A jokey sign in the window of a New Haven, Conn., restaurant has earned the owner a $250 fine. Duc Nguyen of Duc’s Place thought the sign might keep people from letting dogs urinate on his flowers. It read: “Attn: dog owners. This is a pay-per-pee flower pot. (Pay inside or leave your address and we’ll kindly return the favor.) The city’s public space enforcement officer said Nguyen broke two city ordinances and issued the fine Tuesday. (AP)
A man accused of kicking a seagull that tried to eat his cheeseburger at a New Hampshire beach has been fined $124. Police investigated the report from a bystander at Hampton Beach earlier this summer. NH1 reported Nate Rancloes said he had just returned from getting a burger and fries and was sitting on the sand. He said seagulls got to the burger, and he spun around to shoo one away, but struck the bird. He said it was a simple mistake. (AP)
A man has returned a book to the public library in Lexington, Ky., a half-century after it was due, WDKY-TV reported Wednesday. “The United States in World War I: The story of General John J. Fortunately, the library caps its fines at $6.75, or the man, who signed his name as Dale H., would owe more than $2,700. (EXPRESS)

Couple donates Duchamps MUSEUMS Aaron and Barbara Levine spent 20 years purchasing art by Marcel Duchamp, a pioneering conceptual artist considered a giant of the 20th century. Attracted by Duchamp’s intellectual curiosity and sense of humor, the Levines describe their collection as joyful, intimate and personal. Soon they will add another adjective: public. The Washington couple has decided to donate their Duchamp art to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, where the works will raise the profile of the Smithsonian’s modern art museum. Timed to the 50th anniversary of Duchamp’s death, the gift includes 35 works by Duchamp, as well as 15 portraits and related photographs and works on paper by his contemporaries Tristan Tzara, Man Ray and others. The gift also includes 150 books, catalogues and other ephemera about the artist. The gift will be celebrated with an exhibition in fall 2019 and an accompanying catalogue.

Gift of 35 works by the conceptual artist will raise Hirshhorn’s profile
Aaron and Barbara Levine pose with their priceless collection of art by Marcel Duchamp, which they are donating to the Hirshhorn Museum.
After the temporary exhibit, the art will return to the Levines until after their deaths, when it will be housed at the Hirshhorn for good. The donation is a major coup because the works are “the genesis point” of many contemporary artists, Hirshhorn director Melissa Chiu said. “He is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century,” she said. “Most people think of Picasso. Duchamp sits on the other side of the spectrum. He

Married for 60 years, they talk over and contradict and tease one another, and finish one another’s thoughts. She calls him Buzz; he says she’s his censor. Their passion for art is contagious. Aaron said Duchamp’s preference for thinking over seeing captured his attention. “Art is no longer a pretty painting to hang above the couch. It’s something to think about,” he said. “Duchamp changed the meaning of art, the world of art.” “He’s addicted to Duchamp,” Barbara said. Aaron didn’t object. Aaron said he also appreciates Duchamp’s subversive style. “It’s about hilarity. He was a kidder. He made it fun. He was debunking the pretense of the museum,” he said. “You never get tired of it.” The couple appreciates that the Hirshhorn is free and on the Mall. “Millions of visitors will pass by. Some will go in, and some will get hooked,” Aaron said. “If even [some] kids get hooked, I’ve done my job.” PEGGY MCGLONE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Woman, 2 sons dead in alleged murder-suicide HERNDON, VA. The attorney had once been honored for working with victims of domestic violence, but police said Thursday it appears she shot her two young sons dead in their Herndon home, before turning the gun on herself. Noera Ayaz’s husband arrived home Wednesday evening to find the aftermath and alerted police. Officers found the 42-year-old mother dead in a bathroom upstairs from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said her brother, Yasir Ayaz. The apparent murder-suicide
involving a woman who spent years advocating on behalf of other women and immigrants and was active in the Muslim community baffled her family. Police have released no motive for the slayings. “I’ll remember her as wellloved, passionate about people and passionate about law,” Ayaz said of his sister. “She was a caring person, so it is a mystery as to how this happened.” Ayaz said he was not aware of any signs of trouble in the months leading up to the tragedy. Mike Isabella, the celebrity chef whose company once included more than a dozen restaurants, several stands at Nationals Park and a food hall at Tysons Galleria, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday in federal court. It’s a major setback to the chef and his Mike Isabella Concepts, which just a year ago could seemingly do no wrong in Washington. But a sexual harassment lawsuit, filed in March, was the first public crack in the Isabella empire, and it had an almost immediate effect on sales and led directly to the Nationals cutting ties with the chef. It also affected the media coverage of Isabella restaurants, including an outright ban on his eateries on all Eater lists and maps. Now, he said, he hopes the bankruptcy filing can help him “stop the bleeding” and avoid closing any more restaurants. (TWP)

Murder suspect dies in jail Tyler Tessier apparently killed self ahead of trial in murder of girlfriend MONTGOMERY COUNTY A 33-year-old Maryland man expected to go on trial for the murder of his pregnant girlfriend died in his jail cell Thursday morning after apparently hanging himself, according to law enforcement officials. Tyler Tessier was accused of shooting 31-year-old Laura Wallen in a remote field in Damascus a year ago. Prosecutors had compiled what appeared to be a strong case against him.
Opening statements in his case were set to begin Thursday. Tessier started the morning at Tessier the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Clarksburg when he was awakened at 4 a.m. He had left his single cell to shower and was preparing to be taken to the Circuit courthouse in Rockville, said Robert Green, director of the county’s Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. It was then that, according to initial findings, he hanged himself, Green said. Tessier had been
housed in protective custody, Green said. He had been held since his arrest last September. Last September, Tessier had stood before a bank of TV cameras, pleading for Wallen — who was then considered a missing person — to return home. A popular schoolteacher, Wallen had not been seen in more than a week. As soon as late morning Thursday, a jury had been expected to begin learning what prosecutors said Tessier was desperately trying to hide as he stood before the cameras: that he had killed Wallen and buried her in a shallow grave. Tessier’s family said they are “distraught over the news of their

Wallen’s father, Mark, said Laura Wallen was “love and light. She is absolutely missed. We were robbed of the trial. We were also robbed of having a trial for our grandson,” referring the child his daughter was carrying. “It is a tough day for our family to not have this trial happen.” “As awful as today is, I feel at peace,” Wallen’s mother, Gwen, said Thursday, calling Tessier a “diabolical human.” DAN MORSE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Florence may make a brush with East Coast Hurricane Florence rapidly and unexpectedly intensified Wednesday into the season’s first major hurricane, becoming the first Category 4 hurricane since Maria last year. Although it has since weakened to a Category 2 storm, cautionary alarm bells are ringing that Florence might have some effect on the East Coast in about a week. Whether it is a direct hit, a graze or a near miss is unknowable for an event so far in the future. The storm is still 1,900 miles from the East Coast. Additional weakening is possible through Friday before a wind shear relaxes. By Monday, however, the National Hurricane Center predicts the storm will strengthen back to a Category 3. It is too soon to say with certainty that Florence will reach the United States, but it could affect Bermuda by early next week. If it does indeed make it to U.S. shores, it would likely be between Wednesday and Friday. Although the intensity forecast for the storm is extremely uncertain, it could approach the East Coast as a major hurricane, rated Category 3 or higher. In broad strokes, an inland track would bring multiple hazards, including torrential rain and damaging winds over coastal and some inland areas, and a substantial rise in water above normally dry land in coastal zones. 8000-series cars will be incremental upgrade METRORAIL Metro’s next-generation rail cars won’t be the dramatic overhaul riders experienced when they first boarded the stainless steel 7000 series in 2015. Instead, the agency is indicating it wants to improve on the design of the 7000-series cars when it ushers in the 8000-series beginning in 2024. There would be more handles for riders to hold on to, more screens to support digital advertising and — a rider-friendly addition — charging ports for electronics. Notably absent, however, are the radical ideas Metro envisioned when it began dreaming up the 8000 series: open gangways to reduce crowding and allow free passage through rail cars, almost like an articulated bus; heated floors to make for a more comfortable ride, and onboard Wi-Fi to ensure passengers are always connected. Metro announced Tuesday that is has officially begun the procurement process for the 8000 series, issuing a request for proposals for the design and build of its next-generation rail car. The 8000s would replace the aging 2000 -and 3000-series cars, with an option to also scrap the

agency’s second-most reliable 6000-series fleet, which came into service in 2006. Metro could purchase between 256 and 800 of the new cars, depending on whether it decides to retire the 6000s as they reach the midpoint of their 40-year anticipated lifespan. “Options in the contract would allow Metro to purchase ‘up to’ 800 cars in all, giving the transit agency the flexibility to support a range of initiatives and scenarios, including expanding all trains to the maximum eightcar length, running trains more frequently during rush hours, and retiring the 6000-series fleet in lieu of a midlife overhaul program,” the agency said in a news release. Metro officials said last spring the agency would need about
1,200 cars to meet future service needs, including the expansion of the Silver Line to Dulles airport and into Loudoun County, Va. The agency’s current fleet meets that threshold, and Metro has supported six-minute headways on five of six lines with the same number of cars (compared with the current eight minutes across six lines). The agency has scrapped more than half of its 5000-series cars, it says, and the final of 748 7000-series cars are expected to arrive next year, Metro said. Metro says the new cars will be fitted with “the most advanced safety technology available.” The agency has also indicated the 8000-series cars will be more energy-efficient. FIAZ SIDDIQUI

Emergency personnel and police respond Thursday after a gunman opened fire in a building in Cincinnati.
Gunman, 3 others dead after Cincinnati attack Official: Rapid response by police prevented many more casualties CINCINNATI A gunman killed three people and wounded two others Thursday morning at a high-rise office building in the heart of Cincinnati before dying in a hail of police gunfire. The shooting at the 30-story Fifth Third Center sent people running for cover across the city’s Fountain Square amid cries of “Shooter!” Police responded within seconds, and four officers opened fire, bullets smashing through glass doors and the gunman falling to the floor, authorities said. Police identified him as Omar
Enrique Santa Perez, 29, but said they don’t know a motive. Police Chief Eliot Isaac said the killer used a 9 mm handgun and was carrying magazines with about 200 rounds of ammunition. The building is home to Fifth Third Bancorp’s headquarters, as well as businesses including ice cream and sandwich shops. Police said the gunman, a Cincinnati-area resident since 2015, wasn’t a current or past employee at the Fifth Third Center. They said he went into a sandwich shop and possibly other businesses before entering the lobby and opening fire around 9:10 a.m. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the rapid police response prevented many more casualties. He said one investigator said that it could have been “a
bloodbath beyond imagination.” Afterward, police swarmed the gunman’s apartment in North Bend, Ohio, about 15 miles west of Cincinnati. Michael Richardson told The Cincinnati Enquirer he was standing outside the entrance of the bank when he heard gunshots. “I looked behind me and saw the guy — he shot and then he shot again. After that, I started running,” Richardson said. The Hamilton County Coroner’s office identified the victims as Pruthvi Kandepi, 25; Luis Calderon, 48; and Richard Newcomer, 64. One died at the scene. Two more died at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The wounded were listed there in critical condition and fair condition. ANGIE WANG AND DAN SEWELL (AP)
Will the country that gave us espresso embrace the company that gave us grande Frappuccinos? Starbucks is about to find out as it opens its first store in Italy on Friday. It has more than 28,000 stores worldwide, but the palatial Reserve Roastery in Milan is only its third roastery. The others are in Seattle, where the company started, and Shanghai. The cavernous former post office near the city’s Duomo, or cathedral, has a heated, marble-topped coffee bar. The centerpiece is a 22-foot-high bronze cask, part of the roasting process that customers can watch. And no, there are no Frappuccinos on the menu. (AP)

N.Y., N.J. dig into Catholic clergy sexual abuse The New York attorney general’s office has issued subpoenas to every Catholic diocese in the state, embarking on a major investigation of sex crimes committed and covered up by Catholic priests. New Jersey on Thursday also announced a task force focused on investigating sexual abuse by Catholic clergy. A person familiar with the New York investigation said that the office of Attorney General Barbara Underwood, above, sent civil subpoenas to the eight Catholic dioceses. The Associated Press first reported the subpoenas. The subpoenas are part of a civil investigation by the attorney general’s Charities Bureau. Separately, the criminal division is working with district attorneys who might convene grand juries to investigate crimes committed by priests. A Pennsylvania grand jury investigation announced last month found allegations that more than 1,000 children were sexually abused by more than 300 priests over a period spanning more than 70 years. The report set off a storm, with many Catholic faithful demanding that their own dioceses open their files to criminal investigators to examine whether a similarly extensive cover-up took place. Missouri, New Mexico and Nebraska are also pursuing investigations. JULIE ZAUZMER AND MARK BERMAN

Landmark ruling paves the way for a ‘better future,’ a judge says NEW DELHI India’s Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a colonial-era law that made gay sex punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a landmark victory for gay rights that one judge said would “pave the way for a better future.” The 18 61 law, a relic of
Victorian England that hung on long after the end of British colonialism, was a weapon used to discriminate against India’s gay community, the judges ruled in a unanimous decision. “Constitutional morality cannot be martyred at the altar of social morality,” Chief Justice Dipak Misra said, reading the verdict. “Social morality cannot be used to violate the fundamental rights of even a single individual.” As the news spread, the streets

bedroom is left to us.” In its ruling, the court said sexual orientation was a “biological phenomenon” and that discrimination on that basis violated fundamental rights.
The law known as Section 377 held that intercourse between members of the same sex was against the order of nature. The five petitioners who challenged the law said it was discriminatory and led to gays living in fear of harassment and persecution. Homosexuality has gained a degree of acceptance in deeply conservative India over the past decade, particularly in big cities. India now has openly gay celebrities, and some high-profile Bollywood films have dealt with gay issues. But many gay people still face isolation and persecution, and the court’s ruling will do little to change life on the ground for millions of people. ASHOK SHARMA (AP)

Kavanaugh unscathed POLITICS Senate Democrats mounted a last, ferocious attempt Thursday to paint Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh as a foe of abortion rights and a likely defender of President Trump if he makes it to the high court. But their chances of blocking Trump’s nominee seemed to fade away by the end of a second marathon day of testimony in his confirmation hearing. Questioning of the 53-yearold appellate judge wound down without him revealing much about his judicial stances or making any serious mistakes that might jeopardize his confirmation. In what almost seemed like a celebration, Kavanaugh’s two daughters returned to the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing room for the final hours of testimony, accompanied by teammates on Catholic school basketball teams their father has coached. The hearing pivoted during the day to Roe v. Wade, the high court’s landmark abortion case. The Democrats’ best hope of stopping Kavanaugh — who could swing the court further to the right for decades — would be branding him as a justice who might vote to overturn the ruling, attracting the votes of two Republican senators who support abortion rights. A newly disclosed email suggested he once indicated the abortion case was not settled law, though Kavanaugh denied in the hearing that he had been expressing his personal views on the issue. In the 2003 email, Kavanaugh was reviewing a potential op-ed

article in support of two judicial nominees while he was working at the George W. Bush White House. The document had been held by the committee as confidential, but was made public Thursday. “I am not sure that all legal scholars refer to Roe as the settled law of the land at the Supreme Court level since Court can always overrule its precedent, and three current Justices on the Court would do so,” Kavanaugh wrote, referring to justices at the time, in an email to a Republican Senate aide. The document was partially redacted. Asked about it by the
Release of documents Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., said he was willing to risk fallout over releasing confidential documents about Kavanaugh’s views on race. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said that senators could be expelled for violating confidentiality rules. Democrats and Booker responded, “Bring it on.” However, the documents had been released earlier, in a predawn disclosure approved by Bill Burck, the records lawyer for George W. Bush. Booker’s spokeswoman said that only by raising the issue publicly was the senator able to “shame the committee into agreeing” to release the pages. (AP)

committee’s top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein of California, Kavanaugh reiterated his previous testimony that “Roe v. Wade is an important precedent of the Supreme Court.” Democrats also hammered at Kavanaugh’s ability to separate himself from Trump and special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Throughout his testimony, Kavanaugh has repeatedly insisted he fully embraces the importance of judicial independence. Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois put the focus on Trump, who Durbin said “has shown contempt for the federal judiciary and has shown disrespect for the rule of law over and over again.” “It’s in the context of the Trump presidency that we ask you these questions,” Durbin said. Kavanaugh refused to answer questions about Trump or commit to stepping aside from any case about the Russia investigation that might come to the Supreme Court. When Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut invited him to denounce Trump’s criticism of federal judges, the nominee demurred. “The way we stand up is by deciding cases and controversies independently without fear or favor,” Kavanaugh said. Earlier, he said his 12-year record as an appellate judge shows that he has not been afraid to invalidate executive branch actions. Kavanaugh said that he has made clear that a court order “that requires a president to do something or prohibits a president from doing something ... is the final word in our system.” Republicans hope to confirm Kavanaugh in time for the first day of the new Supreme Court term, Oct. 1.
JUIZ DE FORA, BRAZIL Jair Bolsonaro, a leading Brazilian presidential candidate, was stabbed during a campaign event Thursday and was undergoing surgery. Officials and his son said the far-right candidate was in stable condition, though the son also said Bolsonaro suffered severe blood loss and arrived to the hospital “almost dead.” Numerous videos on social media showed Bolsonaro, who has promised to crack down on crime in Latin America’s largest nation, being stabbed with a knife to the lower part of his stomach. At the moment of the attack, Bolsonaro was on the shoulders of a supporter in the city where he was campaigning, Juiz de Fora. Police spokesman Flavio Santiago confirmed to The Associated Press that his attacker had been arrested. Santiago said the attacker was identified as Adelio Bispo de Oliveira. He said the suspect was beaten badly by Bolsonaro supporters after the attack. Bolsonaro’s son, Flavio Bolsonaro, initially posted on Twitter that the injury was superficial. An hour later, he tweeted that the wound was “worse than we thought.” Flavio said the knife had hit his father’s liver, lung and intestines. He arrived at the hospital “almost dead,” Flavio wrote. “His condition now seems stabilized. Please pray.” MAURICIO SAVARESE

above such amateur acts.” Pompeo, who was in India, denied writing the anonymous opinion piece, saying, “It’s not mine.” He accused the media of trying to undermine the Trump administration and said he found that “incredibly disturbing.” Coats issued his own denial, followed by Defense Secretary James Mattis, Housing Secretary Ben Carson, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, budget director Mick Mulvaney and others. With several prominent administration members delivering on-therecord denials, the focus could now fall on other senior aides to do the same, with questions raised about those who stay silent. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tried to head off reporters’ inquiries of Trump officials, tweeting that the questions should be aimed at The New York Times, which she said was “complicit in this deceitful act.” ZEKE MILLER, CATHERINE
IMMIGRATION The Trump administration on Thursday moved to abandon a long-standing court settlement that limits how long immigrant children can be kept locked up, proposing new regulations that would allow the government to detain families until their immigration cases are decided. Homeland Security officials said that ending the so-called Flores agreement of 1997 will speed up the handling of asylum requests while also deterring people from illegally crossing the Mexican border. The move angered immigrant rights advocates and is all but certain to trigger a court battle. “It is sickening to see the United States government looking for ways to jail more children for longer,” said Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project. The Flores agreement requires the government to keep children in the least restrictive setting possible and to release them generally after 20 days. For decades, many parents and children caught trying to slip into the country have been released into the U.S. while their asylum requests wind through the courts. Such cases can drag on for years, and some immigrants stop showing up to court when it becomes clear their asylum requests are going to be denied. The new rules would allow the government to hold families until their cases are completed.

POLITICS Pushing back against explosive reports that his own administration is conspiring against him, President Trump lashed out against the anonymous senior official who wrote a New York Times opinion piece claiming to be part of a “resistance” working “from within” to thwart his most dangerous impulses. Perhaps as striking as the essay was the recognition of the long list of administration officials who plausibly could have been its author. Many have privately shared some of the same concerns expressed about the president with colleagues, friends and reporters. Washington was consumed by a wild guessing game as to the identity of the writer, and swift denials of involvement in the op-ed came Thursday from top administration officials, including from Vice President Mike Pence’s office, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and other Cabinet members. Trump was furious, tweeting Thursday morning that “The Deep State and the Left, and their vehicle, the Fake News Media, are going Crazy — & they don’t know what to do.” The op-ed brought to light questions that have been whispered in Washington for more than a year: Is Trump truly in charge? And could a divided executive branch pose a danger to the country? Former CIA Director John Brennan, a fierce Trump critic, called the op-ed “active insubordination … born out of loyalty to the country.” Trump raged about the piece

The text of the op-ed was pulled apart for clues: The writer is identified as an “administration official”; does that mean a person who works outside the White House? The references to Russia and the late Sen. John McCain — do they suggest someone working in national security? The Beltway guessing game seeped into the White House, as current and former staffers alike traded calls and texts trying to figure out who could have written the piece, some turning to reporters and asking them for clues. Hotly debated on Twitter was the author’s use of the word “lodestar,” which pops

MYSTICS AT STORM | 9 P.M. FRIDAY, ESPNEWS
Ready for the Storm
Mystics remain confident as they take on the top seed in the franchise’s first Finals WNBA FINALS Elena Delle Donne sat on a chair in the Mystics’ locker room Tuesday night, her left knee wrapped in ice to limit swelling from a bone bruise. She wasn’t about to be only a spectator in the most important game in franchise history, so Delle Donne had slipped on a protective brace and proceeded to play more than 36 minutes in a winner-takeall Game 5 against the Atlanta Dream to send the Mystics to the WNBA Finals for the first time. That she pushed through the discomfort to collect 14 points and 11 rebounds left her teammates marveling at her moxie, but Delle Donne counted the performance as simply part of her promise from the day she arrived to do whatever necessary to deliver the Mystics a championship. Washington now stands within reach of its first professional basketball title since the Bullets won the NBA Finals in 1978 in the same city where the No. 3 seed Mystics will play Friday
night — Seattle. “I’m just so proud of this group,” Delle Donne said. “All season long, it’s been team, team, team. It’s about we, and that’s what got it done, and that’s what’s going to continue to get it done.” Delle Donne, the Mystics’ record holder for single-season scoring average, is making her second trip to the WNBA Finals after losing in 2014 when she played for the Chicago Sky. The only player on the Mystics with a WNBA championship ring is guard Kristi Toliver. The two-time All-Star won hers with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2016, beating Minnesota in five games. “Don’t make the moment bigger than what it is,” Toliver said of how the Mystics should approach their first Finals. “Enjoy each moment but be confident in yourself and be confident in who we are as a team.” The Mystics lost twice in three regular-season games this year against top-seeded Seattle, falling both times on the road. But
Series storylines Injured stars: Elena Delle Donne sustained a bone bruise in her left knee in Game 2 that forced her to miss one game. Sue Bird broke her nose in Game 4 and sat out the second half. Yet with the season on the line, both stepped up in Game 5s. A first-time champ: Either Mystics coach Mike Thibault or Storm coach Dan Hughes will win his first WNBA title. Thibault, the league’s all-time leader in coaching victories, lost in the finals with Connecticut in 2004 and 2005. Hughes lost in the finals in 2008 when he was coaching in San Antonio. Home away from home: The Mystics will play their home games at George Mason because Washington’s normal home — Capital One Arena — is being renovated. The Mystics played their semifinal home games at George Washington’s arena, but that also has a conflict. The Mystics will host the Storm for Game 3 on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and, if necessary, for Game 4 on Friday at 8 p.m. (AP)

coach Mike Thibault cautioned not to draw too many conclusions based on those circumstances. In the first matchup May 29, Washington was without Delle Donne and fellow starters LaToya Sanders and Natasha Cloud. The teams played again July 8, with the Mystics on the second leg of a back-to-back. “I don’t know that either team has a really good read on the other team,” Thibault said, “other than we play really similar.” He pointed to several matchups in particular, beginning with Delle Donne facing Storm forward Breanna Stewart, this year’s league MVP. Then there’s Toliver going against veteran point guard Sue Bird, who scored 14 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter in Seattle’s 94-84 win over the Phoenix Mercury in its decisive Game 5 Tuesday night. “The Finals bring out the best in people,” Toliver said. “I’m excited to face Sue, Stewie and Jewell [Loyd], friends and great competitors.” GENE WANG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Jake Bentley directs a new, fast-paced offense for South Carolina.
S. Carolina aiming to upset Georgia COLLEGE FOOTBALL South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley is excited about his team’s new, fast-paced offense. He believes the 24th-ranked Gamecocks can move the ball well at home Saturday against No. 3 Georgia (3:30, CBS) in a game that will give the winner the inside track in the SEC East. Bentley passed for a careerhigh four touchdowns in a 49-16 win over Coastal Carolina, and the Gamecocks scored their most points in a game in five years. But the QB knows that Coastal Carolina is not Georgia. “We’ve got to execute even better and continue to build on what we did last week,” he said. On Tuesday, the Gamecocks broke into the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2014. It’s a milestone coach Will Muschamp will spend almost no time discussing. “If I do discuss it, it will be a solid 15 seconds of a waste of our time,” Muschamp said. More important to Muschamp is beating Georgia, something he hasn’t done much. Muschamp is 1-5 as a head coach against the Bulldogs, with the last two of those losses coming at South Carolina. The last two losses were close — 28-14 in 2016 and 24-14 last year — but South Carolina struggled to contain Georgia’s run game. Gamecocks linebacker Bryson

Allen-Williams said South Carolina has upgraded its personnel and worked to improve its techniques. He knows, too, that toppling Georgia could get those skeptical about the Gamecocks to take another look. “They competed for the national championship last year,” Allen-Williams said. “They’ve got talented players, just like we have talented players. The biggest thing is just us taking all games the same and not doing what some guys like to do in getting up for certain games.” PETE IACOBELLI (AP)

SEASON OUTLOOK
Trent Williams Alex Smith Adrian Peterson Vernon Davis
SEASON PREVIEW
Roster far from perfect
The Redskins’ roster this year is mostly devoid of star power. The highest-profile players on the team may be a cornerback, Josh
Norman, and a tackle, Trent Williams. In coach Jay Gruden’s fifth year with Washington, the offense has a remade receiving corps and a cobbled-together stable of running backs. The defense is betting heavily on a youth movement. Here’s a look at which position groups could provide a strong foundation for a winning squad, and which should give fans cause for concern. (THE WASHINGTON POST/EXPRESSS)
Cornerstones
Question marks
Offensive line
Quarterback
Defensive line
Wide receiver
This is likely the best unit on the roster. Left tackle Trent Williams is a six-time Pro Bowl pick. Right tackle Morgan Moses was the only starting lineman to play every game in 2017. Right guard Brandon Scherff has two Pro Bowls in his first three years. Chase Roullier took over as the starting center last year. Left guard Shawn Lauvao tested free agency but is back on a one-year deal.
Since arriving from Kansas City this offseason, Alex Smith has been as advertised — a strong leader, accurate and smart. He set career highs last season with 4,042 yards and 26 touchdowns. The question is whether he can throw the deep ball. Backup Colt McCoy is a Jay Gruden favorite who has mastered Washington’s system in his first four years with the team.
This should be the most improved area on the roster after Daron Payne was drafted No. 13 overall and with 2017 first-round pick Jonathan Allen back from injury. But the team is asking a lot of two young, mostly unproven players. Still, there are high expectations for them along with fellow starter Matt Ioannidis. Nose tackle Tim Settle could be a steal as a fifth-round pick.
Paul Richardson Jr. was signed to a five-year, $40 million deal as a free agent in March with the hope that he’ll be a home run threat opposite Josh Doctson. He’s already dealt with a heel injury in camp, but Doctson is expected to finally break out after being a first-round pick in 2016. Slot receiver Jamison Crowder may be the biggest beneficiary of Smith’s presence.
Linebacker
Tight end
Cornerback
Running back
Every starter returns for 2018 — Ryan Kerrigan, Zach Brown, Mason Foster and Preston Smith. Kerrigan is coming off a 13-sack season as an edge rusher, and Brown re-signed after he led the team with 127 tackles. Foster is the QB of the defense, and Smith is a gifted athlete who has yet to fully play up to that potential outside. The team hopes to get more out of secondyear pro Ryan Anderson.
Jordan Reed remains a unique offensive weapon and one of the best tight ends in the league when healthy. The problem is the 6-2, 245-pounder is coming off a pair of toe surgeries and has played more than 12 games just once in his first five years. But Vernon Davis, 34, still has speed and is a legitimate weapon for a backup tight end. He and Smith have a connection from their days as 49ers teammates.
Bashaud Breeland, a four-year starter, and nickel back Kendall Fuller are gone. Fourth-year pro Quinton Dunbar is now the starter opposite Josh Norman. Fabian Moreau, the 2017 third-round pick, takes over at nickel. The backups are three rookies: undrafted free agent Danny Johnson, seventhround pick Greg Stroman and supplemental draft pick Adonis Alexander.
The excitement for Derrius Guice was high, but the second-round pick tore his ACL in the first preseason game. That opened the door for future Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson, 33, to make the team. It’s unclear how much juice he has left. Chris Thompson returns from a broken leg as one of the NFL’s best third-down backs. Rob Kelley is back for a third year, along with second-year pro Samaje Perine.

Quarterback Dak Prescott will lean on RB Ezekiel Elliott even more with Dez Bryant and Jason Witten off the roster this year.
NFL For the past six years, the Redskins went through a gamut of tumult and drama — much of it self-inflicted — while attempting to develop two quarterbacks from one draft class. First there was Robert Griffin III, an instant success who was incinerated by the flames of his own rising star and ultimately undone by injuries that were exacerbated by Washington’s institutional dysfunction. Then there was Kirk Cousins, the unlikely successor whose
willingness to bet on himself grew into a lucrative exit strategy. By acquiring Alex Smith from Kansas City this offseason, the Redskins have introduced a leader into their locker room who, compared to his predecessors, must seem like a steady, stoic stepdad ready to put an end to the family’s feuding ways. Cast out by Kansas City after completing the finest season of his 13-year career, Smith offers Washington something the city hasn’t truly had since
U.S. Soccer Federation announces plan to hire next men’s coach by the end of the year
the Redskins last hoisted the Lombardi Trophy on Jan. 26, 1992: A fully formed franchise quarterback who’s committed for the long haul. While Cousins’ critics say he wasn’t being authentic when he insisted he wanted to stay in Washington, Smith told reporters at his introductory news conference in March, “This is where I wanted to be.” In their own ways, Griffin and Cousins were big talkers. Griffin, who’s now a backup
quarterback in Baltimore, talked up his catchphrases and brand — and he had a habit of blaming his teammates’ shortcomings. Cousins, who’s now tasked with guiding a Super Bowl contender in Minnesota, talked about seeing the world in 15-minute increments, hunkering down in a film-watching nook and how, gee, he’d really love to stick around if the Redskins would just break the bank instead of asking him to play under the franchise tag for two straight seasons.
NHL official tells AP marijuana legalization in Canada won’t affect league’s drug policy
Since Smith’s arrival in a deal that sent promising cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick to the Chiefs, Washington’s new quarterback has won the respect of the locker room with what he’s left unsaid. “He just came in, and he was quiet,” running back Chris Thompson said. “He just let everything work itself out. He got a feel for everybody, and then that’s when he started talking more to guys. I think everybody respected that about him. He didn’t come in and was like, ‘This is my team, y’all need to get behind me,’ and blah blah blah. It wasn’t like that. It was like he was coming to a new team, getting to know everybody, and people just respected that about him.” Money talks, too, of course, and the Redskins’ willingness to pay Smith left critics questioning the club’s decision to splurge on a quarterback who is four years older than Cousins but whose strengths and weaknesses are fairly identical. Smith, 34, received a four-year, $94 million extension from the Redskins. Cousins, 30, got a fully guaranteed three-year deal worth $84 million from the Vikings. What Smith’s new teammates observed from the earliest offseason workouts was a veteran whose meticulous training habits helped him navigate 13 years in the NFL. The fact that Smith, who was selected No. 1 overall by the 49ers in the 2005 draft, is still in the league is remarkable considering that he didn’t quarterback San Francisco to a winning record in any of his first six years, which included a full season lost to a shoulder injury. Once Jim Harbaugh became coach in San Francisco, Smith led the 49ers to a 13-3 record and their first playoff win in nine years. A concussion Smith suffered the following season opened the door for Colin Kaepernick to elbow Smith out of the job, and Smith was traded to the Chiefs in 2013 for two second-round picks. Alex Smith, 34, has impressed coach Jay Gruden, top, and his teammates with a work ethic and quiet confidence developed over 13 years as a pro.
City, Smith was one of 12 NFL quarterbacks to start at least 76 games. He threw the fewest interceptions (33) of anyone on that list. He also threw the second-fewest touchdown passes (102) — only Joe Flacco tossed fewer. As the Chiefs’ starter, Smith won 50 regular-season games, made three Pro Bowls and led Kansas City to the postseason four times. Last season,
“A lot of it isn’t even him trying. It’s just him being himself. We respected him as soon as he stepped in.” SAFETY D.J. SWEARINGER, talking about how quarterback Alex Smith won over the Redskins’ locker room
Rams, Chargers will soon start season ticket sales for Inglewood stadium set to open in 2020
he led the NFL in passer rating with a mark of 104.7. But his 1-4 playoff record with the Chiefs left the team unsatisfied, and for the second time in his career, he was traded away. No one would be able to survive so many years in the pressure cooker that is life in the league without developing a thick skin. “I don’t feel like I have to prove myself to anybody any longer,” Smith told The Washington Post this summer. So when it came time for Smith to make a first impression on the Redskins’ locker room, he didn’t need to campaign for himself. All he needed to do was go about his business as usual. Safety D.J. Swearinger noticed how Smith’s command of the huddle settled the offense, how Smith was looking off safeties and making smart decisions with the ball in practice. “A lot of it isn’t even him trying, it’s just him being himself,” Swearinger said. “We respected him as soon as he stepped in.” Linebacker Mason Foster noticed how Smith pushed himself in everything he did. “From Day 1,” Foster said, “he came in in OTAs running and competing in every drill, in there lifting all the time, working hard, just a straight winner. It’s the same thing you see on film.” The longer Smith spent around the guys, and the more his onfield communication revealed his intellect, the more Smith began to let his leadership style show. And although Smith had limited snaps in an underwhelming preseason, his presence gives teammates confidence that the Redskins will be competitive this season. “When practice is going bad — even when it’s going good — he’ll say something, you know just a quick two or three words. It’s not much, but you just kind of feel it,” Thompson said. “That’s something that comes from a guy that’s been in the league for a very long time. You know there’s a reason that they’re still in the league.” GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Army father shaped Allen into a ‘fighter’ NFL Richard Allen did not raise his two sons to fail. He is an Army man, a retired sergeant first class, who sees no effort worth anything unless it is complete. Thirteen years ago, when his youngest son wanted to play football, the father asked if he was playing for fun or if he sought to be the best. “I want to be the best player I can be,” Jonathan Allen told him. Richard took a clipboard to his son’s practice near their Chesapeake, Va., home, watching and taking notes. After practice, as the other players headed home, he made his son run sprints until he stood exhausted. He was 10 years old. “I told my son, he has to honor his commitment. He can’t quit,” Richard Allen says now. Want to know what drives the defensive end who is among the most essential elements to the success of the Redskins’ defense?
REDSKINS AT CARDINALS 4:25 P.M. SUNDAY, FOX
Players to watch on the Cardinals With new coach Steve Wilks leading the Cardinals and new quarterback Sam Bradford looking to find Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona presents a lot of unknowns for the Redskins in their road opener. Here are three players to watch. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)
Want to understand the fire that burns in the 2017 first-round pick, the key to a line that was Washington’s burden last season? Look back to the lessons delivered by an old Army sergeant on a kid’s football field in Chesapeake. The desire born there lives on at Redskins Park. Late last month, Jonathan Allen and the rest of Washington’s first-team defense looked flat in a 29-17 preseason loss to Denver. Allen was furious. “We looked terrible out there,” he said that night. He was still steaming two days later when the Redskins held their first practice since the defeat. The players wore pads, and on each play Allen thundered through the offensive line, treating a lowcontact workout as if it were a regular-season game. “You always want to play good football: preseason games, practice, whatever it is,” Allen said.
JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Strict upbringing taught the defensive end to set a high standard in everything he does
Jonathan Allen hopes to help turn around last year’s worst run defense.
“You never want to go out there and play how we played. You want to grow from that and move on.” When Redskins players are asked what it is that impresses them the most about Allen, they say it is his accountability. When Allen is asked where that comes from, he goes back to all those post-practice sprints. “Oh, that’s my dad,” Allen says. “Twenty-three years in the military.”
Richard Allen studied ways to mitigate contamination from nuclear and chemical weapons. It was serious work. But the Army had made Richard a serious man. When he gained custody of his two sons around the time Jonathan was 9, he was determined to raise them with military standards of discipline and respect. In Richard Allen’s house there was no football without straight A’s in school. Richard also had
Jonathan do 100 pushups every day. If Jonathan’s technique grew sloppy or he rushed, Richard made him do the pushups again. “Over the course of time you will be bigger, stronger and faster,” Richard said. Maybe this sounds extreme, but a funny thing happened. The other players on the youth team saw Jonathan had become better than them, and they started running, too. That’s when Richard Allen added another rule for his son: Make sure you finish first. “He was supposed to give 100 percent all the time,” Richard Allen says. “I set a high standard for everything my sons did.” What do an Army father’s edicts more than a decade old have to do with these Redskins? Richard Allen’s high measure for everything hasn’t left his son. Last year, the Redskins gave up an NFL-high 2,146 rushing yards — more than 134 yards per game. Allen played just five games before going on injured reserve in October with a Lisfranc injury, but he felt the sting that comes with being the worst. “He’s a fighter,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said of Allen, “a really great competitor.” Allen might not have been a big part of finishing last against the run, but he owned it like he had been on the field for every play. That’s because, all these years later, the Army has been driven into Allen. Set a standard, set it high, and never let it go. LES CARPENTER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The former first-round pick of the 49ers has made the Pro Bowl four times but has only done so once in the past three years with Arizona. A triceps injury forced him to miss all but one game last year, but if he returns to form, he could give Redskins nose tackle Daron Payne a battle.
Under Wilks, who was Carolina’s defensive coordinator last year, the Cardinals switched from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3. That means Jones, who led the league with 17 sacks last year, moves from outside linebacker to defensive end. He’ll be a tough assignment for tackle Morgan Moses.
After a ridiculous 2016, he was poised to become the top back in the NFL. Two years ago, Johnson ran for 1,239 yards, caught 80 passes for 879 yards and scored 20 total touchdowns. A broken wrist in Week 1 last year interrupted his rise, but he’s looked explosive in the preseason.

Burt Reynolds broke out as a Hollywood leading man with 1977’s “Smokey and the Bandit.”
ALSO OPENING
‘The Apparition’
UNIVERSAL PICTURES
Unrated, 144 min.
Hollywood’s wild child Burt Reynolds died Thursday at 82 after an up-and-down career of movie stardom 1936-2018 Burt Reynolds, whose blend of Southern-fried machismo and wise-guy playfulness launched his worldwide celebrity in the 1970s, first as a freewheeling chat-show guest, then as a nude centerfold in Cosmopolitan magazine and finally as a Hollywood action star, died Thursday. He was 82. His death was confirmed in a family statement provided by his manager. Additional details were not immediately available. Tire-screeching fare such as “Smokey and the Bandit” (1977) and “The Cannonball Run” (1981) largely bookended Reynolds’ reign as a top box office draw and
cemented his on-screen persona as a carefree man’s man with an arm around a lady and his foot on the gas pedal. Off screen, the mustachioed actor developed a reputation as a hard-drinking playboy whose charm alternated with a volcanic, hair-trigger temper. He made atrocious career decisions, propelled in part by a drug addiction and dramatic financial reversals. Critical plaudits and peer recognition appeared wildly beyond his grasp when, in the twilight of his professional life, he summoned a precisely calibrated performance in “Boogie Nights” (1997) as a 1970s movie pornographer with delusions of artistry.
Netflix picks up “Designated Survivor” for Season 3 after ABC ax
In a career spanning five decades and more than 100 movie and television roles, Reynolds said he mostly chose projects that seemed “fun” at the time. As his career waxed and waned, so did his often turbulent personal life. His first marriage, to British actress Judy Carne, ended in divorce in the mid-1960s. Reynolds also was involved with actress Inger Stevens when she committed suicide in 1970, and dated his “Smokey” co-star Sally Field. Reynolds became a tabloid staple during his divorce from actress Loni Anderson, whom he married in 1988. As their marriage disintegrated in the early 1990s, they traded accusations

of flagrant infidelity and waged a bitter custody battle over their adopted son; the exes eventually shared custody. They wrote dueling tell-all memoirs and were widely seen as a textbook case of how not to divorce in Hollywood. Reynolds acknowledged that his personal troubles ultimately derailed his career. But as a working actor whose finances remained unsteady — he declared bankruptcy at least once — he made efforts to revive the sly charm that once enticed millions of ticket-buyers. “I go to the studios,” he told The New York Times in 1996, “and we start off and they’re very nice and they tell me they grew up with me and then somewhere in the middle of the meeting they say, ‘We have to address this — are you difficult?’ And I say, ‘If I met you between 1972 and 1976, I’m sorry.’ “At that moment, I hope for a laugh, but usually don’t get one, and then I think, what am I saying? I made a lot of money and had a lot of fun and made a lot of movies you probably loved, but, ‘I’m sorry’? I had a good time.” ADAM BERNSTEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
A sort of spiritual thriller, “The Apparition” follows a French war correspondent (Vincent Lindon) as he looks into the case of a teenage girl (Galatea Bellugi) who claims to have been visited by the Virgin Mary. This is not a film about “alternative facts.” It is, at the same time, richly enigmatic, even when the facts of the girl’s case appear to have been laid bare, in the manner of a more conventional mystery. ‘Peppermint’ R, 102 min.
Jennifer Garner plays a mother who goes rogue after her family is gunned down, disappearing for a few years, then returning to execute all who wronged her. It’s a movie best seen with a big, rowdy crowd that will be there to laugh at all the bravado. And “Peppermint” is not some model of equality — just violent escapism that happens to have a woman in the lead role. LINDSEY BAHR (AP)

FREESTYLE RELEASING
“Are you there, God? It’s me, Amber, played by Lindsay Pulsipher in a new movie out Friday.”
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
A narrow ‘Road’: In the real world, faith isn’t so easy The question isn’t if “God Bless the Broken Road” is good (it is not). The question is, who is this movie FOR? The film follows Amber (Lindsay Pulsipher), a devout churchgoer whose husband is killed in Afghanistan. We rejoin Amber and her young daughter (Makenzie Moss) two years later; Amber no longer goes to church and is angry at God for either not existing or letting her husband die (it’s unclear). There’s also a race car driver (Andrew W. Walker) in the story, for no other reason than to learn the lesson that Lightning McQueen got in “Cars.”
“Broken Road” is a Christian movie, that fairly modern genre with themes explicitly tied to contemporary American Christianity. Considering that the great commission of Christianity is to “go and make disciples of all nations,” it would be reasonable to assume that Christian movies are out to reach and convert nonbelievers. That doesn’t seem to be the goal of “Broken Road” — and even if it were, it wouldn’t work. Many people, like Amber, suffer a loss of faith after a tragedy. But that’s not the reason most non-Christians are non-Christians. Amber finds her way back (sorry, spoiler) through the prayers of friends and a lot of platitudes about
God that are better suited to bumper stickers than articles of faith. Many nonbelievers — and most of the people leaving mainstream American Christianity in droves — have complicated reasons and complex questions that have no easy answers. “Broken Road” doesn’t acknowledge that experience in the least. Modern Christian films too often encourage complacency — and nowhere in the Bible does Jesus say anything like, “Sit back, relax, you’re doing everything right.” Christianity is a wrestling match of a faith, full of teachings like “Sell all your stuff and give the money to the poor” and “If someone punches you in the

face, let them do it again” and “Yes, I know there are very clear rules, but sometimes those rules don’t count, so you actually don’t get to stone this woman caught in adultery and by the way where is the guy caught in adultery with her?” (OK, I added that last part, but you have to admit Jesus was totally thinking that.) Jesus challenged the rules and encouraged the questions, which is exactly the opposite of what “Broken Road” does. Christian art used to encompass the Sistine Chapel and Mozart’s “Requiem” and “Amazing Grace” and C.S. Lewis — works that engaged and wrestled with not only Christian beliefs and traditions, but the world at large. “Broken Road” isn’t part of that legacy: It reduces doubters and nonbelievers to straw men and reduces Christianity to easy-to-digest pablum. The real problem with “Broken Road” isn’t that it’s bad; it’s that it goes nowhere.
IN A NUTSHELL: A young, widowed mother questions God’s plan for her life. Everyone else sets her straight.

Academy CEO finally checks Twitter
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Thursday it is suspending plans to award a new Oscar for popular films at the 2019 ceremony amid widespread backlash against the idea. “There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement. ‘The Nun’ goes back to the age of classic horror FILM REVIEW As frightening as the “The Nun” is, it doesn’t hold a candle to today’s real-life horrors in the Catholic Church. But while a new generation of filmmakers has breathed life into horror by embedding it with frightful and salient social commentary, the “Conjuring” franchise — of which “The Nun” is a spinoff — isn’t about anything so real. It’s about exhuming classic horror archetypes with (mostly) oldschool effects. Set in 1952, “The Nun” is the origin story of Valak (Bonnie Aarons), a demonic nun who first turned up in “Conjuring 2.” This time, our protagonist is Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), a novitiate who is dispatched by the Vatican, along with Father Burke (Demian Bichir), to a remote Romanian abbey where a young nun has just hanged herself. Entering the gothic world of “The Nun” is to slide into a darkly fantastical realm that’s so familiar it’s practically cozy. But what distinguishes “The Nun” is its silky, sumptuous shadows. Directed by British filmmaker Corin Hardy, “The Nun” shrouds itself so much in darkness that it at times verges on becoming a nightmarish abstraction. The spell, of course, gets broken as the demands of plot and franchise return. But for a moment or two, the film hangs suspended in a luxurious gloom, the kind that these days passes for a welcome escape. JACK COYLE (AP)

It’s OK to be nosy.
@RADIODREW, reacting to a recently
released video that shows a lion at a Crimean safari park casually climbing into a car full of tourists. The 2-yearold Filya nuzzles the car’s driver, park owner Oleg Zubkov, before wiggling across the seats, jumping into tourists’ laps, cuddling with them and licking others. Weeks earlier, a lion had apparently attacked a woman at the same park.

Millman asked for a break due to the humidity, because his clothes were so soaked he couldn’t remove a tennis ball from his pocket. Djokovic lounged shirtless while Millman changed — in contrast to the experience of Alize Cornet, who initially got a violation for adjusting her shirt last week.

DIFFICULT
Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
