One Crisis Over, on to the Next Government avoids shutdown, previews big spending fights
Beij WdZ <ekdZ
MWi^_d]jed One crisis averted, on to the next. The day after Congress managed to avert a government shutdown — again — Republicans and Democrats stared ahead Tuesday at major fights over spending that underscore a deep divide that’s sure to define the fastapproaching national elections. On Monday night, lawmakers had postponed their dispute over whether billions for disaster aid must be paid for with cuts elsewhere in the budget, finessing a pact to keep the government operating. But tea party-driven Republicans are still insisting on significant spending cuts this fall, with some arguing that a hard-fought congressional agreement this summer to fund the government at $1.043 trillion in 2012 was too generous. Democrats, many of whom complained of too many concessions and reductions in this year’s showdowns, are furiously trying to

protect government programs. The next skirmish will be over how and where to spend the new year’s budget, with a Nov. 18 deadline for that legislation. But the next really big deal is the special 12-member bipartisan supercommittee and whether it can come up with a plan to slash $1.5 trillion over 10 years by Nov. 23 — the day before Thanksgiving.
“The heat will be on, the heat from the American people,” said former Republican senator Alan Simpson, R-Wyo., who believes Americans struggling economically will be asking, “Why stretch us out like this?” Shortly after Senate votes on Monday, Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., thanked party leaders “for helping the Democratic Party find
The Federal Emergency Management Agency this week has found about $40 million to refill disaster aid accounts and now expects the relief fund to stay solvent until at least Friday, the end of the budget year. the backbone it needed to fight and win this debate.” The disaster aid dispute that threatened to partially shut down the government was resolved relatively quickly. The fight, however, was an unpleasant reminder to most Americans of the last-minute maneuvering in April to avert a shutdown and the August showdown over raising the nation’s borrowing authority that left financial markets unnerved. GOP Trio Bank Millions Romney, Perry, Paul leave the other 2012 hopefuls in the dust MWi^_d]jed Only three Republican presidential candidates are worth any money — campaign money, that is. Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Ron Paul have banked millions. But the other GOP candidates are struggling or broke, putting their candidacies in question four months before the first nominating contests take place. Ahead of a critical fundraising deadline Friday, all of the contenders are furiously courting donors in a last-minute attempt to pick up cash before they file a three-month summary that will measure one aspect of the financial strength of their campaigns. The candidates’ own cash is just part of the picture because outside groups are now allowed to

candidates win the nomination. Romney’s campaign says he could raise as much as $18 million by Friday. Perry donors claim he could hit $10 million. And Paul’s campaign asked supporters to celebrate the Texas congressman’s Aug. 20 birthday with a donation — and they gave him $1.6 million on that day alone. The rest of the field lags far, far behind. Jon Huntsman recently had to write himself a half-million dollar check to keep his campaign afloat. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann spent so much money in Iowa in August to win a statewide test vote that her Web videos look more amateurish than professional now. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich is still mired in debt. Herman Cain has loaned himself hundreds of thousands of dollars so he can keep running. And Rick Santorum’s team acknowledges that he’s barely scraping by. (AP)

Health Care Costs Shift
More Americans are paying more out of pocket for coverage, a survey finds MWi^_d]jed
9Wi[ IjkZo
Premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance continued to escalate this year even as the share of workers getting less generous coverage reached a new high, according to survey data released Tuesday. In 2011, for the first time, half of workers at small companies with individual policies faced annual deductibles of $1,000 or more. In 2006, that figure was 16 percent. At large companies, the share has grown from 6 percent to 22 percent over the same five years.
Jerri Wood, 59, of Renton, Wash., a married mother of three, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2002.

At the same time, the survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that premiums for family plans rose 9 percent in 2011, after several years of slower annual growth. A similar recent survey by the consulting firm Mercer found that yearly premium increases have been hovering around the 6 percent mark and will grow by slightly less in 2012. Both sources point to the same fundamental long-term shift: Faced with continually climbing premiums, a record share of employers have moved to plans that require workers to pay more out of pocket. Employers seem to be turning to cost-shifting as an alternative to dropping coverage outright. During the first half of the decade, the share of companies offering

health insurance shrank from 68 percent to 60 percent, and the figure for very small companies dropped from 58 percent to 48 percent. But since about 2005 that decline has leveled off. Premiums paid by workers have galloped ahead of wage increases and inflation — rising 131 percent between 2001 and 2011. Employer costs have gone up 113 percent over the same period, as some have asked workers to take on a higher proportion of premium costs. Still, employers are primarily coping with rising health-care expenses by moving their workers into plans with higher out-ofpocket costs such as deductibles,
Initial charges: Wood and her husband were covered by a plan that paid nearly all the costs: Out of an $80,000 hospital bill, she estimates she paid $500. Changes in care: In 2005, the company began requiring them to contribute. For the Woods, that now adds up to about $180 month. The plan has also increased the Woods’ out-of-pocket costs. Co-pays were introduced for doctors and specialists ($30 per visit). Wood also pays a deductible for diagnostic procedures (now $150), and a 10 percent co-insurance charge and 20 percent for “out-of-networkâ€? aspects. Wood’s twice-annual MRIs cost her $1,000 apiece. co-pays and co-insurance. “If the benefits are too rich, the cost of them will be high and all employees will be paying more out of their paycheck,â€? said Beth Umland, Mercer’s director of research for health and benefits. Nonetheless, the burden on workers and their families is becoming widespread. Peter Cunningham, a researcher at the Center for Studying Health System Change, has found that about one in five families with employer-sponsored insurance was spending more than a tenth of its income on out-of-pocket health-care costs by 2008 (the most recent year for which statistics were available). ?i C[jhe FWii_d] Kf <Wh[i5 I contacted Metro last week about a bus driver who decided to bypass a bus stop. I received an email that same day about them looking into it, but since then I have heard nothing. That wasn’t the first time I’ve seen a driver pass up a stop. You would think that they’d be more concerned about bringing in revenue. People not getting on the bus are people not giving money. I’d contact them again. Drivers do sometimes bypass stops if the buses are full, or the supervisors are trying to spread out the buses because another one is very nearby. But this shouldn’t be a regular thing.
Is this some sort of strange experiment to see how much you can make a masstransit system unusable and unfriendly before riders just give up? Almost everyone I know has pretty much given up using Metro at any time other than rush hour. I understand the need to do track maintenance, but the constant single-tracking on top of already large headway times makes using Metrorail on a weekend a complete waste. It’s discouraging. And you can’t use the otherwise helpful Trip Planner on Metro’s website, because it doesn’t account for single-tracking delays.
:h$ =h_ZbeYa offers commuter counseling online at washingtonpost.com.
I am frustrated by the frequency with which I am required to purchase a new SmartTrip card. Every now and then my card will just stop working. Sometimes it will magically start working again a few days later; sometimes it is dead for good. I’d sure like WMATA to figure out a technology that doesn’t fail so easily. Agreed. Metro is trying to figure out a replacement for the SmarTrip cards, but that’s primarily because the company that makes them is getting out of the business. SmarTrip cards don’t get demagnetized, as paper fare cards do. They can break, though. Or there may be a problem with the fare gate software.
I’ve always wondered why a Metro line was not run down the middle of 395 instead of HOV lanes. With the opening of the BRAC building at Seminary Road and the horrendous traffic it will bring, it seems that a Metro line there is an even better idea now. The line could start at the Pentagon, have stops at Shirlington, Seminary Road and Duke Street, and end at Springfield. While I’d love to see the region add more transit, there’s no active proposal to expand Metrorail except for the construction of the Dulles line, which still doesn’t have the financing in place for the phase that actually gets trains out to the airport. For the I-395 corridor, we could certainly use more transit, but I think you might have better luck pushing this as a cheaper light-rail idea.
Excuse the rant: I switch trains from the Orange Line to the Green/Yellow Line every day. Going up to the platform where I catch the Green/Yellow Line, I can’t wait for the next train because I can’t get through the THRONG that takes up the entire platform to get to the trains!!! Please, people, watch where you are going, and let people cross so they are not late for their next train and work! The transfer station platforms are really crowded, and not just at rush hours. The Nationals have played their final home game of 2011, so that should ease congestion on the Gree Line a little bit. (Of course, now we have hockey and basketball to crowd Gallery Place.) Those areas boarded off for work zones don’t help either.

Gay Couple Data Revised Census: Aug. report inflated number of relationships in area MWi^_d]jed Figures released by the Census Bureau on Tuesday corrected an August report that inflated the number of same-sex couples in the D.C. region. Errors in the way the census recorded information in the “name and “sex fields are to blame for the inflated original count, census officials said Tuesday. The August report was 6.3 percent higher than the revised data. Still, same-sex couples are reporting their status more openly than before. Gary Gates, a demographer with the Williams Institute, a UCLA think tank that specializes
in gay legal and policy issues, told The Washington Post in August, “The bulk of the change is people acknowledging it. Indicating your relationship on a census form is one way of suggesting people are more open about it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re terribly out in their community. Revised data for the District now show 4,822 same-sex couples (5,146 couples were reported in August), a 42.5 percent increase from numbers recorded in 2000. Of this number, 745 couples say they are spouses. In Virginia, 4,243 same-sex couples, a 75 percent increase from 2000 numbers. Of this number, 2,474 say they are spouses. In Maryland, 12,538 same-sex couples, a 78 percent rise from 2000 numbers. Of this number, 2,321 say they are spouses.

The amount by which the number of D.C.-area people who identified themselves as being part of a gay couple was inflated in an August census report.
EOE
Earlier data showed that samesex couples with children were more likely to live in Washington’s surrounding counties and suburbs rather than in the city itself. “We live where we can afford, where it’s reasonable to work, where there are good schools if you have children and where it’s close to shopping amenities. All the things our parents looked for, Cary Jagur, president of the Alexandria Gay and Lesbian Community Association, said in August. K ATIE ROGERS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

climbed through a hatch that hadn’t been opened in 11 years. The engineers are among a relatively small group in their profession certified to hoist themselves up and down the sides of buildings. For several hours, engineer Dave Megerle was perched atop the 555foot monument, setting up a rope system and other equipment that will allow the rappelling team to traverse the exterior of the monument looking for cracks, chips and other damage. Dallas QB Tony Romo said the Redskins were simulating his snap count — an issue he says the Cowboys will address with the league — which he says led to a series of bad snaps from center Phil Costa on Monday night. Simulating a snap count is against NFL rules, a personal foul that can cost a team 15 yards. According to ESPN, the Cowboys complained during game, but to no avail. (T WP)
Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman is sacked by the Cowboys’ DeMarcus Ware during Dallas’ 18-16 win over Washington on Monday. The Redskins fell to 2-1 with the loss.

instead of the player who lost Dez Bryant on a third-and-21 play and then grabbed Bryant’s face mask to put the Dallas Cowboys in fieldgoal range. Today, the coordinators are at fault. Kyle Shanahan should have called more running plays with the lead. Jim Haslett should have swallowed his stubborn pride and not gambled by siccing all but three of his players on an ailing Tony Romo, who found Bryant amid a near-vacant secondary. Today is also the day to let go and move on. Between the buildup and the letdown, take Monday’s game for what it was: a crushing late-game loss but, possibly, an aberration. This week will reveal more about Mike Shanahan’s team than
>Wbb Ifekji E\\ Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall slammed defensive coordinator Jim Haslett for blitzing eight players and leaving no insurance coverage downfield on third-and-21 with 2:20 left in Monday’s game and Washington up 16-15. On the key play, Cowboys QB Tony Romo completed a 30-yard pass to Dez Bryant, who had beaten Hall. Hall was flagged for a face mask penalty, tacking on an additional 15 yards. Hall said the Redskins went to the allout blitz one time too many. “Sooner or later, somebody’s going to figure it out,” Hall said. “You don’t have to be a ... rocket scientist to figure it out after a while.” Hall also said the penalty was a bad call. anything that happened Monday night on national television. This week will either show genuine progression in the Shanahan era or will expose the coach’s aspirations as more fantasy than reality. Short week, playing against a winless team, in a stadium where the Redskins were soundly beaten a year ago. “We definitely got to win this game, go [to] 3-1 going into the bye week — for team morale and also for the city,” said veteran Lorenzo Alexander, a standout on special teams. “You drop this game, you know, people start reminiscing about last year and, ‘Oh, OK, this team isn’t as good as we thought.’ If they melt down against the Rams in a regionally televised game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, then London Fletcher’s declarations of a “special team” fall flat. The good vibes of the last few months felt by the tired, poor, huddled masses in their ketchup-andmustard rain ponchos start to dissolve into another depressing spiral of a season. The Redskins need to beat the Rams in St. Louis for one simple reason: because if they don’t just four games in, this year will begin to look like every other year around here. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

A Season of Hope in Washington Nats close out a year in which they made significant progress In the days before Wednesday’s season finale, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo was asked what the team needed to do most in the off-season. The list was short. “I think we’re an outfield bat away and a starting pitcher away from really being a contender in the division,” Rizzo said. Then a funny thing happened: No one laughed. In previous years, under previous management, such statements were not uncommon. But a deeper look usually revealed a franchise in need of much, much more. In years to come, the 2011 season may well be remembered as the time when hope arrived, real hope, for the first time since base-

ball returned to Washington. Sure, there were disappointments. First baseman Adam LaRoche hit only .172 in 43 games before he was lost for the season with a shoulder injury. Jayson Werth had
his worst season statistically since 2005 after signing a $126 million free-agent contract. And manager Jim Riggleman quit in the middle of a stretch in which the team won 11 of 12 games.
Despite all that, the Nationals entered the season’s final series with a possibility of finishing above .500 for the first time. They clinched third place in the NL east on Monday. In the home finale on Sunday, 37,638 fans packed Nationals Park, a rarity for a game that did not include Stephen Strasburg or the Philadelphia Phillies. The fans came because, despite his struggles, Werth’s intensity changed the team’s attitude. Because Michael Morse became one of the league’s most dangerous hitters. Because Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa play the game the way it was meant to be played. Because Jordan Zimmermann truly arrived. And because Strasburg is back. “We’re showing teams we could turn this division around soon,” Morse said Monday night after his 30th home run of the season. “We want to win a World Series. To win a World Series, you have to win a division.” DEREK TURNER

Iec[ I[Yh[j0 Ozzie Guillen’s website apparently leaked the news he has agreed to become manager of the Marlins. A post Monday night quoted Guillen announcing he was Florida-bound. The blog post was taken down a short time later and replaced by a post that discussed Guillen’s departure from the Chicago White Sox while making no mention of the Marlins. But on Tuesday afternoon, Guillen tweeted: “Weird to be in miami in this time but very happy ready to go.” (AP)

Redskins Play Down To Expectations To borrow a line from Dennis Green, the Redskins are just who we thought they were. In other words, they are not a very good team. It doesn’t take a bombastic former NFL coach to make that assessment. They don’t have the talent to overcome more than a few mistakes. And the fact that Washington is 2-1 — and could easily have been 3-0 — is a testament to coach Mike 8o CWjj Shanahan. Im[died The turnover battle is make-or-break for any team; just ask the Patriots after Tom Brady’s four-interception day Sunday against the Bills. With Rex Grossman at quarterback, turnovers are always going to be dicey for the Redskins.
J^Wj MWi^_d]jed _i (#' Æ WdZ YekbZ [Wi_bo ^Wl[ X[[d )#& Æ _i W j[ijWc[dj je C_a[ I^WdW^Wd$ But what separates Shanahan’s squad from some of the elite teams in the NFL is how costly penalties can be. Remarkably, the Redskins had drawn only two penalties with about four minutes to go in their 18-16 loss in Dallas. That’s good coaching. Then, three penalties — including DeAngelo Hall’s face mask after Dez Bryant’s 30-yard catch — in the final minutes played a key role in the defeat. Did anyone really think Grossman would lead a last-second rally? To be fair, the quarterback made some good throws; he also made some awful ones. We knew Grossman would make his share of mistakes. It’s up to the rest of the team to limit theirs if this is going to be a surprisingly successful season. To reach Matt Swenson, e-mail matt.swenson@readexpress.com

Dreams Come True Jennifer Hudson opens a weight-loss center in her native Chicago )'
In her recent column for V Magazine, Lady Gaga blasted the New York Times’ Cathy Horyn, above, the veteran fashion writer who honed her rhetoric at The Washington Post in the ’90s. Gaga, whining like a kid, accused Horyn of “Extreme Critic Fundamentalism,” aka “negative” journalism practiced by, you know, serious critics. Gaga asked, “Why have we decided that one person’s opinion matters more than anyone else’s?” To me, 8o AWj^[h_d[ that’s obvious: Critics 8eob[ know more than us. W Magazine just profiled big critics such as Horyn, Hilary Alexander of Britain’s Telegraph and Robin Givhan, who recently left The Post to join Newsweek. These women know fashion like diplomats know languages. They’re fluent in couture, cuts and history. They sense whether a secretary of state’s high-heeled boots will become iconic. (Givhan’s 2005 story on Condoleezza Rice’s “commanding clothes” effectively won her a Pulitzer.) It’s Paris Fashion Week, and the sartorial sages are scribbling in the front rows, even if celebs ask, “Who cares?” I care; it affects what I’ll wear later. Store buyers care. And D.C. women care, unless they want Gaga picking out their spring wardrobes. Read Katherine’s previous columns at: expressnightout.com/speaker

Cki_Y It’s been 20 years since the release of Nirvana’s “Nevermind.” The album, which included the cultural anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” marked the beginning of the alt-rock movement of the 1990s and transformed drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and singer Kurt Cobain into the poster boys of Generation X, until Cobain’s suicide in 1994. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of “Nevermind,” which has sold more than 30 million copies, Universal is re-issuing the remastered album (out this week) with obscure B-sides, alternate mixes and live recordings. On a recent afternoon inside 606 Studio, Grohl and Novoselic, while slumped on a couch near the same soundboard that they used to record “Nevermind,” reminisced with producer Butch Vig about how they made the album that forever changed their lives.
— DAV E GROHL , NIRVANA’S DRUMMER, (PICTURED, WITH BASSIST KRIST NOVOSELIC, LEFT, AND PRODUCER BUTCH VIG, RIGHT ), ON HOW “NEVERMIND” CHANGED HIS LIFE.
Were he still alive, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain would have turned 44 this year.
How has music changed since “Nevermind” was released? VIG: When “Nevermind” happened,
it was still a slower time. That record took off from a grass-roots level. The label printed something like 40,000 copies. Word of mouth was faster than the Geffen publicity machine could handle. How do you feel about the impact of “Nevermind” on culture? NOVOSELIC: I remember at the time,
when Nirvana was just breaking, we were still very idealistic about it. We thought, “Yeah, we’re gonna change the world!” It’s like when I first heard punk rock music, it spoke to me, but then again, revolutions get co-opted, and it never really turns out the way you think it would turn out.
When did you realize “Nevermind” had become bigger than you? GROHL: I’d say “Saturday Night
Do you think you could have made “Nevermind” today? GROHL: Who knows? I know that if
Live.” ... In the dressing room, that’s when [expletive] “Weird Al” Yankovic calls and asks if he can do a parody of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” That was a weird weekend.
Krist and I went in that booth right now and recorded on that board, we could sound exactly the same. That’s how simple the whole thing was. DERRIK J. L ANG (AP)

Ceauşescu? We Hardly Know You!
Voice Double Every artist has influences. But Ian Felice (shown, far right) of the Felice Brothers sounds so much like Bob Dylan you might find yourself checking behind the curtains to see whether the godfather of folk is actually the one singing. On the one hand, they should stop trying to copy Bob Dylan. On the other, if they can write anything approximating his music, well, shouldn’t they? Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW; 8 p.m., $18; 202-667-7960, Blackcatdc.com. (U St.-Cardozo)
Smoke and Mirrors
Shortly after the December 1989 fall of the Ceaușescu regime in Romania, British playwright Caryl Churchill, a director and a bunch of theater students went to Romania to write a play about the revolution. The result was “Mad Forest,” a three-act opus concentrating on two families. Forum Theatre at Round House, 8641 Colesville Road, Silver Spring; through Oct. 15; $15-$25; 240-644-1390, Forum-theatre.org. (Silver Spring)
like in football, you score more with a great tight end.
“Mad Men” won’t be back for months. While a few shows (“Pan Am” and “The Playboy Club”) are trying to sate America’s thirst for ’60s glamour, we should all stop relying on television to make us feel roguish and dissolute. At Panache’s Cigars and Scotch Night this evening, each participant gets snacks, three varieties of Chivas Regal, a Perdomo cigar and the atmosphere of a bygone era. Panache Tysons, 1753 Pinnacle Drive, McLean, Va.; Thu., 6:30 p.m., $55; 703-748-1919.

There’s nothing particularly dramatic about his debut — it’s simply a better version of albums that get made all the time. one I’m-famous-now-and-you’restill-not track, and “Cole World” has two, both of them pretty great. Jay-Z guests on, but does not own, the slinky dub-’n’-bass-fest “Mr. Nice Watch,” on which Cole, who raps “like it’s Christmas Eve,” scoffs at those who would tweet negatively about him (talk about a First-World problem). On “Nobody’s Perfect,” Cole, assisted by a crooning Missy Elliott, discusses partying with Hova and explains his decision to pursue only girls who look like Rihanna (“I’m talking tens and better”), all made possible by his career, which is “heating up like that leftover lasagna.” It almost doesn’t sound like a boast. Do Not Try This at Home Author Karl Shaw’s new book could be called magnetic. It pulls you in, the way a magnet pulls a paper clip, and it doesn’t want to let you go. So don’t start “10 Ways to Recycle a Corpse” at bedtime. You may lose a lot of sleep. The book’s subtitle warns that it includes “100 More Dreadfully Distasteful Lists” (including Julius Caesar’s and Cleopatra’s attempts to cure baldness). One chapter justifies the book’s title, suggesting profitable and mostly legal ways to dispose of dead bodies. (AP)

I[h_[i Fh[c_[h[i Just once it’d be nice to see .0)& a comedy about urbanites moving to the suburbs that doesn’t rely on a mocking and simplistically Stepford view of such places. Setting that gripe aside, “Suburgatory,” which premieres tonight, displays a polished sense of humor and a better cast than it deserves, which makes it worth a look. Jane Levy stars as Tessa, whose single father, George (Jeremy Sisto of “Law & Order” and “Six Feet Under”), decides to move them from Manhattan to this idealistic “out there” — Westchester County? JkhXkb[dY[ 7^[WZ The longer you wait to purchase airfare for holiday travels, the pricier it might be 7Zl_Y[ Flying over the holidays is going to cost more this year. And the longer you wait to book, the pricier it’s likely to get. The average domestic airfare for the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas is $383, 4 percent higher than last year, according to Expedia. As airlines f ly fewer routes and planes to cut costs, there are fewer seats available. Flights are fuller than ever, and airlines can charge more. Airlines have an additional reason to charge families more during the holiday season: There are fewer high-paying business travelers, and airlines need to make up for that loss of revenue. A simple but valuable strategy: If you find a good fare, jump on it. The price might drop later on, but not much. Here are other tips to help you save.
8[ <b[n_Xb[ Adding a couple days to your trip before or after peak travel days can lower fares significantly. So can flying on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or early on the morning of New Year’s Day. These days tend to be less busy.

Best known for his patty-centric documentary, “Hamburger America,” George Motz explores how iconic American foods such as Krispy Kremes and Jelly Bellies are concocted in the Travel Channel’s “Made in America.”
<ehai _d j^[ HeWZ Burger aficionado George Motz explores how iconic products are ‘Made in America’ <eeZ JL Burger-philes trust George Motz’s tips on where to find primo patties in all 50 states. Now, the filmmaker behind 2005’s documentary “Hamburger America” and the travel guide of the same name ($20, Running Press) brings his appetite to the Travel Channel with “Made in America” (starts Oct. 4, 8 p.m.). The series trails Motz to 39 U.S. factories — including Krispy Kreme’s Greensboro, N.C., flagship and the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Tennessee. K ATIE ABERBACH (E XPRESS)
How did you choose the companies featured in “Made in America”?
We were trying to find stuff that was iconic, fun to make and fun to see on camera. We were also going for a very diverse pool of companies. We included everything from Jelly Belly jelly beans to GE aircraft! Is there any characteristic these products have in common, aside from just being made in the U.S.?
Some of them actually can’t be made anywhere else but in America. That’s a weird common denominator. For example, Tabasco: A lot of flavor comes from the peppers the company grows, but also from the Avery Island, La., salt they use to age the peppers. Jack Daniel’s is all about the water. The Jack
Daniel’s distillery [in Lynchburg, Tenn.] actually sits right on top of an aquifer that has some qualities that make great whiskey. If they lost the water, they’d lose the flavor of the whiskey. Why does it matter if a product is made in America?
Well, to me, there’s a sense that all these jobs are going overseas, which is true. But it’s important to know that a lot of your products are also being made by the country that you support. There’s a lot of pride that you experience when you know that a product is made in America. What surprised you about the food companies you looked at?
I learned that Tabasco is aged for

three years in whiskey barrels; that was amazing. The Jelly Belly factory is the loudest place. It’s got all these hard candies spinning around in all these sugar drums — you’ve got 50 in a room. It’s earshattering. And Ghirardelli Chocolates! You’d think those are made overseas because of the name, but they’ve been made in America [in San Francisco] for over 150 years. It’s one of the oldest chocolate makers in the country, and also the only chocolate company in America that sources its own beans. Did you want to feature any burger-related companies?

No, because we’re actually working on a whole separate, hamburgerbased show for the Travel Channel. It’s in production as we speak. So, why are burgers so popular lately?
It’s the economy. It’s cheap and easy to open a hamburger joint, cheaper than other types of restaurants. Everyone’s riding the coattails of the successful hamburger joint next door. It’s the same as the boom that happened to the Internet 10 years ago. It was the Internet boom then, hamburger boom now.

That Three Boys Love A Scent Is Usually Considered a BAD Sign

David Beckham says his sons — Brooklyn, 12; Romeo, 8; and Cruz, 6 — have signed off on his next men’s scent. “Any time I get a fragrance, I give all of my sons a tester,” he tells Us Weekly. “Kids are so honest, so they say they love it or they hate it. As soon as they smelled this one, they were, like, ‘We love it!’” (EXPRESS)

Northern Ireland farmer Alan Graham says he doesn’t know who Rihanna is, but she must keep her shirt on while on his land. Rihanna was shooting a video Monday in Graham’s wheat field. When she removed her top, Graham protested. “The state of undress was becoming inappropriate,” he says. “I had a conversation with Rihanna. I hope she understands where I’m coming from. We shook hands.” (AP)

We hope the worst won’t happen. But sometimes it does.
A message from DIRK KEMPTHORNE, President & CEO American Council of Life Insurers
It’s a fact of life. Tragedy can strike anyone, any time. Life insurance won’t make the emotional impact easier if Mom or Dad dies unexpectedly, but it can make the financial impact easier. It enables the family to pay bills, remain in their home, buy school supplies and make sure college expenses are covered. Yet life insurance can do even more. It can build savings as part of the financial protection it provides. Those savings can help families through difficult times or fund a comfortable and dignified retirement. Life insurance, along with annuity products, account for 1 in 5 of Americans’ long-term savings dollars. That’s why life insurance is so unique. The protection and savings it provides give families the peace of mind they need today and tomorrow.
Life insurance is critical to financial security, providing families protection and peace of mind.
