Nationals Park was one of John McNamara’s favorite places to visit.
Shakespeare, and was always in charge of providing Motown music on road trips. Last year, McNamara and Chamblee read a New York Times article about a man who traveled across the country to flush his childhood friend’s ashes down the toilet of each major league ballpark. McNamara joked that Chamblee should do that for him one day. She agreed to go to each stadium but not go near any toilets, so he simplified his request: “See
THE BALTIMORE SUN VIA AP
REGION John McNamara waited years for a major league baseball team to return to Washington. He attended the Washington Senators’ final home game on Sept. 30, 1971, and kept his ticket, faded by dust and time, in a desk drawer inside his home office. His wife, Andrea Chamblee, now describes him as “somewhat reluctant Orioles fan” who wanted a Washington team to root for. So when Nationals Park opened in March 2008, three years after the franchise returned to the city, it became a special place for McNamara. “It was always fun to come here and enjoy the magic of the park,” Chamblee said inside the stadium Saturday night, remembering how much her husband enjoyed Nationals games. On June 28, McNamara was one of five Capital Gazette journalists killed in a shooting at the newspaper’s office in Annapolis. He was 56 years old, a lifelong sports reporter who could write about any subject, recited

Friends and family joined her in the Nationals Park stands. Chamblee told the story about the New York Times article and how she wouldn’t be flushing any ashes down any toilets. They all laughed. They all cried. They brought their own music, but the stadium speakers were already blaring some of McNamara’s favorites, including Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. McNamara and Chamblee used to come to five games a season, his schedule never permitting more, and it will never be the same without him. But now Chamblee thinks she will need to visit every so often. JESSE DOUGHERTY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MoCo looks to condoms to fight STIs in schools MONTGOMERY COUNTY With sexually transmitted infections surging in Montgomery County, leaders are for the first time offering condoms in four high school health clinics and considering expanding to more than 20 other schools. The move comes as Montgomery looks to reverse a spike in gonorrhea and chlamydia that the county’s health officer has called “a public health crisis.” School and county officials say access to condoms is being paired with education about sexually transmitted infections.
The rise in infections mirrors national trends, officials said, and puts Montgomery at its highest level in a decade. “When you’re seeing numbers increase in the double digits and young people involved, that increases the sense of urgency,” said Travis Gayles, the county’s chief of public health services. Chlamydia cases countywide climbed 17.5 percent from 2016 to 2017, and gonorrhea 29 percent, officials said. Those one-year jumps were nearly twice as high as Maryland’s overall increases. Cars stopped on the shoulder of Route 50 and hundreds of area residents found spots on the overpasses to wait to wave goodbye to Sen. John McCain as his funeral procession made its way to Annapolis. Just past 12:30 p.m., the motorcade carrying the late senator from Arizona left D.C., headed for the U.S. Naval Academy, where McCain was buried Sunday. Ramps and segments of the Beltway and Route 50 closed to allow the procession. local Cardinal Wuerl faces call to resign after two scandals come to light THE DISTRICT A man stood up Sunday and yelled, “Shame on you” as Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl addressed the sex abuse scandal rocking the Catholic Church and asked parishioners to pray for Pope Francis as he deals with the problem. Commuting on the run As Metro continues to falter, commuters around the region are starting to lace up With summer Metro work, Kimberly Wattrick began running to work from her Capitol Hill home to Dupont Circle.
More and more are commuting on foot as Metro continues to struggle with reliability.
ASTRID RIECKEN PHOTOS (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
TRANSPORTATION To be a D.C. commuter is to routinely sit on a delayed train or in a car stuck in traffic and stare wistfully out the window, thinking, “I could probably get there faster on foot.” Then, there are the rare people who take that observation to its logical conclusion: Why not just get there on foot? Kimberly Wattrick is one of those people. Last month, at the start of Metro’s two-week track project on the Orange, Blue, and Silver lines, Wattrick glumly considered the options for getting from her Capitol Hill home to her Dupont Circle office the next morning. She needed to be in and ready to work by 8:30 a.m. With single-tracking, bus shuttles and unpredictable transfers, she’d need to budget nearly an hour and a half to make a 3.5-mile commute on Metro. The ratio between the commuting time and the modest distance seemed absurd to her. And then Wattrick had an idea. “I was like, ‘Why don’t I just run to work?’ ” she said. “I’d heard of people run-commuting. I’d never done it before. But I thought, I’ll give it a try and see how it goes.” She packed a small hiking backpack with the bare essentials for work — swapping out the water bladder for a dress and flats — and she embarked on her inaugural trip. “I’m a pretty fast runner,” said Wattrick, 37, who works in corporate finance and owns a running apparel store on Capitol Hill. “I had no problem beating Metro.” Thirty-five minutes, door to door, including time stopped at traffic lights. She didn’t just beat the time it would have taken her to navigate Metro’s single-tracking
disruptions. It was slightly faster than her normal commute in the best of circumstances. And just like that, Wattrick became a run-commuter. As public transit woes and increasing traffic congestion force people to consider increasingly unconventional commuting modes, some are trying a more straightforward alternative:
Man charged by D.C. police in nine burglaries in 22 days last month
“It’s easier to justify to my wife, because we’re saving money on Metro fares or on gas and parking.” JEFFREY REDFERN, a lawyer who run-commutes from D.C. to Ballston — a trip that is 8.3 miles each way
commuting on foot. And not a leisurely walk to work, but a hardcore run-commute over sizable distances. According to a report by the fitness-oriented tech company Strava on the annual exercise habits of its users, the number of run-commute trips increased by 51 percent from 2016 to 2017, with the number of people reporting that they commute by running at least occasionally up 43 percent. The average run-commute trip, according to Strava, is 4.5 miles. “It’s really not that difficult. You just have to think ahead,” said Courtney Dredden Carter, director of diversity and inclusion at a large D.C. law firm. She run-commutes to work several times a month. “It saves me time. I get my run in, and I also arrive at my office without having to deal with the bus. It’s a twofer.” The logistics can be a little complicated. Carter either packs a bag with her work clothes, or she brings several work outfits in advance that she stows at her desk. But the run commute comes with significant advantages. It saves time. It’s a reliable prework endorphin rush. And it’s a built-in solution to the problem of commuting in humid D.C. summer weather. “If you run before work, and then shower, and then commute to work, and you’re just getting sweaty again,” Carter said. Better to just shower upon arrival. As for the awkwardness that can arise from walking into a fancy office building in workout clothes while others stream in their corporate workwear, Carter has a solution for that, too. “I kind of don’t care,” she said. “It doesn’t really faze me.” MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)
ANSWER LINE
Why does it take so long for doors to open? Q. Red Line rider Ben Proshek asked us what’s behind the annoying five- or six-second wait for the doors to open after trains stop at a platform. A. This question comes up often. The Post’s Dr. Gridlock gave part of the answer in a column four years ago: The driver’s seat is on the right, so if the platform is on the left, the driver has to get up to look out the left side window and then hit a button on a panel that’s also on the left. But one Metro driver who didn’t want to be named because they’re not authorized to speak publicly said there’s more to it than that. The delay is “a safety precaution Metro instituted when there was a wave of operators opening the door off the platform or on the wrong side,” the driver said. So now operators have to look out the window for three to five seconds upon stopping to make sure all of the train is fully on the platform and to make sure they know which side the doors should open. On all trains, they have to hit a button to open the doors. But on the new 7000-series trains, they also have to verify that’s what they want to do by hitting another button. A January 2017 post explaining the delays by Greater Greater Washington noted trains can be set to open the doors automatically, but operators have had to do it manually after four incidents in which the doors automatically opened when they shouldn’t have. Coal country hails plan
weekendd re win ANNAPOLIS, MD.
Those most affected by coal pollution risks cheer Trump’s rollback of Obama-era rules
A horse-drawn caisson carrying Sen. John McCain’s casket led a procession of mourners from the U.S. Naval Academy’s chapel to its cemetery Sunday in Annapolis, Md., following a private service. The senator’s widow, Cindy, and his children were among those who walked behind the caisson. Joining them were family and friends as well as members of McCain’s Class of 1958 and military leaders. GRANT TOWN, W.VA. It’s coal people like miner Steve Knotts, 62, who make West Virginia Trump Country. So it was no surprise that President Trump chose the state to announce his plan rolling back Obama-era pollution controls on coal-fired power plants. Trump left one thing out of his remarks, though: Northern West Virginia coal country will be ground zero for increased deaths and illnesses from the rollback on regulation of harmful emission from the nation’s coal power plants. An analysis done by his own Environmental P rotection Agency concludes that the plan would lead to a greater number of people here dying prematurely, and suffering health problems that they otherwise would not have, than elsewhere in the country, when compared to health impacts of the Obama plan. Knotts, a coal miner for 35 years, isn’t fazed when he hears that warning, a couple of days after Trump’s West Virginia rally. He says the last thing people in coal country want is the government slapping down more controls on coal — and the air here in the remote West Virginia mountains seems fine to him. “People here have had it with other people telling us what we need. We know what we need. We need a job,” Knotts said at a Circle K in a tiny town between two coal mines, and 9 miles down the road from a coal power plant, the Grant Town plant. The sky around Grant Town is bright blue. The mountains are a dazzling green. Paw Paw Creek gurgles past the town.
Family and friends say final goodbye to McCain
Northern West Virginia and the neighboring part of Pennsylvania would be hit hardest by Trump’s coal plan.
Clean-air controls since the 1980s largely turned off the columns of black soot that used to rise from coal smokestacks. The regulations slashed the national death rates from coal-fired power plants substantially. These days pollutants rise from smoke stacks as gases, before solidifying into fine particles small enough to pass through lungs and into bloodstreams. An EPA analysis says those pollutants would increase under Trump’s plan, when compared to what would happen under the Obama plan. And that, it says, would lead to thousands more heart attacks, asthma problems and other illnesses than would otherwise have occurred. About 160 miles south of Grant Town, near Charleston, shop owner Doris Keller figures that if Trump thinks something’s for the best, that’s good enough for her. “I just know this. I like Donald Trump and I think that he’s doing the right thing,” said
Killed by coal pollution Nationwide: The EPA says 350 to 1,500 more people would die each year in the U.S. under Trump’s coal plan. But it’s the northern two-thirds of West Virginia and the neighboring part of Pennsylvania that would be hit hardest, by far, according to Trump’s EPA. In coal country: Trump’s rollback would kill an extra 1.4 to 2.4 people a year for every 100,000 people in those hardest-hit areas, compared to under the Obama plan. For West Virginia’s 1.8 million people, that would be equal to at least a couple dozen additional deaths a year.
Keller, who turned out Aug. 21 to support Trump when he promoted his rollback proposal. Trump’s Affordable Clean Energy program would dismantle President Barack Obama’s 2015 Clean Power Plan, which has been caught up in court battles without yet being implemented.
Malaysian lesbian couple publicly caned after conviction in Islamic law court
The Obama plan targeted climate-changing emissions from power plants, especially coal. It would have increased federal regulation of emissions and broadly promoted natural gas, solar power and other cleaner energy. Trump’s plan would cede much of the oversight of existing coalfired power plants and drop official promotion of cleaner energy. Individual states largely would decide how much to regulate coal power plants in their borders. Political leaders in coal states are in no position to be the ones charged with enforcing publichealth protections on surviving coal-fired power plants, said Vivian Stockman of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition. “Our state is beholden to coal. Our politicians are beholden to coal,” Stockman said outside Trump’s West Virginia rally, where she was protesting. “Meanwhile, our people are being poisoned.” ELLEN KNICKMEYER AND JOHN RABY (AP)

U.N.: Trips across Mediterranean fall But agency report says more risks by traffickers make journeys deadlier IMMIGRATION The U.N. refugee agency says people smugglers are taking greater risks to ferry their human cargo toward Europe as Libya’s coast guard intercepts more and more boats carrying migrants, increasing the likelihood that those on board may die during the Mediterranean journeys. That’s one of the key findings from the latest UNHCR report about efforts to reach Europe. The report, released early Monday and titled “Desperate Journeys,” says that even though the number of crossings and deaths has plunged compared to recent years, the voyage is more deadly. The report says 2,276 people died last year while trying to cross, or one death for every 42 arrivals. This year, it’s 1,095 deaths, or one death out of every 18 arrivals. In June alone, the proportion hit one death for every seven arrivals. On the central Mediterranean route so far this year, there have been 10 separate incidents in which 50 or more people died — most after departing from Libya. Seven of those incidents have been since June alone,

Libyan authorities intercepted or rescued 18,400 migrants between August 2017 and July 2018.
UNHCR said. Libyan authorities intercepted or rescued 18,400 people between August last year and July this year — a 38 percent increase from the same period of 2016 to 2017. Arrivals by sea from Libya to Europe plummeted 82 percent in those comparable periods, to 30,800 in the more recent one. Vincent Cochetel, UNHCR’s special envoy for the central Mediterranean, said the drop in departures means that traffickers attempt to “monetize their investment, which means they have to exploit more people. That results in more cases of slavery, forced labor, prostitution of those people — because they [smugglers] want to make money on those people.” JAMEY KEATEN (AP)

Myanmar court jails reporters for seven years YANGON, MYANMAR A Myanmar court sentenced two Reuters journalists to seven years in prison Monday on charges of illegal possession of official documents, a ruling met with international condemnation that will add to outrage over the military’s human rights abuses against Rohingya Muslims. Wa Lone, 32, above, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, had been reporting on the brutal crackdown on the Rohingya when they were arrested and charged with violating the colonial-era Official Secrets Act, punishable by up to 14 years in prison. They had pleaded not guilty, contending that they were framed by police. “Today is a sad day for Myanmar, Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, and the press everywhere,” Stephen J. Adler, Reuters’ editor-in-chief, said in a statement. The case has drawn worldwide attention as an example of how democratic reforms in longisolated Myanmar have stalled under the civilian government of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, which took power in 2016. Though the military, which ruled the country for a halfcentury, maintains control of several key ministries, Suu Kyi’s rise to government had raised hopes for an accelerated transition to full democracy. Her stance on the Rohingya crisis has disappointed many former admirers. VICTORIA MILKO AND AUNG NAING SOE(AP)

A massive fire engulfed the National Museum of Brazil in Rio, devastating its collection of nearly 20 million items.
Rio museum fire like a cultural ‘lobotomy’ Brazilians outraged as blaze destroys trove of prized historic artifacts RIO DE JANEIRO Before the concept of countries existed, Luzia walked the broad savanna of what is now southcentral Brazil. Her remains were buried in the Vermelha Cave about 11,500 years ago, until they were found and studied in the 20th century. Researchers later said her existence challenged the basic understanding of how humans migrated, and when. Luzia’s remains are among nearly 20 million items feared incinerated after a blaze roared through Rio de Janeiro’s National Museum on Sunday, in an
inferno that Brazilian officials and scientists are describing as an unbearable erasure of human history potentially caused by years of neglect. The fire was like “a lobotomy of the Brazilian memory,” said Marina Silva, a former environment minister and candidate in the upcoming presidential election, according to The Guardian. President Michel Temer said the loss was “incalculable to Brazil” and has directed the museum to be rebuilt using public and private funds, he said Monday. The museum is the biggest natural history museum in Latin America. Police clad in riot gear held back an angry, massive crowd calling for Temer’s resignation at the smoldering museum. BBC
reporter Katy Watson said “thousands” at the scene blamed the fire on years of austerity measures for lack of funding and modernization efforts at the museum. The museum, which celebrated its 200th anniversary this year, housed priceless items of global and regional history, stretching from a several-ton meteorite to dinosaur bones and an Egyptian sarcophagus. Also feared lost are items kept by Dom Pedro I, who declared Brazil independent from Portugal in 1825. “It is an unbearable catastrophe. It is 200 years of this country’s heritage. It is 200 years of memory,” Luiz Duarte, a vice director of the museum, told TV Globo. ALEX HORTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
New York’s Village Voice falls silent The Village Voice, the Pulitzer Prize-winning alternative weekly known for its muckraking investigations, exhaustive arts criticism, naughty personal ads and neurosisladen cartoons, has gone out of business after 63 years. Its publisher, Peter Barbey, announced Friday that the paper would be ceasing publication altogether, a year after it went to digital-only. Eight of the Voice’s 18 remaining staffers were laid off. Others stayed to digitize its print archive. The Voice was the country’s first alternative newsweekly, founded in Greenwich Village in 1955 by a group that included writer Norman Mailer. It once had a weekly circulation of 250,000 and was home to some of New York’s best investigative journalists and music writers. (AP)

Egypt finds ancient Nile Delta village
Archeologists in Egypt have unearthed one of the oldest villages ever found in the Nile Delta, with remains dating back to before the pharaohs. The Neolithic site was found in Tell el-Samara, about 87 miles north of Cairo, the Antiquities Ministry said Sunday. Chief archaeologist Frederic Gio said his team found silos containing animal bones and food, indicating human habitation as early as 5,000 B.C. That would be some 2,500 years before the Giza pyramids were built. (AP)

SUPREME COURT As Sen. Chuck Schumer pondered the judicial nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, he could barely contain his anger. The New York Democrat viewed the choice as “among the most political in history” and could not think of another nominee “more designed to divide us.” Schumer was not talking about President Trump’s nomination of Kavanaugh to be a Supreme Court justice. It was 2004, and Schumer helped lead the Democrats’ questioning of Kavanaugh to move from the George W. Bush White House to a federal circuit judgeship. Schumer and his Democratic colleagues cast him as an extreme conservative and were so effective that they blocked Kavanaugh’s nomination for three years. Now, however, as Kavanaugh prepares for the start of his confirmation hearings today, Democrats are still searching for a strategy that could stop his ascension to the high court. Schumer said his concerns from 2004 “are still the case” and have only grown as a result of Kavanaugh’s judicial rulings for 12 years. “He has a very nice smile, but an inch below the surface, he is a hard-right warrior,” Schumer said in an interview. Then, as now, Kavanaugh symbolizes to Democrats how partisanship has overwhelmed the process for judicial nominations. Trump’s selection of him
to fill the seat vacated by Justice Anthony Kennedy, for whom Kavanaugh once served as a clerk, underscores a long-standing Republican goal to infuse the federal courts with judges who will strictly interpret the Constitution and seal the high court’s conservative direction on issues such as abortion and regulations. This time, the Democrats’ stalling tactics of 2004 are unlikely to work. Schumer and his Democratic colleagues face a rules change enacted last year by Republicans, under which it takes only 51 votes to stop a filibuster on a Supreme Court justice rather than the 60 votes required in the past. Republicans controlled 51 seats before the recent death of Sen. John McCain, whose replacement is expected to be named soon by Arizona’s Republican governor. And Republicans have used their own strategies to control the flow of documents that might inform harsher questioning. The White House has said that records from Kavanaugh’s time as Bush’s staff secretary do not need to be released, and thousands of documents from his time in the counsel’s office are being withheld by Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee as “committee confidential,” meaning all senators may view them but cannot publicly distribute them. Democrats said the process is being manipulated by Republicans to withhold vital information

and have urged that hearings be postponed until all relevant documents have been released. When Bush in 2003 first nominated Kavanaugh to be a U.S. appellate judge, Kavanaugh’s work on partisan missions put him at odds with Democrats. He worked for independent counsel Kenneth Starr and laid out the grounds in 1998 for impeaching President Bill Clinton; he acted on behalf of Bush in the Florida recount in the 2000 presidential race; he promoted conservative judicial nominees as Bush’s associate counsel; and as Bush’s staff secretary, he helped shape presidential policies. “As I look through all of the different issues that you have been involved in as an attorney in public service and the private

sector, it seems that you are the Zelig or Forrest Gump of Republican politics,” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said at the 2004 hearing, which has received relatively little notice during the current examination of Kavanaugh’s record. “You show up at every scene of the crime.” Like Schumer, Durbin said in an interview that his concerns about Kavanaugh have only increased. “He has Republican blood coursing through his veins,” Durbin said. “Clearly, he has more judicial experience than when I first ran into him,” he said, but those 12 years have yielded mostly conservative decisions. “His pattern of voting is very clear.” MICHAEL KRANISH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
POLITICS President Trump started his Labor Day with an attack on a top union leader, lashing out after criticism from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. Trump tweeted Monday that Trumka “represented his union poorly on television this weekend.” He added: “it is easy to see why unions are doing so poorly.” The president’s attack came after Trumka appeared on “Fox News Sunday” over the weekend, where he said efforts to overhaul the North American Free Trade Agreement should include Canada. Trumka, whose organization is an umbrella group for most unions, said the economies of the U.S., Canada and Mexico are “integrated,” and “it’s pretty hard to see how that would work without having Canada in the deal.” Trump said Saturday on Twitter that there was “no political necessity” to keep Canada in NAFTA. But it’s questionable whether Trump can unilaterally exclude Canada from a deal to replace the three-nation NAFTA agreement, without the approval of Congress. Negotiations to keep Canada in the reimagined trade bloc are to resume this week. Trumka also said of Trump: “The things that he’s done to hurt workers outpace what he’s done to help workers,” arguing that Trump has not come through with an infrastructure program and has overturned regulations that “will hurt us on the job.” (AP)

RAIDERS EXPLAIN
NFL Late in the spring, back when wide receiver Cam Sims and cornerback Danny Johnson sat through three days of the NFL draft without their names getting called, neither man could’ve expected he’d be on a team’s roster the first week of the season. But Saturday afternoon, as some Redskins players made the lonely walk to hand in their playbooks to coaches, no one called for Sims or Johnson. By the 4 p.m. deadline, Johnson’s friends were tweeting their congratulations to him, and a person close to Sims said the wide receiver’s mother was celebrating her son’s improbable rise to the NFL. Both might have been the biggest surprises on a final roster. In an unusual move, the Redskins kept five running backs. Last month’s signing of Adrian Peterson led to heavy competition at the position. In addition to
Peterson, Washington kept Chris Thompson, Rob Kelley, Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall. Perine’s job seemed in question after recent fumbling issues. Marshall has an upper leg injury and might be placed on injured reserve. Kapri Bibbs, who had played well in the preseason, was let go Saturday, then signed to the practice squad Sunday. Third-string quarterback Kevin Hogan was let go, but there still was a locker stall for him Sunday, indicating that the team might have wanted to stash him on the practice squad. But he was claimed by the Broncos, who released former first-round pick Paxton Lynch. The Redskins kept six receivers, with Sims, Maurice Harris and Trey Quinn backing up starters Jamison Crowder, Paul Richardson Jr. and Josh Doctson. Sims had intrigued Washington’s coaches and executives all summer by making plays in training camp. At 6-foot-5 with long arms, he offers something the Redskins desperately need — a player who can leap for

Spaight a surprising cut The biggest surprise cut from the Redskins’ roster Saturday was inside linebacker Martrell Spaight. The 25-year-old was a fifth-round pick in 2015 and played in 29 games over the past two seasons, starting six times last year. high passes in the back of the end zone. Doug Williams, senior vice president of player personnel, said two weeks ago that Sims had “thrown a grenade” into the wide receiver competition.
Sims’ status seemed in doubt after he failed to make a catch in Thursday night’s preseason finale, but Brian Quick — his primary competition — had only one grab. Johnson, who played at Southern, was the biggest surprise of training camp, steadily moving up the depth chart. His development was a big reason the team was comfortable with releasing Orlando Scandrick. “Danny is awesome,” Gruden said, adding that the team had targeted Johnson since the Senior Bowl and wanted to bring him to camp. “If you are a college free agent and you make an NFL team, its quite a dang accomplishment.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Jon Gruden: We couldn’t afford Mack Coach Jon Gruden said Sunday that he believes the Raiders did the right thing by trading star pass rusher Khalil Mack, below, to the Bears because it helped them secure draft picks and cap space to rebuild. A day earlier, Oakland sent Mack to Chicago for first-round picks in 2019 and 2020, a sixth-rounder next year and a third-rounder in 2020. The Raiders also gave up a secondround pick in 2020 and a conditional fifthrounder. Chicago then gave Mack a six-year extension that became the richest deal ever for a defensive player: $141 million total with $90 million guaranteed. Oakland has $25 million a year committed to quarterback Derek Carr. “The economic part of it certainly weighs in,” Gruden said. (AP)

Toliver and Cloud find shooting touch before final game of semifinals WNBA PLAYOFFS Kristi Toliver didn’t need to be reminded about her slump through the WNBA semifinals. Through the first three games of Washington’s series with Atlanta, the Mystics’ guard who had shot 36 percent from 3-point range
during the regular season was just 4-of-21 from beyond the arc. Heading into Game 4 on Sunday in Washington, Toliver said she ignored reading about her stats in the newspaper and leaned on some old advice instead. “You’re either hot or you’re due,” Toliver said. “I knew I wasn’t hot, so I knew it was coming, and that’s what shooters do.” With the Mystics facing elimination, Toliver led all scorers

moving forward,” said Cloud, who matched her series high of 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Besides Delle Donne — who posted 15 points and 10 rebounds in Game 4 — Toliver is the only other Mystics player with WNBA Finals experience. However, Toliver is the only Mystics player to win a title, which she did in 2016 with Los Angeles. As a leader, Toliver never worried about her slump. She knew she’d step up. “I’m glad that not only myself but others were able to answer the call,” Toliver said. “Now we have to build off this momentum. One game, that’s not good enough. COLLEGE FOOTBALL The tragic death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair and the ensuing allegations of a toxic culture have been the dominant storylines for Maryland football this summer, but a game finally emerged into the forefront when the Terps faced No. 23 Texas on Saturday at FedEx Field. For the second straight year, Maryland upset a ranked Texas
team, this time 34-29. And much of Maryland’s success Saturday had to do with the interim coach Matt Canada’s willingness to gamble. Freshman receiver Jeshaun Jones threw a touchdown pass on a trick play, the last of three touchdowns he scored on his first three college touches, including a 28-yard run on the Terps’ first drive and a 65-yard catch later in the opening quarter. Canada, working as a head coach for the first time in his career, showed off an offense that is creative and run-heavy. Against Texas, Canada used

Jake Funk fumbled and was tackled in the end zone for a safety on a jet sweep to cut Maryland’s lead to 24-16 in the second quarter. With the lead down to 24-22 in the third quarter, Maryland attempted a fourth-down conversion at its own 36-yard line and was stopped. Texas then scored to take its first lead of the day. The tea on mushrooms It wasn’t too long ago that mushrooms were for pizza. Now purveyors of chaga, lion’s mane and reishi mushrooms are promoting them as drink enhancements. They are becoming popular in the form of powdered extracts — used to make mushroom teas and “coffee.” In

stress. Alleged benefits include boosting energy and easing depression. But what does research say? CHRISTY BRISSETTE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Chaga
Lion’s mane
Reishi
This mushroom grows on trees such as birch in northern climates. Also known as clinker polypore, chaga looks like a clump of dirt with some orange areas. Chaga mushrooms have long been used as a folk remedy in Northern Europe. Enthusiasts claim they can increase concentration, reduce fatigue, boost the immune system and fight cancer.
This mushroom is full and fluffy like its namesake, with a white or golden color. It’s also called yamabushitake or hou tou gu. It is used as food and medicine in China, Korea, Japan and India.
This mushroom grows on decaying trees and wood. Also known as the lingzhi mushroom, it comes in several colors, although red is the most popular. Reishi mushrooms have been used in Japan and China for centuries for high blood pressure, arthritis and fighting cancer.
Alleged benefits: Studies in isolated cells and animals suggest that chaga may help boost the immune system and destroy cancer cells. There haven’t been studies yet to show whether this effect carries over to humans. The same goes for the purported mental boost and blood sugar-reducing effects of chaga: At this time, not enough is known about its safety and effectiveness for people. Although these mushrooms may be “natural,” that doesn’t make them harmless. For example, chaga is high in oxalates, compounds that reduce nutrient absorption and could damage the kidneys in large amounts.
Alleged benefits: Lion’s mane may be beneficial for brain health, although most of the research has been done on mice. Rodent studies suggest that lion’s mane could prevent damage to neurons caused by beta-amyloid plaques, which occur in Alzheimer’s disease. A double-blind study of 30 Japanese adults with mild cognitive impairment found that taking 3 grams of powdered lion’s mane a day over four months improved mental functioning compared with a placebo. Another study involving 30 menopausal women randomized to eat either cookies with lion’s mane extract or placebo cookies found no significant changes in menopausal symptoms, sleep quality or depression. There did appear to be differences in self-reported palpitations and motivation, favoring the lion’s mane group.
Alleged benefits: Studies on its health benefits have had mixed results. A small study of 10 people found that taking a reishi mushroom supplement for 10 days increased the levels of some antioxidants in the blood, which suggests potential heart health benefits. A follow-up study of 18 people taking reishi mushroom for a month didn’t replicate these results. Research also shows mixed results for reishi’s effects on blood sugar and cholesterol levels, with one study finding that it led to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and another study finding no significant impact. There isn’t enough evidence involving reishi mushrooms and cancer to recommend them as an alternative treatment.

Scientists in Sydney compared the health benefits of walking similar distances at varying speeds. The paper was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The team identified 11 English and Scottish population-wide reports that included more than 50,000 walkers, with an average age in their late 40s. The walkers were grouped into four speeds: slow, average, brisk and fast. Researchers compiled mortality rates (from heart disease and cancer) over an average follow-up period of 9.2 years. Participants who walked at an “average” speed had a 20 percent lower risk of death than the “slow” walkers. Those who walked at a “brisk” or “fast” pace had an additional 4 percent lower mortality rate. A pace faster than 20 minutes per mile is considered average, and faster than 18 minutes per mile is brisk. AMBY BURFOOT (TWP)

I can understand her being crabby about losing her partner in Frito-buying, but does she truly understand the bigger implications of the changes you’re trying to make? Does she value your goals, and support you in wanting to improve your health and life expectancy? If she’s not on board with the big stuff, then her resentment about the little stuff will fester, because she’ll only see the negatives and
not their payoff. It’s possible she feels anxious or threatened, too — perhaps she worries that your new lifestyle accentuates her own health or weight challenges. Or maybe it makes her scared you’ll leave her or become someone else entirely — or there’s a smidge of sanctimony on your part. Whatever it is, you’ve got to have a real conversation about this, or the crabbiness will continue.
It’s OK to not be there yet. (Has your kid even unpacked the shower shoes?) Your reaction is human, and it helps give meaning to this transition. And it will pass, but these feelings don’t deserve to be stuffed or rushed in the meantime. So, feel them and let them illuminate what’s aching most. Is it that you don’t feel needed? That you miss certain aspects of their personalities, or are unsure of what the future will look like at the dinner table with only your husband (perhaps adding to the disconnect you feel with him)? View this as an opportunity to redefine your life on your own terms. Yes, this may eventually involve hobbies, new or old, but it’s important that you view them less as a way to avoid your feelings and more as something that can bring new structure to your days and a new sense of purpose — and get you thinking. Jack Ryan drags down his own story TV REVIEW With a president who routinely insults the U.S. intelligence community, it’s tempting to run straight into the arms of a newfangled Jack Ryan, that adaptively macho CIA wonk turned field operative who was dreamed up decades ago by the late espionage thrillerist Tom Clancy. Played by John Krasinski, Ryan works late each night to ferret out the encrypted international banking transactions of overseas terrorists. It’s only a matter of time before he’s in the thick of it, ambushed in Yemen while trying

to watch as the writers step in to prevent “Jack Ryan” from becoming just another action drama about a white American hero versus the bad brown people. The series spends an uncommon, yet commendable, amount of time and effort telling the backstory of the show’s villain, Mousa bin Suleiman (Ali Suliman). “Jack Ryan” also segues to the side story of a morose drone pilot, Victor Polizzi (John Magaro), who drops bombs on war zones from a high-tech situation command in Nevada. While it may not have been the creators’ intent, “Jack Ryan” gets a whole lot better — and more modern, relevant and thoughtful — when Jack Ryan isn’t in it. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Neil Armstrong’s family backs the biopic amid talk it’s anti-American FILM Ryan Gosling is not an American, but he is part of a species that visited a celestial body beyond Earth. That is one perspective the Canadian used in describing 1969’s Apollo 11 mission, and specifically Neil Armstrong, whom he

Although “First Man does not show the flag-planting, there are several shots of the U.S. flag on the moon, Daily Beast writer Marlow Stern said after attending the movie’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The criticism has prompted Armstrong’s sons to defend the film’s attention to lesser-known aspects of their father’s life before his death in 2012. “This story is human and it is universal, Rick and Mark Armstrong said in a statement released Friday. “Of course, it celebrates an America achievement. on Hawaiian Airlines Flight 23. The flight from Oakland, Calif., to Maui was delayed for 90 minutes on the tarmac after a teenager accidentally AirDropped a photo of an apparent dead child at a crime scene to at least 15 passengers. The teen was trying to send the fake photo to her mother. Later, while the plane was in flight, a can of pepper spray discharged, filling the front part of the cabin. Affected passengers were moved to the back of the plane until the air cleared.

“Never judge the freshness of fish by the googliness of their eyes.” @MATTHEWJDALBY, joking about reports that a fish shop in Kuwait was shut down after customers discovered that googly eyes had been placed over the real eyes of fish to make them appear fresher. Photos picked up by Al Bayan newspaper showed one of the fake eyes slipping off and revealing a shriveled yellow eye underneath. Twitter users were absolutely delighted with the find, which inspired many fishy puns. @rodimusprime tweeted: “Well this certainly looks fishy. I hope they go to court and are found gill-ty.”

Kendall Jenner and Ben Simmons have broken up after a brief relationship, according to E! News. The reality star and NBA player began dating in May but have since “cooled off,” E!’s source said. The couple were spotted together as recently as mid-August, when they traveled to Mexico for a vacation with Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson. TMZ reported Monday that Jenner, 22, seems to have moved on to 19-year-old model Anwar Hadid after they both were spotted at the Malibu Chili Cook-Off on Friday and at Los Angeles restaurant Nobu on Sunday.
