Flooding Is ‘Going to Get Worse’ Lee’s rainy remnants force almost 100K to evacuate in 3 states

CZ$ Jemdi ;lWYkWj[

The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee poured water on top of the already saturated Northeast on Thursday, closing off inland cities and interstates as about 100,000 people in three states were ordered to flee the Susquehanna River’s worst flooding in nearly 40 years. Most of the evacuations were ordered in and around WilkesBarre, where the levee system is just high enough to hold back the river if it crests at the predicted level. Even if the levees hold, 800 to 900 unprotected homes were in danger. If they fail, thousands of buildings could be lost. In Hummelstown, a Pennsylvania community along the river, Donna MacLeod had to be rescued from her home. “I’m heartsick,” she said. “I know I lost two cars and everything that was in my basement and everything that was on the first floor. But I have my life and

Buses and then boats were used to evacuate residents, and National Guard helicopters were on standby. Road closures effectively sealed Binghamton off to outside traffic as

emergency responders scrambled to evacuate holdouts who didn’t heed warnings to leave. “It’s going to get worse,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, warning people to leave when they get the order. Up to nine inches of rain fell in parts of Pennsylvania, and a similar amount fell in Binghamton. Rivers and streams passed or approached flood stage from Maryland to Mas-

Two eastern Maryland towns have ordered evacuations as the Susquehanna River continues to rise. The city of Havre de Grace on Thursday evening said it’s ordering hundreds of residents from low-lying areas to leave. Harford County, where Harve de Grace is located, has declared a state of emergency. Just down the road in Port Deposit, all of the nearly 1,000 residents have been told to leave. Water levels are forecast to reach near-record levels by Saturday. (AP)

At least nine deaths have been blamed on Lee, and forecasters warned that the dispiriting summer soaking wasn’t over and flooding would last four days or more. Though the storm was a remnant of Lee, Mark Wysocki of the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University also blamed Hurricane Katia, far out in the Atlantic, for the lingering downpour. Obama Mulls Troop Plan Kuwait may be used to stage U.S. forces training for Iraq MWi^_d]jed The Obama administration is considering staging American troops in Kuwait next year as a backup or rotational training force for Iraq, after the Pentagon completes the scheduled withdrawal of its current 45,000-strong force from Iraq in December, U.S. officials said. The proposal, not yet publicly announced, is among a number of options the administration is considering for extending its military training role in still-violent Iraq, whose divided government has been reluctant to directly ask Washington to keep troops on its

soil beyond this year. All troops are to depart Iraq by Dec. 31 under a 2008 security agreement, but senior U.S. officials are concerned that without more training, the Iraqi forces may squander hard-won security gains. The Iraqi army is only now taking delivery of U.S. battle tanks, on which they have yet to be trained. Iraq’s secur it y forces a re improving but still lack the capability to fully defend Iraqi air space, borders and territorial waters, U.S. military officers say.

The Obama administration favors a proposal that would leave 3,000 to 5,000 U.S. troops in Iraq next year to train Iraqi forces, U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity said this week. Kuwait has played a major role in the Iraq war from its beginning. The bulk of U.S. ground forces launched the invasion from Kuwaiti territory in March 2003, and the tiny Gulf state has served as a transit point for coalition supply convoys and air transport throughout the conflict. A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed two lawsuits Thursday that had claimed President Obama’s health care overhaul was unconstitutional, though it remains likely the U.S. Supreme Court will eventually decide whether the government can force individuals to buy insurance. The court cited technicalities in both decisions and did not rule on the constitutional issues raised by the lawsuits, ruling 3-0 that Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli did not have legal standing

to file his lawsuit. Two of the judges on the Virginia panel were appointed by Obama, the other by then-president Bill Clinton. The Richmond-based appeals court is the third appellate court to rule in lawsuits challenging the health care reform law, which requires individuals to buy health insurance or pay a penalty. A federal appeals court in Cincinnati upheld the law, while an appeals court in Atlanta struck down the insurance mandate. More than 30 lawsuits have been filed across the country. (AP)

Hunt for Gadhafi Grows in Libya New leaders accept Western assistance to find ex-strongman

Determined to hunt down Moammar Gadhafi, Libya’s new rulers say they have dedicated a special unit of fighters to track the elusive former leader, listening in on his aides’ phone calls, poring over satellite images and interviewing witnesses. Although leads come mostly from on-the-ground tips, help is also coming from France and other Western countries, according to a French official. Satellite-based transmission intercepts of phone calls try to pinpoint where Gadhafi might be. Small CIA teams are also assisting in the manhunt, according to former U.S. officials. Gadhafi, who hasn’t been seen in public for months, went underground after anti-regime fighters swept into Tripoli on Aug. 21. Capturing the ousted ruler would allow the former rebels to seal their grip on the country and shut the door on

the possibility of Gadhafi’s inspiring an insurgency. After more than four decades under his authoritarian rule, Libyans are haunted by the question of Gadhafi’s whereabouts, and the country has been awash with rumors that have put him everywhere from deep in a bunker under Tripoli to safe in exile in neighboring Niger or Algeria. On Thursday, Gadhafi dismissed talk of his flight,

saying in an audio broadcast that he’s still in Libya, and exhorting followers to keep fighting. Officials say the most reliable reports, culled from eyewitnesses and informants, put the fugitive leader in or near one of three remaining loyalist strongholds: his hometown of Sirte on the Mediterranean coast, the city of Bani Walid southeast of Tripoli, or the city of Sabha in the southern desert.

On Thursday, regime loyalists fired at least 10 rockets from inside Bani Walid at former rebel forces amassed outside the town. On Thursday, Mahmoud Jibril, Libya’s new prime minister, called the talks an opportunity to avoid further bloodshed, but said that his forces would respond if attacked. (AP)

Anis Sharif, a spokesman for the Tripoli military council, said the former rebels have a unit of more than 200 “special forces” leading the manhunt in collaboration with the operations room in the capital. He claimed they have located Gadhafi and that his capture is “just a matter of time.” But both NATO and Libyan officials have said the alliance is not helping track down Gadhafi, and NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen insisted Wednesday that the former leader “is not a target of NATO’s operation.” (AP)

A fan grieves Thursday for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, the Russian hockey team that lost all but one player in a plane crash Wednesday.

Russians Mourn Hockey Team Medvedev demands sweeping changes in ')& wake of plane crash The number of air carriers in Russia, a Russian official said. Ten companies handle 85 percent of passengers. (AP)

OWheibWlb" Hkii_W President Dmitry Medvedev called for immediate changes in Russia’s troubled aviation industry Thursday as the country mourned a crash that killed 43 people and devastated a top ice hockey team. “The number of air companies should be radically reduced,” Medvedev said.

Hop on.

Your commute starts here.

The crash Wednesday killed 36 players, coaches and staff of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team, including former NHL players, drawing attention to the poor air safety records of Russia and other former Soviet republics. The plane crashed on the opening day of an international forum

that was to showcase Yaroslavl as a modern and vibrant city. Officials could not immediately say why the Yak-42 jet struck the banks of the Volga River after takeoff from Yaroslavl, 150 miles northeast of Moscow. The two survivors, player Alexander Galimov and a crew member, were reported in grave condition Thursday. “The loss of the team is the loss of the symbol of the city,” said Mikhail Sergeichev, 22. “We had a history, we had a legend, and we hope to God that of that legend, one person will survive.” (AP)

The Mobility Lab (1501 Wilson Blvd. Arlington; Mobilitylab.org), a new local transportation think tank started by Arlington County Commuter Services, has called for a meeting of transit tech types from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The plan for the event is to address transportation problems, discuss resources

and see what solutions the group can come up with. “It’s about rolling up your sleeves, bringing your laptop and attacking specific ideas,” says Mobility Lab director Tom Fairchild. There are three pressing projects on the table. One is developing bus maps that are easier to under-

stand (and don’t look “like someone dumped over a bowl of spaghetti,” Fairchild says). Another is finding a way to automate commute plans, so people can quickly learn about all of their options for getting to work — whether it’s by transit, bike path, slugging or vanpooling. The group will also take on the task of planning a standardized system of realtime transit information screens that could be rolled out at offices, restaurants and other businesses across the region. The goal of all these schemes is increased awareness. If people know their alternatives, Fairchild reasons, they’re more likely to get out of their cars. “We just need to ease people over these barriers to entry,” he says. Hack Day attendees are welcome to work on any project they wish. Been fiddling around with a Capital Bikeshare app? Come on down, share your work, and bounce ideas off those in the room. The point of the lab is collaboration, Fairchild says. After Saturday, the conversation will continue at the lab and on its website. Through a partnership with OpenPlans.org and Greater Greater Washington, they’re able to offer four-month fellowship positions to individuals who’d like to tackle these topics full time. (They’re hiring two software development fellows and one visual design fellow, who will each receive a stipend of $4,000 a month. Apply by emailing Tom. Fairchild@mobilitylab.org.) I’ll admit I have no clue how to solve these problems myself, but I look forward to taking advantage of the answers.

C[jhe CWo 9bei[ :kfedj ;djhWdY[ MWi^_d]jed Metro officials said Thursday they are considering closing the southern entrance to the Red Line’s busy Dupont Circle station for up to a year to replace all the escalators.

General Manager Richard Sarles said the highly unusual plan could get under way during the first few months of 2012. Sarles and other officials said the transit authority would go to great lengths to make sure that

while all the escalators on the south side are out of service, the north side of the station would remain in service. Without a complete shutdown, officials estimate, it might take years to complete the work. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

J[d O[Whi BWj[h own. Were you there? Did you know anyone who was? In the era of 9/11, WikiLeaks and a minute-to-minute news cycle, we crave information and authentic experience. So our experience, and everyone’s experience, is of enormous value. It was a shared one. And maybe we just can’t understand it still and need to look again. This anniversary, everyone’s looking for 9/11 stories, authentic, up-close and personal stories: the survivors, the families, the transformed, the winners, the losers and the dead. And we’re looking for how it affected everyone.

The planes will crash. You’ll hear police sirens, the voices of those who lived and many who didn’t. You’ll feel like you’re in the buildings. And then they’ll fall. There’s long been talk of a room in the Sept. 11 museum that will look something like this. Planners spoke years ago of an “immersive” area where visitors will hear, see and know what Sept. 11 really felt like. Maybe you’ll hear Brian Sweeney, a passenger on United Flight 175, calling his wife minutes before his plane barreled into the World Trade center’s south tower. “Jules, it’s Brian. Listen, I’m on an airplane that’s been hijacked,” his voice cracks. “If things don’t go well, it’s not looking good, I just want you to know I absolutely love you.” Or Betty Ong, a flight attendant on the second plane that was steered toward New York, talking about a stabbing in business class, a hijacking and something that had been sprayed around the cabin. “We can’t breathe,” she says. An immersion room? Who needs one? Ten years after it happened, Sept. 11 is everywhere. It’s difficult to move around the country and not experience a sliver of it —

the day — in some way. To some extent, the entire nation remains an immersion room.

9ebb[Yj_l[ ;nf[h_[dY[ L o ok no f a r t he r t h a n y ou r smartphone, where StoryCorps promises an oral history for every victim on a 9/11 memorial app. More than half a million text and pager messages sent that day are online, courtesy of WikiLeaks. (“DO NOT GET ON THE PATH TRAIN...THE WORLD TRADE CENTER IS ON FIRE,” reads one. And there’s “President has been rerouted wont be returning to washington but not sure where

he will go.”) The Internet Archive just put 3,000 hours of footage online of a week of Sept. 11, 2001, coverage beginning that Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. You can watch the twin towers vaporize into a dust plume on 20 different U.S. and international networks, and hear television anchors struggle to make sense of that incomprehensible event as it happens. Television brought the 2001 attacks to the world in real time, and forever linked the thousands who lived through it and the millions who watched. It became a collective experience, and, from

ever y angle, one of the most digitally documented events ever. And so it remains. Abraham Zapruder’s grainy film of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination is invaluable, but it’s just one, heavily analyzed angle. There are no emails from Pearl Harbor or D-Day, no text messages from the passengers of the Titanic sent as the great ship went down. So Sept. 11 will always be different for the generations that follow. More people will be able to see it and curate their own Sept. 11 story from a wealth of sources. We will never be too far from this past.

Beea_d] 8WYa For those who lived through it, we can re-experience it on demand, as often as we want. And this anniversary, again, we’re doing it. When it comes to the day, and everyone returns to the day, Sept. 11 is relived more than it is remembered. Why else is it that when the topic comes up in conversation, the first story is one’s

The AP posted the question on Facebook, asking people around the world to describe their most vivid memory of 9/11. The answers came within minutes, visceral, you-are-there remembrances as if it had just happened yesterday. Jeremy Suede, now 28, lived in Santa Clara, Calif., at the time. His mother banged on his door to awake him and put him in front of the television. “I got to the tv just in time to see the second plane hit and then I watched in utter disbelief as they fell,” he writes. “I remember feeling so helpless and it was the first time in my life something major had happened.” “The Day-9/11.” That’s the title of the memorial museum’s dayof section, which won’t open for a year. As it’s described online, it will present the events as they happened, moment by moment. “Using artifacts, images, video, first-person testimony, and realtime audio recordings from 9/11, the exhibition will provide insight into the human drama under way within the hijacked airplanes, the twin towers, and the Pentagon.” Families had long asked for an exhibit like this, so people would know and understand what happened. Charles Wolf, who lost his wife at the trade center, says it’s going to be rough. But “we don’t want this to be forgotten.” AMY WESTFELDT (AP)

mental illness. He had a steady job and a solid marriage of 20 years. But in the weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, he grew increasingly paranoid, thinking his rural town was the next target. He climbed trees with binoculars to look out for suspicious characters. He thought the trucking firm he worked for was secretly transporting explosives. After he landed in the psych ward, he was happy not just to get treatment but because he “felt the hospital was relatively safe, according to a case study published in the Southern Medical Journal. The patient was suffering from what his doctors called “persistent paranoia, and their report, published several years ago, serves as a reminder that in the days, weeks and months after 9/11, anyone could fall into the grip of fear. Now on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, the wounds have mostly healed. But there is still evidence of psychological aftershocks. According to a new Washington Post poll, almost half of Washington-area residents say the attacks caused The percentage a lasting change in their lives. of WashingtoIn 2004, 23 percent of Washingtonians said they nians who say Sept. 11 changed avoided attending a public event out of fear of an their day-to-day attack. In the new poll, the figure dropped to 17 percent. But in a region with about 5.5 million residents, lives, a new Washington that’s a lot. Post poll found. For some, the fear is linked to the 10-year anniversary. Usually, Tricia Siudut, 30, has no problem riding Metro. But Sunday is another story. “I know we have strong, intelligent people who work hard to make us safe, she said. “But I’m somewhat afraid to be underground that day. More than four in 10 men, women, blacks, whites, immigrants and native-born say the 9/11 attacks changed their personal life in a lasting way. Only among seniors does the event seem to have a muted effect; almost two-thirds report no change. Sherman Cohn, a law professor at Georgetown, knows exactly where he was when Pearl Harbor was attacked and when John F. Kennedy was shot. Sept. 11, like the other major historical events of his lifetime, “had a profound impact on the psyche of each of us. “But that was not the question, he said. “The question was, ‘How did it affect my life?’ And the answer is very little. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Another About-Face With Rex Grossman, Redskins start over at QB again this year J^[ H[Zia_di When the Redskins line up against the New York Giants’ Eli Manning on Sunday, they will be facing a quarterback who has started 103-straight regular season games and is about to assume his brother Peyton’s title as the NFL’s iron man. *0'+ FC Sunday | FOX

On the other hand, Rex Grossman — anointed the starter after winning the preseason battle with John Beck — will be the sixth quarterback the Redskins have started since Eli Manning was drafted in 2004, joining Patrick Ramsey, Mark

Good quarterback play is critical to success in the NFL, and for the past 20 years, the Redskins have lacked a stabilizing presence behind center. history, but coach Mike Shanahan is going to give him a shot. “To be the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins is a huge thing,” Grossman said. “I fully understand it, and it’s my goal to take it and run with it. “I want to play well. I want to play well against the Giants. I’m going to take it just this week – long-term issues will speak for themselves.” For Shanahan, the decision to

go with Grossman was based on hi performance in the preseason, bu there’s the added benefit of Gross man’s playing time last season. But with Beck waiting in th wings, will Shanahan have th patience to stick with Grossman for the sake of cohesion at the posi tion if he struggles? “We evaluat every position — that’s the natur of this game,” Shanahan said. “ know everybody wants to mak a quarterback controversy … bu you have to perform.” Grossman’s teammates are con fident that he can deliver not onl victories but also stability. “Rex brings a lot of comfor and consistency,” wide receive Anthony Armstrong said. “Stabili ty is important at every position. . Manning’s Season in Jeopardy Colts superstar QB undergoes another surgery on his neck Fhe <eejXWbb

RICKY CARIOTI/TWP

Another neck surgery has put Peyton Manning back in rehab and left his status for the 2011 season in jeopardy. Manning underwent surgery for the third time in 19 months Thursday, a procedure that is likely to keep the four-time MVP out significantly longer than just Sunday’s season opener at Houston — the first game he will miss in 14 NFL seasons. “The procedure is performed regularly throughout the county on persons of all walks of life, including professional football play-

=?7DJI Maybe John Beck will start the second half of the game.

=?7DJI The Giants are still better at every position than the Redskins.

H;:IA?DI Shanny’s tan combined with Hightower’s high power will deliver a win at FedEx Field.

H;:IA?DI Joe Theismann guaranteed a Redskins win. Good enough for me.

IJ;;B;HI Big Ben celebrates his recent nuptials with a win over an archrival.

IJ;;B;HI Big Ben is money in the M&T Bank; Pitt “steels” one in the Rust Belt.

H7L;DI Super Bowl losers are supposed to slump the following year, right?

COLTS (PLUS 8.5) AT TEXANS

J;N7DI If the Texans can’t win in the Colts’ first game without Manning, they have a problem.

9EBJI I think the Colts have been more prepared for playing without Manning than we think.

J;N7DI C’mon Man-ning! Kerry Collins and the Colts will get hammered by Houston.

J;N7DI Arian Foster’s hamstring is way less important than Peyton Manning’s neck.

9>7H=;HI The Chargers are one of the few that didn’t go nuts personnel-wise this offseason.

9>7H=;HI Donovan McNabb won’t be able to navigate the Vikings past Rivers and company.

NOTRE DAME AT MICHIGAN Ijeho B_d[0 Normally, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly’s screaming fit last week or his going with QB Tommy Rees would be the top story. But this is the first night game ever at the Big House. (8 P.M., ABC) A L L G A M E S P L AY E D O N S AT U R D AY

roster until we have a clear picture of his recovery process.” The Colts’ statement came just hours after team owner Jim Irsay wrote on Twitter that Manning would be out “awhile” and coach

Jim Caldwell promised to provide more clarity soon. They could have put Manning on injured reserve to open up a roster spot, but that would have meant he would not play at all in this season that will end with the Super Bowl played at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. The team confirmed that Manning had an anterior fusion procedure to treat the nerve problem that was giving him trouble. With Manning, the Colts have been a perennial Super Bowl contender. Without him, the most dominant team in the AFC South since its creation faces a daunting challenge — trying to become the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium without having Manning behind center for a significant portion of the season. The Sky Brightens For the Nationals It feels like the last time it wasn’t raining in D.C. was when Stephen Strasburg took the mound at Nationals Park on Tuesday night. Even Zeus — the Greek god whose emotions affected the weather — wanted to see whether the kid was really healthy. How good was Strasburg? Zeus cried shortly after the pitcher left the game but not before the Dodgers had 8o CWjj tied it, costing the pheIm[died nom a deserved win. Not only was Strasburg’s return a bright spot on a rainy day, but it was the brightest spot in a rather encouraging season. The fact that Washington isn’t in last place in September is amazing enough. Then add Jordan Zimmermann’s performance in his first full year back from his own Tommy John surgery and the emergence of Michael Morse, among others.

?\ j^[ eú [di[ _cfhel[i [l[d cWh]_dWbbo $$$ W $+&& h[YehZ eh X[jj[h YekbZ X[ h[Wb_ij_Y$ It’s all building toward what should be an even better 2012. Barring another injury, it seems Strasburg will be the ace the Nationals have hoped for. Throw Zimmermann into the mix and that’s about as good a top of a rotation as you’ll see outside out of Philadelphia. If the offense improves even marginally — we’re looking at you, Jayson Werth — a .500 record or better could be realistic. As this column is finished, the sky has finally cleared on Thursday and the Nationals have erased a 4-0 deficit. (They eventually lost 7-4.) Zeus must like what he sees, too. Terrapins Abuzz After Opening Victory They didn’t want Randy Edsall. They wanted the guy who fancied himself a pirate. They wanted Mike Leach, the Key West-dwelling former Texas Tech coach whose Air Raid offense lit up the scoreboard and whose colorful — and sometimes off-color — personality would bring attention to the program and fill Byrd Stadium on fall Saturdays, even if he remained entangled in a lawsuit against his former employer. Randy Edsall? Critics, including a great many fans, knew little about Edsall except that his straight-laced, militaristic personality and conservative offense at Connecticut didn’t exactly move the excitement meter. “Safe hire” was a common refrain. So much for that.

— R A NDY EDSA LL , MARYLAND’S NEW COACH, AFTER MONDAY’S VICTORY.

In front of a sold-out crowd and a national television audience Monday, Edsall, with a little help from Under Armour, authorized a pregame wardrobe change into possibly the most garish and most talked-about uniforms college football has ever seen. Then he commanded the sideline as Maryland unveiled a free-wheeling, hyperkinetic offense under new coordinator Gary Crowton that included exactly zero huddles after the first snap and marched up and down the field against Miami in a 32-24 victory. The only thing that stifled it, Edsall later complained, was that

QB Danny O’Brien and coach Randy Edsall led Maryland to a 32-24 win over Miami.

gram long without a national profile will not lack excitement this season. O’Brien, last season’s ACC rookie of the year, passed for 348 yards, and the team racked up 499 yards of total offense. The output was marred only by the unit’s inefficiency in the red zone. On eight drives, the Terra-

the game officials were too slow placing the ball after plays, forcing the Terrapins to stand around impatiently waiting to snap the ball. “The tempo we have is pretty serious. ... I think it wore [Miami] down,” sophomore quarterback Danny O’Brien said. It appears, suddenly, that a pro-

pins ventured inside the Hurricanes’ 20-yard line seven times but scored only one touchdown and settled for a slew of field-goal attempts. Edsall was loath to dwell on those failures after the game, saying they would be corrected, and stressed the bottom line: a full stadium, a resilient team and a gutty victory over a conference opponent. What he didn’t know yet was that the entire nation was talking about Maryland football. Sure, they were talking about the outlandish state-flag uniforms, but while the national audience was checking out the wardrobe, they were also watching a Maryland victory. Leach’s most famous postgame press conference came after a loss and included a rant about players spending too much time with their “fat little girlfriends.” For one day at least, no one in College Park was lamenting the absence of the pirate coach. “It was a great win for our university, our state, our players and coaches,” Edsall said. Chris Pontius and Bill Hamid each logged time with the U.S. national team over the past week, and Andy Najar made his long-awaited debut for Honduras, playing in a pair of friendlies. While Canada veteran and D.C. standout Dwayne De Rosario was also in action internationally, it’s the trio of franchise cornerstones that is bringing the national-team buzz back to United. “It’s good especially for us younger guys to be getting the experience at that level and being introduced to it,” Pontius said. “It’s something that can only benefit D.C.”

8WYa _d 7Yj_ed Between Hurricane Irene and an international break, D.C. United got an impromptu 20-day layoff between matches, and the majority of players should be well rested for a crucial battle against Chivas USA on Saturday (10:30 p.m., CSN). Chivas and United are both a point off the pace for the 10th and final playoff spot, and the two will meet twice in the next 12 days. A.C. NED DISHMAN/GETTY IMAGES

Excitement builds after uniforms and offense turn heads

Chris Pontius was a last-minute addition to the U.S. national team last week.

Pontius, 24, was a late addition to coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s roster, as he was brought in as an injury replacement to return to the national team for the first time since a January 2010 training camp. While he

didn’t play in last Friday’s match against Costa Rica and didn’t make the trip overseas for Tuesday’s contest in Belgium, the fact that he’s back on the radar is promising. Hamid didn’t play in the U.S. matches either, but the 20-yearold goalkeeper was on the bench as Tim Howard’s backup for both games after earning his first call-up last month. “No one really knows what to expect coming into the first [call-up],” Hamid said. “This one, I definitely made the transi-

tion, getting in there and getting the experience, feeling like a part of the team.” For the 18-year-old Najar, representing his native Honduras after a lengthy process is a source of great pride. He debuted as a substitute against Colombia last Friday before earning a start against Paraguay on Tuesday. “Being a national-team guy, you’re held to a higher standard,” Hamid said. “For D.C. to have a few guys doing it, it shows well.” AVI CREDITOR

You can never have too many shoes, especially if you’re Blake Mycoskie, founder of Toms. The footwear brand specializes in Argentine alpargata shoes (think flat espadrilles), but there’s a twist: For every pair sold (locally, at Nordstrom and South Moon Under), the company gives another pair to a needy child. Since Toms began in 2006, Mycoskie has sold 2 million pairs. His book, “Start Something That Matters” ($22, Spiegel & Grau), reveals his social entrepreneurship ideas. He’ll discuss it at Sixth and I Historic Synagogue Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. (Sixthandi.org). You say that things like overcoming fear and giving to the community are crucial to success. Why? People are realizing that making money or climbing the corporate

ladder really isn’t leading to any more security, and it’s definitely not leading to more happiness. People yearn to do something where they earn a living but do something of significance. What was your biggest challenge? We didn’t have a lot of resources, because this model had never been done. It wasn’t like we could go to the venture capital world or to the private equity world and say, “Hey, we’re going to start a shoe company where we give away shoes.” What experience did you have in shoe design? Zero. I had never taken one class or spent one hour in that industry. I’m learning stuff every day — everything from comfort to how you

is, “How do you build longevity?” To insulate us from being a trend, we’re making sure that our shoes are comfortable, that we continue to have a unique design perspective and that we continue to share the good work happening because of customers’ purchases. You started an eyewear line this year. Head-to-toe helping? We felt our one-for-one model could help a lot more people with more than just shoes. If we use it to save and restore a human being’s sight, that’s something powerful and exciting. What style of Toms complements D.C.’s signature look: the business suit? Cordones. They’re a lace-up that’s a bit more formal than our slip-ons. We do them in some leathers and a waxed canvas that gives them kind of a shine. When I have to wear a suit, which isn’t often, I wear cordones and get lots of comments. What’s on your feet right now? I’m barefoot, because I’m standing on the deck of my boat. STEPHANIE K ANOWITZ

Manolo says frankly, the Manolo is ready for the 2011 to be over today, so dismal has it been thus far. But then the 2012 is not looking so good at the moment, either, what with the presidential election and the Mayan Calendar Stones Apocalypse both predicted to rend the fabric of civilization in the coming year. Well, as the peoples say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going, while the rest of us, like the Manolo, who are not so tough, get going home, where they lie down on the couch with the cold compress over their eyes and they take the little nap. Later, after the light dinner, and perhaps the revivifying kir royale, the not-so-tough might then thumb through the latest catalog from the Fifth Avenue of Saks, where they will discover that the hottest color of the season is “bordeaux,” which is strangely similar to “burgundy.” Look! Here is the Paramour from B Brian Atwood ($450, Saksfifthavenue.com), the autumnal, bordeaux ankle boot in suede and snake print that will make even the gloomiest of gussies feel better about the upcoming season. ONCE THE MARK OF A EUROPEAN GENTLEMAN (or a n A mer ica n dandy emulating one), a pocket handkerchief was as de rigueur as a watch or hat. The 16-by-16-inch squares signified care and brought extra flair to standard suits. American guys haven’t paid much attention to this proper accessory since the JFK era. But recently, plaid or cheeky print varieties have been popping out of pockets across Washington, from the Hill to Georgetown. “My grandfather used to say a gentleman carries two: one for the lady; one for the schnoz,” says Jason Tesauro, co-author of “The Modern Gentleman: A Guide to Essential Manners, Savvy and Vice” ($16, Ten Speed Press). “The one for the lady lives in the pocket, and the one for the nose wasn’t to be seen.” Now, most men usually just show off the visually pleasing variety, folding squares into various shapes before sticking them into a jacket pocket. A fresh interest in mid-century dressing revived skinny ties and fedoras. Now, the same sentiment is making the squares hip again: “It started with the revival of the ’60s ‘Mad Men’ look,” says Eric Jennings, fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue Menswear. “But more men are also dressing business casual. Without a tie, a square gives a professional look.” Bold and colorful silk varieties like Hermes’

Did I LIKE “Bellflower?” That’s like asking whether I liked childbirth, which for me was 22 hours of Pitocinsaturated labor, complete with failed epidural and eventual C-section, which, because I gave birth at a teaching hospital, I got to hear narrated as the supervising OB helped the intern slice open my uterus. But when it was over, I could only think “Wow. Look at THAT.” That’s what “Bellflower,” a tiny little indie opening Friday, is like. 8o Ah_ij[d “Liking” a film is FW][#A_hXo different than recognizing whether it’s good. I like a lot of bad movies. “Bellflower” is not a bad movie; it might be a great movie. I didn’t like watching it, but I’m glad I did. As for the plot, let’s just say it’s the story of Woodrow (Evan Glodell, who also produced, directed and edited) and Milly (Jessie Wiseman), and how their relationship goes from “When Harry Met Sally” to “Natural Born Killers.” It is a brutal film, loud and frenetic and violent, and Glodell pushes every line past pleasure into pain — but not so far that you forget the movie was fun once upon a time. “Bellflower” was surely one of the most intense cinematic experiences I’ve ever had — I saw it this past spring and the memory still aches. Is it good? It has problems. But I cannot remember the last time I left a theater absolutely sure that I had seen the emergence of a talent that could both save and burn down the world. A World of Hurt

In “Contagion,” Matt Damon, center, must grapple with the death of his wife (Gwyneth Paltrow), the first victim of a deadly virus.

:edÊj :h_da J^[ MWj[h The disturbing thriller ‘Contagion’ may make you think twice about sharing beverages <_bc H[l_[m “Contagion,” a thinking man’s horror movie about a viral pandemic from the writing-directing team of Steven Soderbergh and Scott Z. Burns, plays less like a conventional medical thriller — think “Outbreak” — than like a dramatic reading of a “Nova” episode, performed by Hollywood’s elite. It’s stuffed with A-list

actors — Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law — running around frowning and spitting out terms like “pathognomonic,” “fomites,” “paramyxovirus” and “R-naught number.” A few of them are defined; most are not. That’s the scariest thing about “Contagion.” We never know exactly what it is we’re supposed to be afraid of. Then again, that’s not entirely true. Based on Soderbergh’s shooting style in the film’s first few seconds, which include ominously tight close-ups of a hand on a bus pole and

To develop a realistic story for “Contagion,” writer Scott Z. Burns, above, worked with top virologists to determine what truly could happen. The scenario they settled on — an epidemic from a virus jumping species — is one scientists say is likely someday. “Everything I learned says that we are overdue, and that it is inevitable as we go into these ecotones and encroach into the wild spaces,” Burns says. “We’re going to shake things out of the treetops that we haven’t seen before.” (AP)

a bowl of cocktail peanuts, it’s anything and everything that we come in contact with that’s terrifying. What “Psycho” did for showers, “Contagion” aims to do for shaking hands and sharing water glasses. Otherwise, “Contagion” is not all that disturbing, except perhaps on an intellectual level. Paltrow, whose Beth Emhoff is the first to come down with the new disease — dubbed MEV-1 — is dead mere minutes into the movie, after lapsing into a scary, mouth-frothing seizure.

Hundreds of millions of victims follow, though Beth’s husband, Mitch, played by a schlubby-looking Matt Damon, remains immune. Rather than putting Mitch in the thick of things, “Contagion” sends him into immediate quarantine, as the world around him descends into a chaos of looting and panic. Though “Contagion’s” trailer would have you believe it’s a nail-biter, its pleasures are mostly cerebral, not visceral. Its real heroes are the buttoned-down bureaucrats from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (run by Fishburne) and the medical professionals working to identify, treat and contain the disease (Winslet and Cotillard). If this is an action-thriller, it’s one that makes med school look sexier than the Marines. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST POST )

MWhh_eh F=#') Director: Gavin O’Connor Stars: Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton In a Nutshell: Two brothers, the sons of a former boxer, compete against each other in a mixed martial arts tournament.

Judging from its poster — a stark black sheet on which two shirtless dudes display a dozen well-defined abs and four frightening pecs — “Warrior” should be just another slab of lunkhead cinema, a thin story designed to fill UFC coffers. Don’t be fooled. While “Warrior” does offer enough jaw-snapping action to sate any ’roid-rager, it works on deeper levels, too. Tom Hardy plays Tommy, a

black-sheep son whose boxer father, Paddy Conlon (Nick Nolte) was a drunk so abusive that Tommy and his mother fled to the other side of the country, where the youth nursed her through terminal illness before joining the Marines. Tommy’s brother Brendan (Joel Edgerton), stayed at home to be near his sweetheart. They’re now married

with kids, and although they have three jobs between them, they’re financially underwater. Independently of each other, these sons discover an opportunity to turn aggression into desperately needed cash: In Atlantic City, the Sparta tournament will pit mixed martial arts combatants against each other for a $5 million prize. The tale’s premise — that two estranged siblings will wind up in the same worldwide championship, fighting to the final round despite their mutual inexperience — may be implausible. But the film finds a way to sell it, relying largely on the strength of its two leads.

A Strenuous Transformation Tom Hardy says he was ready to quit “Warrior” on the very first day. After a two-hour warm-up at the gym, he had two hours of kickboxing, followed by two hours of Muay Thai, followed by two hours of choreography and another two hours of weight lifting, under the tutelage of JJ Perry, who described Hardy as “carb-depleted, angry and moody” during production. “For seven weeks, seven days a week, we were just eating and hitting pads and doing choreography to music,” Hardy says. COLOMBIANA (PG-13, 105 minutes) The protagonist of “Colombiana” is a young woman who has strong feelings for her parents, a warm relationship with her boyfriend and a proclivity for sketching the delicate Colombian orchid for which she’s named. the taciturn Lonergan and the crustily misanthropic Woodrow Dolarhyde join forces to track down the interstellar outlaws and bring their people home. A.H. CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (PG-13, 118 minutes) “Crazy, Stupid, Love” opens with a clever montage of couples’ feet engaging in all manner of furtive flirtation under restaurant tables. When the camera lands on Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) and his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), their troubles are clear. She’s wearing comehither heels while Cal is decked out in schlumpy New Balance sneakers. She’s still trying, but Cal has given up, which accounts for why Emily announces at that same restaurant that she wants a divorce. He numbly agrees, moves out of their comfortable house and into a depressing bachelor pad and begins hitting a singles bar, where he comes under the tutelage of serial seducer Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), a playah Pygmalion who takes Cal on as a personal makeover project. What ensues is the kind of smooth, fitfully funny, finely machined romantic comedy that is expertly calibrated to hit all the rom-com happy places. A.H. Audiences who discovered actress Jessica Chastain (right, with Sam Worthington) in this year’s “Tree of Life” and “The Help” can get another dose of her in “The Debt.” heroes. But how they caught Vogel, and their attempts to bring him back alive, are the meat of the story. JOHN DEFORE D O N ’ T B E A F R A I D OF THE DARK (R, 99 minutes) Augmented by just enough CGI to bring its icky gremlins to life, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” feels retro in all the right ways. Screenwriters Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins adapted the script from a 1973 TV movie of the same name. The changes they made pull the tale further back, though, into the realm of fable — especially their decision to change the protagonist from an adult to a little girl: Sally (Bailee Madison) has been sent by her preoccupied mother to live with her father and his new girlfriend (Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes) in the grand old mansion they’re renovating. Sally doesn’t want to be there but can’t resist exploring. Soon she discovers a hidden basement whose rusty, boltedup ash pit speaks to her. Scratchy, faint voices whisper to Sally, offering friendship. Followers of del Toro’s work will see reminders of “Pan’s Labyrinth” here, but the storyteller is writing for another

director, first-timer Troy Nixey, and keeps the action rooted in the real world. J.D. FINAL DESTINATION 5 (R, 92 minutes) Nothing in life is certain but death and sequels. Make that sequels about death — teen-oriented exploitation movies in which generic young actors meet their fates in a series of gruesome, occasionally suspenseful scenes. The latest of these, “Final Destination 5,” isn’t as novel as it hopes to be, but it gets the job done. Here, the villain is fate itself, a sense that the entire physical world is loaded with inevitable death for those who somehow evade the Reaper the first time he comes calling. The camera in “FD5” treats inanimate objects — malfunctioning air conditioners, say — as killers whose mindlessness only makes them more unstoppable. While viewers will get plenty of nervous giggles out of watching as burping water-coolers or (yes!) inappropriately ringing cell phones trigger fatal mishaps, the filmmakers don’t milk the this-leads-to-that element that made Rube Goldberg famous. Once the initial trigger happens, there’s Continued on page 32

not a lot of fun left in the scene. J.D. FRIGHT NIGHT (R, 120 minutes) “Fright Night” improves on the premise it has been handed, producing a modernized version of a decades-old story that’s

superior to its predecessor in virtually every aspect. In this case, “Fright Night” director Craig Gillespie remakes Todd Holland’s 1985 horror-comedy of the same name. The story still steals from Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece “Rear Window” with awkward teenager Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) casting suspicions that his mysterious new neighbor, Jerry (Colin Farrell), is a vampire. A GOOD OLD FASHIONED ORGY (R, 95 minutes) This comedy, starring “Saturday Night Live” jokester Jason Sudeikis as Eric, follows a tight-knit group of 30-year-olds, whose friendships date to high school. During the summer months, the New Yorkers make frequent treks to the Hamptons mansion of Eric’s father, where they throw raging theme parties. Such classy affairs include the White

At its best, “Fright Night” mixes sly pop-culture references, “Twilight” jabs and Scooby gang jokes with legitimately suspenseful horror sequences sure to unnerve even the most seasoned genre fans. [dj[hjW_dc[dj beeaekj Trash Bash, featuring mullets, tractor races, a few visits from the local cops and bean dip served in a toilet bowl. But when Eric’s father decides to sell the place, the team considers how to go out with a bang. And they decide to do it by planning an intimate evening of group sex, complete with a “Kama Sutra” theme. STEPHANIE MERRY THE HELP (PG-13, 137 minutes) Fans of Kathryn Stockett’s folksy, ingratiating novel of the same name can rest easy: The director, Tate Taylor — a childhood friend of the author who, like her, grew up in Jackson, Miss., where the story is set — has preserved the book’s story line, characters and confiding tone with loyalty worthy of any best friend. Readers who felt they came to intimately know characters such as Celia (Jessica Chastain) and Skeeter (Emma Stone) are likely to greet their alter egos on screen like cherished, long-lost friends — especially the nobly suffering Aibileen, here brought to quietly watchful life by Viola Davis. Skeeter gets a job as a newspaper cleaning-advice columnist, but when she asks Aibileen for some tips, she realizes that the real story lies in the emotional lives of black women who virtually raise their white employers’ children, but who are treated by those same families as unfit to share a kitchen utensil, much less political or economic power. A.H. ONE DAY (PG-13, 103 minutes) Anyone who has read the book will be prepared for the radical turn “One Day” takes; those who haven’t may want to brace themselves. The star-crossed British couple at the center of this familiar object lesson are Emma and Dexter, whose college graduation-night hookup on July 15, 1988, ends in a platonic cuddle amid vows always to stay friends. “One Day,” which screenwriter David Nicholls adapted from his own novel, then traces the erstwhile couple’s friendship in episodic snapshots captured on succeeding July 15ths, tracing their lives and careers as the brainy, slightly cynical Emma seeks the writer’s life and Dexter — rich, spoiled, lazy — becomes a cheesy MTV talk show host. As personified by Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, Emma and Dexter make for a pretty convincing friends-who-should-be-lovers couple, a la Harry and Sally et alia. A.H. OUR IDIOT BROTHER (R, 96 minutes) “Our Idiot Brother” turns out to be mistitled. It should be called “The Brother We Treat Like an Idiot,” and that goes

as much for the filmmakers as the dysfunctional family at the core of this easygoing misfire. Paul Rudd plays Ned Rochlin, a perpetually blissed-out biodynamic farmer who in the film’s first scene sells pot to a police officer. When he gets out of jail, he embarks on a serial-crash with his three sisters, upending their lives with his anarchic honesty and unbridled naivete. A . H .

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (PG-13, 110 minutes) First, the good news. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the much-anticipated prequel to the sci-fi movie franchise of the late ’60s and early ’70s about a world ruled by apes, gets one thing exactly right. The apes, which we see on the cusp of world domination, are both terrifying and sympathetic. That’s not an easy trick. Yet it’s

Incubus used to meld hip-hop beats with metal riffs — not unlike fellow Californians the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But over the years, the five-piece band’s vibe has mellowed significantly, and now, touring behind its seventh album, “If Not Now, When?,” Incubus is making the kind of music that used to rule alternative rock radio. No Rules is one of many small D.C. theater companies that don’t have a home and have only their productions (and not sweet, swanky venues) to make them memorable. Its latest show is “Stop Kiss,” a tragic play about two women who are attacked for kissing on a New York City street and the aftermath of the violence. H Street Playhouse, 1365 H St. NE; through Oct. 2, $25; Norulestheatre.org.

You have a couple weeks to catch the offerings of the DC Shorts Film Festival, but the best way to kick it off is with the official opening party. The bar will be open, there will be cheese snacks, and you can wander among the creepy wax figures at Madame Tussauds and scare credulous buddies by doing a zombie Beyoncé voice. Madame Tussauds, 1001 F St. NW; Fri., 9 p.m., $25; Dcshorts.com. (Metro Center)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your fine memory is not likely to fail you as you conjure images from the past that support a current ideological project. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) What is asked of you is not likely to be anything out of the ordinary, though it may be dressed up in fancy new clothes. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) That which was lost is likely to be found — and you’ll have good reason to thank a friend who has kept you sane during the search. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The work you do will be colored by emotional currents that you are only beginning to be aware of in a subtle but pervasive way. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You want to hear the truth, but the truth itself is far more complex at this time than you or anyone else might have expected.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll progress according to a fixed schedule of accomplishment and study, and if either is out of balance, much is likely to be threatened. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Strategy is the key, and if you make the mistake of thinking that you can improvise everything, then success will be elusive.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may not be expected to excel, but you have what it takes to surprise not only your critics but also your most vocal supporters as well. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Conflict of any kind is unnecessary — and though some may seek it out for some reason, you are best to steer clear at all costs.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
