Spurred by an explosion in insect populations, thousands of spiders in Aitoliko, Greece, have shrouded coastal trees and vegetation in thick webs. The blanket of sticky white extends for a few hundred yards along the shore. Experts say the number of lake flies has rocketed in humid latesummer weather. Spiders reproduced quickly to take advantage. Residents say the extensive webs have the benefit of keeping down mosquitoes. (AP)

Boxes of bananas donated to a Texas prison turned out to have nearly $18 million worth of cocaine inside. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice wrote on Facebook that the drugs were found in two pallets of bananas donated Friday because they were already ripe. Sergeants who picked up the boxes found a bundle of a white powdery substance under the bananas. In all, 540 packages of cocaine were found in 45 boxes of bananas. (AP)

The body of a man killed over 40 years ago in fighting between Greek and Turkish Cypriots was found after a researcher wondered why a fig tree was growing in an unusual location in Cyprus, the Mirror reported Thursday. Ahmet Hergune and two others died in 1974 when they were taken to a cave and dynamite was thrown after them. The bodies were discovered in 2011 because a fig seed in Hergune’s stomach had grown into a tree. (EXPRESS)

THEATER The area outside Arena Stage’s audition room is set up in the usual manner. Forms to fill out. Pencils for those who forgot to bring their own. Poop bags. So it’s not entirely business as usual. The auditions are for the role of Cheeky in “Anything Goes,” running from Nov. 2 through Dec. 23. Two dogs will actually get the part; they’ll split up the performances. Cheeky is a Pekingese in the show’s stage directions, but the casting call was open to all breeds, with the perfect dog weighing under 20 pounds, says Victor Vazquez, Arena’s casting director. “They have to be friendly with people of all races and ages and will ideally be hypoallergenic,” he says. A dog that retreats under the couch at the first sign of thunder would not be the best fit: “Just imagine 19 people tap dancing onstage,” Vazquez says. “That’s a lot of thunderous noise. It’s very important we have a dog who can

really move through that with grace and comfort and still be themselves.” When the dogs — a remarkable number of whom have their own Instagram accounts — enter the room with their parents, the first person they meet is Ashley Valm, shelter behavior manager for the Humane Rescue Alliance. She walks the dogs on a leash, picks them up and then gives them a “startle test,” in which she drops a container of wipes on the

floor. Most of the dogs glance at the source of the noise and get back to sniffing. Ellie, a terrier mix, walks over to the container to see if it’s edible. Many of the pups are dressed to impress. Onyx, out of Fairfax, sports a tie, while Burger, from Barracks Row, wears an “I [heart] Capitol Hill” bandana. Olly, a “mostly dachshund” from Adams Morgan, is naked today, but has won multiple costume contests in the past — once for

dressing up as a Georgetown Cupcake. At the end of each audition, the dog gets a Sprinkles “pupcake” and heads home to wait by the phone to hear if they’ve been cast, a decision due early next week. As the last pup leaves, it becomes clear that nerves must have gotten to one of them — a little puddle of piddle on the patio shows once again that this is no normal audition. District relaxes policy on marijuana arrests THE DISTRICT Arrests in the District for public use of marijuana will result in those who qualify receiving a citation, rather than being taken into custody, officials said Friday. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, and Police Chief Peter Newsham said all arrests for “public consumption of marijuana” must be noncustodial, if the person arrested is eligible. In the past, issuing a citation, which means a noncustodial arrest, was an option for authorities, but was not mandatory.

Officials said the new policy takes effect immediately. The mayor said the new policy would make more effective use of public safety resources. “We cherish the trust we have built between residents and the police. This policy will reduce the number of people who are taken into custody and allow us to better focus our efforts and resources on building a safer, stronger D.C.,” the mayor said. Not all people arrested for use of marijuana would be eligible for citations.

Those not eligible include juveniles, people with outstanding warrants or those who cannot be identified positively. Also included among those ineligible are people who police think will not answer the citation or people subject to another charge that does not provide for a noncustodial arrest. A person receiving a citation for use of pot in public must go to a police station for booking within 15 days, and can then choose to go to court or pay a $25 fine.

Taylor Gourmet, the D.C.based hoagie chain that opened a decade ago in the H Street Corridor, closed all of its locations Sunday after the private equity firm that owned it pulled its funding. The chain’s two Chicago locations closed Friday, and the 17 D.C.-area outlets quickly followed suit, according to a spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The company plans to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection this week, according to a source close to the company. It’s uncertain yet what kind of severance package, if any, the employees will get, the spokesman said. D.C.-based eatery CAVA will be hosting a job fair Tuesday from 9 to 11 a.m. at its Chinatown and Mosaic District locations for former Taylor employees, Washington City Paper reported. (TWP)

Va. Criminal Justice department rejects Lee County school district’s plan to arm employees

Two Maryland police officers were shot while serving a drug-related search warrant at the wrong apartment late Wednesday, officials said. The resident shot the officers as soon as they opened the door, thinking they were home invaders, authorities said. No criminal charges will be filed against the man, Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said last week. Stawinski apologized for the error and said he has halted executing search warrants until the department reviews its procedures. (AP) THE DISTRICT

Electric scooter rider fatally struck by SUV A man riding an electric scooter was killed Friday in a collision with an SUV at Dupont Circle in what officials believe is D.C.’s first fatality involving a user of a shared scooter service. The rider, Carlos Sanchez-Martin, 20, of Silver Spring, was dragged about 20 yards, according to a witness. Police said Sanchez-Martin died at a hospital shortly after the 10 a.m. incident. The driver remained at the scene, and police were investigating the cause. No charges have been filed. (TWP) MARYLAND

NRA downgrades its rating for Gov. Hogan The National Rifle Association has downgraded Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s ranking and is refusing to endorse him. The move comes after the Republican governor signed several pieces of gun control legislation. The Baltimore Sun reports that NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said Saturday that the organization now rates Hogan a “C’’ on protecting the rights of gun owners. Four years ago, the NRA rated Hogan as an “A-.” Baker said the NRA will not endorse Hogan this election as it did during his successful 2014 run for governor. (AP)

local Gun used in warehouse attack in Md. was legally purchased, police say ABERDEEN, MD. The woman who killed three people and wounded others before shooting herself to death at a Maryland drugstore warehouse had been diagnosed with a mental illness and used a legally purchased gun in the rampage, a law enforcement official said Friday. Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said the suspect, 26-year-old Snochia Moseley of

Baltimore County, had been diagnosed with a mental illness in 2016. “That’s as far as I’ll go with it,” he said, declining to give any more details about the illness. He said Moseley had become increasingly agitated in recent weeks, and relatives had been concerned for her well-being. Gahler said she used a handgun that she legally purchased in March to fire a total of 13 rounds Thursday morning and died after shooting herself in the head. Gahler identified the three fatally shot as Sunday Aguda, a 45-year-old man from Baltimore

When asked how Moseley could legally buy a gun after being diagnosed with a mental illness, officials said it had not been determined that she had a “propensity for violence to self or others.” Gahler said the motive is still a mystery and may remain so. “There’s just no way to make sense of something so senseless,” he said. “There’s still a lot of questions that we don’t know.” DAVID

Police in Maryland say an 11-yearold girl has become the fourth member of her family to die in a shooting rampage by her father, who also killed himself. Mina Kim died Thursday after being gravely wounded in the shooting Monday at the family’s Silver Spring home. The girl’s death leaves only one survivor, a 22-year-old woman who is still hospitalized. Police said Yong Mun Kim, 57, shot his wife, Sang Yeon Kim, and their two children, Mina and 10-yearold Andy. Police said he also shot the 22-year-old, his stepdaughter, then used his gun to kill himself.

Will Trump accept Rosenstein’s denials?

TAIL OF REDEMPTION

Pit bull goes from fighter to crime fighter

WASHINGTON The fate of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein could turn on whether President Trump believes the account of an exFBI official who, as Trump once asserted in a tweet, had “LIED! LIED! LIED!” Rosenstein discussed secretly recording Trump, though one person who was present at the time said Rosenstein was being sarcastic, and reportedly suggested removing the commander in chief from office. Rosenstein issued a swift denial to both claims. The revelation that the secondranking Justice Department official had even broached those ideas has created even more uncertainty for him at a time when Trump has railed against law enforcement leadership he has perceived as biased against him. The president, at a Missouri rally Friday night, said there was a “lingering stench” at the Justice Department that “we’re going to get rid of.” He didn’t name names. A key witness in the episode is Andrew McCabe, who was temporarily elevated to FBI director after Trump fired James Comey. McCabe documented conversations with senior officials, including Trump and Rosenstein, in memos that have been provided to special counsel Robert Mueller

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein denies suggesting President Trump should secretly be recorded.

as part of the Trump-Russia investigation. The discussion about possibly recording Trump occurred during a meeting with McCabe in May 2017 following Comey’s firing. Comey’s dismissal infuriated many rank-and-file agents, but the White House has said that decision was made on the Justice Department’s recommendation. A memo from McCabe also describes Rosenstein as having discussed the potential removal of the president under the Constitution. While Trump has publicly scorned Rosenstein, the president has been every bit as harsh toward McCabe, who was fired in March amid a watchdog investigation that concluded he repeatedly lied about his involvement

in a news media disclosure. Friday’s news reports raised the prospect that Trump could fire Rosenstein. Any dismissal could affect Mueller’s investigation into possible coordination between Russia and Trump’s presidential campaign. Rosenstein appointed Mueller and oversees his work. Rosenstein’s comments were first reported by The New York Times, which also said he raised the idea of using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump as unfit for office. Rosenstein denied it. “I never pursued or authorized recording the President and any suggestion that I have ever advocated for the removal of the President is absolutely false,” he said in a statement. When 3-year-old Dallas was found in 2015 on a compound in Canada’s Ontario province, he and 30 other pit bulls were chained to metal stakes, and evidence of fight training — including schedules, muzzles, sticks, steroids and suture kits — was found on the property. Few would have guessed where Dallas would end up. The dog’s sparkling demeanor is leading him to a new chapter in life: He is among the first pit bulls ever rescued from fighting to train as a police K-9. Next month, after about six weeks of training to sniff out narcotics, he is set to join the force in the southwest Virginia town of Honaker. (TWP)

Trump reverses decision to declassify documents President Trump on Friday walked back his order earlier in the week to declassify information in the ongoing probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, saying Justice Department officials and others had convinced him not to declassify it for the time being. The president’s declaration appears to indicate he is willing to let the DOJ’s inspector general review the material rather than release it publicly. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Burials begin for 224 who died after ferry capsized

3-D gun advocate accused of sex with minor is jailed

President Trump is poised to redouble his commitment to “America First” during his visit to New York this week for the United Nations meetings. Trump will stress his dedication to the primacy of U.S. interests while competing with Western allies for an advantage on trade and shining a spotlight on the threat that he says Iran poses. Ahead of his arrival, Trump declared that the world body had “not lived up to” its potential. “It’s always been surprising to me that more things aren’t resolved,” Trump said, “because you have all of these countries getting together in one location but it doesn’t seem to get there.” (AP)

Relatives wept in grief on Sunday at the mass burial in Tanzania of many of the 224 people who drowned when a ferry capsized on Lake Victoria. The overloaded boat tipped over Thursday as it got to about 55 yards from the island’s dock. People carrying their goods from a busy market day prepared to disembark, unbalancing the ferry, which turned over. Horrified fishermen and others watched from the shore. No further survivors were likely to be found and search efforts had ended, Defense Minister Venance Mabeyo said. He said officials would continue working to identify the dead. (AP)

The owner of a Texas company that sells blueprints to make untraceable 3-D printed guns was back in the U.S. on Sunday after being arrested in Taiwan, where police said he flew after learning he was being investigated for allegedly having sex with an underage girl. The U.S. Marshals Service said 30-year-old Cody Wilson was booked into Harris County Jail in Houston early Sunday and was being held on $150,000 bond. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney yet. He was arrested by local police Friday at a hotel in Taiwan. He is facing sexual assault charges in Austin, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. (AP)

GOP, the party of men? Kavanaugh fight shows the gulf between the parties as they navigate the #MeToo movement

Trump details plan to restrict new green cards

JABIN BOTSFORD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS The Republican Party’s fight to save President Trump’s embattled Supreme Court nominee amid allegations of sexual assault has surfaced deep anxieties over the hypermasculine mindset that has come to define the GOP in the nation’s roiling gender debate. The images are striking: The specter of Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee — all 11 of them men — questioning U.S. Appeals Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s female accuser. A senior GOP aide working on the confirmation resigning amid his own sexual harassment allegations. A viral photo of “women for Kavanaugh” featuring more men than women. A South Carolina Republican congressman making a crude joke about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg being groped by Abraham Lincoln. And then there is the party’s id, Trump, who as a candidate denied more than a dozen accusations of sexual assault and harassment and sought to silence and retaliate against his accusers — and who as president has defended one accused man after another. The moment brings into sharp relief the gulf that has emerged between the two political parties as they navigate America’s cultural reckoning on sexual assault. Democrats have embraced the #MeToo movement to galvanize female voters and attempt to lift scores of female candidates to victory in November’s midterm elections. By contrast, strategists in both parties say Trump’s agenda and style are undoing years of often painstaking work by Republican leaders to court more female and

minority voters. “The antipathy to Trump from women — college-educated, white, suburban women — transcends anything I’ve ever seen in politics,” GOP strategist Alex Castellanos said. “… Women are coming out to vote against Donald Trump because they see him as a culturally regressive force that would undo the women’s march to equality.” Since Trump’s election, the percentage of women who say they lean toward the Republican Party is now 32 percent, down from 35 percent in 2016 and an average of 37 percent between 2010 and 2017, according to PostABC News polling. The fault lines were evident last week when Trump spoke out about the Kavanaugh episode by saying the real victim is the federal judge, whom Christine Blasey Ford accuses of sexually assaulting her when he was 17, and attacking Ford’s credibility. The president’s comments made some Republicans

Kavanaugh’s accuser to testify Thursday The Senate Judiciary Committee has committed to a public hearing Thursday to question Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, according to people familiar with the deal the parties struck Sunday. “We committed to moving forward with an open hearing on Thursday Sept. 27 at 10 a.m.,” Ford’s attorneys said in a statement, noting that their client had agreed to appear despite the committee’s refusal to let her speak after Kavanaugh’s testimony or to interview other people she said were present at the party where she alleges Kavanaugh assaulted her in the early 1980s. (TWP)

plainly uncomfortable; Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, called them “appalling.” “Everything about this kind of encapsulates in one moment the problem the Republican Party has with women, ranging from

it being male-dominated — with Trump’s Cabinet and the Republican leadership in Congress — to issues of dismissing women who experienced harassment and assault with typical kinds of victim-blaming,” Democratic pollster Anna Greenberg said. Trump’s White House staff and Cabinet are overwhelmingly male, though the president does regularly consult a trio of West Wing women: daughter and senior adviser Ivanka Trump, counselor Kellyanne Conway and press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. It is illustrative of the predominance of men in the GOP that after Ford’s allegations were reported last week, the spotlight immediately turned to two female senators: Collins and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. “This should be a concern for everybody,” Sen. Mazie Hirono, DHawaii said. “Why is it incumbent on women to care that someone has made this kind of very credible allegation?” KAROUN DEMIRJIAN AND EMMA BROWN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS The Trump administration has proposed rules that could deny green cards to immigrants if they use Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers and other forms of public assistance. Federal law already requires those seeking green cards to prove they will not be a burden — or “public charge” — but the new rules detail a broad range of programs that could disqualify them. The Department of Homeland Security said Saturday that current and past receipt of certain public benefits above thresholds would be considered “a heavily weighed negative factor” in granting green cards as well as temporary stays. The proposal “will clearly define long-standing law to ensure that those seeking to enter and remain in the U.S. either temporarily or permanently can support themselves financially and will not be reliant on public benefits,” the department said. The 447-page proposal published on the department’s website will appear in the Federal Register “in the coming weeks,” triggering a 60-day public comment period before it takes effect. Immigrant advocacy groups said people may avoid or withdraw from public aid programs even at the risk of losing shelter and suffering deteriorating health because they worry they will be denied visas. Rouhani says American ally was responsible for shooting that killed 25 AHVAZ, IRAN Iran’s president on Sunday accused an unnamed U.S.-allied country in the Persian Gulf of being behind a terror attack on a military parade that killed 25 people and wounded 60, further raising regional tensions. Hassan Rouhani’s comments

came as Iran’s Foreign Ministry also summoned Western diplomats over their allegedly providing havens for the Arab separatists who claimed Saturday’s attacks in the southwestern city of Ahvaz. The Iranian moves, as well as promises of revenge by Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard, come as the country already faces turmoil in the wake of the American withdrawal from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.

Saturday’s attack, in which militants disguised as soldiers opened fire on an annual Iranian military parade in Ahvaz, was the deadliest attack in the country in nearly a decade. drive aided by two pass interference penalties gave the Redskins a 14-0 lead before the end of the first quarter. Washington’s third scoring drive was one of its most impressive this season. The Redskins took over on their own 2-yard line, but on third down Smith hit Reed with a 34-yard pass. On the next play, Peterson cut to his right and ran down the sideline for 41 yards. Smith converted another third down with a 7-yard scramble, then found Jamison Crowder for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Rodgers answered with a 64yard bomb to Geronimo Allison that kept Green Bay close, but Smith and the Redskins’ deep game had more to do before halftime. Washington stormed down the field again with a 50-yard pass to Davis that set up another short Peterson touchdown and gave Washington a 28-10 lead that the Packers couldn’t overcome. Packers linebacker Clay Matthews reacts to a penalty that negated his sack.

A 21-9 loss to Indianapolis last week had left many questions about whether quarterback Alex Smith and the team’s receivers are good enough for this team to be a contender in the NFC East. On Sunday, Smith efficiently silenced those questions with 220 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 completions. Tight ends Vernon Davis and Jordan Reed combined for 135 yards receiving. Adrian Peterson ran for 120 yards and two more scores.

Monday Night Football: Steelers at Buccaneers (8:15, ESPN)

Heading into its bye week, Washington (2-1) is tied for first place in the NFC East with the Super Bowl champion Eagles. The Redskins began the game Sunday determined to show they could take chances on offense. On their opening drive, Smith drilled receiver Paul Richardson Jr. running free down the right side for a long pass the receiver dove to catch and then rolled into the end zone for a 46-yard touchdown. A 2-yard Peterson TD run on a

For defense, win appears legitimizing Entering Sunday’s win over the Packers, Washington led the NFL in total defense (247 yards per game allowed) and passing defense (161) and was second in average points allowed (13.5). Those numbers felt a little hollow because the season is young, and the opposition — a rebuilt Arizona team that looks awful so far and a Colts squad riding rusty QB Andrew Luck — didn’t seem trustworthy. The presence of Packers QB Aaron Rodgers made this week feel different, even if he is hobbled by a knee sprain. The Packers cut the deficit to 11 with its first drive of the second half, but the Redskins shut them out from then on. Daron Payne recorded his first sack (above), Fabian Moreau forced a fumble and Washington stifled any magic Rodgers may have had left on tap.

Shredded Cheeseheads

REDSKINS 31, PACKERS 17 Inside FedEx Field on Sunday, the clock didn’t seem to move fast enough for Washington. A lead built behind an offense that had finally erupted suddenly seemed precarious as Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers stood in the rain on muddy turf and threatened yet another of his miraculous comebacks. But with a bulky brace on his right knee and the grass sluggish beneath his feet, Rodgers was unable to lead the Packers to overcome an 11-point deficit, and for the Redskins, their 31-17 win must have felt like a relief as much as a statement. Rodgers threw everything he had at them in the second half, ending the game with 265 passing yards and two touchdowns. Still, Washington held tough. The fact that Rodgers was unable to produce yet another comeback overshadowed a dominant first half for a Redskins offense that, until Sunday, had not shown how complete it can be this year.

Bills rookie quarterback Josh Allen accounted for three touchdowns in his first road start in the NFL as the Bills got their first win. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins had three turnovers, including two fumbles on his first two possessions. Buffalo (1-2) turned those turnovers into 10 points. Allen, the No. 7 overall pick out of Wyoming, completed 15 of 22 passes for 196 yards, including a 26-yard TD pass to tight end Jason Croom. Allen also ran for two scores, beginning with a 10-yard TD on the opening drive, for a Buffalo team missing LeSean McCoy (ribs). Cousins was sacked four times, and Minnesota fell to 1-1-1. (AP)

Quarterback Drew Brees’ 1-yard run capped an 80-yard drive to open overtime that lifted the Saints to a win in Atlanta on Sunday. Brees’ run came after an apparent 3-yard TD pass to Alvin Kamara was overturned because Kamara’s knee was ruled down. New Orleans moved to 2-1 on the same day that Brees, 39, broke the NFL record for career completions. Brees forced OT with a 7-yard scoring run after throwing for three scores. He had 396 yards passing. Kamara had 15 catches for 124 yards and ran for 66 yards. Matt Ryan threw five TD passes for Atlanta (1-2), including three to rookie Calvin Ridley. (AP)

Carson Wentz threw a touchdown pass on his first drive in nine months, Wendell Smallwood ran in the go-ahead score from the 4-yard line with 3:01 left and the Eagles held on to win Sunday in Philadelphia. Adam Vinatieri tied Morten Andersen’s career record of 565 field goals by hitting three kicks, but the Colts (1-2) couldn’t take advantage of a fumble and an interception by Wentz inside the 20 in the second half. Philadelphia (2-1) needed two stops against Andrew Luck in the final 90 seconds to win. Playing his first game since he tore two ligaments in his left knee on Dec. 10, Wentz was 25 of 37 for 255 yards. (AP)

GOLF The comeback that not even Tiger Woods saw coming led to a chaotic celebration that golf hadn’t seen, even in his heyday. Woods delivered the perfect ending to his amazing return from four back surgeries with a performance Sunday in Atlanta that felt like old times. He left his competition feeling hopeless as he built a five-shot lead early and hung on to win the Tour Championship. Woods raised both arms over his head after he tapped in for par and a 1-over 71 for a two-shot victory over Billy Horschel, the 80th victory of his PGA Tour career and his first in more than five years — 1,876 days, to be exact. An 11-under 269 gave Woods $1.62 million, along with a $3 million bonus for finishing second in the FedEx Cup. “It was a grind out there,” Woods said. “I loved every bit of it.” One year ago, Woods was still waiting for his lower back to fuse and wasn’t sure he could ever play again. He spoke of being unable to get off the couch to watch his kids play soccer. He was becoming a legend only in

The only disappointment for Woods on Sunday — a minor one — was realizing as he came down the 18th that Justin Rose had made birdie to finish in a three-way tie for fourth, which gave Rose the FedEx Cup and the $10 million bonus. Without that birdie, Woods would have won his third FedEx Cup title after starting at No. 20 going into the Tour Championship. “Congrats, Rosie,” Woods told him. “World No. 1, hell of a season.” Actually, former world No. 1 for Rose. MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1

A fantastical dive into the subconscious TV REVIEW “Maniac,” Netflix’s retro-futuristic rumination on subconscious love, comes from creator Patrick Somerville (“The Leftovers”) and director Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”) bearing some of the telltale hipster traits of boutique filmmaking. There’s a fusion here between modern melancholia and those romps where potential lovers keep encountering each other in skips through time. It sounds tedious but works somewhat splendidly, once the series gets going. Style is slightly ahead of substance here, as Somerville and Fukunaga spend an impressive amount of energy introducing us to an imagined quasi-contemporary society that clings to a thrift-store aesthetic. In this glum, beige-computer future/ past, we meet Owen (Jonah Hill) and Annie (Emma Stone), who both volunteer to participate

8 p.m. today on CBS

The megahit sitcom kicks off its 12th and final season with Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) on their honeymoon after finally tying the knot, while Raj (Kunal Nayyar) starts a Twitter war with Neil deGrasse Tyson.

NETFLIX

The Netflix miniseries ‘Maniac’ makes for a stylish sci-fi romance

in a top-secret, three-day drug trial at a highly guarded facility. Owen and Annie are assigned to a test group that will be dosed with three drugs, while an artificially intelligent computer monitors their subconscious activities. The trial is overseen by an officious scientist, Dr. Fujita (Sonoya Mizuno), who is under great pressure to deliver on the trial’s promise: a cure for mental illness or other afflictions of the mind, such as grief or depression. The computer, however, starts to act up, sending Dr. Fujita to track down its creator, Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux), to try to keep the experiment on track. For reasons that would complicate this already bizarre recap, the computer melds Owen’s and Annie’s subconscious experiences together, which means they are essentially having the same dreams. That is where “Maniac’s” real fun begins. Whatever downbeat message “Maniac” might have intended to convey about pharmaceutical attempts to treat the human condition gets lost in the

‘The Big Bang Theory’

In “Maniac,” Jonah Hill and Emma Stone play patients who participate in a pharmaceutical trial with top-secret tests and colorful lighting choices.

The fools who dream “Maniac” allows lead actors Jonah Hill and Emma Stone to play different characters over a variety of fantastical dream sequences. In one dream, they are a married Long Island couple living in a 1980s-like suburb. Other dreams play out like science-fiction B-movies and Tolkienesque misadventures in a version of Middle Earth. H.S.

fact that a good time is being had by all — Hill and Stone are terrifically capable at conveying the series’ many moods. There is a sense toward the

end that Somerville, Fukunaga, et al. are not sure whether they want to leave things on a note of romance or caution. There’s also a sense that we are in a years-long process of figuring out the uncharted territory that separates a film from a series. Could this have been a twohour movie? Or does it gain something as 10 episodes? (The full series came out Friday.) We’re told that supercomputers will notice whether we watch through the entire series, and then aggregate the data accordingly. Which means, in a way, that Netflix is making lab rats of us all.

Jeffrey Wright stars in the Netflix original film about a man who ventures into the Alaskan wilderness to hunt three wolves that killed a local boy, only to start unraveling a dark mystery lurking beneath the surface.

The family melodrama’s third season will follow storylines including Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) time in Vietnam and the strained marriage between Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson). (EXPRESS)

The domestic box office take for “The House With a Clock in Its Walls” this past weekend, as the fantasy film opened at No. 1 and exceeded studio expectations. Michael Moore’s Donald Trump-focused documentary “Fahrenheit 11/9” made just $3.1 million after it had been predicted to open with $5 million to $8 million. “Life Itself,” a drama from “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman, bombed with $2.1 million in its opening weekend. “American Vandal was a wonderful spoof of the true-crime genre: Two students at fictional Hanover High did a hard-nosed investigation to find the rogue who — um, how to put this in a family publication — spray-painted pictures of a male member here, there and everywhere. How do you follow that up?

In its second season, now streaming on Netflix, the mockumentary tackles the case of the Turd Burglar, who terrorizes a Catholic high school by slipping a laxative into cafeteria lemonade, causing innocent kids to poop their pants. A cop asks a student: “You think poop is funny? If I may answer — you betcha! The premise is over-the-top, but the show itself is a finely tuned replica of popular

“Love to own my opponent by posting video of them getting uproarious applause for opposing extrajudicial killings of black men by white cops.” @SOCIALISTDOGMOM, mocking Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for sharing a video of his Democratic opponent Beto O’Rourke condemning the killing of Botham Shem Jean, who was shot to death by a white offduty police officer in Dallas who said she entered his apartment by mistake. Many read Cruz’s tweet as an explicit appeal to racist voters.

“Because my boyfriend told me he would actually kill me if I left him or if I told anyone and when someone beats you, you believe them.” @LIZZWINSTEAD, adding her story

to #WhyIDidntReport, a response to those blasting Christine Blasey Ford — who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of assaulting her decades ago — for not coming forward earlier. Survivors used the hashtag to explain why they didn’t report their own assault.

“This ad has to have the biggest wow moment of any political ad I’ve ever seen.” @JOEPERTICONE, tweeting about a set of campaign ads for David Brill, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona. The ads show six of Republican Rep. Paul Gosar’s siblings blasting his policies and endorsing Brill. Gosar has called his siblings “disgruntled Hillary supporters” and said, “You can’t pick your family.”

“I hope that Nick Viall apologizes. Other people’s bodies aren’t any of his business and certainly aren’t there for him to mock.” @CCHDUFF, blasting the former “Bachelor” for Instagram videos he posted during the iHeart Music Festival. In one video, Viall mocks an overweight man in a swimsuit; in another, he mocks a woman’s outfit. Viall later deleted the videos.

“Party City hacked into my messages to make this costume ... I’m suing.” @ERRIS_LOVELY, reacting to a Party City Halloween costume meant to represent “ghosting,” where someone abruptly cuts off communication with a romantic prospect rather than outright turning them down. The costume had a lot of people recalling when they were ghosted, as well as requesting a version for men.
