GOP Embraces Parts of Jobs Act The special election for ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner’s New York seat is Tuesday. “Jerry Springer Show” creator Bob Turner, a Republican, is running against Democrat David Weprin.

MWi^_d]jed The real takeaway from President Obama’s jobs agenda? Workers probably can count on continuing to pay lower Social Security taxes. Employers may not have to pay as much, either. The long-term unemployed probably will keep drawing jobless benefits. Congress can be expected to ratify new trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama. But don’t expect Congress to funnel tens of billions of dollars into rebuilding schools and blighted neighborhoods, or helping local governments pay teachers and firefighters, or setting up an “infrastructure bank” to leverage federal loans for roads, water systems and other public works projects. “Enough of the stimulus,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Friday on CNBC. “We can’t afford to keep spending money we don’t have.” Republicans who control the House quickly dismissed anything smacking of “stimulus” in Obama’s proposed American Jobs Act after his speech Thursday night. They embraced tax cuts for businesses,

Republicans appear open to extending 2011’s payroll tax cut
President Obama’s American Jobs Act, with it’s $447 billion price tag, focuses on extending this year’s Social Security payroll tax cut, which the Republicans appear ready to accept.
?dY[dj_l[ je Meha Je][j^[h House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said President Obama’s job proposals “merit consideration. ... We hope he gives serious consideration to our ideas as well,” Boehner said. “It’s my hope that we can work together.” But good intentions don’t enact laws. While the stagnant economy and restless voters are giving lawmakers lots of incentive to work together, there’s no sword hanging over them if they don’t act. (AP)

President Obama urged lawmakers to “pass this jobs plan right away.” But he left the responsibility for paying for the $447 billion American Jobs Act to a special bipartisan House-Senate panel created to reduce deficits by at least $1.2 trillion over the coming decade. The panel’s top Republican wasn’t happy about it. “It’s not the role of this committee to spend more money we don’t have on jobs we don’t get,” said Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas. The White House promised to send soon a list of ideas on how to pay for it all. (AP)
changes to unemployment insurance and promises to cut the red tape that delays construction projects. They appear poised to accept, albeit grudgingly, extending this year’s Social Security payroll tax cut for workers and including in it the Social Security taxes paid by employers. Last December, Congress passed a one-year cut in Social Security taxes, reducing the rate for workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent for 2011. Obama proposes to extend the tax cut for a year and make it bigger, reducing the Social Security taxes paid by workers to 3.1 percent. He’s also now proposing to extend the payroll tax cut to businesses on the first $5 million of their payroll, which would cost $240 billion. ANDREW TAYLOR (AP)

Unease, Confidence for 9/11 Travelers IWdjW 7dW" 9Wb_\$ Some travelers were plainly jittery about flying Sunday. Others weren’t worried, confident that security would be tight on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11. And some figured whatever happens, happens. In Los Angeles, Kim Pinney, who operates a daycare center in Virginia, booked the latest flight home possible from a friend’s wedding in the belief that that would minimize her chances of falling victim to a terrorist attack. “If something was going to happen, it would happen during the
day and then it would be over,” she said Saturday. Because her flight was at 11 p.m. Sunday, she added, “Technically, I’m flying for an hour on 9/11, because it will be 9/12” for most of the flight. John Hollenbeck, 49, of Canyon Lake, Calif., was scheduled to fly exactly 10 years ago, but his flight was canceled by the attacks. He was flying again Sunday, leaving out of John Wayne Orange County Airport. “I have no concerns over terrorism [in that] I have no concern that security’s inadequate,” he said. In Los Angeles, Mindy and Thomas Garrett of Arizona were flying with their two children to San Diego. “It just worked out to be the best date. I mean, if someone’s going to blow me up .... ” Thomas Garrett said with a shrug. (AP)
:_ihkfj_edi On Sunday, authorities and travelers were clearly on edge:

Two fighter planes escorted a New York-bound American Airlines jet after three passengers locked themselves in a bathroom during the flight from Los Angeles. A man was detained at the Kansas City, Mo., airport and a terminal was shut down after authorities found suspicious items in his carry-on bag. Authorities said the items tested negative for explosive materials. Police at Detroit’s Metro Airport took three passengers into custody after the crew reported that two people were spending a long time inside a bathroom on the plane during the flight. (AP)

The surprise assault on Israel’s embassy in Cairo has pushed Egypt’s ruling military deeper into confrontation with a protest movement openly accusing the country’s caretakers of trying to cling to the legacy of Hosni Mubarak rather than dismantle it. A potentially destabilizing showdown between the two rivals now seems increasingly likely. Israel, not surprisingly, saw the rioting and break-in by protesters in the context of its peace deal with Egypt. It seemed an ominous sign of Egyptians’ hatred of Israel unleashed. But Egypt’s generals were just as much the target of the protesters. The scene was a message to the military that while it may rule, it can’t carry the power by intimidation that Mubarak did. Protesters, and a growing part of the public, are becoming increasingly critical of a military they say is too close

MehbZ Jh_feb_" B_XoW Fierce resistance by Moammar Gadhafi loyalists entrenched in two strongholds has stalled the rebels’ final push for complete control over Libya. Three weeks after the fall of Tripoli appeared to herald the end of Libya’s civil war, the protracted battle over the loyalist bastions of Bani Walid and Sirte, Gadhafi’s hometown, has dashed hopes of a speedy “declaration of liberation” that would start the clock ticking on a transition to democracy. — with two envoys from the negotiation team killed Sunday. However, the former rebels may have underestimated the continued support for Gadhafi in Bani Walid and the other strongholds. Arguments among anti-Gadhafi fighters have complicated the assault, especially in Bani Walid, and die-hard Gadhafi loyalists who withdrew to the remaining bastions have been digging in. A continued delay in capturing the remaining strongholds is raising questions about the ability of Libya’s new leaders to take charge. A standoff over Sirte and Bani Walid could also have far-reaching political implications. (AP)

Attack Highlights Taliban Fury Afghan blast ahead of Sept. 11 stresses radicals’ persistence AWXkb" 7\]^Wd_ijWd A powerful Taliban truck bomb that wounded 77 American soldiers and killed five Afghans outside a combat outpost served as a reminder on Sunday that 10 years after the Sept. 11 attacks, nearly 100,000 U.S. troops are still fighting a war that shows no signs of slowing down. No U.S. troops were killed when the massive bomb loaded on a truck
filled with firewood exploded Saturday night just outside the gates of Combat Outpost Sayed Abad in eastern Wardak province, about 40 miles from Kabul. Officials said that 17 Afghans were wounded by the blast, which also damaged about 100 shops in a nearby bazaar. Although Saturday’s bombing occurred outside the base, the numbers of injuries it caused was significant. Combat outposts usually house about 200 troops. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Earlier, they had issued a statement vowing to fight until all foreign troops leave.
The radical Islamic movement also stressed that it had no role in the Sept. 11 attacks, and it accused the U.S. of using them as a pretext to invade the country. “The Afghans have an endless stamina for a long war,” the statement said. The U.S. has begun withdrawing some of its 100,000 troops from Afghanistan and will send home 33,000 by the end of next year. The international military coalition has already begun transferring security responsibilities to newly trained Afghan forces with the aim of removing all their soldiers by the end of 2014. (AP)
C[Wdm^_b[ $$$ On Saturday, 10 Afghan civilians were killed in two separate roadside bombings, officials said. Two Afghan security guards were also killed late Saturday when an insurgent rocket hit Bagram air field outside Kabul, the U.S. military said, wounding two NATO service members and two Afghans. NATO also said Sunday that one of its service members was killed in an insurgent attack Saturday in eastern Afghanistan. That brought the death toll to 13 this month — and 417 this year — for coalition forces. (AP)

The reconstruction of Columbus Plaza, in front of Union Station, left, is projected to cost $7.8 million, DDOT officials said.
FbWpW I[j \eh H[Xk_bZ_d] Union Station work will affect bus stops, pedestrian crossings MWi^_d]jed The District Department of Transportation is about to launch an 18-month reconstruction of Columbus Plaza and Massachusetts Avenue in front of Union Station. Aside from its downtrodden appearance compared to the magnificent train station, the plaza is confusing for the thousands of pedestrians and motorists who use it each day. As part of the $7.8 million project, DDOT said, the plaza will be reconfigured to improve access and safety. The new traffic pattern will allow vehicles to loop around the plaza as they enter and exit Union Station. Vehicles will no longer need to travel through the middle of it to leave the station. New sidewalks will be added to create safer passages for pedestrians, and upgrades to the traffic signals should improve the flow of
pedestrians and vehicles throughout the plaza, DDOT said. As a security measure, a bollard barrier system will also be installed along the perimeter of the station. The project, which has been discussed and planned for years, is scheduled to begin Monday.
D[m i_Z[mWbai m_bb X[ WZZ[Z je Yh[Wj[ iW\[h fWiiW][i \eh f[Z[ijh_Wdi$ One of the complicating factors about any initiative at Union Station is the number of agencies and interests involved in planning for this D.C. transportation hub. The construction project will be managed by DDOT, but the D.C. agency noted that it’s in a partnership that includes Amtrak, the Architect of the Capitol, the National Park Service, the Union Station Redevelopment Corp. and Metro. Thomas Luebke, secretary of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts,
which is another of the interested parties, said the idea is to have the space in front of the station “be more about a plaza and less about trying to walk across nine lines of vehicle traffic.” During construction, the bus, car and taxi drop-off lanes in front of the station will remain open. Traffic lanes on Massachusetts Avenue and around the plaza will be reduced as necessary, DDOT said. Temporary walkways and crossings will be marked. While work on the plaza doesn’t involve the parts of the station where Amtrak, MARC, VRE and Metro operate, DDOT is advising train riders to allow for some additional time in getting into the station. Some Metrobus and D.C. Circulator stops right around the work zone will be temporarily disrupted during the project. Also this fall, the Union Station Redevelopment Corp. will be working on collecting most of the intercity buses serving D.C. into a new bus hub in the station’s garage. (THE WASHINGTON POST )
:_]_jWb :[bWo0 A program that was supposed to make it easier for D.C. stu-
dents to ride Metro with an electronic pass probably won’t be up and running until later this year, District and Metro officials said last week. The District Department of Transportation launched an effort this summer to allow students to use the D.C. One Card — which they already used to access recreation centers and libraries — as a farecard on Metro’s transit system. (T WP)

Regulators to Examine Va. Electricity Rates Over the next two weeks state regulators will hold hearings to examine what it costs to keep the lights on in Virginia homes and businesses. Regulators are looking at how much the state’s two largest utilities charge under a 2007 law requiring base rate reviews every two years. Rex Grossman celebrated his first touchdown pass with a giddy backward trot toward the sideline, then turned around and kept running for another 20 yards or more along the Redskins’ bench. He didn’t have to mope over any interceptions. There was more Good Rex than Bad Rex in his first Week 1 start since 2007. Grossman completed 21 of 34 passes for 305 yards Sunday with two touchdowns, no interceptions and one lost fumble — mostly avoiding the type of negative play that has so often defined his career — as the Redskins opened the season with a 28-14 win over the New York Giants. Grossman’s performance, at least for a week, justifies coach Mike Shanahan’s decision in a quarterback competition against John Beck that lasted the entire preseason. After an 0-for-4 start, Grossman started spreading the ball around against a short-handed Giants defense. Anthony Armstrong had one touchdown reception and set up another with a diving catch at the 1-yard line. Fred Davis had a career-high 105 yards on five catches. The Redskins ended a six-game losing streak against the Giants, beating their NFC East nemesis at home for the first time since 2005. The score was tied at 14 at halftime,

second quarter, Shanahan dialed up a nice underneath play to Santana Moss to convert on a drive that eventually tied up the game. WORST CALL: Up only one TD in the fourth quarter, untested rookie Roy Helu came in for a carry, a risky maneuver in a close game. BEST ADJUSTMENT: In the second half, the defensive pressure went to another level, forcing Eli Manning into a lot of quick decisions and frustration.

A stadium of burgundy and gold became red, white and blue — in color and in spirit — during pregame ceremonies for the game featuring the cities hit by the terrorists attacks 10 years ago. Chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” greeted former secretary of state Colin Powell as he walked onto the field to perform the coin toss, and the fans — most holding miniature American flags — chanted again after a national anthem during which players from both teams held an enormous version of the Stars and Stripes that covered the entire field. but Washington first-round pick Ryan Kerrigan swung the momentum early in the third quarter when he batted Eli Manning’s pass into the air, caught it, returned it nine yards and found himself jumping up and down over a go-ahead touchdown in his NFL debut. Manning completed 18 of 32 passes for 268 yards and was sacked four times by a Redskins defense that ranked 31st in the league last year but has been retooled around former Giants defensive tackle Barry Cofield. Grossman was far from perfect. There were a couple of near-interceptions, and his fumble on a sack near midfield with the score 21-14 gave the Giants an opening to tie the game. But New York’s drive stalled, and Washington blocked a 38-yard field goal attempt with 10:57 remaining. Grossman then took the Redskins 70 yards, capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jabar Gaffney that provided a two-touchdown cushion with 5:04 to play. (AP)

Stephen Strasburg allowed one run over three innings in his second start back from Tommy John surgery, and the Nationals hit three consecutive home runs in an 8-2 win against the Houston Astros on Sunday. Strasburg didn’t display the same efficiency he did in his return Tuesday. The right-hander needed 31 pitches to get out of the first inning, although he settled dow n and finished with six straight outs. He allowed three hits and struck out four in his 57-pitch outing. Ian Desmond, Rick Ankiel and Ryan Zimmerman all went deep off Houston starter Henry Sosa (2-4) to start the Nationals’ third inning. The Astros (49-97) tied the franchise mark for most losses in a season. They have lost 97 games three times, most recently in 1991. To mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Washington wore special blue jerseys with a stars-and-stripes background for the team’s “W” logo.

Strasburg’s pitch count was almost exactly the same as it was in his first start back, when he threw 56 pitches over five scoreless innings and struck out four against the Dodgers. It was clear from the start Sunday he wasn’t going to cruise through the Astros’ lineup the same way — he needed nine pitches to strike out leadoff batter Jordan Schafer. And Strasburg went to a full count on the first three batters, although he struck out two of them. (AP)

As the amber sun faded from the sky, Elements of Life’s “Into My Life (You Brought the Sunshine)” rose from the speakers on the rooftop of the Liaison Capitol Hill, where DJ Adrian Loving holds a steady gig on Thursday nights. An artsy crowd trickled into the downtown D.C. hotel, most making a beeline for the bar. Sisters Goldie Deane and Ayana Patrick, however, grabbed a couple of cabana chairs near Loving’s station. “We started following him on Facebook, after we heard him spin an ode to soul,” explained Deane, director of an arts nonprofit in the District. “There are about a half dozen DJs whose events we look out for, and he’s one.” The poolside party is part of Loving’s rotation of gigs that can include everything from swank clubs to exhibition launches. This, he said, is what it means to be a DJ in Washington, a place with a diverse range of clients who keep demand beating at a steady rhythm, at CONTINUED ON E3

How else do you keep things fresh?
A THEATER MAJOR in college, Mike Premo had aspirations of being an actor, but when he applied for a job as an agent for a local airline, he shifted his career path into business. Rising quickly through the ranks, he soon found himself leading a travel management company and speaking at various industry events. What bearing does your theater background have on your leadership style?
My team is generally going to get a little bit
Anyone who’s run a long-term theatrical production on Broadway can tell you that the most difficult part is keeping things fresh for the actors and the audience. I’ve done things like rewrite songs with company-focused lyrics and performed them at meetings. Also, one of the first things I did as a chief executive was take the executive team to a local coffee shop for our first staff meeting to find a way to say, “Things are different now. We need to think differently, act differently. I’m going to put you
in a different environment.” They thought it was great. How do you typically prepare for a role?
One thing actors do is physicalize the character. My senior year in college, I had a part in a Shakespeare production. It was kind of a bird-like character. It had cocky, strutting aspects to it. I actually started walking like
a bird to prepare for the role. We all play a bit of a character in our work lives. Visualizing your success ahead of time is as important in real life as it is in the theatrical life. Usually, visualization is part of my outlining process when drafting comments or presentations. I think about who will be in the audience. How can I get my most important message points through to them? But I think that also extends to general business success — what do we want to feel and look back upon at the end of this year? How will we actually achieve that? Are we really acting today like that is the outcome we’re going to get? VANESSA SMALL (CAPITAL BUSINESS)

][jj_d]W^[WZ Turn the Tables least enough to make a living. Loving, who also teaches graphic design and runs the art gallery Dissident Display, estimates he earned roughly $50,000 playing events around town last year. On average, DJs who play weddings and corporate events, so-called mobile DJs, earn $600 to $900, on average, for a four-hour gig, according to the National Association of Mobile Entertainers. Nightclub DJs, on the other hand, take in anywhere from $25 to $5,000 per hour, depending on their recognition. Business has grown in the D.C. region, where an increase in venues and an influx of young professionals have created a thriving scene. To make it to the top strata of the industry, however, DJs still have to leave the market, local experts say. “As good as the scene has gotten, there is still a brain drain for the more internationally aspiring DJs,” said Arash Shirazi, co-founder of Georgetown-based Bullitt Bookings, a DJ agency. “It’s really hard to grow to a global scale here, but you certainly can make a living.” To Shirazi, there are three kinds of area DJs: “A-list,” those who produce and spin music to international acclaim; “reliable locals,” with a strong hometown following and client base; and “special events,” the go-to guys for store openings and other corporate events. Washington, he said, has produced talent in all of those categories, though the city is rarely mentioned alongside major industry hubs, like New York or London. Shirazi’s brother, Ali Shirazinia, better known as Dubfire of the Grammy-winning duo Deep Dish, credits the city, in part, for his electronica success. He made a name playing the club scene in D.C. in the 1990s and producing remixes for the likes of Janet Jackson, Madonna and the Rolling Stones. “Being outside of New York, London or Chicago helped define my sound in terms of it being a bit unique,” Shirazinia said. “Few people were doing electronic music back then.”

Adrian Loving estimates he earned $50, 000 last year playing events in the District.
The best part of your day starts in the evening.
These days, Shirazinia spends about 250 days a year on the road, performing 130 shows in 2010 alone. He would not share how lucrative those gigs are, but he wagered that A-list DJs, a group he considers himself to be a part of, take in anywhere from $3 million to $5 million per year. With the promise of that kind of paycheck, it’s no wonder enrollment is steady at Beat Refinery, a DJ academy with locations in Bethesda and Herndon, Va. The school, launched in May 2010, currently has 35 students registered for courses on mixing, scratching and producing, rang-
ing from $175 to $480. “We’ve already bred 10 DJs that are working full time,” said Chris Stiles (DJ Stylus Chris), who founded the school along with Brian Sadiarin (DJ Geometrix). “We want to keep the art of the DJ alive through the school.” And what better market than one with, as he said, “so many avenues to get gigs, whether it’s a bar, bigtime nightclub or a corporate event at Nine West in Tysons Corner”? M>7J I>; :E;I0 Zamanzada starts each day by making sure her seven drivers have their schedules and are ready to chauffeur customers around the metropolitan area to airports, day camps and parties in the company’s 10 hybrid vehicles. Then she meets with various departments, helping train a new IT worker or reviewing emissions stats with her research and development guy, for instance. “You definitely have to be a jack-ofall-trades when you have your own business, because you never know where you’re going to be needed,” Zamanzada says. The Afghanistan native founded Green Route in 2009 to help working parents get their kids to soccer, ballet or home while they had to be at the office. “You’re not just going to put your kid in a taxicab,” Zamanzada says.
She started with five kids and two drivers. “The parents were happy,” she says — so happy, in fact, they started recommending Green Route to co-workers. Now Zamanzada has eight employees — plus the drivers — and a new set of clients: corporate customers. Each week, about 75 commuters pay per ride (about $50 to an airport), and 55 subscribe monthly ($36 for 10 hours of ride time). MEKB: OEK M7DJ J>?I @E85 Because the company
provides rides 24 hours a day, Zamanzada is always on call. “You have to make sure you’re always there in case the website goes down or somebody’s credit card is being denied,” she says. “There are times when you want to say, ‘You know what? I just want to give it up and go get a job in the corporate world and not worry about everybody and anybody’s issues,’” she says. “But at the end of the day when you see that you’re helping out a family and it’s really making a difference and you’re being green, you think, ‘I’m definitely leaving an imprint in this world.’” Being a people person also helps. Between her staff and customers, Zamanzada encounters all kinds of personalities. “You have to be a rounded

She also used lessons she learned while working for almost a year at Project Nur, a student initiative of the American Islamic Congress. There she gained experience with communications and garnering donors, which helped her get investors for Green Route.

It’s been said that effective development rarely occurs in isolation. Rather, professional growth and behavioral change often result from seeing yourself in a clearer view, after getting valuable input from others. Now you just need to go about soliciting honest feedback. Those of you comic book fans (or recent moviegoers) will appreciate that trusty sidekick Kato was always looking out for, and providing input to, the Green Hornet. In the real world, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer transitioned from an overbearing “quant jock” in applied math and economics to a charismatic leader, thanks to his willingness to stand up and hear feedback from Bill Gates and close friends and employees. Even Oprah Winfrey has been known to turn to her best friend, Gayle King (editor-atlarge for O, the Oprah Magazine), for candid feedback and insight. So who among your peers or colleagues can you turn to for help recognizing your sharp edges or annoying habits so you can attain
a higher level of self-awareness and career success? As an executive coach, I encourage clients to seek out learning partners (or confidants) who can provide them with real-time, immediate feedback. Learning partners also provide a formal relationship structure to help individuals practice new skills, stay motivated, actively remain focused on specific goals and persist when the going gets rough. Through their support and monitoring, learning partners also serve as a great source of accountability to ensure that your desired behaviors are put into play and that you remain on the right track. You can ask a mentor, colleague or friend to serve as a learning partner. Approach the relationship as something that is mutually beneficial — you can offer each other much-needed feedback and advice. Make sure you enlist the right learning partner for a successful relationship. Here are some of the attributes of the ideal learning partner: >ED;IJ 7D: :?H;9J0 It won’t do you much good if your learning partner is going to sugarcoat everything. You need someone who is not shy about calling out counterproductive behaviors and can

Identify them before you approach a potential learning partner. This will also help you figure out the best partner matches. Once you’ve established a learning partner relationship, it’s good to set benchmarks to measure your progress. Plan to check in regularly with your partner, whether in person, or by phone or email. And if you have a big presentation, a job interview or an important first meeting, rely on your learning partner to help you feel prepared with a mock interview or even a quick pep talk.
According to leadership expert Ken Blanchard, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” So what are you waiting for? Reach for a big spoon and take advantage of what a learning partner can offer. JEFFREY KUDISCH

J_Ya[j je j^[ Jef Getting into an MBA program can be hard but very rewarding 7YY[ii What would you do to improve your shot at the MBA program of your dreams? Start a small business? Or a nonprofit group, perhaps? Travel the world to bulk up your personal narrative? Maybe even drop $10,000 on a prep course? If you’re aiming for the Stanford Graduate School of Business, you may well be tempted to do all of the above. “From t he classmate who climbed Mount Everest to the one who started a microfinance organization for individual entrepreneurs, these are the people who are your classmates and will ultimately become your friends — for life,” says a prerecorded message from Stefan, a Stanford MBA student from Belgium who keeps you company while you’re on hold with the admissions office. If you’re not like Stefan and didn’t grow up in Hong Kong, study in Britain and work on four continents before applying for an MBA, you might feel, well, ordinary. And out of luck. Which is why a growing number of prospective MBAs map out a win-at-all-costs strategy one, two or three years before applying. They are, after all, trying to stand
out among nearly 200,000 MBA applicants across the nation. “I wanted to show I could bring more to the school,” said Radha Rai, who started a company that develops smartphone apps for the GMAT, a bear of a test that’s the first hurdle for MBA hopefuls. “I show it from my start-up because in my regular job you don’t get oppor-

tunity for taking risk.” The bet paid off: The 28-yearold Indian IT professional was accepted to the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, despite scoring below the school’s average on the GMAT. Of 4,299 applicants to Booth’s full-time MBA program in 2010, 22 percent were accepted, according to the school. The full cost is about $85,000 per year, not including forgone wages. A full-time MBA program typically takes two years. Experts say the sacrifice is well worth it. Attending a top-ranked MBA program, such as one in the top 15 of Bloomberg Businessweek’s survey, can pay off hand-
somely over a career. “It’s the promise of the golden ticket,” says Shawn Berry, president of PerfectGMAT, a test-prep company. To help candidates get into those top schools — which include Stanford, Booth, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Harvard, Northwestern’s Kellogg School and Duke — Berry promises to maximize their GMAT scores — for a modest fee. “My GM AT ser v ice cost s $10,000, and it long has,” he says, “and it’s well worth it.” Indeed, a study commissioned by Bloomberg Businessweek found that graduates from the top MBA programs make about $1 million more over the course of their careers than those from lesserranked programs. Berry’s pitch has a very basic appeal. An MBA, he says, is an “opportunity for access” to top-paying jobs. It’s a degree, he says, that largely caters to “people who want to succeed and go to Wall Street and make a lot of money.” It’s a small wonder, then, that GMAT tutors such as Berry can charge $10,000 a pop to help applicants land at a school like Wharton or Harvard, schools that regularly attract 7,000 or more applicants and admit fewer than 20 percent. With dozens of clients each year, Berry said, “I’m as busy as I can be.” CEZ ARY PODKUL (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Keep Summer Alive For comic Kevin Hart, who stars in his own It wasn’t supposed to be like this. concert film, laughter Autumn is D.C.’s summer — that’s our reward for surviving the humidity and cures all of his pain
show; he also hosted this year’s BET Awards. Hart’s profile has also risen, thanks to a string of standup TV specials and commercial work for Ford and Nike. With his new movie, Hart becomes the first black comedian to have his stand-up performance showcased in movie theaters since Martin Lawrence’s 2002 concert film, “Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat.” Hart joins an elite list of black comedians who have had their stand-up acts shown on the big screen, including Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Lawrence and the four comedians of the 2000 stand-up film “The Original Kings of Comedy.” Some consider the 33-year-old Hart to be one of today’s kings of comedy. “He is willing to share his life and experiences,” says Steve Harvey, one of the “Original Kings.” “He’s probably doing it better than anyone else right now.”

For short-statured comedian Kevin Hart, the chicken came first when, at the start of his career, an audience member threw a chicken wing at his face after a bad joke.
( gion )C
Kevin Hart remembers when he took the stage early in his career and told a joke so bad an audience member tossed a Buffalostyle chicken wing at him, slapping him on the cheek. “It hit me right here, with the sauce dripping from my face,” says the comedian, poking his cheek. “It was the worst. I wanted to step to the guy who threw it, but he was too big. ... So, I wiped the chicken sauce off and tried to finish.” That embarrassing moment might have forced any other amateur comedian into an early retirement, but Hart has found a way to craft his comedy act around his most shameful situations, turning them into a kind of therapy. “That’s my drug, to go onstage and show people what I’m going through,” says Hart, whose first stand-up comedy movie, “Laugh at My Pain,” opened in 100 AMC theaters in the U.S. last week. Hart’s “therapy” has made him one of the most in-demand comedians in the business right now. He’s coming off a well-received appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards, where he delivered the opening monologue and starred in vignettes during the

In “Laugh at My Pain,” co-directed by comedian Kevin Hart and filmed during his 90-city tour earlier this year, Hart openly talks about his father’s drug addiction, takes a jab at his 5-foot-5-inch height and discusses his legal separation from his wife, comedian Torre Hart. The movie also includes a touching moment when Hart visits his Philadelphia hometown and holds a family gathering, tearing up while giving thanks to his family for supporting him after his mother died from cancer in 2007. “Those moments were tough,” he said. “But you got to take your lumps. You don’t have a success story without them.” (AP)

the mosquitoes! Long, perfect autumns full of sun and pumpkin beer! But, no, it’s raining. I want a refund. I want my summer back. There’s only one thing to do: Cling to the vestiges of summer for as long as possible. And since paddleboats and bike tours are out 8o <_edW of the question when PkXb_d the weather blows, it looks like our best option is Tiki Tuesdays. Tiki cocktails were a trend in America for decades after Prohibition, but they fell out of favor in the modern era until chic cocktail bars realized that tropical rum drinks were really, really fun to make and drink. Tiki Tuesdays at the Passenger (1021 7th St. NW) last all evening (5 p.m.1:30 a.m.) and feature a rotating menu of summery cocktails in flavors such as coconut and pineapple. Normally, we wouldn’t describe the Passenger as “summery” — it’s a dark little bar, despite the big skylight — but roof decks are so depressing when it’s drizzling. The campiness comes and goes: There are plastic leis on hand, but you won’t see bartenders wearing Hawaiian shirts. Want your drink served in a hollowed-out pineapple? Bartender Amy Russell can do that for you for an extra $5. Now if there were a pig roasting on a spit, we’d have ourselves a luau. Or we can fall back on $30 scorpion bowls (i.e. huge containers of alcohol), which are meant to be shared with your friends.

The Japandroids do a lot with a little — drums, guitar, two voices — and manage to make a whole rock band out of just two Canadians and a little bit of ambition. The only problem could come if someone makes a documentary about them and there’s no lead singer to have a meltdown and leave the band. In his new memoir, Roger Ebert tells an episodic tale with a big cast of characters 8eeai A gentle look back, “Life Itself: A Memoir” is as moving as it is amusing, fresh evidence that Roger Ebert is a writer who happens to love movies, not a movie lover who happens to write. It’s an episodic tale with a huge cast of characters, kind of like a Robert Altman movie with Ebert at the center, and sometimes on the edges, but taking it all in. He balances Everyman tales of growing up in postwar Middle America with moments from a singular life. An only child in a workingclass Catholic home in Urbana, Ill., Ebert began writing as a kid. He was a teenage reporter, a college journalist and then a local

Eight years later, he was the first film writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. Ebert and critic Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune turned their love-hate relationship into gold with their TV shows critiquing films. The relationship with Siskel may be the most complicated of his life. Ebert maintains that the hate was meaningless and the
love deep. A cold shadow falls across the warm memories, cast by the illness that in 2006 robbed him of his voice and his ability to eat and drink. It appears not as rage against fate but as a shrugging acceptance of what is and a mild lament over what can never be again. A realist wrapped inside a romantic, Ebert doesn’t need a George Bailey moment to know that, all in all, it’s been a wonderful life. DOUGL ASS K. DANIEL (AP)

C[h[Z_j^ CWppejjW" @[\\ I^emWbj[h Jeff, 34, is an Army officer and a psychologist. Meredith, 32, is a senior communications specialist. They live in Silver Spring. THE MAIN EVENT: Sept. 16, on the shores of Lake Tahoe (the Nevada side). Father Miles Riley O’Brien, a Catholic priest who had a radio show in the Bay Area, will officiate. HOW THEY MET: OKCupid.com. Jeff joked in his profile that he “owned a cat farm.” “I couldn’t help but ask if that was true,” says Meredith, a non-cat fancier. “Thank God it wasn’t!” FIRST DATE: BlackFinn in D.C. “We shared sliders, a quesadilla, some brewskis and lots of laughs,” Meredith says. FIRST KISS: “I planted one on him when we said goodbye after our first date — I had to see if he could pass the smooch test. He aced it.” HOW HE PROPOSED: During a vacation in Jamaica. “I directed her toward a rock pier that extended out into the ocean. Under a palm tree and a sky alight by a full moon and hundreds of stars, I asked her to spend the rest of her life with me.”
=h[] >Wcc[jj" C[] MeebZh_Z][ Greg, 26, is a consultant. Meg, 31, is a technical writer. They live in Arlington. THE MAIN EVENT: Sept. 24 at a manor in Leesburg, Va., with 230 guests in attendance. HOW THEY MET: As volunteer counselors at a summer camp for children who are burn survivors. Because of the five-year age gap, they spent four years “crushing very hard” on each other, assuming the other wasn’t interested, Meg says. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Meg’s dad had volunteered at the camp when he was younger and had been Greg’s counselor. So Greg’s first impression was “Wow, Bob’s daughter is pretty hot!”

PET NAMES: When Greg’s roommates learned Meg’s full name is Margaret, they “wanted to see if she was cool enough to accept a funny nickname, so they started calling her Midge.” It stuck.
