A show of political theater THEATER During the tumultuous 2016 presidential campaign and its aftermath, Broadway producer Fran Kirmser watched with confusion and dismay as the country grew more polarized by the day. Like many Americans, she flipped on the television. But instead of MSNBC or Fox or CNN, she turned to the channel that has achieved cult status among policy geeks: C-SPAN. “Even though sometimes it’s very slow and sometimes the audio isn’t so great ‌ I found it quite riveting,â€? said Kirmser, whose accolades include Tony Awards for productions of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?â€? and for the musical “Hair.â€? “It helped me understand our government.â€? It was there — after watching hours of speeches and congressional hearings — that Kirmser found unexpected inspiration for her next production. Kirmser has created a series of productions called “American Scorecard,â€? dramatic readings

She said she hopes the productions can educate and inspire audiences of all political stripes, delivering information that is stripped of punditry and selective editing (though the hearings are edited for time). The D.C. Board of Elections ordered council candidate S. Kathryn Allen off the November ballot, citing evidence of widespread forgeries and other fraud in her qualifying petitions. Late Monday, election officials upheld a request by D.C. Council Member Elissa Silverman, I-At Large, to disqualify hundreds of signatures submitted on behalf of Allen, after three circulators listed on Allen’s petitions said their names were forged. Officials also disqualified some signatures collected by Allen’s campaign manager that appeared to be copied from petition sheets for another candidate. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Authorities said Tuesday they have arrested and charged a 34-year-old man in connection with several incidents involving tampering with fire hydrants. The incidents happened over the past few days, involved 20 hydrants and posed a safety risk, according to D.C. Water. D.C. police said they arrested and charged Neema Kordestani of Danville, Calif. He faces charges of water violation and other offenses. According to a police report, he was seen Monday evening opening a hydrant in Northeast. D.C. Water spokesman Vincent Morris said officials did not know the motive behind the tampering. (TWP)

Detectives asserted that Divband first injured Millie in April 2016 but didn’t tell the girl’s parents. They said he inflicted fatal injuries on April 19 of that year. Prosecutors drew attention to search phrases found on Divband’s computer and phone, such as “Broken Bones in Children.” (TWP)

Defense casts blame on brothers of accused THE DISTRICT Attorneys for the Maryland man charged in the 2015 slayings of three members of a Northwest Washington family and their housekeeper said their client was not involved in the killings and, in an unexpected twist, told a jury that the man’s two brothers orchestrated and carried out the murders. Jeffrey Stein, with the District’s Public Defender Service, said in court that his client, 36-year-old Daron Wint, was set up by his brothers, who “deceived him, abandoned him and left him to take the fall” in a robbery that turned deadly.

Meet top grad schools

The stunning allegation came in the opening statements Tuesday in the trial for Wint, the only person Daron Wint arrested in the May 2015 killings of businessman Savvas Savopoulos, 46; his wife, Amy Savopoulos, 47; their son, Philip, 10; and the family’s housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa, 57. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Bruckmann put the blame solely on Wint, telling jurors that all evidence pointed to the Lanham, Md., man who once worked for a Savopoulos family business. Prosecutors allege that Wint

held the victims hostage inside the Savopoulos home in May 2015, beating, strangling and stabbing them before setting the house ablaze and fleeing with $40,000 in ransom. The men named by the defense as alternative suspects, Wint’s brother Darrell and half brother Steffon, could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday. They have not been charged. Wint’s trial is expected to last about eight weeks. He is facing multiple counts of firstdegree murder, kidnapping a nd other cha rges. KEITH L. The Justice Department prosecuted only a dozen cases of illegal gun purchases in fiscal 2017.

JOE DAVIDSON | THE WASHINGTON POST

‘Shocking’ report: Few penalized for lying to buy a gun If you lied to try to buy a firearm, fear not the feds. Your chances of being prosecuted by the Justice Department for falsifying information to buy a gun are almost zero. Reviews by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in fiscal 2017 led to 112,000 gun purchase denials because individuals were in forbidden categories, according to a new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigated 12,700 of those cases. How many of the investigated cases resulted in prosecutions? Twelve. That’s 0.09 percent of the cases ATF investigated.

That means the crooks, the wife beaters and the homicidal maniacs who lie to get a gun have little reason to worry that Uncle Sam with get them for faking on Form 4473. It lists nine questions designed to cull those who should not be strapped. The questions include: “Have you ever been convicted in any court of a felony?”; “Are you a fugitive from justice?”; and “Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective?” That raises this question from Avery Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence: “If it’s official DOJ policy to enforce existing gun laws, why isn’t the government following its own policy?” Pennsylvania, by comparison, makes Uncle Sam look like a real slacker. While the Justice Department

prosecuted only a dozen cases, Pennsylvania won 472 convictions — not just prosecutions — during fiscal 2017. “In 2014, the state changed its policy to investigate all firearms denials,” GAO explained. Attorney General Jeff Sessions tried to boost prosecutions with a memo to local U.S. attorneys in March. He told federal prosecutors “to enhance prosecution of cases involving false statements on ATF Form 4473,” which he called “lie-and-try” cases. Lying on the form is a felony that can bring up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. But DOJ’s deeds fall far short of Sessions’ declarations. ATF blamed the almost invisible federal prosecution rate on the number of denial cases that more than doubled from fiscal 2011 to 2017 and the time-intensive nature of the investigations. GAO’s report said U.S. attorneys “generally do not accept and prosecute denial cases that do not involve aggravating circumstances, as these cases can require significant effort for prosecutors relative to the short length of punishment and may offer little value to public safety because the offender does not obtain the firearm, compared to other cases involving gun violence.” As the number of denial cases multiplied, investigators did not. GAO said, “ATF data show that special agent staffing across … six selected field divisions collectively only increased by one special agent from fiscal years 2011 through 2017.” The Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment. Calling the lack of prosecutions “shocking,” Gardiner said she agrees with Sessions that existing federal gun laws should be enforced. She added, “But his Department of Justice is not doing that.” Follow Joe Davidson on Twitter @joedavidsonWP

more. Let’s not trivialize them.” There have long been efforts to separate the solemn anniversary from political campaigns. The group 9/11 Day, which promotes volunteering on the anniversary, asks candidates not to campaign or run political ads for the day. Organizers of the ground zero ceremony let politicians attend, but they’ve been barred since 2011 from reading names or delivering remarks. JENNIFER PELTZ

POLITICS Donald Trump Jr. acknowledged Tuesday that his father can trust fewer people around him than he would like in the wake of an anonymous op-ed claiming there is a “resistance” within the Trump administration. “I think there are people in there that he can trust, it’s just — it’s a much smaller group than I would like it to be,” the president’s eldest son said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Asked whom he trusts, Trump Jr. declined to answer but suggested that family members working in the White House remain in the fold. President Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are both White House advisers. “I’m talking outside family. That goes without saying,” Trump Jr. said. “It would be easier to get things done if you’re able to fully trust everyone around you. I think that’s a shame.” The op-ed, published by The New York Times last week, was written by a senior official in the Trump administration, according to the Times. It depicts a “twotrack presidency” in which Trump acts according to his own whims while many of his top aides, in the author’s words, work to thwart his “more misguided impulses.” Trump Jr. said he believes the op-ed was written by a “low-level person,” and he urged the Justice Department to investigate the author, as his father has suggested. MEMORIALS Americans looked back on 9/11 on Tuesday with tears and somber tributes. Victims’ relatives said prayers for their country, pleaded for national unity and pressed officials not to use the 2001 terrorist attacks as a political tool in a polarized nation. Seventeen years after losing her husband, Margie Miller came from her suburban home to join thousands of relatives, survivors, rescuers and others on a misty morning at the memorial plaza in New York City where the World Trade Center’s twin towers once stood. “To me, he is here. This is my holy place,” she said before the reading of the names of her husband, Joel Miller, and the nearly 3,000 others killed when hijacked jets slammed into the towers, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pa., on Sept. 11, 2001. The president and first lady Melania Trump joined an observance at the Sept. 11 memorial near Shanksville, where one of the jetliners crashed after 40 passengers and crew members realized what was happening and several passengers tried to storm the cockpit. Calling it “the moment when America fought back,” Trump said the fallen “took control of their destiny and changed the course of history. … [They] joined the immortal ranks of American heroes.” At the Pentagon, Vice President Pence recalled the heroism of service members and civilians who repeatedly went back into the Pentagon to rescue survivors. The terrorists “hoped to break our spirit, and they failed,” he said. The 9/11 commemorations are by now familiar rituals, centered on reading the names of the dead. But each year at ground zero,

FOREIGN AFFAIRS Afghan rights workers said Tuesday that a blistering U.S. attack on the International Criminal Court’s investigation of war crimes allegations will strengthen a climate of impunity in Afghanistan, prolong the war and embolden those committing acts of violence. In a speech Monday, U.S. national security adviser John Bolton said Washington would not cooperate with The Haguebased court and threatened it with sanctions, saying it put U.S. sovereignty and national security at risk. The CIA and U.S. forces have been accused of committing war crimes in Afghanistan. “It’s very unfortunate because delivering justice to victims will help to facilitate the peace process in Afghanistan,” said Sima Samar, head of Afghanistan’s Human Rights Commission. “Justice is not a luxury. It is a basic human right.” In The Hague, the ICC said it will continue to do its work “ u ndeter red” by Bolton’s condemnation. The court said in a statement that it was established by a treaty

Semi-automatics raise toll Study finds the rifles enable shooters to kill twice as many victims CRIME Active shooters with semi-automatic rifles wound and kill twice as many people as those using non-automatic weapons, although chances of dying if hit in either type of assault are the same, a new analysis shows. Researchers studied FBI data on nearly 250 active shooter incidents in the United States since 2000. Almost 900 people were

wounded and 718 were killed. One in four of these attacks involved semi-automatic rifles. These weapons automatically load each bullet after firing, although firing requires pulling the trigger for each round. Semi-automatic weapons were used at Parkland High School, Orlando’s Pulse night club and Sandy Hook Elementary School. Semi-automatics, which include some assault weapons, often are thought of as being more lethal. Since they can fire rapidly, chances of being hit in those circumstances are high,

the study shows. But in active shooter attacks, which tend to occur in confined spaces and with an intent to kill, the results suggest all types of guns can be equally deadly, said lead researcher Dr. Adil Haider, a trauma surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. About four people were killed on average in semi-automatic attacks, compared with about two in other attacks, the study found. The results were published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. LINDSEY TANNER (AP)

Peru court gives jailed ex-rebel leader Abimael Guzman 2nd life sentence for car bombing supported by 123 countries. It says it has prosecuted cases only when those countries failed to do so or did not do so “genuinely.” Afghanistan is a signatory; the U.S. is not a member of the ICC. During a three-month period that ended in January, the court received 1.7 million allegations of war crimes from Afghanistan, although some of those accusations involved entire villages. Still, thousands of individual statements as well as those filed on behalf of multiple victims were received by the ICC. An ICC judge is expected to announce a decision soon on a request from prosecutors to formally open an investigation into allegations of war crimes by Afghan and U.S. forces as well as by insurgents. Some store shelves were picked clean. “There’s no water, there’s no juices, there’s no canned goods,” Kristin Harrington said at a Walmart in Wilmington, Del. WEATHER Motorists streamed inland on highways converted to one-way evacuation routes Tuesday as about 1.7 million people in three states were warned to get out of the way of Hurricane Florence, a storm taking dead aim at the Carolinas with 140 mph winds and potentially ruinous rains. Florence was expected to blow ashore late Thursday or early Friday, then slow down and wring itself out for days, unloading 1 to 2½ feet of rain that could cause flooding far inland and wreak environmental havoc by washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms. Forecasters and politicians pleaded with the public to take the warnings seriously and minced no words in describing the threat. “This storm is a monster. It’s big and it’s vicious. It is an extremely dangerous, life-threatening, historic hurricane,” North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said. He added: “The waves and the wind this storm may bring is nothing like you’ve ever seen. Even if you’ve ridden out storms before, this one is different. Don’t bet your life on riding out a monster.” President Trump declared states of emergency for North and South Carolina and Virginia, opening the way for federal aid. He said the federal government is “absolutely, totally prepared” for Florence. All three states ordered mass evacuations along the coast. But getting out of harm’s way could prove difficult. Florence is so wide that a lifethreatening storm surge was being pushed 300 miles ahead of its eye, and so wet that a swath from South Carolina to Ohio and Pennsylvania could be deluged. People across the region rushed to buy bottled water and other supplies, board up their homes, pull their boats out

catastrophic Category 4 storm but was expected to keep drawing energy from the warm water and intensify to near Category 5, which means winds of 157 mph or higher. The storm’s coastal surge could leave the eastern tip of North Carolina under more than 9 feet of water in spots, projections showed. “This one really scares me,” National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said. Federal officials begged

Japanese drugmaker Takeda moving U.S. headquarters from Chicago area to Boston

residents to put together emergency kits and have a plan on where to go. “This storm is going to knock out power days into weeks. It’s going to destroy infrastructure. It’s going to destroy homes,” said Jeff Byard, an official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Forecasters said parts of North Carolina could get 20 inches of rain, if not more, with as much as 10 inches elsewhere in the state and in Virginia, parts of Maryland and Washington, D.C. One trusted computer model, the European simulation, predicted more than 45 inches of rain in parts of North Carolina. A year ago, people would have laughed off such a forecast, but the European model was accurate in predicting 60 inches for Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area, so “you start to wonder what these models know that we don’t,” said University of Miami hurricane expert Brian McNoldy. Rain measured in feet is “looking likely,” he said. JONATHAN DREW (AP)

OUTER BANKS, N.C. For many vacationers on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, their trip is not complete without at least a glimpse of the majestic wild horses that roam the islands. As Hurricane Florence approaches, many people are expressing concern about how the horses will fare in the Category 4 storm. The Facebook page of the local Corolla Wild Horse Fund was peppered with comments from worried tourists and residents. “Thinking of all of the horses as Florence approaches. ... Praying for their safety,” one woman wrote. Wildlife experts say people needn’t worry. Wild horses are believed to have first settled on the Outer Banks hundreds of years ago and have survived many powerful storms. Sue Stuska, a wildlife biologist based at Cape Lookout National Seashore, where 118 wild horses live on Shackleford Banks, said the horses are highly sensitive to weather changes and instinctively know what to do in a storm. She said they go to higher ground during flooding, including the dunes, and head for shrub thickets and a maritime forest during high winds. “Naturally, they are meant to be outside and they have high ground and they have thick places to hide,” Stuska said. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund said “protecting” the wild horses might be more stressful for them than the storm. DENISE LAVOIE (AP)

Black women recognize tennis star’s frustration

They say Williams’ treatment by umpire shows double standard

CULTURE When Serena Williams told the umpire at the U.S. Open final that he owed her an apology, that he had stolen something from her, and then she got penalized for her words, Breea Willingham could relate to her frustration and anger. Willingham isn’t a tennis star, but she is a black woman. She and others like her say Williams’ experience resonates with them because they are often forced to watch their tone and words in the workplace in ways that men and other women are not. And if they’re not careful, they say, they risk being branded an “Angry Black Woman.” “So much of what she experiences we experience in the workplace, too,” said Willingham, a professor of criminal justice at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. “As black women ... we’re expected to stay in our lane, that lane that has been created for us. Any time we step out of that lane, then we become a problem.” The stereotype is alive and well, said Felicia Martin, 36, a federal employee from Brooklyn, N.Y. She recalls seeing a white female co-worker cursing and throwing things and not facing repercussions, while she has

been told to calm down for expressing her own frustration in a normal tone of voice. “If I’m upset about something, I should get to express that to you,” Martin said. During Saturday’s championship loss to Naomi Osaka, Williams got a warning from chair umpire Carlos Ramos for violating a rarely enforced rule against receiving coaching from the sideline. An indignant Williams emphatically denied that she had cheated. A short time later, she smashed her racket in frustration and was docked a point. She protested that and demanded an apology from Ramos,

who then penalized her a game. Many people echoed Williams’ s’ contention that she was punished ed while men on the tennis circuit it have gotten away with even en harsher language. Some black women say they ey have to worry perpetually about ut how they’re coming across to make sure they’re not dismissed ed as angry or emotional. “It’s exhausting,” said Denise se Daniels, 44, of the Bronx, N.Y., Y., who works in professional develelopment for educators. “It does es diminish from the work satissfaction that other people get to enjoy because it is an additional al cost.” DEEPTI HAJELA (AP)

Hundreds of thousands of Russian troops swept across Siberia on Tuesday in the nation’s largest-ever war games, which were joined by China. MYSTICS VS. STORM | GAME 3: 8 TONIGHT, ESPN2

Backs against the wall Facing prospect of elimination, Washington hopes to cut turnovers and make its 3s WNBA FINALS Hours after going down two games to none in the WNBA Finals, the Washington Mystics boarded multiple flights to head back east, landing before sunrise Monday with plenty of time to process a disheartening 75-73 loss in Seattle and to turn their attention to the daunting assignment in front of them. To claim the first championship in franchise history, the third-seeded Mystics must do what no WNBA team has ever done: overcome a two-game deficit in the best-of-five Finals. Nonetheless, Washington players have been decidedly upbeat ahead of tonight’s Game 3 at EagleBank Arena. They said beating the top-seeded Storm would require a few minor corrections, most notably regarding ball security. “Yeah, we weren’t on the same page,” guard Kristi Toliver said in reference to the Mystics committing five fourth-quarter

turnovers after coughing up only two during the first three quarters. “Those are things we can fix. ... Clean it up. We’re better. We’re smarter. We’ll be OK.” Toliver and the Storm’s Sue Bird were at the center of the defining sequence in the closing seconds of Game 2, which ended with the Mystics voicing displeasure over what they perceived as a missed call by the officials. Trailing by a point with 16 seconds to play, the Mystics inbounded to Toliver, who dribbled toward the basket along the baseline. She got past Bird, but the savvy veteran point guard reached around Toliver to poke the ball loose from behind. Seconds later, with players in a scrum trying to gain possession, officials called for a jump ball. Seattle won the jump, and the Mystics allowed precious seconds to lapse before fouling Alysha Clark. She made 1 of 2 free throws with 1.8 seconds left, and Mystics rookie Ariel

Atkins’ desperation half-court shot missed as time expired. Toliver said Bird fouled her with her arm, nearly clotheslining her. Bird said the play was clean. Before that, when Washington held a 61-56 lead, the Mystics allowed Seattle to score nine straight points from late in the third into the fourth. Shooting from 3-point range

continued to be a struggle for Washington, which missed all 16 long-range attempts, including six by Toliver. The Mystics were fifth in the WNBA in the regular season in 3-point percentage and set a franchise record for made 3s. But they were 3 for 37 (8 percent) on 3-point attempts in the first two games of this series. Elena Delle Donne, one of the league’s top 3-point shooters, is 0 for 3 from beyond the arc in the Finals while playing with a bone bruise in her left knee that she suffered in the semifinals. She had been wearing a brace to protect the sore joint until switching Sunday to a less restrictive sleeve over her leg and finishing with 17 points on 7-for-16 shooting with four rebounds and two blocks. “Obviously it’s really frustrating to not come away with the win, but we were able to see a lot of things,” Delle Donne said. “And we get to build on it for these next three games.”

“Monday Night Football” kicked off with a doubleheader this week, and the late game in Oakland didn’t begin until after 10 p.m. Here are three things we learned from the Rams’ 33-13 win over the Raiders. (EXPRESS)

3 Resilient defense Oakland will miss Khalil Mack, who was traded to the Bears, but its defense did well to hold the Rams to 4 of 11 on third downs and 1 for 3 in goal-to-go situations.

2 Iffy franchise arm Derek Carr’s three picks led to 13 Los Angeles points, including a 50-yard pick six by Marcus Peters. One was a jump ball, but the other two looked like awful decisions.

1 Utilizing new player Any questions about how L.A. will integrate Brandin Cooks were put to rest. He led the Rams with 87 yards receiving and generated another 87 on two pass interference calls.

Smith manages to fit Redskins well Redskins QB is blessed with a roster tailored to his conservative style ANALYSIS The term “game manager” is used disparagingly for NFL quarterbacks, but many of the qualities possessed by players given that label — taking care of the ball and emphasizing shorter passes — can be a blueprint for success. After a win over the Cardinals, it seems this is the case for Alex Smith. The Redskins’ new QB has

always been one of the league’s most conservative passers. The benefit is that he almost never puts the ball in harm’s way, which is a great start to winning games. Since he entered the NFL in 2005, Smith has the lowest average depth of target of any QB who has played at least two full seasons, according to Pro Football Focus. His average pass travels just 7.7 yards downfield — more than 3 yards per pass closer to the line of scrimmage than the most aggressive QBs in that span. Against Arizona on Sunday, Smith’s average depth of target

WR Quick will re-sign Agents for Brian Quick tweeted Tuesday that the six-year veteran will re-sign with the Redskins, who added him in free agency last season but cut him two weeks ago. was just 3.5 yards. His lone deep shot was negated by a penalty. On plays that counted, he didn’t have a pass travel farther than 12 yards in the air.

Vanderbilt’s David Williams II, 70, the first African-American athletic director in SEC, announces he’ll step down

The good news for Redskins fans is that the 2018 roster is tailored to Smith’s talents. Their top weapons, tight end Jordan Reed and running back Chris Thompson, can haul in short targets and produce after the catch. The duo combined for 10 catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns Sunday in a 24-6 win. As long as Smith isn’t asked to carry his team to victory, he can lead a winning team. That makes him a perfect fit for the Redskins, who after one week appear to be very strong. SAM MONSON (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Yzerman hands GM job to top assistant in Tampa

Panthers’ Olsen breaks foot that sidelined him last year

Judge upholds sex assault charges for Badgers’ player

Steve Yzerman announced Tuesday he is stepping down as general manager of the Lightning and handing the reins to assistant GM Julien BriseBois just two days before training camp. Yzerman will be a senior adviser working under BriseBois this season. Yzerman, 53, spent the past eight seasons as Tampa Bay’s GM. BriseBois, 41, has been his assistant the whole time. Together they built teams that went to the conference finals three times and to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015. Yzerman said he decided in late July not to sign another contract as GM and that it took until now to iron out details on what to do next. (AP)

The Panthers announced Tuesday that three-time Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen fractured the same right foot that kept him out of nine games last season during Carolina’s 16-8 win over Dallas on Sunday. Olsen will not have surgery and will be reevaluated on a “monthly basis.” He’ll remain on the roster in hopes that he can return later in the season. The team also said that second-team All-Pro right tackle Daryl Williams suffered an undisclosed knee injury and will need surgery. Ranked as the top right tackle in the NFL last season by Pro Football Focus, Williams is likely headed for injured reserve. (AP)

A judge on Tuesday ordered Wisconsin receiver Quintez Cephus to stand trial on charges that he sexually assaulted two drunken women at his Madison, Wis., apartment in April, rejecting a motion from his attorneys to dismiss one of the counts alleging that the women weren’t as impaired as investigators say. Cephus, who led Wisconsin with six touchdown catches last year, is facing felony second- and thirddegree charges — the worst of which carries a prison sentence of up to 40 years. Cephus, who is suspended indefinitely from the No. 6 Badgers, has said the sex was consensual and denies any wrongdoing. (AP)

Paul McCartney delivers familiar pleasures and breaks new ground on “Egypt Station.”

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK

Kravitz is the rocker we need

‘Egypt Station’ is the work of an aging legend who continues to grow ALBUM REVIEW Let’s get the titillation out of the way: Yes, Paul McCartney has a song on his new album in which he sings, “I just want it fuh you,” but it certainly sounds like something else. Maybe it is. Now, can we get past that? Because, honestly, what’s most impressive is not what the 76-year-old sees — or sings about — when he turns out the light. The best news is that one of the world’s greatest pop songwriters can still break some sonic ground and unearth gems six decades into his career. “Fuh You,” for all its juvenile smarm and charm, might be what gets listeners in the door, but it’s nowhere close to the best thing on “Egypt Station,” which came out Friday. For starters, candor of another kind sets this collection apart. “I Don’t Know” has the hallmarks of classic McCartney, with its

stately piano, Beatle-esque drum and melodic bass. But lyrically he trades his trademark optimism for regret and rumination: “I’ve got so many lessons to learn,” he intones. “What am I doing wrong? I don’t know.” “Happy With You” offers “Blackbird”-style finger-picking and foot-tapping. Yet the man who was jailed in Japan for pot possession now sings, “I sat around all day, I liked to get stoned. I used to get wasted but these days I don’t because I’m happy with you.” The master song-crafter is not above a little inscrutability. In the open, folky expanse of “Confidante,” he sings to a former friend or lover about “our imaginary world where butterflies wear army boots and stomp around the forest chanting long-lost anthems.” If more cheek is what you seek, it can be found on “Come On to Me.” It’s a McCartney-by-numbers, piano-pounding bluesy rocker with a solid melody and groove. There is some well-trod ground here: “Hand in Hand”

GUSTAVO CABALLERO (GETTY IMAGES)

McCartney’s still yearning and learning

McCartney mashup “Do It Now” is a best-of-Paul McCartney compilation in one song, with regal keyboards, major-minor modulations, countermelodies and a sweet choir. It also offers a revealing lyric about what drives him in old age: “Do it now while the vision is clear, do it now while the feeling is here. If you leave it too late it could all disappear.” J.K.

and “People Want Peace” come to mind. As he sings in the latter, “I know that you’ve heard it before.” One could do worse than go on about peace and love, but they don’t add much to his canon.

“Despite Repeated Warnings” is the collection’s opus: The cautionary tale — about a captain who has his own agenda and ignores the will of his people — begins majestically. Then, out of nowhere, comes a sonic shift. Driving rock, guitars and soulful horns call to mind his mid-’70s 0s best, and it goes even faster and nd rockier before powering down. wn. “Egypt Station” proves McCartney is not done. Nor should uld he be, when he can take some me risks, capitalize on his strengths ths and, at times, rival the heights of his strongest solo work. Come for the adolescent yearning, but stay tay for a rewarding, mature ride with ith stops old and new. JEFF KAROUB (AP) AP)

In these divided times, we need a rock ‘n’ roll swashbuckler who can carry a message of love and funk. Here comes Lenny Kravitz with the eclectic, scolding and wistful “Raise Vibration.” Released Friday, the record opens with the arenaready “We Can Get It All Together,” then gets gorgeously slinky in “Low.” On the standout “It’s Enough,” Kravitz is downright preachy, tackling issues of race, the environment and war. The album does hit a wall, with “Gold Dust” and “Ride” failing to resonate. Still, Kravitz has given us enough meaty tunes to last until he’s ready to come riding g to our rescue again. How can you resist a true-crime show called “Twisted Sisters” produced by a Kardashian sister (Khloe)? The series, which promises to present “the most shocking crimes ever committed by the unlikeliest of pairs,” tells a new story at 10 p.m. each Monday on Investigation Discovery.

One such case, featured in the premiere: the murder that rocked the quiet town of Grants Pass, Ore., in 1988. At first, sisters Sharon and Deborah Halstead seem pretty harmless. But they do indeed turn out to be twisted. Their story unfolds with narration by Sharon’s son, Harry Shively, along with a retired cop, a district attorney and a local reporter. The sisters believed that Sharon’s other son,

Gall in the family: Siblings shock in ‘Twisted Sisters’

The premiere episode of Investigation Discovery’s true-crime series “Twisted Sisters” focuses on a 1988 murder case in a small Oregon town.

9-year-old Leo, could tell when someone was under the control of evil forces. The boy pointed his finger at friends from a prayer group, so the sisters

went off to commit murder. There are plenty of re-enactments, which always seem a bit cheesy, but it turns out to be a suspenseful (and disturbing)

story. The show leaves a lot of loose ends, though. Sharon is still in jail, but Deborah was released for good behavior. Where is she now? We also don’t know what Harry’s life is like. And it’s puzzling when he says his comments are “going to get me in trouble, probably.” In trouble with whom? The biggest question: Why focus on crimes by sisters? Is it just sensationalism? Or is Kardashian playing off stereotypes of women by pointing out that shockingly bad behavior has nothing to do with gender? Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse
