New York Lottery officials said Monday that 73-yearold Dale Farrand recently won the $10 million prize on a Cash Spectacular scratch-off ticket. NICHOLAS DOYLE (MAGNOLIA BAKERY)
THE DISTRICT If any company could launch the next dessert craze to hit the District, it’d be Magnolia Bakery. Yes, the same New York-based confectionery credited with kickstarting America’s cupcake fad in the early 2000s. The boutique bakery, which opened in 1996 and shot to fame after brief cameos on “Sex and the City” and, later, “Saturday Night Live,” opened its first Washington location at Union Station on Monday. The chain, best known for its banana pudding and colorful cupcakes, is the latest dessert destination to open at Union Station. The shop joins the French patisserie Laduree, candy chain Sugarfina and Lady M Cake Boutique. Unlike certain competitors (cough, Crumbs), Magnolia was able to outlive the cupcake bust of 2014. “My kids used to walk into Crumbs and their eyes would

No,” says Bobbie Lloyd, Magnolia’s chief baking officer. “We keep it classy and classic [at Magnolia]. What we do, we do really well, and we’ll continue to do that.” Lloyd and chief executive Steve Abrams, who bought the bakery from its original owners in 2006, plan to launch more than 200 franchise locations in the next five years.
The 1,350-square-foot express store at Union Station will serve the same popular confections from Magnolia’s flagship location on Bleeker Street in Manhattan, along with some special D.C.-exclusive menu items to be announced later this fall. “It’s been very difficult to find something that would be considered a food very specific to D.C. Virginia orders evacuations
VIRGINIA
Report finds problems with elections systems Virginia’s elections systems have multiple problems, including unreliable technology and a leadership structure susceptible to undue political influence, according to a new report. The Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission — the Virginia General Assembly’s watchdog agency — said Monday that it found no largescale voter fraud in the state but cited several areas to improve the systems. The report recommends trimming the number of political appointees working at the elections department. (AP)

National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst said the agency is monitoring forecasts to determine whether conditions warrant deploying the levee across 17th Street NW, just south of Constitution Avenue. It would be the first time officials used the levee. Officials have conducted four practice runs to put the levee in place. The levee is made of two concrete and stone walls on either side of 17th Street. In the event of a flood, a barrier of metal posts and panels would be installed with a crane to span the street

WEATHER Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, D, on Monday ordered the evacuation of about 245,000 residents in flood-prone areas as Hurricane Florence strengthened on its path toward the East Coast. Residents were to be evacuated by 8 a.m. today in the Hampton Roads area — including portions of Virginia Beach, Hampton and Norfolk — as well as part of the Eastern Shore. Northam said he has requested 21 swift-water rescue teams from other states and activated 1,500 of the state’s 6,000 National Guard members, with the rest on standby. The Category 4 storm rapidly intensified Monday with winds gusting to 140 mph. The National Hurricane Center said Florence is expected to strengthen to 150 mph before making landfall somewhere on the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic coast Thursday. Forecasters said the hurricane could slow or stall out over the Mid-Atlantic later this week, which could lead to heavy rain and winds that could down trees. Northam said refusing to comply with the evacuation order would be a misdemeanor, but officials said they don’t have the resources to go door-to-door. As for where evacuees should go, Northam said, “go to higher ground and inland.” The Navy on Monday ordered warships in Norfolk out to sea to

Trial starts in family’s slaying Defense points finger at another suspect in 2015 murder of four THE DISTRICT The tragedy in May 2015 permeated the nation’s capital. The bodies of a father, a mother, their 10-year-old son and the family’s housekeeper were found in a burning multimillion-dollar home in upper Northwest D.C. The victims, investigators found, had been suffocated, beaten, stabbed and set on fire. Police said they believed it likely would have taken more than one person to carry out the killings of Savvas Savopoulos, 46; his wife, Amy Savopoulos, 47; their son, Philip, 10; and their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa, 57.
The couple’s teenage daughters, Abigail and Katerina, were away at boarding schools during Wint the attack. The break in the case came with an unlikely piece of evidence: a piece of crust from pizza delivered to the home when police believe the killer was holding hostages inside. On it, police said, they found the DNA of a Lanham, Md., man who was a former employee at Savopoulos’ steel and iron company. The trial is set to begin today in D.C. Superior Court for that man, the only suspect arrested. Daron Wint, 36, faces 20 charges including first-degree murder, kidnapping and other crimes. He has pleaded not guilty.
Federal prosecutors allege that Wint held the victims hostage as he ordered Savvas Savopoulos to have $40,000 delivered to the house as ransom. Wint then killed the victims and made off with the cash, fleeing in the family’s Porsche. Wint has a long of alleged assaults and threatening behavior, according to court records. Wint’s lawyers have said they uncovered evidence implicating someone else as the killer. Judge Juliet McKenna allowed the defense to wait until trial to publicly disclose their alternate suspect’s name. Defense attorneys have also filed a motion contending they had learned that D.C. police and the Department of Forensic Sciences may have improperly handled some evidence. KEITH L. POLITICS The White House said Monday that talks are underway with North Korea on setting up a second summit meeting between President Trump and leader Kim Jong Un, as the two sides seek to put stalled nuclear negotiations back on track. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that Kim requested the follow-up to the historic Singapore summit in June in a “warm, very positive letter” to Trump. No decisions have been made regarding timing or a venue. The announcement was the latest sign that Trump, despite growing frustration, remains heavily invested in the efforts to get Pyongyang to comply with pledges to denuclearize that were made during the Singapore meeting. Trump abruptly canceled a planned visit by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Pyongyang three weeks ago, citing a lack of progress. Sanders cited North Korea’s
decision not to include ballistic missiles in a military parade in Pyongyang over the weekend as a sign that the Kim regime was taking steps not to antagonize the United States. But other White House aides struck more cautious notes Monday. National security adviser John Bolton said the administration is “still waiting for them” to take significant action. Among other things, the U.S. is seeking a detailed declaration from the North over the size of its nuclear and ballistic missile arsenals. “President Trump can’t make North Korea walk through the door he’s holding open. They’re the ones that have to take the steps to denuclearize,” Bolton said. Foreig n policy a na lysts warned that Kim’s willingness to meet with Trump was not a signal that Pyongyang would move forward with serious efforts to denuclearize. Rather, they said, Kim’s goal is to convince Trump to sign onto a deal that would declare a formal end to the Korean War, without giving up significant concessions. Florence strengthens to Category 4 hurricane
POLITICS
DeSantis quits House as he runs for governor
Meteorologists predict ‘Harvey-esque’ rain as system nears Carolinas HOOFED ANIMALS
KEN BLEVINS (THE STAR-NEWS VIA AP)
WEATHER Florence exploded into a potentially catastrophic Category 4 hurricane Monday as it closed in on North and South Carolina, carrying winds up to 130 mph and water that could wreak havoc over a wide stretch of the eastern United States later this week. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ordered the state’s entire coastline to be evacuated starting at noon today and predicted that 1 million people would flee. The storm’s first effects were already being seen on barrier islands as dangerous rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway. Communities along a stretch of coastline that is vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change prepared to evacuate. For many people, the challenge could be finding a safe refuge: If Florence slows to a crawl just off the coast, it could bring torrential rains to the Appalachian mountains and as far away as West Virginia, causing flash floods, mudslides and other dangerous conditions. The storm’s potential path also includes half a dozen nuclear power plants. National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham warned
Chris Rayner helps customers load their cars with supplies at a Home Depot in Wilmington, N.C., as residents prepared for Hurricane Florence.
that Florence was forecast to linger over the Carolinas once it reaches shore. People living well inland should prepare to lose power and endure flooding and other hazards, he warned. “It’s not just the coast,” Graham said. “When you stall a system like this and it moves real slow, some of that rainfall can extend well away from the center.” By noon Monday, Florence was centered about 1,230 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, N.C., and moving west at 13 mph. Its center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas today and Wednesday and approach the coast of South Carolina or North Carolina on Thursday, the
National Hurricane Center said. Several meteorologists said Florence could do what Hurricane Harvey did last year over Texas, dumping days of rain. “I think this is very Harveyesque,” said University of Miami hurricane expert Brian McNoldy. “Normally, a landfalling tropical cyclone just keeps on going inland, gradually dissipating and raining itself out. But on rare occasions, the steering patterns can line up such that a storm slips into a dead zone between troughs and ridges.” North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said his state was “in the bull’s-eye” of the storm and urged people to “get ready now.” JONATHAN DREW (AP)
Herds share migration tips, study shows Animals learn from experienced members of the herd about where to find the best food, according to new research published last week in the journal Science. Researchers tracked the movements of bighorn sheep and moose in Wyoming, Idaho and South Dakota and compared the GPS data on the animals to the locations of the best forage. They found that the longer a herd had been established, the better the tracked animals were at finding the best forage, and the more likely they were to migrate. The long, slow improvement in forage-finding over decades indicates that herds build on the cultural knowledge across generations. (AP)

Cumulative effort: Moonves’ accusers refused to give up and with specifics nailed down tight. You couldn’t read the latest piece without knowing that Moonves was done. Phyllis Golden-Gottlieb, a now-retired TV executive, told Farrow that she filed a criminal complaint late last year with the Los Angeles Police Department, accusing Moonves of “physically restraining her and forcing her to perform oral sex on him, and of exposing himself to her and violently throwing her against a wall in later incidents.” They worked together in the 1980s. Jessica Pallingston, a writer, charged that Moonves “coerced her into performing oral sex on him when she worked as his temporary assistant, in the nineties, and that, after she repelled subsequent sexual advances, he became hostile, at one point calling her a ‘c---.’ ” Moonves has denied wrongdoing, saying only that he had consensual relationships with three of the six women in the most recent article. We’ve seen it all before. Over the two years since Gretchen Carlson filed suit against Fox boss Roger Ailes — a legal action that kicked off a world-changing movement and brought down another seemingly inviolable media figure — some things have become clear. Corporations even now are inclined to disbelieve women and to fiercely protect their own rainmakers. They may start an internal investigation, and make pleasant noises about workplace safety, but they would very much like to look the other way. And they do.
Victims’ parents form coalition to halt hazing
MICHAEL BUCKNER (GETTY IMAGES)
Charming. Accomplished. Visionary. And, if you believe the highly credible accusations, one more thing: abusive. The first three qualities of CBS chief executive Les Moonves seemed as though they would allow him to stay at the peak of Hollywood power — or at least exit gracefully, parachuting from the heights with a massive severance. But the women, 12 of them, who claim that he abused his power by harassing or attacking them, would not be denied. They kept coming forward. With names attached. With detailed incidents over decades. “These women are coming out now,” reporter Ronan Farrow said Sunday on CNN, because “they have been extraordinarily frustrated by what they perceive to be inaction on the part of CBS and its board.” Farrow told The Washington Post on Monday that speaking out, even now, “often requires a huge leap from them, putting their careers on the line to confront a powerful person.” With new reporting in hand, Farrow built on his July investigation in The New Yorker with a devastating follow-up Sunday. A mere eight hours after it was published, CBS announced that Moonves was out. And not only was he out, but the foot-dragging CBS board would be radically reshaped. What made the difference? The cumulative power of the stories that women told Farrow, with their names attached,
CBS chief executive Les Moonves resigned late Sunday after 12 women accused him of sexual misconduct.
Severance for Moonves? CBS said in a filing Monday that it would contribute $120 million to a trust that could pay a massive severance — or none at all — to Les Moonves, depending on an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. CBS also said it would give $20 million to charities “that support the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace.” (TWP)
Until the combination of meticulous journalism and courageous accusers willing to take a risk forces them to see reality. This is what powered Harvey Weinstein’s demise, too, with Farrow’s reporting and that of The New York Times. It happens in politics, too, as shown by The Washington Post’s investigation of Roy Moore, the former Alabama judge with an alleged
Chinese billionaire Jack Ma to step down from Alibaba in 2019; Daniel Zhang to replace him
predilection for teenage girls. Women were willing to be named and to describe details of their encounters. And voters decided they did not want Moore in the U.S. Senate. Against the fierce resistance of a paternalistic, selfprotective and often sexist culture, anonymous accusers and vague charges accomplish nothing. EDUCATION Tim Piazza and Marquise Braham told their parents they just wanted to make some new friends by joining fraternities while away at Penn State. Neither got much of a chance: They died before their 20th birthdays, after brutal fraternity hazing rituals. Now their parents are launching a nationwide antihazing campaign and, after too many similar deaths, national leaders of fraternities and sororities are joining them. “We will do anything that we can to save a life and to prevent another shattered family,” Piazza’s father, Jim, said by phone Sunday from New York, where he; Braham’s father, Rich, above; and other parents were preparing for media appearances to announce their campaign. The fathers said they have found an ally in Judson Horras, head of the North American Interfraternity Conference. Horras brought aboard his National Panhellenic Conference counterpart, Carole Jones. Their organizations together represent nearly 100 fraternities and sororities nationwide. One of the first actions for the new coalition, Horras said, is to press legislatures in all 50 states to toughen anti-hazing laws. They want lawmakers to make it a felony to force a student to consume alcohol during an initiation. And Horras said that by next fall, hard liquor of 15 proof or more will be banned from IFC frat houses. JOHN ROGERS (AP)

DALLAS The case against a white Dallas police officer who shot and killed a black neighbor in the neighbor’s home will be presented to a grand jury, which could decide on more serious charges than manslaughter, the district attorney overseeing the case said Monday. Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson said her office will first collect evidence surrounding Thursday’s fatal shooting by officer Amber Guyger, who told authorities that she had mistaken the neighbor’s apartment for her own. The officer was arrested Sunday night and booked into jail in neighboring Kaufman County before being released on bond. Lawyers for the victim’s family questioned why it took three days for Guyger to be charged. One said the officer should have been in handcuffs the night of the shooting, instead of three days later. They also wondered why, based on news reports, Guyger was so quick to use deadly force against Botham Jean, 26. When asked why Guyger was allowed to surrender somewhere other than Dallas County’s jail, Johnson said the decision was made by the Texas Rangers, which are also investigating.

Officer Amber Guyger killed a man after going in the wrong apartment.
Citing a law enforcement official that it did not identify, The Dallas Morning News reported that Guyger had just ended a 15hour shift when she returned in uniform to the South Side Flats apartment complex where she and Jean lived. She parked on the fourth floor, instead of the third, where she lives. When she put her key in the unlocked apartment door, it opened. Inside, the lights were off. Then she saw a figure in the darkness, the newspaper reported. The officer concluded that her apartment was being burglarized, drew her weapon and fired twice. When she turned on the lights, she realized she was in the wrong unit, according to the paper. RYAN TARINELLI AND KEN MILLER (AP)

State Department says decision follows lack of progress on peace talks WASHINGTON The Trump administration ordered the closure of the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Washington on Monday and threatened sanctions against the International Criminal Court if it pursues investigations against the U.S., Israel or other allies. The moves are likely to harden Palestinian resistance to the U.S. role as a peace broker. The administration cited the refusal of Palestinian leaders to enter into peace talks with Israel as the reason for closing the Palestine Liberation Organization office, although the U.S. has yet to present its plan to resolve the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The Palestinians accused the administration of dismantling decades of U.S. engagement with them. Shortly after the State Department announcement, President Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, launched a broadside against The Haguebased International Criminal Court. Bolton declared that the ICC “is already dead” to the U.S. He also threatened the court and its staff with sanctions if it proceeds with investigations into

alleged war crimes by American troops in Afghanistan. The closure of the PLO office — the latest in a series of moves targeting the Palestinians — was centered on the fact that no “direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel” are underway despite previous warnings, the State Department said. The administration had told the Palestinians last year that closure was a distinct possibility unless they agreed to sit down with the
Israelis. It has yet to release its own much-vaunted but largely unknown peace plan, although it said it still intends to do so. Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said the move was “yet another affirmation of the Trump administration’s policy to collectively punish the Palestinian people, including by cutting financial support for humanitarian services including health and education.” MATTHEW LEE AND SUSANNAH GEORGE (AP)

VALUABLE KNEE
Packers don’t know status of Rodgers
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
NFL defensive coordinators finally have film on the Redskins’ new offense. They can see a shift to running more often, a quarterback who breaks down coverage by scurrying himself, some read-option plays and lots of short passing patterns within 10 yards of the line. Coach Jay Gruden switched up his pass-first philosophy Sunday, confusing Arizona in Washington’s easy 24-6 victory on the road. The perfect mix of play calls left the Cardinals constantly guessing wrong. “It helps to have the whole playbook open,” Gruden said. “I was having trouble calling plays because there were so many good ones that I liked that we could get to.” Gruden’s task now that the league has seen his new scheme is to tailor it to the opponent each week. Washington can probably repeat the formula against Indianapolis on Sunday. The rain
expected from Hurricane Florence favors a ground game that will turn FedEx Field’s grassy marsh into a mosh pit between the 20-yard lines. With Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson delivering a one-two combination against Arizona, Gruden can feel comfortable ramming past the Colts, whose passing game behind quarterback Andrew Luck will be compromised by poor weather. But by Week 3 against Green Bay, Gruden will need to shuffle his offense. The Packers and then New Orleans are more vulnerable against the pass, and Carolina will counter with a balanced defense in Washington’s fifth game. As long as Washington’s offense stays healthy, balance is its big advantage. The Redskins can run or pass. It makes no real difference to quarterback Alex Smith, who even ran eight times Sunday on top of his 30 pass attempts. Washington didn’t get to its deep passing packages, play out of the shotgun or call for many outside running routes.
WASHINGTON POST AND GETTY IMAGES
Balance is the key: Redskins won’t run wild all year
Redskins coach Jay Gruden, top, found a winning formula by dialing up runs to Adrian Peterson, bottom left, and Chris Thompson on Sunday, but he’ll likely present a more diverse offense in the coming weeks.
The Redskins just played smash-mouth ball behind a line that’s one of the NFL’s best when healthy. Smith threw high-percentage passes and went off script only when he faced pressure. Even then he didn’t take risks. The Redskins didn’t have such flexibility last season because injuries depleted the offensive line and forced them to sign free agents off the street to play running back. Now, the team looks to have its most balanced attack since 2001, when coach Marty Schottenheimer’s squad passed for 2,487 yards
and ran for 1,948. Former Redskins coach Norv Turner used to run plays in certain games just so a defensive coordinator for an opponent a few weeks out had something to ponder. Gruden has a few tricks and decoys, too. It may take a half season to see most of what the Redskins’ offense has to offer. After all, Gruden is only showing as much as he needs to win.
Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said Monday afternoon that the team was still awaiting information on the extent of quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ left knee injury and would not commit to playing him Sunday against the visiting Vikings. Rodgers was carted off the field in the second quarter Sunday night against the Bears but returned after halftime and threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to lead a 24-23 comeback win after trailing 20-0. “I’m playing next week,” Rodgers told NBC after the game. But McCarthy said Monday no decision had been made. Rodgers, the two-time NFL MVP, was hurt after slipping to the turf during a sack. (AP)

TENNIS Since Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams in the U.S. Open women’s final Saturday, her accomplishment — along with her halting Japanese, her manners and her simple charm — has swelled national pride in Japan and eclipsed many questions about her mixed-race parentage in a famously insular country. On Monday, the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam event was still filling the front pages of the country’s three major daily newspapers and leading discussions on talk shows. While Williams’ penalties for rule violations during a chaotic final have dominated coverage in the United States, the topic has been largely brushed aside in Japan. The nation’s largest newspaper, Yomiuri, called Osaka a “new heroine that Japan is proud of” and characterized her appeal as “the contrast between her strength on the court and her innocent character off the court.” Yomiuri put a photo of Osaka holding the U.S. Open trophy atop its Monday front page — as did the two other large dailies. None of the main-line newspapers dwelled too much on her background, g , which has been well

reported. She was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and Haitian father, moved to the U.S. when she was 3 and now lives in Florida. In an interview Monday from New York on Japan’s TBS television, the 20-year-old was asked what she wants to do now. She replied in Japanese: “Have curried rice topped with a pork cutlet.” Then she slipped into English and said: “I am very honored. I don’t know how to say that in Japanese.” Osaka — who bowed and apologized after beating Williams — smiled through the media pressure, which several newspapers have called a Japanese trait. “She is shy and humble and that makes her look more like a Japanese,” Junko Okamoto, a
communications specialist, wrote in the magazine Toyo Keizai. Okamoto also said Osaka — who rose to a career-high No. 7 ranking Monday — could become a face of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, leading to lucrative sponsorship deals. Roland Kirishima, a JapaneseScottish photographer, criticized internet comments questioning if Osaka is really Japanese, because of her darker skin color. “I’m surprised many people in Japan are still obsessed with racial purity,” he tweeted. “It’s 21st century already. Please overcome this type of insular prejudice.” It looks like Japan has taken at least a first step. STEPHEN WADE

The Food and Drug Administration says vitamin patches are being falsely marketed as dietary supplements.
STUDIES SHOW ...
What’s the deal with full-fat dairy?
Do vitamin patches do anything?
Emerging research on full-fat dairy suggests that it might not be as unhealthy as feared. But when looking at associations between dairy fat and health, results are mixed, and the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee in 2015 called for more research on it. Here are three things to consider.
Experts: There is no evidence to support claims about transdermal supplements including acne, insomnia, poor focus, premenstrual syndrome, hangovers, weight gain, stress and more. The draw is that the patches provide a seemingly noninvasive “natural” quick fix: “Just apply a single patch and get instant and lasting results all night long,” says the marketing language that accompanies PatchMD’s “Menopause Night Relief” patch. PatchMD is also selling an autism “focus bundle.” Such claims may run afoul of the law. According to the FDA, a dietary supplement is a product that’s intended for ingestion (such as an oral multivitamin), meaning that transdermal patches technically cannot be labeled or marketed as supplements. And unlike with new drugs, the FDA does not test supplements (including their transdermal patch equivalent) before they enter the market. That means the FDA is often playing catch-up on claims made about “supplement” products. “FDA is aware that some transdermal vitamin patches are being falsely marketed as dietary supplements; the agency considers this action to be health fraud,” says Jeremy Kahn, an FDA spokesman. Although clinical trials are
Not all full-fat dairy is created equal. Yogurt with live cultures and natural cheese appear to have more benefits. Cheese is caloriedense, so be thoughtful about portions. Choosing highly flavorful varieties can often provide more satisfaction with less. GETTY IMAGS
WELLNESS Over the past decade, the “wellness” industry has exploded. The market, estimated at $3.7 trillion in 2015 by the Global Wellness Institute, generates so many products and programs that it’s difficult for consumer and health watchdogs to keep up. Among the increasingly popular offerings that have drawn skepticism are vitamin patches, which not only (ostensibly) provide users with an influx of nutrients but are marketed as a tool to kick-start a lifestyle makeover. Transdermal patches are adhesive devices that deliver a dose of medication — or, in the case of wellness products, vitamin and mineral “supplements” — to the bloodstream through the skin. The Food and Drug Administration approved the first medicinal transdermal patch for treating motion sickness in 1979 and, since then, smoking cessation patches, birth control patches and those treating dementia have found FDA-approved success. In recent years, though, nonmedicinal vitamin patches have flooded the market, with companies selling pricey cocktails of “supplements” that promise to help ease the effects of conditions
Real foods are best Experts say it’s important to avoid the mindset that a patch — or pill — will optimize health better than a well-rounded, healthy diet. “Vitamins and minerals eaten the way nature packaged it, in wholefood form … [have] been proven to be superior and provide tremendous health benefits,” says Taylor Johnson, a registered and licensed dietitian nutritionist based in D.C. S.B.

such as bariatric surgery patients who opt for patches without clinical testing to back them up. While data confirming the benefits of vitamin patches is sparse, companies rely heavily on social media testimony, anecdotal evidence and peer-to-peer referrals to fuel sales. “Buyer beware,” cautions JoAnn Manson, a physician and Harvard professor. “The evidence for nutrient absorption through the skin barrier is very limited, and many of the health-related claims are unsubstantiated. The companies need to provide proof for the claims.”

But the more you can understand of it, the more it can help you understand him and know what it ultimately means. So, what does he make of the forces that affected him then: Rebellion? Anger? Revenge? Weakness with peer pressure? Poor impulse control? Emptiness? A need for adrenaline? How did those forces shape him, and what remains of them now? What made him stop, and what did it all teach him? People and pasts can be messy and imperfect. But I’d argue that if he managed to make that mess into art, there is still hope for a big picture you can appreciate. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. The Lifetime thriller manages to be both riveting and unnerving TV REVIEW Lifetime, that saucy minx of a cable network, is never better than when it takes a step away from its unending supply of killerthriller-cheating-spouse movies for an actual dramatic series with longer story arcs and sharper moves — such as “UnReal” and
“Mary Kills People.” Now there’s “You,” an enjoyably unnerving 10-episode tale of meet-cute millennials whose flirty beginnings immediately devolve into one of those sickostalker stories we all know and love. There’s truly nothing new to report here as far as premises go, but “You” (which premiered Sunday) unfolds with the sort of momentum, chemistry and solid structure that other new TV shows would do well to study.

Penn Badgley’s Joe must be pretty bad at the “secret stalker” thing, if this picture is anything to go by.
Based on Caroline Kepnes’ novel and co-produced by Greg Berlanti (“Riverdale”), “You” stars Penn Badgley (“Gossip Girl”) as Joe Goldberg, a mild-mannered, seemingly
internet-averse manager of a Manhattan bookshop. When selfinterested MFA student Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) wanders in to browse the shelves, Joe is charming on the outside. On the

inside, the viewer is treated to his darker narration, an ongoing monologue addressed to Guinevere (or Beck, as she likes to be called). He sizes up Beck and, with the fuel efficiency that Lifetime viewers expect, wastes little time invading her privacy online. While “You” may come across as a big, fat cautionary tale to anyone who doesn’t have their online life locked down and secure, it also offers a covert and compelling study of modern dating. Take away the dead bodies and duct tape and notice how, despite the violent outcomes of Joe’s obsessions, this story is about two rather selfish people putting their own needs first. entertainment ‘We Fed an Island’ puts the response to Maria under the microscope BOOK REVIEW With “We Fed an Island,â€? chefand-restaurateur-turned-relief worker Jose Andres doesn’t just tell the story of how he and a fleet of volunteers cooked millions of meals for the Americans left adrift on Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. He exposes what he views as an outdated topdown, paramilitary-type model of disaster relief that proved
woefully ineffective. Andres also points plenty of fingers. At President Trump. At the Federal Emergency Management Agency. At the American Red Cross. At Puerto Rican politicians who let their own people down. No one is spared Andres’ critical eye, including himself. Co-written by veteran journalist Richard Wolffe, “We Fed an Island is as close to a page-turner as current-affairs nonfiction gets. There are good guys and bad guys. There are obstacles faced and overcome. There is an outrage on virtually every page.

Andres calls for a revolution in relief
Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen works to aid disaster-struck areas.
Andres is donating 100 percent of his net proceeds from “We Fed an Island, which comes out Tuesday, to World Central Kitchen. The funds will help his nonprofit continue its work to feed those who can’t feed themselves when disaster strikes. The money might even help keep a promise that Andres made to a 10-year-old volunteer named Lola. “I was so impressed with her, he writes in the book, “I promised I would pay for her college education. It’s a promise Andres says he won’t forget. TIM C ARMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll want to keep an accurate record today of all that transpires, especially when it comes to any exchange of funds. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your focus has been too much on money and not enough on other gains you can enjoy if you continue along a different but parallel course.

“I don’t read it because I just get really angry. It’s hard to fully avoid it, but I get a good laugh too.”
Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte and former Playboy model Kayla Rae Reid held their wedding Sunday in Palm Springs, Calif., according to People. The couple, who have a 1-year-old son named Caiden Zane, officially got married in a private civil ceremony in January. “No matter what has happened, Kayla’s been there to pick me up,” Lochte told People. “I owe everything to her.” Weddings guests were welcomed to the ceremony with shots of tequila, and Lochte gave his groomsmen gift boxes that included an engraved flask, wine opener, cigar and lighter.
