Authorities in Bolivar, Ohio, say a grocery store employee was charged with felony theft for eating deli meat. Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Hale told The Columbus Dispatch that an employee of Giant Eagle was charged Friday with stealing $9,200 worth of food. The store’s loss prevention manager got a tip that an employee had been eating three to five slices of ham a day for eight years. Authorities say she also sometimes ate salami. (AP)

A woman was in for a surprise when Miami Beach police pulled her over. She and her boyfriend got out of the car. An officer asked the boyfriend if he had anything to say. That’s when the man, identified as Kenneth, got down on one knee, held out a ring and said, “I just want you to marry me.” A video tweeted by the police shows her covering her face, saying, “Oh, my God ... crazy.” Finally, she says, “Yes,” and police say, “Congratulations, guys!” (AP)

A Mississippi high school senior had to quickly discard her crown after being named homecoming queen — and put on a football helmet. Kaylee Foster was crowned homecoming queen of Ocean Springs High School before Friday night’s football game. She then put on her football uniform and later kicked the winning extra point to lead her team to a 13-12 victory over George County High School, local news outlets reported. (AP)

Struggling not to stutter Maryland gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous talks about running with his speech disorder has occasionally experienced abnormal silences — also known as “blocks” — during television appearances, and tripped over words during interviews. The Hogan campaign appeared to take advantage of one of Jealous’ “blocks” in July, releasing a video titled “Ben Jealous’ 7 Seconds of Silence” that showed Jealous pausing before answering a question about the Eastern Shore. The video suggested that the pause showed Jealous didn’t know much about the region. Jealous, a Rhodes Scholar and venture capitalist, said the video was “no different than anything that I’ve dealt with my entire life. I didn’t sweat it.” In August, Jealous visited the National Therapy Center, a small office in Bethesda, and talked with students, teachers and a parent about what it’s like to have a stutter. “This is one of the big challenges that I had to take on early, just learning how to express

MARYLAND Aides to Ben Jealous prepped him for days, telling him the key words that he should emphasize in the 90-second introduction to his first debate of the Maryland gubernatorial primary. And then it happened, about halfway through: He began to stutter. On stage. In front of his rivals for the Democratic nomination. “I’m running to make sure that we fully fund our schools, that we end killings of unarmed civilians by the p-p-police,” Jealous said. The former NAACP chief, who is a regular commentator on cable news, is one of 3 million people in the United States who have a stutter, a neurodevelopmental disorder that first exhibits itself in early childhood. Most of the time, the Democrat’s speech disorder is not obvious while he is campaigning. But since he announced his bid to unseat Gov. Larry Hogan, R, more than a year ago, Jealous

myself and my ideas,” Jealous said at the start of the discussion, which was streamed live on his Facebook page. Mileah Kromer, an associate professor of political science at Goucher College, said Jealous’ decision to talk openly about his stuttering may appeal to voters. “All politicians need a moment that humanizes them,” Kromer said. “Anytime a candidate can show a struggle, one that people can identify with, it can only help.”

One D.C. newcomer turned to a “roommate résumé” to beat the steep competition in the search for shared housing. Sam Alhadeff, who recently completed a master’s at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, shared his résumé in a D.C. housing Facebook group last week, listing his “skills,” like doing the dishes quickly, and “roommate perks,” such as taking his phone calls in another room. The post has been liked more than 1,000 times. Alhadeff said Sunday that he is close to picking a place to live and will move this weekend.

Deacon under Wuerl calls for him to resign RELIGION A highly visible member of Washington’s Catholic clergy has made a dramatic declaration calling on Cardinal Donald Wuerl to resign, the latest blow to Washington’s embattled archbishop. Deacon James Garcia, in his role as a master of ceremonies at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in the District, has assisted Wuerl during major liturgies. But Garcia wrote in a letter to Wuerl, which the deacon published online Saturday, that he refuses to assist in any Mass led by Wuerl. Because deacons vow obedience to their bishop, it is a

bold gesture. “The time for cowardice and self-preservation is long past. Victims cry out for Wuerl justice and the faithful deserve shepherds who are not compromised. ... [N]o amount of apology will suffice unless and until bishops and other complicit clergy are removed or resign,” Garcia wrote. And he addressed Wuerl directly: “I cannot, in good conscience, continue to assist you personally, whether as an assisting deacon or a master of ceremony.”

MOKE UPDATE

Baby gorilla loves getting belly tickled Like any infant, Moke — a Western lowland gorilla — is teething and learning his body parts. Officials at the National Zoo gave an update Friday on the little fellow, who is 5 months old. Primate keeper Melba Brown wrote in a zoo blog that the baby gorilla is basically starting school, as trainers are working more with him through a mesh safety barrier. Moke is learning to “present his body parts for inspection,” when keepers say the body part — belly, ear, head, foot, hand, nose or leg. That allows them to check for cuts or other injuries. And Moke gets praised verbally or receives a treat. Brown wrote, “I get a big reaction out of Moke whenever I tickle his belly — he seems to love this and other play behaviors.” (TWP)

Since a Pennsylvania grand jury in August released a major investigative report cataloging alleged child abuse committed in the state by more than 300 priests, Wuerl — who oversaw some of those priests during his 18 years as bishop of Pittsburgh before he became archbishop of Washington — has faced calls to resign from numerous corners. Garcia’s letter, published on a blog run by Garcia’s friend Joelle Casteix, an advocate for clergy sex abuse victims, adds the voice of a member of the clergy who works closely with Wuerl. Family smells gas, leaves before house explodes A family of five escaped their Howard County home just before it exploded late Friday night, authorities said Saturday. According to Howard County fire officials, the department was alerted by the homeowner, who reported a gas leak inside the house. Shortly after firefighters arrived, there was an explosion. Two adults and three children got out before the blast. No one was injured; the family dog also was safe. (THE WASHINGTON POST) LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA.

Authorities see progress in stopping car break-ins The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said last week that the number of thefts from cars fell 31 percent after the introduction last year of a program called #9PMRoutine that urged residents to check locks. VIRGINIA Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia has ventured deep into his state’s red zone in recent weeks — Appomattox, Lee County and portions of the Eastern Shore that once were safely Republican. Little of that has to do with Corey Stewart, his Republican opponent in the Nov. 6 election. Instead, Kaine is devoting time and money in an effort to expand the map for Democrats in Virginia to help his party win back control of the House. “We’re going to send a message of hope this November,” he recently told a cheering crowd of business people packed inside a Virginia Beach hotel ballroom to meet Democrat Elaine Luria. “Do you want to be part of that?” With that, Luria, a former U.S. Navy commander in her first campaign, had more volunteers in a bid against Republican Rep. Scott Taylor that has been gaining steam amid charges that his staffers forged signatures to get a spoiler candidate on the ballot. Kaine, far ahead in poll numbers over Stewart, has traveled this summer to all seven House

Kaine’s political action committee has donated $5,000 to each of the seven challengers — the maximum allowable amount — spending a total of $66,420 in Virginia this year, records show. The main focus has been on four districts Democrats consider vulnerable: Taylor’s 2nd District, which is largely Virginia Beach but includes the Eastern Shore; the 5th District in central and western Virginia being vacated by Rep. Thomas Garrett; Rep. Dave Brat’s 7th District in central Virginia; and Rep. Barbara Comstock’s 10th District in Northern Virginia. ANTONIO OLIVO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trash cleanup device heads out to sea Engineers are deploying a trash collection device to corral plastic litter floating between California and Hawaii in an attempt to clean up the world’s largest garbage patch in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. The 2,000-foot-long floating boom is being towed from San Francisco to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch — an island of trash twice the size of Texas. It was created by The Ocean Cleanup, founded by Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old innovator from the Netherlands. The buoyant, U-shaped barrier with a tapered 10-footdeep screen is intended to act like a coastline, trapping some of the 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic scientists estimate are swirling. The Ocean Cleanup, funded by donations, is planning to deploy 60 free-floating barriers in the Pacific by 2020. (AP)

WEATHER A rapidly strengthening Hurricane Florence chugged across the Atlantic on Sunday toward a possible direct hit on the U.S. Southeast late this week, triggering warnings to people up and down the coast to get their emergency kits ready, map out escape routes and fill sandbags. After briefly weakening to a tropical storm, Florence came roaring back as a Category 1 hurricane Sunday morning, climbing past the 74 mph threshold as it pushed westward about 700 miles southeast of Bermuda. Drawing energy from the warm water, it could be a fearsome Category 4 with winds of 130 mph or more by Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said. The Miami-based hurricane center said that it is too early to know what path the storm will take but that it could roll ashore in the Carolinas by Friday. Forecasters urged residents from South Carolina to the MidAtlantic to get ready — and not just for a direct blow against the coast. They warned that Florence could slow or stall after coming ashore, with some forecasting models showing it could unload a foot or two of rain in places, causing devastating inland flooding. “Pretend, assume, presume

Local forecast The Washington, D.C., area will be particularly susceptible to flooding because of above-normal rainfall in the region since May. that a major hurricane is going to hit right smack-dab in the middle of South Carolina and is going to go way inshore,” South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said. The state’s emergency management agency said it is “preparing for

the possibility of a large-scale disaster.” Florence’s effects were already being felt along the coast, with dangerous swells and rip currents in some spots. On North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the town of Nags Head posted no-swimming flags on beaches. In Charleston, S.C., along the coast, city officials offered sandbags to residents. The Navy planned to send ships from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia out to sea. Florida-based Carnival Cruise Line rerouted its cruise ships. The governors of North and South Carolina and Virginia declared states of emergency far ahead of the storm to get ready. RUSS BYNUM (AP)

Pence: I was never in talks to oust Trump

(THE WASHINGTON POST)

(THE WASHINGTON POST)

Omnipresent president Both parties agree that the midterm elections are centering on Trump POLITICS The striking split screen as last week wound down — former President Barack Obama made his campaign trail debut mourning the departure of decency and lawfulness from the White House just as President Trump called on the Justice Department to hunt down a nameless personal enemy — neatly framed the midterm dynamic. For Democrats and Republicans, and the 45th president himself, it is all about Trump. Midterm campaign cycles traditionally have centered on the party in power. Opposition to former President George W. Bush’s Iraq War powered the 2006 Democratic wave, while a backlash to Obama’s health care law fueled the 2010 Republican takeover. But this year is shaping up differently. The Nov. 6 election that will determine control of

Congress is likely to hinge on the president to a remarkable degree. The spike in Democratic enthusiasm that has Republicans fearful of losing their House majority is driven largely by opposition to Trump personally — his attacks on civic institutions, his impetuousness and the chaos that tornadoes around him — strategists on both sides say. “Ever since he came down the escalator to announce his presidential campaign, he’s been the only thing that matters in politics,” GOP consultant Josh Holmes said. All week, doubt hovered over the president about his fitness for office. New reporting in Bob Woodward’s book “Fear,” coupled with an anonymous editorial in The New York Times penned by a senior official in the administration, revealed that some of Trump’s top advisers are so alarmed by his whims and wishes that they have thwarted or ignored some of his directives. Congressional candidates who may have preferred to peddle their own messages were forced

Polls favor Democrats Two months ahead of the midterm elections, Democrats hold a clear advantage over Republicans. A Washington Post-ABC News poll late last month found that registered voters favor the Democratic candidate over the Republican candidate in their congressional district by 52 percent to 38 percent. The survey also pointed to broad disapproval of President Trump’s job performance and frustration with the political system generally. (TWP)

to weigh in, and gasped for oxygen in the Trumpian news cycle. “Everything that’s going on is Donald Trump, first, last and always,” Democratic pollster Peter Hart said. Last week at a campaign rally in Billings, Mont., Trump boiled the Democratic campaign agenda down to a single word: impeach. The president’s oversimplification placed himself at the heart of the campaign, with Trump offering up his political future as a

central reason to vote Republican. “They like to use the impeach word. ‘Impeach Trump,’ ” he said. “I say, ‘How do you impeach somebody that’s doing a great job that hasn’t done anything wrong?’ … If it does happen, it’s your fault, because you didn’t go out to vote.” Obama came out of political hibernation Friday to deliver a major address outlining the Democratic case for the midterm elections. Obama, who until now had studiously avoided mentioning Trump by name, called his successor a “symptom” of a dark turn in the nation’s politics toward bigotry, fearmongering, corruption, dishonesty and an erosion of institutions. “This is not normal,” Obama said at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “These are extraordinary times. And they’re dangerous times. But here’s the good news. In two months we have the chance — not the certainty, but the chance — to restore some semblance of sanity to our politics.”

POLITICS Vice President Pence said he was never part of discussions to remove President Trump from office and would take a lie detector test “in a heartbeat” to prove that he didn’t write last week’s anonymous New York Times op-ed, whose author claimed to be part of a “resistance” movement within the administration. In interviews with Fox and CBS that aired Sunday, Pence also said that he is “100 percent certain” that no one from his staff authored the op-ed and that he would be “more than willing” to sit for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his ongoing Russia probe. The appearances by Pence come as Trump has stepped up his calls for the Justice Department to investigate the author of the piece, which described a “two-track presidency” in which some senior aides are actively working to thwart Trump’s “misguided impulses” and have even discussed removing the president from office via the 25th Amendment. Pence declined to say what, if any, law the author of the op-ed might have broken. But Pence maintained in his interview on “Fox News Sunday” that Trump’s “concern is that this individual may have responsibilities in the area of national security.” FELICIA SONMEZ

nation+world Trump officials say they rebuffed coup plans by Venezuelan dissidents NATIONAL SECURITY The Trump administration met several times last year and early this year with Venezuelan military officers purporting to be dissidents plotting a coup against President Nicolas Maduro, but ultimately rebuffed their requests for assistance, U.S. officials said. The operation was small and closely held, according to a senior official, who described the meetings as “all listening. We listen to anyone who wants to talk to us.” President Trump, both publicly and privately, has raised the possibility of U.S. military action in

Venezuela, although aides have repeatedly dissuaded him, according to a number of officials and people familiar with the episodes, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss foreign policy and intelligence matters. Maduro has frequently accused the U.S. of plotting with his opponents, and of economic and actual warfare against him. The outreach by the officers “highlighted the level of desperation” in Venezuela, and the Trump administration was eager to understand what was going on inside the armed forces, according to another person familiar with the meetings. But “we had very little confidence in the ability of these people to do anything, no idea at

U.S. reverses sex claims against alleged spy Federal prosecutors have backtracked on their allegation that a Russian woman accused of working as a secret agent offered to trade sex for access, according to a Justice Department court filing. White House National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis said in a statement that “the United States government hears daily the concerns of Venezuelans from all walks of life — be they members of the ruling party, the security services, elements of civil society or from among the millions of citizens forced by the regime to flee abroad.” Venezuela is in the midst of hyperinflation and severe humanitarian and political crises that have sent millions fleeing to other countries in the hemisphere. Kosovo Albanians block roads amid Serbian visit

PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA | Soldiers march Sunday during a parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of North Korea’s founding. In keeping with leader Kim Jong Un’s new policies, the emphasis was firmly on the economy. The North rolled out some of its latest tanks and marched its best-trained goose-stepping units, but held back its most advanced missiles and devoted nearly half of the event to efforts to build the domestic economy.

of Washington’s young defense, which held the Cardinals to 213 yards by overwhelming their offensive line and humiliating quarterback Sam Bradford, who threw for 153 yards and an interception. A late Arizona touchdown by David Johnson ended Washington’s hopes of its first shutout since 1991, but Sunday’s win was full of positive momentum. Washington tried to establish

its power running game on the first possession. While the Redskins moved the ball well, going from their own 23 to Arizona’s 29, the drive stalled on two penalties, and they were forced to punt. Still, that drive set a tone for the afternoon. Washington’s second drive got started with a short Peterson run. That was followed by a quick pass to tight end Vernon Davis, a Thompson burst for 13 yards, another Thompson run

for 14, then five straight Peterson runs, before Washington’s first score of the year: an Alex Smith pass to Thompson to put the Redskins up 7-0. Washington forced a threeand-out before a 15-play, 73yard drive that took up 9:06 and seemed to demoralize the Cardinals players and the crowd. There were no big plays, no explosive runs or long passes, but the slow march was perhaps even more insulting for the Arizona defense. When Peterson burst up the middle to make the score 140, the game felt as if it were over. The Redskins scored on a third straight drive with more short passes until Smith hit tight end Jordan Reed with a 4-yard touchdown pass that seemed to put the game out of Arizona’s reach. The boos thundered down on the Cardinals as they left the field at halftime. Nearly two hours later, the booing would have been even louder, but most of the fans had already left. New-look offense dominates in the first half as Redskins run away with their first win

Jordan Reed’s 4-yard TD puts the Redskins up 21-0 just before halftime.

Newcomers fit Redskins like a dream Finishing runs with legs still churning and avoiding hits with quick lateral bursts, Adrian Peterson showed he has plenty to offer in his Redskins debut Sunday. The 33-year-old ran 26 times for 96 yards and a touchdown, giving Washington a brutish complement to nimble Chris Thompson. While Peterson’s play was the best the Redskins could hope for, quarterback Alex Smith, above, performed exactly as advertised. He moved the chains with short passes, completing 70 percent of his throws for 255 yards. He found his best weapons — Thompson and Jordan Reed combined for 111 yards receiving and two TDs. The additions fueled the most methodical attack we’ve seen under coach Jay Gruden, one that allowed the Redskins to top the Cardinals in time of possession by more than 16 minutes.

Opening statement REDSKINS 24, CARDINALS 6 Barely more than a month ago, Adrian Peterson was home in Houston, waiting for the call no NFL team had made, hoping to revive a career destined to end in football’s Hall of Fame. On Sunday in Glendale, Ariz., he was rushing through the Cardinals, yards flying like chunks of sod from beneath his cleats. By the time the Redskins’ season-opening 24-6 win over Arizona was over, Peterson had 96 yards rushing and another 70 receiving. Washington had found not only a running game, but perhaps a more complete team than it has had in many seasons. Running back Chris Thompson mixed in with Peterson effectively, and the Redskins had 182 rushing yards to power an explosive, consistent offense. It was the first time the Redskins won a season-opener under coach Jay Gruden, who had dropped the previous four. Lost in the dominance of the run game was the performance

Rookie Josh Allen replaced him in the third quarter, going 6-for-15 for 74 yards in Buffalo’s most lopsided loss since 2007. STORM 75, MYSTICS 73 A lot of Breanna Stewart in the closing minutes and one big defensive stop in the final seconds has the Seattle Storm on the cusp of a third WNBA title. Stewart scored nine of her 25 points in the fourth quarter, Sue Bird came up with a key defensive play in the final 10 seconds, and the Storm held off the visiting Washington Mystics 75-73 on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the WNBA Finals. Seattle will head east for Game 3 on Wednesday (8 p.m., ESPN2) needing only a split in D.C. to claim the third title in franchise history. Since the WNBA went to a best-of-five format for the finals in 2005, no team has lost the first two games and fought back to force a Game 5. Stewart went nearly 18 minutes of game time without scoring, but was responsible for six of Seattle’s final seven points. The league MV P got her touches in the closing minutes, while Washington didn’t make sure star Elena Delle Donne got her opportunities. Delle Donne finished with 17 points but was scoreless in the fourth quarter and took just one shot. “I think we fell in love too much with me getting the ball on the block. ... Playing in space opens up my teammates, also opens myself up,” Delle Donne said. “We’ve got to find a way to not become one-dimensional and just try to force it in.” The Mystics had several issues Sunday besides getting the ball to their star. For the first time this season, they didn’t hit a 3. They were outrebounded by 10 and had just 10 assists on 29 made baskets. Yet the opportunity was there to go home with the series even.

Kristi Toliver, right, and the Mystics failed to make a 3-point shot in a game for the first time all season.

Kristi Toliver’s two key jumpers pulled Washington within 74-73. When Stewart missed two free throws with 16 seconds left, Washington had a chance to take the lead. That’s when Bird, the oldest player in the league at 37, relied on her experience. Toliver appeared open for a 3 and Bird lunged forward. That

opened a lane on the baseline, but as Toliver was going by, Bird reached from behind to poke the ball free. The ensuing scramble resulted in a jump ball. Seattle controlled it and ran off seven seconds before being fouled and making a free throw for a two-point lead. Washington was out of timeouts

— and time to get a good shot. Washington believed Bird had fouled Toliver, especially with Seattle having a foul to give. “I got fouled going baseline. I think it was pretty blatant,” Toliver said. “Sue Bird took the foul. Officials didn’t understand that.” Bird insisted she was going for the steal. TIM BOOTH (AP)

The U.S. Tennis Association announced Sunday that Serena Williams would be fined $17,000 for three code violations that occurred during her controversial loss in the U.S. Open women’s final Saturday. Williams was warned for receiving coaching during the match against Naomi Osaka, penalized a point for destroying her racket and docked a game at a critical moment in the second set for what chair umpire Carlos Ramos deemed verbal abuse. Williams emotionally told him that she does not cheat and would “rather lose.” She then called Ramos “a thief” on the court for enforcing rules that are typically waived for male players. “For me to say ‘thief’ and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark,” Williams said after her match. Toni Van Pelt, the president of the National Organization for Women, provided a statement to The Washington Post pointing out that “men stretch the rules all the time and are lionized for being ‘bad boys’ ” and calling for Ramos’ dismissal. Examples spread on social media, including video of Roger Federer telling a chair umpire, “Don’t [expletive] talk to me” during the 2009 U.S. Open men’s final, and Jimmy Connors calling an official an abortion during a U.S. Open match in 1991. Add the trophies he has earned at six Australian Opens, one French Open and four Wimbledons, most recently in July, and the 31-year-old Serb pulled even with Pete Sampras for the third-most majors among men, trailing only Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (17). Get support to give support Targeted psychology programs can help train aspiring therapists and counselors to give trauma victims the assistance they need HIGHER EDUCATION In her six years working at a homeless services nonprofit for young adults, Lauren Cross heard stories of domestic violence, child abuse and trafficking. She knew she could do more to support victims than just listen. “That’s really what pushed me to go back to graduate school,” says Cross, 31. “I liked my job, but I felt like I wanted to do more than what I was doing.” She enrolled in the doctor of psychology professional psychology program at George Washington University, where she just finished her pre-doctoral internship, the last requirement before officially getting her degree. Her next step? A yearlong postdoc fellowship in the trauma disorders unit at Baltimore’s Sheppard Pratt Health System.

“Trauma of any kind can impact every aspect of a person’s life,” she says. “Providing therapeutic services can be lifechanging in helping a person readjust and be able to live life in the way they want.” Mass shootings and other tragic events in recent years have thrown a spotlight on the need for mental health services, especially in dealing with trauma. While there are no statistics illustrating that those kinds of events are leading more people to get graduate degrees in psychology, it is a field that’s showing strong employment growth. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of psychologists is projected to grow by 14 percent from 2016 to 2026 — double the growth rate for all occupations

The first step for prospective students is choosing the degree that matches their interests and career goals. At first, Cross thought a research-heavy Ph.D. was her only option, and she wasn’t thrilled by that. “I know that research is really important and it’s great that people are interested in that, but it’s not an area of interest for me,” she says. She thought she would have to “suffer through” years of doing research, but then discovered the option of a Psy.D. doctoral degree. At about four to six years in length, Psy.D. programs are shorter than Ph.D. programs, which tend to take five to seven years and emphasize clinical training over research. “It’s … more focused on CONTINUES ON PAGE 18

The app, called myStudentAid, can be downloaded to Apple and Android cellphones. It is currently available in a beta version; the full app will be released on Oct. 1, when the government makes the 2019-2020 FAFSA available. working with patients, which is what I wanted to do,” Cross says. If you want to contribute to the general knowledge of how trauma affects people, “a clinical psychology Ph.D. is for sure the way to go,” says Nathaniel Herr, associate professor of psychology at American University. “But if you’re interested in the practitioner side, there are other paths that are more direct.” In addition to the Psy.D., those include options like master’s degrees in social work (Howard, Gallaudet and Catholic universities have programs locally) or master’s degrees in clinical mental health counseling (check out area programs at Trinity Washington,

Gallaudet and George Washington universities). Counseling only requires a master’s degree and state licensure for independent practice, as opposed to the doctorate required for psychologists to practice independently. It’s a faster route for some people interested in working with trauma victims or others needing mental health services, but it’s also a different approach to treatment. Psychologists use more testing and assessments to diagnose patients, while counselors “look at the world through a wellness and whole-person perspective,” says Lynn Linde, senior director of the Center for Counseling Practice, Policy and Research at the American Counseling Association. Psychologists would also be more likely to work with

patients with serious mental illnesses, while a counselor would deal more often with more general therapy issues. Linde likes the job prospects for students who complete counseling graduate degrees. “Nothing will ever take the place of that one-on-one or small-group intimate relationship developed through the counseling process,” she says. “Counselor jobs aren’t likely to be outsourced by AI or any other technology coming down the pike.” In the past couple years, Katherine Marshall Woods, adjunct professor in George Washington University’s professional psychology program, began including more information about trauma and threat assessment in classes she teaches. That includes instruction on how to

assess whether a person is at risk of endangering him- or herself or others on a large scale. “I always have a group of students who come to my office after [class] and say, ‘How can I learn more about this?’ ” Whether a student decides to go for a master’s or doctorate degree, getting some relevant

prior experience in the field is a good idea. That could include working at a suicide hotline or volunteering at a community services center. “It’s a big commitment to go into a Ph.D. program for six years of your life,” Herr says. “If you haven’t had a taste of what it’s like to talk to someone who’s in crisis in a more formal setting, you might get in and then realize it’s not for you.” Students who study trauma will likely find lots of options for putting their degree to use. “You could do crisis work; you could work abroad,” says Marshall Woods. “Students … find there’s not just one path they can take to work with individuals with trauma. They can certainly have a very varied career.” BETH LUBERECKI (FOR EXPRESS)

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20

6:30 P.M. (ARLINGTON CAMPUS)

Deirdre Aikin got her first job at a tattoo parlor at age 12. She’s now a resident tattoo artist at Tattoo Paradise.

This tattoo artist’s work is skin-deep Name: Deirdre Aikin, 47 Position: Tattoo artist Salary: Starts at $40,000

What she does While you were busy scribbling your crush’s name in your diary, Deirdre Aikin was busy giving her first tattoo. “I used to do handpoke tattoos for classmates when I was in seventh grade,” says the D.C. native and artist. “I was every parent’s worst nightmare.” The early bloomer got her first tattoo — a version of the D.C. flag with three X’s in place of the stars, known as the D.C. hardcore symbol — at the age of 11, but the self-proclaimed “super dork” says she knew even earlier that she was destined for a career in body art. “There’s a picture of me as a kid with swirls of finger paint all over my body,” she says. “My mind always just went to the body. To me, people are more interesting when they’re colorful.” Today, Aikin makes lasting impressions on her clients at the

Rockville location of Tattoo Paradise, where she has been a resident artist since 2012. Though she began her career 25 years ago specializing in realism and intricate Japanese styles, her work now encompasses nearly every design imaginable. Aikin, whose mother and grandmother were artists, estimates that she does up to four tattoos a day, and says that she has a threemonth waitlist. Though if you have a convincing enough story, she’s likely to make time for you. “If you hit my heartstring, I’m like, ‘Fine. I got you,’ ” she says. Aikin got her first job at a tattoo shop when she was 12 years old (you read that right) by lying about her age. Back then, she says, tattoos were considered lowbrow. “If you think about the people who originally got tattooed, it was sailors and soldiers,” Aikin says. “And the women who got tattooed, generally speaking, were carnies or prostitutes.” Much has changed since the

early days of tattoos, and even since Aikin got her start: Today, the rise of social media has helped tattooing gain footing as an art form. “Society has accepted that this is the way some people look,” Aikin says. In the coming months, Aikin and her husband, Grant, plan to open a studio of their own — Triple Crown Tattoo Studio and Art Gallery — in Towson, Md. “I’m frigging nervous,” Aikin says. Which is a phrase we’re willing to bet she’s usually on the receiving end of.

How she got the job Following that first job as a preteen, Aikin attended D.C. public schools before shipping out to California for community college. For her sophomore year, she transferred to Parsons School of Art and Design in New York City. While living in the city, she gained formal tattoo training by apprenticing at a local tattoo shop. “It’s a lot of sweat equity: You CONTINUES ON PAGE 20

scrub a lot of toilets, take out the trash,” she says. “It’s a trade, so the process is like any other trade craft. You stick with a senior person and you move up as you gain your skill.” After graduating with a bachelor of fine arts with a concentration in Asian art history, Aikin got a scholarship to Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and completed a master of fine arts with a concentration in sculpture. All the while, Aikin tattooed to make her way through school at underground shops, gaining customers by word-of-mouth. “Once you’re an able tattooist, you can take that job anywhere,” she says. “It’s a mobile job: If

you’re confident, you can get a job almost anywhere.” Reflecting back on her start in the early ’80s, Aikin says she had the additional barrier of being a woman in a field dominated by men. “I came in under my own regard, not by dating a tattoo artist or through a friend,” which was previously how many women were able to gain access, she says. “I tell some of the younger women artists now, ‘You’re welcome.’ ”

Who would want this job Because tattoo artists deal with a wide swath of people and personalities, tolerance is a must. “You have to be open to different cultures and ways of thinking,” says Aikin. “I don’t see people for anything except for their heart. You can’t judge anybody

for anything but what’s inside.” You should also be communicative to ensure clients are happy with their ink. “I’m a little bit of a teacher, a little bit of a psychiatrist and sometimes a little bit of a parent,” Aikin says. “You have to be able to give instruction so that you can do the best job.” And lastly, you should be in the field for the love of the work, not the prestige. “A friend of mine told me that being a tattoo artist is the closest thing you can be to being a rock star,” Aikin says. Be prepared to be choosy about where you work, because it can feel like someone new is opening a new tattoo shop every day, Aikin says, “even if they shouldn’t be.”

art, it’s not necessary to have a traditional education. Rather, the best tattooers are experts with a needle. “Some people can draw

beautiful things, but they don’t have the technical skill to put the tattoo on correctly,” Aikin says. “A piece of paper doesn’t age like skin.” The most important step to becoming a successful tattooer, Aikin says, is to get a legitimate apprenticeship with someone who has at least 10 years of experience, ideally for three to five years. “Find an artist you respect, spend some time with them at the shop, and they’ll likely take a shine to you and take you in,” she says. And never, ever pay for an apprenticeship, Aikin says: It should be a paying position like any other job. “I run into a lot of kids who are like, ‘I paid for an apprenticeship,’ and I’m like, ‘You got scammed.’ ” HOLLEY SIMMONS (FOR EXPRESS)

FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE FUTURE 0F THE HUMAN RACE. It’s 5:30 a.m. and the sun hasn’t quite peeked through the morning sky. Volunteers gather to start the day with a two-mile run around East Baltimore. Mingled in the group of runners are Baltimore City residents whose lives have been ravaged by homelessness and hardship. Nevertheless, they are making a comeback and taking strides, one run at a time, to get back on their feet. Bloomberg School alumna Jaclyn Range, MPH ’14, leads the local chapter of Back on My Feet, an organization that helps Baltimore City residents who are homeless find the confidence and self-esteem they need to pursue education and find employment through the power and discipline of running. At the Bloomberg School, students like Jaclyn put research, passion and knowledge into action to positively influence lives in Baltimore and cities around the globe. Won’t you join us?

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘American Horror Story: Apocalypse’

Jim Carrey plays the melancholy host of a children’s TV show in Showtime’s new series “Kidding.”

Not a laughing matter Jim Carrey channels Mister Rogers in the bleakly fascinating dramedy ‘Kidding’ TV REVIEW It took Mister Rogers, the beloved PBS children’s show host who died in 2003, many more years to posthumously break free of the condescending jokes and weird rumors about his true nature. As the hit documentary film “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” made clear this summer, there was no big mystery behind Mister Rogers — his goodness was the real deal. His status now is sacrosanct. That’s not entirely great news for Showtime’s dramedy “Kidding” (which premiered Sunday), a melancholic and strangely fascinating character study starring Jim Carrey as Jeff Pickles, the Mister Rogers-esque star of a long-running TV show called “Mr. Pickles’ Puppet Time,”

where all is not well backstage. Even though “Kidding’s” creator Dave Holstein (“I’m Dying Up Here”) and producer-director Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) have said their show is not intended as a cheap comic exercise in imagining Mister Rogers as having a darker private life, there are too many initial similarities to completely dodge. But stick with “Kidding” for a while, because its empathy for its main character is no mere folly, and the performances — especially Carrey’s — subtly push the material toward an achingly valid exploration of the human side of hero worship. The outside friendliness of Mr. Pickles the TV personality masks the fact that, as Jeff, he’s

Catherine Keener and Frank Langella co-star in “Kidding.”

still deeply grieving the death of his adolescent son, Phil, who was killed in a car crash a year earlier. Now separated from his wife, Jill (Judy Greer), and struggling to relate to his other son (Phil’s twin brother, Will,

both played by Cole Allen), Jeff is barely holding on. The cast also features Frank Langella as Jeff’s executive producer, while Catherine Keener plays the show’s chief puppet-maker. It’s easy to detect in the writing and structure a steady twinge of the surreal, which matches Gondry’s peculiar yet effective tone. What’s not murky here is the deep river of sadness that flows through “Kidding,” even as it puts Carrey’s comedic skills to their best use in a long time. If he were still alive, Fred Rogers probably would find plenty to appreciate in “Kidding,” particularly in one regard: At its core, it offers a story to grown-ups about healing and forgiveness.

GW’s Homeland Security Master’s Program provides a pioneering education on counter-terrorism, intelligence analysis, emerging security threats, emergency management, and relevant legislation, enhancing the implementation of policy and security practices in both the public and private sectors. Designed for working professionals, you can earn your degree in as little as 18 months, attending class one night per week and one Saturday a month.

@RYANROSENBLATT, tweeting about Saturday’s US Women’s Open final, in which Serena Williams was given three penalties for coaching/cheating, racket breaking and verbal abuse. Williams lost to Naomi Osaka. Umpire Carlos Ramos was slammed for the calls. Many noted that male players such as John McEnroe had done worse and never received a violation.

“Representation is so important. It’s something we wanted to put in this game, even in a small way like this.” @BRYANRENNO, responding to tweets about the LGBT pride flags in the new Spider-Man game for the PlayStation 4, for which he was a developer. Players were moved by the inclusion, seeing it as an important step in the gaming community, which often faces criticism due to some gamers using homophobic slurs while playing.

“Serena is 100% right. Male players are allowed to scream, curse, break rackets, yell at referees and they get away with most of it. She does it and she’s penalized. It’s sexist.”

“Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear plaid.”

@BAREFOOTCOPY, tweeting about Tyler Linfesty, 17, who attended

President Trump’s rally Thursday in Billings, Mont. Linfesty was standing behind the president and very visible on TV. During the rally, he made a variety of skeptical faces at various statements that Trump made. His questioning looks led the campaign team to ask him to leave, but not before he began trending as #PlaidShirtGuy.

“The look on Elon Musk’s face as he’s smoking weed looks like he’s thinking about inventing weed.” @BASSOONJOKES, discussing the Tesla CEO’s appearance Thursday on Joe Rogan’s podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Rogan casually picked up a blunt, lit it and took a hit. He offered it to Musk, who also smoked from it. Though it’s unclear whether Musk inhaled, Telsa’s stock dipped by 9 percent Friday.

“When everyone thinks you’re gonna hang it up soon but you know it’s merely the beginning of the Bearded Era.” @WHOISALEXJACOB, reacting to

longtime “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek’s revelation that he had grown a beard for the game show’s upcoming 35th season. There has been rampant speculation that Trebek will resign as host before his contract expires in 2020.

EASY

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may attract attention in a way that is very different from what you had intended. Others will want to take part in what happens as a result. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You have no reason to try to block any person or event from your memory at this time. Trying to remember can be helpful. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You cannot have it both ways today; you must either remain silent about a perceived injustice or come clean about your culpability. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’re not likely to believe the news that comes your way today, and yet there is something about it that will tug at your conscience.

FRIDAY’S SOLUTION

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You

may find yourself working closely with someone whose behavior doesn’t mesh with yours — but this can be worked to your advantage. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your offer of gratitude to someone who did so much to get you where you are will mean much to others as well as the intended recipient. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) A minor sacrifice on your part is likely to pay off in a major way today — but take care that your loss isn’t permanent.

FRIDAY’S SOLUTION

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You

may face more adversity today than you had expected; your inner strength and sense of resolve are nearing a high.

TODAY: The steadier rain should exit to the north by midmorning, leaving us with a few scattered showers and storms. The main story is increasing warmth and humidity as light winds come from the south. A few peeks of sunshine will warm things up, too. A few scattered showers will linger through dusk before dissipating.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Where you are and where you are going may be much closer together at this time than you know. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Someone you’ve had your eye on lately is likely to return the gaze — and what happens as a result may well be remembered for quite some time.

“What I find very funny is that there’s so much beheading in this, and yet people want to talk about my penis.”

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj nearly got into a fight as they exchanged words Friday at the Harper’s Bazaar Icons party as part of New York Fashion Week. In videos posted to social media, Cardi B can be seen lunging toward Minaj before being pulled away. A source close to Cardi B explained to TMZ that the rapper wanted “to address the lies Nicki was spreading.” Cardi B also threw her shoe at Minaj during the point-blank scuffle but missed the target, TMZ reported. Photographs showed Cardi B sporting a large bump on her forehead while being escorted away by security. (EXPRESS)
