Disaster Aid Hangs in Balance Defeat of $3.7B bill shows how bitterly divided Congress is

Beec_d] I^ehjW][

MWi^_d]jed With the economy sputtering, Congress’ unusual difficulty in delivering disaster aid or even keeping the government from shutting down is a discouraging sign for action as a bitterly divided Washington looks ahead to critical debate on President Obama’s jobs plan and efforts by a “supercommittee” to slash deficits. Republicans controlling the House scrambled Thursday to resurrect a $3.7 billion disaster aid package after an embarrassing loss the previous day. Instead of reaching out to Democrats, House GOP leaders looked to persuade wayward tea party Republicans to change their votes and help approve the assistance. The arguing was reminiscent of the poisonous atmosphere of this summer rather than lawmakers’ more recent promises to work together to find common ground

the measure, chief ly because it would permit spending at the rate approved in last month’s debt pact between Boehner and Obama, a level that is unpopular with tea party lawmakers. GOP leaders said they hoped to win a vote on a largely identical measure by convincing wayward Republicans that the alter-

Death Debate Lives On Troy Davis’ backers look for the next step after his execution 7jbWdjW Minutes before he was put to death, Troy Davis asked his supporters to “continue to fight this fight” — but will they, and how? The Georgia inmate’s case outraged hundreds of thousands of people around the world who found the evidence against him weak, and opponents of the death penalty hope their anger provokes a backlash against capital punishment. Some activists say a fitting legacy of the case would be laws that bar death sentences for those, like Davis, whose convictions are based on eyewitness testimony. With Davis gone, however, the loose coalition of groups who pushed for his freedom may simply crumble. Much may depend not on the death penalty’s most strident opponents, but on less politically active people who were drawn into the debate by Davis’ two-decade struggle. Davis was executed late Wednesday for the 1989 murder of off-

Defense attorneys said several key witnesses disputed their testimony, and other people claimed that another man confessed to the crime, but state and federal courts repeatedly upheld the conviction. Davis maintained his innocence even as he was strapped to a gurney in the death chamber. Already, there are calls for lasting changes to the capital punishment system from Davis’ advocates. Former president Jimmy Carter said he hopes “this tragedy will

Abbas Raises Standing With Bid Palestinian leader wins points at home for actions at U.N.

Palestinians burn manipulated photos of President Obama in the West Bank Thursday.

C[Wdm^_b[ $$$ American diplomats led a walkout at the U.N. General Assembly Thursday as Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad fiercely attacked the United States and major West European nations as “arrogant powers” ruled by greed and eager for military adventurism. Ahmadinejad’s fiery anti-U.S. and anti-Israeli rhetoric has been a staple of the General Assembly’s ministerial meetings. He provoked the latest controversy Thursday, saying a majority of people around the world believe the U.S. staged the Sept. 11 terror attacks in an attempt to assure Israel’s survival. (AP)

el’s military occupation of the West Bank continues. And the Arab Spring — a wave of anti-government protests sweeping the region since the start of the year — has made it more difficult

for the Palestinian leadership to appear to accept the status quo. “With this approach, I think it will a little bit defuse public pressure,” said Ghassan Khatib, spokesman for Abbas’ West Bank-based

Israelis and Palestinians balked Thursday at backing away from positions that have stalled negotiations for years, an ominous sign for U.S.-led efforts to sidetrack a Palestinian statehood bid at the United Nations through a return to talks. A proposed New York meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had proposed the two sit down together on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly session, was also shot down. (AP)

Palestinian Authority. Abbas will formally request U.N. membership for Palestine on Friday in a speech to the General Assembly, despite “great pressure” from the United States and others, said a senior aide. Palestinian officials say they believe Obama is siding with Israel at the U.N. largely because of domestic considerations as he seeks re-election next year. Full membership can only be bestowed by the U.N. Security Council, where Abbas’ quest is sure to be derailed, either by failing to get the required support of at least nine of 15 members or — if a majority is obtained — by a U.S. veto. (AP)

Scientists Say Speed of Light Surpassed =[d[lW A pillar of physics — that nothing can go faster than the speed of light — appears to be smashed by an oddball subatomic particle that has apparently made a giant end run around Albert Einstein’s theories. Scientists at the world’s largest physics lab said Thursday they have clocked neutrinos trav-

eling faster than light’s speed of 186,282 miles per second. That’s something that, according to Einstein’s 1905 special theory of relativity — the famous E=mc2 equation — just doesn’t happen. “The feeling that most people have is this can’t be right, this can’t be real,” said James Gillies, a spokesman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The organization, known as CERN,

hosted part of the experiment, which is unrelated to the massive $10 billion Large Hadron Collid-

er also located at the site. Gillies told The Associated Press that the readings have so astounded researchers that they are asking others to independently verify the measurements before claiming an actual discovery. University of Maryland physics department chairman Drew Baden called it “a flying carpet,” something that was too fantastic to be believable. (AP)

7dWboi_i The drama over the Palestinians’ bid for U.N. recognition is still unfolding, but President Mahmoud Abbas appears to have won new respect at home for standing up to the United States and moving their decadeslong quest for statehood back to the center of the world stage. Recognition of Palestine — even in a possible watered-down form, since full U.N. membership is blocked by a certain U.S. veto — won’t bring the Palestinians true independence anytime soon. It might not even be enough to improve their hoped-for leverage in future border talks with Israel. But despite such uncertainties and the risk of a serious rift with Washington, Abbas and his aides say they had to try to break the diplomatic impasse of recent years with a bold move. Abbas was losing domestic credibility — as well as political ground against militant rival Hamas — by sticking to the old formula of U.S.-brokered negotiations with Israel. Israelis and Palestinians tend to blame the other side for the failure to reach a deal. Despite several far-reaching efforts, gaps could ultimately not be bridged, and Isra-

MehbZ Mullen: Pakistan Aids Militants The top U.S. military officer on Thursday accused Pakistan’s intelligence agency of supporting Haqqani network fighters in planning and conducting last week’s attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Pakistani duplicity puts in jeopardy not only the frayed U.S.-Pakistani partnership against terrorism but also the outcome to the decade-old war in Afghanistan. In his final congressional testimony before retiring next week, Mullen said success in Afghanistan is threatened by the Pakistani gov-

ernment’s support for the Haqqani network of militants, which he called a “veritable arm” of Pakistan’s intelligence agency. Repeating a charge he made earlier this week, Mullen said on Thursday that with Pakistani support, Haqqani operatives were behind not only the Sept. 13 embassy assault but also a recent truck bomb that wounded 77 U.S. soldiers and a June 28 attack against the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul — as well as “a host of other smaller but effective operations.” Mullen said Pakistani intelligence is using the Haqqanis and other extremist groups as its proxies inside Afghanistan. If you pledged to take part in Car-Free Day, for instance, you could have won an iPad, a bicycle, a SmarTrip card, a Capital Bikeshare membership or Nats tickets. And did I mention the free slices of Flippin’ Pizza just for taking the pledge? Sorry you missed that. But while prizes are awesome, it’s hard to believe that peo-

ple behind the wheel are so easily swayed by swag. To figure out what makes this driver demographic tick, and what would make them really consider quitting their cars, I stationed myself outside of a few downtown lots and garages. It turns out, most folks aren’t so into their wheels — or Washington’s wretched gridlock and pricey parking options. It’s that they don’t see a viable alternative.

(I also learned that parking attendants don’t take too kindly to reporters asking their patrons why they insist on driving.) “For me, it’s because I have a 4-year-old to drop off, and his school isn’t anywhere near a Metro station,” 30-year-old Shilonda Waller told me as she hopped into her car near Chinatown. The Landover, Md., resident said that even if her son were in a Metro-accessible school, she’d worry about the flexibility of transit. That’s been the problem for Plen Smith. “I’m car-free 90 percent of the time, and I want to be at 100,” promised the 33-year-old Petworth resident. But when his job calls for a day of meetings with clients, he knows he needs his car. Just-released U.S. Census Bureau numbers show that folks in the D.C. area face the secondworst commute in the country. Drivers here don’t need iPads and pizza. They need additional train stations, more bus routes and shorter wait times. That’s why the most important event this week was Don’t X Out Public Transportation Day. In recognition, rallies were held across the country (although not in Washington) on Tuesday to fight proposed cuts in federal funding that could lead to transit price hikes, even more crowding on trains and buses, and fewer options for people who don’t want to drive. Of course I support increasing awareness of public transportation, and there must be people out there who don’t realize how simple it could be to take a bus to the office, or to use a bike trail. But if we want to make every day CarFree Day, what we really need is a better system.

IcWhj 9b_Ya0 The wait is over. You can now reload your SmarTrip card from the convenience of your computer. Metro GM Richard Sarles announced Thursday that a pilot program that included 150,000 customers is now over, and the service is available to everyone at wmata.com. “Customers can now go online rather than getting in line,” said Sarles. “This is the latest — but certainly not the last — example of how we are going to use technology to improve our customers’ experience.” (E XPRESS)

Not Your Average Green House The Solar Decathlon pits leading home designs by students worldwide against each other in a competition to make homes not only energy efficient but also energy producers. That’s not enough for some teams at this year’s Department of Energy competition that are taking a more holistic approach, including water-saving technologies in their designs and working to make sure their advances make it past the concept stage and into neighborhoods. The University of Maryland’s entry in the competition that opens Friday is called WaterShed, and it is both energy-conscious and waterconscious. That’s because energy and water use are intertwined in efforts to

restore the Chesapeake Bay, where stormwater runoff carries pollutants from six states into the nation’s largest estuary. So, in addition to the solar panels and solar water heating system, the squarish house is constructed of two rectangular halves with roof

sections that slope in to the middle of the house, where an artificial wetland catches the water that isn’t trapped by the house’s green roof. The wetland is also irrigated with gray water from the shower, sinks and laundry. “So, if you think about it, pretty

much anything that comes through the house remains in the house. In a typical house, it’s pushed off site, so it goes into the watershed,” explained Scott Tjaden, 22, a University of Maryland senior studying environmental science and technology. Energy and water are inseparable, said Nancy K. Stoner, acting assistant administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as she toured the house. “The key thing is the connection between water and energy. If you save water, you save energy. If you save energy, you also save water,” Stoner said. The home cost about $350,000, team members said. Organizers say the winning home will be affordable and easy to live in, and will supply energy for cooking, cleaning and entertaining. The winning home will also provide adequate hot water and as much or more energy than it consumes. (AP)

Where the Jobs Aren’t

Ej^[h <_dZ_d]i

Nationwide, a ‘lost generation’ will feel the recession’s effects for years *&C :[Y_i_edi

Young adults are the recession’s lost generation. In record numbers, they’re struggling to find work, shunning longdistance moves to live with Mom and Dad, delaying marriage and raising kids out of wedlock, if they’re becoming parents at all. The unemployment rate for them is the highest since World War II, and they risk living in poverty more than others — nearly 1 in 5. New 2010 census data released Thursday show the wrenching impact of a recession that officially ended in mid-2009. There are missed opportunities and dim prospects for a generation of mostly 20-somethings and 30-somethings coming of age in a prolonged period of joblessness. “We have a monster jobs problem, and young people are the biggest losers, said Andrew Sum, an economist and director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University. He noted that recent college graduates getting by on waitressing, bartending and odd jobs will have to compete with new graduates for entrylevel career positions when the job market does improve. Richard Freeman, an economist at Harvard University, said young people “will be scarred and they will be called the ‘lost generation’ — in that their careers would not be the same way if we had avoided this economic disaster. Employment among young adults ages 16 to 29 was 55.3 percent, compared with 67.3 percent in 2000; it’s the lowest since the end of World War II. Young males who lacked a college degree were most likely to lose jobs due to reduced demand for blue-collar jobs

Lawrence Booth of Hillsboro, Ore., right, has struggled to support his family since returning from the Iraq War in 2008. Booth is unemployed and fears that he and his family will not have enough money to pay rent this month. He has held jobs since his return but none that add up to a career.

in construction, manufacturing and transportation during the downturn. Among teenagers, employment was less than 30 percent. The employment-to-population ratio for all age groups from 2007 to 2010 dropped faster than for any similar period since the government began tracking the data, in 1948. In the past year, 43 of the 50 largest metropolitan areas continued to post declines in employment: Charlotte, N.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Los Angeles; and Detroit. Each experienced a severe housing bust, budget deficit or meltdown in industries such as banking or manufacturing. Without work, young adults aren’t

starting careers and lives in new cities. Meanwhile, younger women across all race and ethnic groups had fewer children compared with in 2008. “Are people just delaying births, or does this represent a real loss of babies that won’t be replaced? During the Great Depression, there was a permanent loss of births — they were never made up, said Kenneth Johnson, sociology professor and senior demographer at the University of New Hampshire. Further impact of the recession was seen in the District of Columbia and 14 states, all of which had the largest ratios of college graduates to high-school dropouts, more than 3-to-1. Several of these places, including the District

Opting against a big move after college, roughly 5.9 million Americans ages 25 to 34 last year lived with their parents, an increase of 25 percent from before the recession. Driven by a record 1 in 5 young men who doubled up in households, men are now nearly twice as likely as women to live with their parents. Marriages fell to a record low last year of just 51.4 percent among adults 18 and over, compared with 57 percent in 2000. Among young adults 25 to 34, marriage was at 44.2 percent, also a new low. Compared to 2008, births declined 6 percent among 20-to34 year-olds last year even though the number of women in this group increased by more than 1 million. (AP)

and states with larger immigrant populations, had the widest income gaps between rich and poor. The number of Hispanic children in poverty rose by half a million to 6.1 million last year, making up a majority of the increase in total child poverty. “We are really at a crossroads, said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. “These new young immigrants and their children need a pathway to the middle class — good educations, affordable housing and jobs — at the same time federal and state budgets are strapped for funds. While we face tough choices, the quality of our future labor force depends on meeting their needs. HOPE YEN (AP)

The latest census figures also show a rebound in the foreign-born population to 40 million, or 12.9 percent, the highest share since 1920. The 1.4 million increase from 2009 was the biggest since the mid-decade housing boom and could fuel debate in this election season about immigration strategy.

,+! People age 65 and older tended to return to or stay in their jobs, accounting for the few employment gains in recent months. About 1 in 6 older people is now in the labor force. That’s the highest level since the 1960s, before more generous Social Security and Medicare benefits made it more attractive to retire.

(+ About 1 in 4 families with children are headed by single mothers, a record. (AP)

Redskins rookie Ryan Kerrigan, right, has made a good early impression after being drafted in the first round earlier this year.

Sudden Impact Kerrigan lives up to his top billing in his first pro games J^[ H[Zia_di The stakes immediately soared for Ryan Kerrigan when the Redskins used the No. 16 pick of this year’s draft to select the defensive end from Purdue. And Kerrigan didn’t have to look any further than linebacker Brian Orakpo, another first-round pick, to see what the team expects him to become. After two games, it looks like that’s an impact player.

“He’s doing a great job. We put a lot of pressure on the outside linebacker position, both in the run and the pass, and Ryan’s picked it up very quickly,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “He’s made some .0)& f$c$ Monday | ESPN

plays both in the running game and the passing game and pass coverage. I like what I see.” Kerrigan rarely looked like a rookie in Washington’s first two games, even with the adjustment of changing positions for the Redskins’ 3-4 scheme.

Kerrigan made one of the games’ most memorable plays, tipping an Eli Manning pass in the air, intercepting it and running it back for a 9-yard touchdown in an eventual 28-14 triumph over the Giants. “It’s been my plan and goal to make an impact, so I don’t want to say I’m surprised,” Kerrigan said. “But I definitely was surprised to get the pick six because I never scored in college. But that’s what they drafted me for — to make an impact.” Last week, against Arizona, Kerrigan recorded his first NFL sack and teamed with Orakpo to create havoc in the Cardinals’ passing game — the exact plan Shana-

Roy Helu had a breakout game against the Cardinals, rushing for 74 yards on 10 carries, likely earning himself more playing time in the future. Chris Neild was the feel-good story of Week 1, as the 253rd selection in the draft tallied two sacks and a forced fumble in just eight plays from his nose tackle position. Injuries in the secondary forced Brandyn Thompson into the lineup against the Cardinals, and the seventh-round corner registered two tackles. E.S.

han had in mind when the team drafted Kerrigan. Many talented players have struggled with the adjustment from college to pro and, in Kerrigan’s case, the element of standing up and rushing the passer as opposed to having a hand on the ground. “The speed of the game, the level of talent in the NFL is different, and I’m trying to adapt my game to that,” he said. “There’s no drop-off from opponent to opponent.” So far, however, the rookie hasn’t missed a beat. “It hasn’t been easy — there are a lot of things I have to do better, and I know that,” Kerrigan said. “But I want to be someone who can make plays for the defense.” ELLIOT T SMITH

IWc[ EbZ 8[d]Wbi0 For authorities tracking a marijuana shipment from California, the trail ended unexpectedly at the home of a Cincinnati Bengals player in suburban northern Kentucky where police say they found more drugs. No arrests have been made. Police were still investigating the case Thursday that has entangled Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson. A package containing 2½ pounds of marijuana was tracked to Simpson’s home. (AP)

Romo Stays Out of Harm’s Way G.J. MCCARTHY/ THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS/AP

Ailing QB watches as banged-up Dallas hits the practice field Fhe <eejXWbb

With his arms crossed, ball cap on — forward — and an electronic stimulation device working to heal his broken rib, Tony Romo could only watch as the other Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks threw warm-up passes at the start of practice Thursday. Still, just being on the field was an indication Romo could start Monday night against the Redskins. Romo wore a jersey and shorts and moved gingerly. When everyone stretched, he was slow to join them, then didn’t do anything

Tony Romo sat out of the Cowboys’ practice on Thursday because of a broken rib.

that required bending or moving his arms. At the start of team drills, he stood with the backups, watching with his arms clasped behind his back. Jon Kitna worked with the first team and will start

I7?DJI Expect a gunslinger style shootout. I’m looking for 1,000 total yards of offense.

PACKERS (MINUS 3.5) AT BEARS

F79A;HI The Packers aren’t a good team to be facing when you don’t have an offensive line.

F79A;HI I tried but could not come up with one good reason why I think the Bears will win.

F79A;HI Forgot about the NFC Championship game? Blitz-happy Green Bay will refresh the Bears’ memory.

F79A;HI Playoff rematch. Unfortunately for the Bears, the results will be the same as last time.

;7=B;I The Eagles’ defense will be more important to this game than Mike Vick.

;7=B;I Faking injuries and punting out of bounds is how you beat FC Barcelona. Eagles soar.

;7=B;I Michael Vick is playing, therefore I’m picking the Eagles.

GIANTS (NO LINE) AT EAGLES

;7=B;I The Eagles run over the Giants, who are busy lying down while faking injuries.

if Romo can’t. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones watched briefly from a far sideline, then left without stopping to comment. This was Dallas’ first practice

since Romo overcame the broken rib and a tear in his lung to pull out a comeback victory in overtime against San Francisco on Sunday. He’s been praised for his toughness and leadership just a week after being scorned for bad plays and poor decisions that led to a loss in the opener, and he also earned the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award. The Cowboys (1-1) came out of the 49ers game with so many injuries to key players that coach Jason Garrett gave them an extra day off Wednesday. The status of many other key players remains in flux. Stakes Are High For Game in Dallas Finally, here is what Redskins fans have been waiting for: a Dallas week that means something. Sure, it’s early in the season, and any playoff talk is nonsense at this point. That doesn’t mean Monday night’s game against the Cowboys isn’t huge for the NFC East-leading Redskins. (How often do I get to say that?) How big is it? 8o CWjj Well, for one, WashIm[died ington will be 3-0 if it wins. Sorry to steal coach Mike Shanahan’s thunder with that answer. Three wins would also match last season’s win total for divisional games — with four more games to go. Most important, though, a win would buy the Redskins some insurance for the inevitable hiccup (see the Rams game the next week).

We all know this team, led by Rex Grossman, is going to lose some games it ought to win, just as it grasped victory from the clutches of defeat last weekend. Getting a head start on the surprising wins — and beating Dallas in its home opener would qualify for that category — is vital to having a successful year. Last, we would be remiss not to mention the most important reason of all to win on Monday — it’s a game against THE COWBOYS. To reach Matt Swenson, e-mail matt.swenson@readexpress.com

United in Push for Playoffs D.C. United is within reach of returning to the MLS postseason for the first time since 2007, but with seven games remaining in the regular season, there’s work to be done. Wednesday’s tie against Chivas USA did little to relieve the stress and clear up the muddled playoff picture going forward, especially considering that United blew a two-goal advantage at home to settle for the point. “We’re still in the race, but it’s definitely a missed opportunity,” said rookie defender Ethan White. AVI CREDITOR

D.C. United hasn’t won two consecutive league matches with Ben Olsen as coach.

M>E C7A;I J>; 9KJ

M>O :$9$ 9EKB: =;J ?D

The top three teams in the Eastern and Western conferences snag automatic bids, followed by the four teams with the next best records, regardless of conference affiliation. D.C. is two points behind Portland for the 10th and final spot but has played two fewer games than the Timbers. To say that their head-tohead meeting in the season’s penultimate game on Oct. 19 is crucial is an understatement. Despite a lack of consistency, D.C. is still in the running for an automatic berth, as well, as no Eastern Conference teams have yet pulled away from the pack.

Despite its lost opportunity against Chivas, D.C. has the benefit of being within striking distance of its competition and has more games left to play than any other team in the league. Veterans like Dwayne De Rosario, Josh Wolff and Santino Quaranta have been down this road before, as has current coach Ben Olsen — at least in his playing days. “Veterans have to carry that weight a bit more, and at times like these it does fall on the older guys,” Wolff said. “We have the wherewithal, and we’ve got to lead guys around the field, on the field and off the field.”

M>EÊI B;<J ED J>; I9>;:KB;

M>O :$9$ 9EKB: C?II EKJ

D.C. plays red-hot Real Salt Lake (15-7-6) on Saturday and winds down the season against Philadelphia (9-712), Columbus (11-10-8), Vancouver (4-14-10), Chicago (5-8-15), Portland (10-12-7) and Sporting Kansas City (10-9-10) — all of whom are in postseason contention except Vancouver and Chicago. Four of those matches are at home, including the one against RSL.

D.C. hasn’t won consecutive games in more than two years, has had trouble finishing off opponents, and may be too youthful (four starters from Wednesday are 20 or younger) to grasp the moment. “Part of it is youth, and part of it is complacency,” Olsen said after the Chivas draw. “It’s absolutely going to stop. It has to stop, or we will not make the playoffs. It’s that simple.”

J[hfi <eejXWbb After Danny O’Brien’s rapid ascent from clipboard-toting backup to ACC rookie of the year, a lot of people were quick to tell him how great he was and how great Maryland would become with the young quarterback behind center. But last week, when his mistakes — three interceptions, including one that killed a potential game-winning drive — doomed the Terrapins (1-1) against a ranked West Virginia team, O’Brien found that those

wishing to console him numbered far fewer than those who had been offering pats on the back. “If you want a quick way to find out who your friends are, throw three picks in a game,” he said. “A lot less people are in your corner after that.” The sophomore wouldn’t allow his youth and relative inexperience to be excuses for his interceptions Instead, less than 24 hours after the loss, he began immersing himself in game film and game planning for Saturday’s home matchup against Temple (2-1). “He’s just so amped right now, ready to go and ready to get that taste out of his mouth,” junior

O’Brien has never lacked in work ethic or confidence, coach Randy Edsall said, noting that the latter may explain some of his overly ambitious and ultimately detrimental passes last week. “He has so much confidence in his own ability that he might try to throw a ball into a very small window when he shouldn’t,” Edsall said. O’Brien has overcome adversity before. Last season, he fumbled the first snap he took at Maryland after coming off the bench against Navy. He never stepped back on the field. Two weeks later, he again lasted only one play. He was sacked, and he fumbled on the final play of the

DOUGLAS FRIEDMAN/BRAVO

STYLIST, STAR OF “THE RACHEL ZOE PROJECT”

Did having a baby change your style? Well, my baby is 5 months old, so I have to be a bit more practical than I was before. I have to wear a lot of black because spit-ups happen so often, and I can’t wear a lot of sequins or buttons or anything that could be harmful to him. But, other than that, I’m just wearing what I wore in my regular life.

How can new moms keep stylish with a young baby? You really have to have a lot of favorites and go-to basics in your closet that make your life easier. There are pieces that look great all the time and are also really comfortable. They tend to work really well when you only have two minute to get dressed, so I recommend investing in pieces that fit you really well, like jeans or great leggings with an oversized sweater. What stylish things is your baby wearing? He wears a lot of great onesies by Ralph Lauren, the Gap and Petit Bateau. There are so many options for babies right now. I just always make sure the pieces are comfortable and that the cotton is organic.

You lived in Washington when you attended GWU. What do you think of D.C. style? Ha! D.C. is so conservative. More conservative than most cities I’ve lived in, but that’s because it’s always had a very classic sense of style. I couldn’t tell you how it’s evolved. It’s been a long time since I visited. What’s your favorite fall trend? I’m wearing a lot of menswear, and I’m really happy women are picking up on the trend. It’s one of the ways that women look the sexiest. It’s a way to be sexy in a subtle way without revealing too much. It also exudes power and confidence. You have some new assistants on the show this season. What qualities make a good one? The primary things I look for are honesty and loyalty. But an assistant also needs a great eye for style and enthusiasm for wanting to learn. I’ve been lucky. I’m finally at a place in my company where I have a tremendous team, and we all love coming to work every day. K ATHERINE BOYLE (E XPRESS)

Joe’s To Go YOU’VE MICROWAVED HOT POCKETS AT NOON three times this week already. Get out of your rut with Celine Cossou-Bordes’ new book, “Cooking With Trader Joe’s: Pack a Lunch” ($24.95, Brown Bag Publishers), with its no-fuss, brown-bag options that use ingredients from the popular grocery store. Recipes emphasize ease — smoked salmon in herbed pancakes, Moroccan orange salad, bento boxes with flavors from Japan, India and France. Sadly, the book doesn’t condone Two Buck Chuck in your thermos.

Ciao, Bella IT WOULD BE SNOBBY TO SAY that everything is better in

Italy. It would be snobby, too, to say that the only thing more luxurious and sensual than Dolce & Gabbana’s lingerie is their Perfect Finish Creamy Foundation ($66, Saksfifthavenue.com). We don’t want to crave the silky cream that feels like foundation and finishes powder-light. We don’t want to think that a foundation has rendered nose-powdering unnecessary. Alas, it’s all true. This sweet splurge in a glass makes skin luminous without caking or adding gobs of shine. It renders Photoshop unnecessary. It limits imperfection. It doesn’t fade; it doesn’t flake. Oh, viva Italia!

I need a shoe that tells freshmen, “I rule the school, but will still take you under my wing and show you the roller coaster that is high school.” A summer of nannying and future babysitting appointments make price not a concern. — MARGO

Snake Charming DESIGNER ELAINE TURNER hails from Houston — and,

This fall, she’s gone in for exotic textures, as in python-texture leather boots ($425, Elaineturner.com), moc croc clutches ($295) and shooties in coppery mock snakeskin ($295). It’d all work for days and nights on a glam trip abroad or for adding an exotic edge to hours in the cubicle. Still, we’d recommend staying out of the reptile house at the zoo, lest there be an upslithering.

Manolo says, ayyy, the Manolo has been giving out the shoe advice for so long that entire generations of the schoolchildren have grown to womanhood! Happily, it appears that the counsel of the Manolo, about how to achieve better living and social domination through beautiful shoes, is having the desired effect. Indeed, it is clear that the Manolo’s friend Margo, through careful attention to the Tao of the Manolo, has made it to the pinnacle of teenaged human achievement — the cool, senior girl’s table in the high-school cafeteria — without losing her humanity. Yes, she rules the school with the iron fist (hidden behind the velvet pompom) but she has not neglected the little peoples who are her subjects. Truly, this is our definition of gracious majesty, for Margo has learned one of the central truths of the Way of the Manolo: With great shoes comes great responsibility. Here, in the gray suede, is the Jerico from Vigotti ($139, Zappos.com) the reasonably priced ankle boot with the rock ’n’ roll zipper-cuff detail. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane, shown, bucked the baseball trend of relying on common statistics — batting average, home runs and RBI for hitters; wins, losses and ERA for pitchers — and turned to hard numbers over subjective scouting to fuel his team’s successful runs in the early 2000s. His staff helped transform what became known as the stats revolution, an overhaul from the days of basic box scores. COLUMBIA PICTURES-SONY

In “Moneyball,” Brad Pitt portrays real-life Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane.

7d 7Êi#Fbki ;\\ehj A come-from-behind story for the ages, ‘Moneyball’ is a winner anyone can cheer for <_bc H[l_[m Like a cold beer under a bluebird sky; like a flawless line drive on a warm summer’s day; like a long, languorous seventh-inning stretch — “Moneyball” satisfies. A sports-centric come-frombehind drama that harbors profound truths under its self-effacing grin of an exterior, “Moneyball” is a movie of such loping, unforced ease and solid entertainment value, it’s easy to take its gifts for granted. After all, who couldn’t make a terrific film out of a book by master narrative journalist Michael Lewis, adapted by gold-standard screenwriters Steve Zaillian and Aaron

Sorkin? Who could go wrong with a protagonist played by go-to Golden Boy Brad Pitt, and a nerdy comic foil played by Jonah Hill? What kind of idiot could blow one of American sports’ great come-from-behind moral victories — set within the dreamy fields of baseball, so evocative of all-American values? The answer, of course, is a filmmaker who would dare to fatten such good bones with unnecessary melodrama or arty flourishes. Luckily, “Moneyball” — which was briefly under the directorial hand of Steven Soderbergh — landed with another consummate pro: Ben-

nett Miller, who proved so adroit in bringing Truman Capote’s story to the screen in 2005’s “Capote.” Here, Miller barely puts a foot wrong in bringing to life the tale of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, who in 2002 — competing against teams with three times his payroll — sought to rebuild the slumping A’s and revolutionize baseball recruiting using “Sabermetrics,” a system by which players are chosen based on who gets on base most often. Like last year’s “The Social Network,” also written by Sorkin, “Moneyball” infuses improbable emotion into what is essentially a numbercrunching, analytical endeavor; to paraphrase Sorkin himself, “Moneyball” is no more about statistics and algorithms than “The Social Network” was about coding. As a cry of the heart for the losers, left-behinds and let-go who still have something of value to offer, “Moneyball” plays like a particularly heart-rending parable of these economic times. And with baseball season ready to wrap up, it gives fans some terrific games to watch, a miracle of a winning streak to cheer and a rumpled, humane hero to root for. Change the Game

Off to a Bad Start Sometimes I have trouble coming up with opening lines for my columns. Not so with this one about “Restless,” out Friday. In fact, I came up with multiple starts in the theater, because it beat actually watching the movie. So, I present the opening lines of six columns that will never get written, because I don’t want to think about this movie ever again: If I get a terminal illness in the next five years, I’m going to be as petulant and whiny 8o Ah_ij[d as possible in an effort FW][#A_hXo to disprove everything movies say about dying young women. “Restless” focuses on the relationship between Annabel (Mia Wasikowska) and Enoch (Henry Hopper), who is so grief-stricken over the death of his parents he can’t be bothered to comb his hair. I have been very vocal about my distaste for the work of Ron Howard, one of the producers of “Restless.” Now I know he can make me hate him just by writing a check. It is not possible to roll your eyes for 95 straight minutes. I know, because I just watched “Restless” and my retinas cramped up. In movie shorthand, wearing a hat is the new coughing blood into a hankie. You can’t ever be cold in the movies. Hat means cancer. There’s a lot left to the imagination in “Restless”: We don’t know how old the characters are, whether a ghost is real, whether the characters believe in an afterlife. What is unambiguous is that this film is a trite piece of blecch. Read Kristen’s previous columns at: expressnightout.com/thereelist

7 8WhhW][ e\ 8kbb[ji Mindless and easily forgettable, the action flick ‘Killer Elite’ lacks any sense of realism

Director: Gary McKendry Stars: Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Robert De Niro In a Nutshell: When his mentor is taken captive, a retired member of Britain’s Elite Special Air Service is forced into action. His mission: Kill three assassins dispatched by their cunning leader.

In the silly and overwrought action thriller “Killer Elite,” Jason Statham plays Danny Bryce, a professional assassin with a soft spot for women, children and the innocent. Good luck figuring out who falls into that last category. Danny’s bullets fly so indiscriminately that it doesn’t really matter who’s the hero and who’s the villain here. Moral ambiguity may be the point, to the extent that there is one, in this bloody and needlessly complicated exercise in adrenal fatigue. Mind you, the taxing nature of the violence is felt only by the audience. Danny and the film’s cast of killers don’t appear to be terribly troubled by what they do for a living. “Killing is easy,” says Danny. “It’s living with it that’s hard.” You wouldn’t know it from

It’s called “50/50,” and it opens in theaters next week. “Restless,” which opens today, is not this era’s “Love Story,” despite its most ingratiating efforts to find meaning, laughter and romance by way of a too-young protagonist bat-

tling with cancer. If “Restless” ultimately succumbs to acute cuteness, director Gus Van Sant has done a good job finding the 21st-century equivalent to Ryan O’Neal and Ali McGraw, who became stars in the first movie. Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper — son of Dennis — manage to deliver distinctive performances here as wise, troubled teenagers given to morbid humor, quirky sensibilities and a penchant for taking a tasteless joke too far. The artificially enhanced mammal Winter plays herself in “Dolphin Tale.”

A_Zi M_bb <b_f El[h É:ebf^_dÊ <_bc H[l_[m Chances are, you’ve heard this “Dolphin Tale” before. Winter, the artificially enhanced mammal at the heart of Charles Martin Smith’s new family drama, has been profiled on CNN, NBC’s “Today” show, and in countless newspapers across the country. She might be the only dolphin in the world with her own website (Seewinter.com), Facebook page and Twitter account. But even if you wouldn’t know Winter from Flipper, you should have no trouble plugging into the film’s relaxed and enjoyably unhurried pace, because Smith has delivered such a heartwarmingly hokey and accessible production. It’s a whale of a tale, made more special by being mostly true. Winter the dolphin was 3 months old when crab nets entangled her off the shores of Florida’s Gulf coastline. Marine biologists rescued Winter and nursed her back to health, but not before they had to surgically remove her badly damaged tail. Here, Smith reduces “Dolphin Tale” to “Old Yeller” with a blowhole. As predictable as the tides, it adheres firmly to the age-old “kidand-his-pet” template, tapping sentimental beats as it mixes in cheesy comic relief to entertain kids in the theater. COLOMBIANA (PG-13, 105 minutes) The protagonist of “Colombiana” is a young woman who has strong feelings for her parents, a warm relationship with her boyfriend and a proclivity for sketching the delicate Colombian orchid for which she’s named. Of course, her parents are dead, her boyfriend is at great risk, and she draws the flower in black lipstick on the bodies of her victims. Yes, Cataleya is an assassin. And, yes, she has vowed revenge on the drug dealers who killed her folks. But despite a list of hits that’s topped 20, the killer — played by “Avatar’s” Zoe Saldana — is a sensitive, sometimes weepy soul. And “Colombiana,” at least by comparison with such Besson franchises as the “Transporter” series, has a gentle touch. MARK JENKINS CONTAGION (PG-13, 102 MINUTES) Before this movie is over, you will stop unconsciously touching your face. The script, which is reportedly based on solid scientific research about disease and its transmission, treatment and control, is admirably unsensational. And that’s even considering the fact that the virus at the heart of the story has a shorter and more lethal incubation period than anything we’ve previously seen. Gwyneth Paltrow, whose Beth Emhoff is the first to come down with the new disease, is dead minutes into the movie. Hundreds of millions of victims follow, though Beth’s husband, Mitch, played by a schlubby-looking Matt Damon, remains immune. Along with his

M.O. THE DEBT (R, 114 minutes) Splitting its story between two years, 1966 and 1997, “The Debt” follows three Mossad agents forced to ask themselves what constitutes justice after the Holocaust’s unthinkable crimes. Though Helen Mirren features most prominently in advertising materials, the film’s heart beats with the younger version of her character, played by this year’s breakthrough actress, Jessica Chastain. As Rachel Singer, an agent pursuing “Surgeon of Birkenau” Dieter Vogel, she poses as an East German fertility patient and must allow the man she’s hunting to give her multiple medical examinations. We know from the film’s first scenes (set in 1997) that

Singer’s team will capture the doctor, who will later be killed trying to escape, and that the three will be hailed as Israeli heroes. But how they caught Vogel, and their attempts to bring him back alive, are the meat of the story. JOHN DEFORE D O N ’ T B E A F R A I D OF THE DARK (R, 99 minutes) “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” feels retro in all the right ways. Screenwriters Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins adapted the script from a 1973 TV movie of the same name. The changes they made pull the tale further back, though, into the realm of fable — especially their decision to change the protagonist from an adult to a little girl: Sally (Bailee Madison) has been sent by her preoccupied mother to live with her father and his new girlfriend (Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes) in the grand old mansion they’re renovating.

Sally doesn’t want to be there but can’t resist exploring. Soon she discovers a hidden basement whose rusty, boltedup ash pit speaks to her. Scratchy, faint voices whisper to Sally, offering friend-

ship. Followers of del Toro’s work will see reminders of “Pan’s Labyrinth” here, but the storyteller is writing for another director, first-timer Troy Nixey, and keeps the action rooted in the real world. J.D. DRIVE (R, 100 minutes) Ryan Gosling delivers a slow, white-hot burn of a performance in “Drive,” a nervy, understated ode to one of Hollywood’s most cherished archetypes, the sad-eyed man of few words.

Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn neatly manage the hat trick of paying homage to wheelmen of yore while reinvigorating the genre with style, smarts and flashes of wit. Refn, a Danish director, is known for his love of blood, and when the plot of “Drive” quickens he finds plenty of chances to indulge in his penchant for lurid, stylized violence. But even his most fetishized flourishes are tempered

here. Low-key, sleek and sophisticated, “Drive” provides the visceral pleasures of pulp without sacrificing art. A . H . FRIGHT NIGHT (R, 120 minutes) “Fright Night” improves on the premise it has been handed, producing a modernized version of a decades-old story that’s superior to its predecessor in virtually every aspect. In this case, “Fright Night” director Craig Gillespie remakes Todd

[dj[hjW_dc[dj beeaekj “Our Idiot Brother” turns out to be mistitled. It should be called “The Brother We Treat Like an Idiot,” and that goes as much for the filmmakers as the dysfunctional family at the core of this easygoing misfire. Paul Rudd plays Ned Rochlin, a perpetually blissed-out biodynamic farmer who in the film’s first scene sells pot to a police officer. When he gets out of jail, he embarks on

a serial-crash with his three sisters, upending their lives with his anarchic honesty and unbridled naivete. A . H . WARRIOR (PG-13, 139 minutes) Judging from its poster — a stark black sheet on which two shirtless dudes display a dozen well-defined abs and four frightening pecs — “Warrior” should be just another slab of lunkhead cinema, a thin story designed to fill UFC coffers. Don’t

be fooled. Tom Hardy plays Tommy, a black-sheep son with a father (played by Nick Nolte) so abusive that he and his mother fled to the other side of the country. Tommy’s brother Brendan (Joel Edgerton), meanwhile, stayed at home to be near his sweetheart. They’re now married with kids, and although they have three jobs between them, they’re financially underwater. Independently of

Holland’s 1985 horror comedy of the same name. The story still steals from Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece “Rear Window,” with awkward teenager Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) casting suspicions that his mysterious new neighbor, Jerry (Colin Farrell), is a vampire. As Charlie’s accusations fall on deaf ears, the arrogant Jerry engages in a deadly cat-and-mouse game that draws in Charlie’s childhood friend (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and his girlfriend (Imogene Poots). At its best, “Fright Night” mixes sly pop-culture references, “Twilight” jabs and Scooby gang jokes with legitimately suspenseful horror sequences sure to unnerve even the most seasoned genre fans. SE AN O’CONNELL THE HELP (PG-13, 137 minutes) Fans of Kathryn Stockett’s folksy, ingratiating novel of the same name can rest easy: The director, Tate Taylor — a childhood friend of the author who, like her, grew up in Jackson, Miss., where the story is set — has preserved the book’s story line, characters and confiding tone with loyalty worthy of any best friend. Readers who felt they came to intimately know characters such as Celia (Jessica Chastain) and Skeeter (Emma Stone) are likely to greet their alter egos on screen like cherished, long-lost friends — especially the nobly suffering Aibileen, here brought to quietly watchful life by Viola Davis. Skeeter gets a job as a newspaper cleaning-advice columnist, but when she asks Aibileen for some tips, she realizes that the real story lies in the emotional lives of black women who virtually raise their white employers’ children, but who are treated by those same families as unfit to share a kitchen utensil, much less political or economic power. A.H. I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT (PG-13, 89 minutes) Sarah Jessica Parker plays Kate, a harried working mother in this insipid, unfunny and cliche-ridden film. “I Don’t Know How She Does It” stripmines every last nugget from the mother lode of maternal movie comedy, including gags about head lice, bake-sale envy and morning sickness. The balance of the story, which concerns Kate’s efforts to juggle her job, mothering and marriage in the midst of a high-stakes work assignment, is padding. In addition to across-the-board lame acting, “I Don’t Know How She Does It” boasts a bizarre worldview that seems to simultaneously sympathize with the working mother — or at least to the caricature of one — and to demonize her. Dining out can be a tough scene for vege tarians, at least those tired of Caprese sandwiches and/or overpriced chef’s salads. The lineup of restaurants participating in D.C. VegFest offers hope. In addition to hope: lectures on nutrition, animal rights and the environmental impact of our diets (such as the ominous-sounding “The Meat Crisis and Gas Prices”); vegan cooking demonstrations; and a cupcake-eating contest hosted by Sticky Fingers Bakery. I[h_[i Fh[c_[h[i On a basic level, CBS’ “A Gifted Man” is about a hotshot surgeon, Dr. Michael Holt (Patrick Wilson), who begins seeing and chatting with his recently deceased ex-wife, Anna. She doesn’t show up to help him with the pottery, as in 1990’s “Ghost,” but to make sure that he takes time from his busy schedule of serving only rich people to make sure that her clinic on the poor side of town keeps running. “Gifted” echoes any number of shows about insensitive jerks who get a cosmic kick in the pants. Expanded ‘Empire’ Steve Buscemi, shown, returns as Nucky Thompson for an allnew season of “Boardwalk Empire” (Sun., 9 p.m., HBO), which charts the rise of organized crime at the dawn of Prohibition. Though the 1920 election he successfully rigged is over, Nucky finds himself the target of a federal investigation for vote tampering — and an insurrection by those he counted among his closest allies. All the while, top mobsters wait in the wings, looking for a chance to grab a bigger piece of Nucky’s pie. (TM)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may be unusually optimistic, but that doesn’t mean that you aren’t prepared for negative developments. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Don’t take things personally. The things that are said have nothing whatsoever to do with you — directly. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Opinions must be expressed or you’ll find that no one is willing to put his or her ideas on the line. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may be going through a difficult time either at home or at the workplace, but your patience and understanding can win the day.

Yesterday’s Solution

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Don’t let yourself become too reactive when things happen that are not a part of your overall game plan. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Don’t be tempted to walk away from your work before you have made headway in all areas — which is possible, if you prioritize. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Do you feel as though you are not on solid ground? It may be that you have overreached, putting a current project at risk. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You can get your work done and still enjoy the social opportunities afforded you — but don’t misinterpret certain signs.
