Vienna airport spokesman Peter Kleemann told the Austria Press Agency on Monday that a dense swarm of bats descended on one of the airport’s runways for about 45 minutes last Wednesday evening. As a safety precaution, another runway was used for takeoffs and landings, affecting four flights and causing a few slight delays. Airport firefighters saw off the mammals by spraying a fine mist of water over the runway. (AP)

A baby alpaca in Cook, Wash., has been named “Lucky” after his mother saved him from a cougar attack, The Oregonian reported Monday. Surveillance video shows the big cat grabbing the 15-pound cria (as baby alpacas are called) at Cedar Creek Alpaca Farm and running off with it. But the mother alpaca gives chase and manages to frighten off the cougar. Lucky survived and the farm has started a GoFundMe for his vet bills. (EXPRESS)

Copperhead — er, heads? ANIMALS Imagine trying to eat if you had two heads and mouths to feed on one body. Such was the dilemma for a two-headed copperhead snake recently discovered in a yard in Woodbridge, Va. The snake was found a week ago, and pictures of it were sent and posted to Facebook of a wildlife expert. Such two-headed snakes are “exceptionally rare,” mainly because they don’t live very long, a Virginia herpetologist JD Kleopfer said on Facebook. The snake was caught and taken to a wildlife expert with experience in breeding and raising vipers, officials said. Copperheads are venomous. But herpetologists got a chance to look at it and make some observations on the rare find. In his Facebook post, Kleopfer said the left head had the more dominant esophagus and the right head had a more developed throat for eating. The left side, herpetological experts said, was “generally more active and

responsive to stimulus.” After doing radiographs, experts found that the snake has one heart and one set of lungs. “Based on the anatomy, it would be better for the right head to eat, but it may be a challenge since the left head appears more dominant,” experts at the Wildlife Center of Virginia said in a news release. Kleopfer said officials hope the rare snake will eventually be donated to a zoo and put on exhibit.
Two heads aren’t better Experts said two-headed snakes are like human conjoined twins, in that the condition occurs when an embryo starts to divide into identical twins but stops. It is possible to separate two-headed snakes, which can learn to be independent, experts said. Two-headed snakes fight over which head swallows the prey. The snakes also have trouble deciding which way to go, and often can’t respond quickly when they are attacked. (TWP)
Rich Perry, who runs a wildlife removal company — Virginia Wildlife Management and Control in Powhatan, Va. — said he helped identify the snake. Perry said the woman found the snake in her front yard near a bush and “had no idea what it was.” “She was afraid it would get away and having kids and pets, they were going to get bit,” Perry said. She scooped it up in a plastic bin, according to Perry, took a picture and posted it to her neighborhood listserv, asking if anyone could identify it. Someone on that group saw the picture and sent it to Perry, who runs a 24-hour hotline that helps identify snakes. When he saw it, Perry said, he knew it was a venomous copperhead. “It was absolutely incredible,” Perry said. He said he’s dealt with “hundreds of snakes every year” in his 40 years in the wildlife removal business, but has never seen anything like this. “It was a fluke thing. Just a freak of nature,” Perry said. Perry said at least six people, including the owner of a private museum, have said they would pay for the two-headed snake because it is so rare. Hogan and Jealous spar in lone governor debate

‘Psychic’ gets 6 years after stealing $340K
Maryland’s governor has strong lead in polls for election in 6 weeks

MARYLAND Democrat Ben Jealous used every chance he could get to challenge Republican Gov. Larry Hogan as a politician with no plans for the future on Monday in the only debate of the Maryland’s governor’s race, while Hogan said the state is better off after his first term. Jealous and Hogan battled the whole hour over the economy, education, guns, health care, transportation and drug addiction during the debate at Maryland Public Television. The two often talked over each other as one attacked the other. Jealous criticized the governor for shortchanging school funding, failing the state’s largest city of Baltimore on transportation needs and neglecting to outline plans about what he would do to address important concerns. Jealous took issue with Hogan’s contention that the state’s economy has fared much better during his tenure. “You taking credit for an economy that’s slightly better years after the end of the recession in some places, not all, is like taking credit for the sun rising, sir,” Jealous said. “Let’s run on your record, not on mythology.” Hogan characterized his opponent’s proposals, such as a Medicare-for-all health care system, as unaffordable. Throughout the

debate, Hogan said his opponent’s attacks were based on fantasy. “It’s just like you’re living in a dream world,” Hogan said. Jealous has been behind in recent polls, and he is far behind Hogan in fundraising. A Goucher College poll released last week showed Hoga n leading by 22 percentage points, 54 percent to 32 percent. The poll of 831 Maryland adults had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points. The election will be Nov. 6. Both candidates were asked how they will try to stem gun violence. Fatal shootings have made national headlines in the state this year, including a rampage at the Capital-Gazette newspaper that left five dead and a shooting at a drugstore warehouse that left
four dead last week. Jealous, who noted his “F’’ rating from the National Rifle Association, said Maryland must stop the flow of illegal guns into the state and treat gun violence as a public health crisis. “There’s a public mental health crisis, and we have to make sure that people get the mental health care that they need,” Jealous said. Hogan noted his signing of the state’s red flag law, which takes effect next week. It enables families and law enforcement to ask courts for an order to temporarily restrict gun access to people found to be a risk to themselves or others. “This is a tragedy that we’re going to have to keep focused on,” Hogan said. Capital Weather Gang has all kinds of stats that confirm what is obvious to Washingtonians: This month is one of the cloudiest and wettest Septembers that D.C. has ever seen. The month is doing more than its fair share to put 2018 in the running for Washington’s wettest year on record. You’re forgiven if you’re fed up with it. Through Sunday, Washington had posted 8.25 inches of rain for the month, which is 5.44 inches above normal and ranks fifth-most on record (through Sunday). Even on days when it hasn’t rained, stuck weather systems have frequently cast a bleak shadow over the region. Through Monday, we’ve compiled 14 cloudy days, seven partly cloudy days and just three sunny days. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

It wasn’t so much the artwork itself that puzzled inspectors at Dulles airport this month, but where it was applied: to the shells of turtles. Customs reported a family of American citizens returning from China declared four baby turtles with painted backs. An official said he was in an area that wasn’t severely impacted by fire. The complex is in the 900 block of Fifth Street SE. The discovery shocked District officials after what had been portrayed as the successful evacuations of about 132 older residents as a fire burned for hours along the roof and upper floor. Firefighters, police officers, Marines from a nearby base and bystanders rushed inside to help get residents to safety, some of whom were carried down on ladders. Bowser said an investigation is underway to determine how the man was missed by both firefighters who conducted searches in the building and a management company. The man was taken to a hospital with injuries deemed not to be life-threatening, officials said. Bowser said the man was found by crews hired by the complex owner to ensure the building’s structural integrity. Fire investigators have not yet been able to get inside the Arthur Capper Senior Public Housing complex near the Navy Yard in Southeast. An engineer said at a Monday news conference that the man shouted out when he heard people outside his second-floor apartment. Crews pried open his door and the mayor said he was found

METRORAIL If Mitchell Sheffield craved an ice cream cone after a hot day of helping out on his family’s farm back in Donalsonville, Ga., he’d jump into his pickup truck. In Donalsonville, a town of about 2,600 near the Florida border, the nearest place to get a cone is 21 miles away, in slightly bigger Bainbridge. Instead of driving past vast farmlands, Sheffield, 22, was at Union Station to head to Metro
Center and Presidential Scoops. It’s September, and as happens each year, one group of interns has left town, replaced by a new group of fresh faces, many feeling like Sheffield — far from home. While there is no official count of the number of interns here, 800 interns like Sheffield are currently renting apartments from Washington Intern Student Housing alone, where about 2,400 a year find housing. She said she recently tried to take Metro from Union Station to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. But she got off at the wrong station and ended up lost — she’s still not sure where, but it was a long walk to the museum. Sheffield and Williams had come to Washington wanting to see something different. Slowly, they seem to be figuring it out. NORRISTOWN, PA. Declaring Bill Cosby doesn’t deserve a free pass because of his advanced age, prosecutors on Monday asked a judge to sentence the comedian to five to 10 years in prison for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman, while the defense argued that he is too old and helpless to do time behind bars. “What does an 81-year-old man do in prison?” defense attorney Joseph Green asked on Day One of the sentencing hearing for Cosby, who is legally blind and dependent on others. “How does he fight off the people who are trying to extort him, or walk to the mess hall?” Green suggested that Cosby instead be put on something akin to house arrest. Montgomery County (Pa.) District Attorney Kevin Steele said he has no doubt Cosby would commit another such offense if given the opportunity, warning that Cosby seemingly gets a sexual thrill out of slipping women drugs and assaulting them. “So to say that he’s too old to do that — to say that he should get a pass, because it’s taken this long to catch up to what he’s done?” Steele said, his voice rising. “What they’re asking for is a ‘get out of jail free’ card.”
WATER RESCUE
Bill Cosby arrives Monday for the first day of his sentencing hearing. He was convicted in April of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand.
Judge Steven O’Neill is expected to sentence Cosby today. Cosby was convicted in April of violating former Temple University women’s basketball administrator Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia mansion in 2004. “The jury heard me. Mr. Cosby heard me. Now all I am asking for is justice as the court sees fit,” said Constand, who submitted a longer victim-impact statement. Cosby’s three charges carry up to 10 years in prison each, but both sides agreed to merge them because they stemmed from the same encounter. State sentencing guidelines call for about one to four years behind bars on the combined charge.
The judge is also expected to decide whether to declare Cosby a “sexually violent predator,” which would make him subject to mandatory lifetime counseling and community notification of his whereabouts. Cosby will be given the opportunity to speak in court before he is sentenced. More than 60 women have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct. At least two of those women, Lise-Lotte Lublin and former model Janice Dickinson, were among those in the courtroom for the start of the sentencing. Victims of sexual assault are not typically identified unless they come forward publicly. MARYCLAIRE DALE AND MICHAEL R. SISAK (AP)
An Indonesian teenager survived 49 days adrift at sea after the wooden fish trap he was employed to mind slipped its moorings. Aldi Novel Adilang, 19, said Monday that he turned on a lamp every time he sighted another ship and can’t remember how many passed by “unaware of my ordeal.” Adilang said he ran out of food within a week and survived on fish and seawater he filtered through his clothes. The Indonesian Consulate in Osaka, Japan, said he was rescued by a Panamanian-flagged vessel off Guam on Aug. 31, about 1,200 miles from his original location. He worked as a lamp lighter on a rompong — a wooden raft with a hut on top that’s illuminated at night to attract fish. Rosenstein stuck in limbo Deputy AG keeps job for now; will meet with Trump on Thursday
MARK WILSON (GETTY IMAGES)
POLITICS The White House delayed until at least Thursday a decision on the fate of Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department official overseeing the Trump-Russia investigation, following chaotic hours of breathless and sometimes conflicting reports anticipating his imminent departure. His future hanging in the balance over revelations that he had discussed possibly secretly recording the president, Rosenstein expected to be fired as he headed for the White House on Monday for what was later described as a prescheduled meeting. Instead, the White House said that Rosenstein and Trump would meet Thursday after the president’s return to Washington, suggesting the deputy attorney general may be in his job for at least several more days. Any termination or resignation would have immediate implications for special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of possible collaboration between Russia and the Trump campaign before the 2016 election. Rosenstein appointed Mueller and oversees his investigation. Rosenstein and Trump, who is in New York for a U.N. meeting, had an extended conversation to discuss recent news stories about negative comments Rosenstein is reported to have made last year about the president,

said White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The deputy attorney general was reported as having discussed possibly secretly recording the president and invoking the Constitution to have the Cabinet remove him from office. The Justice Department issued two statements from Rosenstein denying the remarks and released

a separate statement from someone who said he recalled the recording comment but insisted that it was meant sarcastically. As Trump mulled Rosenstein’s fate and consulted on how to respond, Rosenstein was summoned to the West Wing on Friday evening by White House chief of staff John Kelly. He also spoke with White
House counsel Don McGahn over the weekend to say he was considering resigning, according to a person familiar with the conversation. Despite his “You’re fired!” tagline from his reality TV days, the president has shown himself reluctant to directly fire aides himself. While his White House has been marked by unprecedented staff turnover, Trump has often left the task to deputies, including Kelly. Trump has also publicly and privately shamed staffers, pushing them to resign of their own volition. Congressional Republicans, Democrats and some Trump aides have warned for months that the president shouldn’t fire Rosenstein, saying such a move could lead to impeachment proceedings if the Democrats retake the House in the upcoming midterms. Were Rosenstein to be forced out, Solicitor General Noel Francisco, the highest-ranking Senate-confirmed official below Rosenstein in the Justice Department, would take control of the Mueller investigation. Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, whose private memos document comments made by Rosenstein, said Monday he was concerned that a Rosenstein departure would put the investigation at risk. In a statement, McCabe said: “There is nothing more important to the integrity of law enforcement and the rule of law than protecting the investigation of special counsel Mueller.” ZEKE MILLER AND ERIC TUCKER (AP)

Not just salaries: Pay gap extends to stock options Data from the U.S. Census Bureau has consistently shown that men out-earn women when it comes to salaries. But new research suggests the gender pay gap extends beyond traditional forms of compensation to include a practice common among startups, particularly in the tech industry: The offer of stock options, or equity. For every $1 in company equity held by men, women hold 47 cents, according to a study released last week by Carta, a Silicon Valley firm that helps startups manage their equity shares. The study finds that women tend to be disadvantaged in the amount of equity they hold at almost every stage of a new startup’s life. The imbalance Carta found in an analysis of roughly 180,000 workers and entrepreneurs across 6,000 companies suggests women are being left behind as men reap the often considerable rewards of equity. Despite accounting for 35 percent of the equity-holders in Carta’s study, women held just 20 percent of the total value of equity across the firms. Meanwhile, the stock compensation picture is even bleaker for female startup founders. On average, the study found that male founders each hold nearly $2.2 million worth of company equity, compared with about $858,000 for each woman. BRIAN FUNG

Paralyzed patients now able to walk HEALTH Three people whose legs were paralyzed for years can stand and take steps again thanks to an electrical implant that zaps the injured spinal cord — along with months of intense rehab, researchers reported Monday. The milestone, reported by two teams of scientists working separately, isn’t a cure. The patients walk only with assistance — holding onto a rolling walker or with other help to keep their balance. Switch off the spinal stimulator and they no longer can voluntarily move their legs. But during one physical therapy session at the Mayo Clinic, 29-year-old Jered Chinnock moved back and forth enough to cover about the length of a football field. “The walking side of it isn’t something where I just leave my wheelchair behind and away I go,” Chinnock, of Tomah, Wis., told The Associated Press. But, “there is the hopeful side of, maybe I’ll gain that — where I can leave the wheelchair behind, even if it is to walk to the refrigerator.” The work is part of a quest to help people with spinal cord injuries regain function, and specialists say while it’s only been attempted in a few people, it’s a promising approach that needs more study. Severe spinal cord injuries leave the brain’s “get moving” instructions unable to reach the
nerves that activate muscles. Researchers have tried other technologies, such as encasing patients in robotic-like exoskeletons or implanting muscle stimulators, to help move paralyzed limbs. With the new approach, the three patients are taking steps under their own power — intentionally moving, according to the reports published Monday by Nature Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine. How does it work? One theory: Circuits of nerves below the injury site are dormant, but still living. Applying electrical current, in customized patterns, could wake up some of those circuits and, with rigorous rehab to revive the rusty connections, eventually enable them to receive simple commands. “Recovery can happen if you have the right circumstances,” said University of Louisville professor Susan Harkema, who co-authored the New England Journal study. The spinal cord “relearns to do things, not as well as it did before, but it can function.” Dr. Kendall Lee, a Mayo neurosurgeon who treated Chinnock and co-authored the Nature Medicine report, said: “This study gives hope to people who are faced with paralysis that functional control may be possible.” Four years ago, Harkema’s team made headlines when a few patients implanted with spinal stimulators were able to wiggle their toes, move their legs and briefly stand. But they didn’t walk. Lee and Kristin Zhao, who directs Mayo’s assistive and

43 weeks of intense physical therapy and stimulator adjustments. At first, trainers positioned his knees and hips to help him stand, swing his legs and shift his weight on a treadmill. But eventually, watching in a mirror, he learned to move his legs and propel himself forward with a walker. He can tell his therapists when he’s going to start, stop or speed up, Zhao said: “It’s very much a thoughtful, intentional movement.” The approach will need larger and longer studies not just to see if it can help other patients but to delineate risks. It’s also not known how much such care would cost, as researchers work to improve the stimulators. LAURAN NEERGAARD (AP)
MOSCOW Russia said Monday it would equip Syria with sophisticated air defense systems, a move that could worsen a rift with Israel by limiting its ability to bomb across its northern border. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Moscow would send Russia’s powerful S-300 ground-to-air missile systems to Syria, a longtime ally, in the next two weeks. Israel, which has repeatedly bombed Iranian targets in Syria, has long opposed such deliveries, and Russia until now has refrained from supplying the weapons. But the downing last week of a Russian reconnaissance plane with 15 service members aboard changed the dynamic. The plane was shot down by a Syrian missile, but Russia faulted Israel for the crash because an Israeli fighter jet allegedly had used the Russian plane as a screen against Syria’s air defenses. Israel, by contrast, said that its air force had not violated any agreements with Russia and that Israeli jets had already returned to Israeli airspace when the missiles were launched. The crash was one of the deadliest incidents for regular Russian service members in the Syrian war. Shoigu said Russia also will jam military aircraft communications in the airspace next to Syria over the Mediterranean Sea while upgrading Syria’s air defense command systems. GOP all in on Kavanaugh
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., returns to his office after speaking Monday on the Senate floor about Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

ALEX BRANDON (AP)
POLITICS Republicans thundered into an all-out campaign to save Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination Monday as a second woman accused him of a long-ago sexual assault. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats of a “smear campaign,” Kavanaugh himself complained of “smears, pure and simple” and President Trump dismissed allegations against his nominee as “totally political.” McConnell said the Senate would vote soon on confirmation of the 53-year old appellate court judge. Kavanaugh wrote to leaders of the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, “I will not be intimidated into withdrawing from the process. ... The coordinated effort to destroy my good name will not drive me out.” Minutes later, McConnell angrily declared on the Senate floor that Democrats have thrown “all the mud they could manufacture” at Kavanaugh. He said a hearing on the claims of Kavanaugh’s first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, would occur as scheduled Thursday and the full Senate would vote on his nomination shortly thereafter, though he did not set a date. Ford has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a party when they were teenagers. Kavanaugh denies the accusation. Hours earlier, Trump led the defense of his embattled nominee against the latest allegation of sexual misconduct, calling the accusations against him “totally political.” The combative tone by Kavanaugh and his GOP supporters came a day after a second allegation emerged. That accusation, in a report by The New Yorker

Yale Law School students protested Monday in Washington and Connecticut, opposing the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. More than 100 students traveled to D.C. to protest at the Supreme Court and to meet with senators, while others staged a sit-in at the law school. More than 30 professors canceled classes Monday. Activists and organizers protested in various spots in Washington as well. The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement that 128 people were arrested and charged with unlawfully demonstrating. Kavanaugh’s nomination. Trump, at the United Nations for his second General Assembly meeting, called the allegations unfair and unsubstantiated, made by accusers who come “out of the woodwork.” He also questioned the political motivations of the attorneys representing the women, saying “you should look into the lawyers doing the representation.” O n K ava n au g h , T r u mp stressed: “I am with him all the way.” The new accusation from a woman named Deborah Ramirez landed late Sunday in a report from The New Yorker. She recalled that during the 1983-84 school year at Yale University, Kavanaugh exposed himself at a drunken dormitory party, thrust his penis in her face, and caused her to touch it without her consent as she pushed him away. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee said they would investigate Ramirez’s accusation. The accusation from Ramirez raises the stakes further for a dramatic showdown Thursday, as Kavanaugh and Ford testify in public about an incident she characterizes as attempted rape — and that he says simply never happened. Kavanaugh’s nomination hangs precariously. A handful of senators in both parties remain undecided on his nomination. Defections among Republicans would likely block his path to the Supreme Court. The White House is approaching Ford’s potential testimony with trepidation, nervous that an emotional appearance might not only damage Kavanaugh’s chances but also further energize female voters to turn out against Republicans in November. UNITED NATIONS President Trump raised hopes at the United Nations on Monday that a second meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un could occur “quite soon,” striking a conciliatory tone one year after he used his debut at the U.N. to deride Kim as “Little Rocket Man.” Trump praised Kim as “very open” and “terrific,” despite the glacial pace of progress toward denuclearization. U.S. officials defended Trump’s strategy of engagement with the erstwhile pariah state as he embarked on several days of meetings with world leaders. The softer tone toward North Korea — once threatened with “fire and fury” — has been replaced by rosy optimism, with Trump reserving tough rhetoric for another potential nuclear aspirant and strategic foe: Iran. “It was a different world,” Trump said Monday of his one-time moniker for the North Korean leader. “That was a dangerous time. This is one year later, a much different time.” Trump began his second visit to the U.N. with a brief meeting on the global drug trade before meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who delivered a personal message to Trump from Kim after their inter-Korean talks last week in Pyongyang. “You are the only person who can solve this problem,” Moon said to Trump, relaying Kim’s words. Dwight Howard said long flights to China for promotional tours contributed to his back soreness.
THREE POINTERS
Comebacks in progress
Howard off to achy start with Wizards NBA Dwight Howard joked Monday at media day about the sore back that’s expected to keep him out for the start of training camp with the Wizards. Coach Scott Brooks downplayed the significance of the injury, too. Still, it’s not ideal that the team needs to put off incorporating its one offseason addition to the starting lineup. “I’ve been having to do a lot of traveling with shoe companies and stuff like that in China. So just from training, traveling — and airplanes weren’t made for tall people. … It kind of sucks to fly 15 hours curled up in the fetal position,” said Howard, a 6-foot-11 center entering his 15th NBA season. “So just a minor setback. It shouldn’t take that long for me to get back on the court,” he
added. “I’ve been feeling great all summer. Just something that we’ll have to deal with, and it shouldn’t keep me out too long.” The Wizards traded starting center Marcin Gortat to the Clippers and added Howard, who’ll turn 33 in December, on a twoyear, $11 million contract with a player option. He averaged 16.6 points and 12.5 rebounds last season for a Hornets team that missed the playoffs and now is with his fourth team in four years. That means adjusting yet again — to new teammates, to a new coach, to a new system. In Washington, everything revolves around the backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal. Last season, when Wall appeared in only 41 of 82 games, the Wizards went 43-39 and were eighth in the Eastern Conference, losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Raptors. Brooks, Beal and others said all the right things about Howard on Monday.

Learning by watching New Wizards center Dwight Howard said Monday at the team’s media day that he hasn’t yet gotten on the court with teammates John Wall and Bradley Beal, but he’s already learned their tendencies by watching film. “Where they like the ball. Where they like to get screened at. Just things that will really help them get to their sweet spots,” he said. (AP)
“He’s going to make my job a lot easier,” said Beal, who led Washington in scoring by averaging 22.6 points last season. “He’s going to make everybody’s job a lot easier on both ends of
the floor, because you still have to respect his ability at the rim. He averaged 16 and 13 last year. Those are great numbers, you know? In our system, those can increase, easily.” Now it’s just a matter of getting Howard, an eight-time AllStar, out on the floor. “We’re just going to be careful,” Brooks said, adding that he was “not sure” if Howard would practice when camp opens today at the team’s new facility in Southeast D.C. Brooks listed Howard’s status as “day-to-day,” saying he wasn’t overly concerned. “But we’re not going to rush him to get back,” the coach said.
The 7-foot-3 Knicks forward tore an ACL in February and said Monday he wants to stay patient in his recovery. He isn’t yet sprinting, and there’s no time pegged for his return.

Clemson taps Lawrence to replace Bryant at QB
Baker Mayfield on Monday was named the Browns’ new starting quarterback — the 30th since the franchise’s rebirth in 1999. The No. 1 overall pick will direct Cleveland’s offense Sunday at Oakland. As expected, coach Hue Jackson made the move to replace Tyrod Taylor with Mayfield after the rookie rallied the Browns to a 21-17 win Thursday night over the Jets — Cleveland’s first win since 2016. “I saw him make more plays with the guys, Jackson said. On national TV, Mayfield came in after Taylor suffered a concussion. In his pro debut, Mayfield was 17-of-23 for 201 yards in just more than one half. (AP)
Quarterback Josh Jackson suffered a broken left fibula in Virginia Tech’s loss to at Old Dominion on Saturday, and the injury requires surgery, coach Justin Fuente announced Monday. Fuente said the surgery was scheduled to take place today, but there is no timetable for how long Jackson will be sidelined. Jackson, in his second season as the starter, was injured in the third quarter of the Hokies’ 49-35 loss in Norfolk, Va. Redshirt junior Ryan Willis replaced him and was 9-for-18 for 131 yards with a touchdown pass. Jackson led the Hokies to wins at Florida State and against William & Mary this season. (AP)
Freshman Trevor Lawrence will start for No. 3 Clemson against Syracuse on Saturday, the Tigers announced Monday. Senior Kelly Bryant, who led Clemson to a 12-2 mark and the College Football Playoff last season, started the first four games this season with Lawrence coming off the bench early in each contest. Lawrence threw a career-best four TD passes in a 49-21 win at Georgia Tech on Saturday. Lawrence, who is 6-foot-6, has completed 39 of 60 passes for 600 yards, nine TDs and two interceptions. He got the Tigers (4-0) rolling Saturday after Bryant failed to lead scoring drives on the team’s first two series. (AP)

Bowey yearns for bigger role Young defenseman has uphill climb to win a job in Caps’ top-3 pairings NHL For his day with the Stanley Cup, Capitals defenseman Madison Bowey filled the bowl with his grandmother’s German borscht soup and proudly lapped it up with a spoon. Bowey will soon have his name engraved on the trophy. He counted as a member of the Cup-winning roster, and yet he was left wanting more.
“Definitely this time around, for another run, I’d like to be a bigger contributor,” Bowey said. Bowey was a healthy scratch for the entirety of the Capitals’ playoff run after appearing in 51 games during the regular season. Now back for his sophomore campaign with the team, the 23-year-old could find himself outside of the lineup to start the season because Washington returns its top six blue-liners. Low-carb diets may have risks
The reason for rest days GETTY IMAGES
‘No pain, no gain’ may sound tough, but pushing yourself too hard is a good way to get injured
EXERCISE While training for a half-marathon last fall, Janet Sherman, 57, started noticing pain in her right leg and left foot. A diagnosis of a quadriceps strain and plantar fasciitis led to shoe inserts and cross-training. Before long, the Wyoming-based teacher was “just good enough” to get back to training, and so she did, although she opted to drop down to a shorter 10K race distance. On race day, Sherman’s foot began bothering her early, and by a water stop two-thirds of the way through the course, she knew she should drop out. “It was so painful, but I was stubborn and finished out the race,” she says. “Afterward, I could barely walk.” Sherman recognizes that failing to quit the race probably led to a monthlong layoff from the sport she loves. “I regret that I couldn’t pull the plug psychologically,” she says. To the inactive, Sherman’s
attitude might be hard to understand. But for amateur athletes and weekend warriors, pushing through pain is a common refrain. “As a society, we are more active in sports than ever before,” says Adrienne Langelier, a Texas-based sports psychology consultant. “But at the same time, as a culture we have developed a ‘no days off’ mentality.” That needs to change, says Mark Cucuzzella, a physician and a professor at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. “ ‘No pain, no gain’ — no, thank you,” he quipped. “For too long, we have glamorized that way of thinking. It’s not sustainable.” Some who become immersed in a sport fear a loss of hardearned fitness if they take off even a day or two. “People worry that if they stop, they won’t start again,” Langelier said. But pressing too hard can lead to injury, illness and exhaustion. With running, for instance, pushing through pain can

lead to a secondary injury, says Adam Tenforde of the Spaulding National Running Center at Harvard Medical School. “A stress fracture, if you continue to run on it, may progress to a full fracture and require a much longer recovery period, for example,” he said. “I advocate for addressing pain early, rather

than ignoring it.” Langelier says that reframing rest as part of training can also be helpful: “Leave some time in there for taking care of yourself, and make it an integral part of your training.” Levitt is a big believer that athletes need to understand that stress is stress, no matter where it is coming from. “I see amateurs who want to train like pros, and they end up getting hurt,” he says. “They forget that pros have a schedule that allows for all the rest and recovery they need, without a job interfering.” Since experiencing her injury last year, Sherman has learned from her mistakes and pays s attention to niggling injuries s before it’s too late. “I’m an avid d d weightlifter, and I recently had ” a strain in my gluteus muscle,” she says. “I probably could have e kept training like I wanted, but I realize that the price might not be worth it.” AMANDA LOUDIN
New research suggests that replacing carbohydrates with animal fat and protein, as most low-carb diets do, is linked to a shorter life span. The study, published in Lancet Public Health, finds that based on carb intake alone, a 50-year-old participant who eats less than 30 percent carbs will live to be 79.1 years old, compared with 82 years for someone eating more than 65 percent carbs. To explore whether these results were due to carb intake or something else, the authors homed in on which kinds of foods people on lowcarb diets were replacing their carbs with. Those who consumed more animal-based protein and fat had a higher risk of early death than those who chose more plantbased protein and fat, suggesting it’s the types of foods we choose, rather than the amount of carbohydrates, that matters most. The bedbugs that never went away Q. Six months ago my apartment was finally cleared of bedbugs. It was a nightmare — our building had to be treated multiple times and it affected my sleep, my mood, my relationships. I feel like it changed me. I convince myself they’re back and panic all over again. I am hesitant to go to other people’s places because I worry I’ll get them again or I’ll give them to someone.
CAREERS BEGIN HERE.
I’m sorry. Despite most sufferers’ silence about this, the bedbug experience is startlingly common. Not just the critters (sorry, readers who may now not sleep themselves!), but also the nearly trauma-level aftermath of it all. But first, please recognize that you are not fundamentally changed by this. Instead, you are having some justifiable anxiety reactions to a trying, stressful event — one

that immensely affected your daily life and comfort. There is help. It may seem silly (or even more embarrassing) to consider seeing a therapist about this, but a good cognitive behavioral therapy practitioner can help you work through this stress reaction like any other: systematically, with new coping mechanisms, reframed thought patterns and relaxation exercises.
First, breathe. It’s OK to have a reaction to this — and beating yourself up about the reaction is not going to do any good. There’s no one-size-fits-all about who “should” be friends with whom on social media, but in a healthy marriage the right answer begins with respecting each other’s vulnerabilities and reactions, and communicating honestly. It sounds like this upsets you not because you’re worried about an affair per se, but more because it awakens basic feelings of jealousy. They did have something significant together that you weren’t a part of, and when you see them interacting now — even if it’s about a goofy cat video — it makes you feel left out all over again. So, start there. Feelings are never a bad thing when they can be talked through with someone who’s willing to try to understand.

Not everyone is a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical STAGE After the final performance of “Hamilton” at the Kennedy Center earlier this month, Jim Barnett and Faye Elkins stood on the terrace overlooking the Potomac River. The Bethesda couple had bought the tickets three days earlier, spending
$1,200 for the pair on StubHub. Asked whether Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical had lived up to their expectations, Elkins quickly said yes. But Barnett shifted his feet, turned his head, scrunched his face. He was preparing to disagree. That’s a difficult thing to do. “Hamilton” has won Tony Awards, Olivier Awards, a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize and the first Kennedy Center Honor given to a work of art and not a

person. Who are the poor souls who don’t actually like this thing? But there are detractors. Through Reddit came Romy Fischer, a paralegal living in Brooklyn, who felt unmoved by
the show but told hardly anyone. “My co-workers are all obsessed,” she said. “I just couldn’t bear to disappoint them.” Actress Casey Wilson expressed her distaste for the show

on her podcast. On HBO’s “The Shop,” comedian Jerrod Carmichael called it “terrible.” Several academics also have picked “Hamilton” apart. Lyra D. Monteiro, an assistant professor at Rutgers University-Newark, wrote that the show perpetuates “founders chic,” which venerates the historic figures while forgetting their slave-owning sins. After that last performance at the Kennedy Center, many attendees were over the moon just fine. Barnett, however, standing on the terrace next to his wife, wasn’t one of them. “I’ve seen a lot of plays where I’ve had that rush of emotion,” he said. “I didn’t have that.” ZACHARY PINCUS-ROTH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

entertainment The World War II novel takes on extra meaning in the current climate BOOK REVIEW The detention of thousands of people trying to enter the United States through its southern borders has drawn comparisons to the internment of Americans during World War II. “The War Outside,” Monica Hesse’s timely young adult novel out today, brings to life what it was like for Japanese and German families held in the Crystal City
Internment Camp in the 1940s. Hesse, who covers gender issues for The Washington Post, uses a wellresearched histori- ‘The War cal backdrop to tell Outside’ a powerful coming-of-age story about two interned teens. These emotionally fragile friends are Haruko Tanaka, the daughter of Japanese immigrants who were living in Colorado, and Margot Krukow, the daughter of German-born parents who were farmers in Iowa.

‘War Outside’ is tragically timely
Monica Hesse’s new novel focuses on a World War II internment camp.
The young women’s somewhat mystifying relationship is as tension-filled as any suspense tale. Haruko and Margot can’t
articulate to themselves or each other what their true connection might be. We watch their relationship grow, yet, like them, we don’t understand its essence. Both are dealing with family issues, and Hesse deftly intuits the challenges of being a teenager living behind barbed-wire fences. At one point, Haruko’s brother tells her: “Don’t let yourself think this is normal.” If your moral outrage meter wasn’t already maxed out by the recent spate of border arrests and family separations, it will be after this. Instead, Thu goes to contestant Truc Nhu and asks if Nhu will come with her. The two leave together. Later, however, Nhu changed her mind and returned to the show.

Twitter found it unrealistic that Kavanaugh kept his social calendars from when he was a teenager for more than 30 years.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) The line between work and play is likely to be obscured today, as you find new enjoyment in something that brings you considerable profit.
TODAY: Cloudy skies persist and some pockets of light rain and drizzle may linger in the morning. As skies attempt to brighten in the afternoon, temperatures — also assisted by light winds from the south — may eclipse 70. But the wedge of cool air near the ground may linger, so how much above 70 is an open question.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) It’s time to clean up your act a bit in order to be presentable when things get formal. First impressions do count. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Collaboration with another may prove more difficult than usual today, but you can overcome any serious differences in little time.

“Oh my God. I’ve been talking about aging since I was 30. Can we just be alive?”
“The Hills” star Audrina Patridge, 33, and singer Ryan Cabrera, 36, have broken up after five months of dating, Us Weekly reported Monday. The split marks an end to the couple’s second stint together after they previously dated from January to May 2010. “We’re just having fun,” Patridge told People in June. “Great things happen when it’s not forced, and things are naturally just happening. And that’s what it is. We just have the best time together.” Patridge was married to BMX rider Corey Bohan for 10 months before filing for divorce in September 2017. (EXPRESS)
