” They hoped for more stories about the world of Thra and the tribes of Gelflings who defend it against the greedy, alligator/vulture-faced gang called the Skeksis. Finally, the right sort of sorcery occurred: Netflix and its pots of gold. Lo, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” arrived Friday — a wondrously realized, 10-episode prequel overseen by Lisa Henson, daughter of Jim and CEO

The “Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” heroes are Gelflings (which are not the same as elves, thank you very much).

of his namesake production house. Instantly captivating, expertly paced and thrillingly fun to watch, “Age of Resistance” checks off a number of boxes that viewers claim to seek in their next favorite TV show, especially this one: Is there a show that will take me away from it all? To be clear, escapism is not the same as being a “mindless” watching experience. “Age of Resistance” can be as complicated or easy as the viewer wishes it to be, but, like all fantasy tales, it comes on fast and strong with a number of characters, plot threads and all sorts of creatures and cultures to sort through. Set long before the events of the original film, “Age of Resistance” finds the ruling order of

$2.2B

Skeksis (voiced by Andy Samberg, Awkwafina, Mark Hamill, Simon Pegg, Keegan-Michael Key and more) in full plunder of Thra’s resources. The Skeksis rule because they long ago seized a giant crystal that kept Thra and its inhabitants in a state of harmony. Having sapped the crystal of most of its life-giving force, the Skeksis have now started sacrificing Gelflings to it. As the crystal’s ancient guardian, Aughra (Donna Kimball), awakens from a spell that the Skeksis put her under, a group of rebellious Gelflings (voiced by Taron Egerton, Nathalie Emmanuel and Anya Taylor-Joy, among others) must band together to restore the crystal and overthrow the Skeksis.

That’s a somewhat oversimplified summary, but what it doesn’t convey is the joy evident in every frame of “Age of Resistance,” where puppetry skills and computer-generated artistry combine to exult in seamless perfection. The series also features obvious metaphors that both address and stir current anxieties: The Skeksis are too greedy to realize they’re destroying the planet as the crystal begins its irreparable darkening — in other words, they deny climate change. Intentionally or not, “Age of Resistance” sports a number of bumper stickers on the back of its proverbial Subaru — “COEXIST” being the primary message, beautifully delivered. 1939-2019 Valerie Harper, who scored guffaws, stole hearts and busted TV taboos as the brash, selfdeprecating Rhoda Morgenstern on back-to-back hit sitcoms in the 1970s, has died at age 80. Longtime family friend Dan Watt confirmed Harper died Friday, adding the family wasn’t immediately releasing further details. She had been battling cancer for years, and her husband said recently he had been advised to put her in hospice care. She won three consecutive Emmys (1971-73) as a supporting actress on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and another for outstanding lead actress for “Rhoda,” which ran from 197478. Beyond awards, she was immortalized — and typecast — for playing one of television’s most beloved characters, a best friend the equal of Ethel Mertz and Ed Norton in TV’s sidekick pantheon. In recent years, Harper’s other appearances included “The Simpsons” and “2 Broke Girls.” “It is indeed a sad day,” Harper’s “Mary Tyler Moore Show” co-star Gavin MacLeod wrote in an email. “My life has been so enriched by having the experience of working with Valerie and calling her a friend. … The thing I remember so much about Val is that she loved her family, she loved the actors that she worked with and she loved the underdog. She was always helping someone.” JOHN ROGERS (AP)

“Billie is ’bout to get so much richer by suing Nylon Germany.” @BROKENSTYIES_, tweeting about Billie

Eilish’s criticism of the German edition of Nylon magazine. On Friday, the outlet released its “digital prodigy” cover series, with one depicting Eilish as a bald and bare shouldered robot. The 17-year-old slammed the illustration for making her “shirtless,” and said she “did not consent.” Nylon has since apologized and deleted the image from Instagram.

“It ain’t a rivalry, it’s a sisterhood. And I can’t wait to see them compete for the next decade.” @1241AM, praising Naomi Osaka, right, and Coco Gauff, left, for their sportsmanship following Osaka’s U.S. Open win over Gauff on Saturday. Osaka asked an emotional Gauff, 15, to stay for the post-match interview, usually reserved for the winner. Gauff accepted, thanking Osaka and the audience. After Gauff exited, Osaka took the opportunity to commend her and said to Gauff’s parents, “You guys raised an amazing player.”

“This marketing blunder will be studied in business schools for a long time.”

@MACHMINOTAUR, joking about research agency DARPA’s Wednesday request for “underground urban tunnels” to “host research & experimentation.” DARPA’s odd stipulation that it needed answers by Friday had many Twitter users wondering what the agency was planning. Others actually suggested spaces, like the tunnels below Denver International Airport.

@MEL_ANKOLY, blasting Dior for its now-deleted “Sauvage” cologne campaign with Johnny Depp. The ad was slammed for using the French term for “savage,” a slur for Native Americans, and including imagery of a Native American dancing. Depp’s inclusion was also criticized — he claims to have Native American ancestry, though there’s no documented proof he does.

“I looked into her eyes and saw the beautiful, sweet, unguarded, welcoming human being that she is.”

Singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding married art dealer Caspar Jopling in a lavish ceremony Saturday in Yorkshire, England, with friends Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Sienna Miller in attendance. The 32-year-old Goulding, who was wearing a white custom Chloe gown, arrived at the gothic York Minster cathedral with her long veil over her face. Her attendants struggled with the wind, though, as they wrangled the high-neck, long-sleeve dress. Goulding and the 27-year-old Jopling, who has family ties to the area, got engaged in August 2018.
